The Journey To Recover Dave Jonsson and Raven Rivera — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Okay.
- 0:00>> Hey, everybody. Welcome. This is uh Dave
- 0:03here and I'm joined by my really good
- 0:05friend Raven. Bro, how are you doing?
- 0:08>> I'm doing good, healing up. Feels good.
- 0:11>> Yeah, we're going to get into your story
- 0:13in a moment. Give us a little bit about
- 0:14where are you right now? Where Where in
- 0:15the world are you?
- 0:17>> I am in Pennsylvania right now uh at my
- 0:19parents' house for the next 2 months to
- 0:21heal up in outpatient recovery before I
- 0:24return back to you know my normal life
- 0:26in South Carolina for right now.
- 0:29>> Come on, man. And uh man, I've I've met
- 0:31you a few times at the skate conferences
- 0:34and um you're honestly an inspiration of
- 0:37faith and as someone who skates and
- 0:40really has multiple disciplines,
- 0:42surfing, skateboarding. We're going to
- 0:43hear more about your story in a moment.
- 0:46Um I want to cast up some vision for our
- 0:48time together. I've written a book
- 0:50called Recover.
- 0:52And we Sometimes when we think of
- 0:53recovery, we immediately think of AA or
- 0:55we think of like kind of drugs and
- 0:57alcohol.
- 0:58But the journey of recovery is really a
- 1:02time where we lose our cover and I'm
- 1:05going to explain that in a moment and we
- 1:07are trying to regain it. We are
- 1:09recovering.
- 1:10And um so, I'm going to say a word of
- 1:12prayer and then Raven, I'm super honored
- 1:14to get to have this conversation with
- 1:15you and to talk through recovery and
- 1:17what it looks like and how that's um
- 1:19happening in your life. And so, let's
- 1:20just pray together. Can't wait to get
- 1:22into the content. So, God, I just thank
- 1:23you so much for Raven. Thank you that
- 1:25before the creation of the world, you
- 1:27thought of him, you knew him. And Lord,
- 1:29you are knitting a story that is uh I
- 1:32know for your glory and his great joy.
- 1:35Lord, I pray for anybody who's listening
- 1:36right now who may be going through
- 1:38recovery, whether it's physical,
- 1:39emotional,
- 1:40spiritual. Lord, I pray in Jesus' mighty
- 1:43name, Father God, that we would recover
- 1:45well.
- 1:46And um and Lord, that you bless this
- 1:48conversation in Jesus' name.
- 1:50Amen.
- 1:51So, Raven, let me um share with you a
- 1:53little bit about how I got this idea and
- 1:55and um
- 1:57So, I in the last like three or four
- 1:59months a lot of my friends have been
- 2:02undergoing recovery, specifically
- 2:04physical recovery. And you know me,
- 2:07uh I'm a pro skateboarder and I attend a
- 2:09lot of skate contests and one of the
- 2:11things that you're constantly
- 2:13encountering
- 2:14is as a pro skateboarder either you're
- 2:16in recovery yourself from an injury
- 2:19or you have a close friend who is also
- 2:21in or who is in recovery because it's
- 2:23just the way that we
- 2:24we kind of live. And um so as someone
- 2:27who
- 2:28is hopefully pushing out content that
- 2:30helps people, I began thinking and I
- 2:32started to feel really called from the
- 2:34Lord to
- 2:35you know, to speak to this this
- 2:37uh let's just say this this um
- 2:40this topic, recovery, which has a
- 2:43million books already. Like why would I
- 2:45why would I contribute to something that
- 2:47a body of work that already has already
- 2:49a thousand books?
- 2:51When I but started to realize that
- 2:53actually the simplicity of the word
- 2:56recover
- 2:57I when I looked online, there wasn't a
- 3:00book that connected the dots
- 3:03with this idea that you and I we really
- 3:06appreciate cover. That is to say we got
- 3:08our skin covered.
- 3:10Uh
- 3:11when we're healthy, we got our areas of
- 3:14influence covered, we got our work
- 3:15covered, we got our bills covered.
- 3:18Uh we like cover actually. Uh
- 3:20skateboarders, when it rains, guess
- 3:22what? We want cover.
- 3:24And
- 3:26but there are times where we lose our
- 3:27cover.
- 3:28Specifically, maybe our skin ruptures
- 3:30and guess what? We now we're seeing
- 3:32muscle, we're seeing tendons. Well,
- 3:34that's not good. Right?
- 3:36Or something happens emotionally in our
- 3:38lives
- 3:39there's a rupture and guess what? Now
- 3:41we're no longer able to go to work.
- 3:43Or we have anxiety and now literally we
- 3:46need to get someone to cover our shift.
- 3:50And so I began thinking and meditating
- 3:52on this idea a lot. And you know what? I
- 3:53started reading the scriptures.
- 3:55And bro,
- 3:57this idea
- 3:58started blowing my mind. Even Genesis
- 4:01chapter 2 and 3.
- 4:04Adam and Eve,
- 4:06they sin.
- 4:07And the first thing that they look for
- 4:10is to cover.
- 4:12They try to make with fig leaves
- 4:16>> Yeah.
- 4:16>> Then I
- 4:17Then I started thinking about Job, if
- 4:19you remember.
- 4:20A guy who goes through the greatest
- 4:22journey of recovery in the Bible. Well,
- 4:25if you remember,
- 4:27how does that story start? It says that
- 4:28Lucifer or Satan
- 4:31goes before God. And he you know what
- 4:32the question he asked him? He says this.
- 4:34He says,
- 4:36"If you remove your hedge of protection
- 4:38or cover over Job, he will you're going
- 4:41to find out what's underneath. He's
- 4:42going to curse you to your face."
- 4:45And so Job's story is literally a whole
- 4:47story about a man who lost his spiritual
- 4:50covering.
- 4:52And in so doing, he lost his family. His
- 4:55skin became like leprous, like his
- 4:57covering every every ounce of cover for
- 4:59Job, gone.
- 5:01And what was underneath, what was
- 5:02exposed, was character.
- 5:05And I can get into it. I mean, I can get
- 5:07into it in into the book. You know that
- 5:09um
- 5:10Satan in Ex- Ezekiel 28, you know what
- 5:13his title is in Ezekiel 28?
- 5:16Oh oh covering angel.
