- 0:00What an amazing thought
- 0:04that God wants to speak into your path.
- 0:10And he wants to speak into your path
- 0:12just to make sure we're all on the same
- 0:13page today in a way that would bring you
- 0:16the fullest
- 0:19life.
- 0:21So he's not trying to cramp your style.
- 0:25He's trying to lead you
- 0:28to the fullest
- 0:30life.
- 0:33He wants to disciple us.
- 0:36A word that sort of slipped out the side
- 0:38door of the church maybe a little while
- 0:40back.
- 0:42He wants to teach us, show us. The word
- 0:44disciple, he is the word pupil. He wants
- 0:46to be our leader and he's inviting us to
- 0:51follow him. He's not inviting us to show
- 0:53up at gatherings at church. Although I
- 0:55love today,
- 0:57he's inviting us to follow him. To
- 1:01follow his example, his footsteps, his
- 1:03teaching, his ways, his thoughts, his
- 1:07lifestyle, his destination, his
- 1:09priorities, his values. He's saying,
- 1:11"Come follow me because I am the way."
- 1:15Amen. I am the truth and I am the life.
- 1:20>> I'm the way to the father. I'm the way
- 1:23to what you want and what you need and
- 1:25what you were created for and what you
- 1:27long for and what you're looking for.
- 1:30I'm the way and I actually am the way
- 1:36now in our world. That's not the only
- 1:40opportunity that's out there. A few
- 1:43weeks ago, when we introduced the large
- 1:45Stanley uh sorry, we'll edit that out.
- 1:48the large uh water container.
- 1:52I I said that I had asked chat GPT this
- 1:57question.
- 1:58How does the algorithm control my life?
- 2:03Therefore, we we wouldn't have to have a
- 2:05guy standing up here or or a lady up
- 2:07here, a person up here saying, "Let me
- 2:09tell you about how the algorithm is
- 2:11trying to control your life. Let's just
- 2:13ask the machine."
- 2:16So chat GPT quickly answered within a
- 2:20nancond
- 2:21and said algorithms control your daily
- 2:24life by acting as invisible digital
- 2:26curators that shape your habits,
- 2:31curate the information you see and make
- 2:34automated decisions about your future.
- 2:38They influence what you buy, what you
- 2:40watch, how you work, and the
- 2:42opportunities you receive. They
- 2:45manipulate your daily experiences
- 2:47through several core mechanisms
- 2:50and then I highlighted a few of those.
- 2:53Number one, by curating your reality,
- 2:56algorithms limit and personalize the
- 3:00content you consume,
- 3:03building customized echo chambers that
- 3:07shape your personal philosophy and
- 3:10worldview.
- 3:12By repeatedly showing you certain
- 3:14perspectives,
- 3:16they can exploit the illusionary truth
- 3:19effect, making you desensitized
- 3:22to or more accepting
- 3:25of extreme ideas.
- 3:28The second way that chat GPT said the
- 3:32algorithm is trying to control my life
- 3:34is by capturing my attention.
- 3:37To maximize ad revenue, platforms are
- 3:40designed to be addictive.
- 3:43Algorithms learn from your unconscious
- 3:46behavior,
- 3:47tracking exactly how long you linger on
- 3:50a post,
- 3:52when you swipe away, and what time you
- 3:56scroll
- 3:58to feed you a continuous loop of
- 4:01engaging,
- 4:03relevant
- 4:05content.
- 4:10In other words, the algorithm
- 4:14wants to disciple us.
- 4:18It wants to be our leader. It wants us
- 4:20to follow it. It wants us to become the
- 4:23pupil of its design. And what is it
- 4:26doing? Well, it's just absolutely
- 4:29staring us down every second of the day.
- 4:32And it knows ultimately and this is the
- 4:34thing that we have to come to grips
- 4:36with. The algorithm
- 4:39knows what we like
- 4:42and what we want.
- 4:45And so it feeds us us and then pushes us
- 4:50further into us
- 4:54in an attempt to convince us that that
- 4:56is the way and that is the truth
- 5:01and that is the life and that is the way
- 5:05to what we are looking for. Now if
- 5:09you're not on social media,
- 5:11congratulations. That's awesome.
- 5:14But you're still in the algorithm.
- 5:18If you never seen Netflix, well,
- 5:20congratulations. You're still in the
- 5:21algorithm.
- 5:24Your television knows so much more about
- 5:26you than you think. You turn it on and
- 5:28turn it off, but you're not really sure
- 5:30when it goes on and when it goes off.
- 5:33Everything we do is being monitored.
- 5:36Your phone is listening to you.
