- 0:00Check this out. When Jesus hung on the
- 0:02cross, he said, "My God, my God, why
- 0:06have you forsaken me?"
- 0:08Because Jesus wasn't just saying words,
- 0:10he was quoting scripture.
- 0:13He was pointing us to Psalm 22.
- 0:16Because Psalm 22 opens with the exact
- 0:18same words, "My God, my God, why have
- 0:21you forsaken me?" But today, I just want
- 0:23to focus on one verse
- 0:26in Psalm 22. [music]
- 0:27Verse 6 says, "But I
- 0:32am a worm
- 0:33>> [music]
- 0:34>> and not a man."
- 0:36The common Hebrew word for worm is
- 0:40remah, [music]
- 0:41but the word used in this verse 6 is not
- 0:43remah, it is tola'ath. Tola'ath refers
- 0:46to a very, very specific type of worm
- 0:48called the crimson worm.
- 0:51>> [music]
- 0:52>> What does Jesus want us to know about
- 0:54this crimson worm?
- 0:56>> [music]
- 0:56>> But I'm going to spare you the
- 0:57scientific details
- 0:59and just read to you how Brooke
- 1:02Ligertwood beautifully describes it.
- 1:04[music]
- 1:05A crimson worm only lays eggs once
- 1:08in her lifetime. [music]
- 1:10When her time has come, the crimson worm
- 1:13inches her way up a tree
- 1:15and she adheres herself on the wood.
- 1:17>> [music]
- 1:18>> As she takes her position and presses
- 1:20her body against the wood,
- 1:22she forms a hard crimson colored shell
- 1:25which welds her [music] to the wood
- 1:26surface.
- 1:28Her choice is made
- 1:30and it's permanent.
- 1:33>> [music]
- 1:33>> This is the position in which she spends
- 1:35the rest of her natural life.
- 1:38And it's there under her body, under the
- 1:40[music] instinctive protective crimson
- 1:42shell, that her children are born.
- 1:45>> [music]
- 1:46>> And then the most peculiar thing
- 1:47happens.
- 1:49The children of the tola'ath begins
- 1:51[music] feeding on the living body of
- 1:53the mother for the next 3 days.
- 1:58>> [music]
- 1:58>> I am a tola'ath, a crimson worm and not
- 2:02a man.
- 2:03And after 3 days, the crimson worm gives
- 2:06[music] up her life.
- 2:08And as she does,
- 2:10one of the most profound events in all
- 2:12of nature takes place.
- 2:15From the body of the mother, a blood red
- 2:18[music] substance begins to flow that
- 2:20stains the wood to which she has been
- 2:22attached.
- 2:24The crimson worm has one purpose for
- 2:26climbing that tree,
- 2:27>> [music]
- 2:28>> sacrifice.
- 2:30The only way for her children to live
- 2:33>> [music]
- 2:33>> is for her to die.
- 2:35She willingly climbs up that tree
- 2:37knowing that she will not come down
- 2:39alive. Jesus Christ has one [music]
- 2:41purpose in coming into this world,
- 2:45sacrifice.
- 2:47The only way for us [music] to live is
- 2:49for him to die. This is how we know what
- 2:52love is.
- 2:53>> [music]
- 2:53>> Christ Jesus laid down his life for us.
- 2:58That was absolutely powerful.
