- 0:05Revelation 4 and 5.
- 0:08After this I looked, and behold a door
- 0:10standing open in heaven. And the first
- 0:12voice which I had heard speaking to me
- 0:14like a trumpet said,
- 0:16"Come up here, and I will show you what
- 0:18must take place after this."
- 0:20At once I was in the Spirit, and behold
- 0:21a throne stood in heaven with one seated
- 0:24on the throne. And he who sat there had
- 0:26the appearance of jasper and carnelian.
- 0:28And around the throne was a rainbow that
- 0:30had the appearance of an emerald.
- 0:32Around the throne were 24 thrones, and
- 0:34seated on the thrones were 24 elders
- 0:37clothed in white garments with golden
- 0:39crowns on their heads.
- 0:41From the throne came flashes of
- 0:43lightning and rumblings and peals of
- 0:45thunder. And before the throne were
- 0:46burning seven torches of fire,
- 0:49which are the seven spirits of God. And
- 0:51before the throne there was, as it were,
- 0:53a sea of glass like crystal.
- 0:56And around the throne, on each side of
- 0:58the throne, are four living creatures,
- 1:01full of eyes in front and behind. The
- 1:03first living creature like a lion, the
- 1:05second living creature like an ox, the
- 1:07third living creature with the face of a
- 1:09man, and the fourth living creature like
- 1:10an eagle in flight. And the four living
- 1:13creatures, each of them with six wings,
- 1:15are full of eyes all around and within.
- 1:18And day and night they never cease to
- 1:21say,
- 1:22"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God
- 1:25almighty, who was and is and is to
- 1:28come." And whenever the living creatures
- 1:30give glory and honor and thanks to him
- 1:32who is seated on the throne, who lives
- 1:34forever and ever, the 24 elders fall
- 1:37down before him who is seated on the
- 1:39throne and worship him who lives forever
- 1:43and ever. They cast their crowns before
- 1:45the throne saying, "Worthy are you, our
- 1:48Lord and God, to receive glory and honor
- 1:51and power. For you created all things,
- 1:54and by your will they existed and were
- 1:56created."
- 1:58Then I saw on the right hand of him who
- 2:00was seated on the throne a scroll
- 2:02written within and on the back, sealed
- 2:03with seven seals. And I saw a mighty
- 2:06angel proclaiming with a loud voice,
- 2:08"Who is worthy to open the scroll and
- 2:10break its seals?"
- 2:12And no one in heaven or on earth or
- 2:14under the earth was able to open the
- 2:16scroll or to look into it. And I began
- 2:17to weep loudly
- 2:19because no one was found
- 2:21worthy to open the scroll or to look
- 2:23into it.
- 2:24And one of the elders said to me, "Weep
- 2:27no more. Behold, the lion of the tribe
- 2:30of Judah, the root of David, has
- 2:33conquered so that he can open the scroll
- 2:36and its seven seals."
- 2:38And between the throne and the four
- 2:40living creatures and among the elders I
- 2:41saw a lamb standing as though it had
- 2:45been slain, with seven horns and with
- 2:46seven eyes, which are the seven spirits
- 2:49of God sent out into all the earth. And
- 2:51he went and took the scroll from the
- 2:53right hand of him who was seated on the
- 2:55throne. And when he had taken the
- 2:57scroll, the four living creatures and
- 2:59the 24 elders fell down before the lamb,
- 3:02each holding a harp and golden bowls
- 3:04full of incense, which are the prayers
- 3:06of the saints. And they sang a new song
- 3:09saying,
- 3:12"Worthy
- 3:13is the Lamb to open the scroll and to
- 3:15open its seals, for you were slain and
- 3:18by your blood you ransomed people for
- 3:20God from every tribe and language and
- 3:22people and nation. And you have made
- 3:24them a kingdom and priests to our God,
- 3:26and they shall reign on the earth." Then
- 3:29I looked, and I heard around the throne
- 3:31and living creatures and the elders the
- 3:33voice of many angels numbering myriads
- 3:36of myriads and thousands of thousands
- 3:38saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the
- 3:40Lamb who was slain to receive power and
- 3:43wealth and wisdom and might and honor
- 3:45and glory and in heaven and on earth and
- 3:48under the earth and in the sea and all
- 3:49that is in them saying, "To him who sits
- 3:52on the throne and to the Lamb
- 3:55be blessing and honor and glory and
- 3:59might forever and ever." And the four
- 4:02living creatures said, "Amen."
- 4:05And the elders fell down and worshipped.
- 4:11If you have the word of this God, and I
- 4:15hope you do, let me invite you to open
- 4:17with me to
- 4:18Revelation
- 4:20chapter 4.
- 4:23Let me invite you to pull out those
- 4:25notes that are in
- 4:27the worship guide you received when you
- 4:29came in.
- 4:32Revelation
- 4:34chapter
- 4:354, where the good just keeps getting
- 4:39better.
- 4:42So, we have just seen a
- 4:44grand
- 4:46majestic portrait of the gospel and of
- 4:49Jesus in Revelation 1.
- 4:53Then we have heard
- 4:54piercing
- 4:56penetrating words from Christ to his
- 4:58church in Revelation 2 and 3.
- 5:02And now tonight we come to
- 5:04two of the most glorious chapters in the
- 5:07entire Bible in Revelation 4 and 5.
- 5:11The glory of the triune God on display
- 5:14for
- 5:15all to see.
- 5:17A glimpse of
- 5:19the Lamb who is worthy of the worship of
- 5:21every language and people and tribe and
- 5:24nation.
- 5:25So, I've got to tell you one quick
- 5:27family story.
- 5:29We were having
- 5:31family worship not
- 5:32long ago. It was one particular night.
- 5:34It was actually at the end of June when
- 5:35we were finishing up the the Matthew
- 5:37series.
- 5:38And it was a Saturday night before I was
- 5:41preaching on the Great Commission the
- 5:42next morning.
- 5:44And so, most of you know our family
- 5:46makeup. Just in case you don't, we have
- 5:48uh our first son we adopted from
- 5:50Kazakhstan, our second and Caleb, our
- 5:53second son Joshua came along the more
- 5:55natural way. Our third child, Mary Ruth,
- 5:58we adopted from China back in December.
- 6:00And then we have fourth son, Lord
- 6:02willing, on the way around Thanksgiving,
- 6:04Isaiah James. So,
- 6:06we're sitting around having family
- 6:07worship that night, and I told the kids,
- 6:09I said, "You know, Daddy's going to
- 6:11preach tomorrow on making disciples of
- 6:14all nations." And I said, "So, let's
- 6:15pray
- 6:16that tomorrow God might raise up some
- 6:19people from Brook Hills to go to other
- 6:21nations."
- 6:22And I looked at Caleb, and I said,
- 6:24"Tomorrow, buddy, God might raise up
- 6:27somebody to go to Kazakhstan to tell
- 6:29people about Jesus." And he just kind of
- 6:31smiled.
- 6:32And I looked toward Mary Ruth, and I
- 6:33said,
- 6:34"Tomorrow God may call somebody to go to
- 6:37China." And she didn't really know
- 6:39what's going on, but she's smiling
- 6:40anyway.
