The Problems Facing Men | The War on Men Conference | Dr. Owen Strachan | Compass Bible Church — Transcript

- 0:00What a thrill to be with you, men. Uh
- 0:02this is the launch event for my book,
- 0:04The War on Men, which came out just this
- 0:06week. And uh I didn't know any of this
- 0:08was going to transpire. Just so you
- 0:10know, I'm not one of those speakers who
- 0:12says, "I'm going to need
- 0:1415 20-ft tall uh letters behind me with
- 0:17a Roman Gothic pillar wrap on either
- 0:20side in order for me to be able to do my
- 0:22messages." I have no such stipulations
- 0:24when I go speaking somewhere, but um
- 0:26this is just epic. And I'm so thankful
- 0:29to Pastor Mike. I love your pastor. Love
- 0:31Pastor Mike. Love Pastor Kellen, Pastor
- 0:33Lucas, Mark, the team. You have an
- 0:35excellent team of godly men. Absolutely.
- 0:38Amen.
- 0:39[applause]
- 0:43And where you have a strong pastoral
- 0:45team like that of strong men, by the
- 0:48grace of God, you are set up for
- 0:50flourishing as a church. And where you
- 0:53don't have those kind of men in the
- 0:54pulpit and in leadership,
- 0:56buckle up, cuz it's going to get stormy.
- 0:59God is so kind to give us men who love
- 1:02the Lord and are dogged and tenacious
- 1:05about the glory of God. And so I'm
- 1:07thankful that these men are at this
- 1:09church. None of us is a perfect man. We
- 1:11all have our sin to battle and kill
- 1:13every single day. We're all on level
- 1:15ground together. But uh what a blessing
- 1:18to be at a church like this.
- 1:21We're going to talk tonight first about
- 1:23the struggles of men. So, I want to be
- 1:27honest with you about where we are as a
- 1:29culture. And I want to frame this in a
- 1:31way that will not just say we have a few
- 1:34challenges today as men. I want us to
- 1:36understand in particular with the rising
- 1:38generation of boys and young men that
- 1:41the stakes are very high with where we
- 1:43are today.
- 1:45Masculinity
- 1:47is
- 1:49toxic.
- 1:51Just three words long, that brutal
- 1:53little sentence captures the spirit of
- 1:56our age. Traditional manhood and strong
- 1:59manhood are seen as problematic, even
- 2:01deeply problematic, today. According to
- 2:04the American Psychological Association
- 2:07in a widespread report in 2019,
- 2:10assertiveness, aggressiveness,
- 2:13risk-taking, compartmentalizing to focus
- 2:16on tasks, enduring hardship without
- 2:18emoting, being stoic, enjoying conflict
- 2:22or war, manhood in general, all that is
- 2:25seen now as bad. All that is seen as
- 2:30toxic. That is the phrase that you have
- 2:33heard attached in some form to what I
- 2:36just mapped out in terms of strong or
- 2:38assertive manhood. Who has heard some
- 2:41variation of the phrase "toxic
- 2:43masculinity"? Raise your hand tonight.
- 2:46This is the phrase, I believe, that more
- 2:49than any other is affecting in
- 2:51particular our boys and our young men.
- 2:55And I think it is accomplishing nothing
- 2:57less than a crisis in our age.
- 3:02In the most succinct form, when you fall
- 3:05prey to toxic masculinity, you now are
- 3:08participating in forces of oppression
- 3:11and patriarchy and evil in our society.
- 3:15When you are a strong man, when you want
- 3:18to take risks, when you are aggressive,
- 3:21when you are assertive, when there is a
- 3:23situation that requires somebody to act,
- 3:26even to act courageously, and you step
- 3:29forward into that situation, that
- 3:31instinct on your part that is wired into
- 3:34you as a man by God, that is now seen as
- 3:38toxic. When you step up to explain
- 3:41something, to try to help people, when
- 3:43you teach people, or when you lead in
- 3:45public in the forms that we were just
- 3:46talking about, even with pastoral
- 3:48leadership, there's now a term for that
- 3:50as well. It's called mansplaining. And
- 3:53so that's now seen as something worth
- 3:56ridicule that is not worthy of being
- 3:59practiced in our culture.
- 4:01The only way forward for men like you
- 4:06is to be cured
- 4:08of your toxicity.
- 4:10And in order to do so, you need to
- 4:12embrace the therapeutic matrix. You need
- 4:16to enter this dystopian place you will
- 4:18never truly leave. Welcome to America in
- 4:232023,
- 4:24where we live under an empire of lies,
- 4:28including the lie that manhood is toxic.
- 4:33In this matrix,
- 4:36you will not find any gospel.
- 4:38You will not find any redemption.
- 4:41You will not find forgiveness.
- 4:43You will not find Jesus Christ.
- 4:47You will only, as a man, own your
- 4:49privilege and renounce your power. But
- 4:52not just this, you will renounce any
- 4:54notion of manhood at all. The new
- 4:58paganism that is around us does not
- 5:00tolerate any hard and fast notion of the
- 5:03sexes. It's like that documentary that
- 5:06went out just a year or so ago, What is
- 5:09a Woman? The same documentary could go
- 5:11out, What is a Man? And just as few
- 5:14answers would be given to it. Everyone
- 5:17must now live in unreality
- 5:20by official edict. In this unreality,
- 5:25there is no creator. There's only the
- 5:27divinized human person. We're godlike
- 5:30now. We're godlike beings. Think about
- 5:33identity and how it's talked about in
- 5:35our culture. You choose your own
- 5:38identity. Our children are now trained
- 5:41that they should look inside themselves,
- 5:44find what desires and passions are
- 5:46strong, and there find their identity.
- 5:49You essentially as a human person choose
- 5:52who you want to be. If you have the body
- 5:54of a man, you may well not be a man. You
- 5:58may be a woman trapped in a man's body,
- 6:02or vice versa, and thus you need to
- 6:04undertake gender transition surgery and
- 6:08other methods to own your true identity.
- 6:14In these and other ways, we see that
- 6:16Christianity is not going to be affirmed
- 6:19in this age. The Christian worldview and
- 6:21biblical manhood does not get the gold
- 6:23star today. It gets you put in the
- 6:25cultural penalty box. Affirmation is
- 6:28given to those who affirm the pagan
- 6:31LGBTQIA2+
- 6:34worldview. That is the dominant
- 6:36worldview of our time in terms of those
- 6:38who make and form and police our
- 6:41culture, and many of you men know this.
- 6:45You're experiencing this. You're feeling
- 6:47this right now. You're in corporations.
- 6:50You're in workplaces. You're in jobs
- 6:53where the HR department or whoever it is
- 6:57that is handing down edicts from on high
- 7:00has already made very clear that your
- 7:02worldview is not the dominant worldview
- 7:05in this place. No, you're supposed to be
- 7:07affirming that worldview. You're
- 7:10supposed to be syncing up with the LGBTQ
- 7:13and so on worldview. That's the one that
- 7:16requires you potentially to march in
- 7:20pride or at least honor pride. That's
- 7:22the one where you are supposed to share
- 7:24your pronouns on the Zoom call for your
- 7:27company. This is the one that has your
- 7:29kids in a classroom where there's a
- 7:32pride flag or a BLM flag on the wall.
- 7:35This is
- 7:37the context and the culture we are in
- 7:40today. All of this is intersectional
- 7:43justice. You see Christianity had its
- 7:46day in the west, but now that day is
- 7:48over. And now we are in the age
- 7:52when the sexual revolution is ascendant
- 7:55and Christian sexuality has been
- 7:58demoted.