- 5:39You're like, "No, it's not." Well, why
- 5:40then after you were talking about
- 5:44canoes with your friend
- 5:47did REI send you a coupon
- 5:51in the email stream for a canoe and you
- 5:56went, "Wow, that's weird.
- 5:58They're having canoes on sale at REI
- 6:00right now." Blue ones like we were
- 6:04talking about the blue one.
- 6:07So the world around us
- 6:10is attempting
- 6:13to lead us
- 6:15and that's why we're in this collection
- 6:18over the summer called recommended for
- 6:21you. The same as you would see as you
- 6:24end your show on the platform that
- 6:26you're streaming on. Most likely
- 6:28somewhere in the next little bit of
- 6:30time, something's going to come up and
- 6:31say you might like or we're recommending
- 6:35for you or because you watch this, we
- 6:37think you might want to watch this. Even
- 6:40on an airplane delta, if you scan the
- 6:42thing long enough on the little monitor
- 6:45on the seatback, it'll start telling you
- 6:47what it wants you to watch.
- 6:50And so God is saying today, I would like
- 6:53to recommend to you the way to the
- 6:57fullest possible life. Amen. Jesus said
- 7:01it this way in Matthew chapter 5. That's
- 7:03where we were last week in the talk
- 7:05about curating a life or actually having
- 7:08a relationship with God that is real and
- 7:11authentic.
- 7:12And in Matthew chapter 5, six different
- 7:15times, Jesus is helping us understand
- 7:18how the law in the Old Testament is now
- 7:21transferred into a lifestyle in the New
- 7:24Testament. And this is what he says six
- 7:26different ways in Matthew chapter 5. He
- 7:28says, "You've heard it said,
- 7:31but I say to you,
- 7:33example, you've heard it say that if you
- 7:36kill someone, then you murdered them.
- 7:38But I say to you, if you harbor hatred
- 7:42in your heart towards someone, it's just
- 7:44the same.
- 7:46And he just goes through this chapter.
- 7:49You've heard it said, but I say to you,
- 7:52and that's what he's really wanting to
- 7:53do in this collection. You've heard it
- 7:55said out there in the world. But I say
- 7:58to you, and today, I don't know how this
- 8:01is going to go. The talk um is not the
- 8:04longest talk we're probably going to
- 8:05have in the collection. And it might end
- 8:08up being the least watched talk in the
- 8:11history of our church
- 8:14because today what Jesus is saying, what
- 8:17he's recommending for you,
- 8:20are you ready? Can I get an amen?
- 8:23>> No, not yet. What he's recommending for
- 8:26you
- 8:29is that it's not about you.
- 8:38The algorithm is not going to do that.
- 8:41The algorithm is going to put you center
- 8:43stage.
- 8:44It is going to put you in the epicenter
- 8:47of the orbit of life.
- 8:51But God is recommending something
- 8:53different today to lead us to life. And
- 8:57as we're going to see as this message
- 8:59unfolds, it's the unexpected path to the
- 9:03fullest and freest version of you.
- 9:07And it begins with this big idea that
- 9:09it's not about you. Now, just bear with
- 9:12me just for a moment, okay? A, I'm
- 9:14coming from another generation. I get
- 9:16that. I've traveled over several
- 9:18iterations of American thinking by now,
- 9:21and I understand the one that we're
- 9:23currently living in.
- 9:26But what the algorithm wants to say,
- 9:28let's just keep blaming it on the
- 9:30algorithm for a moment, is that it's all
- 9:32about your your fullness. Your your
- 9:35freest version of you is about
- 9:36self-help.
- 9:38It's about self-care.
- 9:40It's about self-improvement.
- 9:43It's about selfactualization.
- 9:45In fact, you used to walk into a large
- 9:48bookstore when we had really large
- 9:49bookstores and invariably you would go
- 9:52to the Christian living section and you
- 9:55can do that here in Atlanta and the
- 9:57Christian living section is there and
- 9:59it's robust. It's, you know, this big.
- 10:02But then when you turn the corner to the
- 10:03self fill-in-theblank section, you're in
- 10:07a department store now.
- 10:09Because people didn't really come to
- 10:11this bookstore looking to be discipled
- 10:14by Jesus. They came there looking for a
- 10:16way to improve their self.
- 10:20And so
- 10:24when Jesus says, "I'm recommending to
- 10:26you that it's not about you." That is
- 10:28quite a different
- 10:30direction of the wind. Now, let me say
- 10:33this and let me just say it and
- 10:36hopefully it'll
- 10:38be seared into our thinking today as we
- 10:40work through this journey.
