The Napalm Girl, Kim Phuc Phan Thi, shares her life testimony — Transcript

5. 0:12I'm speaking with Kim
6. 0:14folk um she is if many of you may know
7. 0:18her as the Napal girl in the in fact um
8. 0:22Kim can you hold up your book really
9. 0:24quickly for those who are watching she's
10. 0:27holding up the picture it's a very
11. 0:29famous picture of the Vietnam War and
12. 0:33Kim is the nine-year-old girl in the
13. 0:34middle
14. 0:35running
15. 0:37um that uh that picture received a
16. 0:41Pitzer prize it was taken by Nick
17. 0:43UT um and Kim actually started a
18. 0:48foundation to help children who are
19. 0:50victims of war like herself um and so
20. 0:55Kim you know I wanted to ask you oh you
21. 0:58can go ahead there you go
22. 1:01I wanted to ask you um because I know
23. 1:03you've been interviewed so much on this
24. 1:05already I kind of want to start near the
25. 1:07end here you've talked about this topic
26. 1:11for so many
27. 1:13years and have had so many interviews
28. 1:16about the Vietnam
29. 1:18War
30. 1:20and
31. 1:22um through your lifetime since you're
32. 1:26older now was the Vietnam War the
33. 1:30hardest thing you've gone through in
34. 1:32your life you
35. 1:36think you know talking about
36. 1:39War I think is uh it's horrible it's
37. 1:45terrifying it's because all is just
38. 1:49destroyed and of course during the war
39. 1:54time we
40. 1:56suffer and then post war
41. 2:00is even
42. 2:02more to deal
43. 2:05with the suffering of the people for
44. 2:08example the moment and got I when I got
45. 2:12burned it it terrified me
46. 2:16and one thing to another with the pain
47. 2:21with the loss but then after the
48. 2:26war we have to to deal with post war we
49. 2:30lost everything like before we have
50. 2:34everything we live very
51. 2:37lovely uh life and now nothing the house
52. 2:43was the house were destroyed we we just
53. 2:46walk in no more wall and the roof we can
54. 2:50see all the stars and you know like we
55. 2:54we we were hungry we have no more money
56. 2:58to to buy what we need it it's just a
57. 3:03really and we have to deal with some
58. 3:06more thing about trauma about nightmare
59. 3:11it's just so
60. 3:12fearful and that is a all thing um we
61. 3:18have to go through of that is the most
62. 3:22uh that's I this is in my memory um and
63. 3:27the fact like I got the the the scar you
64. 3:31see all my scar remind me where I come
65. 3:35from and not only the scars but the pain
66. 3:41all the time even 52 years now I I I'm
67. 3:47so thankful that
68. 3:52I
69. 3:53still uh survive and I'm so thankful
70. 3:59that I am not as a victims of war
71. 4:03anymore so I just really I am uh
72. 4:10dedicated of Peace because I know how
73. 4:14value of peace that I need and human
74. 4:19being need
75. 4:21it yeah do you you know when you
76. 4:25remember that time as a child now 52
77. 4:29years later
78. 4:30when you were talking about the memory
79. 4:32of War do you still have nightmares
80. 4:35about it or flashbacks to that time um
81. 4:41the
82. 4:42reality uh even when I was in uh uh
83. 4:46since I came to Canada in
84. 4:501992 yes H it it really hit me with a
85. 4:55lot of nightmare and and and Trauma and
86. 4:59you know really in in in my sleep I have
87. 5:04no control but the nightmare I woke up
88. 5:08just so so fearful and even in
89. 5:13Toronto I I I took the the
90. 5:18bus and even I saw the gentlemen were
91. 5:23the uniform army and all the fearful you
92. 5:28know I feel like War coming I was so so
93. 5:32scared but I always pray
94. 5:36God help me because that is something
95. 5:40you cannot control that yeah you know
96. 5:44true and the the fact that I always
97. 5:49working on
98. 5:51that for example one thing when I saw
99. 5:55that gentleman or uh the uniform Mommy
100. 6:00and then all the fearful War coming and
101. 6:03I have to turn my face
102. 6:06around and I don't I didn't want to see
103. 6:10him anymore and I speak loud enough my
104. 6:15ear can hear my voice Kim not true you
105. 6:18are in Canada you are in Toronto it no
106. 6:21war not in Vietnam is a liar and I want
107. 6:25I wanted to bring me back with the fact