- 6:42And then I just said kind of generally,
- 6:43I said, "Tomorrow God may
- 6:46call somebody to go to Africa." And
- 6:49Joshua sits up, and with a hopeful look
- 6:52in his eyes, said, "Is that where I'm
- 6:53from?"
- 7:02It's like, "This is my place?"
- 7:06And and Caleb looked back and he was
- 7:08like, "No, Joshua, you're from
- 7:09Birmingham." And
- 7:12so,
- 7:15there is coming a day when men and women
- 7:18from Kazakhstan and China and Birmingham
- 7:20and every other place on the planet
- 7:23will behold the glory of the triune God
- 7:25and give him the praise and honor and
- 7:28worship that he is due.
- 7:30So, very simply, tonight
- 7:33I want
- 7:35to show you a portrait of God.
- 7:37And then I want you to realize the point
- 7:39for us.
- 7:41I want to tie
- 7:43this vision of God's glory
- 7:46with what we talked about last week. So,
- 7:48revolution Revelation 4 and 5 don't just
- 7:50appear out of nowhere.
- 7:53Jesus has just spoken to churches who,
- 7:55if you were here last week, you may
- 7:57remember, these are churches Revelation
- 7:592 and 3 who were walking through war
- 8:02against sin and suffering. And some of
- 8:04them were thriving, and Jesus is
- 8:06encouraging them to endure.
- 8:08Others of them are struggling, they're
- 8:10compromising, they're giving in to
- 8:11complacency.
- 8:13And all of them need encouragement to
- 8:16hold fast to God and to preach the
- 8:19gospel even at the risk of their lives.
- 8:22So, how does God motivate his people to
- 8:26stand fast in suffering?
- 8:31And how does God motivate his people to
- 8:34run away from sin?
- 8:38And how does God
- 8:40motivate his people
- 8:42to spend their lives, even lose them if
- 8:44necessary, making the gospel known?
- 8:49What I want to show you is that God
- 8:50motivates his people with a vision of
- 8:52himself.
- 8:55He says to them,
- 8:57"I want you to see your suffering in
- 8:59light of who I am.
- 9:02I want you to see your battles with sin
- 9:04in light of who Christ is.
- 9:08I want you to spread the gospel in the
- 9:10world in the view of my in view of my
- 9:13glory." So, this is the point of
- 9:14Revelation 4 and 5 for these people in
- 9:17the first century and for every person
- 9:19in this room tonight in the 21st century
- 9:22to look at everything in our lives
- 9:26through the lens
- 9:28of the glory of the triune God. That's
- 9:30my goal tonight. My goal is that you
- 9:32would walk away
- 9:34from here in a few minutes
- 9:36with new eyes, with a new perspective on
- 9:39every single thing in your life because
- 9:43you're seeing everything through the
- 9:46lens of the glory of the triune God. So,
- 9:51got a lot of ground to cover. We'll dive
- 9:53in, the portrait of God in Revelation 4
- 9:55and 5.
- 9:56Imagine
- 9:58the scene.
- 10:01As John sees a door standing open in
- 10:05heaven, and he is invited to come up and
- 10:08get a glimpse of God.
- 10:14God the Father,
- 10:16God the Son,
- 10:18and God the Holy Spirit all portrayed
- 10:21here in this kaleidoscope of heavenly
- 10:25images that absolutely takes your breath
- 10:29away.
- 10:31So, let your imagination run wild as you
- 10:33hear John describing God the Father. And
- 10:36And all of John's descriptions here are
- 10:38just saturated with Old Testament
- 10:40allusions. You compare this passage to
- 10:42Ezekiel chapter 1 and Daniel chapter 7
- 10:44and Isaiah chapter 6, other throne room
- 10:47scenes in the Bible. This is the
- 10:49culmination of all those throne room
- 10:51scenes right here as John describes God
- 10:53the Father. First of all, he is sitting
- 10:55at the center of the universe.
- 10:58So, everything in these two chapters
- 11:00revolves around the throne of God. 17
- 11:03different times that John uses the term
- 11:06throne.
- 11:07And God's throne is at the center of
- 11:09everything.
- 11:10The picture is
- 11:12everything centering around God,
- 11:14everything in this scene and everything
- 11:16in the world.
- 11:17Every facet of our lives, everything.
- 11:20So, at school, students,
- 11:24every subject you study centers around
- 11:30God.
- 11:32Do not view science apart from the glory
- 11:36of the triune God. You'll miss the whole
- 11:38point of science.
- 11:41Do not look at history apart from the
- 11:43glory of the triune God. You'll miss the
- 11:45whole point of history.
- 11:47Miss the whole point of science and
- 11:48history and every other subject if you
- 11:50try to view them in a godless manner
- 11:52because God is at the center of all of
- 11:54them.
- 11:57You know, work.
- 11:59Ladies and gentlemen, your jobs, you
- 12:01will not understand your work rightly as
- 12:04a lawyer, doctor, counselor, teacher,
- 12:06consultant, engineer, manager, mechanic,
- 12:09sales rep, or stay-at-home mom unless
- 12:11you understand that God is at the center
- 12:14of the universe and everything in your
- 12:16work ultimately revolves around God.
- 12:19He
- 12:20sits at the center of the universe and
- 12:22everything revolves around him.
- 12:26There he dwells in unapproachable light.
- 12:29Now,
- 12:30I'm using
- 12:31language there from 1 Timothy chapter
- 12:336:16, how God is the blessed and only
- 12:35sovereign who dwells in unapproachable
- 12:37light, whom no one has ever seen or can
- 12:40see. And this is where I want to remind
- 12:42you that we need to be careful in
- 12:44scenes like this not to get too carried
- 12:47away in these symbolic images and start
- 12:49attributing literal meaning to each of
- 12:51them.
- 12:52So, even the picture of God seated on a
- 12:54throne
- 12:56does not limit God to a certain place
- 12:58where he is located. We know, and we're
- 12:59going to talk about later, that God is
- 13:02omnipresent. He's present everywhere.
- 13:04So, these are symbolic pictures
- 13:05representing God's glory. And so, when
- 13:08you get to chapter 4:3 and you see that
- 13:10the one who sat there had the appearance
- 13:12of jasper and carnelian,
- 13:16and you realize, okay, jasper, this
- 13:18opaque jewel that was often red, but at
- 13:21other times
- 13:22green or blue or yellow or white or
- 13:25brown, and you've got carnelian, this
- 13:27fiery red stone that was popular in the
- 13:29ancient world. This isn't
- 13:31John saying God is red
- 13:34or blue or white. This is John giving us
- 13:37a picture of brilliant colors and light
- 13:40emanating from his throne. He dwells in
- 13:43unapproachable light. It's like John is
- 13:46just grasping at the leash of language
- 13:48to try to find words to express the
- 13:51glory of the God who's before him.
- 13:55He dwells in unapproachable light where
- 13:57he is surrounded by unending praise. So,
- 14:00see the heavenly entourage around God.
- 14:0424 elders. We're not
- 14:06sure exactly who these are. They may be
- 14:09symbolic of 12 tribes of Israel and the
- 14:1112 apostles as the people of God. Maybe
- 14:14they're simply angelic attendants.
