  6. 0:19lights turned off Hayward knows his
  7. 0:22neighborhood and realizes this car is
  8. 0:24most likely not from here the officer
  9. 0:27goes on and checks the Volkswagen Beetle
  10. 0:30Parks right in front of his neighbor's
  11. 0:31house the owners are not home only their
  12. 0:3417 and 19-year-old daughters
  13. 0:37alone he turns on his brights to read
  14. 0:39the license plate this startles the
  15. 0:41driver and he speeds away Hayward chases
  16. 0:44him the driver blows past one and then
  17. 0:47another stop sign award has no intention
  18. 0:50of letting the man escape a few minutes
  19. 0:52later the beetle finally stops at an
  20. 0:54abandoned gas
  21. 0:56station a man gets out of his vehicle
  22. 0:59with his hands up
  23. 1:00he wears blue jeans a black turtleneck
  24. 1:03and Tennis Shoes he has shoulder long
  25. 1:05dark hair and smells of weed Hayward
  26. 1:08points his gun at him the man says he's
  27. 1:10a lost student who was at the local
  28. 1:11Drive-In watching Towering Inferno he
  29. 1:14got lost on his way home the only
  30. 1:16problem is that Hayward drove by the
  31. 1:18theater earlier Towering Inferno was not
  32. 1:21being shown that night the officer
  33. 1:24checks the man's car and sees something
  34. 1:26very strange the passenger seat is
  35. 1:29missing
  36. 1:30in its place is an open bag with
  37. 1:32multiple very strange items a ski mask a
  38. 1:36crowbar an ice pick a box of trash bags
  39. 1:40gloves a panty hose rope and some wire
  40. 1:43in the trunk heward also discovers a
  41. 1:46pair of handcuffs I'm going to arrest
  42. 1:48you tonight for evading an officer
  43. 1:50Mister but I intend to ask the county

  45. 1:55possession of burglary tools back at the
  46. 1:57police station the man gets registered
  47. 1:59and photographed while he had the
  48. 2:01necessary tools there was no burglary to
  49. 2:04directly link them to but without any
  50. 2:06evidence he is free to leave the station
  51. 2:08on bail Bob Hayward is suspicious he's
  52. 2:12convinced that the man wanted to break
  53. 2:13into his neighbor's house with those two
  54. 2:15girls
  55. 2:17inside though it was only much later
  56. 2:20that Hayward would realize the man he
  57. 2:22arrested that night was none other than
  58. 2:24America's most infamous killer Ted
  59. 2:28Bundy and it will take a lot more to
  60. 2:31finally catch him he's not a wild beast
  61. 2:33to look at or to hear her viciously
  62. 2:35fting her he was thoughtful charismatic
  63. 2:37clubbing her to death he was quite

