  1. 0:01all
  2. 0:02right so I want to talk now about the
  3. 0:06New Deal I actually grew up in a town
  4. 0:08called New Deal which was not very far
  5. 0:10from my
  6. 0:11hometown so the New Deal is this it's
  7. 0:14basically a change in the way the
  8. 0:16government is used in the midst of the
  9. 0:17Great Depression the Great Depression
  10. 0:19was a terrible event it was it was such
  11. 0:22a terrible economic event and people
  12. 0:24didn't know what to do um the federal
  13. 0:27government didn't know how to respond
  14. 0:29and so Franklin Donald Roosevelt FDR is
  15. 0:31elected president with the New Deal and
  16. 0:34with the New Deal he's going to pass
  17. 0:36basically all kinds of different laws as
  18. 0:39really quickly to uh with the New Deal
  19. 0:42and again the his first 100 days aund 15
  20. 0:46different pieces of legislation are
  21. 0:48passed through Congress and think about
  22. 0:49that think about how hard it is for just
  23. 0:51a regular president today to pass
  24. 0:52something through Congress 15 major
  25. 0:55bills are are going to be passed through
  26. 0:57Congress so I'm just going to talk a
  27. 0:58little bit about some of these bills BS
  28. 1:00I me this is not going to necessarily
  29. 1:01have the narrative story that I've had
  30. 1:03in the past because I want to kind of
  31. 1:04throw up some of these bills literally
  32. 1:06throw up get it my wife says I'm not
  33. 1:10funny and so one of the first things
  34. 1:12that he addresses literally the first
  35. 1:13thing that he addresses is the banking
  36. 1:15crisis the banks were losing money like
  37. 1:18crazy in fact if your money was in a
  38. 1:20bank and your bank went under if you've
  39. 1:21seen uh It's a Wonderful Life and you
  40. 1:23know George biley he's got that $1 he
  41. 1:25saves it with one if banks go under you
  42. 1:28lose your money there's a famous story
  43. 1:30of this janitor who had been saving a
  44. 1:32th000 his whole life had saved $1,000
  45. 1:34George Gallas was his name and I got
  46. 1:36this from this Century America's time
  47. 1:38it's a great documentary series by the
  48. 1:40way and he ,000 doar of his money saved
  49. 1:44over time which is a lot of money back
  50. 1:45then and the bank goes under he spends a
  51. 1:49couple days literally banging banging on
  52. 1:51the outside of the bank and you realize
  53. 1:53he won't get any of his money he goes
  54. 1:55back to his basement where he lived and
  55. 1:56he hung
  56. 1:58himself Bank ERS
  57. 2:01destroyed the hope of people because
  58. 2:04they had no way of getting this money
  59. 2:06back so FDR will close down the banks
  60. 2:08for a few days reopen them assuring
  61. 2:11America that they're going to be
  62. 2:12reopened because the federal government
  63. 2:14has been able to make sure that they're
  64. 2:15all sound that is something that is not
  65. 2:17he could not have done this but he uses
  66. 2:19basically the radio to convey this and
  67. 2:21this is something interesting also about
  68. 2:23FDR he used the given technology in a
  69. 2:26way to where he reached out to the
  70. 2:27people he used the radio he would give
  71. 2:28these Fireside chats he didn't give a
  72. 2:31lot of them over his 13 years as
  73. 2:32president but he gave these Fireside
  74. 2:34Chats and he when major events and it
  75. 2:37made the people feel more secure and he
  76. 2:39did it in a way where he explained what
  77. 2:41was going on to the people so the radio
  78. 2:43was really important it's like
  79. 2:44technology now it's just like every
  80. 2:46president use technology I mean we have
  81. 2:48a current president or a current who's
  82. 2:51going to use Twitter a lot right he's
  83. 2:53going to basically use his Twitter
  84. 2:55account to to reach the people without
  85. 2:57any kind of uh chorus or or any kind of
  86. 3:01commentary he can speak directly to us
  87. 3:05whether good or bad and so that's what
  88. 3:08FDR does right he uses the radio and so
  89. 3:11in doing this one of the other things
  90. 3:13he's going to do and I'm just gonna kind
  91. 3:14of list some the things he does he
  92. 3:15creates the FDIC which ensures money it
  93. 3:18ensures your money in the banks up to at
  94. 3:20that time I think it was $10,000 now
  95. 3:22it's $200,000 it doesn't affect me I
  96. 3:25have so much money that I keep my money
  97. 3:26in illegal offshore accounts just
  98. 3:29kidding I have
  99. 3:31$12.73 just enough for me and my wife to
  100. 3:34go to Wendy's this afternoon I'm very
  101. 3:36excited and so your money is insured in
  102. 3:38Banks and so then becomes literally this
  103. 3:41almost this alphabet soup of different
  104. 3:43things to try to make things better he's
  105. 3:45going to create the CCC the Civilian
  106. 3:47Conservation Corps which is going to
