The Genius Behind Year-Round Mangoes | The Story of Ramon Barba — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02Okay, in the last part of the module, I
- 0:04would like to share what I found out
- 0:06about the life and the journey of Ramon
- 0:10Barba
- 0:12ba from a person na nagtanong, nakakita
- 0:15ng isang observation.
- 0:17Bakit daw yung mga Pilipino
- 0:19laging nagsusunog ng basura sa ilalim ng
- 0:22ano ng puno ng mangga o ng kahit anong
- 0:26namumungang puno?
- 0:29Bakit daw may kasabihan o may alam yung
- 0:32matatanda na kapag ginawa mo yun, mas
- 0:35mabilis na mamumunga yung puno na iyon?
- 0:39So he was asking, "What sort of chemical
- 0:43ang present sa smoke that allows for
- 0:48um
- 0:49the tree to bear um flowers faster to
- 0:53bear more fruits. Okay?
- 0:57So alamin natin yung naging journey niya
- 1:00from that question to the answer that
- 1:02gave him the order of national
- 1:04scientist. Okay? As I mentioned before,
- 1:07his work was very significant. 'Di ba?
- 1:10Even you enjoyed this work,
- 1:13enjoy the um the result of his work.
- 1:17Nakakain ka ng mangga kahit of season,
- 1:19'di ba?
- 1:21Our economy is able to
- 1:23um enjoy
- 1:26his his research, the result of his
- 1:28research. Kasi because of this, Mango
- 1:32became an international ba international
- 1:34exfort of the country.
- 1:36Okay. So that's Ramon C barba for you.
- 1:39He's called the father
- 1:42of Philippine horticulture or of
- 1:45hiculture in the Philippines of the
- 1:47Philippines. Yung research niya ang sabi
- 1:50dito, "The most significant breakthrough
- 1:53in mango research in the country."
- 1:56Okay. So tingnan natin.
- 1:59So again nung bata siya yung question
- 2:01niya no. What kind of chemical is
- 2:03present in smoke that speeds up growth
- 2:06of mangoblossom?
- 2:08So defin definitely right from the start
- 2:11no um itong si Dr. Ramon he he's
- 2:15thinking like a scientist ' ba.
- 2:17Scientist starts with a question.
- 2:20scientist is skin ang senses kinang
- 2:23observation skills. Maganda yung
- 2:25kanilang skills, observation skills and
- 2:28they are not afraid to ask question.
- 2:31Dito makikita natin na it was a long
- 2:34time before
- 2:37Dr. Raman was able to come up with the
- 2:40with the answer to that particular
- 2:41question. So nag-aral muna siya no. So
- 2:44he started in nag-aral siya ng college
- 2:47sa UPLB University of the Philippines,
- 2:49Los. Ang course niya ay agriculture
- 2:521958.
- 2:55And then he studied master's degree in
- 2:58horticulture. When we say horticulture,
- 3:00ito yyung branch of um agriculture
- 3:03concerning about study nung sa fruit ano
- 3:07to fruit and vegetable and flower
- 3:09bearing plants. Yun yung hiculture.
- 3:12Nag-aral siya sa University of Georgia
- 3:15and then he had his PhD in University of
- 3:18Hawaii where he met a very important
- 3:21person sa buhay niya.
- 3:25Nagkaroon siya ng mentor dito si
- 3:28Professor A Carl Leopold. We can say
- 3:31that
- 3:32um in some way ba in a big way it spark
- 3:36his ano ulit his
- 3:39question when he was young.
- 3:41Kasi itong si Professor Leopold ano pala
- 3:44siya he had he had a book about
- 3:48ayon yung plant growth regulator.
- 3:50Researcher siya about that particular
- 3:52topic.
- 3:53ba Ramon was interested in knowing
- 3:57what's what's in a smoke that regulates
- 3:59a plant growth or the bearing of
- 4:02a flower of fruit of a mango tree.
- 4:07after his study, after his PhD,
- 4:11o nakuha siyang assistant professor in
- 4:13New PLP kung saan siya nag-college.
- 4:16Okay.
