the only marketing strategies you need for selling digital products — Transcript

- 0:00One of the biggest lessons I've learned
- 0:01after selling over $400,000 worth of
- 0:03digital products is that creating the
- 0:05product is only half the battle. The
- 0:07other half is marketing it, and that's
- 0:09exactly what we're going to be talking
- 0:10about today. I'll walk you through the
- 0:12seven marketing strategies that I
- 0:14believe every digital product seller
- 0:15should know.
- 0:18When most people hear the word
- 0:19marketing, they immediately think of
- 0:21posting on social media or running ads.
- 0:23And while those are definitely forms of
- 0:25marketing, marketing is actually much
- 0:27bigger than that. At its core, marketing
- 0:29is simply the process of helping the
- 0:30right people discover your product,
- 0:32trust your product, and ultimately
- 0:34decide to buy your product. And when
- 0:36you're selling digital products, every
- 0:37single thing that helps move someone
- 0:39from I've never heard of this to I'm
- 0:40clicking buy is part of your marketing.
- 0:43And that includes so many different
- 0:44strategies, all of which we'll be
- 0:46talking about in today's video.
- 0:49The first marketing strategy is SEO,
- 0:51which stands for search engine
- 0:52optimization. In simple terms, SEO is
- 0:55the process of optimizing your product
- 0:56so that it appears when people search
- 0:58for it. If you're an Etsy seller, this
- 1:00means showing up in Etsy search results
- 1:02when someone types in keywords related
- 1:04to your product. If you sell on your own
- 1:06website, the same concept applies to
- 1:08Google and other search engines. So, how
- 1:10do you actually improve your SEO? One of
- 1:12the easiest ways is to look at the
- 1:14top-performing listings in your niche
- 1:16and pay attention to the keywords that
- 1:17keep showing up. If you notice the same
- 1:19words appearing across multiple
- 1:21successful listings, that's usually a
- 1:23good indication that those are the terms
- 1:24customers are searching for. Naturally
- 1:26incorporate those keywords throughout
- 1:28your title, tags, categories, and
- 1:30product description. Another option is
- 1:32to use AI tools like ChatGPT or Google
- 1:34Gemini. You can ask them to generate
- 1:36keyword ideas for your product, then
- 1:38filter through the suggestions and
- 1:40choose the ones that best match what
- 1:41you're selling. The goal is to use
- 1:43keywords that accurately describe your
- 1:44product while matching what your ideal
- 1:46customer is likely to type into the
- 1:48search bar.
- 1:50The next marketing strategy is your
- 1:51product photos. Your product photos are
- 1:53actually one of the biggest factors in
- 1:55whether someone clicks on your product
- 1:57in the first place. Think about it. When
- 1:59someone searches for a product on Etsy,
- 2:00they're scrolling through hundreds,
- 2:02sometimes thousands of listings. Your
- 2:05main product photo has one job: to stop
- 2:07the scroll and convince someone to
- 2:09click. I always say that creating a
- 2:10great digital product is one thing, but
- 2:12creating great product photos is
- 2:14another. Because no matter how good your
- 2:16product is, if nobody clicks on your
- 2:18listing, nobody's ever going to buy it.
- 2:20And unlike physical products, customers
- 2:22can't hold or inspect a digital product
- 2:24before purchasing. Your product photos
- 2:26are doing all the talking for you. They
- 2:28need to clearly communicate the value of
- 2:30your product by showing multiple preview
- 2:32images, highlighting what's included,
- 2:34demonstrating how it works or how it's
- 2:36edited, and making it easy for customers
- 2:38to understand exactly what they're
- 2:39getting. If you're ever unsure what
- 2:41makes a good product photo, take a look
- 2:42at the top sellers in your niche. Pay
- 2:44attention to how they present their
- 2:46products, the types of mockups they use,
- 2:48and the information they include in
- 2:49their preview images. You don't want to
- 2:51copy them, but you can absolutely use
- 2:53them as a guide to create listing photos
- 2:55that are just as clear and compelling.
- 2:59The next marketing strategy is email
- 3:00marketing. It's the process of reaching
- 3:02out to your customers through email. To
- 3:04do that, you'll first need to collect
- 3:05email addresses from people who are
- 3:07interested in your business so you can
- 3:09stay in touch with them over time.