- 8:00It is time for men
- 8:03to lose.
- 8:05It is time for boys
- 8:08to lose.
- 8:09This losing will not be theoretical now
- 8:12and in days to come.
- 8:14You
- 8:15as a man
- 8:17will lose. You, if you persist in your
- 8:20toxic masculinity,
- 8:22you will pay the price.
- 8:25Everything you have loved and treasured
- 8:27will be taken from you. You will unlearn
- 8:30traditional manhood. You will break with
- 8:33religious doctrine taught in a church
- 8:36like this, a strong, Bible-believing
- 8:38church like this, that dares to tell men
- 8:42to act like men or man up. You will
- 8:44embrace your feminine side. You will
- 8:46stop seeking to be strong. You will
- 8:49embrace being soft. You will step back
- 8:52so strong women can lean in. You will
- 8:55learn to love androgyny, blur your
- 8:57gender, queer your sex, and live not
- 9:00according to God's design, but according
- 9:02to pagan lies. As you unlearn your
- 9:04toxicity, your entire way of thinking
- 9:07and living will change. You will shift
- 9:09from a traditional outlook with an
- 9:11emphasis on chivalry and self-denial and
- 9:14courage into a thoroughly postmodern
- 9:17one. You will not protect women.
- 9:20You will not try to stop physically
- 9:22robust adult men from entering restrooms
- 9:24where unprotected little girls are
- 9:26changing their clothes.
- 9:28You will not stand against body-ravaging
- 9:30surgeries that facilitate the
- 9:32aforementioned gender transition. In
- 9:35fact, you won't even know about that if
- 9:37it's happening to your child.
- 9:39That decision will be made between your
- 9:40child, if they're in a certain
- 9:42educational setting, and that child's
- 9:44teacher. And And you'll get the notice.
- 9:47You'll get the bill for the surgery on
- 9:48Monday.
- 9:49You will not raise your son or daughter
- 9:51in any sex-specific way. You will not
- 9:54speak or think as if there is anything
- 9:56traditionally identified as manly or
- 10:00womanly at all. You will defame all such
- 10:03thinking and repent of all such
- 10:05practices.
- 10:07You will be rewired,
- 10:09reprogrammed,
- 10:11and rendered something decidedly less
- 10:15than a man.
- 10:16Welcome to the war on truth.
- 10:19Welcome to the war on scripture.
- 10:22Welcome to the war on the sexes.
- 10:24And yes,
- 10:26welcome to the war on men.
- 10:29This is 2023.
- 10:32This is where we are.
- 10:34How are men doing today in such a
- 10:36climate? Are men thriving?
- 10:39Are men flourishing?
- 10:41Is this a good thing? Should we be
- 10:43cheering
- 10:44against men today because men for
- 10:47centuries and millennia in the West led
- 10:49things and now men have been demoted,
- 10:52and so this is a great glorious cultural
- 10:54victory? Is that what we're supposed to
- 10:56respond to all of this by? Men,
- 11:00in a single word,
- 11:02are
- 11:04struggling.
- 11:05Men, in a second
- 11:08major word, are in
- 11:11crisis.
- 11:12We are in a manhood crisis
- 11:17now.
- 11:18It's already upon us. People think men
- 11:21are having some challenges today. People
- 11:24talk about struggles and some bad
- 11:26economic indicators with men. No. No.
- 11:29No. No. No. No. That's way too weak. Men
- 11:31are in crisis, and not men on graphs and
- 11:35charts, real flesh and blood men
- 11:39and brothers.
- 11:42We should care about men.
- 11:44We should care tremendously about men.
- 11:48If men do badly,
- 11:50it is not as if you can vacuum seal off
- 11:53women and children, can you?
- 11:55If men do badly,
- 11:57women and children will do badly as
- 11:59well. This is not a zero-sum competition
- 12:04between men and women. And now it's
- 12:06men's time to lose and bring out the
- 12:09pom-poms and cheer. No, if men are doing
- 12:13badly,
- 12:14women and children are going to be
- 12:16directly affected. How are men doing?
- 12:19Six key areas today that show that men
- 12:24are struggling.
- 12:26First, men are struggling economically.
- 12:30In terms of work, if men in broad form
- 12:35are not working, men are not doing well.
- 12:39In Genesis 2:15, the Lord God, Yahweh,
- 12:43says to Adam
- 12:44that he is to work and protect or keep
- 12:49the garden.
- 12:50This is part of the original wiring of
- 12:52the man, that he's made to work. Men on
- 12:55average have 50 to 60% more upper body
- 12:59strength than women. Men on average have
- 13:012,000 to 3,000% more testosterone than
- 13:04women, boys than girls. This is why when
- 13:07you get home from work at the end of a
- 13:08long day, your girls come and give you
- 13:12nice, soft, delicate hugs, and your son,
- 13:17like a little bull, lifts up his foot at
- 13:19the end of the hallway, paces himself,
- 13:22rocks a little bit forward and backward,
- 13:24and then slams down the hallway and
- 13:26gives you the strongest tackle he can
- 13:28give you for no good reason at all. It's
- 13:30why at recess, why the little girls want
- 13:33to go out and talk to each other and
- 13:34figure out social dynamics in the third
- 13:36grade classroom, and the boys want to go
- 13:39to a basketball court or a football
- 13:41field or a baseball field and hit each
- 13:43other under the rules of a game that
- 13:45allows them to do so with no
- 13:47repercussions. It's because of the
- 13:50innate wiring of a boy. It's not that
- 13:52every boy likes sports, but it is that
- 13:54men are made to work. Men are made for
- 13:57action. If men then are not working, men
- 14:01are not doing well. The number of men
- 14:05working in prime working years today, in
- 14:082023,
- 14:10is at the same rate it was in the Great
- 14:13Depression 90 years ago. In 1960,
- 14:1993% of men aged 25 to 34 were in the
- 14:23labor force. 93 out of 100 men were
- 14:26working, aged 25 to 34.
- 14:28In 2021, 60 years later, that figure had
- 14:31fallen has fallen to 68%.
- 14:36So, for every 100 men out there who are
- 14:39aged 25 to 34,
- 14:4125 fewer men out of 100 are now working.
- 14:46They've disappeared.
- 14:47They're gone.
- 14:49They've left the workforce. Men are
- 14:52struggling
- 14:54economically. This may have impacted
- 14:57some of you
- 14:58in different ways. This isn't me blaming
- 15:01men for this. This is me simply trying
- 15:03to understand where men are today. And
- 15:07that in itself, brothers,
- 15:10is an act of compassion.
- 15:12To understand where someone is is itself
- 15:16compassionate. And there is very little
- 15:19compassion toward men. But I pray we can
- 15:22show it in our three sessions together
- 15:25this weekend. Second, men are struggling
- 15:28educationally.
- 15:31Men are struggling educationally in
- 15:33tremendous fashion. The enrollment
- 15:36decline in college and university has
- 15:39reached epic epic proportions among men.
- 15:43For every one woman who drops out of
- 15:45college today,
- 15:47seven men drop out.
- 15:50One woman drops out of UC Irvine, seven
- 15:53young men drop out of UC Irvine.
- 15:57That is not a mere trend.
- 16:00That is a landslide.
- 16:02And it's telling us something vital if
- 16:04we're paying attention, if we care
- 16:07about men. It's telling us that men
- 16:10again
- 16:12are disappearing into thin air, and
- 16:14nobody seems to care about them or know
- 16:17where they're going. Third, men are
- 16:19struggling spiritually.
