- 0:07Despite being a nation steeped in
- 0:08folklore and legend, Finland possesses
- 0:11surprisingly few modern accounts of the
- 0:12mysterious [music] or paranormal. Yet,
- 0:15during the early 1970s, the Nordic
- 0:17country became the setting for a series
- 0:19of bizarre UFO encounters that would
- 0:22leave a lasting impression upon those
- 0:24involved.
- 0:26The most disturbing of these incidents
- 0:27centered upon a strange humanoid figure
- 0:30reportedly seen in the forests of
- 0:32central Finland, a being that would
- 0:34later become known as the Canula entity.
- 1:25As with many of its Scandinavian
- 1:27neighbors, Finland possesses a rich
- 1:29folklore populated by strange and often
- 1:33unsettling creatures.
- 1:35Amongst the most infamous is the Nacki,
- 1:38a shape-shifting water spirit said to
- 1:40inhabit lakes and rivers, luring
- 1:42unsuspecting victims beneath the surface
- 1:44to their deaths.
- 1:46Alongside it exists the Turus, a
- 1:49fearsome sea monster associated with
- 1:51chaos and destruction whose appearance
- 1:53was believed to herald disaster for
- 1:55those unfortunate enough to encounter
- 1:57it.
- 1:58Yet unlike many nations with similarly
- 2:00deep folkloric traditions, Finland has
- 2:03produced surprisingly few modern
- 2:05legends.
- 2:06Whilst neighboring countries such as
- 2:08Norway, Sweden, and Russia continue to
- 2:10generate reports of cryptids, hauntings,
- 2:12and unexplained phenomena, Finland's
- 2:15catalog of contemporary mysteries
- 2:17remains comparatively sparse.
- 2:20Some have suggested this may be linked
- 2:22to the country's unique geography.
- 2:24Finland is one of the most sparsely
- 2:26populated nations in Europe, with much
- 2:28of its population concentrated within a
- 2:30relatively small number of towns and
- 2:32cities. Beyond these settlements lie
- 2:35vast expanses of forest, marshland, and
- 2:38wilderness that remain largely untouched
- 2:40by human development.
- 2:42It is a landscape that can feel almost
- 2:45primeval in places. More than 180,000
- 2:49lakes are scattered across the country,
- 2:51separated by immense stretches of
- 2:53woodland that seem to extend endlessly
- 2:55towards the horizon. During winter, snow
- 2:59blankets much of the terrain, whilst
- 3:01darkness can linger for hours each day.
- 3:05It is perhaps unsurprising, then that
- 3:07such an environment has long encouraged
- 3:09superstition. Strange lights glimped
- 3:12between the trees, unusual sounds
- 3:14carried across frozen lakes, or solitary
- 3:17figures seen standing at the edge of the
- 3:19wilderness can take on an altogether
- 3:21different significance when experienced
- 3:23in such isolation.
- 3:25Historically, many Finns believed that
- 3:28unseen forces inhabited these remote
- 3:30regions. Spirits, guardians, and other
- 3:33entities that existed beyond the
- 3:35boundaries of ordinary human experience.
- 3:39Perhaps for that reason, when genuinely
- 3:42strange reports do emerge from these
- 3:43remote regions, they attract
- 3:45considerable attention, particularly
- 3:48when the witnesses involved appear
- 3:50credible and when some of the incidents
- 3:52allegedly leave behind physical
- 3:54evidence.
- 3:56One such series of encounters occurred
- 3:58across western Finland during the early
- 4:001970s.
- 4:02reports that would leave a lasting
- 4:03psychological impact upon those involved
- 4:06and which centered around a bizarre
- 4:08humanoid figure that appeared to arrive
- 4:10from the sky itself.
- 4:12Two of those incidents would go on to
- 4:14become amongst the most famous and
- 4:16enduring UFO cases in Finnish history.
- 4:22At around 8:00 p.m. on the evening of
- 4:24the 2nd of February, 1971,
- 4:27Sunnika Coutinan and a friend were
- 4:29making the long drive home to Aulu after
- 4:32spending the evening in neighboring
- 4:34Kusamo.