- 14:17And four living creatures that on one
- 14:18hand seem to represent all of creation,
- 14:20on the other hand, seem to resemble
- 14:22cherubim and seraphim, celestial beings
- 14:25in scripture we see before God's throne.
- 14:29But no matter who they are precisely,
- 14:30the point is clear. They surround God
- 14:32with praise. Verse 8, the four living
- 14:35creatures day and night never cease to
- 14:38say, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God
- 14:41God Almighty who was and is and is to
- 14:43come."
- 14:44And whenever they sing, which is all the
- 14:46time, the 24 elders fall down and
- 14:48worship, casting crowns before the
- 14:50throne saying, "Worthy are you, our Lord
- 14:52and God, to receive glory and honor and
- 14:55power." So, think of it.
- 14:59At this moment,
- 15:01while you sit in your seat,
- 15:04there are angels and people and
- 15:07creatures. There is a heavenly host at
- 15:11this moment that is resounding to the
- 15:13praise of God.
- 15:16This is where we remember that when we
- 15:17come together for worship as the people
- 15:19of God here on Earth,
- 15:22what we do when we lift our praises to
- 15:24God is an earthly expression expression
- 15:27of a heaven heavenly reality, an earthly
- 15:30expression of a heavenly assembly. And
- 15:32when we sing, "Praise God from whom all
- 15:35blessings flow," we are joined by better
- 15:37yet, we are joining in a chorus that is
- 15:40already resounding to his praise in the
- 15:42heavens.
- 15:44And they don't sit down and take a
- 15:46break.
- 15:47They keep singing. Even as I speak,
- 15:50they're still shouting his praise.
- 15:54When you go home tonight and lay your
- 15:55head on your pillow weary from today,
- 15:58they will not be weary. They will
- 15:59continue singing and shouting his
- 16:01praise. When you wake up in the morning,
- 16:02they'll still be doing the same thing.
- 16:05So, view every facet of your life
- 16:07through this lens. God is receiving
- 16:09unending praise
- 16:11from a heavenly host at all times.
- 16:15Now, who is this God? This vision in
- 16:18Revelation 4 tells us that he is the
- 16:20judge of every man.
- 16:22All of the judgments that we're going to
- 16:24read about in the chapters to come flow
- 16:27from the throne of God. It's why chapter
- 16:294:5 says, "From throne came flashes of
- 16:33lightning and rumblings and peals of
- 16:35thunder."
- 16:37Makes you think of storms that we've had
- 16:39over past few weeks here, some that have
- 16:41woken us up in the middle of the night
- 16:43with claps of thunder and continuous
- 16:45lightning. So, imagine these kinds of
- 16:48heavenly convulsions just reverberating
- 16:51from the throne.
- 16:54Yet amidst this
- 16:56in a sense frightening portrayal of God
- 16:59as judge,
- 17:01we see that he tempers his wrath, his
- 17:03judgment with mercy. There's a rainbow
- 17:06around the throne resembling God's
- 17:08promise to show patience and mercy
- 17:11to a fallen world that's filled with
- 17:13sinners who are all, every single one,
- 17:15guilty of treason and transgression
- 17:18against him. All of us guilty of
- 17:20transgression against the one who is
- 17:22holy above all.
- 17:25Who is holy, holy, holy. He's separated
- 17:28by a sea of crystal clear glass, a
- 17:31picture of his transcendence. Above
- 17:33there is no one
- 17:36like God.
- 17:39Everything everywhere in all the
- 17:42universe, you will not find anything
- 17:44that is comparable to God. He is holy
- 17:47other.
- 17:48And he's not only holy above all, but he
- 17:50has power over all. Holy, holy, holy is
- 17:54the Lord God Almighty, one of John's
- 17:57favorite titles for God in the book of
- 17:58Revelation, the Lord God Almighty. His
- 18:02perfect purity overflowing into perfect
- 18:05power.
- 18:08The scene continues. God is infinitely
- 18:10timeless. Verse 8, he is the one who was
- 18:13and is and is to come. Verse 9, he is
- 18:15the one who lives forever and ever.
- 18:18Nothing can overpower his rule and
- 18:20nothing can outlast his reign.
- 18:23Oh, think about it, brothers and
- 18:25sisters. Our president will lead for
- 18:27four, maybe eight years, and then he
- 18:29will be done. But our God will reign
- 18:32forever and ever and ever and ever. He's
- 18:36infinitely timeless and he is infinitely
- 18:39glorious. Verse 11, "Worthy to receive
- 18:42glory and honor and power."
- 18:45Infinite glory. We'll come back to that
- 18:47in a minute. Keep going. He is supreme
- 18:50above all things. Little background
- 18:51here, Dominus et Deus Noster, a term
- 18:56that was used in the 1st century to
- 18:57address and describe the Roman emperor.
- 19:00The Roman Empire said that the emperor
- 19:03is literally the Lord and our God.
- 19:07And many Christians were
- 19:10forced in a sense to or tempted to say
- 19:13to the emperor, "You are the Lord and
- 19:15our God." So, John from an island in
- 19:18exile writes, "No, he is not."
- 19:22There is only one Lord and only one God
- 19:24who is worthy of that title, and it is
- 19:25definitively not the Roman emperor.
- 19:28No matter what Rome may try to force its
- 19:30citizens or various Christians to say,
- 19:33the Roman emperor pales in significance
- 19:35to the church's Lord and God. He is the
- 19:37one who is supreme over all things. And
- 19:39he is the sustainer of all things. Verse
- 19:4211, he created all things and by his
- 19:44will they existed and came into being.
- 19:46Nothing in all of creation exists
- 19:48outside of the sovereign sustenance of
- 19:50God.
- 19:51You have breath tonight because God has
- 19:54given you breath tonight.
- 19:56Your heart is beating at this moment
- 19:59because God is giving it rhythm. And
- 20:01were he to stop, so would you.
- 20:07He alone sustains all things.
- 20:10And he alone is sovereign over all
- 20:13things. So, the vision continues
- 20:15unbroken into chapter 5 where John says
- 20:17he saw verse 1 in the right hand of him
- 20:20who was seated on the throne a scroll
- 20:21written within and on the back sealed
- 20:24with seven seals.
- 20:26The scroll
- 20:28we find out in the chapters that follow
- 20:29contains God's foreordained plans
- 20:33for the course of history specifically
- 20:34leading up to the end of the world and
- 20:37the consummation of his kingdom. So,
- 20:39this scroll contains God's sovereign
- 20:43will for all creation and ultimate
- 20:46redemption and he holds it in his hand.
- 20:55Our sovereign God
- 20:58holds the destiny of the world in the
- 21:03palm of his hand.
- 21:10Is this good news or what?
- 21:13You listen to political campaigns and
- 21:16party conventions these next 2 weeks and
- 21:18be comforted by the fact that neither
- 21:21Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney holds the
- 21:24world in the palm of his hand.
- 21:27Watch news coming from Syria and Iran
- 21:30and Israel and India and North Korea in
- 21:32the coming days and realize that none of
- 21:34the leaders of those nations is
- 21:36ultimately sovereign over anything
- 21:38because God is sovereign over all of
- 21:40them. He charts the course of their
- 21:42countries and he holds the destiny of
- 21:44the world in his fingertips.
