The Persephone Archetype: Why Some Women Must Go Through Hell to Find Their Throne | Carl Jung — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00There is a kind of woman who has been
- 0:01through something she cannot [music]
- 0:02fully explain.
- 0:04Not a single event. A season.
- 0:07A long, strange descent [music] into
- 0:09loss, pain, confusion, into a version of
- 0:11herself she did not choose and did not
- 0:13understand.
- 0:15And when people ask how she is doing,
- 0:17[music] she says fine.
- 0:18Because how do you describe a journey
- 0:20into the underworld to someone who has
- 0:21never been called there?
- 0:24You may know exactly what this feels
- 0:25like.
- 0:26The descent did not announce itself.
- 0:28[music] It began as a loss, a
- 0:30relationship, a role, a belief about who
- 0:33you were and what your life was supposed
- 0:35to look [music] like.
- 0:36And then another loss followed.
- 0:38And another.
- 0:39Not because you were unlucky,
- 0:41>> [music]
- 0:41>> because something in the architecture of
- 0:43your soul required it.
- 0:45Most people who survived what you have
- 0:46survived call it trauma.
- 0:48>> [music]
- 0:48>> Some call it depression. Some call it a
- 0:50dark night of the soul.
- 0:52These are all accurate in their way, but
- 0:55they do not fully name what happened.
- 0:57Carl Jung spent decades mapping the
- 0:59depths of the human [music] psyche, not
- 1:01its surface, not its symptoms, but its
- 1:03mythology.
- 1:05The living stories the unconscious tells
- 1:07about why we suffer and where [music]
- 1:09that suffering is trying to take us.
- 1:12And what he found, in the psychology of
- 1:14the feminine in particular,
- 1:15>> [music]
- 1:16>> was a pattern so ancient and so precise
- 1:19that it preceded written language.
- 1:21A pattern that described not just the
- 1:23suffering [music] you went through,
- 1:25but the reason you were chosen for it,
- 1:27the direction it was trying to move you,
- 1:30and what you were supposed to become on
- 1:31the [music] other side.
- 1:33The Greeks called it the Persephone
- 1:34myth. Jung called it the most complete
- 1:37map of feminine transformation that
- 1:39existed.
- 1:40This is not a story about victimhood. It
- 1:43is not a story about things happening to
- 1:44a passive woman. It is a story about a
- 1:47specific kind of soul that must go
- 1:49underground,
- 1:50must descend into the darkest possible
- 1:52[music] version of reality,
- 1:55precisely because of the queen she is
- 1:56capable [music] of becoming.
- 1:59The question is not whether you
- 2:00recognize the descent.
- 2:02If you are watching this,
- 2:04you already know what it is to lose the
- 2:05light.
- 2:07The question is whether you understand
- 2:08yet what the darkness [music] was
- 2:10actually doing to you,
- 2:12and why you had to eat the pomegranate
- 2:14seeds.
- 2:15Before Jung gave this pattern a
- 2:16psychological framework, [music] the
- 2:18women who lived through it had no map.
- 2:21They only had the experience. A world
- 2:24that had seemed reliable and safe
- 2:25suddenly [music] cracking open.
- 2:27The future they thought was secured,
- 2:29gone.
- 2:30The relationships they had built their
- 2:32identity around changed
- 2:33>> [music]
- 2:33>> or dissolved.
- 2:35The version of themselves they had
- 2:36performed so carefully for so long
- 2:38[music]
- 2:39exposed as insufficient. Most women who
- 2:41experienced this kind of loss describe
- 2:43the same internal weather.
- 2:45A strange combination of grief and
- 2:47numbness.
- 2:48The sense of having been torn from
- 2:50something,
- 2:50>> [music]
- 2:51>> like roots pulled from soil.
- 2:53And underneath all of it, a persistent
- 2:55question that keeps returning in quiet
- 2:57moments. Who am I now?
- 2:59That question is not a symptom of
- 3:01weakness. It is the beginning of
- 3:02everything.
- 3:04Because the Kore, the maiden, [music]
- 3:06the innocent version of the feminine
- 3:07does not ask that question.
- 3:10The Kore knows exactly who she is. She
- 3:12has a role, a place, a story. [music]
- 3:15She belongs to the upper world, the
- 3:16world of light, of season and growth, of
- 3:19the mother's garden.
- 3:21It is only when that world is taken from
- 3:23her, when she falls through the crack in
- 3:25the earth,
- 3:25>> [music]
- 3:25>> that the deeper question becomes
- 3:27possible.
- 3:29Jung observed this consistently in the
- 3:31women he worked with.
- 3:33The ones who had never suffered deeply
- 3:35>> [music]
- 3:35>> remained psychologically in what he
- 3:37called the Kore state. Beautiful,
- 3:39functional, connected to the surface
- 3:41world, but fundamentally unacquainted
- 3:43with their own depth.
- 3:45They had not been called below yet.
- 3:47The ones who had descended, even
- 3:49involuntarily,
- 3:50>> [music]
- 3:50>> even catastrophically, carried something
- 3:52in their eyes that the unascended women
- 3:54did not.
- 3:55A gravity.
- 3:56>> [music]
- 3:56>> A knowing.
- 3:58The beginnings of what would eventually
- 3:59become authority.
- 4:01In ancient Greece, there was a girl
- 4:03named Kore, [music] which means simply
- 4:04the maiden.
- 4:06She was the daughter of Demeter, goddess
- 4:07of the harvest.
- 4:09She lived in a world of perpetual
- 4:11spring, gathering flowers in a meadow,
- 4:13never knowing winter. She was beautiful,
- 4:15innocent, beloved, and [music] entirely
- 4:17unconscious.
- 4:19One day, the earth opened beneath her
- 4:20feet, and Hades, the god of the dead,
- 4:23[music] the ruler of the underworld,
- 4:24took her down.
- 4:26In the myth, this is described as an
- 4:28abduction.
- 4:30And for centuries, that framing defined
- 4:32how the story was read. Something was
- 4:34done to [music] her.
- 4:35She was a victim of a power that had no
- 4:37right to her.
- 4:38But Jung read the myth differently.
- 4:40He noticed that the myth, in many of its
- 4:42ancient versions, included a [music]
- 4:44detail that changes everything.
- 4:46Before the earth opened, Kore had
- 4:48reached out to pick a flower unlike any
- 4:50other.
- 4:51A narcissus with a hundred blooms,
- 4:54planted by the earth itself at the
- 4:55request of Hades.
- 4:57She reached for it.
- 4:59She was drawn [music] to it. The descent
- 5:01was not only an abduction.
- 5:03It was also, on some level, a beckoning
- 5:05that she moved toward.
- 5:07This is not a reading designed to remove
- 5:09responsibility from Hades or to minimize
- 5:11Kore's loss.
- 5:13It is a reading designed to locate what
- 5:15is most psychologically true.
- 5:17The soul that is ready for descent, that
- 5:20has reached the limits of the upper
- 5:21world life,
- 5:22>> [music]
- 5:23>> will be drawn toward the crack in the
- 5:24earth.
- 5:26Will reach for the flower that opens the
- 5:27ground. It will not feel like a choice.
- 5:29Nothing in the feminine descent feels
- 5:31like [music] a choice.
- 5:32It feels like catastrophe, like
- 5:34violation,
- 5:36like having the life you knew ripped
- 5:37away without consent.
- 5:40But beneath the feeling of catastrophe
- 5:42is a function.
- 5:43And Jung [music] spent decades trying to
- 5:45articulate what that function was,
- 5:48what the underworld was actually doing
- 5:49to the souls it called into [music] its
- 5:51depths. To understand what changes in
- 5:53the descent, you have to understand what
- 5:55Kore was before it.
- 5:57Jung described the initial state of the
- 5:59feminine psyche,
- 6:00before individuation, before the [music]
- 6:02descent, as a state of participation
- 6:04mystique,
- 6:06a French phrase that describes the
- 6:07experience of being undifferentiated
- 6:08[music]
- 6:09from the world around you.
- 6:12Merged with your mother's values, your
- 6:13culture's expectations,
- 6:15>> [music]
- 6:15>> your relationship's needs.
- 6:18The Kore does not know herself as
- 6:19separate.
- 6:21She knows herself [music] as daughter,
- 6:22as beloved, as the good one, as the one
- 6:24who fits.
- 6:25She is of the garden. She belongs to the
- 6:28upper world's rules.
- 6:30And she flourishes there because the
- 6:31upper world rewards exactly who she has
- 6:33been trained to be.
- 6:35She is agreeable. [music]
- 6:36She is lovely. She is useful. She does
- 6:39not cause problems. She does not ask too
- 6:41many questions. She does not disrupt the
- 6:43order of the meadow.
- 6:45And this is not a flaw. In its proper
- 6:47season, the Kore [music] state is a real
- 6:49and valid way of being.
- 6:51It contains its own wholeness, its own
- 6:53grace.