- 16:22Many men are battling addiction to lust
- 16:24today, enslavement
- 16:26to the flesh.
- 16:28About 70% of men aged 18 to 24 view
- 16:32pornography on a monthly basis. Seven
- 16:35out of 10 young men. If those of you who
- 16:38work with young men remember what is
- 16:41happening now, you know that when you're
- 16:43talking to young men about pornography
- 16:45today,
- 16:47it used to be that you would assume that
- 16:49only a few of them were battling it.
- 16:51Now, you almost have to assume all of
- 16:54them
- 16:55are battling it and giving in to it. Not
- 16:58that necessarily everyone is, but the
- 17:01stats tell us a terrifying reality.
- 17:05With seven out of 10 college-age men
- 17:08basically ensnared to pornography.
- 17:12Pornography use, contra what people tell
- 17:14us, told us for years, is not neutral.
- 17:18Do you remember the argument that really
- 17:20had a lot of pull about 20 years ago?
- 17:24That went something like this.
- 17:26It doesn't matter what somebody else
- 17:28does in their bedroom or the privacy of
- 17:31their home. Sure, maybe things matter in
- 17:33the public square, but when I go into my
- 17:36house, that's no one else's business and
- 17:39no one has anything to say about that.
- 17:41Do you remember that kind of argument
- 17:42made with regard to homose-
- 17:44homosexuality and gay marriage and these
- 17:46sorts of topics? Christians were said to
- 17:48basically steer clear, stay out of this
- 17:50kind of material. Uh just leave me
- 17:52alone, you do your thing, I'll do mine.
- 17:54It has no effect.
- 17:56Brothers,
- 17:57nothing could be a bigger lie
- 18:01than that separation.
- 18:03Who you are in the privacy of your home
- 18:07is who you are in public.
- 18:09You may be able to pretend that there's
- 18:11a difference between the two. You may be
- 18:13able to fool people,
- 18:15but you're not fooling yourself,
- 18:17and you're not fooling God.
- 18:20If you use pornography, for example,
- 18:22privately
- 18:24at home
- 18:25on a regular basis, it increases the
- 18:29marital infidelity rate. Of course,
- 18:31pornography is marital infidelity, but
- 18:33in terms of physical infidelity, by more
- 18:36than 300%.
- 18:40Your private habits
- 18:42make a massive difference
- 18:45on your broader actions. You can't live
- 18:48one way in the dark
- 18:51and live the same way in the light.
- 18:54Who you are in private is who you are in
- 18:58public. And if you are giving in to
- 19:00sexual sin left and right in the privacy
- 19:03of your own home, that is going to have
- 19:05a massive effect on your broader life.
- 19:09At the same time that many men are
- 19:10losing the battle with temptation.
- 19:12They're not going to church. Uh Uh stats
- 19:15tell us that for every six women who go
- 19:17to church, four men go to church. So,
- 19:20men are just frankly not doing what you
- 19:22have done tonight on a Friday night.
- 19:24Thank you for being here. Men are not
- 19:27usually coming to church in a lot of
- 19:29contexts. They're dropping out. But get
- 19:32this, when a woman starts going to
- 19:34church, her kids will come with her
- 19:37about 17% of the time. They'll end up as
- 19:40regular attenders in the church.
- 19:43When a man starts going to church,
- 19:46about 93% of the time the kids will end
- 19:49up regular attenders in the church.
- 19:51What does that tell us?
- 19:54It tells us that more than we even know,
- 19:57our kids are looking to us.
- 20:00Our kids are looking to fathers
- 20:02to shape themselves, to figure out the
- 20:05world, to decide what truly matters.
- 20:08Men,
- 20:09wherever you are in terms of your
- 20:11spiritual state, wherever you are with
- 20:14the battle with lust, I want you to hear
- 20:16this. We're going to repeat this tonight
- 20:19and tomorrow. You can change.
- 20:22You can grow.
- 20:23God will help you. God will work in you
- 20:26by His gospel and His grace.
- 20:29God can heal you. God can heal your
- 20:31marriage. God can heal broken
- 20:34relationships with your children.
- 20:36God can restore the years the locust has
- 20:39eaten. God can strengthen you
- 20:41vocationally.
- 20:43I have seriously dire news to bring to
- 20:46you in this first session, but I'm not
- 20:48going to stay there for long because I'm
- 20:50a man of the Bible. God has saved me
- 20:52like He has saved many of you, and I
- 20:54thus have tremendous optimism in God,
- 20:57and I know through God's own work with a
- 21:01sinner like me that He can take a sinner
- 21:04like you, and He can change you, He can
- 21:06grow you, he can restore you, he can
- 21:09help you, he can rebuild you. So,
- 21:12wherever you are tonight, hear that.
- 21:15Hear that when we're dealing with God,
- 21:18we're dealing with the divine being of
- 21:20infinite possibilities who makes all
- 21:23things new through his mercy and his
- 21:25grace. So, if those stats it yes, amen.
- 21:28If those stats on pornography
- 21:32if they apply to you
- 21:34right now
- 21:36I'm not here
- 21:38to shout you out of the room and send
- 21:40you to the exits.
- 21:42I'm not.
- 21:45I don't want you to leave.
- 21:47I want you to stay. I want you to get to
- 21:49know guys here. I want you to have fun
- 21:50at bowling after this. I want you to
- 21:52show up tomorrow morning and I want you
- 21:54to hear that you're a sinner just like
- 21:56me.
- 21:57And that there is hope for you.
- 22:00And that you can break this tonight, but
- 22:02it's not going to come from messing
- 22:05around with your sin any further.
- 22:07Brothers
- 22:08here is the word on pornography. Here's
- 22:11a minor piece of guidance. Stop looking
- 22:16at pornography. Stop tonight.
- 22:20Go cold turkey.
- 22:23Pray to God.
- 22:26Pray to God for strength to overcome
- 22:30this enslavement of the flesh. If you're
- 22:34battling this, you are not alone.
- 22:37All of us men in this image-saturated
- 22:41culture where women do really dress very
- 22:44immodestly in a lot of settings, we are
- 22:47struggling. We are fighting every day
- 22:50for our lives and as Christian men for
- 22:52our purity. You are not alone. The grace
- 22:56of God though is stronger than your sin.
- 22:59The grace of God is stronger than sin.
- 23:01Does anyone believe that tonight? Amen.
- 23:04[applause]
- 23:05Amen.
- 23:07So, you are not overmatched by whatever
- 23:10struggle you come into this room this
- 23:13room bringing. You are not overmatched
- 23:16in Christ. In yourself, you are weak and
- 23:20ultimately, you are powerless. But, in
- 23:23the cross of Jesus Christ and the
- 23:26resurrection of Jesus Christ, sin is
- 23:29overcome. And when you repent of your
- 23:31sin and you trust in the name of Jesus
- 23:34Christ, sin's power truly is broken. And
- 23:38if you are a Christian and you have
- 23:40slipped into patterns of sin, you can go
- 23:43back to the cross and you can go back to
- 23:46the fountain of God's mercy and grace
- 23:48and you can start anew.
- 23:51You can always start anew in the
- 23:53Christian faith.
- 23:55There is never a point where you have
- 23:57missed the start anew plan.
- 24:01The train always comes back to the
- 24:03station and God is always in the
- 24:05business of receiving repentant sinners.
- 24:09The light on God the heavenly father's
- 24:12porch
- 24:13is always on
- 24:15and prodigals
- 24:16can come home at any hour of the day
- 24:21or night, no matter how dark it may feel
- 24:26for you.
