  1. 0:0010 seconds.
  2. 0:04A sixth of a minute may seem fast, but to some...
  3. 0:13A champion, a winner, a world record.
  4. 0:16All within reach in a mere 10 seconds.
  5. 0:23But behind those few seconds were years of dedication and hard work.
  6. 0:26You overlook a lot of stuff leading up to that moment.
  7. 0:29Just like how you might have overlooked this anime.
  8. 0:47Togashi is a born sprinter, naturally gifted with speed.
  9. 0:51In sixth grade, he's crushing everyone.
  10. 0:53While Komiya...
  11. 0:56He hyperventilates and looks like he's about to die every time he runs.
  12. 0:59These two are the complete opposites.
  13. 1:01They even have different outlooks on running.
  14. 1:03Togashi runs because he is fast, so it's instinct that he runs.
  15. 1:07While Komiya...
  16. 1:08runs to escape reality.
  17. 1:10He's not built like Togashi.
  18. 1:11He sucks at running and it hurts to run.
  19. 1:13But if that could distract him from the world,
  20. 1:15then that's all he needs.
  21. 1:16Togashi hears that and goes,
  22. 1:18Well, that's dumb as fuck.
  23. 1:22Dumb, you say?
  24. 1:23Uh, I mean...
  25. 1:24Your mom's kinda hot.
  26. 1:25I have no friends, no Robux...
  27. 1:27and no idea on how to solve the problems in my life.
  28. 1:29So, I run.
  29. 1:30Even though I know it's dumb.
  30. 1:31yeah that is dumb as fuck
  31. 1:33There is only one rule in this world that I believe in.
  32. 1:35That your mom's kinda hot?
  33. 1:36That running the 100-meter dash faster than anyone else can solve almost anything.
  34. 1:43well that's dumb as fuck-
  35. 1:44Togashi and Komiya become homies.
  36. 1:46Komiya sucks at running, so Togashi trains him like a Pokémon.
  37. 1:49And now Komiya has a new found reason to run.
  38. 1:51To be faster and win a gold medal at school.
  39. 1:53It's kinda wholesome.
  40. 1:54You see two buddies bond over a sport.
  41. 1:56Togashi pushes Komiya to achieve his goal.
  42. 1:58But what's Togashi's goal?
  43. 2:00We know that Komiya wants to win, but we don't really know why Togashi runs.
  44. 2:04In fact, he himself doesn't know the reason.
  45. 2:06He doesn't strive to win.
  46. 2:08There's no grand ambition or goal.
  47. 2:09So while one of them is putting his life on the line...
  48. 2:12the other doesn't really give a shit.
  49. 2:13They eventually race each other and Komiya chases him with the grit of an abusive husband.
  50. 2:18The outcome was expected,
  51. 2:19so there wasn't really a need for Togashi to go all out.
  52. 2:21And Komiya ends up face-palming himself at the end.
  53. 2:24Hyperventilating and limps off to the horizon.
  54. 2:26That was the last time Togashi ever saw Komiya.
  55. 2:31A few years later, Togashi's now in high school
  56. 2:33and you would think he's on path to be the next Usain Bolt but...
  57. 2:37Togashi's washed up.
  58. 2:39The guy who once won every single meet he was in
  59. 2:41now gets excited over bread.
  60. 2:42What happened to our prodigy?
  61. 2:44What is a national-level athlete doing at a normal high school?
  62. 2:48Some say he's injured...
  63. 2:49health problems...
  64. 2:50but deep down...
  65. 2:51Togashi's given up.
  66. 2:52The fear creeped in and Togashi's set on a new chapter of his life, away from running.
  67. 2:57Until the huzz shows up and he's like;
  68. 3:05Boom, he's reignited the fire.
  69. 3:08100 meters is a movie that you got to watch at least two or three times
  70. 3:11to truly understand what it's about cuz...
  71. 3:14there's a lot of subtext and nuances that you will overlook on your first watch.
  72. 3:20The story doesn't pause for you to take it all in.
  73. 3:22😏
  74. 3:22You need to keep your eyes and ears peeled to really catch what they're saying.
  75. 3:26Some are practically Socrates incarnate,
  76. 3:28parting wisdom so dense
  77. 3:29you don't even know what he just said.
  78. 3:31But if you lean closer...
  79. 3:32you can hear the fourth wall start to crack
  80. 3:34and the conversation becomes personal.
  81. 3:37If you've watched the movie, you know what I'm talking about.
  82. 3:40But if you haven't...
  83. 3:40I know where your eyes have been looking.
  84. 3:42You've been focusing on it for the past minute.