- 6:54But it is incomplete. [music]
- 6:56The Kore state, if it persists beyond
- 6:58its season, becomes a kind of
- 7:00limitation.
- 7:02A woman who remains in the Kore state
- 7:03past the point at which the psyche
- 7:05requires depth begins to carry [music] a
- 7:07specific kind of emptiness.
- 7:09The beauty is still there. The
- 7:11agreeableness is still there. But the
- 7:12gravity, [music]
- 7:13the authority, the grounded knowledge of
- 7:15what she is and what she will not
- 7:16become,
- 7:17>> [music]
- 7:17>> those have not yet arrived.
- 7:19And they cannot arrive through the upper
- 7:21world's means. They cannot be developed
- 7:23through success or approval or spiritual
- 7:26practice or even through genuine love.
- 7:29They can only arrive through the
- 7:30descent, [music]
- 7:31through the experience of losing the
- 7:33upper world entirely and surviving what
- 7:35comes next.
- 7:37This is what the underworld is for.
- 7:39Not punishment. Not cruelty.
- 7:42The development of what the meadow could
- 7:44never teach. Jung never described the
- 7:46Persephone myth as metaphor. He was very
- 7:49clear about this.
- 7:51The psychological process it described
- 7:52was literal.
- 7:54Meaning it referred to actual,
- 7:55observable, measurable [music] changes
- 7:57in how a woman related to herself, to
- 7:59others, to time, and to meaning.
- 8:02The descent has a structure. It is not
- 8:04chaos, even though it feels like chaos
- 8:06when you are inside it.
- 8:08The first phase is the rupture, the
- 8:10crack in the earth.
- 8:12This is the event, [music]
- 8:13or the accumulation of events,
- 8:15that breaks the Kore's relationship with
- 8:17the upper world.
- 8:18A betrayal.
- 8:19A loss.
- 8:21A collapse of the life she had built
- 8:22around a [music] role or a relationship
- 8:24or a belief.
- 8:26Something that was supposed to be
- 8:27permanent revealing [music] itself as
- 8:29impermanent.
- 8:31The rupture always feels
- 8:32disproportionate to its trigger.
- 8:35A woman who had been stable and
- 8:36functional and apparently thriving
- 8:38[music]
- 8:38can find herself completely undone by
- 8:40something that others observe as
- 8:42manageable.
- 8:43This is because the rupture is not
- 8:44really about the specific event. The
- 8:46event is [music] just the crack through
- 8:48which the call finally reaches her.
- 8:51The second phase is the disorientation,
- 8:52[music]
- 8:53the period after the rupture when the
- 8:55ground has gone and nothing reliable has
- 8:57appeared to take its place. [music]
- 8:59This is the falling.
- 9:01The darkness before the floor of the
- 9:03underworld appears.
- 9:05It is characterized by a profound loss
- 9:07of identity, of direction,
- 9:10of the story she had been telling about
- 9:11herself.
- 9:12>> [music]
- 9:12>> This phase is frequently mistaken for
- 9:14breakdown, and it is a breakdown, a very
- 9:17specific kind.
- 9:18The Kore identity is breaking down.
- 9:20[music] The maiden is dying, and what
- 9:22will replace her has not yet formed.
- 9:25The third phase is the dwelling, the
- 9:27time spent actually underground,
- 9:29>> [music]
- 9:30>> the period of living in what feels like
- 9:31exile from normal life, the period that
- 9:34from the outside can look like
- 9:35depression or stagnation or regression,
- 9:37[music]
- 9:39but which is, from the inside, a time of
- 9:41strange and significant learning.
- 9:43Not every woman is called to the
- 9:45underworld at the same time.
- 9:47Not every woman is called at all.
- 9:49At least not [music] in this particular
- 9:51way, through this particular depth.
- 9:53This matters to understand
- 9:55>> [music]
- 9:55>> because the Persephone descent has often
- 9:57been romanticized in ways that are not
- 9:59useful.
- 10:01It has been turned into a narrative
- 10:02about all suffering being
- 10:03transformative, all pain being
- 10:05purposeful, all loss being secretly
- 10:08[music] a gain.
- 10:10That is not what Jung said, and it is
- 10:12not what the myth actually describes.
- 10:15What the myth describes is a specific
- 10:17psychic constellation, [music]
- 10:19a specific type of feminine soul that
- 10:21carries within it a calling toward depth
- 10:23that the upper world cannot satisfy.
- 10:26A soul that has reached the limit of
- 10:28what lightness and agreeableness and
- 10:30belonging can teach.
- 10:32You can often identify this
- 10:33constellation in retrospect. [music]
- 10:36The women who descend into the
- 10:37underworld have frequently spent years,
- 10:39sometimes decades, being precisely who
- 10:42everyone needed them to be.
- 10:43>> [music]
- 10:44>> The good daughter, the devoted partner,
- 10:47the reliable professional,
- 10:48>> [music]
- 10:48>> the spiritual seeker, the one who holds
- 10:50it together.
- 10:52And at some point, beneath all that
- 10:53holding,
- 10:54>> [music]
- 10:54>> something begins to press.
- 10:56An unnamed dissatisfaction,
- 10:59a restlessness that looks like
- 11:00ingratitude because the [music] life is
- 11:02objectively fine,
- 11:03a hunger for something that cannot be
- 11:05named through the vocabulary of the
- 11:07upper world.
- 11:08>> [music]
- 11:08>> The underworld does not send for you
- 11:10because you deserve punishment. It sends
- 11:12for you because you have grown past what
- 11:14the meadow can offer.
- 11:16Because the queen inside you,
- 11:18the one who will eventually rule the
- 11:20kingdom of depth,
- 11:21>> [music]
- 11:21>> who will be able to guide other souls
- 11:23through darkness,
- 11:24who will understand what most people
- 11:26never learn to understand,
- 11:28cannot develop [music] in perpetual
- 11:30spring.
- 11:31She requires the specific education of
- 11:33the dark.
- 11:35And the education is not gentle.
- 11:37It does not care about your timeline or
- 11:39your comfort or your carefully
- 11:41constructed identity.
- 11:43It cares only about what it needs to
- 11:45produce.
- 11:46And what it needs [music] to produce is
- 11:47a woman who knows, from direct
- 11:49experience, that she can survive losing
- 11:52everything she thought she was.
- 11:55And that on the other side of that loss
- 11:57is something more real
- 11:58>> [music]
- 11:58>> than anything she had before. The first
- 12:01thing that grows in the underworld is
- 12:02the capacity for stillness. The upper
- 12:04world trains urgency.
- 12:06>> [music]
- 12:06>> It trains you to respond, to perform, to
- 12:09produce.
- 12:10The meadow is always moving, seasons
- 12:12cycling, flowers blooming and wilting,
- 12:14>> [music]
- 12:14>> the constant forward motion of growth.
- 12:17Kore in her meadow is always in the
- 12:19process of becoming [music] the next
- 12:20version of what is expected of her.
- 12:23Underground, the movement stops.
- 12:25And this is experienced [music]
- 12:26at first as death. The woman in the
- 12:29early phases of her descent often
- 12:31describes a terrifying absence of
- 12:33motivation,
- 12:33>> [music]
- 12:34>> of direction, of the forward pull that
- 12:36used to organize her days.
- 12:38>> [music]
- 12:38>> She cannot make herself want the things
- 12:41she is supposed to want. She cannot
- 12:43perform the enthusiasm she used to
- 12:45perform. [music]
- 12:46She sits in the stillness and is afraid
- 12:48of what it means that she cannot move.
- 12:51What it means is that the underworld has
- 12:53put her in school.
- 12:54And the first lesson is that she is not
- 12:56the movement. She is not the producing
- 12:58and the performing [music] and the
- 13:00becoming.
- 13:01Those were all the Kore's activities.
- 13:03And the Kore has been sent to die.
- 13:06What grows in the stillness is
- 13:07perception. [music]
- 13:09A woman who has been underground long
- 13:11enough begins to see in the dark,
- 13:13not literally, but psychologically.
- 13:16She begins to perceive things about
- 13:18people, [music] about situations, about
- 13:19herself, that were completely invisible
- 13:22to her before the descent.
- 13:24The social performances that others
- 13:26offer, she sees through. The emotional
- 13:28undercurrents that run beneath surface
- 13:30conversations, [music] she senses.
- 13:32The things people are not saying, she
- 13:34often knows before they know it
- 13:35themselves.
- 13:37This is not a supernatural gift.
- 13:39>> [music]
- 13:39>> It is a faculty that develops precisely
- 13:42because the surface world's distractions
- 13:44[music] have been removed.
- 13:46When you have nothing but darkness and
- 13:48your own inner world, you become very
- 13:50good at reading what lives beneath the
- 13:52surface [music] of things.
- 13:54The second thing that grows in the
- 13:55underworld is authority,
- 13:57>> [music]
- 13:57>> not the authority of position or
- 13:59expertise or social recognition.
