  2. 0:10Great readers make great writers,
  3. 0:12whilst great writers make great communicators,
  4. 0:15and great communicators make great persuaders.
  5. 0:17And you know what great persuaders make?
  6. 0:19They make good societies.
  7. 0:21And that's what this world needs.
  8. 0:23I think that it's totally crazy that all anyone ever talks about
  9. 0:27is games, TV shows, WhatsApp, Instagram,
  10. 0:32Bitmoji - I don't even know what that is; my brother just told me about it -
  11. 0:36WeChat, Kiki, Sarahah, and I could go on forever.
  12. 0:42Studies have shown that some kids these days
  13. 0:44even spend six and a half hours on a screen a day.
  14. 0:48I think we should draw attention to this problem.
  15. 0:51However, not reading can even result
  16. 0:53in making your brain less active or engaged.
  17. 0:57Just over the past year, I've enjoyed reading:
  18. 0:59'Winnetou' by Karl May,
  19. 1:02the 'Harry Potter' series, with eight books,
  20. 1:04the Roald Dahl series, with 12 books,
  21. 1:07and 'The Unwanteds' series, with seven books.
  22. 1:10And many, many single books in between.
  23. 1:13Some I've liked less; some I've liked more.
  24. 1:15But they all took me for such an adventure.
  25. 1:18Ask my family members.
  26. 1:20I'm a truly unhappy child
  27. 1:21when I don't have a good book to read right next to me.
  28. 1:25I love reading in places like my bed,
  29. 1:28on the move while walking, in the toilet, in queues, in vehicles,
  30. 1:34but more importantly, at home.
  31. 1:36I hide behind various corners of my house,
  32. 1:39so nobody can find me and make me do anything else.
  33. 1:42Once I even hid behind a flower pot and pretended to be the flower,
  34. 1:46not moving at all.
  35. 1:48Nobody could find me for ages.
  36. 1:50It was hilarious.
  37. 1:52I read everywhere.
  38. 1:53So for all of you skeptical people out there,
  39. 1:57let me tell you,
  40. 1:58when you have a good book to keep you company,
  41. 2:01there is nothing better in the universe.
  42. 2:04It takes you to places where you can't go, and lets you meet people you can't meet.
  43. 2:09Reading is love in action.
  44. 2:13And the positives are endless.
  45. 2:15Like, I usually never have to study for spelling tests,
  46. 2:19and it makes my vocabulary so good that it easily impresses any grown-up.
  47. 2:24Sometimes,
  48. 2:25the first thing I know, I've just had a short conversation with a grown-up,
  49. 2:29and the next thing I know, there's a room full of adults talking about me.
  50. 2:33I can't imagine my life without a book.
  51. 2:36What I'm comparing is the lost art
  52. 2:39of reading, writing, communicating and persuading
  53. 2:42to some of the great societal ills
  54. 2:45of the text message, the tweet and the snap.
  55. 2:48While these wonders of modern technology
  56. 2:51have their place,
  57. 2:52we, the young generation, have to hold on to reading.
  58. 2:56It's the key to our kingdom.
  59. 2:58So go out there, find a good book,
  60. 3:00not just any book, the best are the ones recommended by another kid,
  61. 3:04and just go for it!
  62. 3:06(Applause)