- 5:20So, what I believe is that God has
- 5:22living veils in heaven because God's
- 5:25essence is so pure and so holy that the
- 5:27scriptures say that you can't look at
- 5:29God like in the in the peak of heaven,
- 5:31you can't see him and live.
- 5:34So, veils are an act of mercy. And I
- 5:36believe that Lucifer, being a
- 5:37high-ranked angel, was somehow a
- 5:39covering angel.
- 5:41And so, here's here's a mind-blowing
- 5:44thing that that I've come to believe
- 5:45that that is that heaven is in recovery.
- 5:49And that Jesus Christ on the cross
- 5:53when he s- took upon the sin of the
- 5:56world, you know what what he did is he
- 5:58shed his blood and now whoever is
- 6:00covered spiritually
- 6:03by the blood of Jesus
- 6:05has now the covering that heavenly
- 6:07father looks down on required
- 6:11to well, to get to heaven.
- 6:14So, what started off is literally me
- 6:16just writing a little book about getting
- 6:18better
- 6:20started
- 6:21a whole
- 6:23theological,
- 6:25psychological
- 6:27endeavor when I started to think about
- 6:30wait a sec. When we injure ourselves
- 6:33it's actually a time when we lose that
- 6:36essence of cover.
- 6:37And but here's the and that's the
- 6:39problem, but here's the opportunity
- 6:42is that when we lose our cover
- 6:44it's an opportunity to to be exposed of
- 6:47what's underneath.
- 6:48And sometimes there's not only bacteria,
- 6:50physical bacteria, guess what?
- 6:52There's emotional trauma, spiritual
- 6:55things. And so, when we are in that
- 6:58moment of exposure
- 7:01it's an opportunity to heal what's
- 7:03underneath, to heal what's hidden.
- 7:06And so, that's what I've been thinking
- 7:07about, man. That's what I've been
- 7:08writing about. And so, I wanted to get
- 7:10into your story of recovery.
- 7:13And and to kind of talk through this
- 7:16idea together
- 7:18your story, bro, because take us back to
- 7:21that moment
- 7:22where you're skating, you're on a trip,
- 7:25you're surfing with PSA
- 7:28Veritas skates ministries. I know his
- 7:30crew well.
- 7:32One day, you're you're healthy, you're
- 7:35young, you got things covered, you know,
- 7:38you you things are going all right.
- 7:40And then the next thing you know, if you
- 7:42could just lead us Raven back to kind of
- 7:44what happened for the person who's
- 7:47watching right now who um
- 7:49you know, doesn't know your story.
- 7:51Take us back to that moment, bro.
- 7:54>> Yeah, for sure. Um it was June 27th. Um
- 7:57and I've had a lot of crazy things
- 7:59happen the last year. And so
- 8:02I went down to see VSM, my friends in
- 8:05Georgia in Brunswick, Georgia. And um
- 8:08they were saying how they wanted to go
- 8:09surfing that weekend. And so they would
- 8:11we were going to hop in a van and go to
- 8:13Jacksonville and surf. And I've only
- 8:15been surfing a few times. I'm more of a
- 8:16skateboarder. So, you know, I went down
- 8:19there, we hung out, we got in the van,
- 8:21we went to Florida.
- 8:23And um you know, I stood up on a few
- 8:25waves. And then there was one wave where
- 8:29I caught it and then I fell off the
- 8:30board.
- 8:31And I didn't hit the bottom of the
- 8:33ocean, didn't hit any rocks or coral
- 8:34reefs, nothing like that. I was just
- 8:37solely in the water floating.
- 8:39And the waves, like water's a powerful
- 8:41force and it kind of hyperextended my
- 8:45back, almost like scorpion.
- 8:47And um as a filmer and skateboarder,
- 8:50you're always hunched forward, you know?
- 8:52And surfing's one of those board sports
- 8:54where you arch your back to paddle out
- 8:56or to get up.
- 8:57And so my back wasn't used to that. And
- 8:59so I felt a little sore, but I kept
- 9:01surfing.
- 9:02And a few waves later, I stand up on the
- 9:05board and as I'm bringing my front leg
- 9:08up onto the board, it was like a noodle.
- 9:11It like dragged onto the board.
- 9:14And I remember thinking like, why does
- 9:17my front leg feel like a thousand
- 9:19pounds?
- 9:20That it took everything in me to get it
- 9:22onto the board. That was so weird. And
- 9:24so
- 9:25thank God I got out of the water cuz you
- 9:28know, if I had stayed there and was
- 9:30paralyzed in the water, like I wouldn't
- 9:32be able to tread water or swim. I would
- 9:34have
- 9:35almost drowned maybe, you know?
- 9:37Um and I was kind of far away from my
- 9:38friends. And so,
- 9:40I remember I was sitting there and my
- 9:42Jake- my friend Jacob, he used to uh
- 9:44be a part of Ride Nature. He like
- 9:46paddled over. He's like, "Yo, you good?"
- 9:48And I was like, "Dude, something feels
- 9:50like really off." And um, so we paddled
- 9:54back to shore. And, you know, I'm just
- 9:57like trying to walk it off. And I'm
- 9:59walking with him and I fell to the
- 10:02floor.
- 10:03I was like, "What's going on?" So, I
- 10:04stand back up, no problem. Walk a little
- 10:06bit more. I fall to the ground.
- 10:09And then I stand back up, walk a little
- 10:11bit more, and then I fell to the ground.
- 10:13And then from that moment on, it was
- 10:16like 40 It was like 45 minutes after my
- 10:18injury, I couldn't feel or move anything
- 10:21from the waist down.
- 10:22And I couldn't even sit up. Like, I had
- 10:24to use like both my hands to sit up. And
- 10:28I looked at my friend Jacob, he thought
- 10:29I was joking. I'm like, "Dude, for real.
- 10:31Like, touch my leg. Like, I can't I
- 10:32can't do anything." And so,
- 10:35you know, I'm sitting there and I work
- 10:37in the medical field. So, in my head,
- 10:39I'm like, I pray this is not
- 10:41neurological. But, in the back of my
- 10:43head, I'm like, it probably is, you
- 10:44know? And I'm sitting there, we called
- 10:46the lifeguards over. They throw me on a
- 10:48backboard and they do all their checks
- 10:51on me. Check my reflexes in my legs,
- 10:53nothing's moving. And I'm like, "Oh,
- 10:56man."