- 14:01>> [music]
- 14:01>> Those are upper world authorities,
- 14:03earned through the upper world's
- 14:05mechanisms.
- 14:07The authority that develops underground
- 14:08is of a different order. [music]
- 14:10It is the authority of someone who has
- 14:12faced the absolute, who has lost what
- 14:14seemed unloseable and survived it,
- 14:17who has been stripped of every identity
- 14:18she once used to locate herself and
- 14:21found that she still exists.
- 14:23>> [music]
- 14:24>> This authority cannot be acquired any
- 14:26other way.
- 14:27It cannot be learned from books or
- 14:29developed through practice or granted by
- 14:31anyone. It can only be forged through
- 14:33the specific [music] temperature of
- 14:34genuine loss.
- 14:36And it is exactly this authority that
- 14:38allows Persephone to rule,
- 14:40not in spite of what she suffered,
- 14:42because of it.
- 14:44Tell me in the [music] comments, which
- 14:46phase of the descent do you recognize
- 14:47most clearly in your own life?
- 14:50The rupture, the disorientation, [music]
- 14:52or the dwelling underground?
- 14:54Write it below.
- 14:55Naming it is already the beginning of
- 14:57the map. Subscribe if you want to keep
- 14:59going. [music]
- 15:00What comes next is where the
- 15:01transformation stops being theory.
- 15:04Recognition is never abstract. It is
- 15:07always specific. It is always the moment
- 15:09when the idea on the screen stops being
- 15:11information [music]
- 15:12and becomes a mirror.
- 15:14The Persephone descent shows up in four
- 15:16distinct [music] patterns.
- 15:18Not everyone carries all four,
- 15:20but most women who have been called
- 15:22underground will find themselves in at
- 15:23least two of them, [music] sometimes in
- 15:25all four simultaneously.
- 15:28The first time I describe each pattern,
- 15:30I want you to do something simple.
- 15:33Notice the physical response in your
- 15:34body before your mind has a chance to
- 15:36evaluate it,
- 15:38because the body recognizes truth before
- 15:39the analytical mind does.
- 15:42The body will [music] tighten or exhale
- 15:44or go very still when something lands
- 15:46accurately.
- 15:47That physical response is the soul
- 15:49confirming what it already knows.
- 15:52These patterns are not diagnoses.
- 15:55They are not evidence that something
- 15:56went wrong.
- 15:57They are the recognizable footprints
- 15:59[music] of a woman who has been
- 16:00underground or who is currently in the
- 16:03descent.
- 16:04And knowing them for what they are
- 16:06changes the relationship you have with
- 16:08them completely. [music]
- 16:09The first pattern is this.
- 16:11Losses do not arrive alone.
- 16:14They arrive in clusters. You lose the
- 16:16relationship,
- 16:17>> [music]
- 16:17>> then you lose the job or the health or
- 16:19the friendship that had seemed separate
- 16:21from the relationship [music]
- 16:22but was somehow connected to it.
- 16:25Then the home
- 16:26or the version of yourself you had
- 16:28inhabited in that home.
- 16:30Then the belief [music] about what kind
- 16:31of person you were,
- 16:33the story you had been using to make
- 16:34sense of your own life. In psychology,
- 16:37this kind of cascading loss is sometimes
- 16:39described as compound grief.
- 16:41But that framing misses the most
- 16:43important thing about it.
- 16:45For a woman in the Persephone descent,
- 16:47the losses are not random.
- 16:49They are the systematic disassembly of
- 16:51the Kore identity.
- 16:53Everything that held the maiden in
- 16:54place, the relationships, the roles,
- 16:56[music] the contexts, the self-images,
- 16:59has to be removed for the descent to
- 17:00proceed. [music]
- 17:02The underworld is thorough. It does not
- 17:04take one thing and leave the others
- 17:06intact. It takes what it [music] needs,
- 17:09which is usually everything.
- 17:11And there is a quality to this
- 17:12thoroughness that women in the descent
- 17:14often describe in the same way.
- 17:16It feels [music] personal. It feels
- 17:18targeted, as if the losses are arriving
- 17:20with intention, as if something knows
- 17:22exactly what to remove and in what
- 17:24order.
- 17:26Jung would [music] say that feeling is
- 17:28accurate. The losses have intention. The
- 17:30intention belongs to the psyche itself,
- 17:33>> [music]
- 17:33>> to the deeper layer of the self that
- 17:35knows what the conscious self is not yet
- 17:37ready to hear.
- 17:38The psyche, removes what has to be
- 17:40removed to create the conditions in
- 17:42which the queen can develop. [music]
- 17:44This does not make the losses less real.
- 17:46It does not reduce the grief.
- 17:48What it does is remove one particular
- 17:50layer of the suffering,
- 17:52>> [music]
- 17:52>> the layer of meaninglessness,
- 17:54of why is this happening to me?
- 17:57The losses are happening for you, even
- 17:59when they are happening to you.
- 18:02The second [music] pattern is the
- 18:03numbness,
- 18:05not the flat emotional numbness of
- 18:06clinical depression, though it can look
- 18:08similar from the outside.
- 18:10Something more specific,
- 18:12a protective anesthesia that sets in
- 18:14during the deepest phases of the
- 18:16descent,
- 18:17the periods when feeling everything
- 18:19would be equivalent [music] to being
- 18:20destroyed.
- 18:23Women in the underworld often describe a
- 18:25moment when they simply stopped [music]
- 18:26being able to feel what they knew they
- 18:28were supposed to feel.
- 18:30They would attend a funeral and not cry.
- 18:33They would receive good news and feel
- 18:35nothing. [music]
- 18:36They would watch something painful
- 18:37happen and observe it with a strange
- 18:39dissociated calm, as if they were
- 18:42watching it from a slight distance.
- 18:44The people around them would often find
- 18:46this disturbing. [music]
- 18:47They would say, "You seem so calm. It is
- 18:50worrying."
- 18:51>> [music]
- 18:51>> Or do you not feel anything?
- 18:53Or they would make the more damaging
- 18:55assumption
- 18:56that the calm meant the woman did not
- 18:58really care, did not really suffer, had
- 19:01moved on more easily than they had
- 19:02expected.
- 19:04The opposite was true. The numbness was
- 19:06not the absence of feeling.
- 19:08It was the presence of too much feeling
- 19:10for the surface system [music] to
- 19:11process.
- 19:13The psyche, wise in its own way, had
- 19:16[music] installed a circuit breaker.
- 19:18It had brought the woman underground
- 19:19precisely because the underground's
- 19:21environment, its stillness, its
- 19:23darkness, [music] its removal from the
- 19:25demands of ordinary life, was the only
- 19:27place she could metabolize what had
- 19:29happened to her.
- 19:31The numbness is Persephone [music] in
- 19:32the first weeks after the abduction,
- 19:35still,
- 19:36disoriented, not yet the queen,
- 19:39but already changed,
- 19:40already in the process of becoming
- 19:42something the surface world cannot quite
- 19:44recognize.
- 19:46If you have lived in that numbness, if
- 19:48you have been the woman who seemed
- 19:49impossibly calm in the middle of
- 19:51catastrophe,
- 19:52what you were experiencing was not the
- 19:54absence of soul. [music] It was the
- 19:56presence of a soul doing something that
- 19:57could not be done any other way.
- 20:00The third pattern emerges in the middle
- 20:02phases of the descent, often after the
- 20:04initial acute phase [music] has passed.
- 20:07You discover that you are living in two
- 20:09registers simultaneously.
- 20:11The surface [music] register,
- 20:13the one that functions, that goes to
- 20:15work, that manages relationships and
- 20:17responsibilities and the practical
- 20:19demands of being a person in [music] the
- 20:21world.
- 20:22And the underground register, the one
- 20:24that knows something has changed
- 20:26irreversibly, [music]
- 20:27that is processing something enormous,
- 20:29that is slowly becoming someone the
- 20:31surface register does not yet recognize.
- 20:34These two registers do not always
- 20:36[music] communicate.
- 20:37There are days when the surface version
- 20:39of you performs perfectly well, makes
- 20:41decisions, has conversations, laughs at
- 20:44the appropriate moments.
- 20:46And the underground version watches from
- 20:48a slight remove,
- 20:50aware of everything the surface is
- 20:51managing to do, but not entirely present
- 20:54in it.
- 20:55People who know you, but do not know you
- 20:57well, will not [music] see the split.
- 20:59They will say you seem fine, you seem
- 21:01yourself, they are glad you are okay.
- 21:04>> [music]
- 21:04>> The people who know you deeply will
- 21:05sense it. They will say there is
- 21:07something different about you.
- 21:09They may not be able to name it. You may
- 21:11not be able to name it either,
- 21:13>> [music]
- 21:13>> but it is there.
- 21:15Jung described this as the tension
- 21:16between the persona and the developing
- 21:18[music] self.
