- 0:00- Hey, what's up Marques here,
- 0:01coming at you live at golden hour
- 0:03with a pretty sweet electric vehicle.
- 0:08You might have heard of it, it's a Lucid Air.
- 0:10Actually, you might not have heard of it.
- 0:11It's kind of rare at this point.
- 0:13But the Lucid Air, this is a funny one,
- 0:15I just put a main channel video out about this car
- 0:18because I think it's that interesting.
- 0:20But really the way I'm describing it is
- 0:22this is a large four door luxury sedan.
- 0:25An expensive four door luxury sedan.
- 0:28But from the outside looking in,
- 0:29it kind of looks like the strategy for Lucid right now
- 0:32is to take what Tesla's doing
- 0:34and just one up as many meaningful things about it
- 0:37as possible.
- 0:38And I actually think they've done a pretty good job
- 0:40at a lot of that.
- 0:41Now I'm gonna show you a little bit more
- 0:43in this more in depth, detailed, casual style video
- 0:46because I, that's why I made this channel.
- 0:48But yeah, make sure you give a like on this video.
- 0:50Subscribe if you're new here of course,
- 0:51if you wanna see more videos like this
- 0:53and the style about these cars.
- 0:55Okay, let's jump in.
- 0:56First of all, the major specs,
- 0:58the Lucid Air, this is a Grand Touring performance spec.
- 1:03It has 446 miles of range.
- 1:06Okay, there's a spec that's gonna have
- 1:08over 500 miles of range.
- 1:10There's going to be a later rear wheel drive only spec,
- 1:12but this is dual motors, all-wheel drive,
- 1:14and a true, honest 400 plus miles of range.
- 1:17That is really impressive.
- 1:18Then there's 350 kilowatt charging.
- 1:20That is super impressive.
- 1:22Then there is the super low drag coefficient.
- 1:24The efficiency, the smaller motors,
- 1:26everything this car does right is right in your face.
- 1:31I have my thoughts on the aesthetic,
- 1:33which we'll get to in a second.
- 1:34But just from a baseline,
- 1:36they've done faster charging and more range than Tesla.
- 1:39You still have to deal with the public charging network.
- 1:41There is no Lucid charging network.
- 1:43This is like if you get lucky
- 1:45and find an Electrify America charger,
- 1:47you can get incredible charging speeds.
- 1:50But that's getting lucky.
- 1:50So, I've lived with this
- 1:51roughly $150 - $160,000 car now for about a week,
- 1:55and I like a lot of things about it.
- 1:57Let me start on the inside though,
- 1:58'cause I think that's really where
- 1:59most people are concerned about this car,
- 2:01which is the luxury part of it.
- 2:03And that's where I think it actually beats Tesla
- 2:05by quite a handy margin.
- 2:07If it knows I'm next to the car, it'll open. There you go.
- 2:11We can get inside.
- 2:12So, getting inside is pretty easy,
- 2:15and immediately you're surrounded by,
- 2:18well you have a real steering wheel,
- 2:19but you have Alcantara over here.
- 2:21You have some leather here, it smells like a leather.
- 2:23And it's got a lot of nice material choices throughout.
- 2:28These seats are really nice,
- 2:29and I'll get to those in a second.
- 2:31But this is one of those cars
- 2:33where you'd be happy to drive it, or to be driven in it,
- 2:37because these back seats are also very nice.
- 2:40Matter of fact, let me show you that.
- 2:41So, to get to the backseat,
- 2:42I'm gonna open the door with this electronic door latch.
- 2:45Really nice handle there. I like that a lot.
- 2:47But I'm gonna get in the backseat.
- 2:49Now, the reason this is such a nice backseat
- 2:51is because they've gone with not a hatchback style,
- 2:54but just a regular truck.
- 2:55That's a big difference from the Model S sedan.
- 2:58Oh, it's gonna lock me out. The key's in my pocket.
- 3:00Here's the key by the way, double tap here to get in.
- 3:04And this is way more leg room than a Model S.
- 3:07This is a 6' 3" driving position,
- 3:10and I've got plenty of space here.
- 3:13Closing it behind you. And this is also very luxury.