- 21:48Behold God the Father.
- 21:53And
- 21:55then behold God the Son. So, you get
- 21:58through chapter 4 and you think, man,
- 22:00could this scene get any more majestic?
- 22:04And it does.
- 22:08So, here's the scroll
- 22:10containing God's foreordained plans for
- 22:12the redemption and restoration of all
- 22:15creation. Plans for the ultimate
- 22:18eradication of evil
- 22:20and the defeat of death in the world.
- 22:22Plans for the final removal of sin and
- 22:25suffering and pain and persecution. This
- 22:27is the end to all world wars and
- 22:30physical diseases and natural disasters.
- 22:33This is the coming of God's kingdom to
- 22:35man, the recreation of a new heaven and
- 22:37a new earth where God's people will
- 22:38enjoy him and reign with him forever and
- 22:41ever. It's all written on the scrolls.
- 22:44So, who is able to open it?
- 22:48Who is able to bring these plans to
- 22:51pass?
- 22:53And the silence of heaven
- 22:56testifies to the sinfulness of man
- 22:58because there is no one
- 23:01who is able.
- 23:03No one who is worthy. And so, John
- 23:06begins weeping. Loudly weeping. Why?
- 23:11Think about this. Don't miss it. Why
- 23:13John be weeping?
- 23:17Because John is overwhelmed
- 23:20by the prospect of a future without all
- 23:24of these things.
- 23:27No redemption.
- 23:29No restoration.
- 23:32No eradication of evil.
- 23:37No final removal of sin and suffering
- 23:40and pain and persecution.
- 23:42And no defeat of death.
- 23:45No
- 23:46hope.
- 23:51And yet amidst John's hopeless wailing,
- 23:55one of the elders speaks up and says,
- 23:58John
- 24:00weep no more.
- 24:03Behold the lion of the tribe of Judah,
- 24:06the root of David has conquered, verse
- 24:095. So, that he can open the scroll and
- 24:12its seven seals and thus we are
- 24:14introduced to God the Son.
- 24:18He is the conquering lion.
- 24:21Prophesied in the first book of the
- 24:23Bible, Genesis 49:10, the lion of the
- 24:25tribe of Judah to whom shall be the
- 24:27obedience of all the peoples. Prophesied
- 24:29in Isaiah chapter 11 verse 1, the
- 24:31Messiah who would come from the root of
- 24:33David, there shall come forth a root a
- 24:35shoot from the stump of Jesse and a
- 24:37branch from his root shall bear fruit.
- 24:39The root of Jesse shall stand as a
- 24:40signal for all the peoples. Of him shall
- 24:43the nations inquire and his resting
- 24:44place shall be glorious. The conquering
- 24:47Messiah is on the scene.
- 24:50So, see the feel the contrast here
- 24:53between 1 minute no one being able to
- 24:56open the scroll
- 24:57and the next minute someone being able
- 24:59to open the scroll.
- 25:01Throughout history
- 25:03from the beginning of time, men have
- 25:05come and men have gone. Women have come
- 25:08and women have gone. All of them, the
- 25:10strongest of them, the noblest of them,
- 25:12the kindest of them, the greatest of
- 25:13them, they have all fallen prey to sin.
- 25:17All of them, every single man and every
- 25:20single woman, a slave to Satan. All of
- 25:23them, generation after generation,
- 25:25century after century, every single man
- 25:27and every single woman on the earth
- 25:30succumbed to death.
- 25:34But then came another man
- 25:38unlike any before.
- 25:41This man did not fall prey to sin. This
- 25:43man had power over sin. This man was not
- 25:46enslaved to Satan. This man would crush
- 25:48that ancient snake. And this man would
- 25:51not succumb to death. This man would
- 25:53defeat death. The root of David David,
- 25:56the lion of the tribe of Judah has come
- 25:58and he has conquered.
- 26:02So, how? How did he conquer?
- 26:05John rises to get a glimpse of strong
- 26:09lion and to his surprise
- 26:13he sees a slaughtered
- 26:16lamb.
- 26:18The conquering lion is the slaughtered
- 26:21lamb.
- 26:24This vision coming to the apostle who
- 26:27heard John the Baptist say of Jesus,
- 26:30look, the lamb of God who takes away the
- 26:32sin of the world. Harkening back to
- 26:35Exodus 12 where the people of God would
- 26:37take the blood of a lamb and
- 26:40put it over the doorposts of their
- 26:41houses and be spared the judgment of God
- 26:44safe under the banner of the blood of a
- 26:46lamb.
- 26:48Isaiah chapter 53 had prophesied of
- 26:51suffering servant who would be led to
- 26:53the slaughter
- 26:55for the sins of men and women. Son of
- 26:58God would be crushed according to the
- 27:00sovereign will of God. So, how does this
- 27:03lion conquer? He conquers by suffering
- 27:06as the lamb.
- 27:08He conquered
- 27:10through crucifixion.
- 27:13He was marred, despised, beaten,
- 27:16rejected, stricken, smitten, afflicted,
- 27:20wounded, chastised, oppressed, and
- 27:22pulverized in the place of sinners so
- 27:25that everyone who hides under the banner
- 27:27of his blood will be safe.
- 27:31He's the slaughtered lamb of God. It's
- 27:34what slain literally translates. He's
- 27:35slaughtered.
- 27:39Slaughtered lamb of God and yet
- 27:42he is standing.
- 27:47Slaughtered lambs don't stand.
- 27:54This lamb
- 27:55who has endured death
- 27:58has also defeated death.
- 28:01This lamb who bears the scars of death
- 28:03is sovereign over death. This is the
- 28:06greatest news in all the world. The
- 28:09slaughtered lamb of God reigns as the
- 28:12sovereign Lord of all.
- 28:16And so, this lion-like lamb, verse 7
- 28:19goes
- 28:22and says it takes the scroll from the
- 28:25right hand of him who was seated on the
- 28:27throne. Is that breathtaking audacity or
- 28:30what?
- 28:32No one in heaven or earth under the
- 28:34earth is able to take the scroll. And
- 28:36yet Jesus walks up to the throne of the
- 28:40Father surrounded by living creatures
- 28:42and elders and a host of angels and he
- 28:45takes it from the Father's hand.
- 28:49Is there any clearer picture of the
- 28:51divinity of Christ than this? His
- 28:53authority to accomplish the sovereign
- 28:54will of the Father while angels are
- 28:57praising his name.
- 29:01God does not share the spotlight with
- 29:03just anyone, you know.
- 29:06God doesn't share the spotlight with
- 29:08anyone but himself.
- 29:11This is Jesus humbled as the lamb who
- 29:14became obedient to death, even death on
- 29:17a cross. Therefore, God has exalted him
- 29:19to the highest place and given him the
- 29:21name that is above every name that at
- 29:23the name of Jesus every knee should bow
- 29:25in heaven and on earth and under the
- 29:26earth and every tongue confess that he
- 29:29is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 29:32This is Philippians 2:9-11 in action
- 29:35here.
- 29:37So, the angels
- 29:38say, we got a new song to sing.
