- 0:00the human brain can process 11 million
- 0:02bits of information every second but the
- 0:05vast majority of this is completed by
- 0:08the subconscious mind the conscious mind
- 0:10although impressive only processes a
- 0:13tiny fraction of this 40 to 50 bits per
- 0:17second what this often results in is US
- 0:20feeling emotions and recollecting
- 0:23Sensations before we even really know
- 0:25why it's what causes us to smile when we
- 0:28see a stranger across the room laughing
- 0:31at something we don't know what they're
- 0:33laughing at and they're not engaging
- 0:34with us but we feel happiness it's what
- 0:37causes the hair on our necks to stand on
- 0:40end and our heart to race if we walk
- 0:42into an environment which we're unsure
- 0:44of we have a feeling that it's not safe
- 0:47but we can't pinpoint where exactly the
- 0:50danger is both these scenarios are our
- 0:53brains collecting thousands of pieces of
- 0:56information from our surroundings
- 0:58attempting to perceive what we're seeing
- 1:01based on past experiences and
- 1:03recollected memories stored deep down a
- 1:06great room design can use this
- 1:08involuntary reflex of the mind to its
- 1:10Advantage imagine someone walking into a
- 1:12home which has been recreated to mimic
- 1:14the look of a Hobbit house but they have
- 1:17not been told they're walking into that
- 1:19kind of home as soon as they step inside
- 1:22they look up and they pause a smile
- 1:24comes to their face they say this feels
- 1:27like it's from a movie I know this movie
- 1:30this is a hobbit house in the Shire from
- 1:33that movie The Lord of the Rings this
- 1:35looks like billbo baggins's house all of
- 1:38that speaking following the person's
- 1:40entry into the room is their conscious
- 1:42mind trying to reach the understanding
- 1:45as to why their subconscious mind
- 1:47signaled them to smile in the first
- 1:49place my name is chrey and today I'm
- 1:52going to show you how we turned a dismal
- 1:55left for dead room into a space that any
- 1:58golfer could walk in and appreciate if
- 2:01you're a returning subscriber hit the
- 2:02thumbs up if you're new here hopefully
- 2:05by the end of this video you'll be a
- 2:07subscriber remember that if you would
- 2:08like my help in designing your room you
- 2:11can have that help by clicking the link
- 2:13in the description below let's turn
- 2:16towards the computer and you'll be able
- 2:17to see what I see Rachel who follows the
- 2:21channel had contacted me in regards to
- 2:23designing the entirety of the main level
- 2:25of her and her husband's new home this
- 2:28home was a great find and that it sits
- 2:29right on the golf course her husband
- 2:31loves Golf and she's also exploring the
- 2:34sport acquiring the property at a fair
- 2:36price has allowed them to budget a
- 2:38redesign of the home and make it
- 2:40something special for their family for
- 2:43the purpose of this video we're going to
- 2:45focus on the living room which we often
- 2:47refer to as the fireplace room this room
- 2:50is to be the designated hosting room of
- 2:53the house Rachel and her husband often
- 2:54host guests and friends at least once a
- 2:57week it was important that we made a
- 2:59room that felt refined and distinguished
- 3:02yet welcoming and inviting sometimes
- 3:04designed rooms can feel so polished that
- 3:07walking through them with your shoes or
- 3:09touching anything will give you anxiety
- 3:12we didn't want that the goal in this
- 3:14design was to create a sense of charm
- 3:16and admiration for a highclass space
- 3:19that would be comparable to the social
- 3:21rooms you would find within noteworthy
- 3:23golf clubhouses we did have some
- 3:26parameters a small list to work within
- 3:28that Rachel had mentioned to me she had
- 3:30an affection for the original Spanish
- 3:32tiling on the floor so our aim was to
- 3:34leave that alone and find a look which
- 3:37would complimented her and her husband
- 3:39had two sofas from their old house that
- 3:41they wanted to use one of them was a
- 3:43velvet green the other was a sort of tan
- 3:46camel type color one of their regular
- 3:49hosting events is poker night so we
- 3:51needed a space where that could be
- 3:52accomplished they loved the idea of
- 3:54bookshelves but they weren't sure if
- 3:57those current bookshelves in the room or
- 3:59the place of them was ideal Rachel used
- 4:02to be in the service and hospitality
- 4:04industry and knows her way around making
- 4:06a great cocktail in order to best serve
- 4:09their guests their friends their family
- 4:11they wanted direct accessibility to
- 4:13beverages glasses and the mixers used to
- 4:16create those drinks and finally their
- 4:18boys play piano and have been taking
- 4:21lessons so they were eager to have a
- 4:23place in the home where that piano could
- 4:26go here is what we came up with
- 4:30this room really came together given the
- 4:33color parameters we had between the two
- 4:34sofas and keeping the original flooring
- 4:37it actually worked out quite well
- 4:39because we were able to mimic the color
- 4:41combinations of what you would find on
- 4:43the green for those of you unfamiliar
- 4:45with the term that's part of the golf
- 4:46course you're out on The Fairway you're
- 4:49playing golf what are the colors that
- 4:51you're seeing when you look up varying
- 4:53colors of green Browns and reds from the
- 4:56wooded areas in the rough beiges and
- 4:58tans from the sand with in the bunkers
- 5:00and whites the golf ball itself Flags
- 5:03carts clouds in the sky we were able to
- 5:06bring all of those together making for
- 5:09an easygoing transition from course to
- 5:12home and from home to course considering
- 5:15that you can see the course from this
- 5:17room's window it really creates a sense