- 24:28Men are struggling physically for
- 24:30struggling physically.
- 24:33The grip strength by one measure of
- 24:35physical strength of men of college men
- 24:38has declined in just 20 years from 117
- 24:43pounds of force when you grip your word,
- 24:45you grip it and don't let it go, right?
- 24:47Well, that used to grip it with 117
- 24:50pounds of force on average if you were a
- 24:51college age man. Today, you grip it with
- 24:5398 pounds of force. So, men are
- 24:58physically
- 24:59getting weaker. And we're getting weaker
- 25:02when there is no war, we're getting
- 25:05weaker when there has never been more
- 25:07food on the shelves, we're getting
- 25:09weaker when lots of us have free time,
- 25:12so-called, where we can work out or
- 25:14exercise, and yet something
- 25:18is happening
- 25:19to men.
- 25:21And it's something bigger than just it's
- 25:23hard to find hours with your job in the
- 25:26day or something like this.
- 25:29There's a mindset that is affecting men
- 25:32that I call plastic manhood.
- 25:36With a plastic manhood lifestyle, talk
- 25:39more about it tomorrow, but I'll quickly
- 25:40intro it here. You lead a life where
- 25:44your whole life is basically simulated,
- 25:48artificial, on screens.
- 25:51And there's not really any involvement
- 25:54in the real flesh and blood world that
- 25:56God has made. And what happens is you
- 25:59can just almost become a digitized being
- 26:04in this day and age. I'm not against
- 26:06computers, I'm not against tablets, I'm
- 26:08not against smartphones, I'm not against
- 26:10jobs in tech of all kinds. I'm not here
- 26:12to say any of that. I am here to say
- 26:14though, in this digital age, you have to
- 26:17be very careful that you as a man are
- 26:20not lured by our culture into a passive
- 26:24appetite-driven
- 26:26plastic life where you risk nothing,
- 26:30where you don't steward your body, where
- 26:32you do consume that pornography over and
- 26:35over on a tablet or a device, where you
- 26:38do just gorge yourself on food. You have
- 26:41to stop for a minute and say to yourself
- 26:43at some point, "Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait.
- 26:45Wait. Wait."
- 26:48What spell am I under?
- 26:51What sinister force wants me consuming
- 26:54unhealthy things all the time? Whether
- 26:57it's spiritual or physical or otherwise.
- 26:59What what power is operating in my life
- 27:03that I'm not aware of? I'm not seeing
- 27:05it, but there is an impulse right now
- 27:09and I am getting weaker and weaker. And
- 27:12I have no strength and I have no control
- 27:16over my desires. I am enslaved to my
- 27:18appetites.
- 27:20I'm addicted to this, this, this, and
- 27:22this and I can't seem to make any
- 27:25progress. I feel listless. I feel
- 27:28hopeless. I don't know what to do. What
- 27:31is going on with me?
- 27:33Brothers,
- 27:34there are spiritual forces
- 27:37and powers in the cosmos
- 27:40that want you to lead
- 27:42a plastic manly existence that is no
- 27:46existence at all. And part of it is you
- 27:49literally losing your body.
- 27:53I don't mean, as you can already tell by
- 27:55virtue of me being in the bright lights
- 27:57up here at the great height of 5 ft 7,
- 28:00that you need to become the next
- 28:03Schwarzenegger, okay? I'm not calling
- 28:06you to go out and bench press 350 by
- 28:10next Wednesday. That's not the takeaway
- 28:12from the men's conference
- 28:14with yours very truly.
- 28:16What I am trying to say though
- 28:19is it is not a good thing for you and me
- 28:23to have lost dominion of our body.
- 28:26The body and the soul are connected. God
- 28:30gave you your body. Your body is a gift
- 28:33of God. It's under God's total
- 28:36providential control, but you are
- 28:38responsible for stewarding your body.
- 28:41You are responsible in a 1 Corinthians
- 28:449:27 sense for not letting your body
- 28:48enslave you. You rule your body. There's
- 28:51a term here in fact that is very
- 28:53important that we've lost.
- 28:55We talk about self-control. Self-control
- 28:57is a good term. You know what better
- 28:59term is?
- 29:00Self-rule.
- 29:02Self-rule. I don't mean in a secular
- 29:05sense.
- 29:07I mean what Paul talks about in that
- 29:09passage, 1 Corinthians 9:27.
- 29:11Where you, under the influence of the
- 29:13Holy Spirit, say, "God gave me this to
- 29:17work with and I need to work with this
- 29:20and I need to subdue my body and I need
- 29:23to make it my slave so that I can do the
- 29:26spiritual work God has for me to do. I
- 29:29need to be able to defend my loved ones.
- 29:32I need to be able to work a job. I need
- 29:34to be able to live the years God wants
- 29:36me to live on this earth and have the
- 29:38influence God wants me to have. I I
- 29:40don't want to take that away. I want to
- 29:43steward this body and I've got to push
- 29:45back against the culture. Why does the
- 29:47culture
- 29:48want us to be fat, out of shape,
- 29:52listless, in pain, struggling,
- 29:56addicted? Why does our culture want
- 29:58this?
- 30:00Why does it encourage us to do this?
- 30:04Why are we consuming things
- 30:06that are very, very unhealthy and bad
- 30:09for us
- 30:11almost thoughtlessly?
- 30:13It's almost like
- 30:15we have a spiritual foe
- 30:17who wants to destroy us
- 30:19and who will destroy us, yes, in one
- 30:21action that we undertake, one terrible
- 30:24lustful moment with a woman or something
- 30:26like this, but what if we're being
- 30:28destroyed
- 30:30one hour at a time,
- 30:32one day at a time,
- 30:34one month at a time,
- 30:36one year at a time?
- 30:38Brothers, is the Christian faith
- 30:40a faith where you surrender to Satan
- 30:43and let him destroy you.
- 30:45Is that the Christian faith?
- 30:47Is that what this teaches?
- 30:49It's the opposite. It's that you arm up
- 30:53in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone
- 30:56and you go to war against the devil
- 30:58every day. You fight Ephesians 6:12. I
- 31:01fight against principalities and powers
- 31:04in the heavenly realms who want our
- 31:07destruction. That's the Christian life.
- 31:10Men are struggling physically, but
- 31:11here's the good news.
- 31:13We can take dominion. We can punch back.
- 31:17Fifth, men are struggling in fatherless
- 31:20homes.
- 31:21Some of you are from a
- 31:24fatherless home.
- 31:26Some of you did not have a
- 31:28strong relationship with your father.
- 31:31And that has marked you
- 31:33all your days.
- 31:35And we have real compassion for men in
- 31:37that situation.
- 31:39There's a term in psychology for that.
- 31:42It's the father wound. It's when you
- 31:45don't have a close relationship with
- 31:47your father or if you did have a dad in
- 31:49your home, he didn't draw near to you. I
- 31:52can't tell you how often
- 31:54I engage men or speak to men
- 31:57and older men in particular will tell me
- 32:00my dad never said he loved me.
- 32:05I never once heard that.
- 32:08And a fair number of men will say
- 32:10my dad never hugged me. You know, my dad
- 32:13never drew me in.
- 32:15My dad never really
- 32:17connected with me.
- 32:19And it breaks my heart every time
- 32:22I hear it because there's almost nothing
- 32:24simpler and easier to do than tell our
- 32:27kids
- 32:29we love them
- 32:30and bring them close. Our boys, yes, our
- 32:33boys.
