- 0:00hello everyone and welcome back to
- 0:02another episode of our bizarre and
- 0:04unusual world today I'm going to be
- 0:06covering a case that has been highly
- 0:08requested today we'll be talking about
- 0:11the Lizzie Borden case
- 0:23so let's start with the who who exactly
- 0:25does this case circle around and that is
- 0:28the Borden family although this case
- 0:31heavily focuses on Lizzie Borden
- 0:34specifically who I may or may not be
- 0:38related to through the crazy twists and
- 0:41turns of family tree so what about the
- 0:44win and aware of this case this case
- 0:47takes place in the summer of 1892 in
- 0:49Fall River Massachusetts the crime
- 0:52itself took place on August 4th 1892 so
- 0:57what is this case all about it's a very
- 0:59popular name but maybe you don't know
- 1:02what exactly this case entails so with
- 1:05the Borden family consisted of Andrew
- 1:07Borden his second wife Abby Borden
- 1:09Andrews two daughters Lizzie Borden and
- 1:12Emma Borden
- 1:13within their household they also had a
- 1:14maid named Maggie Sullivan living with
- 1:16them and on the date of this crime a man
- 1:20named John Morris was also visiting from
- 1:22out of town and staying in their guest
- 1:23bedroom though he was Andrew Borden's
- 1:25first wife's brother so basically
- 1:27Lizzie's uncle the Borden family was
- 1:30considered to be very wealthy during
- 1:32this time but they didn't really show it
- 1:34Andrew Borden insisted that they live a
- 1:37very normal life and with nothing to
- 1:39lavish and while the girls kind of
- 1:42didn't like this that's just how he
- 1:43wanted his house to run his first wife
- 1:47did pass away and then that is when he
- 1:49married his second wife Abby Borden and
- 1:52she would become the two girls
- 1:53stepmother but it would kind of seem
- 1:55like they did not have a good
- 1:57relationship with their stepmother as I
- 1:59said his two daughters Lizzie and Emma
- 2:01really didn't like how he spent his
- 2:04wealth for example Andrew Borden bought
- 2:06his new wife's sister a home but refused
- 2:09to buy his daughters a home which did
- 2:12not sit well with them obviously and at
- 2:15one point after arguments and fights
- 2:17regarding these things they actually
- 2:19stopped calling her mom or stepmom and
- 2:21they just referred to his new wife as
- 2:24mrs. Borden now the two daughters were
- 2:27older before the time
- 2:30you could say Emma was 41 at the time of
- 2:32the crime and Lizzie was 32 both of them
- 2:35were unmarried and still living in their
- 2:37father's home so jumping to the day of
- 2:40the crime
- 2:41August 4th 1892 Lizzie Borden claims
- 2:44that she was out back in the barn
- 2:46organizing some different fishing
- 2:48supplies she said when she came back to
- 2:50the house she noted that the screen door
- 2:52was unlocked and when she came inside
- 2:54that is when she discovered her father's
- 2:56brutal murder she found his body it is
- 3:00suggested that he wasn't feeling well
- 3:02that day so he went to lie down kind of
- 3:04like in the study and that is where he
- 3:07was attacked because he was sleeping it
- 3:09appeared that he did not put up much of
- 3:11a fight so the investigation showed that
- 3:14he had been hit with the blunt end of
- 3:16what they assumed was maybe an axe about
- 3:1811 times in his head although I'm not
- 3:22sure how they could really tell exactly
- 3:24how many times this guy was hit in the
- 3:26head because the scene was so brutal so
- 3:29gory it's hard to make ends meet of
- 3:32anything so the fact that they knew it
- 3:34was 11 I don't know what type of science
- 3:36that was but his head was really really
- 3:40messed up this kind of led investigators
- 3:42to believe that this crime was a crime
- 3:45of passion and not opportunity now
- 3:48supposedly during this time the maid
- 3:51Maggie had gone upstairs to her room to
- 3:53take a nap and she claims she didn't
- 3:55hear anything until she heard Lizzie
