- 0:00we would like to take this opportunity
- 0:01to apologize for the poor quality of the
- 0:04following recording this was due to a
- 0:06deterioration of the original Master
- 0:09tape although processed digitally some
- 0:12artifacts do remain that some listeners
- 0:15may find distracting we hope this will
- 0:17not spoil your enjoyment of this message
- 0:19by Dr Lloyd Jones additionally due to
- 0:22the deterioration of the tape the first
- 0:25few moments of the message were missing
- 0:27and we join Dr Lloyd Jones now as he
- 0:30looks at the state of Fallen man here's
- 0:33Dr Lloyd
- 0:34Jones we looked at him and
- 0:38considered character and the nature of
- 0:41his being We examined as far as we can
- 0:44in the light of scriptural
- 0:46teaching what this image of God in men
- 0:49really means we found that he was in
- 0:52correspondence with in fellowship with
- 0:54God reflect something of the glory of
- 0:57God happy careful
- 1:01able to live without toiling eating of
- 1:05the fruit of the Garden in a state of
- 1:09bliss and possessed of an original
- 1:13righteousness an uprightness his moral
- 1:16being and character corresponding to the
- 1:19god with whom he was thus in
- 1:23Fellowship that is the picture which the
- 1:26scriptures give us of men as he was
- 1:29created created by God and as he existed
- 1:32and lived in this world at the
- 1:36beginning but now obviously as we look
- 1:39at men today in the
- 1:42world we see something very
- 1:45different the whole picture is entirely
- 1:50changed and the question to which we
- 1:52must address ourselves obviously
- 1:54therefore is what is it that uh has
- 1:58produced this change we look at men's
- 2:00present moral and spiritual and even
- 2:04physical
- 2:07condition and I say that we see
- 2:10something entirely
- 2:12different we are confronted by a new
- 2:16series of
- 2:18phenomena with regard to life and
- 2:22death and the whole character of human
- 2:27nature and human life in this world
- 2:31and of course the first question to
- 2:33which the gospel and the preaching of
- 2:34the Gospel of Jesus Christ must address
- 2:37itself always is just
- 2:40that what is this what is the matter
- 2:43with me what's wrong with him if we talk
- 2:46about a Salvation why does he need it in
- 2:50other
- 2:50words you can't escape this uh whole
- 2:57doctrine of men and of sin
- 3:01now there are many explanations which
- 3:03have been put forward in an attempt to
- 3:06account for the state in the condition
- 3:08of men and of the world as we know them
- 3:11at the present time I mustn't keep you
- 3:13with these although many of them are
- 3:15really worthy of careful Examination for
- 3:17the sake of refuting them but uh I'm
- 3:20trying not to do that more than I'm
- 3:22bound to because I'm anxious to keep
- 3:25rather to a positive exposition of the
- 3:28Biblical teaching
- 3:30and yet it is necessary that we should
- 3:33just refer to these other theories and
- 3:36ideas in
- 3:37passing where it merely for this reason
- 3:39that there are people who think
- 3:42sometimes that if a preacher doesn't
- 3:45mention a thing it means he's never
- 3:46heard of it uh well I would just uh like
- 3:50young intellectuals who may be amongst
- 3:52us therefore to know that though we
- 3:54don't spend a great deal of time with
- 3:56these things it isn't because we're not
- 3:58aware of them
- 4:00but that we think it's more profitable
- 4:01to be positive rather than negative
- 4:04however having said that let me just
- 4:07mention one or two there are those who
- 4:10would have believe that good and evil
- 4:15are alike of the very essence of life
- 4:17it's a very old theory that it goes back
- 4:21even before the Christian era there are
- 4:23people who believe that there are two
- 4:25great principles involved the principle
- 4:27of good and the principle of evil the
- 4:29technical term for that is what's called
- 4:31dualism it believes that good and evil
- 4:34as of the very essence of life some
- 4:37would even say that there is a God who
- 4:41controls the evil as well as a God who
- 4:43controls the good and there have been
- 4:45various ramifications of that you will
- 4:47find it in various other religions and
- 4:51that's why it is important just a little
- 4:53that we should know of its
- 4:55existence but now we've already dealt
- 4:57with that in previous lectures
- 5:01when we have rejected that because not
- 5:03only is there nothing to suggest that
- 5:05teaching in the Bible it really cannot
- 5:08be
- 5:08substantiated from an examination of men
- 5:11and of life as they
- 5:14are another attempted explanation
- 5:16obviously is the one that works itself