- 32:35And yet it's so
- 32:37rare to find men
- 32:40who express
- 32:42love for their children in this forsaken
- 32:45evil world, brothers.
- 32:48There's all kinds of fatherless homes
- 32:50out there in different forms
- 32:53and they're having a tremendous effect.
- 32:55Today, one out of every three American
- 32:58children comes from a broken home.
- 33:02One
- 33:03out of three.
- 33:06And 80% of single-parent homes,
- 33:09according to the Atlantic,
- 33:12are
- 33:13fatherless homes.
- 33:17God is the one who made the family.
- 33:22Not gender theorists.
- 33:25Not professors. Not celebrities. Not
- 33:28entertainers.
- 33:29When God made the family,
- 33:32he formed it around
- 33:34a man.
- 33:36He called the man, the first man, Adam,
- 33:38to leave father and mother and take one
- 33:42wife
- 33:43and hold fast to her.
- 33:46He didn't call the woman to hold fast to
- 33:49the man.
- 33:50He called the man to hold fast to the
- 33:52woman.
- 33:53You see, the man is supposed to be the
- 33:56pillar of the home, not in the sense
- 33:57that the woman is unimportant,
- 33:59absolutely not, but in the sense that
- 34:02that man is planted like an oak
- 34:05by rivers of living water.
- 34:08And a godly man is a man who looks at
- 34:11his wife in the eye or looks his kids in
- 34:13the eye or finds a way to say this.
- 34:15He's He looks at them and he says, "I'm
- 34:17never leaving you.
- 34:21I'm not walking out on you."
- 34:24Do you know the security that gives a
- 34:27child when a dad says that to them or or
- 34:30even just communicates that through
- 34:33warmth
- 34:34and tenderness. There is no substitute
- 34:39for a father who is present and loving
- 34:43and connected and available
- 34:47and forgiving.
- 34:50Alongside a mother, alongside a wife,
- 34:52that is the way the Lord has set up the
- 34:54family. And the family is the first
- 34:56institution, it precedes government, it
- 34:59precedes the church, it precedes any
- 35:02other institution. The family is where
- 35:04God has concentrated so much. The family
- 35:06is where disciples are to be made. The
- 35:09family is where fathers and mothers get
- 35:11roughly 18 to 20 years in the American
- 35:14form with their children to disciple
- 35:17them one day at a time. And a huge part
- 35:21of that presence on the part of a father
- 35:24is bringing his kids close,
- 35:27being tender to them,
- 35:29being kind to them,
- 35:31being engaged with them, paying
- 35:34attention to them,
- 35:38loving them,
- 35:40telling those kids
- 35:42I love you.
- 35:43When children have that,
- 35:46in an earthly sense at least,
- 35:48children have security.
- 35:51Take that away from kids
- 35:53and they have no security.
- 35:55And they no longer have a living
- 35:57embodiment of the heavenly Father that
- 36:00God intends them
- 36:02to have. Men,
- 36:04your commitment to your wife
- 36:07matters far more than you know.
- 36:09And your commitment to your wife is
- 36:12under far greater attack than you know
- 36:16today.
- 36:17Satan is destroying marriages left and
- 36:20right. It's not just like a 20-something
- 36:23or 30-something's problem. Satan is
- 36:25destroying marriages of men who are in
- 36:27their 40s, in their 50s, in their 60s,
- 36:32in their 70s.
- 36:33Satan with no-fault divorce has again
- 36:37made an a whole institution dependent on
- 36:40feelings. Satan keeps doing this and
- 36:43people keep buying it where we think
- 36:47that things that God has made are not
- 36:50dependent on God's design, God's truth,
- 36:53things that God has made are dependent
- 36:55on our feelings, our desires, our whims.
- 37:00Brothers, if our marriages are based on
- 37:03our feelings, I have news for you.
- 37:06They're not going to last, are they?
- 37:08You remember the high of your wedding
- 37:10day or the first week or the first 2
- 37:13weeks or whatever, maybe the first year,
- 37:16maybe the first 5 years, but at some
- 37:19point every marriage starts to hit real
- 37:22challenges and it is no longer surviving
- 37:25on emotion alone. You cross the point
- 37:30where you think, "This is challenging.
- 37:33I am not perfectly fitted for this.
- 37:37She does not understand me the way I
- 37:40wish she did."
- 37:41You get into some communication
- 37:43challenges.
- 37:45You get into some bitterness.
- 37:48You have some ripples in things.
- 37:50[snorts]
- 37:51You try to communicate, you try to
- 37:52actually heal thing It doesn't go great.
- 37:55The longer you're in marriage, the more
- 37:57this happens. And when you have a
- 38:00conception of marriage that tells men or
- 38:02women, "When your feelings drop out, you
- 38:06should just leave. It's not fulfilling
- 38:08for you anymore." What happens is that
- 38:11marriages will crumble. But marriage is
- 38:14to be based on something stronger than
- 38:17feelings. Marriage is based on God's
- 38:20design. Marriage is based on God's
- 38:24wisdom. Marriage is very challenging in
- 38:28a sinful world. It's not supposed to be
- 38:32easy. It's supposed to be costly. It
- 38:35costs you everything, [clears throat]
- 38:37doesn't it? It's very challenging, but
- 38:40it's worth it. It's a glorious
- 38:42institution. It images the love Jesus
- 38:44Christ has for his church and the love
- 38:47the church has for Jesus Christ.
- 38:49Marriage is worth all the sacrifice. It
- 38:51is worth all the investment. It is worth
- 38:54pulling the chairs together at the
- 38:56kitchen table when things are not going
- 38:58well and saying, "Honey, I've got to
- 38:59lead in this.
- 39:01I know we're a little bit out of rhythm
- 39:02here. We may be a lot out of rhythm, but
- 39:04I want to heal this. I want to work on
- 39:07this. I want to rebuild with you. I love
- 39:10you. I'm never leaving you. Let's, by
- 39:13God's grace,
- 39:14rebuild."
- 39:16That's what the grace of God does for
- 39:17us.
- 39:19That's what God wants from us. And if
- 39:21your marriage has failed,
- 39:23God will still work in you. You are not
- 39:26cast off. You are not a lesser man.
- 39:30If there is real pain and wreckage and
- 39:32chaos in your background, God will
- 39:35actually not just forgive you for that.
- 39:39God will also, when you repent and trust
- 39:41Christ, God will also use your pain to
- 39:46help others.
- 39:48God is a redeeming God. Even the
- 39:51toughest things we go through,
- 39:54God uses them. God puts us to work so
- 39:57that even if things haven't gone great
- 39:59in certain forms of our life,
- 40:01God will help us.
- 40:03God will take us and make us a vessel of
- 40:06grace to others.
- 40:09How do you think Job
- 40:11counseled people
- 40:13after Job went through
- 40:17ferocious trials.
- 40:19Do you think Job
- 40:21was more compassionate or less
- 40:23compassionate after what he went
- 40:25through? After he watched all of his
- 40:28children die. After he lost all of his
- 40:31possessions.
- 40:33After his entire life crumbled to
- 40:36nothing.
- 40:38Does that feel like where you are?
- 40:40For any of you?
- 40:42Does it feel like your life has just
- 40:44crumbled to nothing? And there's nothing
- 40:47left. There's a lot of men out there who
- 40:50feel exactly like that. And what I am
- 40:53here to say is that God will use that
- 40:57from the word of God
- 40:59for you to be light to other people. God
- 41:04will change your whole story. I read a
- 41:07story of a guy who got drunk, drove
- 41:10drunk, and killed a young woman.