- 29:41This time to the lamb, verse 9, worthy
- 29:44are you to take the scroll and to open
- 29:45its seals for you were slain, and by
- 29:47your blood you ransomed people for God
- 29:50from every tribe and language and people
- 29:52and nation. Oh, his worth is undisputed.
- 29:54Christ alone is worthy. Christ alone has
- 29:58the key to all of human history. Christ
- 30:01alone has the power, the authority to
- 30:03bring about the consummation of the
- 30:04kingdom of God.
- 30:06Worthy is the lamb who was slain to
- 30:08receive. You look at sevenfold perfect
- 30:10praise in verse 12. Power and wealth and
- 30:13wisdom and might and honor and glory and
- 30:16blessing. There is no one like him.
- 30:19His worth is undisputed. His work is
- 30:21unforgettable. Don't miss this. This is
- 30:24This is a glimpse into heaven, and
- 30:26Christ is risen.
- 30:28And yet he's pictured as a lamb that
- 30:31looks like it's been slaughtered.
- 30:35And the implication is clear.
- 30:38For all of eternity, we will see the
- 30:39conquering lion ruling as the
- 30:42slaughtered lamb.
- 30:45For all of eternity, brothers and
- 30:46sisters, the slaughtered lamb of God
- 30:48will be at the center of our worship.
- 30:51We will never ever ever forget the
- 30:53cross.
- 30:55We will always always always rejoice in
- 30:58the cross where he conquered as the
- 31:00lamb.
- 31:03It's what the hymn writer said when he
- 31:04wrote, "Crown him the Lord of love.
- 31:06Behold his hands and side, those wounds
- 31:09yet visible above in beauty glorified.
- 31:12No angel in the sky can fully bear that
- 31:14sight, but downward bends his burning
- 31:17eye at mysteries so bright." His work is
- 31:20unforgettable.
- 31:22And his worship is universal.
- 31:24He's
- 31:26worthy to receive praise from every
- 31:29language and tribe and nation and
- 31:31people. Jesus has died on the cross not
- 31:33for one type of people for the praise of
- 31:35every type of person on the planet, and
- 31:38he will receive the reward of his
- 31:40sufferings. A kingdom of men and women
- 31:42from all over the world who have
- 31:44experienced his salvation, who exalt his
- 31:47worth. Behold God the Son.
- 31:52And behold God the Spirit.
- 31:55In chapter 4,
- 31:56verse 5, we see again seven spirits of
- 32:00God. Same language we saw talked about
- 32:03from chapter 1 used to describe Holy
- 32:06Spirit. He is omnipresent. Language here
- 32:09recalling Zechariah 4 yet again, the
- 32:13spirit of God, the mysterious spirit of
- 32:16God who is omnipresent, who is
- 32:17omniscient. Nothing escapes his
- 32:20searching gaze in the world. He is
- 32:23omnipotent with all power to enact
- 32:26judgment and to enable salvation. He
- 32:28enables salvation.
- 32:30It is God the Spirit who is sent by God
- 32:34the Father and God the Son to carry out
- 32:37the divine mission in the world. Now,
- 32:39obviously, his portrait is not as
- 32:41prominent here in Revelation 4 and 5 as
- 32:44the Father and the Son because the
- 32:46spirit's very role is to in the Godhead
- 32:49is to exalt the Son.
- 32:52So, behold here the mystery of the
- 32:54Trinity in these two chapters. Here's
- 32:56the last book of the Bible, and we're
- 32:57seeing what we've seen throughout the
- 32:59rest of the Bible.
- 33:02On one hand, God is three persons.
- 33:06The Father is worshipped as God, the Son
- 33:08is worshipped as God, and the Spirit is
- 33:10worshipped as God here and throughout
- 33:12all of scripture. Three persons.
- 33:15And each person is fully God. The
- 33:17Father's not kind of God or part God.
- 33:19The Son's not another part of God. The
- 33:21Spirit's not a third part of God.
- 33:23They're each fully divine. They're fully
- 33:25God. And yet there is one God who is at
- 33:28the center of this scene in Revelation 4
- 33:31and 5.
- 33:32God is three persons, each person fully
- 33:34God. There is one God. And it's a
- 33:36mystery how all of these things come
- 33:38together. One person said of the
- 33:40Trinity, "Try to explain that, and you
- 33:42will lose your mind. Try to deny it, and
- 33:44you will lose your soul."
- 33:47So, see the majesty of this mystery in
- 33:51Revelation 4 and 5, and see the
- 33:52progression of praise that accompanies
- 33:54it.
- 33:56First two songs
- 33:57that we hear sung are specifically sung
- 33:59to God the Father. Next two songs we
- 34:02hear sung are specifically sung to God
- 34:04the Son. Last song we hear sung is
- 34:06specifically lifted in praise to God and
- 34:10to the lamb.
- 34:11In all of it, there's a progression of
- 34:13participants. You start with 24 elders,
- 34:15then you add four living creatures, then
- 34:17you have 24 elders and four living
- 34:18creatures together.
- 34:20And then you get to angels, many angels
- 34:24numbering myriads of myriads and
- 34:25thousands of thousands. If you like
- 34:27math, the way we understand myriads in
- 34:29the Bible, that adds up to about 100
- 34:31million angels. That's a lot. And then
- 34:33ultimately, every creature in heaven and
- 34:36on earth and under the earth and in the
- 34:37sea and all that is in them. That's
- 34:39pretty much everybody
- 34:41and everything in all the universe
- 34:44giving blessing and honor and glory to
- 34:47the mysteriously majestic God over all.
- 34:53Uh
- 34:54brother or sister, do not think for a
- 34:56second
- 34:59that one day even when you or I get to
- 35:01heaven, we are going to be able to
- 35:03comprehend God.
- 35:07Because even in our glorified state, we
- 35:10will still be finite men and women, and
- 35:12he will still be infinite God.
- 35:15Which means, follow this. We've already
- 35:17said so we're going to come back to God
- 35:18is infinitely glorious.
- 35:21Because God is infinitely glorious,
- 35:23follow this. That
- 35:26That reminds us
- 35:28that 10,000 years from now, we sang
- 35:31about it earlier, 10,000 years from now,
- 35:34because God is infinitely glorious,
- 35:3610,000 years from now, there will still
- 35:38be more glory to be explored in God.
- 35:44And 10 million
- 35:47gazillion years from now, there will
- 35:50still be more glory to be enjoyed in
- 35:54God.
- 35:56People sometimes say or at least think,
- 35:58"If heaven is perfect, won't it be
- 36:00perfectly boring?
- 36:03And it's kind of sitting on clouds and
- 36:06singing
- 36:07forever?"
- 36:08We're going to talk about how that's not
- 36:10heaven later, but
- 36:12let me assure you,
- 36:15let me assure you, eternity with this
- 36:17God will never ever ever be boring.
- 36:22Stephen Charnock put it best in his
- 36:24discourse on the eternity of God. I wish
- 36:26I'd have written this. Listen to this.
- 36:28He said,
- 36:29"After many ages, our joys will be as
- 36:32savory and satisfying as if they had
- 36:35been but that first moment tasted by our
- 36:38hungry appetites.
