- 0:00impact of influence the murloc family
- 0:03murders this is the unfolding story of a
- 0:05powerful South Carolina family the
- 0:07mysterious deaths they are linked to and
- 0:10our quest to bring you the truth
- 0:15hello friend

- 0:27for well over a year now and it's been
- 0:31great that a lot of you have hung with
- 0:33us some of you
- 0:34are new and we love it that you're
- 0:37taking time to spend with us

- 0:45you can reach out to us on Murdoch
- 0:48podcast Facebook
- 0:49murlocpodcast.com Matt Harris podcast
- 0:54gmail.com and we're cranking out the
- 0:57podcast
- 0:58a little quicker than we normally do a
- 1:00lot quicker usually it's about once a
- 1:03week over the last year and months uh
- 1:07Seton has been in
- 1:09the thicker things in Walterboro for the
- 1:13trial uh Seton good morning good day
- 1:17good afternoon whatever we're in I don't
- 1:20know what time is it's been a really
- 1:21crazy busy week I know it right I know
- 1:24it and I've been trying to be on court
- 1:26TV and Technical problems both times and
- 1:28I've
- 1:29punched myself in the face like eight
- 1:31times but
- 1:33it's good it's good and we're gonna I'm
- 1:34gonna be down uh in Walterboro next week
- 1:37along with you for some of the days so
- 1:40let's begin kind of where we left off in
- 1:44the podcast that we did I believe on
- 1:46Wednesday and we're recording this on
- 1:48Friday so we would start with
- 1:51day four
- 1:52is when uh the the Witnesses are
- 1:56starting to be called and
- 1:59is it let's start with the the the the
- 2:01scene is it starting to get a little
- 2:03more crowded now are there a lot more
- 2:05people showing up that are members of
- 2:07the community are there more reporters
- 2:09showing up what's the deal
- 2:11well I would say
- 2:12day four Thursday was actually not that
- 2:16much different from other days there
- 2:17were a few members of the public but
- 2:19today is Friday and
- 2:21day five we have actually there were
- 2:24more people and I talked to the court
- 2:26staff and they said that they are
- 2:28allowing 60 members of the general
- 2:29public to come in and it's basically
- 2:32first come first served and I asked them
- 2:35if they were full today and they said
- 2:37they were close to being full so but
- 2:38this was the first day that I actually
- 2:40saw more of a crowd okay we're going to
- 2:45break this down what would be day four
- 2:48and day five parts of those and we
- 2:50combine the two
- 2:52so if you've not been following along we
- 2:55just it's easier because some things on
- 2:57one day relate to another day so this is
- 2:59kind of a wrap of the two days into one
- 3:01just to let everyone know how this is
- 3:03how we're going to talk about this and I
- 3:05would think it's similar to how if a
- 3:07jury broke right now how they would all
- 3:09talk about it kind of thing and we're
- 3:11also I want to point out
- 3:13that we're both kind of looking at as
- 3:15what would we think if we were on the
- 3:18jury right see like we're not experts in
- 3:21a lot of this stuff
- 3:22no absolutely as I am listening I am
- 3:25trying to listen as if I was a juror
- 3:28like I am keeping an open mind I'm
- 3:30listening to both sides I'm no expert in
- 3:33anything I am just a regular person
- 3:35living in South Carolina so that's how I
- 3:37am approaching this and
- 3:40we are
- 3:41going to Banter back and forth we don't
- 3:45we don't script this out
- 3:47like we think that a lot of people would
- 3:49be sitting at home except we the one
- 3:51difference is we've been on this story
- 3:53for
- 3:54whatever it is you since uh June of 2021
- 3:57okay so combining the last few days
- 4:00we the the body cam footage was shown
- 4:03which was interesting because you see
- 4:04Alec and his reaction also they played
- 4:07the 9-1-1 call
- 4:10unredacted
- 4:12so the things that were redacted
- 4:14what popped out to you uh Seton
- 4:19the first thing that popped out to me
- 4:21was the fact that he is immediately
- 4:26bringing up this
- 4:27threats that Paul has been receiving in
- 4:30relation to the boating accident and