- 10:44making sure that we find the healing
- 10:47that is available to us in Christ
- 10:51and the rest that being united with him
- 10:55brings
- 10:56is essential.
- 10:59Let me say that one more time. Making
- 11:01sure that we find the healing that is
- 11:04available to us in Christ and the rest
- 11:07that being united with him brings is
- 11:10essential. We're not throwing that out
- 11:13the window today. We're just saying that
- 11:17the pathway to fullness and freedom
- 11:20might surprise you.
- 11:23You've heard it said that you must first
- 11:25take care of yourself.
- 11:28Now, you might actually say that out
- 11:31loud with words. Hey, my first goal is
- 11:33take care of me. Or you might just be
- 11:35more like me and you just lived it out.
- 11:38You didn't really articulate it.
- 11:41What does that look like? It looks like
- 11:43we're waking up and we're going, uh, how
- 11:45do I feel?
- 11:47Uh, what do I need?
- 11:50What do I think?
- 11:52What do I want?
- 11:54What are my options?
- 11:57And all of a sudden, before we know it,
- 11:59we are in a loop of self. But Jesus is
- 12:04saying, you've heard it said, it's all
- 12:07about you. But I say to you, it's not
- 12:12about you. When we had the government
- 12:15shutdown a few months ago, um it was
- 12:18terrible to travel. Anybody out there in
- 12:20the jungle of 4hour TSA lines, it was
- 12:23nuts. Uh I had a flight had to catch.
- 12:26Things were tight. Wasn't going to work.
- 12:28But I knew someone. And the someone
- 12:30said, "I I know a way." And they knew a
- 12:33way. There's a way where where it looks
- 12:36like there is no way there is a way.
- 12:39Come to find out the person says meet me
- 12:42at the exit of the terminal where you
- 12:46leave the terminal not where you come
- 12:47in. So all the people and thousands and
- 12:49thousands of people are going into the
- 12:52place where you go in and everybody's
- 12:53saying if if you're going to get this
- 12:55flight you got to go in that way and
- 12:56this person said no go around to where
- 12:58the exit is and there's no no people
- 13:00coming out of the exit. Not one single
- 13:01person. My friend will meet you there.
- 13:02And they did. And what happened for the
- 13:04next 15 minutes was absolutely
- 13:06mind-boggling to me. I have flown
- 13:09millions and millions and millions and
- 13:10millions of miles uh in my lifetime. I
- 13:14had no idea. We just went indoors and up
- 13:17elevators and this person had the magic
- 13:20badge. And every time they swiped a
- 13:21thing, a light change, a door open, a
- 13:24thing happened. There was a a TSA
- 13:26checkpoint that I don't know who goes to
- 13:28it, but there weren't anybody at it that
- 13:30day. And we just kept doing this. We
- 13:32went upstairs, downstairs, through
- 13:34double doors. We came out in baggage
- 13:36claim. I mean, like not the one where
- 13:37you get your bag, like the one down
- 13:38underneath in the belly of the airport
- 13:41where where things are happening. We're
- 13:43standing there like, "Oh, wow. Okay,
- 13:44this is great. Fantastic. Where are we?
- 13:46And how are we going to get where we're
- 13:47going? Just keep following me. Keep
- 13:49following me. Swipe, swipe, swipe,
- 13:50swipe, swipe." All of a sudden, the door
- 13:52opens and I'm standing at the gate. I'm
- 13:55skating my phone getting on a plane.
- 13:59I know if you were in that line, you're
- 14:02like,
- 14:04I know.
- 14:08But what I learned that day is what God
- 14:12is wanting to set in front of us today.
- 14:14That sometimes the way to where we want
- 14:16to go is an unexpected way.
- 14:21And it may look like everybody is going
- 14:24in this way to get where you want to go.
- 14:27And God says,"I know, but there's
- 14:30another way.
- 14:32Meet me at the exit
- 14:34and I'll show you the way." This is what
- 14:37he's saying to us today. This is not
- 14:39new, by the way. Paul is writing to
- 14:41Timothy at the very end of his life. And
- 14:44he's giving Tim Timothy marching orders
- 14:47for how to lead the people forward in
- 14:50this newfound church world. And he says
- 14:54to him in chapter 3:1, "But mark this.
- 14:57There will be terrible times in the last
- 14:59days."
- 15:01Now, a just footnote, that was 2,000
- 15:04plus years ago when Paul was helping
- 15:08Timothy understand what it was going to
- 15:09look like in the last days.
- 15:12People, here's the description. People
- 15:14will be lovers
- 15:17of themselves.