- 10:57Like, what is going on? And
- 11:00from everything that I've experienced
- 11:02this last year, part of me in my heart
- 11:05knew that this was God trying to slow me
- 11:08down to teach me something. You know?
- 11:11Um, of course, the adrenaline was going
- 11:12a little bit, but in my head, I'm like,
- 11:15"This is one of my biggest fears and it
- 11:17happens it's happening right now."
- 11:19And, you know, all I have right now is
- 11:23God and I just need to talk to him
- 11:25through this whole process, you know?
- 11:27So, you know, I go to the They throw me
- 11:28in the ambulance and that's what I do
- 11:30for a living. And so, it was kind of
- 11:31like funny to be on the other end of it.
- 11:34And uh
- 11:36I go to the ER,
- 11:37and
- 11:38you know, they throw me into the MRI for
- 11:40like 3 hours,
- 11:42do an hour of x-rays, and they told me
- 11:44they're like, you have surfer's
- 11:46myelopathy. And I'm like, what is that?
- 11:48And they're like, pretty much it's kind
- 11:49of like when you roll your ankle and it
- 11:51gets swollen, you rolled your spinal
- 11:53cord, and it's swollen. And so, there's
- 11:56no signals getting past your lower back
- 11:58right now.
- 11:59And they said with neurological
- 12:01injuries, the outcome is so
- 12:03unpredictable. But this is the crazy
- 12:06part. They said for you to get
- 12:08inflammation in your spine without it
- 12:10fracturing
- 12:12is like a 1% chance out of all spinal
- 12:15injuries. They said that there's only
- 12:17like 400 and something cases of it ever.
- 12:20And that's when I was like, man, this is
- 12:23seriously divine intervention. But also,
- 12:25what was divine intervention was that
- 12:27where I landed was I think the fifth
- 12:31best spinal rehabilitation facility in
- 12:35the country. Which is so crazy. Yeah,
- 12:38they have technology from like Asia that
- 12:41only three facilities in this country
- 12:43have. And so, where I landed was like
- 12:45super super like super super blessed. It
- 12:48was like God knew obviously this was
- 12:50going to happen, but also his hand was
- 12:52there to catch me with all these other
- 12:54factors, like where I was, the fact I
- 12:56didn't drive there and try to drive
- 12:57myself to the
- 12:58to the hospital. Like that and I got out
- 13:00of the water at the time. All the timing
- 13:02and the the location, everything. And
- 13:05so,
- 13:06I remember like sitting there, and after
- 13:09all these crazy things have happened to
- 13:11me this past year, I really thought like
- 13:13I was out of like God's hedge like out
- 13:17of that covering, you know? And then
- 13:19when this happened, obviously like my
- 13:20human fleshly side thought that man,
- 13:22like is God paying attention? Like does
- 13:24he see all the stuff I went through the
- 13:26past year, and then of course this
- 13:28happens like what's going on? But then I
- 13:30also thought about all the times from
- 13:33then and now in this injury that God was
- 13:35there to like catch me cuz it could have
- 13:37been way worse. I could have been in the
- 13:38middle of nowhere. I could have not had
- 13:39friends you know, around. And so
- 13:43I was like super super thankful for that
- 13:45and that was like super reassuring that
- 13:47like yeah, this happened and it sucks.
- 13:49But
- 13:50like God still is in control of all
- 13:53these things cuz that was a one in a
- 13:54million chance injury, but also it was a
- 13:56one in a million chance I would end up
- 13:57at this facility right down the road,
- 14:00you know.
- 14:01So that was what was going through my
- 14:03head the first week at least, you know.
- 14:05>> Um
- 14:06>> Yeah.
- 14:07>> So
- 14:08the um acronym that I use for the book
- 14:11is ruptured
- 14:12>> Mhm.
- 14:12>> which is the moment that
- 14:14the skin opens
- 14:16the spine twists. It's the rupture. It's
- 14:19the It's the break.
- 14:20>> Mhm.
- 14:21>> And then E is for exposure.
- 14:24And because well, when the skin breaks
- 14:28the muscle's exposed or the tendons are
- 14:30exposed.
- 14:32In this case, it's a little different
- 14:34where it's an internal injury or when
- 14:36it's a multiple
- 14:38it's a little different, but
- 14:40nevertheless
- 14:41what happens is that we feel exposed.
- 14:44Oh my gosh, do we ever? Oh, I remember
- 14:46so I was in a plane accident.
- 14:49There was a time period where my family
- 14:50needed to help me get to the bathroom.
- 14:52>> Mhm.
- 14:54>> Um talking about exposed. I felt
- 14:56exposed. Not just that, but I felt
- 14:59my the things, my character, who I was.
- 15:02When you undergo that kind of stress
- 15:05you're not in your normal routine. You
- 15:07can't you can't muscle through things.
- 15:11Well
- 15:12you feel exposed.
- 15:14>> Mhm.
- 15:15>> Have you felt exposed in this season?
- 15:17>> Yes.
- 15:18Um I think a lot of skateboarders have
- 15:21gone through this
- 15:22That we make skateboarding like our
- 15:25identity. And of course that fluctuates
- 15:27up and down every day. It's not like you
- 15:28master it one day and then you're good
- 15:30the rest of your life. You know, some
- 15:31weeks you might feel like
- 15:33you're very like using it as your
- 15:35identity and then some days where you're
- 15:36not. And so when that happened and it
- 15:39took my legs away, not my arms but my
- 15:41legs,
- 15:42that was like a very specific like
- 15:44finger that God was like putting his
- 15:46finger on. It was like
- 15:48I was identifying more with like how
- 15:51good I was getting or the tricks I was
- 15:53able to do, stuff like that. And so when
- 15:56that was taken away,
- 15:57you know, and like I think when we're
- 15:59skateboarding trying to be better, we're
- 16:01striving for like, you know, more
- 16:03tricks, more style, more whatever
- 16:05without being thankful for the fact that
- 16:06we could just even ollie or kickflip,
- 16:09you know? And so
- 16:11you know, I remember thinking and
- 16:12praying to God, venting to him, being
- 16:14like, "God, like I'd be thankful just to
- 16:16walk with a cane the rest of my life,
- 16:18literally, you know, and be able to like
- 16:20use the bathroom on my own. You know,
- 16:22that was something I I took for granted,
- 16:24you know, and I'm out here like just
- 16:26trying to, you know, what more can I get
- 16:28with the tricks and stuff like that?"