- 4:31again it's the first time anybody's
- 4:33heard this well the public has heard
- 4:34this entire call uh when the 911
- 4:37dispatcher asked Murdoch if Maggie and
- 4:40Paul shot themselves he replied oh no
- 4:42hell no and he went on to say that both
- 4:47victims were shot in the head
- 4:49there's blood everywhere
- 4:50it says I can see his brains which is
- 4:53horrible and it mentions a hole in
- 4:55Maggie's head which is horrifying I
- 4:58understand now why that was
- 5:00redacted because that is potentially uh
- 5:04evidence
- 5:05that a killer if there's another it is
- 5:08not him uh wouldn't not know
- 5:13but my question is some of the
- 5:15information that was redacted I'm
- 5:17questioning why it was redacted I don't
- 5:19know why the fact that he was
- 5:22questioning this boating accident why
- 5:25would they possibly redact that that
- 5:27seems odd to me the only thing I can
- 5:29think of
- 5:31is you don't want to make the anybody
- 5:35involved in the voting look like a
- 5:37suspect unnecessarily
- 5:40well that's true that's what I that's my
- 5:42theory uh you know that that's that's
- 5:44what I'm going with
- 5:46there is also a timeline issue
- 5:50in this 9-1-1 call
- 5:52Murdoch told the dispatcher last time he
- 5:54had talked his wife was roughly two
- 5:55hours before and that he wasn't at the
- 5:58crime scene at the time of the killings
- 6:00prosecutors said at the beginning of the
- 6:01trial they had cell phone evidence they
- 6:03put Murdoch at the scene
- 6:06with victims and that's much closer
- 6:09than a two hours because this calls at
- 6:12100 five or six
- 6:14and eight forty four is the video so
- 6:18that's an hour
- 6:20and and 20 minutes or something
- 6:22I mean timeline is going to be huge with
- 6:25this because
- 6:27that was also seemed to be the biggest
- 6:30thing that stuck out with me with the
- 6:32sled interview was
- 6:34when he was questioned about the last
- 6:36time he saw Maggie and Paul he mentions
- 6:39about riding around with Paul
- 6:42on around the property they there's
- 6:45allegedly a video well we should
- 6:48hopefully see this
- 6:50but he doesn't mention being at the
- 6:52kennels with Maggie and Paul
- 6:55and yet we know he was at 844 because
- 6:57the video that's coming out
- 6:59uh Lisa at least that's what I assume is
- 7:01in the video we haven't seen it yet I
- 7:03think inconsistency with timelines and
- 7:06what he said that's that's going to be a
- 7:09theme yes it is however let's let's just
- 7:12Yap about that timeline for a second
- 7:14Maggie's cell phone was dead at 8 54.
- 7:17and Paul's phone was 849 with 849. so
- 7:21you have to assume she's killed before
- 7:23854 and the video the the video is 8 44
- 7:27to 8 45 so let's say 8 45 but he's not
- 7:31leaving the bodies or or the phone
- 7:33unless he takes Maggie's phone with him
- 7:34but 849 Paul's phone turns off 9060
- 7:38starts his truck so no matter how you
- 7:40look at it even if he kills them both at
- 7:418 49
- 7:43it's 17 minutes until he gets in the
- 7:44truck and leaves no matter what he said
- 7:46about where he was and where he wasn't
- 7:48that's that's the timeline but why would
- 7:51he not be because we learned later when
- 7:54we listened to the sled interview which
- 7:56came up on day five
- 7:58he doesn't tell the officer about being
- 8:01at the kennels he says he takes a snap
- 8:04which is what was originally reported he
- 8:07tooks the snap and then he went to go
- 8:08check on his mother who suffers from
- 8:11dementia but why wouldn't he tell people
- 8:13why wasn't hatred cool about us he says
- 8:16he gets up from the nap and doesn't see
- 8:18any of them from the nap until the time
- 8:21he gets in the car yes possibly he was
- 8:23in shock I don't know but that issue I
- 8:27think as as a mind of a juror I'd be
- 8:29like wait a second why wouldn't you say
- 8:31that you were at the the kennels with
- 8:33your wife and son why would you say
- 8:35you took the snap and then immediately
- 8:37woke up and went to go check on your
- 8:39mother
- 8:40if you want to dig even deeper into it
- 8:42if I want to he says he took the nap he
