- 0:00so are you interested in plaster art 3d
- 0:04art textured art and have a lot of
- 0:08questions about texture paste what
- 0:10materials to use how to go about it how
- 0:13to mix it best practices tips and tricks
- 0:18well I'm glad you're here because today
- 0:20I'm going to do my very best to put
- 0:22together the most comprehensive texture
- 0:25paste tutorial along with everything I
- 0:28have learned along the way and perhaps
- 0:31this will be the easiest extra paced
- 0:34tutorial you've ever come across before
- 0:37I go on my name is bayy I'm an artist if
- 0:40you're new here welcome to my channel if
- 0:42you're not welcome back um I love to
- 0:45share my process document my journey and
- 0:48share our tutorial videos and
- 0:51inspiration tutorials with you so if
- 0:54you're not subscribed I hope that you
- 0:55will subscribe because there is a lot to
- 0:59gain on this page I've got lots of
- 1:01interesting tutorials I've got lots of
- 1:04um
- 1:05just inspiration for you in the past I
- 1:09have already shared two videos on my
- 1:14texture paste and what that looks like
- 1:18what my process looks like so a lot of
- 1:19you who have seen that video I know
- 1:21you're
- 1:22wondering what's the update what's new
- 1:24what haven't you shared in those videos
- 1:26and I promise
- 1:27you you want to stick around and keep
- 1:30watching because this is something
- 1:32completely new and perhaps even easier
- 1:35than the videos that I shared in the
- 1:37past so if you're interested then let's
- 1:40get into
- 1:46it now a lot of you who have seen my
- 1:49videos and have watched a lot of my
- 1:52process you know that I
- 1:54work really closely with plaster I would
- 1:58even say primarily with plaster
- 2:00but over the last couple of month I've
- 2:02taken the time to really explore a new
- 2:07material so that I can then share my
- 2:10findings with you and share you know
- 2:12kind of what I've learned over time and
- 2:14so I I really wanted to take the time
- 2:17before sharing this information one to
- 2:20make sure that I'm able to gather my
- 2:23thoughts and learn as much as I can
- 2:26about the product now what product is
- 2:29this you might ask
- 2:31it
- 2:32is the
- 2:35USG easystand
- 2:3790 um now this is joint compound um I
- 2:41think specifically gypsum which is a lot
- 2:45different from um I know in the past
- 2:47I've mentioned that I don't really like
- 2:49to use joint compound and so just to to
- 2:52be very clear when I say I don't like to
- 2:54use joint compound in my mixture I am
- 2:56speaking specifically about like
- 2:58premixed joint compound especially the
- 3:00ones have used like the the DAP um joint
- 3:04compound which shrinks a lot when it
- 3:06dries and tends to crack and so um I'm
- 3:10excited to share a lot about this
- 3:14material which is a joint compound that
- 3:16literally this is all you need um to
- 3:20work your R now why do I think this
- 3:24might be the easiest texture paste
- 3:26tutorial video I've ever shared because
- 3:30ideally um all you need for this paste
- 3:35is really the joint compound powder and
- 3:37water now I know that with plaster you
- 3:40have to mix acrylic paint you have to
- 3:42mix glue into that um and with joint
- 3:46compound well specifically easy sand kny
- 3:50all you have to do is water now I'm
- 3:52going to give you a little bit
- 3:55of I guess an intro into the joint
- 3:58compound that I working with so
- 4:01specifically this brand um
- 4:04USG they do have a lot of joint
- 4:07compounds in this series I've only used
- 4:09the 90 there are so many others I've
- 4:12seen 45 I've seen 20 and I have come to
- 4:17understand that the numbers written on
- 4:20them have a lot of meaning so you want
- 4:23to pay attention to where you're buying
- 4:25because this number tells you how much
- 4:27time you have to work with the product
- 4:29before it becomes
- 4:31unworkable so in this case yes as you've
- 4:34guessed I have exactly 90 minutes to use
- 4:37my mixture before it turns hard unlike
- 4:40plaster which sets in about 15 20
- 4:43minutes once you mix it up this joint