- 41:14This is about 30 years ago.
- 41:16When he got to prison,
- 41:18he heard the gospel.
- 41:20He heard about Christ dying on the cross
- 41:22for our sins and rising from the grave.
- 41:25And it cut him to the heart. And he got
- 41:27saved on the spot. He
- 41:30He had no games to play
- 41:33about his his goodness, about his
- 41:35self-righteousness. He had none.
- 41:38He was a surrendered man. He was a
- 41:39defeated man. He had killed a woman,
- 41:43young woman, in the flush of life, the
- 41:45prime of life, from a happy, prospering
- 41:48family. He had nothing.
- 41:51The gospel
- 41:52found him
- 41:54at his lowest
- 41:56place.
- 41:57And he was able
- 42:00to reconnect with her family.
- 42:03And he was able to begin talking with
- 42:06her family. And eventually,
- 42:09her family
- 42:11completely
- 42:12forgave him.
- 42:14And what did he do?
- 42:16He didn't stop
- 42:18talking to people in prison.
- 42:21He started sharing the gospel with
- 42:24fellow prisoners, and he's had a
- 42:26ministry for years and years to men who
- 42:31enter prison just like him with nothing.
- 42:36With no hope.
- 42:37You see, God
- 42:39redeems
- 42:41even the darkest places of our lives.
- 42:46This is our God.
- 42:48We are men We are men. We are people of
- 42:50the cross, are we not?
- 42:52We are a people who know that God can
- 42:54take the worst evil man can devise, a
- 42:57Roman cross for the son of God, and God
- 43:00can use that for the greatest possible
- 43:02good to save all his people, to wash all
- 43:05of us clean, to atone for every sin, so
- 43:08that there is no sin left for us to
- 43:10atone for. It is all done. It is
- 43:12completely finished. The work of
- 43:14salvation then is not what you and I
- 43:17enter into and complete. The work of
- 43:19salvation is only that which we receive.
- 43:22That's it.
- 43:23That's it. The work is done. If you are
- 43:26here and you are low, all you must do is
- 43:29receive. If you're not a Christian, if
- 43:31you are a Christian, all you must do is
- 43:34receive again and again and again. The
- 43:38grace of God never runs dry. The
- 43:40fountain of mercy never dries up. It's
- 43:43always on. It's always there for you and
- 43:48for me.
- 43:49Sixth factor
- 43:51that shows us that men are struggling
- 43:53today is that men are targeted. Men are
- 43:55targeted.
- 43:56I've already mentioned this phrase toxic
- 43:59masculinity. I don't have to spell it
- 44:01out at further length.
- 44:03We can identify very quickly four major
- 44:07targets
- 44:09of men
- 44:12that have had a major effect on men
- 44:14today. And in noting these four targets
- 44:17in just a few minutes to come, I'm not
- 44:20saying that every man is not responsible
- 44:22for his own soul. He is. We're sinners.
- 44:25That's our fundamental problem before
- 44:26God. We're sinners.
- 44:29The blame goes back
- 44:31to us. But we do have to recognize in
- 44:34trying to understand what men are
- 44:36are up against, that there is indeed a
- 44:38war against men. And here is where you
- 44:41see four of the biggest guns against
- 44:44you, me, and men in general. First,
- 44:47there's a assault on the family.
- 44:50There's a devilish assault
- 44:52on the family.
- 44:54This has been happening in American
- 44:56culture and philosophy for at least 150
- 44:59years.
- 45:00You can think back to in the UK, the
- 45:02Communist Manifesto of 1871 where Marx
- 45:05and Engels began their call for reform
- 45:10with this sentence.
- 45:12Abolition of the family.
- 45:14Abolition of the family. If you've heard
- 45:17of Marxism, people think about it in
- 45:19economic terms. It's not merely
- 45:21economic. Marx wanted to destroy the
- 45:24creation order. Marx wanted to destroy
- 45:28the natural family, the God-made family.
- 45:31And this work is continued into the 20th
- 45:34century and the 21st century. In recent
- 45:37years, for example,
- 45:39the organization called Black Lives
- 45:41Matter said this about the family.
- 45:45We disrupt the Western-prescribed
- 45:47nuclear family structure requirement by
- 45:50supporting each other as extended
- 45:51families and villages that collectively
- 45:53care for one another, especially our
- 45:55children, to the degree that mothers,
- 45:57parents, and children are comfortable.
- 46:00What was missing in that last part?
- 46:03Men, fathers, yes? They're gone. They're
- 46:06erased from the platform. They don't
- 46:08matter. That's because in in a Marxist
- 46:12grid, men have had authority and power.
- 46:15And if you have authority and power of
- 46:16any kind over someone else in a Marxist
- 46:19grid, you're an oppressor of the other
- 46:21group. And so men who have been called
- 46:24to leadership in the home, the church,
- 46:26and society by God himself, men are
- 46:28oppressors of women. And that's what
- 46:31you're hearing talking in that kind of
- 46:34outlook. And so men are simply being
- 46:37erased today. Men are read as oppressive
- 46:41when they are strong in our society. And
- 46:44it's having tremendous effects. Target
- 46:47number two,
- 46:49the dominance of feminism.
- 46:51The dominance of feminism.
- 46:55One professor
- 46:56identified with the feminist movement
- 46:59said this,
- 47:00"If life is to survive on this planet,
- 47:02there must be a decontamination of the
- 47:04earth. I think this will be accompanied
- 47:06by an evolutionary process that will
- 47:08result in a drastic reduction of the
- 47:10population of males."
- 47:13Okay, so good.
- 47:16If life is to survive on this planet,
- 47:19men need to be thinned out. Well,
- 47:21there's a gentle, mild-mannered social
- 47:24program. That was Mary Daly.
- 47:28This is the thinking of a substantial
- 47:31portion,
- 47:33sadly, tragically, of ideological
- 47:35feminists over the last 50 to 60 years.
- 47:38There is the belief that men need to not
- 47:42just step back from leadership, but the
- 47:45population of men needs to be reduced.
- 47:49You and I can can hear that and can take
- 47:51that as an adult man and go,
- 47:53"That is ridiculous. By the way, how
- 47:55does life continue on this planet
- 47:57without men? But, that's getting a
- 47:59little technical
- 48:01in biological terms.
- 48:04But, think about how boys and young men
- 48:05are targeted by that.
- 48:07They're seen as contamination of the
- 48:09earth, brothers.
- 48:12Boys and young men are not contamination
- 48:14of the earth.
- 48:15We are living under madness.
- 48:19We are living under lies.
- 48:21Our boys really are being targeted, I'm
- 48:24here to tell you. Not by everyone out
- 48:26there, but by different influences who
- 48:28say things like this in public. This is
- 48:30a professor, Mary Daly.
- 48:33Linda Gordon, another long-time feminist
- 48:35voice, said this, "The nuclear family
- 48:38must be destroyed."
- 48:40Nuclear family must be destroyed. The
- 48:42breakup of families, she wrote, is an
- 48:44objectively revolutionary
- 48:46process.
- 48:48There are many influences in our society
- 48:51for no good reason at all who hate men
- 48:55and hate the family. I don't mean
- 48:56everyone on the left. I don't mean
- 48:58everyone who would
- 48:59claim the title feminist, but this is a
- 49:01real ideology that has had real
- 49:04effects.
- 49:06This is part of why our boys are seen as
- 49:09toxic.
