The NEW Tesla Roadster: My Honest Reaction — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02Okay,
- 0:03so... wow.
- 0:06So last night,
- 0:08Tesla had one of maybe
- 0:11maybe the... most...
- 0:12insane
- 0:13product demos of all time.
- 0:16It had a completely redesigned, brand new...
- 0:18cyber-looking... car,
- 0:19then it had a car
- 0:20driving
- 0:22up a wall, then an
- 0:23upside-down car,
- 0:25then a flying car,
- 0:27then a car that jumps and does a
- 0:28kickflip, and then a 0.6-second...
- 0:310 to 60.
- 0:32And yet realistically, a lot of this stuff
- 0:34was... a distraction
- 0:36from
- 0:37the facts and figures that we got...
- 0:38the next morning,
- 0:39today,
- 0:40on the actual Tesla Roadster itself.
- 0:43So I guess if part of my job for the last decade has been
- 0:47watching and attending these tech events
- 0:49and deciphering... what's
- 0:50real versus... what you should pay attention to, what is
- 0:53fluff,
- 0:54then I
- 0:55figured
- 0:56I should
- 0:57definitely do this one. So RIP to the 2020 Tesla Roadster.
- 1:00You'll be missed...
- 1:01even though you never existed.
- 1:02But yeah, we've got a lot to talk about. Also,
- 1:05I hope the weather holds up 'cause it looks like it may rain at some point,
- 1:08but my fingers are crossed.
- 1:10So anyway, yeah, a lot of people... after last night...
- 1:12were freaking out
- 1:13and rightfully so... 'cause it was...
- 1:15pretty insane. A lot of people were also
- 1:18very skeptical
- 1:19and rightfully so, because it was
- 1:21pretty insane.
- 1:22But I think
- 1:23as there is with a lot of this stuff, there was actually...
- 1:25a bit of nuance to it.
- 1:26I think a good amount of what we saw last night at the Tesla Roadster event
- 1:30was, it
- 1:31was actually really cool.
- 1:32It was stuff that a lot of car people
- 1:33are at least interested in from an engineering perspective
- 1:37and were looking forward to.
- 1:39And then a lot of other parts of it... were
- 1:41completely insane... that...
- 1:43I don't think we will ever see in person.
- 1:45So at the event itself, they started by just
- 1:47re-unveiling
- 1:49the Tesla Roadster... It's completely
- 1:51redesigned. It looks
- 1:52nothing like the one that was originally on stage back in 2017.
- 1:55And this thing looks like some sort of a...
- 1:58cyberified interpretation
- 2:00of
- 2:01a Lamborghini, maybe a Murciélago,
- 2:02if I'm being
- 2:03generous. It's very minimal,
- 2:04very... angular.
- 2:06It's got these... triangle shapes, these slot headlights.
- 2:09The doors go up now instead of going out.
- 2:11There's a headlight bar at the front and a taillight bar
- 2:14at the back, very
- 2:15Cybertruck and modern EV.
- 2:17And then the back just has a lot going on: a huge moving wing,
- 2:20it has exhaust tips,
- 2:21which might seem a little crazy on an electric car,
- 2:24but that will make a lot more sense in a second.
- 2:26Me personally, I don't really love this new design,
- 2:28at least my first impression.
- 2:30I actually think the old car
- 2:31was quite pretty,
- 2:32even though it never existed.
- 2:33I thought that design was really cool and I was looking forward to it.
- 2:36This one,
- 2:37eh,
- 2:38some parts of it yes, some parts of it no. It's gonna take some time
- 2:40to grow on me, and trust me, it'll have time
- 2:43to grow on me.
- 2:44But then there's all the other capabilities...
- 2:46to talk about. So first thing it does
- 2:49is start to drive... up a
- 2:50wall
- 2:51slowly.
- 2:52It just approaches it and it starts to get a more and more impossible angle,
- 2:55and then it just drives straight up a wall
- 2:58until... it's completely
- 3:00upside down.
- 3:01It's
- 3:02stuck to this ramp like 60 feet in the air
- 3:04and is producing over 4,000 kilograms of downforce
- 3:07while
- 3:08not driving, not moving.
- 3:09This is basically revealing
- 3:10that it's
- 3:11a fan
- 3:13car,
- 3:14which
- 3:15we have seen before, but we'll get to that in a second.