- 5:19out from the theory of
- 5:22evolution that man is only an
- 5:25enemy and that what we witness in life
- 5:28and the world therefore is nothing but
- 5:30the manifestation of certain animal
- 5:33qualities and
- 5:34characteristics clearly I need go into
- 5:36this again because in refuting the
- 5:38theory of evolution in dealing with the
- 5:41doctrine of creation we've already been
- 5:44answering this particular Theory
- 5:48beforehand then when you do come to
- 5:52theories and
- 5:54ideas which uh are not based upon
- 5:56Evolution or upon this principle of evil
- 5:59but are prepared to look at it in Men in
- 6:01and of himself there are again a great
- 6:04variety of
- 6:07explanations there are those who would
- 6:09say that what the Bible calls evil and
- 6:11sin is just uh a kind of
- 6:16resistance that is an essential part of
- 6:18human nature and has which has been put
- 6:21there by God in order that men might
- 6:23have something to overcome and by
- 6:25overcoming it that he should grow now of
- 6:28develops you muscle or if you're using
- 6:30any kind of
- 6:32instrument the way to develop your power
- 6:35is to act against a resistance and
- 6:37they've said therefore that what is
- 6:40called evil is just a kind of principle
- 6:43of antagonism or of
- 6:45resistance that God has put in man's
- 6:48nature in order that he might have
- 6:49something to overcome and to counteract
- 6:51and thereby grow and develop and not
- 6:54remain
- 6:56steady then there are other theories
- 6:59which would regard it as merely the
- 7:02absence of something the absence of
- 7:05knowledge the absence of understanding
- 7:07this is what the Bible calls sin and
- 7:10evil are just negative
- 7:13conditions and if only men had more
- 7:15knowledge and were better educated and
- 7:17more cultured he'd get rid of all this
- 7:20it's uh rather that he's deprived of
- 7:24certain qualities and all he needs
- 7:26therefore is to be instructed and
- 7:28trained and uh to be developed and he'll
- 7:31get rid of all this and slap them
- 7:34off well you you see the type and the
- 7:37kind of theory that has been put forward
- 7:39there are large numbers of them but they
- 7:42all more or less in the end bile down to
- 7:44the ones that I've already mentioned to
- 7:47you this idea of an evolutionary lag
- 7:50keeps on coming back and then there's
- 7:53this uh whole series of theories which
- 7:56are based upon uh the explanation that
- 7:59it's an absence of some positive
- 8:02qualities they put it like this for
- 8:03instance they say you mustn't say about
- 8:05a man that he's a bad man what you
- 8:07should really say is that he's not a
- 8:09good man sin is negative it's the
- 8:12absence of qualities rather than the
- 8:14presence of a quality I shall have to
- 8:16return to that later when I come to
- 8:19consider the doctrine of sin a little
- 8:21more
- 8:22directly but I think I've said enough to
- 8:24show you that men face to face with this
- 8:28problem is face to face with every
- 8:31problem always does his utmost to avoid
- 8:35the plain and clear teaching of
- 8:37scripture and therefore he invents and
- 8:40he imagines these theories which he
- 8:43cannot
- 8:44substantiate in any way
- 8:47whatsoever now then over and against all
- 8:51that we are confronted by the biblical
- 8:54doctrine of the Fall the fall of men and
- 8:59at once we are face to face with this
- 9:01question what is this is it history or
- 9:04isn't
- 9:06it is what we read together plain
- 9:09unvarnished historical fact or is it not
- 9:13it's obviously a crucial and a vital
- 9:17question and therefore you've had people
- 9:19coming forward and suggesting that it
- 9:20isn't history but that it's
- 9:23allegory that it it isn't really true it
- 9:26didn't happen like that they say it's a
- 9:28very wonderful picture
- 9:30which is designed to give us an account
- 9:33of men's gradual change in a pictorial
- 9:38manner it's a picture this is not a bare
- 9:41blunt historical
- 9:44description that's one way that people
- 9:47have tried to avoid the clear statement
- 9:49which is here made by dismissing it as
- 9:51an elor then there are others who say
- 9:53not so much that it's an allegory as
- 9:55that it's a
- 9:56myth what is a myth well this is their
- 9:58definition of a myth a myth is say is
- 10:01not actual
- 10:04history but it is an account of
- 10:07something that is true in and of itself
- 10:10the truth it conve conveys it true these
- 10:14things they say didn't really happened
- 10:16but what is there
- 10:18depicted describes something that really
- 10:22has happened it didn't happen like that