- 21:20The persona, the social mask, continues
- 21:23to function because it must. The self,
- 21:25>> [music]
- 21:25>> the deeper identity that is being forged
- 21:28underground,
- 21:29continues to develop because it cannot
- 21:31stop.
- 21:33The double life is not a sign that you
- 21:34are fractured.
- 21:36It is a sign that you are in transition,
- 21:38that the Kore [music] and the Queen are
- 21:40coexisting in the same body,
- 21:42one still managing the surface world,
- 21:44one learning to rule the depths.
- 21:47The transition is complete when the
- 21:48Queen finally has more presence than the
- 21:50[music] Kore,
- 21:52when the underground register begins to
- 21:53feel more real than the surface one.
- 21:56The fourth pattern is the one most
- 21:58people do not [music] discuss,
- 21:59and it is perhaps the most important.
- 22:02After some time in the descent, after
- 22:04the losses and the numbness and the
- 22:06double [music] life,
- 22:07something unexpected begins to happen.
- 22:10The darkness starts to feel familiar.
- 22:13The underground starts to feel like home
- 22:14in a way the upper world no longer does.
- 22:18And when that happens, the prospect of
- 22:20returning [music] becomes frightening.
- 22:22Not because you have given up on life,
- 22:24but because you have become someone in
- 22:26the underworld who does not quite fit
- 22:27the life [music] waiting above.
- 22:30The relationships you had before the
- 22:31descent were calibrated to the Kore, to
- 22:34the agreeable, the beautiful, the
- 22:36uncomplicated. [music]
- 22:38The version of you that is emerging from
- 22:40the underground is none of those things.
- 22:43She is deeper, stranger,
- 22:45>> [music]
- 22:45>> more demanding of authenticity,
- 22:47less willing to perform a lightness she
- 22:49no longer feels. She does not know if
- 22:51the upper world has a place for [music]
- 22:52who she has become.
- 22:54This fear of return is not pathological,
- 22:57it is realistic.
- 22:59The woman who has been underground does
- 23:01return to a world that will not
- 23:02immediately recognize her. She will be
- 23:04expected to be who she was before.
- 23:07>> [music]
- 23:07>> She will be asked why she seems
- 23:08different, more serious, less easy to
- 23:11reach. And the fear underneath [music]
- 23:13the fear is this,
- 23:15that if she returns as who she now is,
- 23:17she will lose the connections she had
- 23:19before. [music]
- 23:20That the full Persephone,
- 23:22the one who has eaten the pomegranate
- 23:24seeds and cannot pretend the underground
- 23:26was not real,
- 23:28will not fit back into the Kore-shaped
- 23:29spaces that her life has reserved for
- 23:31her.
- 23:33This is true.
- 23:34>> [music]
- 23:34>> She will not fit. Some of those spaces
- 23:36will have to change shape.
- 23:38Some will dissolve entirely.
- 23:40But what she does not yet know, what she
- 23:43will only discover through the actual
- 23:44return, is that the connections that can
- 23:46hold the Queen are more real than
- 23:48anything [music] the Kore ever managed
- 23:50to build.
- 23:51And once you see how deeply this pattern
- 23:53runs,
- 23:54>> [music]
- 23:54>> the question becomes what to do about
- 23:56it.
- 23:57Jung spent decades developing a model of
- 24:00the psyche that could account for the
- 24:02full range of human [music]
- 24:03transformation,
- 24:05not just the surface adjustments that
- 24:07most of psychology concerned itself
- 24:08with, but the deep [music] structural
- 24:10changes that happen when a person
- 24:12undergoes genuine individuation,
- 24:15when the self begins to emerge from
- 24:17behind the masks and roles and
- 24:19conditioned identities. [music]
- 24:22For the feminine psyche specifically, he
- 24:24identified the Persephone myth [music]
- 24:25as the most complete available map.
- 24:28The architecture has five components,
- 24:30each corresponding to a phase of the
- 24:32descent [music]
- 24:33and transformation.
- 24:35Understanding them does not make the
- 24:37journey [music] easier.
- 24:39The underworld does not become less dark
- 24:40because you have a name for what is
- 24:42happening, [music]
- 24:43but it removes the dimension of
- 24:44confusion, the sense of being lost
- 24:46without coordinates.
- 24:49And that removal changes everything
- 24:51about how a woman relates to her own
- 24:52[music] process.
- 24:54The five components are Kore, the
- 24:56descent, the pomegranate, Hecate,
- 24:58[music] and the ascent. Each is a
- 25:00distinct psychological reality.
- 25:03Each contains its own lessons.
- 25:05And together they describe a complete
- 25:07arc, from the innocent girl in the
- 25:09meadow to the Queen of the underworld
- 25:11who rises each spring to remind the
- 25:13world what it cost her to be who she is.
- 25:15The Kore is not a problem. That needs to
- 25:18be said clearly. Much of modern
- 25:20psychological and spiritual discourse
- 25:22around the feminine has positioned the
- 25:23innocent,
- 25:24>> [music]
- 25:24>> agreeable, undeveloped feminine as
- 25:26something to be overcome as quickly as
- 25:28possible,
- 25:29as a weakness, [music] a trap, a stage
- 25:31to exit with urgency.
- 25:34Jung did not see it this way.
- 25:36He saw the Kore state as genuinely
- 25:38complete within its own season.
- 25:41The maiden has her own wholeness, a
- 25:42connection [music] to nature, to beauty,
- 25:44to the relational world, to the joy of
- 25:46belonging.
- 25:47These are real values, not
- 25:49compensations.
- 25:51The Kore becomes limiting only when she
- 25:53is asked to carry the psychic weight of
- 25:55a woman [music] who has grown beyond
- 25:56what the maiden's framework can hold,
- 25:59when the hunger for depth begins [music]
- 26:01that the meadow cannot feed,
- 26:02when the questions arrive that the upper
- 26:04world's vocabulary cannot answer.
- 26:07Before that moment, the Kore is who she
- 26:09is supposed to be.
- 26:11This matters practically because many
- 26:13women who enter the descent carry an
- 26:15additional layer of suffering,
- 26:17shame,
- 26:19the sense that they should have been
- 26:20stronger, deeper, more psychologically
- 26:22developed before the descent [music]
- 26:23took them,
- 26:25the sense that a truly mature woman
- 26:26would not have needed to be dragged
- 26:28underground.
- 26:30Jung's framework releases that [music]
- 26:31shame.
- 26:33The Kore does not descend because she
- 26:35was weak or naive or insufficiently
- 26:37developed. She descends because she was
- 26:40[music] ready,
- 26:41because the psyche, working on its own
- 26:43timetable, had determined that the
- 26:45Kore's season was complete,
- 26:47>> [music]
- 26:47>> and what came next required the
- 26:49education that only the underground
- 26:50could provide.
- 26:52The descent is not a failure of the
- 26:54maiden. [music]
- 26:55It is the maiden's graduation.
- 26:58And part of the grief work of the
- 26:59descent, real grief, not managed or
- 27:02intellectualized grief,
- 27:03>> [music]
- 27:04>> but the visceral mourning of something
- 27:05that was genuinely beautiful,
- 27:08is the grief of losing the Kore, of
- 27:10losing the simplicity and the lightness
- 27:12and the belonging [music]
- 27:12of the upper world.
- 27:14That loss is real. It deserves to be
- 27:16mourned. [music]
- 27:18The mistake is not the mourning. The
- 27:19mistake is getting stuck in the mourning
- 27:21rather than allowing it to complete.
- 27:23[music]
- 27:24The underworld, in Jung's psychological
- 27:26reading, is not a place of punishment.
- 27:29It is the unconscious. More
- 27:31specifically,
- 27:32>> [music]
- 27:32>> it is the parts of the self that the
- 27:34upper world required to be hidden,
- 27:36suppressed, or undeveloped in order
- 27:38[music] for the Kore to be accepted and
- 27:40loved and safe.
- 27:41Every woman who has lived successfully
- 27:43in the maiden's framework has done so by
- 27:45[music] becoming what was needed, by
- 27:47being small enough, agreeable enough,
- 27:50contained enough to belong.
- 27:52And the parts of her that could not fit
- 27:54that framework, [music]
- 27:55the rage, the authority, the sexuality,
- 27:58the hunger, the capacity for
- 28:00destruction, the willingness to be
- 28:01difficult, were sent underground.
- 28:04The underworld holds all of it.
- 28:07This is why the descent feels like
- 28:08[music] hell.
- 28:09You are not just losing the upper
- 28:11world's comforts.
- 28:13You are being forced into contact with
- 28:14everything you buried to stay
- 28:16acceptable. [music]
- 28:18The parts of yourself you do not
- 28:19recognize, the parts that frighten you,
- 28:21the parts that are raw and unintegrated,
- 28:24>> [music]
- 28:24>> and that carry enormous compressed
- 28:26energy from decades of suppression.
- 28:29But this is also why the underworld is
- 28:31the only place where the Queen can
- 28:33develop,
- 28:34because the Queen is made of exactly
- 28:35those materials.