- 16:30And so when this happened, you know, um
- 16:33my identity instantly switched to like I
- 16:36can never skateboard again. And so like
- 16:39what am I going to hold on to?
- 16:41And that is definitely, you know, your
- 16:43identity in God and
- 16:46how he sees you, you know? Because I
- 16:49think we want tricks so that other
- 16:51people, obviously for fun, but so that
- 16:53other people can look at us like a
- 16:55higher status skater maybe. And so when
- 16:58that's taken away, it's like who is the
- 17:01only person or the only thing that will
- 17:03see you just as valuable before the
- 17:05injury? And that's God, obviously.
- 17:07>> Just got it.
- 17:08Right there.
- 17:10C stands for moment of clarity. I
- 17:12remember when I was in the plane crash
- 17:14and my femur was broken, my knee was all
- 17:16twisted.
- 17:17I had to wait a couple weeks and all of
- 17:19a sudden I went to physiotherapy. I
- 17:20wasn't allowed to go to physiotherapy
- 17:22for the first like I think week or no,
- 17:24probably 2 weeks. It was like, you know,
- 17:25your body is like too messed up. I was
- 17:27all purple. I needed to like just my
- 17:29body like you know, and then I but then
- 17:32I wheeled myself into the physiotherapy.
- 17:35And
- 17:36when Pat, my
- 17:38who has laid out a plan for me,
- 17:40and and again, he didn't give me
- 17:42certainty that I was going to get
- 17:44better.
- 17:45But what that was was a it was a moment
- 17:47of clarity.
- 17:49It was a moment where I started to begin
- 17:51to see well, it I was far I was still in
- 17:53the tunnel, but I could see that if I
- 17:55was faithful with the process
- 17:58of physiotherapy,
- 18:00I ate right,
- 18:01then
- 18:02I there's a potential to get out of
- 18:04this.
- 18:05It's kind of like talk about surfing. I
- 18:07remember surfing one time and I write
- 18:08this in the book. I remember surfing in
- 18:09Hawaii and getting myself caught up in
- 18:11some really bad waves.
- 18:13And I was being plummeted. I was
- 18:15underneath the water getting hit by the
- 18:17surfboard.
- 18:18And I had no idea which way was up or
- 18:20down.
- 18:22And when all of a sudden I look and I
- 18:24see that the bubbles are going in the
- 18:26opposite direction.
- 18:28And the bubbles are going up, you know,
- 18:30but I was upside down.
- 18:32And what that gave me was it was a
- 18:33moment of clarity.
- 18:35I wasn't out of the water. I was still
- 18:37in it. But I knew which way was up.
- 18:40Have you had your moment of clarity yet?
- 18:43>> Yes. Um The moment of clarity was, you
- 18:47know,
- 18:47what God was trying to teach me, you
- 18:49know, um and how to make it out of this
- 18:52first spiritually. Cuz you know, it also
- 18:56occurred to me that like, you know, I
- 18:58don't want to have hope and like be
- 19:01doing good spiritually because I'm
- 19:02physing you know, I'm physically
- 19:04healing. You know, that's like a
- 19:05transaction I'm making with God. That
- 19:07shouldn't be made first. And so I wanted
- 19:10to hope to be spiritually and mentally.
- 19:13And um
- 19:15I think
- 19:16you know, I was asking myself like, what
- 19:18am I going to do? Like, obviously like
- 19:20which way is up, I guess, you know? I'm
- 19:22realizing all these things about myself,
- 19:24a lot of like sin I was still struggling
- 19:26with, like, you know? And I'm like, you
- 19:28know, what do I need to do? Do I need to
- 19:30stop this sin first? Do I need to do
- 19:32this? Do I need to do that first? And
- 19:33like
- 19:34I remember Paul said in the New
- 19:36Testament that like the greatest thing,
- 19:39cuz he experienced a lot and he's lost a
- 19:41lot. And he said that the greatest thing
- 19:42that he has come to realize is to just
- 19:44get to know God. Just get to know him,
- 19:47you know? All the hard stuff has been
- 19:49done already. Just get to know him. And
- 19:52so that's what I was doing. And you
- 19:54know, I had I was realizing and learning
- 19:56so many things that I'm like like I
- 19:58think I told you before like I was like
- 20:00writing it down and I'm like going to
- 20:01put something like something small
- 20:03together. And also just like organize my
- 20:05thoughts. But yes, just get to know God.
- 20:08Get to know him and talk to him.
- 20:10You know?
- 20:11>> Yeah.
- 20:12Yeah. That's huge, man.
- 20:14Moment of clarity is something that you
- 20:16need to arrive at. No one can give you
- 20:17your moment of clarity.
- 20:19>> Mhm.
- 20:20>> But it's it's the moment where all of a
- 20:22sudden um
- 20:23you know, when you there's when there's
- 20:24so much pain constantly, you can't find
- 20:26peace. Pain and peace don't go hand in
- 20:28hand.
- 20:30And but the moment that you're able to
- 20:32manage the pain and you're able to find
- 20:34any moment of peace, some
- 20:36it sometimes if it's you know, and God
- 20:37if God's grace finds you and and it
- 20:39does,
- 20:40you're able to find that moment of
- 20:41clarity.
- 20:42O is for ownership. Now, ownership in
- 20:46some cases, like if someone hurts you,
- 20:49well,
- 20:52you have to recognize that
- 20:54it's maybe not your your place to own.
- 20:55But here's what I I really believe is
- 20:57that God can't heal
- 21:00things that we are not willing to take
- 21:02ownership for.
- 21:04Now,
- 21:06you didn't own the wave. Wave didn't you
- 21:08know
- 21:09um
- 21:10For like you know and this happens many
- 21:11times with skateboarders. Sometimes
- 21:13we'll get injured because of our own
- 21:14stupidity, but sometimes someone rams
- 21:17into us at the skatepark. You know what
- 21:19I mean?
- 21:21But
- 21:22there is a real when we take ownership
- 21:25in our recovery for whatever portion. It
- 21:27may be only 25% of the pie. It could be
- 21:2990% of the pie. It could be 100% of the
- 21:31time. Like sometimes a lot of times we
- 21:34have to own 100% of it, you know.
