- 0:00our tour concludes with one of the most
- 0:02famous houses of Horrors in the City of
- 0:04Angels better known as The Murder House
- 0:09moments in pop culture can erupt
- 0:11seemingly out of nowhere in the case of
- 0:13American Horror Story the seasons that
- 0:15followed its Penthouse debut are more
- 0:18scattershot and hard to pin down than
- 0:20the genuine Marvel that was murderous
- 0:22but what made that first season so
- 0:24powerful and why did it prove so hard to
- 0:27top Legend has it that the ghost of Nora
- 0:30Montgomery still haunts these very Halls
- 0:34before we get too far make sure you're
- 0:35subscribed in order to stay up toate on
- 0:37all our latest videos premiering on the
- 0:39FX Network in 2011 American Horror Story
- 0:42was developed by Ryan Murphy and Brad
- 0:44falchuk after creating the light-hearted
- 0:46feel-good series Glee the two wanted to
- 0:49delve into something darker and more
- 0:50challenging so they leaned into their
- 0:52love of the horror genre and pitched FX
- 0:55on an anthology show that would tell new
- 0:57stories every season each would be
- 0:59self-contained and often feature
- 1:01reoccurring actors in clearly different
- 1:03roles for the first season Murphy and
- 1:05falchuk would go full American Gothic
- 1:07with their haunted house Story murder
- 1:09house oh God they didn't die in here or
- 1:12anything did they Yes actually both of
- 1:14them murder suicide I sold them the
- 1:17house too the series came out of the
- 1:19gate with a murderer row of a cast with
- 1:21the likes of Connie Brittain Dennis
- 1:23O'Hare and in her regular series acting
- 1:25debut on television Jessica Lang I don't
- 1:27remember your name right no I I never
- 1:31got a chance to tell you my name my name
- 1:33is Vivian Harmon anyway the talent on
- 1:35hand was remarkable with each performer
- 1:37seemingly perfectly dialed in for the
- 1:39type of story Murphy and foucha clearly
- 1:41wanted to tell a horrific and terrifying
- 1:43look at the Modern American Family
- 1:45through an almost Stephen King Lind one
- 1:47where the living are to be feared as
- 1:49much as whatever is going bump in the
- 1:51night Murder House centered around the
- 1:53Harmon family having recently moved into
- 1:55a Los Angeles Mansion they quickly
- 1:57learned their new home is haunted in a
- 1:58story that works as a masterclass in
- 2:00psychological and full Gonzo eroticism
- 2:03which also manifested in one of murder
- 2:05House's most memorable villains the
- 2:07rubber man a harbinger of horror and
- 2:09heartache a lost Spirit cursed to haunt
- 2:11this Mansion for years to come get this
- 2:13suit if it doesn't work out you could
- 2:16always wear for Halloween I do love
- 2:17Halloween and it is right around the
- 2:19corner after the resounding success of
- 2:21Murder House Murphy and falchuk would
- 2:23introduce us to Asylum for the Anthology
- 2:25Following Season while season 1 was set
- 2:27in a modern era Asylum was set in in
- 2:29the' 60s at briercliff Manor a hospital
- 2:32for the mentally unwell this season
- 2:34cranks up the pulp of Pulp horror with
- 2:36fascists demonic possessions and alien
- 2:38abductions Jessica Lang stood out more
- 2:40than ever as Sister Jude a character
- 2:43grappling with her past sins Asylum
- 2:45explores themes of sanity and the human
- 2:47capacity for evil leaving viewers
- 2:49questioning what's real and what's a
- 2:51nightmare for the most part this
- 2:53sophomore story followed the series
- 2:54Mantra of familiar setups that took wild
- 2:57turns if anything the season would be
- 2:59assigned post that the creators were
- 3:01maybe a bit too fond of wild turns you
- 3:04may think my mind is closed doctor but
- 3:07my eyes are wide open I promise you in
- 3:09season 3 we're introduced to a coven
- 3:12said in New Orleans this was the first
- 3:14season to go truly camp and high
- 3:16melodrama The Witches Academy the
- 3:18resurrection spells and the power
- 3:20struggles made for great entertainment
- 3:22but at the cost of genuine horror murder
- 3:24house and even Asylum still waited in
- 3:26the tropes of horror more
- 3:27literature-based for season 1 and
- 3:29defitely on the pulp side for season 2
- 3:31The scares were replaced by spectacle
- 3:33The Atmosphere by Aesthetics the
- 3:35characters though memorable often felt
- 3:37like caricatures their development
- 3:39sacrificed on the altar of shock value
- 3:41and sensationalism it was a fun romp but
- 3:43the haunting essence of the show seemed
- 3:45to be slipping through the Creator's
- 3:46fingers am on merard
- 3:49Lincoln I'll buy you a drink the fourth
- 3:52season freak Show centered around a
- 3:54carnival of oddities in the ' 50s
- 3:56visually stunning and emotionally
- 3:57charged it felt like a return to form a
- 4:00focus on outcasts and misfits but the
- 4:02narrative meandered characters came and
- 4:04went with little consequence and the
- 4:06scares were more grotesk than terrifying
- 4:09Twisty the Clown was a standout a figure
- 4:11of genuine Menace but he was lost in a
- 4:13sea of half-baked subplots and
- 4:15inconsistent tone they want to call us
- 4:17monsters fine we'll act like Monsters by
- 4:20the time we reach Hotel the fifth season
- 4:22the show had fully embraced its descent
- 4:24into style over substance the hotel
- 4:26Cortez with its Art Deco decadence and
- 4:28Sinister secrets was gorgeous to look at
- 4:31and really did feel lived in and Lady