  72. 3:30them stands out Ted Bundy he's handsome
  73. 3:34articulate likable even well I'm sure it
  74. 3:38works and you've got to have faith it'll
  75. 3:39work or else you'd be be reduced to some
  76. 3:42kind of uh you know mumbling idiot
  77. 3:44Theodore Robert Bundy was born on
  78. 3:46November 24th
  79. 3:481946 he's a smart boy and grows up in a
  80. 3:51relatively normal workingclass family I
  81. 3:54grew up in a wonderful home with two
  82. 3:57dedicated and loving parents one of
  83. 4:00five brothers and
  84. 4:02sisters a home where we as our as
  85. 4:05children were the focus of of my
  86. 4:07parents' lives where we regularly
  87. 4:09attended church two Christian parents
  88. 4:12who did not drink they did not smoke
  89. 4:13there was no gambling there was no
  90. 4:16physical abuse or fighting in the home
  91. 4:17but it was a fine solid Christian home
  92. 4:21but not everything is all right with Ted
  93. 4:23from his early of an age is 3 years old
  94. 4:25he does strange things when his aunt is
  95. 4:28sleeping he arranges kitchen knives
  96. 4:30around her when outside playing in the
  97. 4:31forest he frequently takes apart mice
  98. 4:34when swimming he more than once tries to
  99. 4:36drown others he never shows any signs of
  100. 4:42guilt for a few years he and his mother
  101. 4:44lived together with his grandparents his
  102. 4:47family is religious his grandfather a
  103. 4:49deacon but the grandfather is also
  104. 4:52abusive and violent a racist wife beater
  105. 4:54and collector of violent horn despite
  106. 4:57all this Bundy adores him and regularly
  107. 5:00Peaks into his collection Ted is
  108. 5:03intelligent and good-looking but he is
  109. 5:05also very shy a loner who is often
  110. 5:08bullied at school he sometimes has
  111. 5:10serious outbursts of rage and does not
  112. 5:12quite fit in with the other kids his age
  113. 5:15during his first years at College Ted is
  114. 5:18insecure and has almost no social life a
  115. 5:21positive memory for him is when he buys
  116. 5:23in 1968 tan
  117. 5:26Volkswagen gives him a sense of freedom
  118. 5:28and Independence
  119. 5:33over time Ted Bundy builds the perfect
  120. 5:38mask he appears as a confident and
  121. 5:41Charming young man now graduates in
  122. 5:43Psychology starts dating girls and
  123. 5:45attends law school but he doesn't care
  124. 5:48much about the law himself as a teenager
  125. 5:51Bundy had a lengthy history of theft
  126. 5:53when he turned 18 it was wiped but the
  127. 5:56desire to commit a crime grows and grows
  128. 5:59inside him on February 1st 1974 Bundy
  129. 6:04breaks into a student's home abducts and
  130. 6:07kills his very first victim Linda and
  131. 6:10[Music]
  132. 6:13Healey Bundy's victims are always
  133. 6:15attractive young women he approaches
  134. 6:17them in public places faking an injury
  135. 6:20or disability and luring them to his car
  136. 6:22when his charm and good looks convinces
  137. 6:24the women that he's no threat he beats
  138. 6:26them unconscious for the bodies he has a
  139. 6:28place on the floor of his 10an
  140. 6:30Volkswagen right where the passenger
  141. 6:31seat used to be he drives to a secluded
  142. 6:34location where he brutally rapes
  143. 6:36strangles and kills them often not even
  144. 6:38stopping
  145. 6:39there every month more and more women
  146. 6:42disappear first in Washington then in
  147. 6:45Utah the public is afraid the police are
  148. 6:48desperate for a very long time nobody
  149. 6:51has a clue who did all this or how to
  150. 6:53find them before Ted Bundy the term
  151. 6:56serial killer simply did not exist in
  152. 6:58people's minds his facade is always
  153. 7:01wellmaintained he even briefly works for
  154. 7:03the Seattle crime commission and writes
  155. 7:05a rap prevention pamphlet for women
  156. 7:08Bundy knows exactly how to not leave any
  157. 7:10evidence DNA tests were not yet invented
  158. 7:13and even if the police would find
  159. 7:15something departments at the time rarely
  160. 7:17shared information across state
  161. 7:20borders but on November 8th 1974 Ted
  162. 7:24Bundy makes a crucial mistake he leaves
  163. 7:28a witness
  164. 7:32[Music]

  209. 9:16a complaint Carol smells a slight whiff
  210. 9:19of alcohol and starts feeling uneasy but
  211. 9:21the officer shows her a badge and she
  212. 9:23agrees to come with him they go to the

  224. 9:53quickly jumps out of the car the man
  225. 9:56chases after her and pulls out a crowbar
  226. 9:58he hits the woman once twice but Carol
  227. 10:01holds up her arms in defense fighting

  241. 10:36reported suspicious Behavior by her
  242. 10:37boyfriend she saw an eyewitness drawing

  249. 10:54lineup eight suspects in total are
  250. 10:57standing in line including the man Bob