- 21:37Uh but in your case I don't think it's a
- 21:38I don't think it's you know it it's not
- 21:40that's not the case.
- 21:42But ownership is a is a very powerful
- 21:44thing. It's it's looking at the journey
- 21:46of of injury and rupture
- 21:49and seeing which part of it you you can
- 21:52own. You know maybe it's like the fact
- 21:55that maybe you weren't ready to surf the
- 21:57size of waves that you were doing, you
- 21:58know, and
- 22:00and it's not to guilt it's not to guilt
- 22:02and shame, but it's rather to
- 22:05to to understand to come to a place of
- 22:07ownership and then to move forward.
- 22:10Uh for skateboarders this is really
- 22:11helpful because if we don't take
- 22:13ownership in our injury injuries, that
- 22:15is to say if we don't review our
- 22:17injuries and say
- 22:18man, well why did I get hurt? Was it
- 22:20because I was tired and skateboarding I
- 22:22should have just probably taken a seat
- 22:24or was I did
- 22:27I have had this happen so many times
- 22:28where my body will intuitively tell me
- 22:30at the end of my session
- 22:32Dave, you're tired.
- 22:34You skate enough. You've gotten enough
- 22:35skating in. It's time for you to sit
- 22:37down.
- 22:38But I don't listen to that.
- 22:40Instead, I'm I'm there. I'm wanting I'm
- 22:42wanting to be a part of the hype.
- 22:44>> Mhm.
- 22:44>> And um
- 22:46and then I'll get injured. I'll twist an
- 22:48ankle.
- 22:49You know, I that's happened so many
- 22:51times.
- 22:52Or I'm just getting to the session. I'm
- 22:54not warmed up enough yet, but the
- 22:56session's already going and I want to
- 22:57participate.
- 22:59And so then I'll try and go for
- 23:00something that my body ain't ready for
- 23:02yet.
- 23:03And then I'll get hurt. I'll pull a
- 23:04hamstring or something like that in that
- 23:06case.
- 23:08And
- 23:10uh in order to move forward, it's really
- 23:11important that we take ownership for
- 23:13whatever portion of the pie is ours.
- 23:16And sometimes it's a large portion,
- 23:18other times it's not.
- 23:20Uh have you ever thought about kind of
- 23:21ownership
- 23:22uh when it comes to your injury?
- 23:24>> Oh, for sure. Um
- 23:26with all the things that happened this
- 23:28past year, uh and it was like it was
- 23:30crazy, you know, I was um
- 23:32I was like homeless like one time and
- 23:34all this other stuff and
- 23:36um it made me very bitter inside. Um I
- 23:40didn't always I didn't really show it
- 23:41outwardly, but I did have like a falling
- 23:45out with
- 23:46uh like two or three friends and I own
- 23:49100% of that pie because of the way I
- 23:52acted. And they were one of the first
- 23:55ones to visit me in the hospital. And as
- 23:58soon as they walked into the room, the
- 24:00first thing I did was apologize to them.
- 24:02That was the very first thing. And it
- 24:05says that, you know, the peace of God,
- 24:07you know, it's like a peaceful feeling
- 24:08when it comes over you or over a
- 24:10situation.
- 24:11And it was just like I felt like I just
- 24:13took a heavy book bag off when that
- 24:15happened, you know? Cuz, you know,
- 24:16that's one of the things that
- 24:18>> You uh big heavy bag off, didn't you?
- 24:20>> Oh, yeah. Yeah, and it felt good.
- 24:23It felt good and like made me want to
- 24:24think of like who else have I done this
- 24:26to and just want to call them, you
- 24:27>> Yeah.
- 24:28>> Um
- 24:29and so that was like one of the first
- 24:31things I owned, you know, obviously the
- 24:32second thing I owned was like and I
- 24:34admitted it to God right away in the
- 24:36ambulance. I was like, "God, I've made
- 24:38so many otherworldly things that I
- 24:40wanted to use to as ministry." You know,
- 24:42I started worshipping the creation
- 24:44rather than the creator. And that was a
- 24:46big thing I owned, too. But um another
- 24:49thing I owned was not being thankful for
- 24:51I already had, you know, I'm in my 20s
- 24:53and I'm like trying to do a lot of
- 24:55things to get my life together with like
- 24:56my career, my finances, and I was always
- 24:59striving to be better like that cuz I
- 25:00would compare my life to other people
- 25:02who have their stuff together. And um
- 25:05you know, that the rush of that, you
- 25:07know, doesn't leave any room for rest.
- 25:10And so, now that I'm like in a bed and I
- 25:13can't move, I'm being forced to rest and
- 25:16to just take this time and reflect. And
- 25:18it made me thankful, like I remember the
- 25:19first time I was able to use the
- 25:21bathroom on my own kind of. I just like
- 25:23thanked God. I was like,
- 25:25>> Oh my goodness, this is the best thing
- 25:26ever, you know.
- 25:27>> Bathroom by yourself. I remember that
- 25:28after plane crash, man. Oh my god.
- 25:31You know?
- 25:32>> Yeah.
- 25:33>> Yeah.
- 25:34So, my body was
- 25:36my body was all purple for like
- 25:38three, four weeks after.
- 25:40>> Oh, seriously?
- 25:41>> Yeah, cuz the impact of the plane crash
- 25:43was so great on my body that
- 25:45there's so much dead blood and then
- 25:48and then it it started off, my whole
- 25:49body was purple, but then by the end it
- 25:50was like my legs were like deep purple
- 25:52cuz all the blood dead blood went down.
- 25:55>> Oh, yeah.
- 25:57>> But I remember, yeah, using the first
- 25:58the bathroom for the first time and
- 26:00stuff like that. But it's funny how
- 26:01injuries they
- 26:03they actually lead us and push us to
- 26:05deal with some of the things. Like it's
- 26:06like we lose our cover.
- 26:08And what's exposed underneath, all of a
- 26:10sudden we can see with a greater
- 26:11clarity.
- 26:12>> Mhm.
- 26:13>> And that's I see it's a it's an
- 26:14opportunity to clean what's underneath,
- 26:16not just physically. Like and I've had
- 26:18I've had friends tell me like they get
- 26:19injured and all of a sudden the the
- 26:21doctors are are looking in in in your
- 26:23body now and then then they find other
- 26:24stuff. They find that, "Oh, there's a
- 26:25tumor here."