- 10:24but something of that order of Truth did
- 10:27take place that's their definition of a
- 10:31myth it's uh a kind of historical
- 10:35account therefore of something that is
- 10:38historically true though it may not have
- 10:40happened exactly in this
- 10:43way now that's the sort of thing that
- 10:45people say the Bible doesn't say it but
- 10:48uh that is the way in which people try
- 10:49to avoid what the Bible says they
- 10:51describe it as a
- 10:53myth then the Ingenuity and the
- 10:56imagination of men has exercised itself
- 10:58very much through throughout the
- 10:59centuries over the question of this
- 11:03Serpent and they say the serpent wasn't
- 11:05R an animal of course the serpent they
- 11:09say is just a kind of
- 11:11symbol and he is a symbol that is meant
- 11:14to represent say some
- 11:17covetousness oh no say others he's the
- 11:20serpent is a symbol that represents
- 11:22sexual
- 11:24desire uh others say no that he's a
- 11:28symbol to represent
- 11:30earing or straying
- 11:33reason and others say that he's just a
- 11:36symbol figure a kind of counter to
- 11:39represent Satan himself in other words
- 11:42they don't believe in the literal
- 11:45serpent the serpent is only a symbol a
- 11:48figure to
- 11:50represent something else some form of
- 11:53luster of error or even Satan
- 11:57himself and then we come to those who
- 12:01even accepting the serpent have their
- 12:04difficulty and their difficulty is of
- 12:07course about the question as to whether
- 12:09the serpent ever spoke or not they say
- 12:13they can accept the idea of the serpent
- 12:16but they cannot believe that the serpent
- 12:19literally and actually
- 12:21spoke now I've put all these
- 12:24difficulties that people have put
- 12:27forward these objections that have been
- 12:28registered
- 12:30in order that we may consider them all
- 12:32together now what do we say about all
- 12:34these matters well the obvious thing to
- 12:36say the thing we must say is this that
- 12:40the whole statement in this chapter is
- 12:42given to us as history there's no
- 12:45suggestion of allegory here at all it
- 12:48offers itself to us as plain unvarnished
- 12:51fact and
- 12:53history and if you begin to say that it
- 12:56isn't history or that parts of it are
- 12:57not history you'll find yourself in a
- 12:59utterly contradictory position for
- 13:01instance we are told there about the
- 13:03punishment that followed men's sin and
- 13:05transgression in verses 14 and 15 and if
- 13:08you don't accept that well then you've
- 13:10got to shed a great deal of the Bible
- 13:13because the consequences that followed
- 13:14and which are described here have
- 13:17continued ever since right until this
- 13:19night and the whole case of the Bible is
- 13:21dependent upon that being fact so if a
- 13:24part of is is f why isn't the whole of
- 13:27it f
- 13:31and uh therefore I say that it seems to
- 13:34me the only possible thing to do is to
- 13:38accept it all as
- 13:39fact and personally I'm in no difficulty
- 13:42at all about
- 13:44that the moment you believe in
- 13:47God the moment you believe in the
- 13:52devil then you are entitled to expect
- 13:56Miracle you are entitled to expect
- 13:59things that you cannot understand you
- 14:01are entitled to expect things that are
- 14:05Supernatural and the Bible says that it
- 14:08is the ultimate answer to people who are
- 14:09in trouble over
- 14:11Miracles I say the moment you believe in
- 14:15God as the Bible pictures God you really
- 14:18shouldn't be in any trouble about
- 14:21miracle and it's exactly the same over
- 14:23this question of the serpent
- 14:25speaking if you believe in the devil as
- 14:28the V depicts him well then you must
- 14:30believe and you should have no
- 14:32difficulty in believing that he has
- 14:34power even to make a serpent
- 14:39speak so that all this seems to me to be
- 14:42utterly unnecessary it's not only a
- 14:45contradiction of what we've already
- 14:46agreed about in previous lectures but I
- 14:50say it seems to me to be quite
- 14:51unnecessary but over and above
- 14:54it I want to call your attention to
- 14:56certain other scriptures
- 14:59which clearly teach that what we have in
- 15:01the third of Genesis is literal
- 15:03history take for instance what you read
- 15:05in the Book of Job in the 31st chapter
- 15:09and the 33rd
- 15:12verse if I covered my
- 15:15transgressions as
- 15:17Adam by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom
- 15:21says joob you notice what he says if I
- 15:25covered my transgressions as Adam by
- 15:29feing mine iniquity in my
- 15:31bosom it's supporting the historicity of