- 8:45called him he couldn't find him didn't
- 8:46know where they were but when he comes
- 8:48home that night at 10 0 four or five
- 8:52he says uh they weren't there so the
- 8:55first thing I thought they must be over
- 8:56at the dog kennels well
- 8:59it's not that far away if you wanted to
- 9:01get a hold of them
- 9:02when you got up from your nap
- 9:04you go to the dog kennels it's always a
- 9:06stone's throw away what
- 9:09it seems like they would actually take a
- 9:12vehicle over to yeah it does seem weird
- 9:14to the kennels I mean it I don't think
- 9:17they typically walk there I think they
- 9:19they would take a vehicle to that area
- 9:21well they were saying they did it or
- 9:23thought they would do it one of the one
- 9:24of the officers because of the rain
- 9:27that they they wouldn't take a nice
- 9:29stroll through the rain okay another you
- 9:31know what we're sticking with a problem
- 9:33for Alec is the fact that he tells in
- 9:37the nine one does the 911 operator he
- 9:39checked for the policy tells the
- 9:41officers that show up as well yet it's a
- 9:43very very bloody scene and there doesn't
- 9:45appear to be much blood on Alec and he
- 9:49actually he told the officers that he
- 9:52attempted to roll Paul over to see it I
- 9:57guess to check for a pulse and his arms
- 9:59were his body was face down I guess his
- 10:02arms were under him and when I was on
- 10:04court TV with uh Vinnie politan he was
- 10:07talking about a story or a case that he
- 10:09had when he was a prosecutor in New York
- 10:11and there was a rabbi
- 10:12the somebody was murdered family member
- 10:15and he won this case he thinks mainly
- 10:19because
- 10:21there was no blood on the rabbi the
- 10:22rabbi said he tried to help them there
- 10:23was no blood and that the jury really
- 10:25ate that up interesting note by
- 10:28buddy Vinnie
- 10:30that really seemed to be a big theme in
- 10:34the courtroom today because they're
- 10:36talking about else clothing the night of
- 10:40the accident the officers described it
- 10:43as clean they don't see any evidence of
- 10:45blood and
- 10:48they're both kind of taking it in
- 10:50different ways the prosecution is saying
- 10:54he clearly changed he clearly
- 10:57cleaned up
- 10:58the defense is saying well he doesn't
- 11:00look like someone who just shot his son
- 11:03in the head at close proximity there's
- 11:06that but they're also the other thing
- 11:09they're kind of they're hinting at and I
- 11:11think it's going to come out in days to
- 11:12come is that
- 11:15allowed his whole property to be
- 11:19searched they allowed the house and
- 11:20maybe the police didn't do their job
- 11:22properly searching the house and the
- 11:25house that becomes goes back to our
- 11:27conversation
- 11:28with you and talks with family members
- 11:31that the family was in the house the
- 11:33night of those murders they were allowed
- 11:36back in yeah we haven't heard about a
- 11:38bunch of bagged clothes or bagged shoes
- 11:40other than ones elect wore and you would
- 11:43think
- 11:44you're going to grab everything you can
- 11:45find right definitely and we're hearing
- 11:48now in this video where where Paul and
- 11:51Alec were riding around the property
- 11:53ellic is not wearing the same clothes
- 11:55that he is pictured in in the dash cam
- 11:58videos this white T-shirt and these
- 12:00greenish khaki shorts that would be a
- 12:04big win for the prosecution for sure so
- 12:08where are these clothes are they we just
- 12:10don't know yet are they out there were
- 12:12they collected or were was where they
- 12:14never searched for as just a person of
- 12:17the general population I'm listening to
- 12:20all this but I'm also thinking the
- 12:22defense's job is to pick apart every
- 12:25single little thing that the prosecution
- 12:27is doing like for example they are
- 12:29talking about maybe they're not wearing
- 12:31foot coverings while they're walking
- 12:34around the crime scene but we hear from
- 12:37a sled officer today that says an
- 12:39outdoor crime scene you don't typically
- 12:40put foot protection on I I think the