- 3:57come in and start screaming like come
- 3:59downstairs someone has that father is
- 4:02dead someone has come in and killed him
- 4:04so Maggie came downstairs and that's
- 4:07where she found Lizzie in a clean blue
- 4:09dress and the body of Andrew it was at
- 4:12that point that Lizzie suggested and
- 4:14like pretty much made her go like down
- 4:16the way across the street to a doctor's
- 4:18house that lived nearby so Maggie did
- 4:21leave and came back with a neighbor it
- 4:23was at that point that Lizzie suggested
- 4:25that she assumed or she thought that her
- 4:27stepmother was upstairs and maybe they
- 4:29should go and check on her during this
- 4:32craziness so the pair did as Lesley said
- 4:35and that is unfortunately when they
- 4:37found the second body Abby Borden was
- 4:39found facedown in the guest room once
- 4:41again it was a very brutal
- 4:43Gouri seen they estimate she had been
- 4:46hit in the head about 18 times so Andrew
- 4:51and Abby Borden were both murdered
- 4:53brutally in their own home so why would
- 4:57anyone want to kill them there are a few
- 4:59suspects within this case but none are
- 5:01as popular as Lizzie Borden I mean most
- 5:04people refer to this case as the Lizzie
- 5:06Borden case not the murder of Andrew and
- 5:08Abby Borden no they say it's the Lizzie
- 5:10Borden case so she was obviously a prime
- 5:13suspect throughout all of this there are
- 5:17a few things working against Lizzie when
- 5:19she made her statements to the
- 5:20investigators she was kind of all over
- 5:22the place you could say with her answers
- 5:24when looking further into her
- 5:25whereabouts they found that the barn
- 5:27attic that she had claimed to be in
- 5:29there was a layer of dust on the floor
- 5:31and there were no footprints so they
- 5:32didn't think she had actually been
- 5:33upstairs in that barn section and the
- 5:37heat was so intense during that time
- 5:38they don't think that she could have
- 5:40been up there that long like she claimed
- 5:42some people started to suggest that
- 5:44Lizzie actually had a very hostile
- 5:46relationship with both her father and
- 5:48her stepmother and so the target kind of
- 5:51got pointed toward Lizzie now her sister
- 5:53Emma was actually out of town during
- 5:56this crime so she wasn't really on the
- 5:58police radar whatsoever it was all
- 6:00focused on Lizzie Borden rumors
- 6:03obviously flew that Lizzie killed them
- 6:05to get the wealth get the money because
- 6:08it turns out her father left all of
- 6:11everything to her and her sister
- 6:13although Lizzie claims that she had no
- 6:15idea there was any sort of will and she
- 6:17didn't know that her sister and her
- 6:19would end up with all of his money now
- 6:22on August 9th Lizzie was arrested the
- 6:24judge pretty much said yeah she's
- 6:26probably guilty so let's just take her
- 6:27to trial the trial did not start until
- 6:30June 5th in 1893 so Lizzie spent like
- 6:33ten months in jail waiting for this
- 6:35trial and there was no evidence it was
- 6:39just rumor and speculation they had no
- 6:41evidence against Lizzie Borden they had
- 6:44found like a broken-off hatchet in the
- 6:46basement of the home that they thought
- 6:48maybe could have been the murder weapon
- 6:49but there was no blood no fingerprints
- 6:51nothing that was able to connect it to
- 6:54the crime so that was pretty much just
- 6:56missed so this trial was big news you
- 6:59know it was such a brutal murder that
- 7:02everyone was talking about this Lizzie
- 7:04Borden trial and everything and the
- 7:06prosecutor oddly enough I don't really
- 7:08understand decided to bring the skulls
- 7:11of Andrew and Abby Borden to the trial
- 7:14and instead of just using them as
- 7:16evidence he accidentally dropped them on
- 7:19the ground and they like rolled out on
- 7:21the table in the floor or whatever and
- 7:22it caused quite the scene and Lizzie
- 7:25actually fainted at the sight of her