- 15:20Wow, what a news flash.
- 15:23No phones, no internet, no algorithm,
- 15:27just hardwired from the fall in the
- 15:30garden to put ourselves in the center of
- 15:34our existence and to think how do I
- 15:37feel? What do I need? What do I think?
- 15:42What do I want? What are my options?
- 15:46He said they'll be lovers of money,
- 15:49boastful,
- 15:51proud, abusive, disobedient to their
- 15:54parents. Let's just say it again, mom
- 15:57and dad. They'll be disobedient to their
- 15:59parents.
- 16:01They'll be ungrateful,
- 16:03unholy,
- 16:05without love, unforgiving, slanderous,
- 16:08without self-control, brutal, not lovers
- 16:12of the good. They will be treacherous,
- 16:14rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure
- 16:18rather than lovers of God.
- 16:23And here's the worst part. If that's not
- 16:25bad enough, they'll have a form of
- 16:27godliness,
- 16:31but they'll deny its power.
- 16:34Have nothing to do
- 16:37with such people in the last days.
- 16:42Notice that people will be lovers
- 16:48of self,
- 16:51thinking that that's the way to where
- 16:54they want to go. They'll have a form of
- 16:57godliness. In other words, they'll look
- 17:01right, but they won't have the power
- 17:05of of God.
- 17:08And we're going to see why in just a
- 17:10moment. So, three things about it not
- 17:13being about you. Are we having a good
- 17:15time so far?
- 17:16>> Awesome. Number one, God wants to
- 17:19encourage you today to embrace that you
- 17:22are dearly loved and praised by God.
- 17:26So, this is not a hey, sit down and shut
- 17:30up because nobody cares about you
- 17:31message.
- 17:33This message is radically freeing
- 17:36because this message is telling us what
- 17:39we really really want to hear and that
- 17:43is that we are dearly loved and prized
- 17:45by God.
- 17:48So we're not going to get into that as a
- 17:50whole talk today. Just go back and
- 17:51listen to a hundred of the messages from
- 17:54Passion City Church. But let me just
- 17:56highlight a few thoughts. You and I are
- 17:59existing in a world that desired you and
- 18:02invited you. And when I say world, I'm
- 18:04not talking about just like a mechanism
- 18:06of creation. I'm talking about the God
- 18:08of creation desired you and invited you
- 18:11into this world. You were not here by
- 18:13accident or happen stance. You were not
- 18:15here by the decision of your mom and dad
- 18:17or people who weren't necessarily even
- 18:19in a relationship wanting to have
- 18:21someone like you join the situation. You
- 18:24are not here by accident. You have been
- 18:27invited into this story
- 18:30>> and you were desired to be in the story.
- 18:34Put that in the self-help section.
- 18:39>> Second big idea is you're existing in a
- 18:42cocoon of unconditional love.
- 18:47Even if you do not have a faith in
- 18:49Christ, you're not even sure if you
- 18:51believe in God, you are still existing
- 18:54right now. Maybe even you're thinking
- 18:57you're against God. Well, guess what?
- 18:59God's not against you.
- 19:02Oh, well, I don't believe in God. Well,
- 19:04God believes in you.
- 19:06I don't know if there is a God. Well,
- 19:08the God who created you certainly knows
- 19:10there is a you.
- 19:13And you're existing right now in a
- 19:16cocoon of his unconditional love. You
- 19:19can't earn it. You can't buy it. You
- 19:23cannot achieve it.
- 19:26You're in a cocoon right now of
- 19:29unconditional love. You say, "Well, you
- 19:31hadn't met my dad." Well, no, I haven't
- 19:33met your dad, but I have met your
- 19:34heavenly father.
- 19:36>> Well, you you don't know about my ex.
- 19:38Well, I know I don't know about your ex,
- 19:39but I do know about the one who gave his
- 19:42life on a cross for you.
- 19:45Yeah, you should have grown up in my
- 19:47house when they cocoons of unconditional
- 19:51love in my house. I know. Well, that's
- 19:54why we're here today to consider what a
- 19:57miracle it is to be in his house.
- 20:03You're existing third big idea
- 20:06in a position. This is if you're a
- 20:08believer in Christ
- 20:10of new life in Christ.
- 20:14The old you that story is ending and the
- 20:18brand new you story is underway.
- 20:22Fourth big idea, you're existing in an
- 20:25economy of abundance. Wow.
- 20:29No shortages in this economy we're in.
- 20:33Number five, you're existing in a
- 20:35relationship of unlimited power. In
- 20:39other words, the hand that you hold is
- 20:40the hand that holds the entire world.