- 4:36The journey had been uneventful. Beyond
- 4:38the windscreen, the Finnish countryside
- 4:41lay smothered beneath snow and darkness.
- 4:43The surrounding forests reduced to
- 4:45little more than black walls pressing in
- 4:47from either side of the road.
- 4:50Then Coutina noticed the bright light
- 4:52reflected in her rear view mirror.
- 4:55At first, she paid it little attention.
- 4:58A vehicle traveling the same road
- 5:00wouldn't have been out of the ordinary.
- 5:02Yet, something about the light soon
- 5:04began to feel off.
- 5:06Instead of remaining behind them, it
- 5:08appeared to drift away from the road
- 5:10altogether.
- 5:12For several moments, it moved
- 5:13erratically across the darkness before
- 5:16accelerating out over the surrounding
- 5:18countryside.
- 5:20Both women watched as the light
- 5:22continued to pace their vehicle from a
- 5:24distance.
- 5:26There were no roads in that direction,
- 5:28no isolated farmhouses, no settlements
- 5:31hidden amongst the trees.
- 5:34Beyond the verge stretched only dense
- 5:36woodland and open snow-covered ground.
- 5:39Yet somehow the object maintained its
- 5:42speed, gliding through the darkness
- 5:45alongside them.
- 5:47Without warning, it then altered course
- 5:49and began moving back towards the road.
- 5:53Both women could only watch as it
- 5:54crossed the intervening distance with
- 5:56startling speed.
- 5:58Within moments, it had risen above them.
- 6:01As it passed overhead, both experienced
- 6:04intense ringing in their ears,
- 6:06accompanied by a strange pressure in
- 6:08their heads.
- 6:10Then, just as suddenly, it was gone.
- 6:15The object shot away into the darkness
- 6:17ahead, covering what appeared to be
- 6:19several hundred meters in only a few
- 6:21seconds before descending sharply behind
- 6:23a line of trees bordering the road.
- 6:27For a brief moment, both women feared
- 6:30they had just witnessed an air crash.
- 6:36Coutinan eased her foot off the
- 6:37accelerator and eventually brought the
- 6:39vehicle to a halt.
- 6:41Sitting in silence, the pair stared
- 6:43through the windscreen towards the point
- 6:45where the object had disappeared. They
- 6:47expected flames, smoke, some indication
- 6:51that whatever had plunged beyond the
- 6:52tree line had struck the ground. But
- 6:55there was nothing. The forest remained
- 6:58dark and silent. No explosion echoed
- 7:01through the trees. No fire illuminated
- 7:03the snow. There was not even the
- 7:06faintest suggestion of any kind of
- 7:07wreckage.
- 7:09Then
- 7:11something moved.
- 7:13A dark shape emerged from the shadows
- 7:15beneath the trees.
- 7:17The figure appeared only briefly before
- 7:19launching itself upwards into the air.
- 7:22It landed several feet further, paused,
- 7:26and then repeated the motion.
- 7:28Roughly the size of a small child, it
- 7:30neither walked nor ran. Instead, it
- 7:34advanced by means of a series of
- 7:36peculiar leaps that carried it steadily
- 7:38from the treeine towards the road.
- 7:41Stranger still, each leap appeared
- 7:44almost weightless.
- 7:46For the briefest instant, the figure
- 7:48seemed to just hang, suspended above the
- 7:51ground before descending once more. With
- 7:55every bound, it drew closer.
- 7:58What had first appeared as little more
- 7:59than a silhouette gradually emerged from
- 8:02the darkness, its outline becoming
- 8:04clearer in the ambient glow of the
- 8:06headlights.
- 8:08Neither woman could determine exactly
- 8:10what they were looking at.
- 8:12Most disturbing of all, however, was the
- 8:14growing sense that it was not simply
- 8:16crossing the road by chance, but was
- 8:18deliberately approaching their vehicle.
- 8:22Then, with one final leap, the figure
- 8:25landed in the middle of the road
- 8:28directly ahead of their car.