- 7:28father and stepmother
- 7:29bashed in skulls sitting there on the
- 7:32table there was a few witnesses that
- 7:34testified during the trial one was a
- 7:36family friend who claimed that Lizzie
- 7:39had been burning a blue dress the day
- 7:41after the crime took place
- 7:43although Maggie the maid said that
- 7:46Lizzie had been wearing a clean blue
- 7:48dress so it couldn't have been the same
- 7:50dress is kind of the argument there so
- 7:53that kind of led people to debate if
- 7:55Lizzie could have murdered her parents
- 7:58hid the weapon and switched dresses
- 8:00within the time period before before the
- 8:03maid came downstairs or anybody else
- 8:05came home which I guess is possible
- 8:08although those dresses back in the day
- 8:10took forever to put on so I don't know
- 8:12how realistic and that is another
- 8:14witness during this trial was actually a
- 8:16local pharmacist now this man claimed
- 8:18that Lizzie tried to buy a specific type
- 8:20of poison from him the day before the
- 8:23murders but he said if she didn't have
- 8:25like a medical need for it then he could
- 8:28not give it to her that's very
- 8:29interesting information although it was
- 8:32eventually dismissed within this trial
- 8:34so obviously another big part to this
- 8:36case in this trial was the first
- 8:39interview that the investigators did
- 8:41with Lizzie Borden she was acting very
- 8:42weird her answers really make sense she
- 8:45was talking in circles and it kind of
- 8:47made her the prime suspect oh all of
- 8:50that interview had to be thrown out
- 8:52because of two reasons Lizzie did not
- 8:55have a lawyer present and none of the
- 8:57investigators told her that she had the
- 8:59right to remain silent
- 9:01so they throughout that whole interview
- 9:04which was pretty much the only evidence
- 9:05they had going was that she was acting
- 9:08weird after the murders which
- 9:09could be from a lot of things I mean she
- 9:12walked in and saw her dad's smashed in
- 9:14body and her stepmother was murdered
- 9:16it doesn't necessarily make her guilty
- 9:19but if she was they had no evidence
- 9:21going for them they actually had three
- 9:24different judges decide that those
- 9:26statements that Lizzie had made could
- 9:28not be used in court during this trial
- 9:30when all was said and done with this
- 9:32trial Lizzie Borden was found not guilty
- 9:34which is so surprising to me because
- 9:37it's such a popular case in name I had
- 9:40assumed that she did it of course and
- 9:43she was convicted but know doing this
- 9:46research they didn't really have any
- 9:47evidence for her
- 9:48there was nothing necessarily saying
- 9:50that yes she for sure committed this
- 9:53crime so what about the other suspects
- 9:56if it wasn't Lizzie who could have
- 9:57killed them another suspect was John
- 10:00Moores the uncle that was staying with
- 10:02them a recent book actually suggested
- 10:04him as a suspect so odd timing he was
- 10:07not seen during the timeline of these
- 10:09murders and it ended up that his alibi
- 10:11didn't hold up whatsoever mrs. Borden's
- 10:14body was also found in the guest room
- 10:16where he had been staying Andrew Borden
- 10:19and John did have a business arrangement
- 10:21together but their business was not
- 10:23doing good so a lot of people suggest
- 10:25that maybe John was jealous of the
- 10:28Borden riches they still had wealth even
- 10:30though his business was failing so was
- 10:32it something like that passion of crime
- 10:35that made him kill them and did he use a
- 10:38meat cleaver instead of an axe because
- 10:40John was a butcher so definitely
- 10:43interesting points would make sense why
- 10:46he could have been another suspect but
- 10:48obviously I guess they didn't have
- 10:49enough on him because he was never
- 10:51convicted of anything either another
- 10:53suspect for this case is Maggie - made
- 10:56several people don't believe that she