  263. 11:29[Music]
  264. 11:36here in his second trial Bundy decides
  265. 11:39to defend himself in court he is a law
  266. 11:41student after all and a very confident
  267. 11:43one for that Bundy receives slightly
  268. 11:45more freedom from the judge than other
  269. 11:47prisoners a typewriter a desk unlimited
  270. 11:50and untapped phone calls and access to
  271. 11:53the law library in the courthouse there
  272. 11:55you can move freely without shackles or
  273. 11:57handcuffs
  274. 12:00Bundy's trial is in full swing during a
  275. 12:02recess he goes to the library his guard
  276. 12:04is in the hallway smoking a cigarette it
  277. 12:06is a sunny day the sky is blue and Ted
  278. 12:09Bundy jumps from a secondstory
  279. 12:11window the fall is hard but after
  280. 12:14landing he immediately runs across the
  281. 12:16street over a fence and into an Alleyway
  282. 12:19from there he Sprints to a river and
  283. 12:20from there straight to the
  284. 12:22mountains Bundy planned his Escape for
  285. 12:25weeks jumping from his bunk bed to
  286. 12:26strengthen his ankles going through his
  287. 12:28exact Escape Route again and again
  288. 12:30putting on a second layer of clothes
  289. 12:32under his courtroom outfit practicing
  290. 12:33how fast he can change getting a haircut
  291. 12:36shaving his
  292. 12:38beard a woman rushes into the courthouse
  293. 12:41and informs a guard that she saw a man
  294. 12:42jumping from one of the windows the
  295. 12:44guards immediately sweep the floor from
  296. 12:46the moment Bundy leap from the windows
  297. 12:48it takes them 10 minutes to realize he's
  298. 12:50gone the police set up roadblocks they
  299. 12:53send blood hounds into the mountains and
  300. 12:54tell the residents to lock their doors
  301. 12:57radio stations and newspapers quickly
  302. 12:59cover the Escape 150 policemen are now
  303. 13:02hunting a killer on the
  304. 13:05loose Ted Bundy wanders through the
  305. 13:07mountains he has nothing with him no
  306. 13:09money no food no plan only a light shirt
  307. 13:13and his pants and since he defended
  308. 13:14himself in court a map of the area that
  309. 13:17was used in the trial a whole day he
  310. 13:19hikes up the grassy Hills and by
  311. 13:21Nightfall manages to cross the aspen
  312. 13:23Mountain the next morning however is
  313. 13:25cold and rainy so instead of wandering
  314. 13:28further south he tracks back and finds a
  315. 13:30small cabin where he stays for the
  316. 13:33night on day three Bundy leaves the
  317. 13:35cabin now better equipped he has some
  318. 13:38food warm clothes and a rifle on this
  319. 13:41day the FBI joins The Manhunt bringing
  320. 13:43in
  321. 13:45helicopters despite the map Bundy gets
  322. 13:47lost when a rainstorm hits he becomes
  323. 13:50even more disoriented the cold is doing
  324. 13:52the rest he eventually starts walking in
  325. 13:54circles and lands back at the cabin
  326. 13:57there he finds tracks of the search part
  327. 13:59they're on to him for 5 full days Bundy
  328. 14:02is hiking through the hills with his
  329. 14:04ankles swollen and his food running low
  330. 14:06he finds himself back in Aspen his only
  331. 14:09chance of Escape is to find a car at a
  332. 14:12golf course he finally finds an old
  333. 14:13Cadillac with the keys
  334. 14:16inside it's the morning of the sixth day
  335. 14:18of Bundy's escape two police officers
  336. 14:21see a Cadillac zigzagging on the road
  337. 14:23they stop the car assuming it's a drunk
  338. 14:25driver instead they find a sober but
  339. 14:28weak Ted bunny
  340. 14:29he lost over 20 lb and barely managed to
  341. 14:32steer the car his nose is wrapped in
  342. 14:34band-aid and he wears glasses but the
  343. 14:36officers easily recognize him he is
  344. 14:38arrested only two blocks from where he
  345. 14:40jumped out of the window back in custody
  346. 14:43Bundy now also faces charges for escape
  347. 14:46he has to wear shackles and handcuffs
  348. 14:47when in court it matters little to him
  349. 14:50almost immediately he starts planning
  350. 14:52another Escape
  351. 14:59a guard brings Ted Bundy a warm meal to
  352. 15:01his cell and leaves but Bundy doesn't
  353. 15:03touch it instead he lifts himself up
  354. 15:06into a small hole in his ceiling in the
  355. 15:08weeks prior he used a hacksaw he got
  356. 15:10from another inmate on an already loose
  357. 15:12light fixture to cut open a hole to fit
  358. 15:15in there he had to lose weight so he
  359. 15:17reduced his meal sizes by constantly
  360. 15:18complaining about the food as a cover
  361. 15:21Bundy is prepared he accumulated $700
  362. 15:24from donations for his defense in the
  363. 15:26weeks before his Escape he used the
  364. 15:28trapo Reg regly searching for a way out
  365. 15:31and he found one the vent leads to a
  366. 15:33small apartment of a prison
  367. 15:36guard Bundy crawls through the tight
  368. 15:38shaft when he reaches the apartment he
  369. 15:40hears
  370. 15:41voices the guard and his wife are eating
  371. 15:43dinner Bundy just sits there waiting for
  372. 15:45his opportunity the woman says let's go
  373. 15:48to a movie tonight sure why not the
  374. 15:51guard replies a few minutes later the
  375. 15:53door slams shut and Bundy drops into the
  376. 15:56apartment's bedroom he puts on a pair of
  377. 15:58blue jeans a gray turtleneck and blue
  378. 16:00tennis shoes then he walks out of the
  379. 16:02street through the front door this time
  380. 16:04it takes the guards 17 hours before they
  381. 16:07realize what just
  382. 16:09happened Bundy has long
  383. 16:21vanished it is a quiet night on campus
  384. 16:24the parties have mostly ended and the
  385. 16:25local nightclub is closed for over an
  386. 16:27hour now Nida Neri comes back from a
  387. 16:30date with her boyfriend when she tries
  388. 16:32to enter her sorority house chai Omega
  389. 16:35she notices that the door is
  390. 16:37unlocked she enters and finds that the
  391. 16:39lights are still on a few seconds later
  392. 16:42she hears a loud noise from upstairs
  393. 16:44followed by footsteps a man comes