108. 6:29I am in Canada and I didn't let my you
109. 6:34know like imagination or something it
110. 6:37bring me back badly that I have to work
111. 6:41and then I never allow myself thinking
112. 6:46about
113. 6:47negative thinking about positive and of
114. 6:50course the number one I have to pray a
115. 6:53lot God helped me and and show me gave
116. 6:57me a wisdom how to deal with that yeah
117. 7:02the number one I deal with I'm not
118. 7:05allowed to watch the war
119. 7:10movie okay something fighting and
120. 7:14violence and I love to watch I Love Lucy
121. 7:19all comedy yes I Love Lucy yes I love to
122. 7:25laugh and working on that way or or
123. 7:29something like nightmare I I I have no
124. 7:33control of that but then because I
125. 7:36didn't watch the a violence movie or or
126. 7:42a fighting movie or whatever angry of
127. 7:45fighting I just avoid that so that is
128. 7:49helped me in my mind in my soul I'm
129. 7:54not thinking about that not allow me
130. 7:58okay one thing I have to tell you I
131. 8:01learn from the past but I'm not leaving
132. 8:06in the past that help me if I living in
133. 8:10the past it just remind me all the time
134. 8:15like the wound the bomb exploded IR
135. 8:18running and hurt and and and
136. 8:22crying it just like yesterday you know
137. 8:26and so uh I pray that God gave me
138. 8:30strength and mercy and help me to
139. 8:34overcome of that bad
140. 8:37memory but I can learn from that I can
141. 8:40talk about that so my point is when I
142. 8:44talk about that I can help people to
143. 8:48learn what happening in the history and
144. 8:53prevent something that happening again
145. 8:56and so I fulfill a about my dream that
146. 9:01helping people that is a point that is
147. 9:03my purpose because I growing up after to
148. 9:08the the the time in the
149. 9:11hospital the all the doctors and
150. 9:14nurses they they were so wonderful
151. 9:18people they inspired me and I it's from
152. 9:22that buil up in my mind in my heart I
153. 9:27wanted to become a doctor
154. 9:30I just want to help people like they
155. 9:33they are helping me now and so that's I
156. 9:37had a dream and I want to make my dream
157. 9:42big by trying to study very hard by
158. 9:47myself and then of course the my family
159. 9:51helping me a lot they just let me study
160. 9:55not doing anything else but I never take
161. 9:58ADV advantage and I focus on study study
162. 10:02and that is a dream to help people still
163. 10:07uh I really always say keep my dream
164. 10:12still alive and so I can do something
165. 10:16else instead of doctor because I
166. 10:19couldn't being a doctor anymore so I
167. 10:22still fulfill my dream as helping people
168. 10:27and for me helping
169. 10:29people but I have to help
170. 10:32myself all the the point that all the
171. 10:36nightmare or or trauma I have to help
172. 10:41myself to be above of that yeah you get
173. 10:45it above of that not leaving with that
174. 10:49and so Inside by God help I I just be
175. 10:56strong insight and I can help continue
176. 10:59daily life I can help others and right
177. 11:03now I I travel and help children and
178. 11:08people
179. 11:10teenager I can
180. 11:12see anyone when they face with
181. 11:16tragedy they have the same thing
182. 11:19nightmare trauma most of the people they
183. 11:23do and I had been there and I know how
184. 11:27hard it was for me to deal with it and
185. 11:32so that's why I suffer with that
186. 11:36physical mentally
187. 11:39emotionally outside and inside
188. 11:41everything so now I'm so
189. 11:44thankful I can over that state so I can
190. 11:50give that my pres my life I can give
191. 11:54hope to people look that little girl she
192. 11:59can learn and you can learn that you
193. 12:02know yeah that is how I have to deal
194. 12:06with nare and Trauma and now no longer I
195. 12:11don't have I don't have anymore trauma
196. 12:15and and um and a nightmare anymore I
197. 12:20conquered
198. 12:21them thank God for that when was the
199. 12:24last time you had a nightmare was it
200. 12:26several years ago oh it's long long time
201. 12:30ago I didn't have yes yes I I overcome