- 36:40When the glory of the Lord shall rise
- 36:42upon you, it shall be so far from ever
- 36:44setting that after millions of years are
- 36:47expired as numerous as the sands on the
- 36:49seashore, the sun in the light of whose
- 36:52countenance you shall live shall be as
- 36:54bright as the first appearance. He will
- 36:57be so far from ceasing to flow that he
- 36:59will flow as strong, as full as at the
- 37:02first communication of himself in glory
- 37:05to the creature. God is always vigorous
- 37:07and flourishing, a pure act of life
- 37:10sparkling new and fresh rays of life and
- 37:13light to the creature, flourishing with
- 37:15a perpetual spring and contenting the
- 37:18most capacious desire, forming your
- 37:20interest and pleasure and satisfaction
- 37:23with an infinite variety without any
- 37:25change or succession. God will have
- 37:27variety to increase your delights and
- 37:29eternity to perpetuate them. This will
- 37:32be the fruit of the enjoyment of an
- 37:34infinite and eternal God."
- 37:38Uh
- 37:40So, what's the point for us? Is the
- 37:43point of this portrait just to make us
- 37:44speechless? Because it does.
- 37:49But it
- 37:50But it's given to us for more than that.
- 37:53The point of this portrait is to make us
- 37:55speechless, yes, and
- 37:57and to transform everything about us.
- 38:01So, there are probably
- 38:03seemingly an infinite number of
- 38:04takeaways from this text. Let's
- 38:07Let's focus on four. Number one.
- 38:10The glory of God
- 38:13compels us to receive salvation.
- 38:19So, here's the deal. There are
- 38:20Christians in this room, and there are
- 38:21non-Christians in this room.
- 38:24There are men and women who are
- 38:25followers of Christ, and there are men
- 38:27and women who are not followers of
- 38:29Christ.
- 38:33And yet regardless of which category you
- 38:34might fall into,
- 38:37the point of this picture is the same.
- 38:41God holds
- 38:42the future glorification of believers in
- 38:45his hand. So,
- 38:47for all who trust in Jesus,
- 38:50for all who believe in the slaughtered
- 38:52lamb of God who reigns as the sovereign
- 38:54Lord of all,
- 38:56all who believe in him will one day be
- 38:59united with him face to face in heaven.
- 39:02God is working all things together in
- 39:04the world and in your life for your good
- 39:06and for his glory, and he will bring
- 39:08your salvation to completion.
- 39:12At the same time,
- 39:15God holds the future glorification of
- 39:17believers in his hand. He also holds the
- 39:20final damnation of unbelievers in his
- 39:23hand.
- 39:27And as we're going to see in the book of
- 39:28Revelation,
- 39:29everyone who spurns this savior will be
- 39:32condemned in their sin forever.
- 39:37So,
- 39:39to every non-Christian in the room.
- 39:43To every man, woman, student who is not
- 39:45following Jesus, I
- 39:48urge you tonight,
- 39:51in view of this vision
- 39:53in Revelation 4 and 5, I urge you to cry
- 39:57out for the mercy of Christ or collapse
- 40:01under the judgment of Christ.
- 40:06Jesus is in control of the past,
- 40:09present, and future of world history.
- 40:12And Jesus is in control of your eternal
- 40:15destiny. Every single one of us in this
- 40:18room, where you are sitting, Jesus holds
- 40:20your eternal destiny in his hand.
- 40:25And he is the conquering lion who has
- 40:26come to save. He has come to overcome
- 40:29death. He was crucified on the cross
- 40:32where he paid the price for sin before a
- 40:34holy God so that everyone who trusts in
- 40:37him to save their soul can receive, will
- 40:39receive mercy at the moment they cry out
- 40:42to him.
- 40:44At this moment,
- 40:46you cry out for the mercy of Christ.
- 40:50And by his grace through faith in him,
- 40:52you will be free from sin
- 40:56and saved forever and ever and ever. Not
- 40:59based on anything you do, but totally
- 41:01based on what the lion-like lamb has
- 41:03done on your behalf.
- 41:05So now, even now in this room,
- 41:08tonight in this moment, cry out for his
- 41:11mercy. See the sovereign grace of God
- 41:14bringing you to this place, this seat at
- 41:17this moment to see this Christ and to
- 41:19receive his mercy.
- 41:24Cry out for his mercy.
- 41:28And when you do,
- 41:32when you do, and for all who cry out for
- 41:34his mercy,
- 41:38this changes everything.
- 41:41Look at Look at Revelation 3:21. You've
- 41:43got to see this.
- 41:46Do you remember how the letters right
- 41:48before this ended?
- 41:51This, probably more than anything else
- 41:52in my study of Revelation 4 and 5 this
- 41:54week,
- 41:56blew me away.
- 41:59Jesus' last words to the
- 42:01church at Laodicea, Revelation 3:21.
- 42:04The one who conquers, so the one who
- 42:07perseveres in trust in Christ for
- 42:09salvation to the end. The one who
- 42:11conquers, I will grant him to sit with
- 42:15me on my throne.
- 42:19As I also conquered and sat down with my
- 42:24father on his throne.
- 42:28What?
- 42:30What a promise!
- 42:34This just brings Revelation 4 and 5
- 42:37right into your lap, Christian.
- 42:40Follower of Christ, he will grant you
- 42:46Huh, you
- 42:48to sit on his throne with him.
- 42:54If Revelation 4 and 5 takes our breath
- 42:57away, then
- 42:59remembering Revelation 3:21 just knocks
- 43:02you out of your chair.
- 43:05That's what chapter 5 said. Jesus has
- 43:07purchased us. He's made us a kingdom and
- 43:09priests to to our God where we shall
- 43:11reign on the earth. We shall reign reign
- 43:14with him. Now, what does that mean?
- 43:16We've talked about this just about every
- 43:17week so far because we've seen it every
- 43:19week in Revelation.
- 43:21For believers, without question, there
- 43:22is a future reign that we have in
- 43:25Christ, with Christ in a new heaven and
- 43:27a new earth. We know that's coming.
- 43:29We're going to see that spelled out,
- 43:30described as we progress through
- 43:32Revelation. But there is a sense in
- 43:35which we are reigning with Christ even
- 43:38now.
- 43:41And that's the point of the book of
- 43:42Revelation. Revelation is giving us a
- 43:45picture of what Paul means in Ephesians
- 43:472 when he says, "We're seated with
- 43:49Christ in the heavenlies." What Paul
- 43:51means in Romans chapter 8 when he says,
- 43:52"We are more than conquerors through him
- 43:54who loved us." Not, "Hey, one day you're
- 43:56going to conquer. Like it's horrible
- 43:58now, but just hang on. You're going to
- 43:59conquer one day." No, today you are more
- 44:02than conquerors through Christ who loved
- 44:04us.
- 44:05We're more than conquerors now. We're
- 44:07seated with Christ now. Are you not in
- 44:09with Christ in his life and his
- 44:11resurrection now? So to use the words of
- 44:14Graeme Goldsworthy, Revelation 1 was not
- 44:16written to minister to armchair prophets
- 44:18in some far-off age. It was written to
- 44:21encourage struggling saints in every
- 44:23age. And that's why we've got this
- 44:25scene. We don't have Revelation 4 and 5
- 44:28just to give us a glimpse of God that
- 44:29one day we're going to have in heaven.