- 8:31For the first time, fully illuminated by
- 8:33the glare of the headlights, Coutinan
- 8:36and her friend were able to see it
- 8:38clearly.
- 8:42The two witnesses would later describe
- 8:45the figure standing in the road before
- 8:46them as being roughly 3 ft in height and
- 8:49possessing a noticeably slender build.
- 8:52The figure appeared to be dressed in a
- 8:53dark suit of some description, described
- 8:56as green or brown in color. Covering its
- 8:59head was what looked to be a metallic
- 9:01helmet, rounded in shape and vaguely
- 9:03reminiscent of those worn by deep sea
- 9:06divers.
- 9:07The visor or viewing port completely
- 9:10obscured the features of the wearer,
- 9:12lending the figure an impersonal and
- 9:14deeply unsettling appearance.
- 9:18For several moments, the entity simply
- 9:20remained where it was. Neither woman
- 9:23could later recall any obvious movement,
- 9:25gesture, or attempt at communication.
- 9:28Yet both were left with a distinct
- 9:30impression that the figure was studying
- 9:32them just as intently as they were
- 9:34studying it.
- 9:36Then something changed.
- 9:40The figure appeared to draw itself
- 9:42upright, its posture becoming noticeably
- 9:45more rigid.
- 9:47Slowly, it turned towards the vehicle
- 9:49and fixed its attention upon the two
- 9:51occupants inside.
- 9:53The entity neither approached the car
- 9:55nor displayed any overtly threatening
- 9:57behavior. Yet both women would later
- 10:00describe experiencing an overwhelming
- 10:02sense of fear as its attention settled
- 10:05upon them. It was not merely the shock
- 10:08of seeing something so bizarre standing
- 10:10in the middle of a remote road. Rather,
- 10:13it was the growing realization that
- 10:15whatever they were looking at seemed
- 10:17fully aware of their presence.
- 10:20and it was looking back.
- 10:24Whether this reaction stemmed from the
- 10:26figure's unusual appearance, the
- 10:28circumstances of the encounter, or some
- 10:30other factor entirely is impossible to
- 10:32determine.
- 10:34What is clear is that neither woman
- 10:36wished to remain there any longer than
- 10:38necessary.
- 10:39Cutin pressed her foot hard against the
- 10:42accelerator and sent the vehicle surging
- 10:45forwards.
- 10:47As the car sped past the figure, neither
- 10:49occupant dared take their eyes from it.
- 10:52According to her account, the figure
- 10:54launched itself upwards once again
- 10:57before disappearing into the darkness
- 10:59beyond the road.
- 11:01Several days would pass before either
- 11:03witness found the courage to report what
- 11:05they had experienced, and it was only
- 11:07after considerable hesitation that they
- 11:10eventually decided to speak about the
- 11:12incident.
- 11:13Before they had the opportunity to do
- 11:15so, however, another encounter would
- 11:18take place. This time, the consequences
- 11:22for those involved would prove even more
- 11:24profound.
- 11:29The morning of the 5th of February,
- 11:311971, had dawn gray and overcast.
- 11:35Low cloud hung over the Finnish
- 11:37countryside, whilst a persistent cold
- 11:39seemed to seep through every layer of
- 11:41clothing, no matter how heavily one
- 11:43dressed.
- 11:45For Peta Alianter and Escock, however,
- 11:48such conditions were simply an accepted
- 11:51part of life.
- 11:53The two young lumberjacks had spent the
- 11:55day working in the woodland near their
- 11:56home village of Kongascula.
- 12:00It was physically demanding labor made
- 12:02no easier by the snow-covered terrain
- 12:04and the steadily falling temperature.
- 12:07As afternoon gradually gave way to
- 12:09evening, both men began to feel the
- 12:12effects of the worsening conditions, and
- 12:14it was eventually agreed that they would
- 12:16finish earlier than usual and continue
- 12:18the remaining work another day.
- 12:21It was whilst preparing to leave that
- 12:23Alianter noticed something unusual.