- 3:16But then it goes back up that ramp again,
- 3:17and then the second time it goes up, it literally vaults
- 3:20off the top and does this insane
- 3:22flip maneuver, spinning around
- 3:24and then
- 3:25landing on the ground tires down. So
- 3:27clearly... there are...
- 3:28thrusters all around the car pointed in all directions that are powerful
- 3:31enough to move the entire car
- 3:34in space,
- 3:35and then there's enough compressed air somewhere
- 3:37as a source
- 3:38to get the car to flip and then land softly
- 3:41and drive away... This
- 3:43is
- 3:44insane, obviously. So first of all,
- 3:46this was
- 3:47an... autonomous demo.
- 3:48This
- 3:49is a pre-scripted—
- 3:50there's no
- 3:51real human in the car,
- 3:52but it's a pre-scripted sort of robotic demo,
- 3:53probably for safety purposes.
- 3:56Think of it kind of like a... Boston Dynamics
- 3:58robot. It's capable of that,
- 3:59but this is like your best-case scenario and like the coolest thing
- 4:02they could possibly make it do. But then yeah,
- 4:04a lot of the thoughts you're having in your head about like,
- 4:06is this even
- 4:07possible?
- 4:08Is this
- 4:09legal? Why would I want a car to do this?
- 4:11All of those are, I think, perfectly reasonable thoughts to have.
- 4:14It's also a pretty insane,
- 4:17radical,
- 4:18never-before-seen
- 4:20flying... car demo.
- 4:21that left a lot of questions unanswered.
- 4:24So... both things can be true.
- 4:26But really the strange thing to me is that this event,
- 4:28hosted by Tesla,
- 4:29doesn't really answer most of these
- 4:31important questions for people curious about the product...
- 4:34But then the next morning,
- 4:35today,
- 4:36we get
- 4:37at least 3 different videos from
- 4:38MotorTrend and Hagerty and Top Gear
- 4:40that combined with the newly refreshed Tesla website...
- 4:43have helped us understand a lot more
- 4:45about what's actually
- 4:46happening here. So let's just break it down...
- 4:48What they didn't say at the event
- 4:50is there are 4
- 4:51versions
- 4:52of this Roadster. There's the base,
- 4:54the Performance,
- 4:56the Thrust,
- 4:57and... Rocket
- 4:58specs.
- 4:59So the base car just sounds like, you know, the basic
- 5:01EV
- 5:02by itself with none of the frills, none of the party tricks.
- 5:04It's not even mentioned on the website.
- 5:06This is just what I heard from Franz in the MotorTrend video.
- 5:09But he said there's a base one
- 5:11that has none of the extra stuff.
- 5:12Then the Performance version of the Roadster...
- 5:15is this car
- 5:16with
- 5:17a fan system... for downforce...
- 5:19So no cold gas thrusters yet,
- 5:21but the fan car
- 5:22is
- 5:23already... an
- 5:25absolutely insane idea.
- 5:25If you've been in the car world for a little bit,
- 5:27you've probably already heard about this little project,
- 5:29this little car called... the McMurtry Spéirling.
- 5:31And that thing... is...
- 5:32a single-seater,
- 5:33fully electric car
- 5:35with this whole fan system underneath and behind it.
- 5:38And it is
- 5:39absolutely
- 5:40insane.
- 5:41Obviously,
- 5:42the amount of grip you have while driving is super important to how
- 5:44well the car can handle, right?
- 5:46So for many years,
- 5:47we've seen this steady improvement... in sports cars,
- 5:50just improving aerodynamically because
- 5:52as the car reaches higher speeds, you have tons of air
- 5:55passing over the car
- 5:56and it can
- 5:57redirect that air
- 5:58up or down
- 5:59to push
- 6:00the car
- 6:01down into the ground. This is all about getting more grip.
- 6:02So instead of losing traction,
- 6:04pushing the car down in the ground helps keep it stuck so you can actually turn
- 6:08more aggressively... and not lose grip...
- 6:09You ever put your hand out the window on the highway like this and the
- 6:12air moves your hand up and down? Same idea...
- 6:15The car
- 6:16has different shaped pieces that help push
- 6:18the car down, but
- 6:19that only works
- 6:20at higher speeds, right?