- 44:31We've got Revelation 4 and 5 to empower
- 44:33and enable us to live life on earth.
- 44:37This is the point. So for first-century
- 44:40Christians and 21st-century Christians,
- 44:42going back to last week, these churches
- 44:44that were struggling with compromise,
- 44:45complacency, we struggle with compromise
- 44:47and complacency in our lives. Don't miss
- 44:49the point. The glory of God empowers us
- 44:52to escape temptation.
- 44:55So So we talked last week about battles
- 44:57with idolatry and immorality, with sin
- 45:00in our lives. How do we overcome sin in
- 45:02our lives? How do we overcome these
- 45:03things in our lives? We overcome sin by
- 45:05seeing God as he is.
- 45:09How do you overcome idolatry? We
- 45:10overcome idolatry by glimpsing a greater
- 45:13God.
- 45:15When you see the grandeur of God in
- 45:18Revelation 4 and 5,
- 45:20in the first century, you
- 45:23you stop bowing down and worshipping
- 45:25wooden statues and Roman emperors.
- 45:29And when you see the grandeur of God in
- 45:32Revelation 4 and 5 in the 21st century,
- 45:35you stop worshipping money and success
- 45:39and sex and acclaim in this culture.
- 45:42Because you realize what petty,
- 45:44worthless gods these are compared to
- 45:47compared to the grandeur and greatness
- 45:49of the glory of God.
- 45:52We overcome idolatry by glimpsing a
- 45:54greater God.
- 45:56Similarly, we fight immorality through
- 45:59fulfillment in our father. So when you
- 46:01experience the pleasure and delight and
- 46:03the feast that is found in the triune
- 46:05God, then you are now free from the
- 46:08pursuit of pleasure and the stuff of
- 46:10this world. You don't lust over images
- 46:13on the internet when your eyes are
- 46:15captivated with the glory of God.
- 46:19Christian, how
- 46:21how do you and I this week in our
- 46:23battles with temptation, how do we
- 46:25overcome the promised pleasures of sin?
- 46:30Here's how. By daily letting the triune
- 46:33God overcome us with the power of his
- 46:37satisfaction.
- 46:39We taste and see that he is good and we
- 46:42don't have stomachs for the stuff of
- 46:44this world because we have feasted on
- 46:47the goodness of our God. We fight
- 46:49immorality through fulfillment in our
- 46:51father. The glory of God empowers us to
- 46:53escape temptation. We refuse to
- 46:54compromise in light of the example of
- 46:56Christ. So to borrow language from
- 46:58Hebrews chapter 12 here,
- 46:59to understand Revelation chapter 5, we
- 47:02let go. We throw aside sin, hindrances
- 47:05that so easily entangle us, encumber us.
- 47:08And we fix our eyes on Jesus, author and
- 47:10perfecter of our faith. We consider him
- 47:12who endured such opposition.
- 47:15In our struggle against sin, we have not
- 47:17yet resisted to the point of shedding
- 47:19blood. So consider Jesus. Look to the
- 47:21one who conquered sin. Fix your eyes on
- 47:24the one who conquered sin, the conqueror
- 47:26who lives in you.
- 47:28We resist complacency in view of the
- 47:30excellency of Christ. How can we be
- 47:32complacent before the triune God?
- 47:37How is it possible to be apathetic,
- 47:39affectionless, self-reliant, or
- 47:42self-centered before this God?
- 47:46Keep your heart and eyes and mind fixed
- 47:50on the glory of God. The glory of God
- 47:52empowers us to escape temptation. The
- 47:54glory of God enables us to endure
- 47:55tribulation.
- 47:57As we've seen over and over again
- 47:59already in Revelation, whether it's
- 48:00brothers and sisters in the first
- 48:02century or the 21st century, walking
- 48:03through suffering and wondering why it's
- 48:05happening and when it's going to end, if
- 48:07it's ever going to end. And Revelation 4
- 48:09and 5 makes three things clear. Number
- 48:11one, God is in control.
- 48:14Things in your life and things in the
- 48:16world may seem like they're spinning out
- 48:17of control, but they are not.
- 48:19God has all things under his control.
- 48:21History is resting in his hand and he
- 48:24will bring it all together for the good
- 48:26of those who love him and have been
- 48:27called according to his purpose.
- 48:29So rest in this.
- 48:32No matter what is going on in your life
- 48:33tonight,
- 48:35your God is in control.
- 48:37And our enemy has been conquered. Jesus
- 48:40has overcome. We're not waiting for our
- 48:42enemy to be conquered. He has been
- 48:44conquered. Jesus has overcome sin. He
- 48:47has overcome death. He has defeated the
- 48:49devil. In the words of Colossians 2:15,
- 48:51he has disarmed the rulers and
- 48:53authorities. He made a public spectacle
- 48:55of them, putting them to open shame by
- 48:56triumphing over them. And you are in
- 48:59him. The conqueror lives in you. You
- 49:02live in the conqueror. Now, it may not
- 49:04feel like you're a conqueror. It may not
- 49:06look like you're a conqueror on some
- 49:08days.
- 49:10But isn't this the beauty of the cross?
- 49:14Look at the cross.
- 49:18Is that a picture of conquering?
- 49:22A brutally
- 49:24bloody, maimed
- 49:27man hanging naked on a tree.
- 49:32Is that a picture of conquering?
- 49:36Not in the eyes of the world.
- 49:40In the same way,
- 49:41it's a picture of first-century
- 49:42Christians being burned at the stake,
- 49:45a picture of conquering.
- 49:49Not in the eyes of the world,
- 49:51but the gospel turns everything upside
- 49:54down.
- 49:55For in the brutal crucifixion of Christ,
- 49:58Jesus was conquering death. And in the
- 50:00brutal murder of Christians in the first
- 50:03century, the church was advancing the
- 50:05gospel.
- 50:06So, for Christians in the 21st century
- 50:09in this room who are walking through
- 50:11pain and suffering, and it doesn't feel
- 50:14like conquering on some days, know this,
- 50:16as you share in the sufferings of
- 50:18Christ, you participate in the reign of
- 50:20Christ.
- 50:22And you know that one day suffering will
- 50:25conclude. Our suffering will one day
- 50:27conclude because the lion-like lamb has
- 50:29authority to bring God's ultimate plan
- 50:31of redemption and restoration to
- 50:33completion. Amidst your suffering,
- 50:36glimpse the glory of your God, and he
- 50:38will enable you to endure tribulation.
- 50:41Finally, the glory of God
- 50:44motivates us to accomplish mission. So,
- 50:47does
- 50:48God's sovereignty just mean we sit back
- 50:50and do nothing?
- 50:52I mean, he's got the destiny of the
- 50:55world in the palm of his hand.
- 50:57He's going to bring all these things to
- 50:58pass, so
- 51:00do we just sit passively by and float
- 51:02through the sea of God's sovereignty
- 51:04while he accomplishes his purpose in the
- 51:06world?
- 51:09Absolutely not. The Bible never ever
- 51:11ever teaches that. Because just as God
- 51:14has ordained the end, literally the end,
- 51:19God has also ordained the means to bring
- 51:22about that end.