- 3:10You've probably seen this before. Many
- 3:12businesses offer something like a free
- 3:14guide, a template, or even a discount
- 3:16code in exchange for your email address.
- 3:18When someone signs up, they're added to
- 3:20the business email list. From there, you
- 3:21can email them whenever you're launching
- 3:23a new product, running a sale, sharing
- 3:25helpful tips, or simply keeping them
- 3:27updated on what's happening in your
- 3:28business. One of the reasons email
- 3:30marketing is so powerful is because
- 3:32you're not relying entirely on an
- 3:34algorithm to reach your audience.
- 3:35Instead of hoping someone comes across
- 3:37your content on social media, you can
- 3:39communicate directly with people who
- 3:41have already shown interest in what you
- 3:43have to offer. I personally use email
- 3:45marketing in my own business, and I can
- 3:46confidently say it's been one of the
- 3:48most effective marketing strategies I've
- 3:50implemented.
- 3:52So, how do you actually get started with
- 3:54email marketing? One platform I
- 3:55recommend for this is Omnisend. First,
- 3:57sign up for Omnisend. They have a free
- 3:59plan which is a great way to start
- 4:00building your email list. Next, create a
- 4:02landing page or a sign-up form. This is
- 4:05where you'll offer something valuable in
- 4:06exchange for a visitor's email address.
- 4:08It could be a free template, a
- 4:10checklist, a guide, or even a discount
- 4:12code. Once someone signs up, they're
- 4:13automatically added to your email list.
- 4:15Now, the next step is to create an
- 4:17automation. An automation is simply a
- 4:19series of emails that get sent
- 4:20automatically whenever someone joins
- 4:22your email list. Instead of manually
- 4:24emailing every new subscriber, Omnisend
- 4:26does it for you behind the scenes. A
- 4:28simple welcome automation might start by
- 4:30delivering the freebie you promised,
- 4:32followed by a short introduction to your
- 4:33brand, a helpful tip or valuable
- 4:35resource, and finally an email
- 4:37introducing one of your products. The
- 4:39great thing is that once you've built
- 4:40this sequence, every new subscriber
- 4:42automatically receives it, so it's
- 4:44constantly working in the background.
- 4:46And that's just one type of automation.
- 4:48As your business grows, you can also set
- 4:49up things like abandoned cart emails to
- 4:51remind customers to complete their
- 4:53purchase, or browse abandonment emails
- 4:55that follow up with people who viewed
- 4:57your products but left without buying.
- 4:59These small automations can quietly work
- 5:01in the background, helping you recover
- 5:02sales that might have otherwise been
- 5:04lost. In fact, according to Omnisend,
- 5:06one in every three people who click on
- 5:08an automated email goes on to make a
- 5:10purchase. And businesses see an average
- 5:12return of $79 for every $1 spent on
- 5:15email marketing. That's why it's one of
- 5:16the highest ROI marketing channels
- 5:18available. Omnisend is also trusted by
- 5:20150,000 businesses worldwide, offers
- 5:2324/7 customer support, provides free
- 5:26migration in as little as 5 days if
- 5:28you're switching from another platform,
- 5:30and can help you save up to 35% after
- 5:32making the switch. If you'd like to
- 5:34start building your own email list, you
- 5:35can try Omnisend for free using the link
- 5:37in my description below. And if you
- 5:39decide to upgrade, you can use my code
- 5:41YALE to get 30% off your first 3 months
- 5:43on any paid plan.
- 5:45>> [music]
- 5:46>> The next marketing strategy is social
- 5:48proof. Social proof is the idea that
- 5:50people are more likely to trust and buy
- 5:51a product when they see that other
- 5:53people have already bought it and had a
- 5:55great experience. [music]
- 5:56It's the reason why so many of us check
- 5:58reviews before buying something online.