- 12:43truth is somewhere in the middle and as
- 12:45just I'm trying to just keep it open
- 12:48mind about everything and listen to it
- 12:49all with subjective ears the tire tracks
- 12:53Harpoon was was dwelling on that all
- 12:57with a good point doesn't necessarily
- 12:59mean Alex didn't do it but it does seem
- 13:01like there was a lack of effort
- 13:03to figure out the tire track situation
- 13:06and again it was raining so it didn't it
- 13:09didn't last very long
- 13:11but that seemed to be a point he was
- 13:14driving home that maybe they didn't
- 13:16think about other people
- 13:19would
- 13:20bother me you know these tire tracks and
- 13:23they pointed out yesterday maybe
- 13:24Footprints maybe these things
- 13:27may not have been preserved again I'm
- 13:29still keeping it up in mind maybe they
- 13:31were and we just don't know about it
- 13:32maybe they got ruined so quickly by the
- 13:34rain but didn't have a chance to do much
- 13:36with it the other thing we want to talk
- 13:39about because it was talked about so
- 13:41much
- 13:42the general Vibe the prosecution
- 13:46saying that or trying to show that Alec
- 13:49was not acting as we would think someone
- 13:53who
- 13:54has just come upon their mother and son
- 13:57murder his actions and what he said
- 14:01didn't Jive the defense is saying well
- 14:05it doesn't jive because he was in shock
- 14:07and some of the things he said didn't
- 14:08make any sense like loading the shotgun
- 14:11with the wrong
- 14:12ammunition and he knows better than that
- 14:15right so so that was
- 14:18right how they were going after all the
- 14:20First Responders and and the police
- 14:22officers Etc did you think the same
- 14:24thing I did I mean they were saying that
- 14:26it seemed like Alec was initially trying
- 14:30to shift blame to the boating accident
- 14:32and that it had to be a result of the
- 14:35boating accident because Paul had been
- 14:37receiving threats he had had some
- 14:40physical altercations as a result of it
- 14:42and I don't know I mean it
- 14:45whether he was trying to shift blame or
- 14:48whether he was genuinely concerned that
- 14:51this is what happened
- 14:53there's a moment that the prosecution
- 14:56seized on
- 14:58where that he's talking upset to one of
- 15:01the officers somebody else comes by us
- 15:03and he like changes and goes hey how are
- 15:05you something like that right they
- 15:07pointed that out you know it's that
- 15:10was something that I found interesting
- 15:12that they brought out because to me I
- 15:15think Alec is
- 15:17was raised to just be very polite
- 15:19probably and so him saying that in my
- 15:24mind doesn't really prove guilt or
- 15:26innocence I believe if anyone who cares
- 15:29about my opinion the that it's going to
- 15:31be a confirmation bias thing that if you
- 15:34believe he did it everything is every
- 15:37action he did
- 15:38shows guilt if you don't believe he did
- 15:41it every action shows that he was truly
- 15:44upset and if you are on the fence it
- 15:49probably doesn't sway you either way as
- 15:52doesn't the reaction in the courtroom as
- 15:55they're playing some of these exhibits
- 15:57and and videos where Alec is crying off
- 16:01and on sometimes not sometimes a little
- 16:03sometimes there's not enough tears for
- 16:05people some are there too much tears for
- 16:07people and uh again I think that
- 16:11even if he's crying let's if he is
- 16:13crying and it's a real cry he could be
- 16:15crying because he did it and he's upset
- 16:17he could be crying because he didn't do
- 16:19it I don't think it means diddly do and
- 16:21I think everybody's trying to make a big
- 16:22deal out of it and
- 16:24eight I don't think it matters
- 16:27he did seem genuinely upset you know
- 16:30when I watched from behind since I was
- 16:33in the courtroom you couldn't really see
- 16:34him but I did watch back some of the
- 16:35Court TV stuff and there were actually
- 16:38real tears and again you don't know why
- 16:41the real tears were happening so I don't
- 16:45know
- 16:46what what really to make of that but
- 16:50what I do want to say is looking at the