- 26:27You know what I mean? Like how many
- 26:28times has that happened? Someone gets
- 26:29injured and it's actually an act of
- 26:31grace because guess what? There's that
- 26:33exposure now leads to them going, "Oh my
- 26:35gosh, there's other stuff that needs to
- 26:36get taken taken care." But that's just
- 26:38not physical, that's also emotional.
- 26:40It's that when we when we have these
- 26:42things happen in our lives,
- 26:45often it's an opportunity to own
- 26:48the crap that we've done
- 26:50that that we haven't dealt with.
- 26:52>> Mhm.
- 26:52>> That has been hidden by a cover that
- 26:56that may have actually
- 26:57grown over the the thing that the
- 26:59bitterness and the anger or whatever the
- 27:01sin or whatever it was, right?
- 27:02>> Mhm.
- 27:03>> So, which leads me to V, which is
- 27:06vulnerability.
- 27:07And that is a Oh, at the well of
- 27:11vulnerability is joy. If you want true
- 27:13genuine joy, you can't be full truly
- 27:15genuinely joyful without being truly
- 27:18vulnerable
- 27:20with those around you. And vulnerability
- 27:22also, when it comes to healing,
- 27:26it's
- 27:27trusting people in your life
- 27:30to help you heal.
- 27:31Like
- 27:33I think of Beaver Fleming.
- 27:35And he needed to be so vulnerable with
- 27:38me when he twisted his knee, bro. I
- 27:40don't know if you saw on his Instagram,
- 27:42but we were in Arizona.
- 27:44And he went out for this kickflip and
- 27:46landed back on his board and his board,
- 27:48bro,
- 27:49landed
- 27:50He broke his ACL, MCL, PCL, and meniscus
- 27:53all in one go. His knee's bent to the
- 27:56right 90°.
- 27:58He can't get up. There's 200 people
- 28:00watching the demo. I run over there.
- 28:03Beaver's shouting. I'm all, "What do you
- 28:05want me to do?" And he says, I said I
- 28:07said, "Do you want me to put it back
- 28:08in?"
- 28:10And he just said, "Do what you got to
- 28:11do."
- 28:12And in that moment
- 28:14he was incredibly vulnerable. I mean,
- 28:16he's he's in front of all this crowd and
- 28:18I
- 28:19I pulled on that leg and I and I put
- 28:21that thing back in. It went like shlup
- 28:23shlup. It made these two little clicking
- 28:25that noises.
- 28:27But he told me that when he went to go
- 28:29see the surgeon,
- 28:30normally what happens is and you could
- 28:32you could attest to this being working
- 28:33in a an ambulance,
- 28:35if you find somebody and they he's
- 28:37they've got a knee all bent out of
- 28:39shape, they're not going to try and put
- 28:41it back in there on the spot. They're
- 28:42going to cast you as you are and they're
- 28:44going to get you to the hospital as soon
- 28:45as possible. Probably do it as soon as
- 28:47you can.
- 28:48But what Bieber told me is that because
- 28:51he was able to get his knee back in
- 28:53right away,
- 28:55that helped with the healing because it
- 28:57was at least positioned and back in the
- 28:59same spot.
- 29:01But he needed to he needed to have a a
- 29:04vulnerability where he's Okay.
- 29:07I trust him.
- 29:10And uh I talked about how
- 29:12human journey of recovery that's very
- 29:14important.
- 29:16You can be vulnerable with.
- 29:18>> Yeah.
- 29:19>> That
- 29:20we are we we have the willingness to
- 29:22say, "Okay, what do you see in me that I
- 29:25don't necessarily see in myself, you
- 29:26know?"
- 29:28Uh what do you see wound? Literally,
- 29:30what do you see in the wound that
- 29:32that you can help clean that I can't
- 29:35help clean myself,
- 29:36you know?
- 29:38So having people in our lives that we
- 29:39trust enough to be vulnerable with,
- 29:42um
- 29:43well, helps with our recovery.
- 29:45>> For sure.
- 29:46Yeah.
- 29:47>> And you felt
- 29:48um this journey uh
- 29:51giving you the ability to be vulnerable
- 29:53with other people?
- 29:54>> Yes, and um a lot of the times, man,
- 29:57they uh they beat me to it before I even
- 29:59ask, you know? Um
- 30:01so my roommate he's a solid Christian.
- 30:03Um
- 30:04when he visited me in the hospital,
- 30:06you know, he even pointed out he he knew
- 30:08exactly, you know, uh
- 30:10what I was thinking is, you know, the
- 30:12whole
- 30:13cuz I take idolatry very seriously. Um
- 30:15the whole making skateboarding an idol.
- 30:17He's like, "Think about it. Like you got
- 30:18hurt from your legs down, not your neck
- 30:20down." You know? And
- 30:23I was like, "Dude, yeah, 100%." And so
- 30:26because this is this is like a a
- 30:28spiritual thing, not like a like a I
- 30:30guess a physical thing, like putting
- 30:31your knee back in place, I just remember
- 30:33telling God I had like a serious moment
- 30:36for like an hour where I I wheeled
- 30:37myself out in the wheelchair to this
- 30:39lake behind in hospital.
- 30:41And I just prayed to him and I told God
- 30:43and I still stand by this like
- 30:45do we do we you need to do in the sense
- 30:47of like
- 30:48>> Come on.
- 30:48>> If I if I heal up and I'm able to walk,
- 30:51but I can never jump again or run again
- 30:53or skate again, I'm seriously completely
- 30:57okay with that. You know, I've told God
- 30:59that and I still tell God that and I
- 31:01have a lot of peace in saying that. Um
- 31:04because you know
- 31:07for me when I was striving to be a super
- 31:08good skateboarder, it's like it's cool,
- 31:11but at the same time it's like I didn't
- 31:13have as much peace
- 31:15and until now I'm just like possibly
- 31:17letting that go, you know. I'll be happy
- 31:18just filming skateboarding rest of my
- 31:20life, you know. Um but that is the one
- 31:23thing that was the that was the big uh
- 31:26do we you need to do moment. Um and you
- 31:28know, I'm still healing, so I don't know
- 31:29what that's going to look like, but
- 31:31regardless, I'm seriously
- 31:33okay with whatever happens, you know.
- 31:35>> Yeah.
- 31:36>> So.
- 31:36>> That's so brave.