- 4:19Before he before he went home from the
- 4:21United States, bumili muna siya nung
- 4:23ethel. Ether is a chemical
- 4:27na sikat or effective na
- 4:32flan growth regulator. So dinala niya
- 4:34yun sa Pilipinas because he was
- 4:35interested in doing a study about
- 4:38Etherel.
- 4:40He even proposed na suportahan siya or
- 4:43he he was proposing a study sa UPLB
- 4:46Freel but he was rejected kasi may isa
- 4:49ng isa ng individual na gumagawa ng same
- 4:54study about um plant growth regulator.
- 4:58Okay.
- 5:00Studying other chemicals. So he was
- 5:03rejected. He even he even asked that
- 5:06person kung pwede silang
- 5:07mag-collaborate. Unfortunately,
- 5:10nag-decline yyung tao na iyon, yung
- 5:12naunang researcher.
- 5:15Fortunately, um, he was able to he found
- 5:18another chance nung naging consultant
- 5:21siya sa isang mango farm
- 5:24in Bulacan. Okay.
- 5:27Gusto kasi nilang mapadami yung
- 5:29production ng mango sa farm na yon. So,
- 5:31they consulted Dr. Ramon.
- 5:36So during um ang nangyayari ba he was an
- 5:40assistant professor in UFLP so weekdays
- 5:44and then during Saturday susunduin siya
- 5:45ng driver nung family owner owner nung
- 5:49farm para can work on the farm during
- 5:52Saturdays ' ba
- 5:55medyo katagal-tagal na nagtanong si Dr.
- 5:59Ramon if pwede siyang mag-conduct ng
- 6:01study on the mango trees. So pumayag
- 6:04naman yung mga may-ari. Yun nga lang daw
- 6:07ay gawin niya tuwing Sunday kung saan
- 6:08wala siyang work on the farm.
- 6:12So naghanap siya ng mga chemicals na
- 6:14pwedeng spray doun sa mga mango trees '
- 6:16ba. Isa yung ethel na binili niya sa US.
- 6:19And then bumili din siya ng
- 6:22um
- 6:24yung potassium nitrate nga ba yung yung
- 6:26sa litre.
- 6:28Sabi niya bumili lang daw siya sa ano sa
- 6:30Mercury Drug nung isang kilo non.
- 6:36So during that time 50 centavos daw 50
- 6:38cent a kilo from Mercury Drug.
- 6:42Okay? Ginagamit kasi yun for um pangcure
- 6:46ba food preservative. Pwede siyang
- 6:47gamitin as food preservative sa mga
- 6:50tocino, sa mga ham. So nag-spray siya sa
- 6:53mga branches ng mga puno.
- 6:56Tipid-tipid siya kasi isang litro lang
- 6:58yung binili niya na na
- 7:00sa litre o na potassium nitrate. And
- 7:03then after 2 weeks, na-observe niya na
- 7:07nag-flower agad, namung agad ng o
- 7:10bumukadkat agad yung flowers nung mango
- 7:133. And sinabi niya 'yun sa mga owner. So
- 7:16natuwa 'yung mga owner. Pinayagan siya
- 7:18ngayon na mas malawak 'yung mas
- 7:21madamingung puno 'yung sprayan niya ng
- 7:23potassium nitrate. Kasi nakita niya na
- 7:25out of the chemicals na ini-spray niya
- 7:28sa mga mango 3, nakakita siya ng best
- 7:30result. Mas maraming flowers yung mga
- 7:32puno na na-sprayan nung salitre o ng
- 7:34potassium nitrate.
- 7:36So nag-spray siya on 100
- 7:39and naging consistent yung result. Even
- 7:41the UPLB ay sinuportahan iyung white
- 7:44scale application nung um sa literate
- 7:49finally
- 7:51sinuportahan iyung research niya. Okay?
- 7:54So again that's that's a success story.
- 7:57It was proven na effective
- 8:00flant growth regulator o yung ano yung
- 8:04potassium nitrate such that kaya ng
- 8:06mamunga o mamulaklak ng ating mga mango
- 8:08tree all year round.