- 51:24And that means
- 51:26by God's grace involves you and me
- 51:30fulfilling his plans and his purposes.
- 51:33So, here in this text, we know Jesus has
- 51:36ransomed
- 51:37people for God from every language and
- 51:40tribe and people and nation.
- 51:43We know that he has he has
- 51:47redeemed, ransomed. There's people from
- 51:49every tribe. We're going to get this
- 51:50next week in Revelation chapter 7.
- 51:53Gathered around the throne from every
- 51:55tribe, tongue, people, and nation. We
- 51:57know that is coming. At the same time,
- 52:00you and I, by the grace of God, have the
- 52:02privilege of being a part of the spread
- 52:04of the gospel and the kingdom of God to
- 52:06all those peoples and nations and tribes
- 52:08and languages. So, church at Brook
- 52:10Hills,
- 52:12in view of the glory of God, let's pray
- 52:16passionately.
- 52:18God's sovereignty does not negate
- 52:21prayer. God's sovereignty necessitates
- 52:24prayer. We actually ran over it in this
- 52:26text with the 24 elders,
- 52:28verse 8, were around the throne holding
- 52:31golden bowls that were full of what?
- 52:33Incense. Bowls that were filled with the
- 52:35prayers of the saints. Similar to what
- 52:36we're going to see in chapter 8, verse
- 52:383, when the seventh seal the scroll is
- 52:41opened and angel there offers the
- 52:43prayers of the saints before God. And
- 52:45this, catch this, this is what's going
- 52:47to usher in the coming of God's kingdom.
- 52:50So, realize what the Bible's teaching
- 52:52here. God is ultimately and eternally
- 52:54going to consummate his kingdom in
- 52:57response to the prayers of his people.
- 53:01This is why we pray. Matthew 6,
- 53:05Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
- 53:07Your
- 53:08what? Your kingdom come. That's what we
- 53:10prayed.
- 53:12Your kingdom come
- 53:15among all the peoples that you've
- 53:16ransomed. Lord Jesus, your kingdom come.
- 53:20May your kingdom come among Saudi Arabs,
- 53:22and may your kingdom come among Iranian
- 53:24Turks, and may your kingdom come among
- 53:26the Lohar of South Asia and the Hwayo of
- 53:29East Asia. May your kingdom come among
- 53:31the Arundo and the Baloch and all the
- 53:3411,000 people groups on the world. Your
- 53:36kingdom come in all of them. And we pray
- 53:38that every time we pray that as we pray
- 53:40that, we got prayers that are piling up
- 53:42before the altar, and one day
- 53:44consummation of his kingdom comes.
- 53:47So, pray passionately. Are you praying
- 53:49like this, brother or sister? Are you
- 53:51praying like this? Are you praying yes
- 53:53for the details in your life that we
- 53:54need to be praying for? Then are you
- 53:56praying for his kingdom to come in the
- 53:57world?
- 53:59Let's pray passionately, and let's give
- 54:02sacrificially.
- 54:03So, God has willed for you and I to be
- 54:07wealthy in this room for a reason.
- 54:10Men and women, you've got jobs, and
- 54:13students, you're getting thousands and
- 54:15thousands of dollars worth of education,
- 54:17not so that we can waste all of these
- 54:20things on personal indulgences, but so
- 54:22that we can sacrifice all of these
- 54:24things on the spread of God's gospel and
- 54:26the declaration of God's glory to the
- 54:28ends of the earth.
- 54:29See it. The sovereign God of the
- 54:31universe has willed for us to be wealthy
- 54:35for the sake of his worldwide worship.
- 54:39This is why we have resources. Psalm 67,
- 54:43so that his ways may be known on earth
- 54:45and his salvation known among all
- 54:47nations. That's why God has given
- 54:49increase. So, let's stop hoarding and
- 54:51start giving. Let's pray passionately.
- 54:54Let's give sacrificially. Let's go
- 54:56confidently to all these people peoples
- 54:59and languages and tribes and nations.
- 55:016,000 of them still unreached with the
- 55:04gospel. So, let's go. As the Lord leads,
- 55:07as the Lord leads. God is
- 55:09likely not calling every single person
- 55:11in this room to move to an unreached
- 55:12people group.
- 55:14He's calling some.
- 55:17Calls some to go to unreached peoples,
- 55:19some to stay among the reached. We see
- 55:21that in scripture. There's no
- 55:22first-class, second-class, first-tier,
- 55:25second-tier Christians. Matter of
- 55:26obedience.
- 55:28What's God calling us to do?
- 55:31So, is he calling you?
- 55:35And if he is, do not be afraid.
- 55:39Do not be afraid.
- 55:41Let's go confidently. Think about what
- 55:43this text is telling us.
- 55:47You know what? The You got 6,000 plus
- 55:49unreached people groups, and they're
- 55:50unreached for a reason. They're hard to
- 55:52reach. They're difficult to reach.
- 55:53They're dangerous to reach.
- 55:56But we go to them. We don't have to be
- 55:57afraid because nothing,
- 56:00that's what this text is telling us,
- 56:02nothing, absolutely nothing can happen
- 56:04to you or me outside of the will of a
- 56:08sovereign God who holds us in his hand.
- 56:12What have we to fear?
- 56:16Nothing to fear.
- 56:19Not only do we have nothing to fear,
- 56:21we're guaranteed success.
- 56:25Because we know that Christ has
- 56:27purchased men and women from all these
- 56:29tribes and peoples and languages and
- 56:30nations. We know that Revelation chapter
- 56:327, they're going to be around the
- 56:34throne. So, you and I can go to the
- 56:35darkest, most difficult, most dangerous
- 56:37to reach people groups on the planet,
- 56:39preach the gospel, and somebody's coming
- 56:42out.
- 56:43Somebody's going to be there.
- 56:46Let's go confidently,
- 56:49knowing that our savior is going to
- 56:52receive the reward of his sufferings.
- 56:56It's the story, whole story of the
- 56:58Moravian movement. What many have called
- 57:00the most remarkable church on mission in
- 57:02all of Christian history. During the
- 57:0318th century, approximately one out of
- 57:06every 60 60 members of the Moravian
- 57:08church was serving as a missionary in a
- 57:10cross-cultural context.
- 57:13It's one out of 60.
- 57:16Scores of Moravian brothers and sisters
- 57:18literally giving up their lives and
- 57:20leaving behind their comforts for the
- 57:21spread of the gospel around the world.
- 57:23The story's told of two particular
- 57:25Moravian men who decided to sell
- 57:26themselves into slavery in order to
- 57:29reach unreached slaves in the West
- 57:31Indies.
- 57:32How are we going to reach slaves in the
- 57:33West Indies? We become slaves, they
- 57:35said. They sold themselves into slavery.
- 57:38And as they boarded that slave ship,
- 57:41these two men were said to have cried
- 57:43out, "May the lamb that was slain
- 57:45receive the reward of his suffering."
- 57:50So, may that be the cry of the church at
- 57:52Brook Hills. Let's pray passionately.
- 57:55Let's give sacrificially. Let's go
- 57:58confidently, and let's die willingly
- 58:01with the cry on our lips, "May the lamb
- 58:03that was slain receive the reward of his
- 58:06suffering."