202. 12:35of that because I work on that I'm not
203. 12:38just let uh let it be never be healed
204. 12:43but I have to work on that yeah you you
205. 12:46mentioned the burns they still hurt and
206. 12:49are
207. 12:50painful yes um this is like my situation
208. 12:54right now uh I had been um uh
209. 12:5913 laser treatment uh with Dr GI wo in
210. 13:05Miami uh those laser treatment is helped
211. 13:10me uh reduce the pain like before that I
212. 13:16have about eight nine 10 out of 10 but
213. 13:21now I still have like three four five
214. 13:24out of 10 and I can manage that you know
215. 13:28it's it's a
216. 13:29Miracle but for the pain free not yet
217. 13:35yeah do you is that something that can
218. 13:37be possible you think
219. 13:39or yes I have hope I always have hope
220. 13:44yeah that it will change yes that
221. 13:47because before you see how many years I
222. 13:51deal with the pain uh it it it is almost
223. 13:56every time when the weather change
224. 13:59or I just uh UNS sudden move and oh the
225. 14:05pain it came to me it's like sometime
226. 14:09unbearable and I pray I'm ready God Lord
227. 14:14take me home I understand but I I said
228. 14:19if you still let me be here in this
229. 14:22earth just do a miracle for me so my
230. 14:26pain I can manage that I can
231. 14:32motivated yes you know I say yeah you
232. 14:36mention God many times and it seems God
233. 14:42is integral like really a part of your
234. 14:44healing Journey how did you come to know
235. 14:47God were did you know him as a child or
236. 14:49was it after Vietnam
237. 14:52or yes that is a good thing uh I was
238. 14:57raised in the how
239. 14:59religion that created in Vietnam in
240. 15:051925 uh so it's very strong
241. 15:10um I I was in the four generation of
242. 15:15cowd Faith um
243. 15:18so uh when I got cow D Faith uh yes uh
244. 15:25you can Google it c a o one word cow and
245. 15:30a second word d a i c die it it mean
246. 15:36like they mix all the religion together
247. 15:41okay yeah and I was so high devoted in
248. 15:45that religion because uh when I got born
249. 15:51I became really underprivileged child I
250. 15:56and I learned that they they just say I
251. 15:58have to s of that because the the the
252. 16:01LIE before I was so
253. 16:03mean and this lie I have to suffer I
254. 16:06said no
255. 16:08way and because of that I thought now
256. 16:12this life I have to be good
257. 16:16uh do all the best I could and in order
258. 16:20next life I become the better
259. 16:24life you know and then uh anyway
260. 16:29uh in my heart I even a
261. 16:32child growing up as a teenager I never
262. 16:37thought bad words in order to speak it
263. 16:41out from my mouth no that's I mean I
264. 16:45have to do a good good good work good
265. 16:49mind and good heart in order I will
266. 16:52receive a good thing but you know when I
267. 16:56was 19
268. 16:59I got into medicine
269. 17:02school and then the Vietnamese
270. 17:05government uh ReDiscover me as I was
271. 17:11that little girl in the famous picture
272. 17:15so another
273. 17:18trusty came to me again and it's a long
274. 17:22story but I couldn't go to school I was
275. 17:26under control and uh
276. 17:29my dream had been cut my study my future
277. 17:34nothing and I say why me
278. 17:37again it it's a really a low point in my
279. 17:41life and was it because of the fame you
280. 17:45couldn't you were it was too much okay
281. 17:49yeah because I was that little girl yeah
282. 17:53the famous picture and so the government
283. 17:57wanted me to be with them for filming
284. 18:01for interviewing over the world you know
285. 18:05and that interrupt my school and that as
286. 18:09the
287. 18:10nature you cannot imagine what happened
288. 18:14to me it was a very low point in my
289. 18:19life I just want to to study but I
290. 18:25couldn't and even I Tred my best has to
291. 18:29be a good person but in my heart I say I
292. 18:33hated it you know I couldn't deal with
293. 18:37the hatred bitterness and anger by me
294. 18:42and at that moment I doubt about God
295. 18:46where are you do you exist why you
296. 18:50didn't listen my
297. 18:52prayer why that happened to me and I