- 16:53family members behind them you see them
- 16:56comforting each other you see Buster
- 16:59visibly upset you see John Marvin
- 17:02comforting him and this has to be tough
- 17:05on them it has to be really really hard
- 17:07it is worth pointing out that if both
- 17:11his brothers his sister
- 17:13Buster they were there we have to clear
- 17:16something up that Snyder said bespoke on
- 17:21one of our previous
- 17:23episodes a seat and what that that we
- 17:26had talked about
- 17:27they were gone the witness list
- 17:30so he bespoke that they weren't allowed
- 17:33in the courtroom but you've since spoken
- 17:36to him about that so North Carolina and
- 17:38South Carolina laws differ a little bit
- 17:40Buster and John Marvin are considered
- 17:43victims having lost family members so
- 17:46they are allowed to be in the court
- 17:48despite being Witnesses good to
- 17:50straighten that out so speaking of
- 17:52straightening things out let's go to
- 17:55the truck Paul's truck
- 17:57was brought up in
- 18:01the discussion about the vehicles that
- 18:04were at the kennel because Alec at one
- 18:07point mentions he thought Paul would
- 18:10have driven his truck up to the kennels
- 18:12and then we find out it wasn't there and
- 18:15the one Officer says we found that at 10
- 18:18o'clock the next day so people started
- 18:20thinking okay was it stolen was what's
- 18:23the deal on that truck what do you have
- 18:25for Seton
- 18:26um it was all over people thought maybe
- 18:28this was the getaway vehicle but today
- 18:31it was cleared up in court that it
- 18:33appears as if the car broke down so that
- 18:36seems to be
- 18:37not a point of contention and we
- 18:40knew from Utah and John Marvin that Paul
- 18:43was driving
- 18:44John Marvin struck that night yes so we
- 18:47got that one right you nailed it all
- 18:49right you're doing it you're doing great
- 18:51okay so we go to the Friday testimony
- 18:55and we find out that this is I think
- 19:00it's pretty big the the
- 19:02investigator who is uh Laura Rutland the
- 19:07ccso crime scene investigator was on the
- 19:10stand for a long time on Friday and I
- 19:13thought a pretty big thing was was the
- 19:16hair that was found explained Seton
- 19:20it just said that there was they didn't
- 19:22really go into detail but they were they
- 19:24just said that there was brown hairs
- 19:26found in Maggie's hand
- 19:29I thought that was really interesting I
- 19:31I hope we find out more information
- 19:33about this before they tested because if
- 19:36you have hairs in your hand that to me
- 19:38indicates that there could potentially
- 19:39be have been some sort of struggle there
- 19:42should be more about that coming up you
- 19:43would think right
- 19:45um yeah the investigator just said that
- 19:48she did not believe that was that did
- 19:50not indicate a struggle but okay I I
- 19:53wasn't under I was unclear about why she
- 19:55didn't think that I would again like to
- 19:57hear more about this brown hair found in
- 19:59Maggie's hand Seton long week for us all
- 20:04did great we are going to be doing an
- 20:06upcoming bonus episode
- 20:09we are going to be talking about some of
- 20:11the upcoming Witnesses so that is to
- 20:14come also want to give a shout out to a
- 20:17few people who actually came up and
- 20:19spoke to me in Walterboro this week one
- 20:22man came out to me and I've never had
- 20:23anybody recognize me and he he said hey
- 20:27are you seeing Tucker great work and I
- 20:30just because I just have never been
- 20:31recognized I kind of just said oh thank
- 20:34you and just walked away quickly because
- 20:35I was embarrassed I'm a little I'm
- 20:37actually kind of shy most people don't
- 20:39know that about me wait wait wait a
- 20:41second was that guy from Australia by
- 20:43any chance he was not I'm referring to
- 20:46the a couple of Australians who have uh
- 20:49written us about how much they love
- 20:51Seton and that his her husband Len is a
- 20:54Lucky Block
- 20:55um so yeah so he was very nice and and
- 20:59just came up and said he he really liked
