  1. 0:00I tapped my subway card on the way out
  2. 0:01and accidentally charged the fare to my
  3. 0:02wife's linked payment account. I'd
  4. 0:04barely stepped out of the station before
  5. 0:05two officers shoved me to the ground
  6. 0:06telling me I was suspected of embezzling
  7. 0:08company funds. They held me in for a
  8. 0:10full day of interrogation before I
  9. 0:11finally pieced it together. My wife's
  10. 0:12male assistant had reported me. He even
  11. 0:14called me afterward. "Mr. Fox, I'm the
  12. 0:16one who filed the report. Why weren't
  13. 0:17you spending your own money? Why did you
  14. 0:19charge it to Ms. Henson's account? How
  15. 0:20is that any different from stealing? Ms.
  16. 0:22Henson earns every cent with blood,
  17. 0:23sweat, and tears. That money isn't for
  18. 0:25you to blow however you please. Consider
  19. 0:26today a lesson. From now on, I will be
  20. 0:28managing all of your expenses. Every
  21. 0:30single dollar you spend requires a
  22. 0:31formal company request submitted to me.
  23. 0:33You can only use the money once I
  24. 0:34approve it. Oh, and your monthly
  25. 0:35spending cap is $70. You've already
  26. 0:37spent $69.95 today, so don't even think
  27. 0:39about spending another cent this month."
  28. 0:41I listened to him, so serious, so
  29. 0:42pleased with himself, and laughed. The
  30. 0:44kid had been at the company for 6
  31. 0:45months. Just because my wife spoke
  32. 0:46politely to him, he'd started managing
  33. 0:48everything on her behalf, acting like he
  34. 0:50was her personal steward, but he had no
  35. 0:51idea. The company was mine. Every dollar
  36. 0:53in my wife's bank accounts was mine.
  37. 0:54Even his salary came out of my pocket.
  38. 0:56And his precious Ms. Henson was nothing
  39. 0:58more than a Cinderella who'd married up
  40. 0:59into my family. Who gave him the right
  41. 1:01to manage my family's money on my wife's
  42. 1:02behalf? The officers heard every word
  43. 1:04Julius Swanson said through the phone,
  44. 1:05then looked at my screen showing the
  45. 1:06linked payment notification, "Subway
  46. 1:08fare, $1.90." Their faces went dark.
  47. 1:11They offered me a formal apology and
  48. 1:12assured me they would notify my wife's
  49. 1:14company about their employee filing a
  50. 1:15false police report, but I didn't have
  51. 1:17time for any of that. I rushed to the
  52. 1:18hospital. My mother had been scheduled
  53. 1:19for surgery the previous afternoon.
  54. 1:21[clears throat] She needed my signature.
  55. 1:22I never expected to get dragged away the
  56. 1:23second I stepped off the subway. A full
  57. 1:25day and night lost. I didn't dare
  58. 1:26imagine how much her condition might
  59. 1:27have deteriorated. I burst through the
  60. 1:29hospital doors and nearly collided with
  61. 1:31the doctors who grabbed me by the arms.
  62. 1:32"Hurry, Mr. Fox. Sign now so we can prep
  63. 1:34for surgery." I signed as fast as my
  64. 1:36hand could move, then ran to the billing
  65. 1:37counter. I handed over every bank card
  66. 1:39in my wallet. The nurse slid them all
  67. 1:40back across the counter. "Mr. Fox,
  68. 1:42there's nothing in any of these
  69. 1:43accounts." My blood went cold. "That's
  70. 1:44impossible. These cards have tens of
  71. 1:46millions between them at the very least.
  72. 1:48How can there be nothing left?" Julius
  73. 1:49Swanson's words from earlier flashed
  74. 1:51through my mind and it hit me. He must
  75. 1:52have transferred every last cent out of
  76. 1:54my accounts. I I out my phone and called
  77. 1:56my wife. A few rings, then the line
  78. 1:57connected. "Honey, I" but instead of her
  79. 1:59voice, Julia Swanson's impatient tone
  80. 2:01cut through the speaker. "Mr. Fox, are
  81. 2:03you serious right now? Give it a rest.
  82. 2:05So, your spending got restricted. Is
  83. 2:06that really worth running to tattle
  84. 2:07about? Let me save you the trouble.
  85. 2:09Complaining won't change anything. Ms.
  86. 2:10Henson personally told me to rein you
  87. 2:11in." I swallowed the anger clawing up my
  88. 2:13throat. There was no time to argue with
  89. 2:15him. I got straight to the point. "I'm
  90. 2:16at the hospital. I need money. Transfer
  91. 2:18my funds back now, or put my wife on the
  92. 2:20phone. I need to speak with her." His
  93. 2:21voice came back through the line,
  94. 2:22dripping with self-importance. "Ms.
  95. 2:24Henson is busy. She doesn't have time
  96. 2:25for your little problems. She's given me
  97. 2:27full authority to handle this. You need
  98. 2:28money? Sure. Do what I told you. Submit
  99. 2:30a formal company request. Once I approve
  100. 2:32it, the funds will be released. Oh, and
  101. 2:34just a reminder, you've got exactly $1
  102. 2:35left in your monthly allowance. Don't
  103. 2:37bother requesting more than that."