- 4:47compound gives you a lot more leeway
- 4:50especially if you're buying the 90
- 4:51minutes because then you can mix kind of
- 4:55a small batch enough that you know
- 4:57you're able to use in an hour and have
- 5:00and understand that you have exactly 90
- 5:03minutes and so what I prefer to do is to
- 5:05mix up a small batch which I know I can
- 5:07use a 90 minutes and use that up at once
- 5:10now to be very clear with this product
- 5:14you can also go in and add glue and
- 5:17acrylic paint which I will show you as
- 5:20well in this video to preserve the
- 5:23working time now once you add glue and
- 5:26acrylic paint to the mix it pretty much
- 5:29acts like plaster then you you're able
- 5:31to use it for weeks you're able to use
- 5:34it for as long as you
- 5:36want um and so without further Ado I'm
- 5:40going to get into mixing a batch and
- 5:42using it so you're able to
- 5:44see to get started with mixing I'm going
- 5:47to be using this mixing spoon which is
- 5:501/4 of a cup and this is so that a lot
- 5:53of people can have an idea of how to mix
- 5:56although I would say specifically with
- 5:58this product especially seeing that
- 6:00you're only using water with your
- 6:03mixture um you can mix out thin or how
- 6:08thick as you like I I've never really
- 6:11used a specific ratio with my paste a
- 6:16lot of you know that already but I will
- 6:18use this so that you get an idea of what
- 6:21my ratio is if you're trying to
- 6:23replicate what I'm doing
- 6:30and so I'm going to start off with my
- 6:32Mixing Bowl
- 6:34here and I'm going to
- 6:38mix one cup of
- 6:47water I'm just wiping it
- 6:50quickly so that it can dry and I
- 6:55mentioned earlier that this took me some
- 6:58time to make this video because I really
- 7:00wanted to make sure I was learning as
- 7:02much as I could about the product and
- 7:05I've been using this for a couple months
- 7:07now this is an 18 pound bag and it's
- 7:09pretty much almost done so I think I can
- 7:12definitely say that I know all or I know
- 7:16as much as I need to know or I have a
- 7:19good authority to share um about this
- 7:22product so let's get into it
- 7:38so I'm going to
- 7:41mix
- 7:47one
- 7:56two three
- 8:04um and this is about one
- 8:09cup so basically a one to one joint
- 8:12compound to water ratio and let's
- 8:16see as you can see this is a little um
- 8:21runny for my use and the reason I'm
- 8:24showing you this is because I want to
- 8:26show you that this is a part of that is
- 8:29a little bit more flexible do not feel
- 8:32like you need to be locked in into how
- 8:34much if you feel that you don't have
- 8:36enough water you can always add more
- 8:39water and in this case if you have a
- 8:41runny mix like I do you can always add
- 8:43more joint compound so let's add more
- 8:45joint
- 9:02I'm adding another qu cup now I'm mixing
- 9:06it up to see I want it a little bit more
- 9:10thicker so I'm just going to go in and
- 9:13throw one more quar cup of joint
- 9:16compound in there and I think we're good
- 9:19or at least I'm good
- 9:41and a good thing to note is always make
- 9:45sure to check the time as of when you
- 9:47mixed now I know it's about 4:00 p.m. my
- 9:50time which means that I have until
- 9:53roughly about 5:30 p.m. before this mix
- 9:57becomes unusable
- 9:59now once I have it thoroughly mixed just
- 10:02like you would your typical plaster
- 10:05mixture you can go right ahead and use
- 10:08it as is it dries white just like your
- 10:11plaster I'm sure you can see this work
- 10:14next to me this piece that I have been
- 10:15working on I have used joint compound um
- 10:21US Gypsum or us g90 for this work and
- 10:25I've used this for a lot of my projects
- 10:27it's easy to use the fact fact that you
- 10:29only need water and about 90 minutes to
- 10:33use it makes it iess I would say in my
- 10:36opinion one of the easiest mixtures you
- 10:38can make um if you mix it too thick if
- 10:42it's too thick you can always add some
- 10:45water and just continue to mix it mixes
- 10:47very well now they also say that this