- 6:22So if you want that same
- 6:23level of downforce at lower speeds,
- 6:25the idea of a fan
- 6:26car or the fan system
- 6:27is to put a fan
- 6:29that's connected... to some
- 6:30low-pressure area underneath the car
- 6:32that sucks the air out from under the car,
- 6:34creates a low-pressure zone so that the air above the car
- 6:38pushes it down. So that
- 6:39is what the McMurtry Spéirling is doing.
- 6:41It literally drops down a skirt underneath the car to create
- 6:44a little vacuum-sealed area,
- 6:46and it spins a fan
- 6:48at the back of the car...
- 6:49at a ridiculously high RPM.
- 6:51And that
- 6:52duct system basically keeps the car
- 6:54firmly planted to the ground...
- 6:55It generates more downforce... than the actual
- 6:58weight of the car,
- 6:59which is why,
- 7:00yes,
- 7:01they've
- 7:02already done
- 7:03the driving
- 7:04upside down stunt. Maybe it didn't get as much PR, but...
- 7:06that's how much force
- 7:08this system generates. So it's...
- 7:10unbelievably capable on a track.
- 7:11There's a bunch of videos of it smoking the fastest
- 7:14high-downforce track cars in the world...
- 7:16around low-speed corners,
- 7:18literally
- 7:19driving
- 7:20around a GT3 RS, just absolutely nuts.
- 7:22That extra downforce makes the biggest difference at the lowest speeds.
- 7:26So from a launch from 0 to 60,
- 7:28it can put... all of its power down
- 7:30immediately,
- 7:31which is over 1,000 horsepower.
- 7:34And the McMurtry does
- 7:350 to 60 miles an hour
- 7:37in 1.4 seconds. Just shoots out in 1.4 seconds.
- 7:40It's crazy...
- 7:41And so there's videos of this thing going to different tracks and
- 7:45basically demolishing every lap record...
- 7:47everywhere they go because this thing finds
- 7:49grip... in places that other cars
- 7:51don't.
- 7:52It is genuinely one of the coolest
- 7:53science fair
- 7:54project cars
- 7:55that the world has ever seen.
- 7:57I kind of still want to get to drive one at one point.
- 7:59That'd be awesome.
- 8:01And so
- 8:02the Tesla Roadster
- 8:03inherits
- 8:04this
- 8:05fan
- 8:06system, and so it also inherits
- 8:07a 1.6-second... 0 to 60, which is nuts.
- 8:09And I'm
- 8:11I'm on the fence
- 8:13about whether or not... this
- 8:14could be street legal.
- 8:15I mean, I guess the law is the law.
- 8:17It's either legal or it isn't.
- 8:18But like there are lots of
- 8:19roads...
- 8:20where you probably would not want to use this system...
- 8:22because... there are potholes...
- 8:23and bumps and imperfections and things like that.
- 8:26So the skirts on the Spéirling... and the Roadster
- 8:28are made from like
- 8:29rubber and they're flexible and they're easily replaceable when
- 8:32they inevitably get worn out from
- 8:33dragging along the ground.
- 8:34But still, like the car has
- 8:36fans at the back, it literally hoovers up
- 8:37anything that's on the road under the car.
- 8:39And so it needs filters down there so
- 8:41large items don't get caught up in the fans.
- 8:43And the smaller pieces like little bits of gravel
- 8:45actually do make it through the fan system and shoot out the back.
- 8:48So if
- 8:49you are driving behind a fan
- 8:50car... while the fan is spinning,
- 8:52lots of air
- 8:53and lots of little debris
- 8:54is
- 8:55literally shooting out the back of it. So the McMurtry,
- 8:57I don't think is street legal with the fans running,
- 9:00but they also have said they're working on a street legal version.
- 9:02So
- 9:03very curious about that. It also depends on
- 9:05where the laws are, where you're driving.
- 9:07Tesla is calling this Performance trim... "road ready"
- 9:10in their language.
- 9:11So it seems like they're ready to have this car or this version,
- 9:14this trim of the car
- 9:15be street legal...
- 9:16If it's not, you can expect to see it like GPS
- 9:18locked to just
- 9:19tracks
- 9:20or... drag strips and stuff like that.
- 9:22But
- 9:23then there's the next version of the trim,
- 9:25which is called
- 9:26"Thrust." That version of the car
- 9:29will have
- 9:30a fan system... already.
