- 1:23rules and Customs for how guests should
- 1:24be treated these Customs varied from
- 1:27culture to culture but they all shared
- 1:30common goal to make guests feel welcome
- 1:32and
- 1:33safe two possible explanations why
- 1:36people in ancient times felt required to
- 1:38be hospitable first for religious
- 1:41well-being many ancient cultures
- 1:43believed that providing Hospitality to
- 1:45strangers was essential to their
- 1:47religious well-being scriptures and
- 1:49cultural practices often emphasize the
- 1:51virtue of welcoming guests second for
- 1:54superstitious belief additionally there

- 2:04or invoke the wrath of Gods or Spirits
- 2:06these beliefs and cultural norms
- 2:08fostered a tradition of hospitality that
- 2:10transcended borders and time shaping the
- 2:13very essence of human interaction and
- 2:15Care the nomadic nature of early
- 2:18civilizations also fostered the demand
- 2:19for
- 2:21accommodations nomadic people often
- 2:23traveled long distances and they needed
- 2:25a place to stay when they were on the
- 2:26move and when they were in each other's
- 2:28territory this led to the development of
- 2:31temporary shelters such as tents and
- 2:33Huts as these civilizations settled down
- 2:36they began to build more permanent
- 2:38structures such as houses leading to the
- 2:40development of ins and taverns which
- 2:43provided food and shelter for
- 2:45travelers cultural exchange through
- 2:47trade routes birthed the necessity for
- 2:50lodging Roman roads and the prevalence
- 2:52of Greek language and currency
- 2:54facilitated
- 2:55Hospitality the Roman empire built a
- 2:57vast network of roads which made made
- 2:59travel easier and more common this
- 3:02further increased the demand for lodging
- 3:05as people could now travel longer
- 3:06distances more easily the Greek language
- 3:09and currency were also widely used
- 3:11throughout the Mediterranean which made
- 3:13it easier for people from different
- 3:15cultures to communicate and trade with
- 3:17each other this also contributed to the
- 3:20growth of the hospitality industry the
- 3:22French word hospice is derived from the
- 3:25Latin word hospitium which means Guest
- 3:28House hospices were originally
- 3:30established as places of Refuge for

- 3:41wounded and pilgrims echoing the
- 3:44biblical Narrative of Mary and Joseph's
- 3:46search for shelter in