  107. 3:49create these different camps around the
  108. 3:51country it's only going to affect not
  109. 3:52even that 250 300,000 people not a lot
  110. 3:55of people but it's going to put at first
  111. 3:58young men to work young white men to
  112. 4:00work at first in these different camps
  113. 4:02and they're going to do conservation
  114. 4:03projects it's interesting when we talk
  115. 4:04about a president who does
  116. 4:07conservation it's going to be Teddy
  117. 4:09Roosevelt but this is Franklin donor
  118. 4:11Roosevelt who also beli deeply in
  119. 4:12conservation eventually you're GNA have
  120. 4:14segregated camps you're G to have camps
  121. 4:16for women across the country there's
  122. 4:18camps in the local area who worked on
  123. 4:20mother neev state park I think they were
  124. 4:21in Meridian state park I think so so
  125. 4:23even locally here in Texas we were
  126. 4:27affected with these camps mother nef
  127. 4:30State Park which is a great Park to go
  128. 4:31to if you're not very far away bored
  129. 4:34it's local it's a great Park so uh you
  130. 4:37you have this right here and this is
  131. 4:39going to be around until 1941 and so
  132. 4:42whenever the Japanese attack Pearl
  133. 4:44Harbor December 7th
  134. 4:461941 uh you're gonna have this in place
  135. 4:49it's run by the military so you're gonna
  136. 4:52have it people these individuals these
  137. 4:55young men would actually go and they
  138. 4:56would eat these they would have a
  139. 4:58breakfast surve like my nny used to fix
  140. 5:00like my nanny I love my nanny so much
  141. 5:02she's passed but she would always fix
  142. 5:06bacon eggs sausage gravy every morning
  143. 5:09my my grandfather lived to 82 I don't
  144. 5:12know how his heart did it with all this
  145. 5:15stuff like just literally pouring grease
  146. 5:17down his was beautiful right and then
  147. 5:20sandwiches for lunch and then a big
  148. 5:22supper I mean it was like literally
  149. 5:24going and being fed by my grandmother
  150. 5:25that's what these guys got and so and
  151. 5:28they would go out and work hard and and
  152. 5:30and cleared paths and plant
  153. 5:32trees very successful they were paid
  154. 5:35about 30 they were paid $30 a month $22
  155. 5:37will sent home to their families eight
  156. 5:39they got per month and this is really
  157. 5:42important FDR though they're still under
  158. 5:44the military uses these young men for
  159. 5:47conservation FDR puts these young men I
  160. 5:50mean uh Hitler at the same time puts
  161. 5:53these young men in the military and
  162. 5:54begins to rearm Germany so that's a big
  163. 5:56one you have the agricultural adjustment
  164. 6:00act which basically buys up
  165. 6:02surpluses interferes the market uh pigs
  166. 6:05are killed apples Dro by the side of the
  167. 6:07road to try to raise up farm farm prices
  168. 6:12raise the roof of farm prices eventually
  169. 6:15this is declared unconstitutional by the
  170. 6:17supr Supreme Court they're going to
  171. 6:19create another also during this time you
  172. 6:22have this dust bow going on out in the
  173. 6:24Great Plains basically from Amarillo by
  174. 6:27Morning up from San An
  175. 6:30everything that I got sorry basically
  176. 6:34from Amaral
  177. 6:36up is basically the loss of the top soil
  178. 6:40as these big dust storms come and push
  179. 6:43this the soil off there terrible drought
  180. 6:47hits in fact it called it the dirty 30s
  181. 6:50a lot of people fled there and they went
  182. 6:51to California the famous book The Grapes
  183. 6:54of Wrath in 1939 by John Steinbeck was
  184. 6:57was basically detailed this the J which
  185. 6:59came a I don't know if it won the
  186. 7:01Academy War but it was it was it was a
  187. 7:02very important movie that was made very
  188. 7:05quickly after um The Grapes of Wrath
  189. 7:08came out fact yeah so so basically you
  190. 7:11have this going on in the dust bow and
  191. 7:14so you have these different program you
  192. 7:15have the TVA which creates electricity
  193. 7:17in the South you have um you have uh the
  194. 7:23national industrial Recovery Act which
  195. 7:25basically tries to to set prices to fix
  196. 7:28prices fix output probably it's kind of
  197. 7:33considered part of What's called the
  198. 7:34Second New Deal one of the biggest
  199. 7:37Creations that really TR that really has
  200. 7:39changed things was the social the Social
  201. 7:41Security Act there had been this
  202. 7:44reformer named Dr Francis townin and
  203. 7:46townin was saying that if you're over 60
  204. 7:48years old you should get $200 a month
  205. 7:51every month and and I think back to my
  206. 7:54own family like so my
  207. 7:56mom when my great grandmothers
  208. 8:00husband when my great-grandfather died
  209. 8:01my great-grandmother came to live with