- 12:27Having finished his final task, he was
- 12:29in the process of securing his chainsaw
- 12:32when a movement above the treeine caught
- 12:34his attention.
- 12:36Looking up, he became aware of a strange
- 12:39object hovering above a stand of pines
- 12:42some distance away.
- 12:44The object appeared metallic in
- 12:46construction and vaguely discshaped,
- 12:49though not in a manner often associated
- 12:51with popular depictions of flying
- 12:53saucers.
- 12:55Ali Ranter would later compare it to two
- 12:57shallow metal dishes placed one on top
- 12:59of the other. The structure was
- 13:02estimated to be approximately 15 ft in
- 13:04diameter and supported by four slender
- 13:07appendages extending downwards from the
- 13:09underside. These resembled landing
- 13:12struts.
- 13:14The craft hung motionless above the
- 13:16forest, apparently suspended in midair,
- 13:19and yet produced none of the noise one
- 13:21would ordinarily associate with a
- 13:23helicopter or aircraft.
- 13:26There was no engine note, no mechanical
- 13:28vibration, and no disturbance of the
- 13:31surrounding trees. It simply hovered
- 13:34there in silence.
- 13:37Then the object began to descend.
- 13:40The movement was smooth and deliberate
- 13:42as though it was lowering towards the
- 13:44ground under control.
- 13:50Gradually, it settled into a small
- 13:51clearing approximately 50 m from where
- 13:54he stood.
- 13:56His colleague was still occupied with a
- 13:58tree some distance away and appeared
- 14:00completely unaware that anything unusual
- 14:02was taking place.
- 14:05An opening had appeared in the underside
- 14:07of the craft. From this aperture emerged
- 14:10a figure.
- 14:12The being stood no taller than a young
- 14:15child and appeared dressed in a dark
- 14:17green one piece suit that clung tightly
- 14:20to its body.
- 14:22Covering its head was a metallic helmet
- 14:25similar in appearance to that later
- 14:27described by Sena Coutin and her
- 14:29companion.
- 14:31Set into the front was a single dark
- 14:33visor which completely concealed the
- 14:35features of the being.
- 14:38For several seconds, Aliant simply
- 14:41stared. He could see no hands, nor could
- 14:44he distinguish any feet. The limbs
- 14:48appeared to end without the features one
- 14:50would naturally expect to find there.
- 14:54As it left the craft and began crossing
- 14:56the snow-covered clearing, it did not
- 14:58appear to walk in any conventional
- 15:00sense.
- 15:02Instead, it advanced by means of a
- 15:04series of short gliding motions, rising
- 15:07slightly above the ground before
- 15:09settling back down again.
- 15:12Despite the fresh snow covering the
- 15:14clearing, it seemed to leave little
- 15:16trace of its passage, and with each
- 15:18silent movement, it drew steadily closer
- 15:22to where the young lumberjack was
- 15:24standing.
- 15:27It was not until Snack completed the
- 15:29final cuts on the tree he had been
- 15:31working on that he finally turned his
- 15:33attention back towards his colleague.
- 15:37Standing some distance away, Alianter
- 15:39appeared transfixed, staring at a small
- 15:42figure that was slowly advancing across
- 15:45the snow towards him.
- 15:47Most alarming of all was the manner in
- 15:49which it was approaching.
- 15:52The figure had raised both of its
- 15:53strange limbs and appeared to be
- 15:56extending them towards Alanta.
- 15:59Whether this represented a greeting, an
- 16:01attempt at communication, or something
- 16:03more sinister, neither man could know.
- 16:07To Snack, however, the sight looked
- 16:10unmistakably threatening.
- 16:13Reacting instinctively, he started his
- 16:15chainsaw and began running in the
- 16:18direction of the figure.
- 16:20The sudden roar of the motor shattered
- 16:22the stillness that had settled over the
- 16:23scene, but the effect was immediate.
- 16:27Instead of continuing towards Aliant, it
- 16:30abruptly altered course and began
- 16:32gliding away across the snow.
- 16:35Moments earlier, Aliant had appeared
- 16:38rooted to the spot.