- 20:44The spirit that is in you is the same
- 20:46spirit that raised Christ from the dead.
- 20:50The sixth big idea is you're existing,
- 20:54walking with God and holding this word
- 20:56in your hands and in your heart with
- 20:59superior knowledge, destiny, and
- 21:03purpose.
- 21:05In other words, when you're rolling in
- 21:06to your neighborhood or your place of
- 21:08work or wherever you work out and you
- 21:10know God and you know God's word, you're
- 21:12walking in with superior knowledge. I
- 21:15know how the whole story unfolds. I know
- 21:18exactly how it ends. I know everything
- 21:21is coming together in God's plan. And
- 21:24he's showing me what the plan is.
- 21:27I know him. I know his ways. I know his
- 21:30thoughts. I know his kingdom.
- 21:34And I have destiny on my life. And I
- 21:39have purpose on my life. It is amazing
- 21:41how down we can get on ourselves,
- 21:45how trapped we can get in our own heads,
- 21:49how masterfully we manage to not get out
- 21:52of our own way.
- 21:55And how stunningly we can live like
- 21:58poppers when we are written into the
- 22:00will of the king of kings.
- 22:03>> Amen.
- 22:07how quickly we can abandon the fullness
- 22:10orbit, the one that orbits around him,
- 22:15and we can migrate to the full less
- 22:20orbit,
- 22:22the one that
- 22:24orbits around
- 22:26us.
- 22:29That's the first thing God wants you to
- 22:31know today.
- 22:33Amen.
- 22:34>> Amen. The second thing that God wants us
- 22:36to see today is that once you come to
- 22:38terms with how valuable you are, forget
- 22:41about self.
- 22:45Sounds like a paradox, doesn't it? Well,
- 22:48once you're fully on board with just how
- 22:52blessed and valuable and loved and
- 22:56prized you are, just forget about self
- 23:00and move on in life. Paul wrote it a
- 23:04different way in Philippians when he
- 23:06said, "Do nothing from selfish
- 23:09selfish
- 23:12um ambition
- 23:16or conceit,
- 23:18but in humility, count others more
- 23:20significant or more important than
- 23:23yourself." Now, now remember, he's he's
- 23:25telling these churches who they are, how
- 23:28rich they are, how blessed they are, how
- 23:31new they are,
- 23:34how much their lives have changed in
- 23:37Christ. And then as soon as he's getting
- 23:40that across to them, he says, "Oh, and
- 23:42by the way, let's forget about self.
- 23:46Don't do anything out of self. Don't do
- 23:49anything motivated by self. Don't do
- 23:51anything that's led by how do I feel?
- 23:54What do I need? What do I think? What do
- 23:56I want? What are my options? No, don't
- 23:58do that. Consider in humility other
- 24:01people more important than yourselves.
- 24:03Now, this talk is so challenging to me
- 24:05personally and I I would imagine
- 24:07challenging to anybody who's really
- 24:09wanting to follow God today. And and I
- 24:12kept thinking, what is a good example?
- 24:13What's a good example? I need a good
- 24:15example. You can't just preach the
- 24:16truth. You have to have a good story.
- 24:18You have to have a good example. have to
- 24:19have a aical takeaway. And I thought,
- 24:21okay, what is the example? What is the
- 24:23example? What is the example? And then I
- 24:24thought, oh, I got it. The example is
- 24:26sitting right there.
- 24:32My wife is the example.
- 24:36She's not perfect,
- 24:38but imagine living with me for couple
- 24:41decades.
- 24:43It's perfecting for sure.
- 24:47And when I thought about the person who
- 24:49does nothing from selfish ambition
- 24:53or conceit, I thought, hm,
- 24:57she's the example.
- 25:00I've watched her
- 25:03for 40 plus years
- 25:08just constantly think
- 25:11about someone else, constantly serve
- 25:14someone else.
- 25:16stand in the background, stand in the
- 25:18shadow, and make a way
- 25:22for someone else. That probably could be
- 25:25said for every mom that's in this room
- 25:26right now, you're the example of this
- 25:28right here. And so many of the dads that
- 25:31are in this room right now, you're the
- 25:32example of this.
- 25:35Time after time after time, you said,
- 25:36"Well, if it was up to me, just simply
- 25:38going, uh, how do I feel? What do I
- 25:40need? What do I think? What do I want?
- 25:42What are my options?" I would have done
- 25:43A, B, C, DED, E, F, and G. But I got
- 25:46these two kids that I'm committed to.