- 28:38The woman who rules the kingdom of
- 28:39depth, who can guide others through loss
- 28:42and [music] darkness,
- 28:43who can face the absolute without
- 28:44flinching, who carries genuine authority
- 28:47rather than social permission,
- 28:50she is built from the very parts the
- 28:51Kore could not afford to show.
- 28:54The underworld is not doing something to
- 28:55[music] you.
- 28:56It is returning something to you.
- 28:59And the psychological work of the
- 29:00descent,
- 29:02the reason that simply surviving it is
- 29:04not enough,
- 29:05the reason that genuine transformation
- 29:07requires active engagement [music] with
- 29:09what the underground holds,
- 29:11is the work of recognizing and claiming
- 29:13what is being returned.
- 29:15The woman who survives the descent
- 29:17without doing this work emerges from it
- 29:19>> [music]
- 29:19>> damaged.
- 29:21She has been through the underworld, but
- 29:23she has not received what the underworld
- 29:25was [music] trying to give her.
- 29:27She comes back to the surface still
- 29:29identified with the Kore, shattered
- 29:31rather than transformed.
- 29:33The woman who does the work comes back
- 29:35[music] as Persephone,
- 29:36recognizable to everyone who knew the
- 29:38Kore,
- 29:39but unmistakably different,
- 29:41carrying something new in her bearing,
- 29:43in her eyes, in the quality of the
- 29:45silence she is [music] comfortable with.
- 29:47In the myth, Persephone is in the
- 29:49underworld for some time before she eats
- 29:51the pomegranate seeds.
- 29:53>> [music]
- 29:53>> And here is the detail the myth is
- 29:55careful to include.
- 29:57She eats them knowingly. [music]
- 29:59She knows when she takes the seeds of
- 30:01the underworld into her body that she
- 30:03[music] is choosing to belong to both
- 30:04worlds.
- 30:06That she will not be able to return to
- 30:07the upper world unchanged or unbound.
- 30:11That she is claiming a relationship with
- 30:12the underground [music] that will define
- 30:14the rest of her existence.
- 30:17Young read this as the pivotal
- 30:19psychological act of [music] the
- 30:20feminine descent.
- 30:22Because you can go through the
- 30:23underworld without integrating it.
- 30:25>> [music]
- 30:25>> You can survive the losses, endure the
- 30:27darkness, endure the years of
- 30:29disorientations and double living
- 30:32>> [music]
- 30:32>> and come out the other side having
- 30:33refused to take in what the underground
- 30:35was offering.
- 30:37Having refused the pomegranate.
- 30:39The women who refused [music] the
- 30:41pomegranate return to the upper world
- 30:43determined to pretend the descent did
- 30:45not happen.
- 30:47They rebuild the core identity as
- 30:49faithfully as possible. They speak
- 30:51[music] of what they went through in the
- 30:52past tense with resolution, with the
- 30:54implication that it is behind them.
- 30:57They avoid [music] the people and
- 30:58conversations and questions that would
- 31:00bring them back into contact with what
- 31:02they survived.
- 31:04This strategy is understandable.
- 31:06It is also a second loss.
- 31:09The first loss was the descent. The
- 31:11second is refusing the gift the [music]
- 31:12descent was carrying.
- 31:14The pomegranate seeds are the
- 31:16willingness to say this was real. I was
- 31:18there. It changed [music] something
- 31:20permanent in me.
- 31:22And I am not going to pretend otherwise
- 31:23to make other people comfortable with
- 31:25who I am.
- 31:26To eat the pomegranate is to claim the
- 31:28underground as part of your history.
- 31:31Not your wound, [music] not your
- 31:32identity, but your history.
- 31:34Part of the full account of how you
- 31:36became who you are.
- 31:38This claiming is what makes the ascent
- 31:40possible. [music]
- 31:41Not the ascent out of the dark.
- 31:44The ascent [music] as Persephone rather
- 31:46than as a resurrected core. The myth
- 31:48includes a figure who is often
- 31:49overlooked in casual retellings, Hecate.
- 31:53While Persephone was underground and
- 31:55while Demeter searched the earth in her
- 31:57grief, [music]
- 31:58Hecate was the one who had heard the
- 31:59abduction.
- 32:01She held the knowledge of what happened.
- 32:03She accompanied Persephone through the
- 32:05underworld.
- 32:06And when the time came for the return,
- 32:08>> [music]
- 32:08>> it was Hecate who walked with Persephone
- 32:10out of the dark and into the light.
- 32:13In Jungian psychology, Hecate represents
- 32:15the witness.
- 32:17Every woman in the Persephone descent
- 32:19needs a Hecate.
- 32:21Someone [music] or something that has
- 32:23the capacity to hold what is happening
- 32:24without flinching.
- 32:26To be present in the dark without trying
- 32:28to prematurely pull the woman into the
- 32:30light.
- 32:31To say, "I see what is happening to you.
- 32:33I will not minimize it.
- 32:35>> [music]
- 32:35>> I will not tell you it should be over
- 32:36yet. I will simply stay with you while
- 32:38you are in it."
- 32:41The Hecate figure can be a therapist,
- 32:42[music] a friend, a mentor,
- 32:45a real human being who has themselves
- 32:46[music] been underground
- 32:48and who therefore does not need to
- 32:50protect themselves from what you are
- 32:51carrying.
- 32:53But Hecate can also be a practice,
- 32:56a journal, a creative outlet, [music]
- 32:58a contemplative tradition that has
- 33:00learned to be comfortable in darkness.
- 33:03A relationship with your own inner
- 33:04wisdom that develops precisely in the
- 33:06underground conditions.
- 33:08What Hecate is not is a rescuer. She
- 33:10does not try to bring Persephone up
- 33:12before Persephone [music] is ready.
- 33:15She does not treat the descent as a
- 33:16problem to be solved.
- 33:18She treats it as a process to be
- 33:20accompanied. [music]
- 33:21Finding your Hecate is not optional for
- 33:23a conscious descent.
- 33:25She is the element [music] that makes
- 33:27the difference between transformation
- 33:29and merely surviving.
- 33:31The myth says that when Persephone
- 33:32returns to the upper world [music] each
- 33:33year, the earth blooms.
- 33:35Demeter reunited with her daughter
- 33:37restores the harvest. The flowers
- 33:39[music] return.
- 33:40But the myth also says something
- 33:41subtler.
- 33:43Persephone does not remain in the upper
- 33:45world. She returns to the underworld for
- 33:47part of each year. [music]
- 33:49This is not a punishment extended.
- 33:51It is her nature now.
- 33:53She belongs to both worlds. She rules in
- 33:55both. And this is what Young saw as the
- 33:58central psychological truth of the
- 33:59Persephone arc.
- 34:01The woman who has integrated her descent
- 34:03does not return to the upper world as
- 34:05someone who has left the underground
- 34:07behind.
- 34:08She returns as someone who carries the
- 34:10underground within her.
- 34:12She does not leave the dark. She learns
- 34:14to move between the worlds.
- 34:17This movement between worlds is what
- 34:19makes her [music] so distinct from the
- 34:20Kore.
- 34:21The Kore knows only light.
- 34:23The returned Persephone [music] knows
- 34:25both.
- 34:26She can inhabit the ordinary functional
- 34:28relational upper world. She can work and
- 34:31love and create and belong.
- 34:33And she can also descend at will into
- 34:36the depths of herself
- 34:37>> [music]
- 34:37>> and of any situation.
- 34:40Into the place where most people cannot
- 34:42or will not go.
- 34:44This double citizenship is the nature of
- 34:45her authority.
- 34:46>> [music]
- 34:47>> When she is with someone who is
- 34:48grieving, she does not stay in the upper
- 34:50world with them trying to cheer them up,
- 34:53to move them toward the light as quickly
- 34:54as possible, to resolve their suffering
- 34:57with comfort and reassurance.
- 34:59She goes underground with them. She
- 35:01meets them where they are.
- 35:03She is not afraid of where they are
- 35:05because she has been there herself.
- 35:07When she is facing a situation that
- 35:09requires clear sight without sentiment,
- 35:11[music]
- 35:11she can see into it without flinching.
- 35:14The underworld trained her to see in the
- 35:16dark.
- 35:17That faculty does not disappear when she
- 35:19returns to the light.
- 35:22The ascent then is not a departure from
- 35:24the underworld. It is the mastery of it.
- 35:26>> [music]
- 35:27>> The ability to move between the worlds
- 35:28without being swallowed by either one.
- 35:31That is the queen. [music]
- 35:32And that is what you are becoming. There
- 35:34is a moment in the descent when the
- 35:36frame shifts.
- 35:37It does not happen all at once. It does
- 35:39not arrive like a revelation with light
- 35:41[music] and certainty. It arrives slowly
- 35:44the way dawn arrives. First as a barely
- 35:46perceptible lightening, then as warmth
- 35:48without visible source, [music]
- 35:50then as actual light.
