  1. 0:00The Great Fire of London. How did it
  2. 0:03start?
  3. 0:05The Great Fire of London started on the
  4. 0:08morning of Sunday, the 2nd of September,
  5. 0:111666,
  6. 0:13in a baker's shop on Pudding Lane. The
  7. 0:15baker was called Thomas Farriner. A fire
  8. 0:19for baking had not been put out.
  9. 0:22The fire spread through the bakery and
  10. 0:25soon towards other buildings. The Great
  11. 0:28Fire had begun.
  12. 0:30The fire spread easily because many of
  13. 0:32the buildings in London were made out of
  14. 0:35wood. The wood was also very dry because
  15. 0:39the weather had been hot and dry.
  16. 0:42The buildings were very close together
  17. 0:45and it was windy, which also helped the
  18. 0:47fire to spread.
  19. 0:49In 1666,
  20. 0:51London had no fire brigade. Fire posts
  21. 0:54were set up and people all joined in to
  22. 0:57try and stop the fire.
  23. 0:59Buildings were pulled down and water was
  24. 1:02thrown using leather buckets and water
  25. 1:05squirts.
  26. 1:06This did not stop the fire and so it
  27. 1:09continued to spread.
  28. 1:11This type of fire engine was used in
  29. 1:13London in 1666.
  30. 1:17It was pushed to where it needed and
  31. 1:19people used buckets of water to fill it
  32. 1:22up.
  33. 1:23Water squirted out of the spout in the
  34. 1:25middle when the handles were pumped.
  35. 1:28Four people were needed to make it work
  36. 1:30and it was hard and tiring.
  37. 1:33Many buildings were being destroyed by
  38. 1:35the fire or pulled down with hooks to
  39. 1:37try and stop the fire from spreading.
  40. 1:40People had to carry their belongings to
  41. 1:42safety using boats on the River Thames.
  42. 1:47St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed in
  43. 1:50the fire. Although it was mostly made of
  44. 1:52stone, the tower had wooden scaffolding
  45. 1:55around it, which meant that the fire
  46. 1:57spread more quickly. The heat of the
  47. 2:00fire melted the cathedral's lead roof
  48. 2:02and caused the stone to break apart.
  49. 2:06Because the wind had died down and many
  50. 2:09houses were pulled down to stop the fire
  51. 2:11spreading, the fire stopped.
  52. 2:14It is recorded that six people died, but
  53. 2:18thousands of people were left homeless,
  54. 2:20lost their business, or lost many of
  55. 2:23their possessions.
  56. 2:25Can you remember the reason why the fire
  57. 2:28spread so quickly?
  58. 2:33Yes, because the houses were made of
  59. 2:35wood and had straw roofs. The houses
  60. 2:38were very close together.
  61. 2:41It was also very windy.
  62. 2:43And there were no fire brigades.
  63. 2:46Don't forget to check out the next video
  64. 2:48to find out what happened after the
  65. 2:51Great Fire of London.
