1:49last year fire broke out at 18 Victory
1:52Road in the house was Mick and marade
1:55Philpot and their six children

2:10window and I seen the fire up the door
2:15it was it was instant I just went I said

2:46caravan another neighbor Daniel
2:49Stevenson was also there trying to get
2:50up to the back windows Mick Philpot was
2:53on the phone in the backyard

3:11bedrooms and when I climbed the ladder I
3:14noticed that the window was smashed and
3:17I tried to shout through the window but
3:18it

3:27was on the top of the Caravan there was
3:29a side window the top of the Caravan
3:30smoke was coming out of there and it was
3:32more smoke than fire you know the smoke

3:48house to rescue the
3:51children I was running around this
3:53kitchen his
3:55Conservatory trying to trying to get in

4:11upstairs trying
4:15get 4 minutes after receiving the first
4:17emergency call the fire crew had arrived
4:20at the front of the
4:22house because of where the fire started
4:24at the foot of the stairs and the fact
4:26the fire spread up the stairs any effect
4:29cut off any um exit route for the
4:32children so essentially anyone up there
4:34was trapped and there was no way they
4:36could get
4:38out once they went into the house they
4:41were met by very thick wall of black
4:43smoke could barely see the hand in front
4:45of the face the smoke had hit the
4:47ceiling on the first floor and and
4:49banked all the way down to almost floor
4:51level at this point the temperature have
4:53been rising as well considerably

4:59just to the top of the stairs there's a
5:01bedroom almost straight in front of you
5:03um that was the first room they went
5:04into and in that room they did find one
5:07child Jade was the first child to be
5:10brought out she was carried down and
5:12laid on the pavement where desperate
5:14attempts were made to revive
5:16her they went into the next room where
5:18they found two more
5:20children one by one her brothers were
5:22brought out and laid side by
5:27side when I come around to the front it
5:29it
5:30was it was like a war zone it was like
5:34whoo you know that's when you realized
5:38how severe and how bad bad it was you've
5:43got Emergency Services Here There and
5:45Everywhere running around it and you got
5:47babies coming
5:50out the six children were rushed to the
5:53Royal Derby hospital but it was too late
5:56to save 10-year-old Jade Mick and Mer's
5:59only daughter daughter and their four
6:00younger Sons John Jack Jesse and
6:045-year-old

6:07Jaden the only surviving child Dwayne
6:10was critically ill he was moved to
6:13Birmingham Children's Hospital where
6:14family and friends
6:17gathered we went in to see
6:20Dwayne and it was just heartbreaking to
6:23see him there fighting for his life
6:29within hours of the fire 18 Victory Road
6:32was declared a crime
6:37scene the Fire Starting behind that
6:39front door two possible causes was
6:42somebody P petrol through the letter box
6:44or has petrol been used from inside the
6:46property to set the fire officers
6:48immediately questioned Lisa Willis mck
6:51philpot's former
6:52mistress she had lived at the house with
6:55Mick and morade but had left with her
6:57five children just 3 months earlier she
7:00was quickly ruled
7:02out the local community struggled to
7:04come to terms with the unfolding
7:08tragedy 2 days after the fire Dwayne
7:11became its sixth
7:17victim the morning we went to see the
7:21children in the mall we met Mick and Mar
7:23raid
7:25outside they asked if we'd go with him
7:28and I said yes
7:30um it's probably one of the worst things
7:32I've ever had to do in my life tore me
7:35apart tore me apart six beautiful little
7:40children just taken away like
7:43that