- 16:40Now, seeing the strange visitor
- 16:42withdraw, he seemed to regain control of
- 16:44himself. He broke into a run and began
- 16:48pursuing the figure as it headed back
- 16:50towards the waiting craft.
- 16:53Together, the two lumberjacks crossed
- 16:55the clearing.
- 16:57Set into the side of the metallic object
- 16:59were three square sections that appeared
- 17:02partially translucent.
- 17:04Both men would later report being able
- 17:06to see movement behind them. There were
- 17:09silhouettes.
- 17:10Several dark figures similar in size to
- 17:13the entity they were pursuing appeared
- 17:15to be moving about within the interior
- 17:17of the craft.
- 17:19The being itself was now rapidly
- 17:21approaching an opening in the underside
- 17:23of the object. It was midway through one
- 17:26final glide when Alianter made a sudden
- 17:29decision.
- 17:30Rather than allowing the figure to
- 17:32escape, he lunged forwards.
- 17:35For a brief moment, it appeared as
- 17:37though he might actually succeed in
- 17:39capturing it. His hand closed around the
- 17:42lower portion of the entity's right limb
- 17:44as he attempted to pull it back towards
- 17:46the ground.
- 17:48Ali Rant later described being
- 17:50overwhelmed by a surge of pain so
- 17:52intense that it felt as though a
- 17:54powerful electric current had passed
- 17:56directly through his body.
- 17:58The sensation forced him to release his
- 18:01grip, stumbling backwards as he did so.
- 18:04The figure continued into the craft and
- 18:07the opening sealed shut behind it.
- 18:11For several seconds, nothing happened,
- 18:14but then a deep buzzing sound began to
- 18:16emanate from the object.
- 18:19It rapidly increased in intensity until
- 18:21the entire craft suddenly shot upwards
- 18:23into the sky.
- 18:25A blast of hot air and wind struck both
- 18:27men with surprising force as the object
- 18:30accelerated away from the clearing and
- 18:32vanished into the low cloud overhead.
- 18:35Just as abruptly as it had appeared, it
- 18:38was gone.
- 18:40The encounter had lasted only minutes,
- 18:42yet both men were left struggling to
- 18:44comprehend what they had witnessed.
- 18:47Alianter was clutching his right hand.
- 18:51When the pair carefully removed his
- 18:53heavy work glove, they discovered a
- 18:55substantial burn covering part of the
- 18:58skin beneath.
- 19:00The injury was severe enough to require
- 19:02medical attention and would take months
- 19:04to fully heal.
- 19:06Even then, it left behind permanent
- 19:08scarring that remained visible for the
- 19:10rest of his life.
- 19:13The following day, the two men reported
- 19:15the incident to the local police.
- 19:18The officers who interviewed them took
- 19:20the matter seriously enough to visit the
- 19:22site for themselves.
- 19:24There, within the snow-covered clearing,
- 19:27investigators discovered a series of
- 19:28impressions consistent with the landing
- 19:30supports described by the witnesses.
- 19:34For the police, the marks did not prove
- 19:36the existence of extraterrestrial
- 19:38visitors. They did, however, demonstrate
- 19:41that something had occurred.
- 19:44And perhaps more significantly, they
- 19:46appeared to lend further credibility to
- 19:48the encounter reported only two days
- 19:50earlier by the two women traveling
- 19:52through the forests of Kaminki.
- 19:58The various reports describing unusual
- 20:00aerial objects and their apparent
- 20:02occupants in the Canula region were
- 20:04confined to a remarkably short period
- 20:06during the early 1970s.
- 20:10Yet, whilst the encounters themselves
- 20:12were brief, they remain intriguing for a
- 20:15number of reasons.
- 20:17Perhaps the most striking is the extent
- 20:19to which they appear to mirror reports
- 20:21emerging from other parts of the world
- 20:23during the same period.
- 20:26Throughout the 1960s and 1970s,
- 20:29witnesses across Europe, North America,
- 20:31and the Soviet Union described
- 20:33encounters involving strange aerial
- 20:35craft and humanoid figures whose
- 20:37appearance often shared a number of
- 20:38surprising similarities.