- 25:48And I'm going to do what's best for them
- 25:52right now. And it's not really what I
- 25:54want to do necessarily, but it's what
- 25:56I'm going to do because
- 25:59I don't want to lead them out of selfish
- 26:02ambition or conceit, but in humility, I
- 26:05want to consider them more important
- 26:06than me.
- 26:08And moms have done that not a hundred
- 26:10times, not a thousand times, tens of
- 26:13thousands of times.
- 26:16And that's the picture that God is
- 26:19wanting to get across to us today.
- 26:24So if the world is saying, put yourself
- 26:27at the center, what is Jesus saying?
- 26:29Well, Jesus is saying, you've heard it
- 26:32said, but I say to you, and this is what
- 26:34Jesus says to us. This is the core text
- 26:36today. In Matthew 16, then Jesus said to
- 26:40his pupils,
- 26:44to his disciples,
- 26:47"Whoever wants to be my disciple must
- 26:50deny themselves their self
- 26:54and take up their cross and follow me."
- 26:57So, not only did Jesus say, "Hey, if you
- 26:59if you want to come on the way that is
- 27:02the the the way and the life and the
- 27:06truth, if you want to come on that way,
- 27:09then take care of yourself first." No,
- 27:11he said, "If you want to come on that
- 27:12way, then deny yourself
- 27:17because self is going to want the easy
- 27:19way. Self is going to want the me way.
- 27:21Self is going to want the it's all about
- 27:24my thoughts way. But you're going to
- 27:26have to deny that. And I'm going to show
- 27:28you how to do it. I'm going to show you
- 27:31what that
- 27:33looks like.
- 27:36Whoever wants to be my disciple
- 27:40must deny
- 27:42themselves. They must
- 27:46embrace this idea that it's not about
- 27:50me.
- 27:52It's the unexpected way. I know every
- 27:54other line is going, "No, here's the
- 27:56way. Here's the way. Here's the way.
- 27:58Here's the way." And he's saying, "No,
- 27:59there's an unexpected way." And the
- 28:01unexpected way is to embrace the idea
- 28:03that it's not about you. A friend of
- 28:05mine was talking about America 250. And
- 28:09in a beautiful tribute to our nation and
- 28:12a prophetic encouragement for our future
- 28:14said, "Real freedom is not the liberty
- 28:17to do what we like, but the power to
- 28:21become what we ought."
- 28:24And that's what God is offering to you
- 28:27and me today. The third idea that he's
- 28:30wanting to get across to us today, and
- 28:32we'll close with this,
- 28:35is that you and I have the opportunity
- 28:36today to embrace our role in a greater
- 28:39story.
- 28:41>> To embrace our role in a kingdom story,
- 28:45to understand that it isn't about me,
- 28:48but I'm a part of something great and I
- 28:52have a role
- 28:54to play.
- 28:55It's about the we of the kingdom and the
- 28:59we of the common good.
- 29:02The we of the kingdom of God and the we
- 29:04of the common good of all people. I've
- 29:07been reading the Constitution last uh
- 29:10week or so, the Declaration of
- 29:13Independence, the
- 29:15various articles and amendments, and I
- 29:18couldn't get over the the first few
- 29:21lines of the Constitution.
- 29:25Every everyone knows the first phrase,
- 29:29we
- 29:31the people
- 29:33of the United States
- 29:36in search of a more perfect
- 29:40union.
- 29:42You would think in a nation like
- 29:44America, which is all about
- 29:45individualism and self-exression and
- 29:48man, what a great land that you can just
- 29:50do your thing, that our very birth
- 29:53moment was not I,
- 29:57but it was we.
- 30:00There was a power in the Wii that is
- 30:04greater than the me. And that is what
- 30:07kingdom living is really all about. It's
- 30:10not hating yourself. It's just
- 30:12understanding that you're in a big story
- 30:14and in a big drama that's unfolding and
- 30:18it is the story of God and we all have a
- 30:20role to play in it but we're embracing
- 30:22our role in a greater story. So succeed,
- 30:26do great, win, achieve, awesome
- 30:30but kingdom
- 30:32man. Everybody's got World Cup fever
- 30:34right now. This is maybe one of the
- 30:35greatest things we've seen in a while
- 30:36that every nation now is trying to out
- 30:38sing the other nation's national anthem.
- 30:42Am I right?
- 30:43>> Have you ever heard people sing the
- 30:44national anthem as loud as you have in
- 30:46the last few weeks in your lifetime? No.
- 30:49>> How many people are coming down the road
- 30:50trying not to spill their beer? You
- 30:52know, they're they're looking for their
- 30:53seat. But man, I'm telling you, people
- 30:54now are like they're engaged like, "Oh,
- 30:56no. You're not going to take us down.
