- 0:21There once was
- 0:22a small kingdom
- 0:24around a lake.
- 0:27One very hot summer,
- 0:29it did not rain
- 0:30and the
- 0:31lake dried up.
- 0:35People grew anxious
- 0:37and went to the King.
- 0:42“It has not rained
- 0:45for so long.
- 0:45Our fields are barren!”
- 0:47said the farmers.
- 0:51“There are no fish to catch.
- 0:54How shall we earn a living?”
- 0:57asked the fishermen.
- 1:01“Save us from disaster,
- 1:03good King,”
- 1:06urged the women,
- 1:08as their children cried with thirst.
- 1:17The King sent his four generals
- 1:19in all directions
- 1:21to look for water.
- 1:26The first general
- 1:27went east,
- 1:29towards the sunrise;
- 1:31the second went south,
- 1:33to the dust and heat;
- 1:36the third went west,
- 1:39where the sun sets;
- 1:42and the fourth followed
- 1:44the North Star.
- 2:00They searched day and night,
- 2:03night and day;
- 2:06high and low
- 2:08they searched everywhere,
- 2:11but in vain.
- 2:15Three of the generals returned,
- 2:17empty-handed.
- 2:21But the general
- 2:23who had gone north
- 2:25was determined not to fail
- 2:26his King.
- 2:28At last, he reached
- 2:31a cold
- 2:32mountain village.
- 2:37As he sat
- 2:38at the foot of the mountain,
- 2:39an old woman came by
- 2:41and sat next to him.
- 2:45The general pointed
- 2:46at the horizon
- 2:48and said,
- 2:51“I belong to
- 2:52a beautiful kingdom,
- 2:54where it has not rained
- 2:56for a whole year.
- 2:58Can you help
- 2:59me find water?”
- 3:03The woman motioned
- 3:05the general
- 3:07to follow her
- 3:07up the mountain
- 3:09and into a cave.
- 3:14“We have no water in our country
- 3:15either,”
- 3:17she said.
- 3:21Then, pointing to the icicles
- 3:23in the cave,
- 3:25she continued:
- 3:26“We call this ice.
- 3:29Take some,
- 3:31and your kingdom
- 3:33will never go thirsty again.”
- 3:36The general broke
- 3:38off a huge piece,
- 3:46loaded it onto his horse-cart
- 3:48and rushed back home.
- 4:12By the time he reached the court,
- 4:16the enormous icicle had melted
- 4:19into a
- 4:20small lump of ice.
- 4:24Nobody in the court
- 4:25had ever seen ice,
- 4:27so everybody gazed at it
- 4:28with wonder.
- 4:36“This must be
- 4:37a water-seed!”
- 4:39one of the ministers
- 4:40exclaimed suddenly.
- 4:43The King ordered the ‘water-seed’
- 4:45to be sowed immediately.
- 4:53While the farmers dug a hole,
- 4:56the lump
- 4:57dwindled in the sun.
- 5:00They swiftly
- 5:01placed the seed in the hole,
- 5:03but before they could cover it up,
- 5:05it had vanished.
- 5:09The farmers there grew confused
- 5:11and worried.
- 5:17They dug deeper and deeper
- 5:18into the earth,
- 5:20all night long,
- 5:21looking for
- 5:22the mysterious seed.
- 5:34At the break of dawn,
- 5:36the King found the farmers
- 5:38fast asleep around a hole.
- 5:42Curious, he
- 5:44peeped in
- 5:46and cried out in amazement:
- 5:50“Wake up, my worthy men –
- 5:53the water-seed
- 5:54has sprouted!
- 5:56There’s water in the hole!”
- 6:05This is how the
- 6:07first well was created.