- 8:11So because of his significant
- 8:12contribution he was awarded many
- 8:16awards ba
- 8:19o actually before before that before the
- 8:21awards may meron pang nagtank na kawin
- 8:25yung ano niya yung kanyang yung kanyang
- 8:27patent kumbaga inuunahan siyang
- 8:30inuunahan siyang angkinin yung idea na
- 8:33effective 'yung potassium nitrate na
- 8:36pampabukadkad ng bulaklak ng Mango 3.
- 8:41Fortunately, nanalo siya don sa patent
- 8:44war kasi mayro'on siyang ebidensya.
- 8:46'Yung ebidensya niya ay 'yung research n
- 8:48siya 'yung naon na nakaisip non'n. So he
- 8:49was able to protect the intellectual
- 8:51property.
- 8:53Katulong pa nga pala si Senator Jose
- 8:55Jokno.
- 8:58So pero hindi niya pinurso yung patent.
- 9:02Kumbaga kasi pag may patent
- 9:05kailangan bayaran mo siya kapag
- 9:07gagamitin mo yung potassium nitrate.
- 9:09Okay? Because he wasn't interested in
- 9:11making money. Sabi niya he want to help
- 9:14local farmers
- 9:17na may mga ano na to make a living dun
- 9:20sa mga mango trees.
- 9:22Okay? Because of his discovery ng he was
- 9:25awarded several several awards. Sunding
- 9:28young men 1974
- 9:30Rizel Propatria Presidential Award 1980
- 9:37Sharka DLI Achievement Award in
- 9:39Agricultural Development and then
- 9:40finally during 2014 he was recognized as
- 9:45a national artist by President
- 9:47Noayakino.
- 9:50Okay.
- 9:52So right now he's around 80 years old.
- 9:56So siya ay nakatira na sa Losibisita
- 10:02bumibisita siya minsan sa eskwelahan
- 10:05visiting professor. And then um he also
- 10:08visit Institute of Plant Breeding
- 10:12okay kung saan tumutulong din siya.
- 10:14Mayro'on siyang proteg.
- 10:17Ito si Lilian Patenya. Kilala
- 10:2030 years na. More than 30 years na 'yung
- 10:22relationship nilang dalawa as um kumbaga
- 10:26ay
- 10:28siya yung siya yung nag-train kay Lilan
- 10:31kay Lilian Patenya. Also a renowned um
- 10:33scientist.
- 10:35Okay.
- 10:37So sabi niya ganito daw mag-isip si
- 10:39ganito daw yung philosophy ni Dr. Ramont
- 10:42in terms of working. Huwag kang kukuha
- 10:45ng pay na hindi commensorate sa job mo
- 10:47pero hindi ka gagawa ng pipit
- 10:50pipitsuging trabaho.
- 10:52Okay? So Dr. Ramon Barba talaga is an
- 10:54example of hard work din no? Saka I want
- 10:58to do excellent job. ayaw niyang
- 11:00gumagawa ng kumbaga mema em lang na
- 11:04trabaho.
- 11:06Sabi niya
- 11:08umm
- 11:09always parang always do your best in
- 11:11your job
- 11:13and sometimes not all people can give
- 11:16you a good pay dun sa sa
- 11:20trabaho mo. Sometimes you have to work
- 11:22for free. But all the same you have to
- 11:25do a good job. You have to do an
- 11:26excellent job.
- 11:29Okay. Ako personally, I'm happy after
- 11:31reading about this article. I I feel I
- 11:35feel satisfied that I know him as a
- 11:37person
- 11:40and I want to I want to read more about
- 11:42other national scientists honestly and
- 11:46I'm giving you the chance in your
- 11:48activity. So you read about national
- 11:51scientist or up and coming scientist na
- 11:54meron tayo sa Pinas and you find a way
- 11:58to communicate ano yung naging
- 12:01artistically ano yung mga naging
- 12:03contribution nila in science and
- 12:05technology and in our country. Okay,
- 12:09that would be all. I will see you next
- 12:11week. a