- 31:38And I see that in your life, man, and
- 31:40and uh I see how open that is
- 31:42that even you for doing this
- 31:43conversation, you know, I see that in in
- 31:46in your life, man.
- 31:47The the last
- 31:49uh couple letters are are where things
- 31:51get a little bit more exciting. And
- 31:53you're going to get to this moment and
- 31:54you're going to wake up one day
- 31:56and you're going to have enough strength
- 31:57in your legs to pop an ollie.
- 32:00>> Yeah.
- 32:02>> Enough articulation and your your your
- 32:05nervous system is going to be aware
- 32:06enough to flick a kickflip, you know?
- 32:09>> Yeah.
- 32:09>> And that's where the E of empowerment
- 32:11comes in, you know, where all of a
- 32:13sudden
- 32:15you're no longer in the place of of of
- 32:18being hurt, but now you can you're
- 32:20empowered.
- 32:22And Raven come, bro, you're going to
- 32:23you're going to experience that
- 32:26sometime soon.
- 32:28>> Yeah.
- 32:28>> And what we do with our empowerment is
- 32:30really important.
- 32:33Because what we can do is and that and
- 32:35that's when the R the last letter in
- 32:37recover, of course, is R,
- 32:39is when we get the opportunity to
- 32:40return.
- 32:42And that that returning looks a little
- 32:44different for everybody. Sometimes it's
- 32:45returning to the person who hurt you.
- 32:47Now, that's not your case. You can't you
- 32:49you know that wave is is is come and
- 32:51gone.
- 32:52Um
- 32:54but sometimes returning looks like going
- 32:57to the younger generation that follows
- 32:59you and to teach and teaching them the
- 33:01lessons that you learned.
- 33:03>> Mhm.
- 33:04>> Um sometimes sometimes returning is
- 33:06going back to the place of trauma
- 33:09and uh and and and coming back and
- 33:12showing that place that that that that
- 33:14environment
- 33:16that you're not only back, but you're
- 33:18back stronger. You're empowered.
- 33:20Cuz
- 33:21physically the body, guess what?
- 33:23The plane crash where I where the my
- 33:26eyebrow right here
- 33:27is actually here and stronger.
- 33:30>> Mhm.
- 33:30>> My leg my my femur is guess what? It's
- 33:33stronger. It's actually more empowered
- 33:34because it's it's gone through it.
- 33:37And that's the crazy thing is that
- 33:41through the difficulty and journey, if
- 33:43we're faithful with the process,
- 33:45well, guess what? Many of us we come
- 33:48back stronger.
- 33:50Many of us come back empowered.
- 33:53And um
- 33:55I know that you're not quite there yet,
- 33:56but when you come through through out of
- 33:59this,
- 34:01um what are you going to
- 34:03um
- 34:04do with your your healing and and and
- 34:07when you think about return,
- 34:09what does return look like for Raven?
- 34:11Who who who who do you need to return
- 34:13to?
- 34:15>> Um
- 34:16returning
- 34:17uh
- 34:18definitely returning uh to a better
- 34:20Christian community.
- 34:22Um I feel like I was definitely hanging
- 34:25around uh people who
- 34:28you know, I guess claimed to be
- 34:29Christians, but I wasn't seeing maybe
- 34:31much fruit in their life. Um and you
- 34:34know, there's a balance there of like
- 34:35ministering to those people and then
- 34:36hanging out with them. And so I remember
- 34:39like making like
- 34:40just a list of those things of play like
- 34:43maybe places or people I won't go back
- 34:45and hang out with.
- 34:47Or not as much.
- 34:49Definitely if I do return to
- 34:50skateboarding, returning back to it with
- 34:52a different mindset, not a
- 34:54self-glorifying mindset. Um
- 34:57cuz when I would make uh different skate
- 34:59videos like apart from skate ministry
- 35:01just for like other people, I was
- 35:03becoming to be like very like kind of
- 35:05known in the local area like and um you
- 35:08know, telling myself like if I keep
- 35:10doing that aside from skate ministry,
- 35:12like I won't even put my name on the
- 35:13video, stuff like that. Um
- 35:16but uh the empowering part of it is that
- 35:20the doctors at the ICU said that there
- 35:22was probably only a 30% chance I'd walk
- 35:25again.
- 35:26And so uh they said like if you did walk
- 35:29again, it would probably you'd probably
- 35:30be able to stand up maybe after 3
- 35:32months. And after 3 weeks, I stood up on
- 35:34my own.
- 35:35And that was
- 35:36>> on.
- 35:37>> And I just remember thinking like cuz
- 35:38you know, the human part of me was still
- 35:39feeling kind of defeated like man, like
- 35:42will I ever heal or whatever, like you
- 35:44know, is this too great to you know,
- 35:47overcome? And I just remember God when
- 35:49he healed the lame man, he said that you
- 35:51know, he looked at the faith of his
- 35:53friends.
- 35:54You know, and that was pleasing to him.
- 35:56And I'm so thankful for everyone that
- 35:58prayed for me because you know, on my
- 36:00behalf, they lifted me up and that was
- 36:03super empowering to see that God was
- 36:04being faithful to their prayers, you
- 36:06know, even if I didn't have a lot of
- 36:07hope.
- 36:08>> Yeah.
- 36:09>> So
- 36:10Yeah.
- 36:10>> That's so good, man. And so those are
- 36:13the seven steps of recover that I've
- 36:14written in the book. The last one I talk
- 36:16about the eighth step and it's optional.
- 36:19Recovery
- 36:20recovery ends with the with the letter
- 36:22Y.
- 36:23And when we get injured like this,
- 36:26um it's not always helpful to in the
- 36:28beginning of the process to begin asking
- 36:30this.
- 36:31>> Yeah.
- 36:32>> But it's the question why, right? Now,
- 36:34once once we're at that that stage of
- 36:37return,
- 36:38it's actually really important to ask
- 36:40the question
- 36:41why.
- 36:42And I talk about how the letter Y, if
- 36:44you look at the shape of the letter,
- 36:46it's kind of like two dots that are
- 36:48joining into one
- 36:49and then journeying together.
- 36:52And I think a lot of times God uses
- 36:55suffering
- 36:56to bring us closer to him
- 36:59>> Yeah.
- 36:59>> so that we can journey together, right?
