- 0:00Press your thumb against your little
- 0:01finger and bend your wrist slightly
- 0:03forward. If a thin cord rises in the
- 0:06middle of your wrist, you have a palmis
- 0:08longus.
- 0:10About one in seven people don't.
- 0:13This forearm muscle runs from the elbow
- 0:15to the palm. And in primates that climb
- 0:18and hang from branches, it helps tighten
- 0:20the grip. In humans, it adds almost
- 0:23nothing. People born without it grip
- 0:26just as hard as everyone else. That is
- 0:29exactly what makes it valuable to
- 0:31surgeons. When a torn tendon or ligament
- 0:34in the hand or elbow needs replacing,
- 0:37they can remove the palmis longus
- 0:39through a small cut and use it as a
- 0:41graft with almost no loss to the hand. A
- 0:44leftover from our climbing past, still
- 0:47finding a use.