- 5:20of joy for someone who loves golf the
- 5:24paint color we used in the room is
- 5:25called fox hall green by Sherwin
- 5:28Williams this color is complex with its
- 5:31mixtures of slate and yellow undertones
- 5:33but it is so beautifully sophisticated
- 5:37the shade of the color works very well
- 5:39in rooms that have a bit of natural
- 5:40light from Windows or doors it does an
- 5:43excellent job of creating that Moody
- 5:46vibe that I know so many of you enjoy
- 5:49when standing in the living room and
- 5:50looking towards the window and door
- 5:52there's quite a bit to break down here
- 5:55so let's try to quickly disassemble the
- 5:57design in its totality and see see why
- 6:00it works the two sofas I mentioned these
- 6:03were going to go into the room
- 6:05regardless and we needed to design
- 6:07around
- 6:08them the Velvet green sofa makes it
- 6:11quite obvious as to what how and why we
- 6:13arrived at our paint color as for the
- 6:16other sofa the tan one this particular
- 6:19shade was not something I was looking to
- 6:22use more than once in the room but I had
- 6:24no problem in using other colors which
- 6:27could be extracted from that tan shade
- 6:31remember that nearly every color is
- 6:32simply the sum of a bunch of other
- 6:35colors mixed together if you're able to
- 6:37pull the colors out as if they were
- 6:40ingredients in a recipe you're likely to
- 6:43find something that you can pair nicely
- 6:46in the room this leads us to the beige
- 6:49colored drapes it's part of that tan
- 6:51family and it serves the purpose of
- 6:53achieving the sand tones we wanted from
- 6:56the golf course now here's something you
- 6:58might have to pay a little bit more
- 7:00close attention to in order to pick up
- 7:03on if you were to take the sofa and you
- 7:06put it in a blender with the drapes the
- 7:09Hue that you would come out with would
- 7:11be something very similar to that of the
- 7:14wood beams that we put on the
- 7:16ceiling that stain on that wood is
- 7:19called warm caramel and that is how we
- 7:23tied the tan from the low point to the
- 7:26high point you might be asking why would
- 7:30you even bother putting the wood beams
- 7:32on the ceiling at all golf is quite an
- 7:35old sport it stems from the 15th century
- 7:37if you were to picture Interiors from
- 7:39that time frame you could expect to see
- 7:42a lot of peaked ceilings and a lot of
- 7:45exposed truss trusses even the ceilings
- 7:49that were not peaked in those times it
- 7:51would be likely that you would see some
- 7:54type of raw framework and decorative
- 7:56ceiling pattern our inclusion of the be
- 7:59the wood beams it pays homage to the age
- 8:03of the sport and the times in which it
- 8:06originated the piano found its home in
- 8:09front of the large window it does have
- 8:11that traditional gloss black coat to it
- 8:14black was not something we were
- 8:15initially trying to put in this design
- 8:18but we couldn't have the piano sitting
- 8:19out like a sore thumb and nothing to
- 8:21help blend it so we found it some
- 8:23friends nothing overbearing um small
- 8:26items that would assist the black in
- 8:28merging with the rest of the design a
- 8:30skinny floor lamp the light coffee table
- 8:33and a compact side table that was it
- 8:36looking at the fireplace side of the
- 8:37room is relatively straightforward on
- 8:40the wall you have a medley of three
- 8:42highdefinition photographs of Fairways
- 8:46we organized the photo frame sizing in
- 8:48such a way that seemed the most visually
- 8:51appealing oftentimes Gallery walls are
- 8:55something that you have to play around
- 8:58with sometimes you want a collection of
- 9:00photos to have a clear a clear edging a
- 9:03clear perimeter which they're all
- 9:05working within sometimes you allow for a
- 9:08little bit of play outside of those
- 9:10lines my best advice is to go with your
- 9:13gut then take 10 steps back look at it
- 9:17again and find out whether your gut was
- 9:19lying to you I wanted the fireplace here
- 9:22to be a point of interest but I didn't
- 9:25want the entire section of that wall to
- 9:27be the focal point as soon as you walk
- 9:29into the room dealing with this was a
- 9:32simple approach of making the brick Fade
- 9:34Into the background and pulling the
- 9:37fireplace into the foreground I did like
- 9:40the brick but I liked it for its texture
- 9:43not for its color so we continued the
- 9:45fox hall green right over it the
- 9:48fireplace itself had been treated like a
- 9:50second class citizen we gave it a fresh
- 9:52Ivory mantle surround to embrace it and
- 9:55provide that distinction it deserves the
- 9:58largest wall in the room did become the
- 10:01elongated bookshelf display the center
- 10:04of it has that glass paneling that you
- 10:06can see and that became the beverage and
- 10:09bar area if you're someone who has been
- 10:11wanting to include a bar or display in
- 10:14your room but you've struggled to find
- 10:17the space to do so try to reframe your
- 10:20mind from thinking of how to add more
- 10:23pieces into the room and instead focus
- 10:26on how you can repurpose something that
- 10:29you already have or finding a way that
- 10:31an existing piece can become
- 10:34multi-purpose we had no way to integrate
- 10:37a full-sized bar without crowding the
- 10:39room or the whole design becoming kind
- 10:42of tacky using a portion of the
- 10:44bookshelves to accommodate this feature
- 10:46seemed like a more graceful option with
- 10:49a smart look you have now seen the
- 10:51transformation of a living room with no
- 10:53personality reborn with a connection to
- 10:57its environment and the people that live
- 10:59within it if you like the video hit the
- 11:01thumbs up if you feel like sticking
- 11:03around a while feel free to subscribe