298. 18:56wanted the day and night
299. 18:59it I suffer so much about
300. 19:04physically and emotionally and
301. 19:08spiritually all of that
302. 19:12and I'm so thankful that God not
303. 19:16finished with me yet
304. 19:20it's inside of me at that time I say I
305. 19:25wanted to take my life but it's so hard
306. 19:29to do that but how can I deal with a big
307. 19:34load over my
308. 19:36shoulders I'm just a little
309. 19:39girl I couldn't do anything why they
310. 19:42treat me like that why would that happen
311. 19:46I just asked what the purpose in my life
312. 19:50why I didn't die when the four naal
313. 19:52bombs drop on
314. 19:55me why I have to suffer again in again
315. 19:59all the
316. 20:02question in me one thing I had it
317. 20:10searching looking for
318. 20:12learning so because I couldn't go to
319. 20:15school anymore I just dig into the
320. 20:21library to read all the religious
321. 20:25books and among all the books I read the
322. 20:30New Testament and of course I didn't
323. 20:33know anything about Christianity I know
324. 20:37from My Religion gai that they have
325. 20:41Jesus Christ in in that they worship
326. 20:45Jesus only one day in a year December
327. 20:5125th Christmas all Christmas all the
328. 20:56people go to the the the the the temple
329. 20:59and worship Jesus Christ for one day
330. 21:03that's all I know and then when in the
331. 21:06library I read the New Testament in
332. 21:11Vietnamese of course in Saigon at that
333. 21:14time so the more I read the more
334. 21:18question I
335. 21:20had when I read
336. 21:23into uh John
337. 21:26146 when Jesus say I am the way the true
338. 21:31and the life no man can come to the
339. 21:33father but by me I say what I really
340. 21:39confused why Jesus say that why my
341. 21:42religion say different totally different
342. 21:46and which was
343. 21:48true and of course that I just say the
344. 21:51more I read the more question I had and
345. 21:53I have no idea at that moment no one can
346. 21:57explain to me
347. 21:59but it's a long story but then um my
348. 22:03brother in-law has a cousin and he is he
349. 22:09was a Christian so he came to visit my
350. 22:12my sister family at that time I was with
351. 22:15them and my my niece my nephews told me
352. 22:21oh he's a Christian my uncle is a a
353. 22:24Christian so you can have uh the chance
354. 22:28to ask him so many question that you
355. 22:30have and I did I asked him and he
356. 22:33started to talk about Christianity about
357. 22:37Jesus and about God God is love is love
358. 22:43but I say wait a minute you say God is
359. 22:47love but why he allowed me to suffer
360. 22:50that much I was a little girl I didn't
361. 22:54do anything wrong why I suffer until now
362. 22:58I still suffering what I did nothing
363. 23:03wrong and he he he couldn't convince me
364. 23:07convince me convince convince me and
365. 23:11then okay he invited me to the church to
366. 23:16to to learn more about Christianity and
367. 23:20I'm glad I went and then I went uh I I
368. 23:26at that time I really want to have a
369. 23:30friend that can I can uh talk to and I
370. 23:34can uh share with uh my burden inside
371. 23:41then
372. 23:43anyway I went to church and then one day
373. 23:47I remember I just try God I just uh sit
374. 23:52in the backyard of my my my sister
375. 23:56family uh and with all my heart with all
376. 24:00my voice with with everything all my
377. 24:03soul I just look up at the sky and I
378. 24:07yelling
379. 24:09out God are you
380. 24:13real God do you exist somewhere please
381. 24:17help me I need
382. 24:19it someone I need a friend you know and
383. 24:25um
384. 24:29all that night on Saturday
385. 24:32night I
386. 24:34just focus on pray God if you real give
387. 24:39me friend tomorrow I went to church and
388. 24:43I will find I I couldn't have any friend
389. 24:47to talk and then I just picture in my
390. 24:51mind okay the picture it was if I can
391. 24:55find the the lady sit down in the middle
392. 24:59of the
393. 25:00auditorium she will be my friend sit
394. 25:03down
395. 25:04alone tomorrow if God you are real you