7:53and Mick Philpot told police that he
7:56wanted to talk to the Press
7:59his main message was that he wanted to
8:01to give this vote of thanks publicly
8:04first of all I want to thank my three
8:06oldest
8:08children could say help us to cut with
8:11what's going off but his behavior that
8:14day concerned and dismayed those
8:16watching myself and jooss I met with
8:19both of them in a private room obviously
8:21to to breathe them and he seemed to come
8:23in very very jovial really very jovial
8:26manner um was though it was some kind of
8:29game it appeared and of course the poor
8:32firen the police the ambulances the
8:35doctors the nurses they did not seem to
8:37be that genuine level of grief uh and
8:41the distraught nature of how people feel
8:44when they've lost a loved one we can't
8:47express our gratitude to everybody the
8:50first things that out of your mouth
8:52should be please help us somebody knows
8:55something it was never ever once
8:58mentioned if that that was me I've been
9:00begging please help me somebody knows
9:04something I've actually been down to my
9:06our our home and what we saw we just we
9:10just cannot believe it there was no
9:13heartfelt appeal for that information to
9:15come in find who's killed my children it
9:19just didn't

9:25to take them out of the room

9:32through some double doors into the
9:33corridor leading to the room we were
9:35using uh I found him collapsed on the
9:38floor um surprisingly I can only

9:51on the floor and within a matter of
9:53probably 10 20 seconds he was back up on
9:56his feet and and into the room laughing
9:58and joking as he was
10:05before two weeks later the couple were
10:07arrested over the deaths of their

10:15the unfolding tragedy as he had his life
10:18in front of the

25:49teenage girlfriend ended their

25:55violence he broke into his girlfriend's
25:58house in the early hours of the morning
26:00and stabbed her repeatedly when her
26:02mother tried to intervene to protect her
26:04she too was
26:06stabbed both women were lucky to escape
26:08with their
26:10lives Mick was convicted of attempted
26:13murder and Grievous bily harm and sent
26:15to
26:16prison the violence that he was
26:19sentenced for in 1978 is an absolute
26:22definite warning of the type of person
26:25that MC Philpot is and how very
26:26dangerous he is especially to the women
26:29in his life if I was a rapist a kid
26:31molester or a mass murderer I'd
26:33understand but I'm not something
26:35happened to me in 1978 which I've
26:36regretted all my life you know I'm still

28:19garden and Heathers described how on
28:21previous time she'd actually just curl
28:22up around the outside toilet until he
28:24was ready to let her back
28:27in but but on this occasion I think
28:29she'd realized that enough was enough
28:31she actually fled from the address she
28:33climbed over the fence to get away from
28:35him and later went to the police station
28:37to report what
28:41happened what followed was a lengthy and
28:43bitter battle for residence of their two
28:46children the court heard how Mick
28:48attempted to discredit Heather to get
28:50what he wanted but he lost and the
28:52children stayed with

28:55Heather within months Mick had started a
28:58sexual relationship with 19-year-old
29:00meray Duffy moving her into the house on
29:02Victory
29:03Road the following year she gave birth
29:06to Jade her first child with

29:14but by the new year his interest had
29:16turned to 17-year-old Lisa
29:20Willis Lisa was a single mom and within
29:23weeks he had invited her to come and
29:25stay I thought it was quite up in with

31:32to get whatever benefits us to get

31:46didn't appear to want to know what
31:48happened to the money and what about the