- 15:34this third of Genesis then take Hosea 6
- 15:38and verse
- 15:397 in this authorized version which I
- 15:41have here it reads like this but they
- 15:44like men have transgressed the Covenant
- 15:47but it's generally agreed and I think
- 15:48you'll find it in the revised and
- 15:50certainly in this new American revised
- 15:53standard edition it's like this that
- 15:55they like Adam
- 15:59have transgressed the Covenant like
- 16:03Adam but there's a still more important
- 16:05one of course it's in The Second Epistle
- 16:07to the Corinthians in the 11th chapter
- 16:09and the 3D
- 16:11verse where the Apostle Paul writes but
- 16:14I fear lest by any means as the serpent
- 16:17beguiled Eve through his subtlety so
- 16:21your minds should be corrupted from the
- 16:24Simplicity that is in Christ you notice
- 16:27what he says as the serpent begil
- 16:32the the historicity the Apostle claims
- 16:35that he's divinely inspired and that
- 16:38what he writes therefore is without
- 16:39error yet that is what he said and then
- 16:42you've got another reference in the
- 16:44first epistle to Timothy in the second
- 16:46chapter and in the 14th verse where the
- 16:49Apostle deals with the qu vexed question
- 16:51of women teaching and things of that
- 16:54kind in the church and this is what he
- 16:56says and Adam was not deceived but the
- 17:00woman being deceived was in the
- 17:03transgression that's the first epistle
- 17:05to Timothy the 2 chapter and the 14th
- 17:08verse in other
- 17:10words it does always seem to me to be
- 17:12very pathetic when people in the
- 17:14interest of some supposed scientific
- 17:16knowledge they've got have to feel that
- 17:18they've got to dismiss this historicity
- 17:20and say it's allegory or myth or
- 17:21something like that or that parts of it
- 17:23are true and parts are not and imagine
- 17:26that they've solved their problems but
- 17:27my dear friend you're creating mendous
- 17:29problems for yourself what you make of
- 17:31these statements in other parts of
- 17:32scripture what happens to the whole
- 17:34argument of the Apostle Paul with
- 17:36respect to those two matters which he
- 17:38deals with in other words as we've
- 17:41already seen if you begin to play fast
- 17:44and loose with the scriptural teaching
- 17:46at any one point in the interest of any
- 17:49extraneous knowledge you'll find your
- 17:51whole system will be shaking somewhere
- 17:54or
- 17:55another and therefore though again one
- 17:57has to say that there are certain
- 17:58certain things one doesn't understand
- 18:00for myself I'm in no trouble and in no
- 18:03difficulty whatsoever in accepting this
- 18:06third of Genesis as being literal actual
- 18:12history very
- 18:15well well now then accepting it like
- 18:17that as history let's examine it and see
- 18:20what it tells
- 18:22us the first thing he tells us is this
- 18:26that evil and sin and temptation
- 18:30came from the
- 18:33outside they came from Satan using the
- 18:38serpent the thing I'm anxious to
- 18:40emphasize is this there was nothing in
- 18:43men's own Constitution that produced
- 18:46it there was no physical necessity at
- 18:50all to produce it it was nothing sensual
- 18:54in men that produced
- 18:56it it came to men enti L from the
- 19:00outside and he had a perfect free will
- 19:03to decide what to do with it it's a most
- 19:06important point that that is of the very
- 19:08essence of the Biblical
- 19:12teaching we must get rid of all these
- 19:14ideas that say that it is something
- 19:17that's in the body in the human frame in
- 19:19a man's flesh or that it's uh uh some
- 19:23form of uh natural desire that drags men
- 19:27down I think I reminded you last week
- 19:28weak that the Roman Catholic Doctrine
- 19:30about the image does suggest that very
- 19:33strongly it its view is that
- 19:36men always had a kind of struggle that
- 19:40the animal the bodily part of men always
- 19:43had a tendency to pull him down and that
- 19:45God gave him that derum super aditum
- 19:48that extra gift of original
- 19:50righteousness in order to enable men to
- 19:52keep this lower part that was always
- 19:54tending to pull him down at Bay the
- 19:56Bible says nothing of the kind
- 19:58man was perfectly
- 20:00balanced there was nothing within him at
- 20:03all to drag him down it came entirely
- 20:06from the
- 20:07outside very vital to our Doctrine as we
- 20:10shall see time and time
- 20:12again now then here it comes from the
- 20:15outside what are the steps I'm simply
- 20:18now reminding you of what we are told in
- 20:19the third of
- 20:21Genesis the first thing that happened
- 20:24was that the uh