- 3:16Here's the switch to bring up,
- 3:19when you see these shades,
- 3:21I mean that's when you know.
- 3:22that's when you're in for it good.
- 3:24So, you've got HVAC controls back here that are really nice.
- 3:27Here's one underneath the seat here for the foot well.
- 3:30That's really nice.
- 3:31You've got a screen here for a heated seat.
- 3:34And these heat really fast, I noticed.
- 3:36I'm a very big fan of these heated seats
- 3:38and the climate controls.
- 3:40Plus a little storage back here.
- 3:41Like this is a nice back seat.
- 3:43Here's the armrest, two cup holders.
- 3:46Little bit more storage.
- 3:47No wireless charger, but I'm okay with that.
- 3:49And then access to the trunk.
- 3:52Didn't know that was gonna be there,
- 3:54but that's your pass through without putting the seats down
- 3:56to get straight to the trunk.
- 3:58And then these are just nice leather stitched seats
- 4:01with really good material.
- 4:02I'm a fan of the backseat experience.
- 4:04But that's not why I get this car.
- 4:06So lemme show you what they did.
- 4:07They gave you all that backseat space
- 4:10in the same amount of basically,
- 4:12space between the wheels as a Tesla Model S.
- 4:14And they did that by cutting into the trunk a little bit.
- 4:18And they went, okay, we'll still give you a trunk,
- 4:20but it's gonna be a little bit smaller
- 4:23and a little bit less hatchback-y,
- 4:25well less hatchback-y than a normal Model S trunk.
- 4:28So, it is a good amount of space in here, as you can see.
- 4:31Space up front behind the seat,
- 4:33and sub-trunk space that you can fit a lot of stuff in.
- 4:37But this opening right here is small.
- 4:40This opening right here.
- 4:42So, you technically have a lot of room
- 4:43to like put a lot of stuff in this trunk if you want to.
- 4:46But just, this is such a weird trunk opening.
- 4:48I've never seen a trunk opening like this before.
- 4:51And not large items, not,
- 4:55not a lot of large things going in the trunk.
- 4:57But that'll actually get me to the front truck,
- 4:59because the front trunk is really nice on this.
- 5:03So, here's how you get into the front trunk.
- 5:05You long press on the key and it opens.
- 5:09It's a power opening front trunk.
- 5:11Big wide space and a ton of front trunk space.
- 5:15Here is the sub trunk down below there.
- 5:18That is massive. That is massive.
- 5:22And so, this is, because it's powered
- 5:23and actually super readily accessible,
- 5:25I feel like people are gonna wanna
- 5:27use this front trunk all the time.
- 5:29And I actually do think
- 5:29I will wanna use the front trunk all the time.
- 5:31So, because they've made those motors tiny,
- 5:34because they've made their parts really efficient,
- 5:37kind of a small trunk, huge front trunk,
- 5:41lots of rear leg room.
- 5:42Actually they've even put,
- 5:43in terms of buttons inside the car,
- 5:46that's the front trunk button.
- 5:47They don't even have a trunk button up here,
- 5:49just the front trunk.
- 5:50So I'm gonna be tempted to use that a lot.
- 5:52Okay, back into the car.
- 5:54I wanna talk about owning and driving this thing.
- 5:56So, as long as I'm keeping the Tesla comparison going,
- 5:57they've won the luxury and materials game.
- 6:01They also have an incredible sound system in here.
- 6:03I was listening to some TIDAL Hi-fi tracks
- 6:06and some Dolby Atmos stuff in here.
- 6:0821 speakers are surrounding me.
- 6:10The instrumentals have this crazy separation.
- 6:12A wide sound stage. It's amazing.
- 6:14And also, it's just quieter in here.
- 6:17Just great sealed windows, framed windows.
- 6:20Nice sealing overall.
- 6:21Driving and sitting still, it's very quiet in here.
- 6:25But the one thing
- 6:26that I would still give the advantage to
- 6:28is Tesla has better software.
- 6:30Now this is the 2.0 version
- 6:31of the software that Lucid's built,
- 6:33and it is much better than the previous.
- 6:35So, basically you've got a huge screen up here.
- 6:39This is not touch screen.
- 6:40And then you've got another touch screen
- 6:42over on the left hand side.