- 10:50product is easy to sand and I have to
- 10:53tell you I completely agree now this is
- 10:57especially for you you if you do not
- 11:00like to sand or you have a hard time
- 11:02with sanding I know that a lot of
- 11:04plaster artists 3D artists including
- 11:06myself um we tend to have a love hate
- 11:10relationship with sanding you know it's
- 11:12that one thing that you have to do but
- 11:14maybe do not not maybe do not really
- 11:16like doing and so this product makes
- 11:20that easier because it is really easy to
- 11:25sand when you use this product and it
- 11:27dries and you use uh sandpaper to stay
- 11:30at sanding it's it falls off a little
- 11:35too easily I would actually even caution
- 11:37you here that when you're using this
- 11:39joint compound and you're sanding you
- 11:42run the risk of over sanding and so just
- 11:44be careful there but it it really works
- 11:47like butter it falls off very easily so
- 11:51you're able to smooth out your work
- 11:54you're able to make changes um and
- 11:57because I promised you comprehend ensive
- 11:59video I do want to show
- 12:02you more about this product I want to
- 12:04show you what it looks like to even use
- 12:06the product and
- 12:08so I'm just going to take some
- 12:12time just like plaster you're able to
- 12:16layer this really
- 12:19easily on your R pieces it's really easy
- 12:23to smooth out it's really easy to blend
- 12:27it's really easy to sand
- 12:29and all I've used is water so
- 12:37far and
- 12:42so I'm going to change the camera angle
- 12:45just so you're able to get a better view
- 12:47of me working with the product
- 13:13okay so I just showed you uh just a
- 13:16quick video of what using it looks like
- 13:20it's not very different from plaster it
- 13:23does have a slightly chalkier texture um
- 13:27which honestly I found a little annoying
- 13:29when I first started using the product
- 13:31but I quickly got accustomed to
- 13:35and um what happens if
- 13:39you mix a large batch or you don't
- 13:42anticipate that you're able to use it
- 13:44all within 90 minutes I mentioned
- 13:47earlier that just like plaster you can
- 13:50make some acrylic paint and some glue
- 13:53into the mixture
- 13:55and once you do that you have a much
- 13:59longer working time I mean honestly you
- 14:02you can use it for a week two weeks a
- 14:03month as long as you give it as long as
- 14:06you keep it in a tightly sealed
- 14:09container where it's not drying out um
- 14:12and so this is my preferred top ofwar
- 14:15for mixing all of my plastic mixtures
- 14:18and that's because it comes with a
- 14:19tightly sealed lid um but I do want to
- 14:23show you what that process looks like
- 14:26you know if you think to yourself you
- 14:28know I love the flexibility that 90
- 14:31minutes gives me but maybe I'm thinking
- 14:3490 minutes is not enough for the mixture
- 14:37that I just made and I do not want to
- 14:39waste the product so I'm just going to
- 14:41go ahead right now and add
- 14:44some paint and glue to it so that you
- 14:47can also get a sense of what that
- 14:49process is like what that process is
- 14:52like
- 14:54um I'm going to keep saying it's not
- 14:56very different from plaster it is gyps
- 14:59and plaster is a derivative of gypsum
- 15:03and so keep that in mind
- 15:06but with my experience so far with my
- 15:10experience so far this product gives you
- 15:14a lot more flexibility you can just mix
- 15:17it with water use that batch up forget
- 15:19about it or add paint and glue for a
- 15:24much much longer working time and so
- 15:26what I'm going to do right now is add
- 15:29some acrylic paint and glue to the
- 15:30mixture I'm going to go in with just a
- 15:34four cup of acrylic paint and glue and
- 15:38add that to the
- 15:44mixture this is about as much glue that
- 15:48I
- 15:52need just going to get my palette
- 15:56knife since I I need it for some
- 15:59additional
- 16:01mixing and um I would
- 16:06say I've not really noticed any
- 16:09difference in terms of when you do go in
- 16:12with a paint and the glue in the past
- 16:17I've mixed it with paint and glue from