- 35:53The moment is this.
- 35:54You begin to understand that what you
- 35:56went through was not done to you by
- 35:57malevolent chance.
- 35:59That the losses, the darkness, the
- 36:02stripping away of everything you thought
- 36:03you were,
- 36:05it was done [music] for you
- 36:07by a part of your own psyche that
- 36:08understood something your conscious self
- 36:10did not.
- 36:12And the thing it understood [music]
- 36:13was this.
- 36:14The Kore you were was too small for the
- 36:16life you were capable of living.
- 36:19The relationships you were in could not
- 36:21expand to hold who you were becoming.
- 36:24The roles you were playing had reached
- 36:25the [music] limits of what they could
- 36:27teach.
- 36:28The identity you had built was genuinely
- 36:30beautiful,
- 36:32genuinely yours,
- 36:33>> [music]
- 36:33>> and genuinely insufficient.
- 36:36The underground did not take these
- 36:37things to punish [music] you.
- 36:39It took them because you had outgrown
- 36:41them and could not have let them go
- 36:43voluntarily.
- 36:44You did not know at 30 or 32 or 40 that
- 36:47the relationship that was dissolving
- 36:49[music] had taken you as far as it
- 36:51could. You did not know that the version
- 36:53of yourself organized around a
- 36:54particular role was preventing a deeper
- 36:56self from [music] developing.
- 36:58You did not know that the life you had
- 37:00carefully constructed was a chrysalis
- 37:02rather than a destination.
- 37:05The underground knew.
- 37:07And it took what it needed to take
- 37:08[music] to give you what you could not
- 37:10give yourself.
- 37:11The experience of having nothing to hide
- 37:13behind.
- 37:15Of meeting yourself without the costume
- 37:16of [music] the Kore.
- 37:18Of discovering
- 37:19in that stripped and terrifying
- 37:21encounter that you were still there.
- 37:23That there was a [music] you beneath the
- 37:25roles and the agreeableness and the
- 37:27performance of goodness.
- 37:29A you that was older than all of it.
- 37:31>> [music]
- 37:31>> A you that the losses could not reach.
- 37:34That discovery of an indestructible core
- 37:37beneath [music] all the identities that
- 37:38died is the heart of what the underworld
- 37:40gives.
- 37:42The Greeks named it well.
- 37:43Persephone does not just survive the
- 37:45underground. [music] She rules it.
- 37:48She becomes the queen of the very realm
- 37:49that swallowed her.
- 37:51The thing that seemed to take everything
- 37:53from her becomes the domain [music] she
- 37:55governs.
- 37:56This is not metaphor.
- 37:58This is the precise psychological
- 38:00reality of what happens when a woman
- 38:02integrates [music] her descent. The very
- 38:04capacity for darkness that the losses
- 38:06opened in her.
- 38:08The ability [music] to see into the
- 38:09depths of things. To be present with
- 38:12what is real rather than what is
- 38:13comfortable.
- 38:15To hold the weight of other people's
- 38:16underground experiences [music]
- 38:18becomes her authority.
- 38:20If something in this is landing
- 38:22differently than you expected,
- 38:24if you are beginning to understand the
- 38:26descent you survived as something other
- 38:27than only a wound,
- 38:30a like takes 2 seconds and puts this in
- 38:32front of someone else who has been
- 38:34underground and has not yet understood
- 38:36what it was doing for them.
- 38:38There is a paradox at the center of the
- 38:40Persephone archetype that most
- 38:41treatments of it skip over.
- 38:44Persephone is queen of the dead.
- 38:46She rules a kingdom that no living
- 38:48person chooses to [music] enter. She
- 38:50governs a realm that the entire upper
- 38:52world fears, avoids, and speaks of only
- 38:54in whispers.
- 38:56And she is also the one who brings
- 38:57spring.
- 38:59Her return to the upper world is what
- 39:00makes the [music] earth bloom.
- 39:02Demeter's grief during Persephone's
- 39:04absence is what creates winter.
- 39:07The harvest, [music]
- 39:08the flowers, the fertility of the upper
- 39:10world,
- 39:11all of it depends on the queen of the
- 39:13underworld's willingness to come back
- 39:15up.
- 39:16Young read this as one of the most
- 39:18important statements in all of ancient
- 39:20mythology about the relationship between
- 39:22depth [music] and vitality.
- 39:24The world that exists only in the upper
- 39:26register, only in the light, only in the
- 39:29productive, the pleasant, the
- 39:30functional,
- 39:32withers without access to the
- 39:33underground.
- 39:35The culture that cannot look [music] at
- 39:36death, cannot sit with grief, cannot
- 39:39acknowledge the dark dimensions of human
- 39:41experience,
- 39:42becomes Demeter in winter, productive
- 39:44machinery grinding to a halt, the
- 39:46harvest [music] failing, the surface
- 39:48world losing its capacity to sustain
- 39:50life.
- 39:52What restores [music] it is the queen of
- 39:54the underworld, the woman who has been
- 39:55below and returned.
- 39:57This is the paradox. The most
- 39:59life-giving force in the upper world is
- 40:01someone who belongs to the underworld.
- 40:04The woman whose experience of depth, of
- 40:06darkness, of loss and survival makes her
- 40:09seem to the casual observer darker or
- 40:12heavier or more serious than the Kore.
- 40:15She is the one who actually makes the
- 40:16spring [music] possible.
- 40:18The women you know who have been through
- 40:20something real,
- 40:21who carry that gravity in their eyes,
- 40:23who are not easily rattled, who [music]
- 40:25can be present in difficult
- 40:26conversations in a way that others
- 40:28cannot,
- 40:30they are doing something for the world
- 40:31that goes completely unrecognized
- 40:32[music]
- 40:33because the world loves the Kore.
- 40:36The world is comfortable with the maiden
- 40:38and her flowers and [music] her spring.
- 40:40The world needs Persephone. It just does
- 40:43not know how to acknowledge that need,
- 40:45but you know it.
- 40:46If you have been underground, you know
- 40:48what it means to carry the weight of
- 40:49both worlds, to be someone who makes
- 40:52spring possible precisely because you
- 40:54have survived winter.
- 40:56The queen's paradox is this,
- 40:59her darkness is her gift, not despite
- 41:01what she has been [music] through,
- 41:03because of it. The underworld that
- 41:05called you was not random.
- 41:07The losses that broke open your [music]
- 41:08particular Kore identity were precisely
- 41:11configured to break open that particular
- 41:13identity and no other.
- 41:15This is the element of the Persephone
- 41:16myth that most psychological readings
- 41:18skip over.
- 41:19>> [music]
- 41:19>> They describe the descent in generic
- 41:21terms, loss, darkness, transformation.
- 41:23[music]
- 41:25But the myth is specific. Persephone
- 41:27descends into Hades' particular domain.
- 41:30She [music] eats his particular seeds.
- 41:32She becomes queen of his particular
- 41:34kingdom.
- 41:35What does your underworld [music]
- 41:36contain?
- 41:38The losses that disassembled your Kore
- 41:39identity reveal in negative space
- 41:42exactly what the Kore was built around.
- 41:44[music]
- 41:45If the descent took your primary
- 41:46relationship, the Kore was organized
- 41:49around being in that relationship.
- 41:52If it took your career, the Kore was
- 41:53organized around that role.
- 41:56If it took your health, the Kore was
- 41:57organized around the performance of
- 41:59capability. [music]
- 42:00If it took your spiritual framework, the
- 42:02Kore was organized around the certainty
- 42:04that framework provided. [music]
- 42:06And what you are being called to
- 42:08develop, what the underground is trying
- 42:09to produce, is [music] always the direct
- 42:11opposite of what was taken.
- 42:15The woman whose Kore was organized
- 42:16around being needed develops [music] in
- 42:18the underground the capacity to be
- 42:20complete without being needed.
- 42:23The woman whose Kore was organized
- 42:25around intellectual certainty develops
- 42:27in the underground the capacity to live
- 42:30with deep uncertainty [music] without
- 42:32being undone by it.
- 42:34The woman whose Kore was organized
- 42:36around her beauty or her [music] youth
- 42:38develops in the underground the
- 42:40authority that has nothing to do with
- 42:41appearance.
- 42:43The underground is not generic. It is
- 42:45customized. [music]
- 42:47It takes exactly what needs to be taken
- 42:48and produces exactly what needs to be
- 42:50produced.
- 42:52And this means that the specific shape
- 42:54of your hell, the specific losses that
- 42:56broke you open, the specific dark spaces
- 42:59you were forced to inhabit, [music]
- 43:01contains information about who you are
- 43:03becoming that is available nowhere else.
- 43:06You do not [music] have to feel grateful
- 43:07for what happened to you.
- 43:09Gratitude is not the point and is not
- 43:11required.
- 43:12What is possible, what becomes possible
- 43:14on the other side of the integration,
- 43:16>> [music]
- 43:16>> is something more nuanced than
- 43:17gratitude.