- 6:43And I like this screen here. This does a lot of cool things.
- 6:45First of all, you can long press or swipe up
- 6:48and it gives you some hidden storage
- 6:50behind the motorized screen.
- 6:52That's cool to see.
- 6:53And there's a bunch of other storage in the center console.
- 6:55This can move around. It's kind of nice.
- 6:57I don't mind that. You can close it.
- 6:59You've got some dry wood. Overall, well done.
- 7:02But then I get this screen back,
- 7:04and I just wanna show you a couple quirks about the UI here.
- 7:07So first of all, you've got these three modes,
- 7:09Smooth mode, Swift mode,
- 7:11which is a little bit of a sportier drive,
- 7:13and then Sprint, which asks for a confirmation
- 7:16every single time to use maximum power and torque.
- 7:19Probably don't need that, but okay.
- 7:22These are three different modes
- 7:23that basically bundle together
- 7:25a bunch of different things about the car.
- 7:26The suspension softness, the steering weight,
- 7:30how low the car is, how firm things are,
- 7:32how, just how sporty everything feels,
- 7:35it's just bundled into three buttons.
- 7:37Super convenient. Really nice.
- 7:39If you have a passenger, you just put it in Smooth mode.
- 7:41Guaranteed fine every time.
- 7:43And then if you wanna go to Sprint, hit Sprint, confirm.
- 7:45But if there's a little bit more granularity that you want,
- 7:48maybe you want swift acceleration
- 7:50but still soft damping for the suspension,
- 7:53you can't unpair any of that stuff.
- 7:55I would really like to see that in the car this expensive.
- 7:58And then I'm also very annoyed by the fact
- 7:59that every time I get in the car it's in Smooth mode.
- 8:03Every single time. It doesn't stay in Swift mode.
- 8:05If I start it in Swift mode, it doesn't stay in Sprint mode.
- 8:08Every time you get in the car it will be in Smooth mode,
- 8:11and I was annoyed by that.
- 8:12And then here's one more thing for you.
- 8:14It's kind of got this cool continuity thing going on.
- 8:16So, if I open maps for example,
- 8:19it's, it's faster than it was before.
- 8:21But there you go, you've got this swipe down
- 8:22to bring up the map down here as well.
- 8:25Now if I open music, the music shows up here,
- 8:29and then if I swipe down here
- 8:31that shows up with the music as well.
- 8:33It's actually got this sort of a continuity thing going on.
- 8:36So, if I pull that up, it pulls it up.
- 8:39And if I pull this down, it's almost like they're connected.
- 8:42Which is like really cool at first,
- 8:45but that also means that I can't have maps up here
- 8:49and music down here,
- 8:51or music up here and maps down here.
- 8:54They always, it's just paired together.
- 8:56I would like to be able to, I don't,
- 8:58I haven't found a way to be able to do this yet,
- 8:59but I'd like to be able to separate those two.
- 9:01But anyway, this is a luxurious car.
- 9:03You can tell because there's about
- 9:04750,000,000 different ways to adjust thigh support.
- 9:10Like these, these are incredibly adjustable seats.
- 9:12But then also they are massage seats.
- 9:15So if you wanna run a quick massage
- 9:17it will actually do that for you.
- 9:19I almost never use massage seats in cars.
- 9:21But you can kind of tell,
- 9:22when you see a couple things like the window shades,
- 9:25when you see the HVAC controls in the back, on the side,
- 9:27when you see massage seats,
- 9:29all those things are pretty good cues of a luxury feel,
- 9:33or an intent for a luxury feel in a car.
- 9:35So, this is nice.
- 9:36And, shout out to the buttons right here.
- 9:38This is a volume switch, or roller,
- 9:41just for the volume knob.
- 9:42Then this is also just temperature up and down
- 9:45and fan speed up and down for HVAC.
- 9:47Very simple. Things I'm going to adjust often.
- 9:50Not on the touch screen.
- 9:52The one thing that they did
- 9:53to copy Tesla on the touch screen is the glove box button.
- 9:57I don't know why they did that.
- 9:59They could have put it up here with the hazard lights.
- 10:01They just put lights and hazards up here.