- 20:41Many of these reports originated in
- 20:43isolated rural locations and involved
- 20:46individuals who had no apparent
- 20:48connection to one another. In several
- 20:51cases, witnesses described entities of
- 20:53unusually small stature plaid in tight
- 20:56fitting suits and concealed behind
- 20:58helmets or featureless visors.
- 21:01Others reported unusual physiological
- 21:03effects following their encounters,
- 21:06including burns, temporary paralysis,
- 21:09ringing in the ears, feelings of intense
- 21:11pressure, and overwhelming sensations of
- 21:14fear.
- 21:16Whether these similarities represent
- 21:18coincidence, cultural influence, or
- 21:20evidence of some underlying phenomenon
- 21:22remains the subject of considerable
- 21:24debate.
- 21:26Amongst the better known examples is the
- 21:29experience of former police officer
- 21:31Herbert Shurmer in Nebraska during 1967.
- 21:35Whilst investigating reports of a
- 21:37strange light, Shurmer claimed to have
- 21:40encountered a landed craft and several
- 21:42humanoid occupants before later
- 21:44discovering a series of unusual physical
- 21:46symptoms and apparent gaps in his
- 21:48memory.
- 21:50Likewise, in 1973,
- 21:53a witness in Folkville, Alabama,
- 21:55reported encountering a strange metallic
- 21:57humanoid figure along a rural road.
- 22:00Described as small in stature and clad
- 22:03in what appeared to be a reflective
- 22:04suit, the entity was said to move in an
- 22:07unusual manner, leaping and bounding
- 22:09away at remarkable speed when
- 22:11approached.
- 22:13The incident, often referred to as the
- 22:15Alabama Metalman, remains one of the
- 22:18more unusual humanoid encounters
- 22:20reported in the United States during
- 22:22that period.
- 22:24Finland's proximity to Russia provides
- 22:26another interesting point of comparison.
- 22:29The former Soviet Union generated a
- 22:32substantial number of UFO reports
- 22:33throughout the 20th century.
- 22:36Perhaps the most famous is the alleged
- 22:38landing that reportedly took place in
- 22:40the city of Runes in 1989, where
- 22:43witnesses claimed to have observed a
- 22:45craft descend into a public park before
- 22:48several unusual occupants emerged and
- 22:50interacted with those nearby.
- 22:54Skeptics have naturally argued that such
- 22:56stories are the product of
- 22:58misunderstanding, exaggeration, or
- 23:00folklore adapting itself to a
- 23:02technological age. Certainly,
- 23:05extraordinary claims demand
- 23:06extraordinary evidence.
- 23:09Yet, what makes cases such as Kinella
- 23:12difficult to dismiss outright is that
- 23:14they often contain details that are
- 23:16unexpectedly difficult to explain.
- 23:18In the Finnish incidents, there were
- 23:20multiple witnesses, reported physical
- 23:23injuries, and observations made
- 23:25independently of one another. More
- 23:28significantly, the encounters occurred
- 23:30years before the internet made the rapid
- 23:32sharing of such stories possible. The
- 23:35witnesses involved were ordinary people.
- 23:38A pair of women traveling home along a
- 23:40rural road. Two lumberjacks finishing a
- 23:42day's work in the forest. None appeared
- 23:45to have been seeking publicity. None
- 23:48appeared to have benefited from their
- 23:50claims. And yet all four emerged with
- 23:53remarkably similar descriptions of both
- 23:55the craft and its apparent occupant.
- 23:59Whether those similarities point towards
- 24:01an extraordinary reality or merely an
- 24:03extraordinary coincidence is a question
- 24:06that remains unanswered.
- 24:08What is certain is that more than half a
- 24:10century later, the Kennel encounters
- 24:13continue to occupy a curious place
- 24:15within UFO history. a small cluster of
- 24:19reports from a remote corner of Finland,
- 24:22which despite the passing years, remain
- 24:25every bit as strange as the day they
- 24:28were first recorded.