- 10:58could have been upstairs not even fully
- 11:00taking a nap and not here two brutal
- 11:03murders within this home like she had to
- 11:07have heard something so was she in on it
- 11:09or was she really just in that dead of a
- 11:11sleep that she didn't hear two people
- 11:13being murdered
- 11:14so another theory actually suggests that
- 11:16Lizzie and
- 11:17Maggie committed this crime together I
- 11:20mean think about it they did kind of
- 11:22provide each other with alibis
- 11:24during this crime period and perhaps you
- 11:28know if you help me do this I'll give
- 11:30you a split of the money or something to
- 11:32that nature some people even suggest
- 11:34maybe they were in some sort of
- 11:36relationship there's no evidence for
- 11:38that but that's popular in a lot of fan
- 11:41theories and entertainment purposes with
- 11:43this case if you will along with this it
- 11:46suggests that the pair potentially
- 11:49murdered the two naked and then wash off
- 11:52the blood and then switched into a clean
- 11:55dress and maybe that's how they were
- 11:57able to hide the evidence or there was
- 11:59no bloody clothing or anything found
- 12:01which is interesting that's another one
- 12:03that's popular in entertainment I think
- 12:05that there's been a couple different
- 12:06movies and shows and everything that
- 12:08depict Lizzie Borden killing her parents
- 12:11naked but yeah the two sisters Lizzie
- 12:14Borden and Emma Borden lived out their
- 12:16life they moved to a much nicer house in
- 12:19a much nicer part of town than their
- 12:21father would have liked them to and I
- 12:23just lived out their life the two murder
- 12:26cases the Borden murders Abby Borden and
- 12:28Andrew Borden their case is still
- 12:30unsolved we don't know who killed them
- 12:32lots and lots of people do think that
- 12:35Lizzie had something to do with it that
- 12:37it was her or her and Maggie but she had
- 12:40something to do with it was it mean was
- 12:42it just a stranger off the streets what
- 12:44did this couple do to deserve such a
- 12:47hoot hole an unfortunate murder so how
- 12:51how is this case seen today I've
- 12:53mentioned there's a lot of fan theories
- 12:54and the case is very popular by name the
- 12:58Lizzie Borden case and their house the
- 13:01Borden house is actually a
- 13:02bed-and-breakfast now that you can go
- 13:04and stay at they will give you the
- 13:05history of everything I mean there's
- 13:07pictures like crime scene pictures in
- 13:10this house some of the furniture looks
- 13:12the same it's really crazy and then it's
- 13:14also extremely popular like a paranormal
- 13:16hotspot a lot of people to different
- 13:19Ghost Adventures and like paranormal
- 13:22investigations at this bed-and-breakfast
- 13:25trying to either communicate with the
- 13:28deceased or you and Lizzie Borden
- 13:31etc so it's kind of like a ghost hotspot
- 13:34if you will there are a lot of movies TV
- 13:37shows books even fan fictions depicting
- 13:40what they think happened with the Lizzie
- 13:42Borden case and if she killed her
- 13:44parents or who was in on it lots of
- 13:47different fan theories if you will
- 13:49there's even a really creepy Nursery
- 13:52Rhyme that was written about this case
- 13:55that is just like nursery rhymes are
- 13:57always so creepy why are they so creepy
- 13:59we sing these to children or children
- 14:00sing them like oh maybe that's why I
- 14:02don't like what I hear like children
- 14:04singing it just makes me think like the
- 14:06place is haunted I do hope you guys
- 14:08enjoyed this episode it was highly
- 14:09requested I loved learning about it what
- 14:12do you guys think do you think that
- 14:13Lizzie was in on killing her parents do
- 14:16you think she wasn't a part of it and
- 14:17she just got the wrong target marked
- 14:19honor who do you guys think did it thank
- 14:22you guys so much for watching and I'll
- 14:24see you guys in the next episode