- 9:31And then it will also add
- 9:33thrusters
- 9:35to the back
- 9:36of the car. So at the back of the Roadster, you see
- 9:38these 4 fans... at the bottom.
- 9:40That's the suction system. Then the 4
- 9:43bigger exhaust pipes at the top,
- 9:45that is the thrust system.
- 9:47And that's where it starts to get crazy
- 9:49because... those pipes...
- 9:51are attached to... a...
- 9:52200-liter
- 9:53carbon-overlaid pressure vessel.
- 9:56When it's full,
- 9:57it's carrying
- 9:58100+... kilograms of pressurized nitrogen...
- 10:00at
- 10:0110,000 PSI
- 10:02right behind the driver's head,
- 10:04this little ball. And
- 10:05and that is insane...
- 10:07It's just objectively...
- 10:09completely insane.
- 10:11But that is how
- 10:12they
- 10:13combined with the fan system
- 10:15are able to achieve a sub-1-second
- 10:170 to 60
- 10:19in that car. 'Cause you're
- 10:20you're past the limit of traction on tires at this point.
- 10:22You're just,
- 10:23you're strapping yourself to a little mini rocket and just,
- 10:26just, just gone. They showed demo videos of this
- 10:28at the event...
- 10:29Tons of compressed nitrogen coming out the back.
- 10:31It's pulling
- 10:32a couple of Gs
- 10:33and yeah,
- 10:34literally hits 60 miles an hour before it goes the length of a driveway.
- 10:37Some quick back-of-the-napkin math: that's like
- 10:403 Gs,
- 10:413 lateral Gs, which is
- 10:44crazy
- 10:45to experience in a car. Most cars,
- 10:47the limit of grip on tires is typically like 1.2,
- 10:50maybe 1.3 Gs. So that's nuts.
- 10:53And
- 10:54you know, roller coasters do 3 Gs. It's not like...
- 10:55dangerous to your body, but it's just
- 10:57holding your
- 10:58arms
- 10:59up to the steering wheel
- 11:00will be
- 11:013 times harder
- 11:02than it normally would be. This one, again,
- 11:05not sure about... street legalness...
- 11:07You know, at the event they did this demo...
- 11:09hundreds of feet away from people
- 11:12and gave them hearing protection
- 11:14because
- 11:15those thrusters
- 11:16are
- 11:17incredibly
- 11:18loud on top of the already loud fans.
- 11:19There are definitely laws about how loud cars are allowed to
- 11:21be in certain places to pass
- 11:23regulations and actually be shipped...
- 11:24And so that will come into factor here.
- 11:27There's also like, there's lots of cars that
- 11:30like if you stand right behind a,
- 11:32you know, a
- 11:33quad exhaust, like a C8 Corvette
- 11:34and they rev it, like it'll burn your legs.
- 11:37So there's lots of
- 11:38crazy stuff happening in the sports car world already.
- 11:41But actually what I'm most concerned about
- 11:43is crash test... safety.
- 11:46Like cold gas thrusters
- 11:48and massive,
- 11:49carbon-overlaid compressed air canisters.
- 11:51It's great with rockets, I understand that,
- 11:54but rockets don't get crash safety tested like cars because if a rocket crashes,
- 11:58it's kind of—... that's kind of it, right?
- 12:00Um,
- 12:01but
- 12:02what happens
- 12:03in the event of a safety incident
- 12:05when you have a massive
- 12:07balloon of
- 12:0810,000 PSI compressed air next to your head?
- 12:09I just, I don't know
- 12:11what
- 12:12the plan is there. But anyway, the last spec,
- 12:14the last... promised spec
- 12:16is
- 12:17the... "Rocket"
- 12:19spec. And so this
- 12:20levels up again. So...
- 12:21it still has the fans at the bottom,
- 12:23it still has the thrusters at the back,
- 12:26but it adds... 6 more thrusters
- 12:28around the car facing
- 12:29various directions.
- 12:31And it also adds
- 12:33one... massive
- 12:34400-liter
- 12:36compressed air tank
- 12:37in... like the passenger seat area.
- 12:40So it becomes a one-seater. But anyway,
- 12:43all this extra compressed gas and all this extra thrusting
- 12:46will allow
- 12:47the party trick that we saw
- 12:49from the event,
- 12:50like jumping
- 12:51or
- 12:52doing a...
