- 0:23the collection is comprised of 24 poems
- 0:27narrated as part of a storytelling
- 0:29contest
- 0:30between a group of pilgrims traveling
- 0:32from london to canterbury to visit the
- 0:35shrine of saint thomas abekit
- 0:39when the pilgrims draw lots to see who
- 0:42will tell the first tale
- 0:44the knight
- 0:45whom chaucer describes as both a storied
- 0:48mercenary and a modest gentleman is
- 0:51chosen
- 0:54the principal characters in the night's
- 0:56tale are cousins
- 0:57arsite and palamon who sacrifice their
- 1:01lifelong friendship to win the hand of
- 1:03the beautiful emily
- 1:06they seek victory through acts of

- 1:14one of the knights
- 1:17the poem opens with the story of theseus
- 1:20a duke returning to his native athens
- 1:23after conquering the realm of the
- 1:24amazons formerly named scythia
- 1:28and marrying hippolyta an amazonian
- 1:31queen
- 1:32while bringing hippolyta and her sister
- 1:35emily back to athens
- 1:37theseus encounters a group of women clad
- 1:39in black on the side of the highway near
- 1:42thebes
- 1:43the oldest of the women begs for theseus
- 1:46as pity
- 1:48saying that she was once the wife of
- 1:49king coppanius who was vanquished by
- 1:52creon
- 1:53the new ruler of thebes
- 1:56after conquering thebes creon refused to
- 1:59bury the bodies of those slain in battle
- 2:02the very soldiers mourned now by the
- 2:05women on the
- 2:06road theseus orders his army towards
- 2:10thebes swearing vengeance on creon and
- 2:13soon defeating him
- 2:15while surveying the battlefield
- 2:17afterward theseus men come upon two of
- 2:20creon's knights arcetae and palamon who
- 2:24are injured but not dead
- 2:27theseus sentences the young men to
- 2:29lifelong imprisonment in an athenian
- 2:31tower
- 2:34one day
- 2:35after years of imprisonment
- 2:37the knights spot hippolyta's sister
- 2:39emily picking flowers in a garden near
- 2:42the tower's window
- 2:44both men immediately fall in love with
- 2:46her
- 2:48over the years the night's friendship
- 2:51crumbles as they vie for her affection
- 2:54eventually arcete is freed with the help
- 2:57of his childhood friend perotheus
- 3:00a duke who happens to be visiting athens
- 3:03however
- 3:04theseus agrees to free arsote on the
- 3:06condition that arsete never steps foot
- 3:09in athens again
- 3:11tragically prohibiting him from courting
- 3:13emily
- 3:16after spending a year or two in thebes
- 3:19arsenite dreams that the god mercury
- 3:21tells him to go to athens and pursue
- 3:23emily's love
- 3:25he decides to do so in disguise
- 3:28taking a job as a page in emily's
- 3:30household
- 3:32under the name phyllis strait
- 3:34arsete eventually earns the approval of
- 3:37theseus himself
- 3:38who makes him a squire of his chamber
- 3:43meanwhile palamon has been imprisoned
- 3:45for nearly seven years when he decides
- 3:47to escape from the tower and flee the
- 3:49city
- 3:50intending to return in disguise much
- 3:53like our city
- 3:55with the help of a friend palamon
- 3:57escapes his jailer after spiking his
- 3:59spiced wine with narcotics and opium
- 4:03reaching a grove paloman comes upon
- 4:06arsete riding his war horse
- 4:09arsote is talking to himself
- 4:12and palamon overhears him lamenting life
- 4:14without emily's love
- 4:17still hidden
- 4:18palamon grows angry and leaps out to
- 4:21confront arsete
- 4:23since neither is armed the men vow to
- 4:26meet in the same place the next day and
- 4:28fight to the death for emily
- 4:33both knights return
- 4:34armed for battle
- 4:36but they are interrupted by theseus
- 4:38hippolyta and emily who were out on a
- 4:41hunt
- 4:42when palamon reveals that he and arsote
- 4:45are the formerly imprisoned knights
- 4:47theseus initially sentences them to
- 4:49death
- 4:51but hippolyta and emily intervene
- 4:54begging theseus for mercy
- 4:57upon receiving their word never to wage
- 4:59war on athens theseus decrees that the
- 5:02knights will compete for emily's love in
- 5:04a duel
- 5:05each armed with 100 nights
- 5:09the winner will marry emily
- 5:13the night before the duel palamon prays
- 5:15to a statue of venus
- 5:17asking the goddess of love to make emily
- 5:20his wife
- 5:22when the statue shakes palamon
- 5:24interprets it as an omen that the
- 5:26goddess is listening
- 5:28meanwhile emily prays to diana
- 5:31goddess of chastity to remain unmarried
- 5:36adding that if it is her destiny to get
- 5:38married she would prefer to marry
- 5:40someone who truly loves her
- 5:45finally
- 5:46arsete prays to the god of war mars for
- 5:49victory in battle in return mars
- 5:53whispers the word
- 5:55victory to him
- 5:57a third omen
- 6:00chaos soon erupts in the heavens with
- 6:03mars and venus waging war on each other
- 6:06that is until experienced saturn offers
- 6:09a compromise
- 6:11wherein venus can help palamon win his
- 6:14lady
- 6:15and mars can help arsete win the battle
- 6:20theseus commissions a lavish stadium for
- 6:23the duel
- 6:24and the day of the competition finally
- 6:26arrives
- 6:28the two sides compete valiantly but in
- 6:30the heat of battle palamon is
- 6:33accidentally wounded by a sword thrust
- 6:36theseus declares arsete the winner
- 6:39but before the knight can claim emily as
- 6:42this prize
- 6:43pluto sends an earthquake that frightens
- 6:46arsote's horse causing him to throw the
- 6:49soldier to the ground wounding his head
- 6:54with his dying breaths
- 6:56arsete tells emily that she should marry
- 7:00palomon and acknowledging the chivalric
- 7:03code of conduct
- 7:05he admits that his wounded enemy is
- 7:07worthy of her love
- 7:10following a heroic funeral for arsote
- 7:13emily indeed marries palamon fulfilling
- 7:16their three prayers
