The PLUG POPS OUT of this HOOF — Transcript

- 0:00hello and welcome back to Nate the hoof
- 0:02guy well it's pretty obvious with this
- 0:04cow exactly where that problem is but
- 0:07what's interesting is that the way she's
- 0:09walking and the way she's standing on
- 0:11this foot is going to actually tip us
- 0:12off to where this problem is before we
- 0:15even pick that foot up you can see as we
- 0:18get her in the shoot and take a look at
- 0:19this foot notice her toe notice how
- 0:22she's rocking back on her heels that toe
- 0:24is not even touching the ground and
- 0:27that's because she doesn't want to put
- 0:28pressure on that toe
- 0:30because of this look at the split in
- 0:33that toe the problem's going to be
- 0:35underneath there so let's get started on
- 0:37this and show you exactly where it
- 0:50is so as I mentioned sometimes cows can
- 0:53give away a little hints as to where
- 0:55that problem is before you even pick
- 0:57that foot up in this case the way she
- 0:59was rocking back on her heels told us
- 1:01that that problem was in her toes and
- 1:03also she's got one on her heels she will
- 1:06put the weight on her toes you can tell
- 1:09which claw it is if it's on a lateral
- 1:12Claw on the back foot she will turn her
- 1:14feet so that she's putting more pressure
- 1:16on the medial claw there's little things
- 1:18like that you can pick up just by
- 1:20watching them walk and that's kind of
- 1:21why I always like to do that before I
- 1:23put a cow in the shoot I'm watching to
- 1:25see how that foot lands how she's
- 1:27walking if those can give me a little
- 1:29bit of hints as to where that problem is
- 1:31going to be before I even pick it up
- 1:33because believe it or not sometimes
- 1:35these problems will be so small and so
- 1:37minor that you'll start to second guess
- 1:39yourself once you have that foot in the
- 1:40air you won't know for sure you'll look
- 1:42at it and think the problem might be
- 1:43here but you're not sure and you start
- 1:46to second guess if the problem was even
- 1:48on that
- 1:49claw but on this one it's pretty obvious
- 1:52where it is we've got some separation
- 1:54there right in the right hand corner of
- 1:56that Claw is where that problem is going
- 1:57to be so we're going to get to work on
- 1:59that you'll notice I got two different
- 2:01knives here one of the questions I get a
- 2:02lot is why are some knives thicker than
- 2:04the others it simply has to do with how
- 2:07often they've been sharpened always
- 2:09start them out when they're thicker I
- 2:11use those knives for more of the more uh
- 2:13aggressive cutting where I'm taking off
- 2:15bigger pieces but when I'm working on
- 2:17fine detail stuff like this I'm going to
- 2:19use that thinner bladed knife you can
- 2:21get those knives sharper and do more
- 2:23precise cutting with
- 2:28them
- 2:55usually when I'm filming a trim I try to
- 2:57be a little bit more cognizant of where
- 2:58I put my hands in relation to the camera
- 3:01in this case I failed I blocked it a
- 3:03little bit here you'll be able to see
- 3:04more here in a
- 3:25minute this dark colored horn right here
- 3:28is just some staining the problem is
- 3:30going to be right here in this corner so
- 3:31let's get to work on
- 3:42that when you have lesions in and around
- 3:45that toe triangle often times they are
- 3:47going to be associated with some
- 3:49pronounced lameness in that foot here
- 3:51you can see that horn is starting to
- 3:53push up a little bit the reason that is
- 3:55is because when that cow takes that step
- 3:57it's putting a lot of pressure toward
- 4:00that toe area and obviously when you
- 4:02have an a lesion in that little spot
- 4:05with a lot of pressure there it's going
- 4:07to create it's going to cause that cow
- 4:10to try to step differently to try to
- 4:12alleviate that so that's why you're
- 4:13going to see that pronounced lameness
- 4:15every time she puts that foot down
- 4:17there's a lot of pain associated with
- 4:18that so she tries to lift it up and
- 4:20tries to get that weight onto that other
- 4:23other foot so in this case because it's
- 4:26right along that white line that horn is
- 4:29actually working its way into that
- 4:31corium it's like pushed right up tight
- 4:33against it and that also makes it
- 4:36painful you can see here watch as that
- 4:39pressure escapes from that lesion area
- 4:43yikes she's going to feel better almost
- 4:46instantly just from that coming out of
- 4:47there you can see that little plug of
- 4:49debris that was holding all that
- 4:51pressure in now we got to get a block in
- 4:53that other claw and we'll go back to
- 4:54work to open this
- 4:58up
- 5:30have you ever put the block on the wrong
- 5:31claw before no but I put the glue on the
- 5:34wrong side of the block before in that
- 5:36case you have to start all
- 5:58over
- 6:17it's right in this corner where that
- 6:19horn is almost interwoven right into
- 6:21that corium it's these Corners are these
- 6:23areas that can be really particularly
- 6:25difficult to work in but you need to get
- 6:27that horn that's pushed up into that
- 6:29corium away from there because that's
- 6:31what's causing a lot of that discomfort
- 6:33you can see some area there that's
- 6:35starting to Bubble Up that's the area
- 6:37where we've got some separation
- 6:38underneath there and that horn that's
- 6:40intertwined into that corium so we got
- 6:42to tease that away try to get all of
- 6:44that loose horn out of there so we can
- 6:46get this cow back on the mend and take
- 6:48care of that discomfort that's bothering
- 6:58her
- 7:25this is the trickiest part of that trim
- 7:27if you look close you can see all those
- 7:29little edges that are working their way
- 7:31pushing right up tight to the corium got
- 7:33to try to get this cleaned out ways so I
- 7:35can see all of the edges then work my
- 7:38knife and up underneath those little
- 7:40flaps to try to cut those away if I
- 7:42leave those there all they're going to
- 7:44do is trap debris and irritate that area
- 7:46so I have to ease my knife up behind
- 7:48that and try to cut away as I pull those
- 7:50out and then once we get that completely
- 7:52free then we can get it all cleaned up
- 7:54and get it
- 7:58wrapped
- 8:16now we can get that salicylic acid wrap
- 8:18in place now salicylic acid does a
- 8:20couple of things number one it's going
- 8:22to exfoliate the that area pull away any
- 8:24of the the uh damaged tissue that might
- 8:27be there another thing that's it's going
- 8:28to do is it it's going to provide some
- 8:31pain relief some localized pain relief
- 8:33to the area and another thing it's going
- 8:34to do is help eliminate bacteria in that
- 8:37it's got a low PH so that's has a
- 8:41bacteria cidal effect here you can see
- 8:43her putting weight back on that claw and
- 8:46she's gone couple weeks we'll check back
- 8:48and see how she's doing hopefully that
- 8:50foot is a lot more comfortable then as
- 8:52always thanks for watching and we will
- 8:54see you all on the next
- 8:57one