- 16:20the beginning because I knew that I was
- 16:22mixing a a large batch and will not be
- 16:25able to use a 90 minutes I've also add
- 16:28instances where and I was about maybe 70
- 16:31minutes in and I was like okay whatever
- 16:33I have here I'm not going to be able to
- 16:35use up in the next 20 minutes until just
- 16:38went in within you know like the last
- 16:40quarter and added paint and glue and it
- 16:44still worked fine what I will say is do
- 16:47not wait for it to start hardening into
- 16:49stone before you add your paint and glue
- 16:52you you want to add at some point before
- 16:55that but any point before that should be
- 16:58fine
- 17:03and so this is my good old white acrylic
- 17:06paint I'm just going to go in and add
- 17:10another fourth 1/4 of a cup
- 17:35now that I have G to add and added
- 17:37acrylic paint and glue to my
- 17:42mixture I can work for the I can work
- 17:45with this for as long as I want it's
- 17:49always um a good idea to make sure that
- 17:52you mix thoroughly so that you are sure
- 17:57that the mixture is well mixed mixed and
- 18:00because if you don't there are parts of
- 18:02it that will harden up if they're not
- 18:04incorporated or if if the glue and the
- 18:07acrylic paints is not Incorporated
- 18:09properly and so you always want to keep
- 18:11that in mind and make sure that you're
- 18:13mixing as thoroughly as possible but yes
- 18:16once you add acrylic paint and glue just
- 18:18like plaster you have a really creamy
- 18:21smooth mixture that you can use for a
- 18:23really long time and so I just wanted to
- 18:27share a more in-depth tutorial with new
- 18:32information new details some of you
- 18:35might already be using this joint
- 18:36compounds and some of you may not be
- 18:38aware of it but I needed to take some
- 18:40time to learn the product learn about it
- 18:43use it consistently sharing details with
- 18:46you a lot of people might prefer to use
- 18:49this because at the heart of it you can
- 18:51always mix really small batches and just
- 18:54mix with water it is again very flexible
- 18:58you can have really thick mixture if
- 19:00you're looking to build volume um it
- 19:03doesn't shrink and crack as much as your
- 19:07average premixed joint compound this is
- 19:11um a really good product I will say a
- 19:15lot of you already aware that I have
- 19:16kind of a love hay relationship with
- 19:18joint compound but I will say not this
- 19:20one with my experience using this
- 19:23product I haven't really experienced any
- 19:25cracks I mean you still have to do you
- 19:29know you still have to apply a lot of
- 19:31the basics when it comes to your paste
- 19:34and preventing cracks which is don't
- 19:37layers too thickly that would always
- 19:41lead to some sort of crack or the other
- 19:43again don't water too thinly because
- 19:46then you have way more water than actual
- 19:49products which will compromise the
- 19:52Integrity of your joint compound but it
- 19:54all depends on the application I know I
- 19:56do get a lot of questions about cracks
- 19:59and the likes
- 20:02but the truth is you know this is our
- 20:06this is not science and when it comes to
- 20:09cracks there's so many things that might
- 20:11cause cracks in your mixture and so it's
- 20:15always hard for me to
- 20:17diagnose why someone might be
- 20:19experiencing cracks if I have not really
- 20:22looked at their process step by step you
- 20:24know the air in your your the air in
- 20:28your Atmos might be just a little too
- 20:30dry it might cause your art to dry too
- 20:33quickly C it to shrink a little too
- 20:35quickly that can also lead to cracks and
- 20:38so when it comes to
- 20:40cracks there are so many things you know
- 20:43that can lead to cracks but this right
- 20:46here is a really good product I really
- 20:48wanted to take my time to test and work
- 20:50with it before sharing with you and so I
- 20:53I think a lot of people might find this
- 20:55to be useful given that you only need to
- 20:58buy the one on product if you have paint
