- 0:00Who's the best player in the world ever?
- 0:04For me the best player in the world ever
- 0:06is Diego Maradona.
- 0:09If you watch this interview during this
- 0:11time, you would have thought this guy is
- 0:12full of himself. But little would you
- 0:14have known that this guy would have
- 0:17indeed become the greatest player of all
- 0:19time, arguably. This clip is still
- 0:21widely shared today on different social
- 0:23media platforms and they use him to
- 0:25represent [music] the ego.
- 0:31At its core, ego is your sense of self.
- 0:34It's the part of you that wants to be
- 0:36[music] seen, respected, and remembered.
- 0:38Everybody has it, even you watching this
- 0:40video. Ego is the voice that says, "This
- 0:43[music] is me." Sounds simple, but it is
- 0:45dangerous when it starts shouting. Ego
- 0:47is a mirror. When it's clear, you see
- 0:49yourself accurately. But when it's
- 0:51distorted, you either see a god or
- 0:53nothing at all. And most people are not
- 0:56fighting ego itself. They're fighting
- 0:58the need to protect an image of who they
- 0:59think they are. In football, Cristiano
- 1:02Ronaldo is the embodiment of ego. At
- 1:04least that's what people say. And
- 1:05although there is some truth to it,
- 1:07Ronaldo isn't just ego. He's the
- 1:09representation of controlled ego.
- 1:12And that distinction is everything. Ego,
- 1:15in its raw form, destroys players. It
- 1:18blinds them and makes them fall in love
- 1:20with their own reflection. But Ronaldo,
- 1:22he weaponized it. He didn't wake up the
- 1:24best. He decided he would be, then built
- 1:26a machine around that belief. That
- 1:28famous confidence that I'm the best
- 1:30energy people quote wasn't arrogance
- 1:32floating in the air. It was backed by
- 1:34obsession, hours no one saw, discipline
- 1:37most players run from. And they call me,
- 1:40they say tomorrow the training start at
- 1:4210:30. If you can get there for 9:30, 1
- 1:45hour before training. I'm like, "Okay."
- 1:47I got there 8:45 and I everything, but I
- 1:49can hear some now some noise underneath.
- 1:52I'm like, "What's happening down?" And I
- 1:54ask somebody, I ask one of the physio,
- 1:56"What is happening down?" So he say,
- 1:57"Oh, Cristiano is downstairs swimming
- 1:59already."
- 2:00I'm like, "Okay, come on, man."
- 2:01>> Different mentality. Then I ask him,
- 2:03"What time you get here?" He say,
- 2:04"7:30."
- 2:05>> [laughter]
- 2:06>> The training start at 10, 10:30. You get
- 2:08there 7:30 to do what? 3, 4 hours before
- 2:10training. This was the main contribution
- 2:12to his long-term career. That's why he
- 2:14adapted from a flashy winger at Man
- 2:16United to a ruthless goal machine at
- 2:18Madrid, then evolving again later on.
- 2:20Then, on the other hand, Mario Balotelli
- 2:22is what happens when ego stops being a
- 2:25tool and starts being the driver. Very,
- 2:27very talented player, very much an
- 2:29individual. [music]
- 2:30Sometimes that was to the detriment of
- 2:32the team, but there was no doubt in his
- 2:34[music] ability. From the outside,
- 2:36Balotelli seemed untouchable. But
- 2:38inside, his ego often ran the show
- 2:40without discipline. He reacted
- 2:42impulsively, challenged authority, and
- 2:44basically thrived on drama and
- 2:47attention. His talent was never in
- 2:49question, but his ego turned him into a
- 2:51double-edged sword. And when a player is
- 2:53guided by raw ego alone, every mistake
- 2:55becomes personal. Every critique feels
- 2:57like an attack and every distraction
- 2:59pulls focus from what really matters.
- 3:01One great example was the famously
- 3:03turbulent relationship at Inter Milan
- 3:05between him and one of the most
- 3:07successful and decorated football
- 3:09managers in history. In that match, I
- 3:11had
- 3:12all my strikers injured. I was really in
- 3:15trouble and Mario was the only one.
- 3:17Mario gets
- 3:18a yellow card in the in minute 42, 43.
- 3:22So when I go to the dressing room at
- 3:23half time, I spend 14 minutes speaking
- 3:26only for Mario.
- 3:27Mario, I cannot change you.
- 3:30I cannot make a change. I don't have a
- 3:31striker on the bench.
- 3:33Don't touch anybody.
- 3:35Play only with the ball. When we lose
- 3:38the ball, no reaction. If somebody
- 3:40provokes you, no reaction. If the
- 3:43referee makes a mistake, no reaction,
- 3:45Mario, please.
- 3:46Minute 46. No way. Red card.
- 3:50>> [laughter]
- 3:51>> Since leaving Inter, Balotelli has
- 3:52played for 14 different clubs across six
- 3:55countries and that's how talent fades
- 3:57without ever truly dying.
- 4:03In the end, [music] these two players
- 4:04demonstrate that ego is either your
- 4:06engine or your illusion. Ronaldo showed
- 4:08that ego with discipline [music] becomes
- 4:10a ladder, while on the other hand,
- 4:12Balotelli shows us that if uncontrolled,
- 4:15it becomes a trap. This hits closer to
- 4:17home than you think. Your ego doesn't
- 4:18just push [music] you. Sometimes it
- 4:20pressures you to perform an identity. I
- 4:22mean, you've felt it. Trying to speak
- 4:24more just to be seen, [music] feeling
- 4:25off when people don't fully get you,
- 4:27overthinking small moments because they
- 4:29don't match the image in your head.
- 4:30That's the same trap, [music] just in a
- 4:32quieter form, not Balotelli chaos, but a
- 4:34slow, internal friction. So the real
- 4:37takeaway isn't ego is bad, it's that it
- 4:39must be controlled by truth. The moment
- 4:41ego stops [music] listening to truth, it
- 4:43starts writing fantasies and football,
- 4:45like life, always exposes fantasies in
- 4:48[music] the end.