- 4:33Gaga's Countess was a mesmerizing
- 4:34presence however Murphy and foucha
- 4:36continued to let their various subplots
- 4:38run rampant with no real thread to bind
- 4:40it together the show instead feels like
- 4:42the Creator's trying to prove how big
- 4:45they can go you want some I'd rather
- 4:48want Rowan Oak the sixth season
- 4:50attempted to reinvent the wheel with a
- 4:52metan narrative structure that fli the
- 4:54script halfway through initially
- 4:55presented as a true crime documentary it
- 4:57later transitioned into a real quity
- 5:00show format the ambitious approach while
- 5:02commendable for its creativity
- 5:03ultimately fell flat the constant shifts
- 5:06in perspective and tone left viewers
- 5:07disoriented and it continued the series
- 5:09trend of no longer trying to feel
- 5:11terrifying but to make the audience
- 5:13relate in any way is is some part of the
- 5:17show is anything even real season 7 Colt
- 5:21brought the horrors of contemporary
- 5:22politics to the Forefront while it was a
- 5:24timely commentary on societal fears it
- 5:27lacked the supernatural elements that
- 5:28had defined American Horror Story the
- 5:30scares were replaced by political
- 5:32allegory and the season often felt more
- 5:34like a satirical drama than a horror
- 5:36show it also continued to really not
- 5:38give us as an audience anyone to cheer
- 5:40for every character in the series seemed
- 5:42to grow increasingly cold and distant I
- 5:45said there is nothing more dangerous in
- 5:47this world than a humiliated man
- 5:49apocalypse the 8th season attempted to
- 5:51merge past Seasons into a grand
- 5:53narrative bringing back beloved
- 5:55characters and intertwining their
- 5:56stories fan favorite seasons 1 and three
- 5:59were combined into a season with the
- 6:00highest Stakes American Horror Story had
- 6:02attempted before some however felt this
- 6:05Nostalgia driven approach felt more like
- 6:07fan service than a return to form but
- 6:09for others it really did remind us of
- 6:11why we love the show Mostly because For
- 6:13the First Time in years there were
- 6:14characters we cared about we're the new
- 6:16owners who are you I'm Constance
- 6:19Langdon and
- 6:21this is mying house the ninth season
- 6:261984 embraced the slasher film aesthetic
- 6:28of the 1980s it was a love letter to the
- 6:31genre complete with campy kills and
- 6:33over-the-top characters while it was a
- 6:35fun homage it lacked the depth and
- 6:37originality that had once set American
- 6:39Horror Story apart because American
- 6:41Horror Story had led audiences to
- 6:42believe that it was a show about more
- 6:45than homages it again fell into the Trap
- 6:48of a fun celebration with nothing to say
- 6:50you were right right about what that guy
- 6:54the night soccer Brook said she saw him
- 6:56down by the dock when we get to season
- 6:5810's double feature we actually get two
- 7:00shortened Seasons the first red tide was
- 7:03a lovecraftian horror about a struggling
- 7:05writer who moves to a Seaside Town only
- 7:07to discover a dark secret about his
- 7:09success it is not irrational to worry
- 7:12about our daughter out there alone when
- 7:14we both have been attacked in the last
- 7:16few days the second Death Valley was a
- 7:19black and white historical drama
- 7:20blending science fiction and Alien
- 7:23Invasion story while each part gave
- 7:24different viewers something to latch on
- 7:26to they felt too short for the cluttered
- 7:28amount of ambition the reason my species
- 7:30traveled billions of miles to live here
- 7:33is because our planet looks an awful lot
- 7:35like this in NYC season 11 brought one
- 7:37of the series more somber tones to the
- 7:39Forefront set in the gritty 80s of New
- 7:41York City the story focused on a
- 7:43burgeoning art scene and the rising AIDS
- 7:45epidemic the season intertwined personal
- 7:47stories of struggle and survival with
- 7:49Supernatural elements offering a raw
- 7:52emotional and haunting portrayal of a
- 7:54pivotal era in history some audiences
- 7:56found it too exploitative of a real and
- 7:58very horrific time that was not that
- 8:00long ago while horror has often walked
- 8:02this line some wondered if it was
- 8:04handled delicately enough and others
- 8:06lauded the show for pushing the envelope
- 8:08I'm writing about how gay men are being
- 8:10hunted and killed in this town wasn't us
- 8:12the 12th and most recent season delicate
- 8:14followed a woman who believes a Sinister
- 8:16force is sabotaging her pregnancy this
- 8:19season delves into themes of paranoia
- 8:21control and the societal pressure
- 8:23surrounding women's bodies delivering a
- 8:25deeply unsettling and thought-provoking
- 8:27narrative while incredibly atmospheric
- 8:29and deeply unnerving exploration of
- 8:31motherhood the pacing once again felt
- 8:33off with more importance put on shock
- 8:35and awe you reneged on our agreement
- 8:38what no I didn't you promised us a
- 8:41baby and then you tried to take him back
- 8:43don't Gaslight a gaslighter babe every
- 8:46season of American Horror Story has
- 8:47brought a very specific purpose whether
- 8:50haunted houses or political Cults the
- 8:52problems often stem from over ambition
- 8:55and pacing what made murder house stand
- 8:57out was its simple statement of living
- 8:59are are as bad as the dead that we are
- 9:01all haunted and haunting all at once
- 9:03it's merely a matter of how that impacts