- 21:00and acrylic if you have paint and glue
- 21:03on hand great awesome you can always add
- 21:06to the mix it's super flexible and that
- 21:08way you can work for as much as long as
- 21:10you want with it um I will say because I
- 21:14am filming today I know that I'm not
- 21:17going to be able to use the entire batch
- 21:19in 90 minutes um which is why I wanted
- 21:21to include the paint and the glue but
- 21:24also just give you a visual of what that
- 21:27looks like and so I hope that you found
- 21:30this video to be informative I hope that
- 21:33that's what's really helpful for you um
- 21:36I will encourage you as much as possible
- 21:39to experiment with a lot of these things
- 21:42in this processes especially when it
- 21:44comes to creating artwork A lot of it
- 21:47has to be personal you're going to have
- 21:49to figure out what works best for you
- 21:52how you like to use the product um but
- 21:55this is a solid really solid product
- 21:59that you can rely on as a matter of fact
- 22:03I know a lot of artists that are now
- 22:05ditching plaster to work with the easy
- 22:08sand joint compound primarily um and so
- 22:12I've had a blast using it myself I've
- 22:15almost finished an 18 pound bag and I
- 22:18can tell you it's a really awesome
- 22:19product if you want to check out any of
- 22:22those products everything will be linked
- 22:25in the description um feel free to check
- 22:28it out
- 22:29I've also mentioned um there are so many
- 22:33different types of joint compound made
- 22:36by the same people so take notice of
- 22:39exactly what number is written next to
- 22:42the bag you're buying if you're buying
- 22:44USG 45 I believe that means you have 45
- 22:48minutes to work with the product now 90
- 22:50minutes is the highest I have seen and
- 22:52it's the only one I've used um and
- 22:56so I clearly recommend that you get the
- 22:5990 just because it gives you more of
- 23:01that flexibility if you have any
- 23:04questions or anything that I haven't
- 23:05answered please feel free to reach out
- 23:08understand that I am completely
- 23:10self-thought and so what I am sharing
- 23:13with you is my own knowledge I may not
- 23:15be able to answer all of your questions
- 23:18but as much as possible I wanted to make
- 23:21sure that I was preempting your
- 23:24questions giving you ratios showing you
- 23:28how to use it what using it looks like
- 23:30although a lot of you have seen me use
- 23:32this in the past if you've watched my
- 23:34tutorials but may not necessarily be
- 23:36aware of what I'm using so now you know
- 23:39you have that official introduction into
- 23:41the product and and now I also get other
- 23:45questions like you know I mixed my
- 23:49mixture added glue or curly paint um
- 23:53over time it still kind of got hard I
- 23:55will say keep that in mind you know
- 23:59right now what I have is a really creamy
- 24:02malleable texture but by next week when
- 24:06I open this container would I be able to
- 24:08do this with it no it's going to be more
- 24:11of um it's going to be a little bit more
- 24:14caked right and a lot of you might have
- 24:17experienced that but one thing is it is
- 24:20absolutely usable what you'll have will
- 24:23be more of a thicker type paste because
- 24:25the water does evaporate right it it
- 24:28does that to dry out a little bit but
- 24:30you can always introduce water into the
- 24:33mixture as long as you already have
- 24:36paint and acrylic glue in it if you
- 24:40haven't seen any of my previous videos
- 24:43working with plaster or what my plaster
- 24:45mixture tutorial looks like you should
- 24:48definitely check those out I share
- 24:50details about what my plaster mixture
- 24:52looks like it's pretty similar to this
- 24:55um but if you're interested in knowing
- 24:58you know more specifically what working
- 25:01with plaster is or what that process
- 25:04looks like feel free to check out those
- 25:06videos if you're interested in shopping
- 25:08any of my pieces of my artworks um all
- 25:11of the links will be left in the
- 25:13description you should definitely hand