396. 25:08just answer my prayer and then next
397. 25:12morning on Sunday morning I woke up
398. 25:16earlier and I walk from my family's uh
399. 25:20sister house to my uh to the church and
400. 25:25I walking in I saw somebody just
401. 25:28prepared the service and then the main
402. 25:31door opened it and I saw the lady sit
403. 25:36out in the middle of Auditorium and she
404. 25:41just that I have no idea what she doing
405. 25:44because my religion Cai worship is
406. 25:47different way we bounding and bounding
407. 25:50not sit down and close your eyes like I
408. 25:54was so scared and then I just thought
409. 25:58oh maybe she's a ghost you know because
410. 26:04in my relation talking about ghost all
411. 26:07the time and it's oh I was so scared but
412. 26:10then I come my me
413. 26:14doubt and I say that didn't you pray for
414. 26:17Kim and then I just you know timidly
415. 26:21walking slowly quietly closer to her I
416. 26:26would like to to to ask
417. 26:28her why you are here alone but then I
418. 26:33turn to like you not very close to her
419. 26:37but it's just about close to her and she
420. 26:41looked up she gave me beautiful smile
421. 26:45and she asked me to sit here and in my
422. 26:48heart just raise up my
423. 26:51bit so scared and when she gave me
424. 26:55invitation I say oh she knows ghost
425. 27:00and then yes I sat I sat nearby her and
426. 27:04I found her name three and then she
427. 27:07older than me seven years old or six
428. 27:10years old and I call her older sister
429. 27:14right and and
430. 27:16then uh I uh I really want to to
431. 27:21find uh what what the reason why she's
432. 27:25here and I asked her she saying I came
433. 27:29here
434. 27:30early because I want to pray for my mom
435. 27:33she's is very sick and I said wow it's
436. 27:40somehow God is there but I didn't know
437. 27:44bow he open he revealed to me I am here
438. 27:50and now I learned that after that we
439. 27:53became a good friend and I didn't want
440. 27:57her
441. 27:59in trouble with the government right
442. 28:02because the government watching me and
443. 28:04they watching all people around me who I
444. 28:07can make a
445. 28:09friend influenced uh at that time for me
446. 28:12and then I I just didn't want her in
447. 28:15trouble I just waiting until the service
448. 28:19I can come to talk with her and then we
449. 28:22we didn't have any time uh long time
450. 28:26outside just in the church church and I
451. 28:29went to church because two reason I have
452. 28:33a friend and my Curious uh
453. 28:38curiosity I months and months and months
454. 28:42I said wow somehow she started to pray
455. 28:46for me and then
456. 28:49um and then uh in Christmas time when
457. 28:53the pastor talking about why we
458. 28:57celebrate ch
459. 28:58Christmas Even in Saigon even in Vietnam
460. 29:03but over the world and so because of
461. 29:08baby Jesus came to the world and then
462. 29:11later he died on the cross to pay for
463. 29:15our
464. 29:16sin if
465. 29:19anyone open his heart to Jesus and then
466. 29:25Jesus will come to his heart
467. 29:29bringing te and take away any
468. 29:33burden wow I say wait a minute I just
469. 29:38spoke to me that that person is me I
470. 29:42needed peace I needed someone come into
471. 29:47my life take away my
472. 29:50burden and then wow at that moment my
473. 29:54heart said yes you need it and I came to
474. 29:58the altor and I just open my heart
475. 30:02accept Jesus Christ as my personal
476. 30:05Savior and of course after that you know
477. 30:08it's an amazing turning point in my life
478. 30:12at a 19 years old at that time in the
479. 30:16middle of
480. 30:19nowhere that I could turn around to have
481. 30:23hope to have peace to have
482. 30:26joy all the darkness
483. 30:30so that moment I started to break God
484. 30:34through Jesus name and that my faith the
485. 30:38more I pray the more peace I have God is
486. 30:41so real to me of course all the gods
487. 30:45that I've worshiped before I stop I just
488. 30:51respect them but not worship that is
489. 30:55totally different so that is my faith
490. 30:59and my strength and my hope it turned my