- 21:01the work we were doing and also this
- 21:04week Jenny and Kinley came out to me and
- 21:08they spoke to me too so that was really
- 21:10nice I was like I always get shocked
- 21:13when I hear about anybody listening to
- 21:14us yeah I understand we we always say
- 21:17we're just so grateful that this is uh
- 21:20worked out like it has and that you're
- 21:22enjoying it I do want to straighten
- 21:24another thing out Dr Dupree even told me
- 21:27that she bespoke when she did this and I
- 21:29had multiple emails to Matt Harris
- 21:31podcast gmail.com and one of them was
- 21:35from Phil he says uh sorry to you all
- 21:38about the ammunition that goes in the
- 21:39shotgun it's called a shell not a bullet
- 21:42he also says also don't know why Dr
- 21:44Dupree would say it's not recommended to
- 21:47use two shells with different shot size
- 21:49in the same gun it's not a safety hazard
- 21:51because the shells are the same size
- 21:53they just have different size BBS are
- 21:56shot inside them and the gun doesn't
- 21:57know a difference
- 21:59then I got a couple other emails about
- 22:03remember she was talking about it was
- 22:04bird shot and buckshot well apparently
- 22:07in self-defense for home self-defense
- 22:10you will use two different ones uh one
- 22:14to like slow the person down and the
- 22:16other one to finish them off if you will
- 22:19and so it's not that unusual
- 22:22we have received so many comments
- 22:24probably more than anything about that
- 22:26subject but if anyone has watched the
- 22:28Dave Chappelle special he talks about
- 22:31this very thing bird jet buckshot you
- 22:34you sent me this was this on our
- 22:35Facebook page or an email I'm about to
- 22:37read that was a message that was sent
- 22:41through our Facebook page that says hi
- 22:43I've listened to every episode of
- 22:44y'all's podcast and truly enjoy it I
- 22:47found it bothersome in the past when
- 22:48it's been suggested that your podcast
- 22:51quote sides with Alec
- 22:53but tonight's really did feel that way
- 22:55to me which was disappointing even the
- 22:58quote at the end from seton's Dad that
- 22:59the state didn't present any evidence
- 23:00but they gave a time stamp depiction of
- 23:03actual events I'm just confused he has a
- 23:05little disappointed of course I'll
- 23:07continue to listen but hope the
- 23:08narrative doesn't continue this way
- 23:12I I actually always really appreciate
- 23:15feedback and what we've said from the
- 23:17beginning is we're going to point out
- 23:21all sides and
- 23:24I think during this process we're going
- 23:27to see highs from the prosecution we're
- 23:29going to see highs from the defense and
- 23:32I think it's okay to point those both
- 23:33out
- 23:34I agree with you it doesn't we're not
- 23:37saying guilt or innocence when we point
- 23:40these things out
- 23:41we're saying this is how one attorney a
- 23:45very
- 23:46well respected very experienced attorney
- 23:49Saul or how he graded the the opening
- 23:52statements yes and I've seen people
- 23:55having very different opinions on both
- 23:59sides and I think it's going to continue
- 24:01to be this way throughout this process
- 24:03and throughout the year and a half that
- 24:06we've been doing the podcast
- 24:08we've not been giving a lot of opinions
- 24:10we're trying to present
- 24:12the things as they come down and in this
- 24:14case
- 24:15it's going to be a good day for the
- 24:16prosecution a good day for the defense
- 24:19and and people will rate it differently
- 24:21we're just going to try to talk it
- 24:24through like we do and uh we love it
- 24:27though we love it when you write
- 24:30messages to us or emails to us even if
- 24:33you're saying you know that we suck or
- 24:35you disagree with us love it
- 24:37and we encourage everyone to have their
- 24:40own opinion and we're really good with
- 24:42that I think we should wrap and as
- 24:47always we're grateful Matt Harris
- 24:49podcast gmail.com
- 24:51Murdock podcast
- 24:54facebookpodcast.com and if you would
- 24:56make sure you follow the Pod share it
- 24:58and rate it and we will talk soon