- 6:00For digital products, social proof can
- 6:01come in many forms such as positive
- 6:03reviews, photos of customers using your
- 6:05product, or even milestones like the
- 6:07number of sales you've made in your
- 6:08shop. If you're just getting started and
- 6:10don't have many reviews yet, don't
- 6:12worry, that's completely normal. Focus
- 6:13on creating a great product and
- 6:15providing excellent customer service and
- 6:17those reviews will naturally start
- 6:18trickling in over time. Another thing
- 6:20you can do is politely encourage
- 6:22customers to leave a review. I know some
- 6:24Etsy sellers personally message
- 6:25customers after they've purchased to
- 6:27thank them for their order and ask if
- 6:29they'd be willing to leave a review if
- 6:31they enjoyed the product. You can also
- 6:32include a short note or thank you card
- 6:34in your PDF delivery file letting
- 6:36customers know that you'd really
- 6:37appreciate a review if they found your
- 6:39product helpful.
- 6:41>> [music]
- 6:41>> The next marketing strategy is Pinterest
- 6:43marketing. Now, the great thing about
- 6:45Pinterest is that it's actually a search
- 6:47engine. People go to Pinterest to search
- 6:49for design inspiration and even digital
- 6:51products, which makes it an incredibly
- 6:53powerful platform for digital product
- 6:54sellers. I'm a huge advocate for
- 6:56Pinterest marketing because, first of
- 6:58all, it's completely free to use and
- 6:59I've seen firsthand how much it's helped
- 7:01drive traffic to my own Etsy shop. So,
- 7:03if you're not using Pinterest yet, I
- 7:05highly recommend adding it to your
- 7:06marketing strategy. I actually have a
- 7:08full tutorial about this, which I will
- 7:10link in the description box. Now, unlike
- 7:11Instagram or TikTok where a post might
- 7:13only get views for a day or two, a
- 7:15Pinterest pin can continue driving
- 7:16traffic to your products for months or
- 7:18even years. That means the work you put
- 7:20in today can continue bringing in
- 7:22potential customers long after you've
- 7:24posted it. To get started, create a
- 7:26Pinterest business account so you have
- 7:28access to analytics and other business
- 7:30features. Then, start creating pins for
- 7:32your digital products. I like to think
- 7:33of pins as little marketing posters for
- 7:36your products. They're designed to catch
- 7:38someone's attention and convince them to
- 7:40click. When you upload your pins, use
- 7:42clear titles and description with
- 7:43relevant keywords and make sure [music]
- 7:45each pin links directly to your Etsy
- 7:47listing or website. That way, if someone
- 7:49discovers your product on Pinterest,
- 7:51they can click straight through and
- 7:52purchase it. The more searchable,
- 7:54visually appealing, and helpful your
- 7:55pins are, the better chance they have of
- 7:57reaching people who are already looking
- 7:59for products like yours.
- 8:01The next marketing strategy is social
- 8:03media marketing. This includes platforms
- 8:05like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
- 8:07Now, I don't think this one needs much
- 8:09explaining because I'm sure you've come
- 8:11across creators on these platforms
- 8:12promoting their digital products. But,
- 8:14here's the thing. Social media marketing
- 8:16isn't as straightforward as you might
- 8:18think. It's not just about posting your
- 8:20products and expecting people to buy
- 8:21[music] them. The people I see having
- 8:23the most success selling digital
- 8:24products on social media aren't just
- 8:26promoting their products. They're
- 8:28building a brand. They're building
- 8:30trust, creating a community, and
- 8:31becoming someone people genuinely enjoy
- 8:34following. That means creating content
- 8:36that provides value. Share your story,
- 8:38show the behind the scenes of creating
- 8:40your products, teach your audience
- 8:41something, answer common questions, or
- 8:43give them tips they can actually use. As
- 8:46you continue providing value, people
- 8:47naturally become more interested in your
- 8:49business and are much more likely to
- 8:51check out what you're selling. Now, the
- 8:52type of content you create will depend
- 8:54on the platform you're using. On
- 8:56Instagram, you might post reels,
- 8:57carousels, stories, or behind-the-scenes
- 8:59content. [music] On TikTok, you could
- 9:01create short educational videos, design
- 9:03process videos, or quick tips. And on
- 9:05YouTube, you have the opportunity to
- 9:07create longer educational videos that
- 9:09help establish your expertise and build
- 9:11a deeper connection with your audience.