- 12:53massive kickflip over a 40-foot section of road for some reason,
- 12:56all of that stuff.
- 12:57Oh, and it'll do a 0 to 60... in
- 13:000.6 seconds,
- 13:01which sounds painful.
- 13:05This
- 13:06is
- 13:07pretty clearly... never going to be street legal.
- 13:08And I mean,
- 13:09that much is already clear on their website.
- 13:11They've already said it's not approved for public road use.
- 13:14But you can also
- 13:15only get... this car
- 13:16via... invite,
- 13:17which is a perfect little segmentation on their website to avoid...
- 13:19the liability of ever having to sell this
- 13:23to... a group outside of a very, very, very
- 13:25limited number of people. And I think...
- 13:27that that's
- 13:28why
- 13:29this event felt so weird to me because they
- 13:31basically went all in... on this
- 13:34insane
- 13:35demo,
- 13:36which to their credit, it was an insane demo.
- 13:37And there was a ton
- 13:38of engineering that went behind it, probably many, many months...
- 13:42and months
- 13:43of trial
- 13:44and
- 13:45error... I mean,
- 13:46imagine being told by your boss you need to make
- 13:48a fan... car
- 13:49that can drive up the side of a building, but also...
- 13:53upside down and then
- 13:54fly off a wall
- 13:55and land on its wheels. Like,
- 13:57that's just a stupid amount of work that essentially amounts to a party trick.
- 14:02Like
- 14:03a really,
- 14:04really
- 14:05crazy,
- 14:06futuristic, insane
- 14:07engineering party trick... But is it even a party trick?
- 14:09Like, can you do this in your driveway? Are you allowed
- 14:11to... have your car take off and fly 40 feet?
- 14:14Like, where... are you...
- 14:15even... able to do this?
- 14:16There's some talk about whether or not it was a real full-weight
- 14:19car
- 14:20that did the demo...
- 14:21And I mean, I don't know, if I was in charge,
- 14:23I'd be pulling some strings,
- 14:24like using a smaller battery and just doing anything I can to make sure
- 14:27it doesn't go horribly wrong. But
- 14:29that almost doesn't even matter. I think
- 14:31the... craziness of
- 14:32how
- 14:33extreme... that this event...
- 14:34was
- 14:35and how all
- 14:36in they went on this... crazy party trick was
- 14:38both
- 14:39figuratively... and literally
- 14:40smoke
- 14:41and mirrors
- 14:42in front of
- 14:43abandoning the old Roadster that spent some
- 14:45unknown amount of time in development and is now
- 14:48just
- 14:49never coming out.
- 14:50Now,
- 14:51this one is
- 14:52supposed to be
- 14:532028.
- 14:54That's the new promise. That's what they said on stage.
- 14:57But then it kind of just... ended.
- 14:58Like, there wasn't really much more information
- 15:00after the crazy demos.
- 15:02And if you didn't watch anything else, then you'd miss
- 15:05a lot of other interesting engineering about the Roadster that started
- 15:08to show up in the videos
- 15:09this morning
- 15:10on
- 15:11things like Top Gear and the MotorTrend video that I talked about.
- 15:14Like,
- 15:14did you know this new Roadster's supposed to be...
- 15:17all... carbon fiber body panels
- 15:19and
- 15:20weigh... under 1,700 kilograms?
- 15:21Like that,
- 15:22that's... 1,700 kilograms is less than this car!
- 15:24This car is a gas car,
- 15:26has a gas tank.
- 15:27Batteries are typically incredibly heavy and EVs
- 15:29are typically incredibly heavy...
- 15:31This car weighs more
- 15:33somehow... than their promised Roadster.
- 15:35Did you know that the new Roadster is supposed to have...
- 15:38just... rear-wheel drive?
- 15:41Usually these cars are incredibly fast because they're
- 15:44all-wheel drive. And
- 15:45the Roadster is
- 15:47just rear-wheel drive for the driving engagement...
- 15:49And so
- 15:50all
- 15:52of the 1,300 horsepower and 1,400 Newton-meters of torque...
- 15:54come from the new
- 15:55dual motors
- 15:56at the rear, which are also now smaller
- 15:59and more power-dense than even what we saw in Plaid.
- 16:02The range... went...
- 16:03way down... from 600 miles to just...