491. 31:04life around from Darkness to light and
492. 31:08it transformed me from
493. 31:11hatreds to forgive from
494. 31:14Love from hate to love and and
495. 31:19everything I just started to wor trust
496. 31:22and Obey and the miracle
497. 31:25happened in my life is Miracle one to
498. 31:30another and you know with the with the
499. 31:34idea I se I got
500. 31:38burned I deal with the very ugly scars
501. 31:43and the pain
502. 31:46both so became 10 11 12 teenager growing
503. 31:53up daily I never thought one day
504. 31:59I have a
505. 32:01boyfriend get married and have the
506. 32:06normal family never think about that
507. 32:10never thought about that but you see
508. 32:13when I pray and God bless
509. 32:17me finally I have a wonderful of course
510. 32:22boyfriend and then get married and then
511. 32:26family now I have two boys and I adopted
512. 32:31one girl we have nine grandchildren
513. 32:36now wow you can see even now my
514. 32:43husband I after 32 years I still call
515. 32:47him my angel on
516. 32:50Earth we never
517. 32:52fight because I I treasure and my heart
518. 32:58so thankful those Miracle those blessing
519. 33:03come upon my life and never take it for
520. 33:07granted I treasure that every minute of
521. 33:11my life and so that that you can see
522. 33:15living with the humble heart with
523. 33:18thankful
524. 33:19heart you have everything you know you
525. 33:23don't have to be so much money money is
526. 33:28not yes we need
527. 33:31money absolutely don't misunderstand me
528. 33:34we need money but when you have much
529. 33:38money became rich is the trouble come
530. 33:42along you can see the the people leing
531. 33:45around and I don't have we live very
532. 33:49humble but completely with peace and joy
533. 33:54and full of Hope and that is Chang CH me
534. 33:58from the ash to the beauty because of my
535. 34:06faith you know Kim I want to thank you
536. 34:08for sharing that I mean that's such an
537. 34:10encouraging and true story um I was
538. 34:14going to
539. 34:15say I know with your foundation you have
540. 34:18seen and helped so many children who
541. 34:22were like you like you so what did you
542. 34:27for you was there a special memory or
543. 34:30moment you remember when you met a child
544. 34:33that reminded you of yourself and you
545. 34:37got to speak into that child's life in
546. 34:39that moment do you have a memory like
547. 34:42that of course of course yes it's it's
548. 34:48a yes I really want to get back I want
549. 34:52to help people and now I
550. 34:56understand more than everyone because I
551. 34:59I experiences about the pain the about
552. 35:03everything as a child facing with
553. 35:06tragedy young or
554. 35:09adult okay so I have a wonderful a story
555. 35:13that I tell
556. 35:15you um she not a child but but you you
557. 35:21you have to understand that I have that
558. 35:26impress that I got burn so I have the
559. 35:29pain all the time so when I see the
560. 35:33people get burned like me is a really
561. 35:37that my
562. 35:39weakness I I don't want to to let that
563. 35:45memory bring me back and take away my my
564. 35:51reality because some I'm human you
565. 35:55know when they invited to get into the
566. 35:59Burn
567. 36:01Unit I have to fight said Laura help me
568. 36:05because that is my weakness I don't want
569. 36:08to see anyone to suffer like me
570. 36:11especially for
571. 36:13burn but everyone just encouraged me to
572. 36:16go go go because you need it we need it
573. 36:21and then okay I just put all the gout
574. 36:25over me and then get in to burn unic the
575. 36:29first the first child that I saw is
576. 36:32named
577. 36:33innocent and uh he three years old the
578. 36:38mother sit down nearby and in Uganda is
579. 36:43you know like all the the the burn most
580. 36:47of thing they they threw the the fire or
581. 36:52acid to burn and as a he just Li down It
582. 36:57Make Me Remember myself and the
583. 37:01mother it it just so hard for me and the
584. 37:04next door is a story the next
585. 37:08door the the the adult not a
586. 37:13child she got burned by
587. 37:18her husband through the