32:38of behaviors certainly controlling
32:41behaviors like controlling access to
32:44money um isolating women from their
32:47friends and family um
32:50controlling their interaction with the
32:52outside world all of these behaviors
32:55together actually are more Danger
32:57dangerous than consistent
33:01violence Mick was happy believing that
33:03he had everything he wanted with the two
33:05women in his life come on you have you
33:07brushed yours brush your teeth yeah but
33:09Lisa and mared's relationship wasn't
33:11always harmonious and tensions were
33:13creeping into the house on Victory Road
33:15right no no
33:16boys baby they did talk about each other
33:20behind each other's backs um the was
33:23jealous of one
33:24another sometimes sometimes I wish a got
33:28married to mered and that way there
33:30won't be the difference between mered
33:32and Lisa which
33:35unfortunately there is he did suggest
33:39divorcing me to marry Lisa so then Lisa
33:42would have his name
33:43then but I told him I won't divorce
33:47him why not people that have affairs do
33:54that it was always clear to me he felt
33:58more for Lisa than what he did for maade
34:00Lisa at the two of
34:03them seems to have a bit more backbone
34:05and she stood up him
34:08more he's worried about if we're going
34:10to drift apart and drifting apart and
34:12the kids splitting up on that I said
34:14well won't be mind doing if we
34:17do I don't I don't know I mean you have
34:20to wait and see don't you what comes
34:22around the
34:23corner Mick admitted he had preferred
34:25Lisa telling the court that he had
34:27treated her like his Queen but Lisa was
34:30growing increasingly tired of the
34:32relationship and life at 18 Victory Road
34:35he seemed to argue with Lisa more there
34:40was a few times I was there and he said
34:43if you carry on you
34:44can get out and
34:47everything in February last year Lisa
34:49Willis told meray she was taking her
34:51five children to the local swimming pool
34:54she never came back I don't know she she
34:57must have the six cents she always said
34:59that the first one they leave will be
35:02Lisa and she was right and
35:06now the end is
35:09new it was a bit low he just said that
35:11Lisa had left him she T the kids she
35:14weren't coming back you know we started
35:17like filling up with tears over that I
35:20believe because he loved Lisa everybody
35:22knew he love