- 16:05a promised 300+,
- 16:07but they also talked about 500-kilowatt supercharging,
- 16:10which would be the fastest we've seen in the US
- 16:12at the new V4 Superchargers,
- 16:1415... to
- 16:1580%... charge
- 16:16in 10 minutes.
- 16:17Did you know what they're promising with this Roadster?
- 16:1925 to 30 minutes of full-on... maximum
- 16:22power, max attack track
- 16:23mode driving... That's also pretty rare...
- 16:25for an EV. Typically, thermals
- 16:27and thermal management get in the way of that,
- 16:31but you could do legitimately multiple laps
- 16:33before you have to
- 16:34recharge, but then recharge quickly.
- 16:35It's a little more reasonable to expect this to be a car that
- 16:38actually sees a track someday.
- 16:39There's a whole bunch of active aero bits.
- 16:41There's a charging port behind the rear
- 16:43wing.
- 16:44There is a movable pedal box...
- 16:46There's a double wishbone suspension,
- 16:49brake-by-wire, steer
- 16:50by
- 16:51wire.
- 16:52The windows are tinted with a gold accent color to mimic a spacesuit visor.
- 16:55Like,
- 16:56there's just so much going on with this car.
- 16:58So like, if you're gonna do
- 17:00a new
- 17:01unveiling
- 17:02for a car that you've apparently spent a bunch of development time
- 17:05and... resources
- 17:06and
- 17:07hours on, I would've
- 17:09personally preferred if you showed that
- 17:12instead of spending... so much time...
- 17:14on... just the party trick and then...
- 17:16no extra information.
- 17:17But instead, here we are...
- 17:18all now distracted by the, like, rocket thruster stuff
- 17:21and the,
- 17:22like,
- 17:23at one point they said it was gonna go half the speed of sound,
- 17:25which come on, like
- 17:28it's,
- 17:29I'm pretty sure it's not gonna do that.
- 17:30The thrust mode is
- 17:31over in
- 17:323
- 17:34to 5 seconds and then the tank is empty.
- 17:35So
- 17:36it's basically one-time use
- 17:37before you have to refill it,
- 17:38which
- 17:40in the Hagerty video they said would take 6 to 7
- 17:42hours to refill. And the rocket thing, you know, doing a
- 17:45kickflip,
- 17:46incredible demo, you gotta admit.
- 17:48If literally any other company did that demo,
- 17:50we'd
- 17:51all be shocked. But...
- 17:52aside from being a really cool engineering demo,
- 17:54that
- 17:55to me doesn't have any other connection to,
- 17:57like, real-world performance benefit... The fan stuff,
- 18:00it does.
- 18:01Obviously, more downforce and more grip equals...
- 18:04better cornering and handling and faster lap times.
- 18:06It makes perfect sense.
- 18:07That's why we've been seeing this on other cars.
- 18:09Even the thrusters at the back, you could say, okay,
- 18:12that's like a cool
- 18:13straight-line... drag race...
- 18:14gimmick, one-time thing. Fine.
- 18:18You
- 18:19could make an argument
- 18:20for... safety...
- 18:21in extreme braking events for, like,
- 18:23putting
- 18:24the thrusters on other parts of the car,
- 18:27but the kickflip over something... and the...
- 18:29jumping down off of the... ramp,
- 18:31I mean, that, it's just distracting.
- 18:33And let's be real, do you really want the...
- 18:35people that you see on the highway every day when you commute
- 18:38with cars that are able to
- 18:40jump when they don't have a pilot's license?
- 18:43So... yeah, I guess
- 18:44marketing is marketing, and
- 18:46they have, in fact, abandoned the car... that
- 18:49they initially
- 18:50had spent some number of years out of the past 9 years
- 18:53developing.
- 18:54I don't know how I would feel... if I had been...
- 18:56in
- 18:58for some amount of money
- 18:59this entire time... and just saw the car
- 19:00completely change like that.
- 19:02But hey, to their credit, the referral reward free Roadster
- 19:06is still in my account...
- 19:08and with the updated picture. So...
- 19:10I guess maybe... that is still happening.
- 19:12Maybe I'm still getting it. I don't know.
- 19:14Get subscribed to see that...
- 19:15I will keep you guys... posted.
- 19:17But I guess that actually brings us to the last question,
- 19:19which is just,
- 19:21will they actually—this is the big question they ended with...
- 19:23They're gonna ship in 2028 is what they,
- 19:25of course they promised it on stage.