- 49:11Target number three, attack on the
- 49:13fatherhood of God. The attack on the
- 49:15fatherhood of God.
- 49:19Feminist theologians have gone so far
- 49:20now
- 49:21as to rewrite the Lord's Prayer. The
- 49:24Lord's Prayer begins like this, as you
- 49:26will know.
- 49:27Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your
- 49:29name.
- 49:30Your kingdom come.
- 49:32Your will be done. And on it goes. The
- 49:34feminist theologians have revised the
- 49:36Lord's Prayer itself.
- 49:38Here is how they have revised it. I'm
- 49:39quoting.
- 49:41Our mother who is within us. We
- 49:43celebrate your many names. Your wisdom
- 49:45come, your will be done, unfolding from
- 49:47the depths within us.
- 49:49Well, I I know what depths are within
- 49:51you.
- 49:52There might be some barbecue depths
- 49:53within you right now
- 49:55that you are keeping contained. Thank
- 49:57you for that very important work
- 49:59at this men's event.
- 50:03This has actually been portrayed in a
- 50:05recent Apple commercial, in fact. I
- 50:07don't know if some of you saw this, the
- 50:09Apple commercial with Mother Nature
- 50:11and carbon elimination from all of the
- 50:16world. Mother Nature was this divine
- 50:18being. I'm I'm not making this up. This
- 50:20was a big commercial. Tim Cook himself,
- 50:23the head of Apple, was in this
- 50:24commercial. And Mother Nature is an
- 50:26angry, climate justice-driven
- 50:29god, which tells us fascinatingly that
- 50:31the technocrats today believe in a
- 50:33divine being.
- 50:34I thought new new atheism had won.
- 50:37I thought we were done with divine
- 50:40beings. No, we're good with actually a
- 50:42feminine goddess.
- 50:44The goddess divine. That's what our
- 50:46culture is good with. You know what our
- 50:48culture is not good with?
- 50:50God the Father.
- 50:52God the Father is now written out of
- 50:55the Lord's Prayer. There has been a
- 50:57massive attack in theological circles on
- 51:01God the Father. And I know who is behind
- 51:04it, and I'm guessing you might as well.
- 51:07Target number four, the growth of woke
- 51:10cancel culture.
- 51:12The growth of woke cancel culture.
- 51:16Our society, for the reasons I sketched
- 51:18just a minute ago, is now
- 51:20oppression-obsessed.
- 51:23And this has seeped into the church.
- 51:25It's seeped into society.
- 51:27It has rewritten and revised American
- 51:30history. It has caused the younger
- 51:32generations, at least in large form, to
- 51:35hate their country. It is destroying our
- 51:37country. It is destroying schools. It is
- 51:40destroying professions. It is destroying
- 51:43churches. Wokeness has had a terrible
- 51:46and tremendous impact. And now we all
- 51:50see ourselves, according to this
- 51:52ideology at least, as victims. We are
- 51:55oppressed by others who are oppressing
- 51:57us. And this means that men are read as
- 52:01oppressors of women because men do not
- 52:04have equal authority and equal strength
- 52:07in different context. Listen, equity,
- 52:09where everybody would be the same as in
- 52:12a Marxist vision or a socialist vision
- 52:14or a leftist vision, is a lie.
- 52:17It's a delusion. You can't make
- 52:19everybody the same.
- 52:21God doesn't make everybody the same.
- 52:25I would like
- 52:27to be playing at Staples Center right
- 52:31now.
- 52:33Or, if I was especially virtuous, the
- 52:35Boston Garden.
- 52:40Okay, now we're getting real.
- 52:43You were You were all polite before that
- 52:45one, weren't you?
- 52:47I grew up in Maine.
- 52:49Boston Celtics fan, 1980s.
- 52:53Outside of the blood of
- 52:55Outside of the blood of Christ, we don't
- 52:56like each other, do we?
- 53:02[laughter]
- 53:02I don't know what was just said, but I
- 53:03think it was against me. But anyway,
- 53:06I feel oppressed.
- 53:11Actually, the Lakers and Celtics are now
- 53:13tied for the most banner. Do you know
- 53:14all this? These are things I actually
- 53:16think about. It's kind of like the Roman
- 53:17Empire. I think about
- 53:20I think about this like three times a
- 53:22week. Just like, we're tied with the
- 53:23Lakers.
- 53:24This is This is serious.
- 53:28Well, I'm going to think about Maximus
- 53:29in Gladiator and be happier about that.
- 53:33Not for long, they said. Oh, we'll see
- 53:35about that.
- 53:36We'll see about that. We got a good team
- 53:38this year, baby. No, no, no, no. I like
- 53:41you guys. I like you guys. Okay. I would
- 53:43like to be in the NBA, but to cut to the
- 53:47quick, it didn't happen for me.
- 53:49I was not given certain abilities and
- 53:52certain, shall we say, genetic
- 53:54advantages. That's the way God made me,
- 53:56though, right? God has not made us the
- 53:59same. You could give two kids even from
- 54:02a very wealthy home. Let's say, kids of
- 54:04a billionaire. You could give them each
- 54:06a hundred million dollars. One of them
- 54:08would invest that and go on to become a
- 54:09CEO like his father. The other would
- 54:12start a poetry foundation and try to
- 54:15spread peace in the world and and be an
- 54:18agent of change. One is not better than
- 54:20the than the other necessarily. They
- 54:22they choose different paths with the
- 54:24money given them. Inequity does not owe
- 54:26only to oppression, but try telling this
- 54:29to our culture. Suffice it to say that
- 54:32men don't fit well in woke cancel
- 54:34culture. Men know they don't fit. It
- 54:37doesn't It doesn't work. Men need free
- 54:39speech. Men need to be able to debate
- 54:41things. Boys need to be able to learn to
- 54:43communicate. This is a terrible culture
- 54:45for our kids to be growing up in. Men do
- 54:48not fit in this. Men are not made to
- 54:51want uh to to sit quietly and and not
- 54:55share opinions and not hash things out.
- 54:58Men need to be able to do some of this,
- 55:00but our society has made such
- 55:02enterprises poisoned. What is the
- 55:04solution? I have just a few minutes
- 55:07left. What is the solution to all of
- 55:09this?
- 55:10I just gave you a lot of
- 55:15pretty discouraging material.
- 55:18Yeah?
- 55:19You feeling that? You glad you came to
- 55:21the men's conference? Great. At least
- 55:22you got the Lakers-Celtics thing. You
- 55:24hang on to that, baby.
- 55:26The solution, brothers, is very clearly
- 55:29laid out in scripture. And there is a
- 55:30solution to this problem and this moment
- 55:34right now.
- 55:35The solution to what ails us is
- 55:39strength.
- 55:44The solution is not to say
- 55:48that boys and young men are toxic
- 55:51and write them off.
- 55:53The solution is to train boys and young
- 55:56men to be men who are strong in God, not
- 56:01strong in themselves. Every man is weak
- 56:04in himself, but to be strong in the
- 56:06grace and mercy of God,
- 56:10which has a thousand good effects. You
- 56:12find this in the scripture. In 1 Kings
- 56:152,
- 56:16I referenced this earlier.
- 56:181 Kings 2:1,
- 56:21if you ever hear that the Bible doesn't
- 56:22call men to be strong,
- 56:24we got a Bible quiz to take.
- 56:271 Kings 2:1, when David's time to to die
- 56:30drew near, he commanded Solomon his son
- 56:32saying, "I'm about to go the way of all
- 56:34the earth. Be strong
- 56:37and show yourself
- 56:39a man
- 56:40and keep the charge of the Lord your
- 56:43God." And on it goes.