- 43:19It is recognition.
- 43:20The recognition that there was a logic
- 43:22to what you [music] went through.
- 43:24That your particular underworld was
- 43:26designed not by malevolence or random
- 43:28chance,
- 43:30but by the specific requirements of the
- 43:32specific queen you were in the process
- 43:34of becoming.
- 43:36That recognition does not undo the pain.
- 43:38Nothing undoes the pain,
- 43:41but it changes the meaning of the pain.
- 43:43And changed meaning changes everything
- 43:45about how you carry it
- 43:47>> [music]
- 43:47>> because you stop carrying it as evidence
- 43:49of how badly life went, and you start
- 43:51carrying it as the specific [music]
- 43:53education that made you capable of
- 43:55exactly what you are now capable of. If
- 43:57you are currently in the descent,
- 43:59>> [music]
- 43:59>> in the rupture, or the disorientation,
- 44:02or the long underground dwelling,
- 44:04the first and most important thing is to
- 44:06stop [music] fighting the direction.
- 44:09Not because fighting is wrong, but
- 44:11because fighting the descent does not
- 44:12work and costs enormous energy that
- 44:14[music] is needed for the actual work of
- 44:16the underground.
- 44:18The descent will not be argued with.
- 44:21It will not be managed [music] back into
- 44:22the upper world through willpower or
- 44:24optimism or enough self-improvement.
- 44:27It moves on its own timetable, toward
- 44:29its own destination, using [music] its
- 44:31own methods.
- 44:33What you can do, the only thing that
- 44:35actually helps, is [music] enter it
- 44:36consciously rather than being dragged
- 44:39through it unconsciously.
- 44:41Entering consciously means recognizing
- 44:44what phase you are [music] in.
- 44:46It means being willing to name the
- 44:47experience accurately, not to yourself
- 44:49[music] only, but in whatever private
- 44:50space you have available.
- 44:53Not, "I'm having a hard time."
- 44:55but, "I am in the Persephone descent. My
- 44:57Kore identity is dying.
- 44:59What is being built in the dark is not
- 45:00yet visible.
- 45:01>> [music]
- 45:01>> I am in the process, and the process is
- 45:03taking its time."
- 45:05That naming changes your relationship to
- 45:07the experience without changing the
- 45:09experience itself.
- 45:12The second part of conscious entry is
- 45:13permission.
- 45:15Giving yourself [music] permission,
- 45:16real, unconditional permission to be
- 45:18underground.
- 45:20Not to perform recovery faster than is
- 45:22authentic. [music]
- 45:24Not to reassure the people around you
- 45:25that you are fine before you are fine.
- 45:28Not to rebuild the Kore-shaped life
- 45:29while the queen is still being forged.
- 45:32This permission is harder than it
- 45:34sounds.
- 45:35The upper world, [music]
- 45:36the people, the social expectations, the
- 45:39internalized norms about what a
- 45:40functional adult woman looks like,
- 45:43creates constant pressure to surface
- 45:45before the underground work is complete.
- 45:47To stop grieving on schedule.
- 45:49>> [music]
- 45:50>> To move on at a pace that is comfortable
- 45:52for observers.
- 45:53Resisting that pressure, creating the
- 45:55protected space [music] that the
- 45:56underground work requires, this is the
- 45:59first practice, and it is unglamorous
- 46:01and invisible and absolutely necessary.
- 46:04[music] The pomegranate practice is
- 46:05this,
- 46:06choose deliberately and consciously
- 46:09>> [music]
- 46:09>> to integrate something from the descent
- 46:11that you have been trying to leave
- 46:12behind.
- 46:14This sounds simple
- 46:16and is among the [music] most difficult
- 46:17things a person can do.
- 46:19Here's how it works.
- 46:20Identify one experience, one insight,
- 46:23[music] one change in yourself that
- 46:25emerged from the underground,
- 46:27and that you have been treating as
- 46:28evidence of damage rather than as
- 46:30[music] a gift of the descent. Maybe it
- 46:32is the fact that you can no longer
- 46:33perform enthusiasm you do not feel.
- 46:35[music]
- 46:36You used to be able to be cheerful and
- 46:38bright and engaged on command. Now you
- 46:41cannot.
- 46:42The underground took that performance
- 46:43from you,
- 46:45and you have been experiencing the loss
- 46:46of it as a wound.
- 46:48The pomegranate practice asks you to
- 46:50turn toward it and say, "This is
- 46:52accurate. I am more honest now than I
- 46:54was.
- 46:55The inability to perform what I do not
- 46:57feel [music] is not a limitation.
- 47:00It is the beginning of integrity."
- 47:02Maybe it is the solitude.
- 47:04The underworld has made you someone who
- 47:05needs more silence and space than you
- 47:07used [music] to need.
- 47:08You have been experiencing this as
- 47:10isolation, as something wrong with you.
- 47:12The pomegranate practice, "This is
- 47:14accurate. I have become someone who
- 47:16requires depth in the relationships I
- 47:18invest in.
- 47:20The quantity of connections I used to
- 47:21maintain
- 47:22>> [music]
- 47:22>> was not sustainable with the person I'm
- 47:25becoming.
- 47:26I am not broken.
- 47:28I am more specific."
- 47:30The pomegranate practice does not
- 47:32require that you perform gratitude for
- 47:34what you went [music] through. It
- 47:35requires only that you acknowledge one
- 47:37real thing the underground has given
- 47:39you,
- 47:40and claim [music] it explicitly as
- 47:41yours.
- 47:43Each claiming is an act of integration.
- 47:46Each integration strengthens the
- 47:47underground registration, the queen's
- 47:49presence [music] relative to the surface
- 47:51registration, the Kore's remnants. Over
- 47:54time, the claims [music] accumulate. The
- 47:56queen becomes more present. The
- 47:58pomegranate is eaten seed by seed. The
- 48:01third practice is [music] finding your
- 48:02Hecate and being honest with her about
- 48:04where you are.
- 48:06Most women in the descent are in the
- 48:08habit of protecting the people around
- 48:09them from the full weight of what is
- 48:11[music] happening.
- 48:13They offer the upper world version of
- 48:14the story, the manageable one,
- 48:17>> [music]
- 48:17>> the one that has a clear arc, the one
- 48:19that reassures the listener that
- 48:21everything is going [music] to be fine.
- 48:23This protection is kind.
- 48:25It is also isolating.
- 48:27And it prevents the Hecate relationship
- 48:30from forming because Hecate cannot
- 48:32accompany [music] you into the
- 48:33underground if you do not let her know
- 48:35that is where you are.
- 48:37Finding your [music] Hecate begins with
- 48:39an honest assessment of who in your life
- 48:41can hold what you are actually carrying.
- 48:44Not who wants to help.
- 48:46Many people want to help,
- 48:47and the quality of the wanting is
- 48:49genuine,
- 48:50but who can actually hold it?
- 48:52Who does not need you to be okay [music]
- 48:54for their own equilibrium to remain
- 48:56intact?
- 48:57Who will not try to pull you out before
- 48:59you are [music] ready, or minimize the
- 49:01underground to make themselves more
- 49:03comfortable?
- 49:04That person, [music] and you may have to
- 49:06look carefully, and there may only be
- 49:07one, and that is enough,
- 49:09is your Hecate [music] candidate.
- 49:12Going to her is not about unloading.
- 49:14It is not about processing verbally
- 49:16everything that is happening.
- 49:18Often the most [music] important thing
- 49:19Hecate provides is not analysis or
- 49:22advice or even words.
- 49:24It is presence. The specific quality of
- 49:27being with someone who is not afraid of
- 49:28where you are. Tell her,
- 49:31"I am underground right now. I am in a
- 49:33descent I do not fully understand.
- 49:36I am not sure how long it's going to
- 49:38take. [music] I do not need you to fix
- 49:39it. I need you to know about it.
- 49:42That telling [music] is the beginning of
- 49:43the Hecate relationship.
- 49:46And the Hecate relationship is what
- 49:47makes the difference [music] between a
- 49:49descent that transforms and a descent
- 49:51that merely wounds.
- 49:53The fourth practice is learning to
- 49:55recognize when the ascent has begun
- 49:56[music]
- 49:57because the ascent does not arrive as a
- 49:59dramatic lightning. It does not announce
- 50:01itself.
- 50:02It arrives gradually in the same way the
- 50:04descent arrived [music] as a shift in
- 50:06what feels possible, in what pulls your
- 50:09attention, in what your energy reaches
- 50:11toward.
- 50:12The first sign of ascent is curiosity
- 50:14returning.
- 50:16Not enthusiasm, not motivation, not the
- 50:19forward momentum of the upper world,
- 50:21just a small quiet curiosity about
- 50:23something. A question that does not feel
- 50:25like desperation.
- 50:27An interest in something that does not
- 50:29carry the weight of performance.