- 20:26serpent attacked the woman
- 20:29not the man you see the significance of
- 20:32that in some of the quotations I've
- 20:33already given you he attacked the woman
- 20:37rather than the
- 20:39man I don't go into that this evening we
- 20:41shall come to that some other time
- 20:43perhaps but the Bible emphasizes it not
- 20:46only in this chapter but
- 20:48elsewhere and this is what
- 20:50happened the woman began to listen to
- 20:53the Slanders of the devil against God
- 20:59she began to doubt God's word and began
- 21:01to doubt God's
- 21:03love then you remember we are told she
- 21:06began to look at the thing at which of
- 21:09which God had prohibited to
- 21:12look then having looked at it and having
- 21:15seen that it was good to each she began
- 21:16to last after it and to desire it this
- 21:20thing which had been
- 21:22prohibited and that in turn led her to a
- 21:25definite Act of Disobedience she did
- 21:28deliberately broke God's commandment and
- 21:31did the thing that God had told her and
- 21:34Adam not to
- 21:37do now the question obviously at this
- 21:39point is what made her do
- 21:43this and Adam you remember on being
- 21:45offered the fruit took it from her and
- 21:47at with her so they are both in the
- 21:50transgression the woman first The Men
- 21:52followed now the question that arises is
- 21:55what made them do
- 21:57this now ultimately of course we can't
- 21:59answer that
- 22:01question nobody has been able to answer
- 22:04that question the most we can say is
- 22:06this that men's moral Constitution is
- 22:10being made in the image of God and his
- 22:12possession of a free will at any reld
- 22:14the possibility of his doing that but
- 22:17beyond that we can't get even as we
- 22:19couldn't arrive at any ultimate
- 22:21explanation of how Satan himself
- 22:24originally fell but we notice this
- 22:29that ambition came into
- 22:31it and ambition taking a particular form
- 22:35and the form was
- 22:36this it was a desire for a short road to
- 22:40Divine
- 22:41knowledge now I'm most anxious to
- 22:44emphasize that for this
- 22:46reason I'm never tired of saying in this
- 22:49Pulpit that the ultimate trouble with
- 22:52most false doctrines and especially most
- 22:54false doctrines of
- 22:56sanctification is that they're trying to
- 22:58arrive at something by means of a
- 23:01shortcut and you see that was the
- 23:03original cause of men's
- 23:07downfall God had got his program for
- 23:09them and God's program was a program of
- 23:12development in fellowship with him and
- 23:14ultimately they were going to arrive at
- 23:16this position but the Devil comes along
- 23:18and says but you needn't go that way you
- 23:20needn't take all that time about it you
- 23:22just do what I'm telling you and you'll
- 23:23be there at once
- 23:26shortcut the shortcut always appeals to
- 23:29men he always has a feeling that God's
- 23:32way is too slow and too laborious and
- 23:34you'll find that most Cults are based
- 23:37upon this idea of offering you something
- 23:39by an easy and a quick method always
- 23:42much more rapid and much more simple and
- 23:44much more direct and quick than is the
- 23:46biblical method you get it even there in
- 23:49the original
- 23:51Temptation and the second thing of
- 23:53course was this
- 23:56insinuated doubt of God God's
- 24:00love now then what did it result in well
- 24:03it resulted in this I'm still talking
- 24:05not of the actual consequences but the
- 24:07result in their minds it led to a
- 24:10transgression of God's law and to a
- 24:12departure from
- 24:14God perhaps we can sum it up like this
- 24:18it was a refusal on the part of men I'm
- 24:22speaking of Adam and Eve together it was
- 24:24a refusal on the part of men to subject
- 24:27himself to the will of God
- 24:29and to have God to determine the C of
- 24:31his
- 24:33life and his determination to settle
- 24:36this for himself that was it in its
- 24:38Essence the real essence of what took
- 24:41place was that they pushed on one side
- 24:44God's plan God's purpose and substituted
- 24:48for it their own idea and their own
- 24:52method the famous Professor Emil
- 24:55Bruner has quite an interesting
- 25:00psychological analysis if you like of
- 25:03what took place he puts it like this he
- 25:04says there were three
- 25:06elements desire the
- 25:09Apple then the whispered
- 25:13doubt about God which stirred and
- 25:16inflamed the desire still more and then
- 25:20he says that finally
- 25:22ambition turn the
- 25:25scales the original desire
- 25:29then uh the serpent plays on that by
- 25:32this whispered doubt but still there's
