  4. 0:07Angeles Westchester County New York Bob
  5. 0:11dur has been accused of many crimes over
  6. 0:13many years and that's what makes him in
  7. 0:16some ways the most unusual of all
  8. 0:18suspects this isn't a one-time event
  9. 0:21that people are associating with they're
  10. 0:23saying this is a guy for whom murder is
  11. 0:27an option
  12. 0:33before we made the Jinx there was a
  13. 0:36whole other film which was called all
  14. 0:38good things and that was a narrative
  15. 0:39feature film that my partner and I had
  16. 0:42started writing a number of years before
  17. 0:44because we were interested in Bob dur
  18. 0:46story we were working to try to get an
  19. 0:49accurate representation of what happened
  20. 0:51we weren't just saying well let's make a
  21. 0:52fictional Hollywood movie let's make it
  22. 0:54up as we went along and I think that was
  23. 0:56important because when Bob Durst saw
  24. 0:58that movie it motivated him to reach out
  25. 1:02to
  26. 1:03me Mr Ji how are you good how are you we
  27. 1:06arranged to have breakfast first I found
  28. 1:09him very engaging I would say Charming
  29. 1:12he's very funny yet you cannot be
  30. 1:16unaffected by the feeling of shaking
  31. 1:19Bob's hand and recognizing while that's
  32. 1:22happening that this is a hand that he
  33. 1:24used to dismember a person I did not
  34. 1:27kill my best friend I did dismember
  35. 1:31him for many many years he has been the
  36. 1:35subject of tabloid journalism the guy
  37. 1:38whose wife disappeared the guy whose
  38. 1:40best friend was murdered the guy whose
  39. 1:42neighbor in Galis was dismembered I'm
  40. 1:44always interested in the story behind
  41. 1:46the story trying to understand someone
  42. 1:48like that uh people that other people
  43. 1:50call Maniacs or serial killers I think
  44. 1:53they start out as people and they have a
  45. 1:56history and family and hopes and dreams
  46. 1:59how does some
  47. 2:00begin as a young boy with every
  48. 2:04advantage and end up in a $300 a month
  49. 2:07rooming house disguised as a mute
  50. 2:10woman with his neighbor shot in the face
  51. 2:14lying on the floor in his apartment
  52. 2:17that's such an incredible transition
  53. 2:19that's such a radical departure from
  54. 2:21where he started that there was no way
  55. 2:23to not want to take a deeper
  56. 2:27look this whole time I've said nothing
  57. 2:29nothing to nobody about
  58. 2:33anything when I first asked him what he
  59. 2:35hoped to get out of sitting down with me
  60. 2:38he said I would like to have something
  61. 2:40out there from me and there was no
  62. 2:43moment when we were asked to tell a
  63. 2:46certain kind of story Bob's got plenty
  64. 2:48of money if he wanted to pay for a
  65. 2:49documentary he could have done it he
  66. 2:51said to me upfront there is no question
  67. 2:54that you can ask me that I won't answer
  68. 2:56there is no time when you're going to
  69. 2:57say to me I want to ask you about this
  70. 2:59and I'm I'm going to say don't go there
  71. 3:02often when you're making a film you're
  72. 3:03under a lot of time pressure to make it
  73. 3:05happen quickly the Jinx was very
  74. 3:07different because we were able to work
  75. 3:09on this in in one way or another for
  76. 3:11about eight years we knew that we were
  77. 3:12going to have to spend a lot of time
  78. 3:14trying to understand what had really
  79. 3:15happened there were so many twists and
  80. 3:17turns in this story there were so many
  81. 3:20Alleyways you'd need to go down and so
  82. 3:22we did the forensic work to get that
  83. 3:24material now what the audience can see
  84. 3:27in the series is the result of all those
  85. 3:29years and what we tried to do is to give
  86. 3:31the audience that experience that we had
  87. 3:34to go back and look at these very
  88. 3:36Complex events that took place over so
  89. 3:38long and bring the audience with us and
  90. 3:41give them a feeling of what that was
  91. 3:42like for us to make these
  92. 3:44discoveries it's such a deep dive into
  93. 3:46his life when you keep looking there are
  94. 3:49more layers and more layers and more
  95. 3:51layers
  96. 3:55[Music]