- 50:31If you have been underground long
- 50:33enough, curiosity will feel unfamiliar
- 50:35when it returns.
- 50:37You may not even recognize it at first.
- 50:39You may experience [music] it as
- 50:40distraction or restlessness.
- 50:43But pay attention to the quality of it.
- 50:45It is different from [music] the
- 50:46underground's relentless inward pull.
- 50:49It reaches outward, however slightly.
- 50:52The second sign is the willingness to be
- 50:53seen again.
- 50:55The underground creates a powerful need
- 50:57for invisibility, for the protective
- 50:59darkness of not being perceived or
- 51:01assessed
- 51:02>> [music]
- 51:02>> or engaged with.
- 51:04As the ascent begins, this need loosens
- 51:06slightly.
- 51:07You begin to tolerate and eventually to
- 51:09want the experience of being in contact
- 51:11with the world again.
- 51:13This wanting is not a return to the
- 51:14Kore's [music] need for approval.
- 51:17It has a different quality.
- 51:18The queen who is beginning to ascend
- 51:20wants contact,
- 51:21>> [music]
- 51:21>> but selective contact.
- 51:24Real contact. She is not available to
- 51:26everyone and she knows it.
- 51:28But she is beginning to want the
- 51:29specific connections that can hold who
- 51:31she is now.
- 51:33The third sign is the capacity to
- 51:35receive the underground's gift.
- 51:37The pomegranate begins to taste like
- 51:39[music] something you chose rather than
- 51:41something you survived.
- 51:43The losses that took the Kore look
- 51:45different from the other side of the
- 51:46descent.
- 51:48You begin to see their necessity without
- 51:50needing to perform gratitude [music] for
- 51:51it. When you notice these signs, even
- 51:54faintly, even in one moment of one day,
- 51:57that is Persephone [music] beginning her
- 51:58ascent. At the beginning of this, there
- 52:01was a question left unresolved. A woman
- 52:04who had been through something she could
- 52:05not fully explain.
- 52:07A season of descent
- 52:08>> [music]
- 52:09>> that had no clear map, no clear
- 52:10destination, no clear reason.
- 52:13She said she was fine when people asked
- 52:16>> [music]
- 52:16>> because how do you describe the
- 52:17underworld to someone who has never been
- 52:18called there?
- 52:20But she is here now.
- 52:22And she is not saying fine. She is
- 52:23saying this is accurate.
- 52:25I was there. The losses that took my
- 52:27Kore identity were precisely the losses
- 52:29that needed to happen. [music]
- 52:32The darkness that I lived inside was
- 52:34doing something I could not have
- 52:35consented to if I had understood what it
- 52:37required.
- 52:39And what it required was everything.
- 52:41It required the relationship built
- 52:43around the [music] maiden's need to be
- 52:44needed.
- 52:46It required the version of herself
- 52:47organized around being understood and
- 52:50approved of.
- 52:52It required the certainty about who she
- 52:53was and what her life was supposed to
- 52:55look [music] like.
- 52:56It required all of it.
- 52:58And in exchange, it gave her something
- 53:00that has no equivalent in the upper
- 53:02[music] world. Something that cannot be
- 53:03acquired through success or spiritual
- 53:05practice or therapy or genuine love,
- 53:07[music]
- 53:08though all of those things have their
- 53:10value.
- 53:11It gave her the capacity to rule.
- 53:14Not rule in the sense of control.
- 53:16Not rule in the sense of dominance
- 53:18[music] or hierarchy.
- 53:20Rule in the sense that Persephone rules
- 53:23with the authority of someone who has
- 53:24faced the absolute and is no longer
- 53:26[music] afraid of it.
- 53:28Who knows what survives the loss of
- 53:30everything?
- 53:31Who can be with another person in
- 53:33[music] the darkest version of their
- 53:34experience and not flinch, not manage,
- 53:38not try to bring them to the light
- 53:39before they are ready?
- 53:41The throne of the underworld is not a
- 53:43comfortable place to sit.
- 53:45It is cold and dark and the company
- 53:47[music] it keeps is the company of loss
- 53:49and grief
- 53:50and the things that the upper world
- 53:51cannot face.
- 53:53But it is real. [music]
- 53:54It is more real than the meadow was.
- 53:57And the woman who has earned it through
- 53:58the specific education of her specific
- 54:01descent carries an authority that the
- 54:03world recognizes even when it cannot
- 54:05name what it [music] is recognizing.
- 54:08You are that woman.
- 54:09Not in the future tense. Not when the
- 54:11work is complete.
- 54:12>> [music]
- 54:13>> Not when the ascent is fully
- 54:14accomplished.
- 54:15Right now.
- 54:17The descent you have survived has
- 54:18already given you the materials of the
- 54:20throne.
- 54:22The question is only whether you are
- 54:23willing to sit in it.
- 54:25To claim the authority that the
- 54:26underground forged in you [music] rather
- 54:28than continuing to apologize for not
- 54:30being the Kore anymore.
- 54:32The throne was never taken from you.
- 54:35It was always being [music] built for
- 54:36you underground from the exact substance
- 54:39of everything you lost.
- 54:41In the myth, Persephone returns to the
- 54:43upper world each year. She does not
- 54:45stay. She does not pretend the
- 54:47underground was a dream.
- 54:49She carries it with her in her bearing,
- 54:52in her knowledge, [music] in the
- 54:53specific gravity that distinguishes her
- 54:55from every other goddess who has never
- 54:57been below.
- 54:58And the earth [music] responds to her
- 55:00return with flowering.
- 55:03Young read this as the myth's final and
- 55:05most important teaching. The depth that
- 55:07the feminine develops through the
- 55:08descent is not for [music] the descended
- 55:10woman alone.
- 55:12It is for the world she returns to.
- 55:15The woman who has integrated her
- 55:16Persephone descent becomes a particular
- 55:19kind of presence in the upper world.
- 55:21She can see into what is real in a
- 55:23situation when others are still managing
- 55:25the surface.
- 55:27She can be with another person's grief
- 55:28or fear or confusion without needing to
- 55:31resolve it on their behalf.
- 55:33She can speak truth without cruelty
- 55:36because she has been in the truth
- 55:37kingdom long enough to understand its
- 55:39actual nature.
- 55:41She becomes in effect a guide to the
- 55:43underworld for others.
- 55:45Not in a formal sense. Not by claiming
- 55:48any title or role. [music]
- 55:50But through the quality of her presence.
- 55:52The willingness to go underground with
- 55:54someone rather than trying to pull them
- 55:55up prematurely.
- 55:57The capacity to hold what is real
- 55:59without flinching. The authority that
- 56:01says, [music]
- 56:02"I have been where you are.
- 56:04I know what it is. And I also know that
- 56:06there is something on the other side."
- 56:09This is the function that the world
- 56:10needs from Persephone and does not know
- 56:13to ask for.
- 56:15The culture loves the Kore. It rewards
- 56:17her brightness and her agreeableness
- 56:19[music] and her willingness to make
- 56:20everything easier.
- 56:22It celebrates the woman who blooms and
- 56:24comforts and produces.
- 56:26But it needs the woman who can go
- 56:27underground, who can remain present in
- 56:30the dark,
- 56:31who knows that spring is not a return to
- 56:33what was, but an integration of
- 56:35everything that winter taught.
- 56:37The woman who has eaten the pomegranate
- 56:39seeds,
- 56:40who has claimed her relationship with
- 56:42the underground, does not bring spring
- 56:44by performing brightness.
- 56:46She brings it by carrying both worlds
- 56:48[music] simultaneously.
- 56:49By being the evidence that it is
- 56:51possible to have been below and
- 56:53returned.
- 56:54To have lost everything [music] and
- 56:56become more.
- 56:57To have been stripped of the Kore and
- 56:59discovered the queen.
- 57:01That evidence [music] matters more than
- 57:02most people realize.
- 57:05In a world that is profoundly afraid of
- 57:06darkness, the woman who [music] has been
- 57:08there and come back is one of the most
- 57:10important figures available.
- 57:12Not because she has the answers, but
- 57:14because [music] she has the experience.
- 57:17An experience of the underground, real,
- 57:19embodied, integrated experience
- 57:21>> [music]
- 57:21>> is the only thing that reliably guides
- 57:23another person through it.
- 57:25You are Persephone. [music]
- 57:27You always were.
- 57:29The descent was not what made you her.
- 57:31The descent was what you had to go
- 57:32through to find her.
- 57:34And now that you have, the spring that
- 57:36comes from you is not the spring of the
- 57:38[music] meadow, light and beautiful and
- 57:40temporary.
- 57:42It is the spring that knows what winter
- 57:44was.
- 57:45And that knowledge makes it the only
- 57:47spring [music] that lasts. Subscribe if
- 57:49you want to keep going into this.
- 57:51There is more depth waiting.
- 57:53You were never just Kore.
- 57:55You were always also the queen.
- 57:58Thank you for being [music] here. I will
- 57:59see you in the next one.