588. 37:21AIS uh because
589. 37:23she uh she she somehow she
590. 37:28she that has happened you know and she
591. 37:32wanted to take her life she stopped
592. 37:36drinking
593. 37:38eating
594. 37:41and it was so hard for the nurse and the
595. 37:45Doctor Who was around her to encourage
596. 37:50her and take care of her but because in
597. 37:53my mind in her mind you know just I
598. 37:57wanted di it yeah like she had no hope
599. 38:01and then but she she she got burned
600. 38:05terrible burn even her face but her eyes
601. 38:09you can
602. 38:10see then uh I have and I'm sorry Kim you
603. 38:14said she was burned
604. 38:17how uh her husband through the exit over
605. 38:22her and she got burned on purpose on
606. 38:26purpose yeah okay yeah and then um
607. 38:31almost the nurse give up but try their
608. 38:36best you know but then I came I remember
609. 38:40that I have a
610. 38:42picture I talk with her and I I say very
611. 38:47simple I am that little girl and I show
612. 38:52her my scars over my back my arm and you
613. 38:59see as a little girl I saw I show her my
614. 39:04picture she look at that just be quiet
615. 39:07just just quiet just look at that and
616. 39:09then I talk and talk for 10
617. 39:13minutes I say can I pray for you I that
618. 39:17little girl have hope now I here I'm
619. 39:22here I I can talk with you I understand
620. 39:25your
621. 39:27all that I I I can say um and I offer
622. 39:33her my prayer and the nurse need pray
623. 39:38over her so she just take it in but she
624. 39:43not at that moment not react
625. 39:46anything but then after prayer I
626. 39:51left right what happened the nurse
627. 39:54called us called me and wow K you gave
628. 39:59her hope because after that she stood up
629. 40:03she walked in the hole of the clinic and
630. 40:07she changed her attitude eating and
631. 40:11drinking no more the same like situation
632. 40:15before wow and she Tri to change her
633. 40:19life because your picture because you're
634. 40:24suffering and she saw you as a real
635. 40:29person and then you
636. 40:32see that is a deep memory for me I can
637. 40:36give hope to people who just
638. 40:40suffer like that I'm so thankful to be
639. 40:45alive I mean your story it's just it's
640. 40:48amazing because scripture does say
641. 40:52beauty from ashes you said that before
642. 40:55and getting to see
643. 40:57your pain your
644. 40:59struggle that you experienced and then
645. 41:03the Lord bringing you to a place where
646. 41:04that pain and struggle is now a tool for
647. 41:07you to use to talk to people and to
648. 41:09encourage them and to tell them about
649. 41:11Christ and so what was so
650. 41:14painful while still having those
651. 41:16triggers that you were talking about and
652. 41:18those difficulties is actually something
653. 41:20that you are Greatful for as opposed to
654. 41:23hating and that is such a powerful story
655. 41:26and I think that if FF so many people
656. 41:28cuz
657. 41:29there's you know we were talking about
658. 41:31this earlier but we don't live really in
659. 41:34a culture of gratitude you know we if
660. 41:37something's bothering us we get rid of
661. 41:39it or if it's not makes us comfortable
662. 41:42we don't do it you know there's a lot
663. 41:45of um there isn't a culture of
664. 41:49resilience or you know pursuing and
665. 41:53perseverance um and gratitude especially
666. 41:57is not something
667. 41:59that we look at at all um but Kim you
668. 42:03know I want to ask one last question I
669. 42:05want to be respectful of your time and I
670. 42:07know you have a lot to do
671. 42:10um you know
672. 42:13what
673. 42:22um if you were to
674. 42:27pick one word to describe your life from
675. 42:32the time you were in Vietnam to now you
676. 42:38know only one word that you could choose
677. 42:39what do you think you would
678. 42:43pick in
679. 42:45Vietnam one
680. 42:48word I can say one word
681. 42:53victim victim and now
682. 42:58here as a life I can
683. 43:01say
684. 43:04grace or
685. 43:06Victory by Grace but it's more worse is
686. 43:11it victory that uh I'm so thankful for
687. 43:16that well from victim to Victor right
