  1. 0:00Right now, your room could be very close
  2. 0:02to extraordinary. Maybe you realize
  3. 0:04this. Extraordinary in how it compares
  4. 0:06to the unremarkable rooms we see so
  5. 0:09often. When aiming for change, most
  6. 0:11people try better furniture, moving
  7. 0:13things around, maybe new art. But the
  8. 0:15room still feels unimpressive. There's
  9. 0:18no presence, no gravity. The secret,
  10. 0:20it's not the furniture, it's the lack of
  11. 0:23contrast. If you're a returning
  12. 0:25subscriber, hit the thumbs up. If you're
  13. 0:27new here, hopefully by the end of this
  14. 0:28video, you'll be a subscriber. Remember
  15. 0:31that if you would like our help in
  16. 0:32designing your room, you can have that
  17. 0:34help by clicking the link in the
  18. 0:36description below. The one design move
  19. 0:39that instantly transforms a man's room
  20. 0:41isn't the addition of more things. It's
  21. 0:44the addition of definition. Contrast is
  22. 0:47what gives a room presence. But what is
  23. 0:50presence? It's rarely defined, often
  24. 0:53only understood through ambiguity, vague
  25. 0:55because of how we experience it, and
  26. 0:57that's through feeling. Mryiam Webster's
  27. 1:00dictionary defines the characteristic as
  28. 1:02having a stately or distinguished
  29. 1:05bearing, a noteworthy quality of poise
  30. 1:08and effectiveness, which I think is a
  31. 1:10good definition. Presence in design is
  32. 1:13the immediate sense of weight,
  33. 1:15character, and awareness in a room. It's
  34. 1:18sinthetic, like seeing the warmth of a
  35. 1:20sunrise, like good posture or a
  36. 1:23well-timed pause in conversation. It
  37. 1:25delivers an aura of composure and
  38. 1:28appreciable selectivity. Men's rooms
  39. 1:30often fail because of everything being
  40. 1:32one tone. Beige on beige, gray on gray,
  41. 1:35wood furniture that melts into the
  42. 1:37floor. By introducing a deeper tone or
  43. 1:40material, everything sharpens. Contrast
  44. 1:43is the fastest, most reliable way to
  45. 1:46help build presence. You can begin to
  46. 1:48accomplish this in one act. Darkening a
  47. 1:51major surface and anchoring it with rich
  48. 1:54texture. Edges become defined, dimension
  49. 1:57is apparent, and a sense of maturity is
  50. 2:00reached. This move thrives in areas like
  51. 2:02living rooms and studies where depth and
  52. 2:04warmth carry huge impact. But how can
  53. 2:07you tell if your room needs this? Try
  54. 2:10standing at the entry of your room. Take
  55. 2:12out your phone. Snap a photo. Does the
  56. 2:14photo look washed out, like everything
  57. 2:16is merging? Can you identify
  58. 2:18undisputably where the anchor of the
  59. 2:21room is? If your answer is yes to the
  60. 2:23former or no to the latter, your room is
  61. 2:27a candidate. One bold, darker element
  62. 2:29that commands the eye and balances the
  63. 2:32space should do it some good. If you
  64. 2:34choose, here are three ways that you can
  65. 2:36get started today. The first is the
  66. 2:39charcoal study wall. If your office
  67. 2:41already has built-in shelving, focus
  68. 2:43your attention there. If you don't,
  69. 2:46choose the wall that sits behind your
  70. 2:48desk, then add shelving. Paint this area
  71. 2:50a matte charcoal color, then line the
  72. 2:53shelving with wood. Fill the shelving
  73. 2:55with leather bound books and bronze
  74. 2:57accents. In that simple three-part act,
  75. 3:01you have created gravity with the dark
  76. 3:03backdrop, added relief through the
  77. 3:05lighter objects in front, and framed the
  78. 3:07desk area so that it's a focal point.
  79. 3:10The second is the leather anchor. Great
  80. 3:12for a living room, a lounge, or a den.
  81. 3:15Most people begin with light or neutral
  82. 3:17walls. With this technique, you can keep
  83. 3:19them that way. Introduce a large dark
  84. 3:22leather sectional or club chair as the
  85. 3:24main weight of the room. Pair it with a
  86. 3:26wool or jute rug, solid wood coffee
  87. 3:29table, and aged brass lighting. You have
  88. 3:31just quickly created visual authority.
  89. 3:34The darker anchor is your seat of
  90. 3:36tactile command enhanced by the
  91. 3:38surrounding lightness. The third is the
  92. 3:40espresso ceiling or wall paneling. This
  93. 3:43works well in bedrooms, studies, and
  94. 3:45libraries. If you choose the ceiling
  95. 3:47route, install real or faux ceiling
  96. 3:50beams. Stain those in an espresso oak.
  97. 3:52If you go with wall paneling, you can
  98. 3:55find those pre-made in smoked walnut.
  99. 3:58Use linen drapery on your windows, wall
  100. 4:00throws layered over the bed or seating,
  101. 4:02and stone finish accent items,
  102. 4:05sculptures, lights, vases, bookends. If
  103. 4:08you have a fireplace, a stone mantle or
  104. 4:10surround. Presence now exists. The dark
  105. 4:13wood acts as an architectural weight
  106. 4:16overhead or in a cocoon-like way.
  107. 4:19Presence lives through definition, which
  108. 4:21lives through contrast. Dark against
  109. 4:23light, smooth against texture, mass
  110. 4:26against openness. It's what gives a room
  111. 4:28its rhythm, and a man his composure
  112. 4:31within it. Shaping your space through
  113. 4:33depth and balance inevitably shapes you
  114. 4:35back. The room becomes quieter, more
  115. 4:38deliberate, and so do you. Remember that
  116. 4:40your environment is a mirror. It doesn't
  117. 4:43care how you present yourself, but it
  118. 4:45will reflect how you present yourself.
  119. 4:47If you like the video, hit the thumbs
  120. 4:49up. If you feel like sticking around a
  121. 4:50while, feel free to subscribe. See you
  122. 4:52on the next one.