- 19:27Will they actually
- 19:29ship
- 19:30this
- 19:31thing by
- 19:322028? Starting to sound familiar.
- 19:32So... the flying one...
- 19:33with the rocket one,
- 19:35no.
- 19:36That there's just no way... you
- 19:37or
- 19:38I... will ever be able to buy this car.
- 19:40Of course, it's conveniently invite-only.
- 19:42We might as well ignore this ever
- 19:43becoming a real product.
- 19:45The base one, the fan car one even,
- 19:49I
- 19:50can see that actually, yes,
- 19:51being possible. But at this point,
- 19:54I actually
- 19:55don't even think it matters... because...
- 19:57Tesla has
- 19:58proven to us by now... that
- 20:00the Roadster
- 20:01is by far their least important product. Like, McMurtry...
- 20:04has been putting in
- 20:05a
- 20:06ton of public development work for this
- 20:07fan car idea. It doesn't surprise me one bit that...
- 20:09Tesla can come in and
- 20:10sort of big-brother them and all the other fan car concepts
- 20:13that came before them
- 20:15and use their
- 20:16bigger bankroll
- 20:17to try to bring it to life.
- 20:18But we shouldn't ignore that there's a reason
- 20:21that
- 20:22this... 2020 Roadster went...
- 20:239
- 20:24years and never actually came...
- 20:25out, never actually existed.
- 20:27It's because it doesn't make a difference to the company if it comes out or not.
- 20:30It makes
- 20:31no difference to their bottom line. It's so low volume.
- 20:33Matter of fact, they actually recently
- 20:36killed Model S...
- 20:37and Model X, which are very well-known cars,
- 20:39because they also weren't selling enough to make a difference to the bottom line.
- 20:43They have priorities...
- 20:44like Model 3 and Model Y
- 20:46and the humanoid robot stuff they plan on in the future.
- 20:48You think they care about Roadster? Fool me once,
- 20:51shame on you.
- 20:52Fool me twice, Yeah, shame on me.
- 20:54I'm not
- 20:56gonna be holding my breath
- 20:57for this to suddenly become a priority... for them to...
- 20:59start picking things up and shipping this thing
- 21:01right on time. But this event,
- 21:03given how much
- 21:04everyone is talking about it,
- 21:06was
- 21:07clearly
- 21:08a successful... engineering exercise...
- 21:09and marketing stunt.
- 21:10It's really what it is.
- 21:11A few months of incredible engineering,
- 21:14a
- 21:15demo that
- 21:16no one has... ever seen before.
- 21:17That's enough material to talk about Tesla for another few years.
- 21:20I was actually just digging into my account to see...
- 21:22what was going on with the Roadster...
- 21:24There's a Tesla Roadster reservation agreement.
- 21:27There's a nice little bullet point, number four,
- 21:30that reads
- 21:31that you understand that the Roadster is still
- 21:34under development at the time you enter into this agreement,
- 21:36so we cannot
- 21:37guarantee
- 21:38when your vehicle
- 21:39will actually be
- 21:40delivered
- 21:41or if... it will be delivered.
- 21:45Very interesting. You know, I think the take from
- 21:47Henry Catchpole at the end of the...
- 21:49Hagerty video is actually really... fair, which is,
- 21:52you know, it seems like Tesla's realized that just
- 21:55a really, really fast electric car doesn't really
- 21:57do it for people... anymore.
- 21:59Like, it's old news.
- 22:00We've seen that by now,
- 22:02and
- 22:03they already make Plaid, so—... or made Plaid.
- 22:05So they abandoned it and swapped it out for something that
- 22:09kind of does do it for some people anyway,
- 22:11which
- 22:12is
- 22:13the dream
- 22:15of a flying car... It's this
- 22:16fun idea,
- 22:17and it makes way more headlines.
- 22:19And even if they never ship the thing,
- 22:21then that successful engineering exercise is at least a spectacle that we can
- 22:24talk about as a marketing success.
- 22:26So yeah,
- 22:27thanks for watching.
- 22:28And for more car-focused videos and thoughts on cars,
- 22:31get subscribed to the Auto Focus channel.
- 22:33And if you do end up seeing a Tesla Roadster review,
- 22:35that's where it'll be.
- 22:36Catch you guys in the next one.
- 22:38Peace.