- 30:58Get ready." And then unfortunately, ours
- 31:00doesn't start like some of those really
- 31:01awesome ONES WHERE THEY GO.
- 31:04OURS IS LIKE, "OH, SAY." and you're
- 31:06like, "Oh man, could we just get a boom
- 31:10in there?"
- 31:13And so when the game here in Atlanta
- 31:16went down Wednesday, England and the Dr.
- 31:19Congo, what a clash that was. And then
- 31:24Harry Kane,
- 31:26formerly of Tottenham Hotspurs. Any
- 31:29Hotspurs fans? No.
- 31:33Well, I heard it. I heard it. Cheers,
- 31:36mate. Awesome. I don't know. I don't
- 31:38know where you were. Cheers. I'll drink
- 31:41to that.
- 31:45It's just hot water. That's all that's
- 31:46in there. Trust me, you can come inspect
- 31:48it. Wow. Harry Kane now playing in the
- 31:52German league. He comes through, saves
- 31:56the day. Anybody know what I'm talking
- 31:58about? Or anybody wear this? Okay,
- 31:59great. He saves the day. Now he's
- 32:01running to the corner
- 32:04and what does he do? He grabs his
- 32:07jersey.
- 32:08What does he do? He kisses the three
- 32:13lion crest.
- 32:18What is he saying? This is he is one of
- 32:21the greatest living football players
- 32:25and he is saying I did it.
- 32:29We did it
- 32:33and you've seen it all through this
- 32:35tournament.
- 32:38Footnote,
- 32:40countries that are in shambles.
- 32:45Many of them economies in the tank.
- 32:50leaders,
- 32:53systems,
- 32:55inflation, places you do not want to
- 32:58start a business.
- 33:04There's a we underneath the current.
- 33:09We may not be perfect, but
- 33:11it's not all me. Look around. It is we.
- 33:16And this is the mindset of a follower of
- 33:18Jesus.
- 33:20Yeah, I'm the one who knocked in the
- 33:23goal.
- 33:25Kingdom of God, glory of God, name of
- 33:29God, FAME OF GOD, JESUS FIRST.
- 33:34>> We
- 33:37and that mindset is getting lost
- 33:42to the algorithm
- 33:46of me.
- 33:51Last week we were talking about our
- 33:52private lives
- 33:55versus our public lives.
- 33:59Understanding that what happens in our
- 34:02private life is what ultimately fuels
- 34:05what happens in our public life.
- 34:08So this Jesus who would steal away with
- 34:11the father who who couldn't be found for
- 34:14a moment by the disciples because he
- 34:16needed time alone
- 34:20ultimately
- 34:24did the greatest thing that's ever been
- 34:25done
- 34:28right out
- 34:30in public
- 34:32at 3:00 in the afternoon.
- 34:39Definitely. And please don't email me.
- 34:43Put a new spin on work life balance.
- 34:53Didn't say I got I got to be dead by 3
- 34:55cuz I got to be home by 5.
- 34:57Jesus was saying this is why I'm here.
- 35:01He put a new paradigm in play and it's
- 35:05it's this love works
- 35:10and right at the end his private life
- 35:15which you should fight for
- 35:20fueled his public
- 35:22obedience.
- 35:26the sacrifice that freed the world.
- 35:30On June 6th, 1944,
- 35:342,400
- 35:36young men in our nation died on Omaha
- 35:41Beach.
- 35:44At the top of the bluff
- 35:47are 9,386
- 35:50graves.
- 35:56There was a mindset
- 35:59of we
- 36:03and a willingness
- 36:06to deny self.
- 36:14Jesus went on to say, "For whoever wants
- 36:17to save their life," this is what the
- 36:19algorithm is going to tell us, "Whoever
- 36:21wants to save self will lose their life.
- 36:27But whoever loses their life for me will
- 36:31find it."
- 36:34For what good will it be for someone to
- 36:37gain the whole world, yet forfeit their
- 36:40soul, their self?
- 36:43Or what can anyone give in exchange for
- 36:45their soul? For the son of man is going
- 36:47to come in his father's glory with his
- 36:49angels and then he will reward each
- 36:52person according to what they have done.
- 36:56So the world is going to keep telling
- 36:58us, man, save it. Save it. Save it.
- 37:00Protect it. Save it. Save it. Save it.
- 37:02Manage it. Save it. Manage it. Save it.
- 37:04Manage it. And God is saying, "No, give
- 37:06it away. That's where you find it.