- 25:35hesitation then ambition comes in you
- 25:37can be like God you'll know everything
- 25:40if only and the the ambition proved too
- 25:42much and over tilted the
- 25:44balance and Men
- 25:49fell the one other point I would like to
- 25:52call your attention to here is the
- 25:55extraordinary correspondence between
- 25:57what is described here
- 25:58in this third chapter of Genesis and
- 26:01what John tells us in his first epistle
- 26:03in the second chapter in the 16th verse
- 26:06where he says love not the world you
- 26:09remember he then divides it up into the
- 26:11lust of the Flesh and the lust of the
- 26:14eye and the pride of
- 26:17life desire and then seeing that the
- 26:21fruit was good to look upon the lust of
- 26:22the eye and then this pride of life this
- 26:25desire to be great and to be marvelous
- 26:27and to be
- 26:28wonderful the same
- 26:30elements indeed as I've already
- 26:32suggested you will find that running
- 26:34right through the Bible from beginning
- 26:36to end what you have in embryo here is
- 26:40worked out everywhere it's the same
- 26:43thing always and those are the main
- 26:46elements in connection with
- 26:48it but to all that I would add again two
- 26:52special
- 26:53points and here they
- 26:56are sin is only only possible to men and
- 26:59was only possible to men at the
- 27:01beginning because he has a free
- 27:04spiritual
- 27:07personality it isn't possible to an
- 27:09animal it's only possible to
- 27:11man men's being made in the image of God
- 27:15in a most extraordinary way made sin
- 27:18possible for him because of his free
- 27:21personality because of his free
- 27:24will the very fact I say that he was
- 27:26made in the image and likeness of God
- 27:29exposes him in and of itself to this
- 27:32possibility no more than that but it
- 27:34certainly does that then the point I
- 27:37would like to put to your consideration
- 27:39and for your reflection is this
- 27:42one we realize and we know and we've
- 27:45discovered from the
- 27:46scriptures that the that there are
- 27:49angels who have fallen as well as
- 27:52men but you notice we are never told
- 27:55anywhere in the Bible that the Angels
- 27:57the Fallen angels are going to be
- 28:00redeemed salvation is only for
- 28:04men and you may have ask yourself the
- 28:06question five the Angels fell as men
- 28:10fell why shouldn't there be salvation
- 28:13for angels as well as for
- 28:16men and I myself am very ready to accept
- 28:19the explanation that has been put
- 28:20forward which is
- 28:23this that in the case of men the
- 28:26Temptation and the fall came as I've
- 28:28just been reminding you from the
- 28:30outside it isn't an excuse and yet it
- 28:33does make a
- 28:34difference when Satan
- 28:37fell he fell because of something
- 28:41within the Temptation did not come to
- 28:43Satan outside
- 28:45himself it was something that happened
- 28:47within what what it was we don't know
- 28:50but there is at inate that different and
- 28:53is it possible I wonder that God in his
- 28:55infinite grace and kindness has drawn
- 28:57that totin
- 28:59because men were subjected to this
- 29:01subtlety this beguiling this malign this
- 29:05Angelic power of this Fallen
- 29:09Angel God has had mercy and compassion
- 29:12and pity upon men and has provided for
- 29:15him a way of Salvation and has not done
- 29:18so in the case of the angel I leave it
- 29:21for your consideration let us come
- 29:23rather to a practical Point what were
- 29:25the results
- 29:28of this
- 29:29Disobedience this transgression of God's
- 29:32law and
- 29:33commandment on the part of men the conse
- 29:37the results are described here very
- 29:39clearly the first thing that we are told
- 29:42is that they became conscious of their
- 29:48flesh it's an extraordinary thing this
- 29:52man as he was made originally by God was
- 29:54quite unconscious about his flesh and
- 29:56about his body
- 29:58the men and the wom were naked and that
- 30:01was no trouble to them at all but the
- 30:04moment they said the moment they fall
- 30:07they become conscious of their flesh
- 30:09they become ashamed of it a shame
- 30:11develops in connection with the body and
- 30:13they try to cover themselves you
- 30:15remember with the these
- 30:18figing the scripture emphasizes that
- 30:21because it clearly has great
- 30:25significance we've got to be careful as
- 30:28we not
- 30:29it because there are two dangers
- 30:31confronting us there is the danger of
- 30:33making too much of
- 30:35this sex element in sin the bodily
- 30:38element in sin and there's the danger of
- 30:40making too little of it but the
- 30:42scripture specifically calls our