  85. 3:50100 meters is a five volume manga
  86. 3:51written and illustrated by the same guy who made-
  87. 3:57The movie was animated by Rock'n Roll Mountain.
  88. 3:59Haven't heard of them?
  89. 4:00Yeah, cuz it's like their second project
  90. 4:02with the first one being this-
  91. 4:12this went on for 30 seconds
  92. 4:14Kenji Iwaisawa is the founder of Rock'n Roll Mountain
  93. 4:17and the backbone of his studio.
  94. 4:18The first anime they took on,
  95. 4:19man I don't even know what this shit's about.
  96. 4:21But this hour-long movie only had five people working on it.
  97. 4:25And if you look closer, Kenji took on every possible role.
  98. 4:28Animating over 40,000 frames alone.
  99. 4:31Taking over 7 years to finish the film.
  100. 4:33And if there's one thing about Kenji is that he loves his rotoscope-
  101. 4:39Rotoscoping is a technique where animators trace  over live-action footage to create a scene.
  102. 4:45No.
  103. 4:46If you think rotoscoping is just drawing over an image,
  104. 4:48you're not wrong to think that.
  105. 4:50But it's not just copy-paste animation.
  106. 4:52A lot of people think it's lazy, but some fail to realize
  107. 4:54that it actually takes more time to rotoscope than a normal key animation.
  108. 4:58You still got to draw every frame and make it look good.
  109. 5:00The anime industry does not like this technique.
  110. 5:03They say it's not very "anime" like which...
  111. 5:05I kind of agree.
  112. 5:06Some of these scenes reminds me of those AI filters
  113. 5:08you know the-
  114. 5:12The industry does not approve of it.
  115. 5:14The people are not really fond of it.
  116. 5:16You gotta like own your own animation studio for this to even work.
  117. 5:2310 years after high school and Togashi's still nowhere near Bolt.
  118. 5:26He even almost got cut from being a pro runner.
  119. 5:28I don't get it.
  120. 5:29He's the main character.
  121. 5:30He's supposed to win and be the champion but...
  122. 5:33an hour into the movie, you realize it's not that kind of show.
  123. 5:36From the start of the movie,
  124. 5:37from the start of this video...
  125. 5:39you never really knew why Togashi runs.
  126. 5:41He lacks ambition and commitment.
  127. 5:43He even comes to a point where he breaks down crying after saying defeat is a part of life.
  128. 5:48That's a tough pill to swallow.
  129. 5:50At some point, your mind starts thinking...
  130. 5:53"this isn't about running, is it?"
  131. 5:54I have read story after story that uses sports as a disguise,
  132. 5:58but in reality...
  133. 5:59it ends up being a life lesson.
  134. 6:01Togashi, Komiya, Nigami, Zaitsu, Kaidou
  135. 6:03are all runners that run on the same track but
  136. 6:05each for different reasons.
  137. 6:07You're gonna relate to at least one of them.
  138. 6:09One's running to chase records.
  139. 6:11Another's running because he believes in himself.
  140. 6:13Another's been on the top for so long that it becomes lonely.
  141. 6:16Ultimately, as long as you understand why you're running,
  142. 6:19that's all that really matters.
  143. 6:21Because running the 100-meter dash faster than anyone else can solve almost anything.
  144. 6:25When you give your best to something and believe in yourself,
  145. 6:28everything just starts to shine and you feel the world is yours.
  146. 6:32It's the same principles I take to creating content.
  147. 6:34I'm not chasing views or subs
  148. 6:36or increasing my Patreon members.
  149. 6:38I run because I want to.
  150. 6:40Because I LOVE to.
  151. 6:42It's not the pursuit of happiness, but the happiness of the pursuit.
  152. 6:45There's no greater feeling than investing in myself and seeing myself grow.
  153. 6:48It gives my life meaning.
  154. 6:50Togashi never went all-in against Komiya because there was no meaning to it.
  155. 6:54He knew he was faster, so to him...
  156. 6:56the race had already ended before it even started.
  157. 6:59But if you're gonna run like that...
  158. 7:00don't be surprised when someone else overtakes you or
  159. 7:0320 years later, you end up regretting not giving it your all.
  160. 7:06YOU GOT TO WANT IT.
  161. 7:07YOU GOT TO UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WANT IT
  162. 7:09and pace yourself because if you don't...
  163. 7:11you might just lose yourself in the race.
  164. 7:13It took our characters 30 years to figure out why they run for 10 seconds,
  165. 7:16but for you...
  166. 7:17hopefully,
  167. 7:18just an hour and 46 minutes.
  168. 7:20So...