  210. 8:04my mom and her daughter-in-law and would
  211. 8:08actually sleep in the same bed as my mom
  212. 8:10so basically they took her in right they
  213. 8:12took in my great grandmother my great
  214. 8:15grandmother my mom and my nanny took her
  215. 8:17in and she contributed she she worked
  216. 8:19really hard she was very consumed with
  217. 8:22not being taking resources but that's
  218. 8:26what people did right they they they
  219. 8:27took in people who could no longer work
  220. 8:29there is no uh there is no way to to
  221. 8:32really care for those these individuals
  222. 8:34through the government so the Social
  223. 8:36Security Act is going to respond to this
  224. 8:37and it's going to do three things it's
  225. 8:38going to pass disability insurance it's
  226. 8:40going to pass uh unemployment insurance
  227. 8:44and it's going to pass a penion that
  228. 8:45comes out of paychecks now it's
  229. 8:48interesting we'll
  230. 8:50see I guess the question is how long
  231. 8:53that penion will continue on right for
  232. 8:56for us with Social Security but it's a
  233. 8:58really big big deal is money is taken
  234. 9:00out of our paychecks in fact if you look
  235. 9:01at your paychecks money is taken out of
  236. 9:03your paycheck and it's going to be
  237. 9:04interesting how this is dealt with is we
  238. 9:06have this large babber Boomer population
  239. 9:08that is now in the midst of beginning to
  240. 9:10retire so that'll be interesting but
  241. 9:11this is a fundamental shift in the
  242. 9:14government's relationship to the
  243. 9:15individual all of a sudden you're
  244. 9:18getting a paycheck basically when you
  245. 9:20from the government you have a a you
  246. 9:22have my grandfather Misty's dad has a
  247. 9:25relationship with a government that
  248. 9:26happens every month whenever money is
  249. 9:28put directly into his account that he
  250. 9:30relies upon right because of all his
  251. 9:32work his whole life paying into this
  252. 9:34fund now he has money coming out of this
  253. 9:35fund and that was pass that was a really
  254. 9:37important part of this second new deal
  255. 9:40so
  256. 9:40FDR so again FDR is pretty polarizing
  257. 9:44some people think he's the hero and then
  258. 9:46other people think that maybe he ruined
  259. 9:47government forever I don't want to even
  260. 9:49go into all those different places but I
  261. 9:51will say this the American system was
  262. 9:54was at least tottering in the 1931 1932
  263. 9:58I mean there was real fear about things
  264. 10:01really going on and really continuing
  265. 10:03people were really scared and FDR comes
  266. 10:06in and no a lot of his experiments
  267. 10:08didn't work he is able to stabilize
  268. 10:11thing things and continue the belief in
  269. 10:14the American political system at the end
  270. 10:15of the day FDR does not solve the Great
  271. 10:17Depression at his height at its best
  272. 10:20unemployment dropped to 15% and then it
  273. 10:22went back up uh what will basically
  274. 10:25bring the United States out of the Great
  275. 10:27Depression will be World War II too uh
  276. 10:30and war production basically supplying
  277. 10:32the allies before we're drawn in the war
  278. 10:34in 1941 but what F does last story so
  279. 10:39when President Obama became president he
  280. 10:41asked one of his advisers a guy David
  281. 10:43Axelrod if you know this guy's got the
  282. 10:45mustache he's got a cool mustache David
  283. 10:47axod David ax Rod's mom was still alive
  284. 10:50whenever he whenever President Obama was
  285. 10:52first elected and President Obama asked
  286. 10:54David Axelrod why does your mom love FDR
  287. 10:57so much like what is about him like what
  288. 11:00was it and she did not mention the
  289. 11:02Social Security Act or any of the many
  290. 11:04acts that were passed under him she said
  291. 11:06she felt like FDR cared for her and so
  292. 11:11he was somehow able to convey this
  293. 11:14empathy um for the nation and in some
  294. 11:20ways the way he guides the nation
  295. 11:23through these different again he's got
  296. 11:25major issu he's going to have the Great
  297. 11:26Depression and he's going to have World
  298. 11:27War II on the heels of Great Depression
  299. 11:30and the way he's able to guide the
  300. 11:31country through these two major
  301. 11:33cataclysmic events is is really was
  302. 11:36really important to D David David ex
  303. 11:38Rod's mom he she felt that the president
  304. 11:42he was somehow able to convey that he
  305. 11:45had her best interest in mind and I
  306. 11:48think that again she's a Democrat uh FDR
  307. 11:52was a Democrat but I think that's a
  308. 11:53great story about the importance of FDR
  309. 11:57from this adviser named David EXO
  310. 11:59thank you very much