- 10:03But yeah, there's a glove box button to open this.
- 10:06Probably the cheapest feeling part of the car.
- 10:07The glove box, fine, fine.
- 10:11But I think this is,
- 10:12this is one of the more interesting cars
- 10:15for the past few years.
- 10:16I did initially get to see it in its prototype form
- 10:19and it had this crazy like, executive backseat.
- 10:22You could tell they were focusing on the luxury experience
- 10:24at the expense of some other parts of the car,
- 10:26and I think they succeeded
- 10:27and it's really luxurious on the inside.
- 10:30My hot take though, is that it's ugly.
- 10:35Yeah, it's ugly. It is an ugly car.
- 10:38I've, it's weird,
- 10:39I've seen some other comments on the internet
- 10:40of people saying, damn, Lucid's look nice.
- 10:43And I've even, I've had some people come up
- 10:45and like, ask about the car like, that looks nice.
- 10:48And I kind of agree with some of it and disagree.
- 10:52So, the Aero caps on the wheels, I think they look okay.
- 10:56But I think the overall shape does still scream luxury.
- 11:00And they've got this two-tone thing going on.
- 11:02This is what Maybach did.
- 11:03They've really made the two-one an obvious symbol of luxury.
- 11:06You've got this nice Air Grand Touring badge on the back.
- 11:10It looks like a luxury car,
- 11:13but I don't like this shape at all.
- 11:14This, this right here to me,
- 11:17not that, not that good looking.
- 11:19And so, you combine that, you can Stealth this out.
- 11:21This is a $6,000 option.
- 11:23If you take that away, it'll be black.
- 11:26But it's always gonna be this shape.
- 11:29I will say, I did look at the the Sapphire version
- 11:32which is gonna ship in 2023,
- 11:33which is the triple motor, Plaid killer,
- 11:36with like faster acceleration
- 11:38and carbon ceramic brakes and all that.
- 11:40That one's got black wheels, no Aero caps, and the Stealth.
- 11:43So it doesn't look two tone.
- 11:44That one looks a lot better to me.
- 11:46But, Andrew said from the front
- 11:50it looks kind of like a whale shark. (snickering)
- 11:53And I think because of this huge visor, I kind of agree.
- 11:58It's a nice little squat, low, wide looking car.
- 12:02And that's kind of like a whale shark's face.
- 12:04It does have some pretty sweet lights.
- 12:06At night you can see the light show
- 12:07when you come up to the car
- 12:09when you turn it on, when you turn it off.
- 12:12And I do actually really like these air vents here.
- 12:13These are functional pockets of air
- 12:16that actually come through up, under, above the headlights.
- 12:19So these are some pretty high tech headlights
- 12:22to give you a really nice beam
- 12:24and actually take air in and cool the brakes
- 12:26and all that coming through here.
- 12:27That's some more functional aero.
- 12:29And then that's your daytime running light and blinker.
- 12:34So, I like the lights.
- 12:34And up at the front here is some radar and some cameras.
- 12:38Good stuff.
- 12:39But I'll just leave you with this,
- 12:40I, you know, having lived with the car now for a week or so,
- 12:44uh, electric cars are getting really interesting.
- 12:46The fact that this car
- 12:47beats the flagships in so many other things
- 12:51is really impressive.
- 12:53It does it at the expense of a trunk
- 12:55and at the expense of expense, the cost.
- 12:59Very expensive.
- 13:00The Sapphire version, which will be faster than the Plaid,
- 13:03and have carbon ceramic brakes and all that is $250,000.
- 13:07So yeah, you can beat the big dogs,
- 13:09but it'll be very expensive.
- 13:11But yeah, everyone's gotta make a different decision
- 13:13for their first electric car.
- 13:15This one for Lucid is ultra-luxury sedan.
- 13:19I think next they're going to do an SUV,
- 13:21and then we'll see if they get around
- 13:22to the cheaper stuff later.
- 13:24But for now, Lucid's proving
- 13:25you can just put a lot of money into the electricity and R&D
- 13:26and make a nice car.
- 13:31It's a nice car. All right, that's it.
- 13:34Thanks for watching. Subscribe for more.
- 13:36Get you in the next one. Peace.