35:26Lisa he would have
35:28responded maybe in panic but in a
35:31desperate need to get back the control
35:34he felt he had lost maybe in a rage that
35:37she had dared to leave him but certainly
35:41there was always going to be some kind
35:44of exaggerated
35:49[Music]
35:51response there were increasingly bitter
35:53RS between the couple and Lisa went to
35:55the courts to prevent Mick coming near
35:57her
36:00her the last time Mick had to fight for
36:02residence of his children was with
36:04Heather she had won this time around he
36:09was determined that wouldn't be the
36:11case this is a man that'll stop at
36:13nothing to get what he wants it's our
36:15belief that Michael was so Keen to
36:17ensure that nothing was going to stop
36:18him getting those five children that he
36:20started the campaign to try and
36:22discredit
36:23Lisa the police were repeatedly called
36:26as arguments between Lisa and and Mick
36:28escalated Mick claimed that Lisa's
36:30family had made
36:33threats in early April Mick was driving
36:35a group of friends to a dance match when
36:37he took a call he claimed was from
36:41marade Mick comes off the phone and
36:43alleges that somebody's threatened to
36:44firebomb his house different members of
36:47the boss recall it differently which is
36:48understandable it it's you know it's
36:50nearly a year ago now but they're all
36:52clear that he alleges there's some sort
36:53of threat a few weeks later when a
36:56neighbor came over
36:58Mick claimed to have received a
36:59threatening text from Lisa I went around
37:02there 2 weeks like before the fire had
37:04happened and it was just like sort of
37:06clapping his hands oh and I've got an
37:07now and I've got her real lot
37:09threatening to burn my ass up I'll see
37:11her in court I'll soon have my kids
37:13home I believe he's done that in order
37:16to support his actions in the future he
37:19knows what the plan is he knows that
37:20ultimately he's going to set a fire but
37:22he needs to sew the seed in some
37:23people's heads as to who's responsible
37:26Mick was confident that his attempts to
37:28discredit Lisa were succeeding and that
37:30he would soon have the children living
37:32with
37:33him the week leading to the fire he was
37:36telling parents at the school Gates that
37:38he had a plan he was going to get his
37:40children back and in fact he was so
37:42confident that the five children would
37:43be starting school the following
37:45Monday May 11th was the day set for the
37:48family court
37:50hearing in the early hours of the
37:52morning a fire broke out in the house on
37:54Victory Road
37:57when fire Crews arrived they were
37:59confronted by a severe Blaze at the
38:01front of the house the six children it
38:03was the culmination of mix's plan but it
38:06was fatally flawed he failed to take
38:08into account the deadly speed with which
38:10fire and smoke can take
38:12hold nobody in their right mind would
38:16set a fire inside their house knowing
38:18full well there were six children asleep
38:20upstairs I can only just sum it up in
38:23two words evil and stupid
38:34right this is the proper way you hoing
38:35up right don't watch how the girls do it
38:38right prop away hoing up mck Philpot had
38:41created a world for himself with his
38:43wife his lover and their 11 children a
38:46world that he controlled one way or the
38:49other I will get what I
38:51want when Mick's lover Lisa Willis left
38:54taking their children he was prepared to
38:56do anything to win them
39:00back but his carefully laid plans went
39:02tragically
39:03wrong Michael Philpot never expected the
39:06fire to end up like it did he thought it
39:08would be I think a very lowlevel crime
39:11something that he would get away with 18
39:14Victory Road had become a crime scene
39:17the investigation which is still in its
39:19early stages continues to focus on what
39:22caused the blaze it became apparent to
39:24detectives that the parents couldn't be
39:26ruled out the the day of the fire was
39:28critical for Mick Philpot he and Lisa
39:31were du in the family court now you've
39:33got this apparent Coincidence of it
39:35starting actually in the early hours of
39:38the morning before the all youw at court
39:41now I may be cynical around that but
39:44it's too much of a coincidence for me
39:45that that fire takes place on the
39:47morning that they're all going to court
39:49for a family hearing it's our belief
39:51that Michael's plan was to go to court
39:54that day having discredited Lisa and in
39:56the same
39:58scenario he's actually made himself look
40:00like a hero and a victim at the same
40:02time and he believed that would achieve
40:04his aim of getting the children
40:05[Music]
40:06back as detectives began to piece
40:09together the events of that night they
40:11began to question the philpot's
40:13[Music]
40:15account Mick told police that he had
40:18spent the evening at home playing
40:19snooker with a friend Paul Mosley mered
40:22had sex with both men with Mosley
40:24claiming he left around 1:30 in the
40:26morning
40:29the couple then went to bed in the
40:30conservatory where they usually
40:33slept Michael and M both claim that they
40:35were having a cuddle in bed having
40:36fallen asleep after watching television
40:39and that they were woken by the
40:41alarm on hearing the alarm they said
40:43that they went through the kitchen and
40:45opened the door into the lounge but what
40:47they did when they saw the fire raised
40:49questions for the
40:51police from their own accounts they
40:54found the fire turned around and gone
40:56through the kitchen past two fire
40:58extinguishers a sink with water in
41:01they've done nothing to actually look at