- 56:46What is David saying?
- 56:48David is saying to his boy, "You need to
- 56:51not be weak in a sinful way.
- 56:54You need to be strong in God. And by the
- 56:57way, you need to prove and show that
- 57:01you're a man." Boys need to be called
- 57:04up.
- 57:05Boys don't need standards taken away
- 57:08from them and defined down, so there is
- 57:11nothing for them to aspire to. Boys are
- 57:14born wanting to be strong. Boys want
- 57:17somebody to call them to become
- 57:19something greater than they are. Boys
- 57:22don't want a device-addicted
- 57:24life naturally. Boys want a father who
- 57:28invests in them and leads them by the
- 57:31hand into maturity and adulthood. And
- 57:34that is what David is communicating to
- 57:36his son, Solomon, be strong and show
- 57:40yourself a man. The way that you prove
- 57:43that you are a man
- 57:45is strength, but not strength like the
- 57:48world defines it, God-word strength,
- 57:50strength that is grounded in the word of
- 57:52God, strength that is grounded in
- 57:54obedience to God, powered by the grace
- 57:57of God. This is what David is calling
- 57:59Solomon to. You think, secondly, of the
- 58:02witness of Joshua 1.
- 58:04The witness of Joshua 1, where Yahweh
- 58:06says this to young Joshua, maybe a
- 58:10college-aged guy, not old, not seasoned.
- 58:14Yahweh comes directly to Joshua and says
- 58:18three times,
- 58:20Joshua 1:6, be strong and courageous,
- 58:23for you shall cause this people to
- 58:25inherit the land that I swore to their
- 58:27fathers to give them.
- 58:30Verse 7, only be strong and very
- 58:33courageous, being careful to do
- 58:35according to all the law that Moses, my
- 58:37servant, commanded you. Where How is
- 58:39strength defined? It's defined first in
- 58:42spiritual terms, first as God has made
- 58:45it, God has given it, do the law. By the
- 58:49grace of God, follow God. Verse 9, have
- 58:53I not commanded you, be strong and
- 58:57courageous?
- 58:59It still echoes in our time.
- 59:03Men are still being called by God to
- 59:07strength, strength that is found not in
- 59:11you, strength that is found in God.
- 59:15God will give you this strength. God
- 59:19That's what God is telling Joshua. He's
- 59:22saying to Joshua, you don't have to do
- 59:24this on your own. I'm going to be with
- 59:27you wherever you go." He says that in
- 59:29this passage. He's going to give him the
- 59:32strength. So, Joshua needs to look to
- 59:34God. What do men in desperate times do?
- 59:38They look to God.
- 59:41They call on God
- 59:43for strength.
- 59:45We see this thirdly in 1 Corinthians 16
- 59:48in the New Testament.
- 59:501 Corinthians 16:13, "Be watchful," Paul
- 59:53writes.
- 59:54Stand firm in the faith.
- 59:58Act like men.
- 1:00:00Be strong.
- 1:00:02Let all that you do
- 1:00:04be done
- 1:00:05in love.
- 1:00:07Andresestha in the Greek is translated
- 1:00:11act like men.
- 1:00:13Which is basically Paul saying
- 1:00:16what the Lord said in the Old Testament,
- 1:00:19be strong and courageous. It's just a
- 1:00:20New Testament way of saying that. Be
- 1:00:23strong and courageous, brothers.
- 1:00:25You and I don't have this in ourselves,
- 1:00:27but God's grace and mercy will make us
- 1:00:31strong and courageous.
- 1:00:33You and I are not called to make peace
- 1:00:36with the devil and his evil rule. You
- 1:00:38and I are called to resist the devil.
- 1:00:41You and I are called to put on the whole
- 1:00:43armor of God as the whole church is.
- 1:00:45Ephesians 6:10-20.
- 1:00:48Every Christian does these things, but
- 1:00:50men must lead in these things. We must
- 1:00:54once again, as in the days of the kings
- 1:00:57and the warriors, be strong and
- 1:00:59courageous in God. There is no other
- 1:01:02way. There is no other plan. There is no
- 1:01:05other program. The call of a godly man
- 1:01:08is to lead, protect, and provide. Lead,
- 1:01:12protect, and provide. And God will help
- 1:01:16us to do this.
- 1:01:18God loves calling men to tasks that are
- 1:01:22way too big for men. And then God loves
- 1:01:26to give men all the grace they need to
- 1:01:30do it. And God will do that for you.
- 1:01:33When God saved Saul and made him Paul,
- 1:01:38Saul had no strength in himself to then
- 1:01:42become the apostle to the Gentiles.
- 1:01:46He wasn't ready for that. It wasn't in
- 1:01:48him, but God equipped him for that.
- 1:01:52Whatever God has for you men, God will
- 1:01:55give you the strength for it. He will
- 1:01:58not leave you lacking. He is a generous
- 1:02:01and kind God.
- 1:02:04This is what scripture tells us. Second
- 1:02:06Corinthians 9:8 as we wrap up here in
- 1:02:10this first session.
- 1:02:12Second Corinthians 9:8, God is able to
- 1:02:14make all grace abound to you, so that
- 1:02:17having all sufficiency in all things at
- 1:02:19all times, you may abound in every good
- 1:02:22work.
- 1:02:24Second Timothy 2:13, if we are
- 1:02:27faithless, he remains faithful, for he
- 1:02:31cannot deny himself.
- 1:02:33First John 1:9,
- 1:02:35if we confess our sins,
- 1:02:37he is faithful and just to forgive us
- 1:02:40our sins and to cleanse us
- 1:02:43from all
- 1:02:44unrighteousness.
- 1:02:46Brothers,
- 1:02:49you are not toxic.
- 1:02:52Young men,
- 1:02:54you are not toxic.
- 1:02:57Boys, our boys who may not even be here,
- 1:03:01they are not toxic.
- 1:03:04What every man needs
- 1:03:06is what God freely extends to us.
- 1:03:09It is the grace of God. The culture may
- 1:03:14say that men are gone, extinct,
- 1:03:17outmoded, and unneeded.
- 1:03:19It is a lie.
- 1:03:21Brothers, we need you more than ever.
- 1:03:25Hear the ancient call.
- 1:03:29Be strong
- 1:03:30and show yourself
- 1:03:32a man. By the grace of God,
- 1:03:36you can do it.
- 1:03:37Let's pray.
- 1:03:39Father, please help us to live out
- 1:03:42the vision of your word. These are
- 1:03:44indeed evil days, but we know that you
- 1:03:46are a great God. You are a forgiving
- 1:03:48God. You are a loving God. You are the
- 1:03:51God
- 1:03:52who loves to welcome prodigal sinners
- 1:03:54home. You are the God, Jeremiah 31:3, of
- 1:03:58eternal love. You are the God who will
- 1:04:01not cast off his children. My prayer for
- 1:04:04these men of Compass and any guests who
- 1:04:07have come is that you will make them
- 1:04:09strong, strong in Christ, not strong in
- 1:04:13themselves. And I pray, Father, that you
- 1:04:15will unleash them in this community, in
- 1:04:18this state, in this region, in our
- 1:04:20country. I pray, Father God, that you
- 1:04:23will do a mighty work when the days are
- 1:04:25evil. Evil men create bad times, but
- 1:04:29strong men in God create good times. Let
- 1:04:32it be so once more, Father, we pray in
- 1:04:34Jesus' name. Amen.