- 30:44attention to it the first thing that
- 30:47happened was Man became conscious of his
- 30:49body and his body became a problem to
- 30:51him and it's a problem ever
- 30:53since the difference between a man and
- 30:56an animal is that an animal clearly is
- 30:57not conscious of his own body in the way
- 30:59that man is it's of the very essence of
- 31:01men's sinful condition that his body
- 31:04which was given to him by God and which
- 31:06in a sense is a reflection of God's Own
- 31:08Glory the form of God as we saw last
- 31:10week has become a problem to me it's one
- 31:13of his greatest problems of all and
- 31:16there is this sense of shame in
- 31:17connection with
- 31:19it then the next thing that's emphasized
- 31:21is his sense of
- 31:23guilt the moment he did that he knew we'
- 31:25done something wrong
- 31:28he was immediately condemned within
- 31:30himself he became
- 31:32guilty the next thing that's emphasized
- 31:35is that he began to develop a fear of
- 31:37God which he hadn't got
- 31:39before and instead of running to God
- 31:42when God calls him in the cool of the
- 31:44evening he runs away from him to hear
- 31:46the voice of God to men before that was
- 31:48the highest Bliss possible he was in
- 31:50that state of perfect correspondence he
- 31:52had no Craven fear of God and he ran to
- 31:55God he now runs away from him he's
- 31:57developed the fear of God and it's
- 32:00persistent and of course another way of
- 32:03putting that is to say that he lost his
- 32:04fellowship with God and His sense of
- 32:08fellowship with God the thing that he
- 32:10gloried in above everything he now
- 32:14loses the next thing that is emphasized
- 32:17is this that he obviously and clearly
- 32:19underwent a spiritual death the break of
- 32:21this link with God produced a spiritual
- 32:25death in he's he's in an entirely State
- 32:28and
- 32:30condition the next thing that we are
- 32:32told about him is that he was
- 32:34driven out of paradise out of the
- 32:38garden and not allowed to return there
- 32:40in and of himself and by his own valtion
- 32:43you remember the Flaming sword that was
- 32:45there to guard and to Bar his entry in
- 32:48and of himself he's sent out of paradise
- 32:51he's not allowed to come
- 32:53back but in addition to that we find
- 32:55that he's in an entirely new
- 32:56relationship to Nature
- 32:58nature he now has the tile he now has
- 33:02the sweat it's by the sweat of his face
- 33:04he's going to earn his bread there was
- 33:06no toiling there was no sweating before
- 33:09now by the sweat of his face and by the
- 33:11sweat of his brow difficulties and
- 33:14obstacles arise in nature he's got to
- 33:16overcome them he's got to tame nature
- 33:18the thorns and the Briars and all the
- 33:21rest
- 33:24of moreover we find that he's clearly
- 33:27undergone a perversion of his moral
- 33:31nature you see that at once in the story
- 33:33of Cain that
- 33:35follows he inherited that there was a
- 33:37perversion in his very nature which he
- 33:39inherited from his
- 33:42parents and the last consequence that is
- 33:44noted here is that of physical
- 33:49death now we just touched upon this on a
- 33:52previous occasion let me put it like
- 33:54this this
- 33:56evening then there is no need for us in
- 33:58a sense to go into the question as to
- 34:01what men's original condition was we put
- 34:04it like this I think you will
- 34:06agree that there was no need for him to
- 34:10die if men had obeyed God and had
- 34:14continued living his life in
- 34:15correspondence with God he would never
- 34:18have undergone physical
- 34:21death it was possible for him therefore
- 34:25not to die
- 34:27the result of the Fall was
- 34:30this that now it is not possible for him
- 34:34not to
- 34:35die per some of you would like this in
- 34:39Latin the original condition
- 34:42was non Mari it is now non Noni before
- 34:50possible not to die now not possible not
- 34:54to die he must die
- 34:58therefore he need not now he must it is
- 35:02impossible for him now not to
- 35:07die unless there is some special
- 35:10intervention now the scripture puts that
- 35:11in this way that he's told that he's got
- 35:13to return to the dust out of which he
- 35:16came that would not have happened to him
- 35:19but for this sin and this fault and that
- 35:21is confirmed you remember in the fifth
- 35:23chapter of Romans in the 12th verse
- 35:25where it's put like this wherefore as by
- 35:28one men sin entered into the world and
- 35:32death by sin death came in that way by
- 35:37sin and as the result of sin now those
- 35:40are the things that immediately resulted