- 9:12No matter which platform you choose, the
- 9:14goal is the same. Create content that
- 9:16your ideal customer would genuinely
- 9:18enjoy watching and walk away learning
- 9:19something from. You know, I recently
- 9:21came across a reel that compared social
- 9:23media to an ATM, and I thought it was
- 9:24such a great analogy. You can't expect
- 9:26to keep withdrawing money if you've
- 9:28never made a deposit. The same applies
- 9:30to social media. Every helpful post,
- 9:32tutorial, tip, or story you share is a
- 9:35deposit into your brand. Over time,
- 9:37those deposits build trust, and that's
- 9:39what eventually leads to sales. So,
- 9:41instead of asking yourself, "How can I
- 9:43sell more today?" start asking, "How can
- 9:45I provide more value today?" Because
- 9:47when you consistently help people first,
- 9:49the sales often follow naturally.
- 9:52The final marketing strategy is paid
- 9:54advertising. Unlike the other marketing
- 9:56strategies we've talked about so far,
- 9:58paid advertising involves spending money
- 10:00to get more people to see your products.
- 10:02Let's start with Etsy Ads. If you're
- 10:03selling on Etsy, Etsy Ads are one of the
- 10:05easiest ways to get your products in
- 10:07front of more potential customers. What
- 10:09Etsy basically does is push your
- 10:11promoted listings higher up in the
- 10:12search results, giving them a chance to
- 10:14appear alongside some of the top sellers
- 10:16when customers are searching for
- 10:17products like yours. What I love about
- 10:19it is that they're very easy to set up.
- 10:21For the most part, you simply choose
- 10:23your budget, decide which listings you
- 10:24want to advertise, and Etsy handles the
- 10:26rest. That said, I personally only
- 10:28recommend running Etsy Ads on products
- 10:30you've already validated in some way.
- 10:32>> [music]
- 10:32>> Maybe they're already making sales
- 10:34organically, or maybe they're getting a
- 10:35lot of views and clicks. The reason is
- 10:37because ads don't fix a bad product. If
- 10:40people aren't interested in your product
- 10:42organically, running ads will usually
- 10:44just show it to even more people who
- 10:45also won't buy it. So, before investing
- 10:48in Etsy Ads, make sure you've already
- 10:49optimized your SEO, product photos, and
- 10:52listing. Once you've done that, Etsy Ads
- 10:54can be a great way to scale a product
- 10:55that's already performing well. I also
- 10:57have an entire video dedicated to Etsy
- 10:59Ads, where I walk you through exactly
- 11:00how I set them up and use them in my own
- 11:02shop, so I'll leave that link in the
- 11:03description below if you'd like to learn
- 11:05more. Now, if you're selling on your own
- 11:07website, you can also look into
- 11:08platforms like Meta Ads or Google Ads.
- 11:11These allow you to reach entirely new
- 11:12audiences outside of Etsy, but they also
- 11:14come with a much steeper learning curve.
- 11:16You'll need to learn things like
- 11:18audience targeting, ad creatives, and
- 11:20budgeting, so I generally recommend only
- 11:22exploring these once you've validated
- 11:24your products and have a better
- 11:25understanding of your customers. Bottom
- 11:27line, paid ads can absolutely accelerate
- 11:29your business, but I like to think of
- 11:31them as fuel, not magic. They can help
- 11:33scale a great product, but they won't
- 11:35fix a product that people don't already
- 11:37want to buy.
- 11:39Hopefully this video gave you a better
- 11:40understanding of what marketing actually
- 11:42is. At the end of the day, you don't
- 11:43have to implement every single strategy
- 11:46we talked about today. Even choosing one
- 11:47or two and doing them really well can
- 11:49make a huge difference in getting more
- 11:51eyes on your products and ultimately
- 11:53generating more sales. And if you'd like
- 11:55to start building your own email list,
- 11:56you can try Omnisend for free using the
- 11:58link in my description below. They have
- 12:00a free plan to help you get started, and
- 12:01if you decide to upgrade, you can use my
- 12:03code Yael to get 30% off your first 3
- 12:06months on any paid plan. Thank you so
- 12:07much for hanging out with me today. If
- 12:09you haven't subscribed yet, please do
- 12:10it. It really, really helps my channel,
- 12:12and I'll see you in the next video. Bye.