41:02the fire and to decide can they fight it
41:05can they put it out can they rescue the
41:08children the fire had been started with
41:10petrol and unchecked it spread rapidly
41:13sending smoke up to the bedrooms where
41:15the children were
41:16sleeping anything made from petroleum
41:18products is going to give off large
41:20amounts of thick black acrid smoke
41:22there'll be a lot of carbon monoxide in
41:24there a lot of um cyanide in the VAR
41:27different toxic gases anybody up there
41:29is going to be breathing in those
41:32gases maade went out of the back of the
41:34house and called 999
41:37Phil in the Phil Mick claimed that he
41:40went to find a ladder using it to get up
41:42to the back of the house where he tried
41:44to break the
41:45window the ladder was already if not up
41:48at the window certainly in position and
41:51the plan was that he would go up that
41:53ladder he would open that window and he
41:56would rescue all six children from that
41:59bedroom but by the time neighbors Darren
42:01and Jamie Butler arrive on the scene the
42:04dramatic rescue plan had gone badly
42:08[Music]
42:09wrong the whole demeanor of Mikan marab
42:12was it was wrong yeah from start to
42:16finish it was like it was all set in
42:20their particular way well we know laders
42:23there
42:25and the emergency Services were quickly
42:28on the scene when they asked Mick where
42:30the children were he told them
42:32repeatedly that the children were in the
42:34back bedroom he had also said this to
42:37the 999
42:38operator in the front or the
42:41backom all of them of them
42:44yet we believe that is part of his plan
42:47and that somehow the children were going
42:49to be in the back bedroom where he could
42:51rescue the children and uh make sure
42:53they escaped from the
42:55fire but if there was a plan for the
42:57children to gather in one bedroom it had
43:00failed officers found the children still
43:03in their beds where they had been
43:04overcome by the
43:08smoke they were laid out in front of the
43:10house where the Emergency Services
43:12worked desperately to save
43:15them Mick made an attempt to to get to
43:19his children you know and he he got
43:21through to one of his children kissed
43:23one of his children on the head and then
43:26got up and one went across the road to
43:27his neighbor's ass to see how his wife
43:29was doing you know it everything was
43:31wrong it was
43:33wrong mixed strange Behavior was
43:35beginning to attract
43:37attention the couple's son Dwayne was
43:40critically ill he was transferred from
43:43the local hospital to a specialist unit
43:4537 M away in
43:47Birmingham but when Hospital staff
43:49arranged for the couple to go with him
43:51Mick
43:52refused Michael had initially said that
43:54he wouldn't go because he' got to go to
43:55court that day for cust of the five
43:58children he'd had with Lisa Willis he
44:00went um for a coffee he just didn't seem
44:03anxious or concerned really and in the
44:05end officers actually were quite clear
44:07and told the both of them that they'd
44:08have to go if that was me my child's
44:11intensive care fighting for his
44:13life I want to spend as much time with
44:17him as possible and I don't want to
44:19leave his side but that weren't the case
44:23they was more interested in
44:27running around the hospital having chats
44:29having sneaky chats with Paul Mosley and
44:32he was doing things
44:34that a normal human being wouldn't do me
44:37and Sharon was like walking down the
44:39hway and he was behind us and all of a
44:42sudden he show Mick and I turn around
44:45and he was grabbing This Woman's bum and
44:47saying this is what I like
44:50and he just lot of kids M how can you go
44:53on like
44:55that the the press conference thing it
44:59was fake and not once did he say can
45:02anyone help me in finding who started
45:06the fire Myers he was too busy thinking
45:08Tom L Canary let excuse me a minute it
45:11was false that was F crocodile
45:14te in an attempt to understand the
45:17philpot's bizarre behavior the police
45:19secretly recorded them the couple were
45:21in a police van together when Mick Was
45:23Heard asking merid if she was sticking
45:25to the story
45:30We Believe at one point he said I didn't
45:32mean to do it on my life um and is also
45:35said to her are we sticking with the
45:36story because if you want or if you want
45:38me to I'll blab about
45:44it as the investigation
45:47progressed traces of petrol additives
45:50were found on the clothes of the fill
45:51pots and the friend who was with them at
45:53the house that night Paul Mosley
45:57Mick and mered philpart along with Paul
45:59Mosley were charged with a manslaughter
46:01of their six
46:07[Music]
46:12children in June last year under dull
46:15gray skies six coffins were carried to
46:17St Mary's Church in
46:19Darby crowds gathered to pay respect to
46:21the six young lives lost in the
46:24fire only the parents Mick and M Philpot
46:27were
46:29absent I apologize to that
46:32guy I apologize to him for not saving
46:35his
46:36kids do you know what that did to me
46:38that ripped me right
46:41open right down the
46:47middle today at Nottingham Crown Court
46:50Mick and marade Philpot and Paul Mosley
46:53were found guilty of the manslaughter of
46:55the philpot's children
46:57Dwayne Jade John Jack Jesse and
47:07Jaden I've never dealt with a case as
47:10sad as this so there isn't a winner in
47:13this by any stretch of the imagination
47:15all we've done is really try to just
47:17seek some justice for six children who
47:20are no longer with us that were on the
47:22cusp of their lives um and hopefully
47:24we've got Justice for those six poor
47:25kids