- 35:42but again there are certain notes that
- 35:44we must be very careful to
- 35:47preserve you notice that though all that
- 35:49happened to men he didn't immediately
- 35:51lose all his intellectual power indeed
- 35:54he's never subsequently lost his
- 35:56intellectual power man retained his
- 35:59intellectual power you'll go on and read
- 36:01the next chapters in Genesis and you'll
- 36:03find how he became musical how he built
- 36:05City how cities how he developed a great
- 36:07civilization he didn't lose his
- 36:09intellectual power neither did he die
- 36:13physically
- 36:15immediately indeed there doesn't seem to
- 36:17have been any immediate physical change
- 36:20in him in other words the results and
- 36:22the effects of sin were delayed both
- 36:25physically and mentally
- 36:29there was subsequently a very great
- 36:31decline in men's intellectual and moral
- 36:34and all his other faculties as you see
- 36:36described in the sixth chapter of This
- 36:37Book of Genesis but it didn't happen at
- 36:39once sometimes people think that the
- 36:42moment Adam sinned and fell he fell as
- 36:45far as men can go he didn't he fell in
- 36:48the essential way I've described but
- 36:50there was a decline and a degradation
- 36:52consequent upon that you see he didn't
- 36:55die at once he died some time later and
- 36:57the same is true about his mental and
- 37:00his moral
- 37:01qualities very well then let me sum up
- 37:03the results in this way there were
- 37:05certain legal results that happened at
- 37:07once men immediately became under
- 37:10condemnation and was punished by God
- 37:13that happened at once under condemnation
- 37:17before he wasn't punished by God whereas
- 37:20formerly was only blessed
- 37:22spiritually he immediately fell from his
- 37:25original righteousness he he lost that
- 37:28at once there wasn't a second's delay
- 37:30the moment he sinned he lost his
- 37:33original righteousness that uprightness
- 37:35that correspondence with the moral
- 37:37character of God that went at once and
- 37:40he was equally separated from God at
- 37:43once his fear came in and the various
- 37:46other things of which I've reminded
- 37:49you but the physical
- 37:52consequences followed in a more
- 37:55leisurely and slow manner in in other
- 37:57words the thing I'm emphasizing is
- 38:00this when men fell he did not cease to
- 38:05be men he was still
- 38:09men he didn't lose any of his essential
- 38:12qualities or elements or
- 38:16attributes what he lost was that
- 38:21original righteousness that
- 38:23correspondence to God but his intellect
- 38:27remains his power of self analysis
- 38:30remains his understanding remains his
- 38:33will remains these things remain we'll
- 38:36come into to that later in Greater
- 38:39detail but he lost his original
- 38:43righteousness he lost that fellowship
- 38:45with
- 38:46God he became fearful of God he hides
- 38:50himself he becomes asham self-conscious
- 38:53in a bad sense doesn't know what to do
- 38:55with himself
- 38:59such is
- 39:01men as the result of the Fall what can
- 39:04we say about it well the best thing I've
- 39:07ever read or ever heard about men as the
- 39:10result of the Fall was what was said of
- 39:13men by an old Puritan called John
- 39:18how he said men as the result of the
- 39:21Fall reminded him of some of these great
- 39:23buildings which you see in London and in
- 39:26the country and in ious Eastern
- 39:28countries where there was once some
- 39:30great palace or great building it's now
- 39:32fallen to ruins and there's a sign
- 39:34outside and the sign says centuries ago
- 39:39such and such a
- 39:41king once dwelt
- 39:45here and John how suggested that written
- 39:49over men everywhere as the result of the
- 39:52Fall is this
- 39:54inscription
- 39:55here God
- 39:58once
- 40:01dwelt he no longer dwells there but once
- 40:05before the
- 40:07fall God
- 40:10dwelt but now it's the
- 40:14ru very well we leave it at that for
- 40:18this evening there are other
- 40:20consequences of the Fall that we shall
- 40:22go on to
- 40:24consider the consequences not only to to
- 40:27Adam and Eve but to their posterity the
- 40:29consequences in nature and that will
- 40:32lead us to consideration of the
- 40:36actual
- 40:38essence of sin we've looked together
- 40:42tonight at one of the
- 40:46profoundest and most Awful Truth that
- 40:49men can ever
- 40:52face that's why men and that's why the
- 40:56world is is as it is
- 40:59tonight from
- 41:02that to
- 41:04this
- 41:06yeah
- 41:08God
- 41:10once what a terrible what an awful what
- 41:13a calamitous
- 41:15thing
- 41:17evil and sin rarely