- 37:01Together with God. And um,
- 37:04what I want to believe for is that for
- 37:06me, like the plane crash, we all go, you
- 37:08know, people, you know, I'll tell you
- 37:10this is that
- 37:11the weeks after the plane crash, asking
- 37:13the question why was not helpful. Uh, it
- 37:16led to survivor guilt. It I didn't have
- 37:19the answer.
- 37:20Now,
- 37:2118 years later,
- 37:23um, I don't have necessarily an answer
- 37:26for why it happened. Like I don't have a
- 37:28I don't have a sentence, but here's what
- 37:29I do have
- 37:30is I have moments, peoples, and places
- 37:34that that answer that question. In the
- 37:35sense that there are people who I can
- 37:36point to who I can say that's my right
- 37:38there because they either became a
- 37:41Christian because of my story or journey
- 37:42or they
- 37:43my my suffering helped them in some way.
- 37:46Um,
- 37:48so the why is a really important
- 37:50question to ask and to embrace at the
- 37:52right time.
- 37:54And what I'm believing for is that
- 37:56there's a really big why, Raven. Oh my
- 37:59goodness, there's a massive why.
- 38:02And you may not know until you get to
- 38:04heaven, but here's what I do know is
- 38:06that there is a why.
- 38:08And the why is
- 38:11um,
- 38:11you Oh, I'm getting a phone call.
- 38:15How are you good? Yeah, I think I think
- 38:17the why is is impact, man. I think this
- 38:19is this story and journey is going to
- 38:20impact a lot of people.
- 38:22And it gives you a level of compassion
- 38:26for people who have undergone physical
- 38:29injury
- 38:31you didn't have before. Now you have a
- 38:33compassionate heart in a way that you
- 38:35didn't have before, you know?
- 38:37And so
- 38:38any any last final thoughts when it
- 38:40comes to to why and I'm not asking I'm
- 38:43not you know, you've already kind of
- 38:45already talked a little bit about it.
- 38:46You felt like God was slowing you down
- 38:48to to embrace you know that to cut off
- 38:52the idolism of skateboarding.
- 38:54>> Mhm.
- 38:56>> But yeah, any thoughts on on just that
- 38:59last part and
- 39:01>> Oh, yeah.
- 39:02>> I want to pray for you, man.
- 39:03>> The first thing I noticed was um
- 39:06uh
- 39:08you know, when I look at like how God
- 39:09can be using this outside of like my
- 39:11personal spiritual life is I was getting
- 39:14a lot of texts and DMs
- 39:17consistently from the same people. Not
- 39:20just one time.
- 39:21And they were people I knew from before
- 39:23that I never and they expressed to me
- 39:25that they hate God. And they hate what I
- 39:27believe. And they were telling me, you
- 39:30know, every other day that they were
- 39:31praying for me.
- 39:33And, you know, if they really were, that
- 39:36is awesome. And this injury would be
- 39:38worth it if that's the case because, you
- 39:40know, um
- 39:42when reality hits you in the face but
- 39:44then also hits in the face of other
- 39:45people, you know, they they will
- 39:47definitely look up just the way you are.
- 39:49And that is something I noticed that I'm
- 39:52thankful for. Um
- 39:53that there are people and I'm telling
- 39:55you it's like it blows my mind because
- 39:56only I know, but I never thought that
- 39:59and that's wrong of me to think too
- 40:00also, but you know, that they would pray
- 40:04or, you know, look to God in any way and
- 40:06the fact that they did and told me and
- 40:08they were consistently doing it every
- 40:09other day telling me that was awesome.
- 40:12And I've had other moments like that too
- 40:14and in my head I'm like if that's the
- 40:15case, this is worth it. Yeah. This is
- 40:17definitely worth it. Um
- 40:20And so, yeah, and then I'm sure there's
- 40:21other things too that I won't know until
- 40:23I get to heaven.
- 40:25Um and also, maybe, you know, this
- 40:27injury happened so that another injury
- 40:29would would not have happened, you know,
- 40:32>> Yeah.
- 40:32>> uh later on.
- 40:34>> But you one day I believe that you'll
- 40:35find out.
- 40:36>> Yeah, for sure, you know. Um cuz I
- 40:40>> to offer you is I'd love to help you as
- 40:42you emerge back and as you start to be
- 40:44empowered in return.
- 40:46If you are looking to launch this story
- 40:50and journey into motivational being and
- 40:52speaking, being brought into
- 40:53environments like schools and and and
- 40:55community centers and
- 40:57and speak cuz this story, man, you're
- 40:59going to, you know, got the end of it,
- 41:00you're going to have a story. You're
- 41:01going to have a journey.
- 41:03And uh to use that to empower people who
- 41:06are in their earlier pros- journey of of
- 41:09recovery.
- 41:10It's a really powerful thing.
- 41:12>> That'd be cool, yeah.
- 41:14Yes, for sure.
- 41:15>> Yeah, man.
- 41:16>> Yes, sir.
- 41:17>> Wow.
- 41:18Well, hey, man, let me say a word of
- 41:19prayer for for you. I'm looking forward
- 41:21to hearing uh in the months to come how
- 41:23God's going to use this.
- 41:25And um I'm really thankful that we got
- 41:27to have this conversation, bro.
- 41:29>> Yes, sir. I appreciate you, man. Thank
- 41:30you.
- 41:31>> Cool, let's pray. Lord, I just thank you
- 41:33so much for my friend Raven.
- 41:35Lord, I thank you for uh your
- 41:36faithfulness in his life. Lord, thank
- 41:37you for his humility.
- 41:39Thank you for his hunger.
- 41:41Lord, thank you that he is hustling in
- 41:43the PT, physical therapy, Father God.
- 41:46Uh Lord, I pray right now that your
- 41:47spirit would just be ministering to him,
- 41:50speaking to him, giving him wisdom,
- 41:52vision going forward, Father God. And I
- 41:54do pray in your timing, in your way, for
- 41:56your glory, and his abundant, great joy,
- 42:00Lord, that you would use this for your
- 42:02kingdom, where the enemy would not have
- 42:04the last laugh, that what he meant for
- 42:06evil will turn for great good for your
- 42:08kingdom, for Raven, for his future,
- 42:12Lord, for his impact. And so we pray all
- 42:14these things in the mighty name of
- 42:15Jesus. Amen.
- 42:18>> Thank you, Dave. Appreciate you, man.