- 37:09Give it away. That's where you'll find
- 37:11it. Give it away. That's where you'll
- 37:14find it." I mentioned that I came from
- 37:16another era. I had a hero when I was
- 37:21high school and college age. His name
- 37:23was Ian North. Most no. It'd be hard to
- 37:26even look up Ian North online and find a
- 37:28lot. Amazing missionary leader, led an
- 37:31organization based in Atlanta that
- 37:33trained pastors in countries all around
- 37:35the world, especially hard-to-reach
- 37:36countries, many of them where preaching
- 37:38the gospel would get you killed.
- 37:41And Ian was in the same church that I
- 37:43was in. His kids were similar age to me.
- 37:48And he was almost hardly ever at church
- 37:50because he was always some other part of
- 37:52the world. But occasionally he'd come
- 37:54and he'd preach and every now and then I
- 37:56would get a little bit of time with him.
- 37:58And I'll never forget having a
- 37:59conversation with him at a retreat that
- 38:01he had invited me to. And and we were
- 38:03just talking for I don't know 30 minutes
- 38:05maybe tops. And he was explaining to me
- 38:07I said, "Tell tell me the secret to
- 38:09life. Tell me the secret to to to you
- 38:11and and Dorothy."
- 38:14And he just looked at me. He's
- 38:15Australian, incredible accent.
- 38:18And he he looked at me. And he said,
- 38:20"Well, you know, our our marriage got
- 38:22off to a very challenging start when we
- 38:24got married and had kids. uh my ministry
- 38:27was really focused on the people of
- 38:30India
- 38:33and it was imperative for me to be there
- 38:34and to raise up churches and leaders and
- 38:37to pastor them and this is in the you
- 38:40know 50s and he's like traveling back
- 38:42and forth was challenging and so in the
- 38:44first I I don't have all the specific
- 38:46details in my mind but generally
- 38:48speaking and then the first two years of
- 38:50our marriage
- 38:52we lived in different continents
- 39:00Did you hear what I just said?
- 39:04Find that
- 39:06in a book somewhere.
- 39:11You're like, man, I must have just
- 39:12wrecked his family. Yeah, his kids are
- 39:14leading
- 39:16the organization that he founded
- 39:20in various parts of the world.
- 39:23They're my age.
- 39:27They're evangelists
- 39:30like their dad
- 39:32and they understand what he understood
- 39:36that the mission
- 39:38is mighty
- 39:41and that freedom
- 39:44and the freest version of me,
- 39:47the fullest version of me, the my best
- 39:51self
- 39:52does not come when the mission is me.
- 39:56It comes when I understand that I am in
- 40:00a mighty mission and sometimes it cost
- 40:06but at the end of that cost is where
- 40:08life is found. I have been around I less
- 40:13than five people in my lifetime
- 40:16of all the people I've known like Ian
- 40:20North.
- 40:25I can tell you from my observation,
- 40:29he has very little
- 40:34regret
- 40:36in heaven
- 40:39and a monster
- 40:42reward.
- 40:46That used to be normal.
- 40:49Preaching that message was normal. Come
- 40:52to the altar. Surrender your life. Sell
- 40:55everything you've got. Go to the
- 40:58nations. Go to the ends of the earth.
- 41:00Get on your knees. Go on your closet.
- 41:02Give sacrificially. That was the
- 41:05message.
- 41:07Does any is anybody old enough to back
- 41:08me up on that? That was the message. I
- 41:12would go down to the front. I would say,
- 41:15"God, I want to surrender my life." I
- 41:17would say, "Jesus, here I am. Send me."
- 41:21And then somehow over time the algorithm
- 41:24has slid into the story and has put us
- 41:27in the center of the orbit and has
- 41:29convinced us that comfort is where life
- 41:32is found.
- 41:35>> And it's robbing us blind
- 41:39of the opportunity to be the best
- 41:42version of us that there can be. God is
- 41:48recommending to you today and to me
- 41:50today. It's not about you.
- 41:55>> Oh, you are prized and blessed more than
- 41:59you know. Don't get down on yourself
- 42:02today.
- 42:05But life comes
- 42:09when you lay it all down
- 42:12and say, "You know what, God?
- 42:15It's not about how I feel. It's about
- 42:17what do you say?
- 42:20It's not about what do I need. It's
- 42:21about what would you like.
- 42:24It's not about what do I think. It's
- 42:26about what have you already said. It's
- 42:29not about what do I want. It's about how
- 42:31can I be of greater service to you.
- 42:34And it's not just about what are my
- 42:36options. It's I already decided my
- 42:40option. And my option was to totally
- 42:43surrender my life to you. Amen.
