  1. 0:00So, in these uh three suitcases in front
  2. 0:02of me, I have different amounts of
  3. 0:05money.
  4. 0:05>> Mhm.
  5. 0:06>> And all I want you to do is to let me
  6. 0:09know if I was giving you this amount of
  7. 0:11money, what business you would start.
  8. 0:17Okay. So, the first one
  9. 0:21has
  10. 0:23$500. Yeah.
  11. 0:26Awesome. So, most people would look at
  12. 0:27this and think, "What am I going to do
  13. 0:28with $500?" This is a lot of money,
  14. 0:31right? In in the age of today with
  15. 0:3330-day free trials and uh a lot of
  16. 0:36Silicon Valley funded companies willing
  17. 0:38to give you a lot of money to test your
  18. 0:40product, this goes a long way. So, the
  19. 0:42first thing to come to mind that comes
  20. 0:44to mind is probably my favorite business
  21. 0:46idea of all right now. Thankfully, you
  22. 0:48can start it with even less than this.
  23. 0:50And that would be a business that helps
  24. 0:52implement AI into small businesses,
  25. 0:54small to mediumsiz businesses. So, some
  26. 0:56facts for you. There's 400 million small
  27. 0:59businesses on the planet. They've
  28. 1:01surveyed some of these business owners
  29. 1:03um and 77% of them have admitted that
  30. 1:08like AI would be transformational to
  31. 1:10their business, right? They need AI.
  32. 1:11It's not a fad. It's not going away. 5%
  33. 1:14of them have claimed they're using AI in
  34. 1:17a meaningful way, right? Right? And
  35. 1:18define that as you will. So basically,
  36. 1:20we have this knowledge gap, right? We
  37. 1:23know it's like a it's like a business
  38. 1:24cognitive dissonance, if you will. We
  39. 1:26know we need to do something and we're
  40. 1:27not doing it. Doesn't matter how easy
  41. 1:29the tools are. Doesn't matter how much
  42. 1:32you can create a new website or an app
  43. 1:33with one prompt. Um, they need someone
  44. 1:35to do it, right? I know how to vacuum my
  45. 1:38floor. I know how to clean my house. I
  46. 1:40still would rather just pay someone to
  47. 1:41do it. Okay? And so with a fifth of the
  48. 1:44money, call it a $100, I would start
  49. 1:46learning some vibe coding tools. Um,
  50. 1:49Replet, Lindy, there's a ton of them out
  51. 1:51there. What is vibe coding for anyone
  52. 1:52that doesn't?
  53. 1:52>> Vibe coding is the non-technical person,
  54. 1:56the non-coder such as myself, using
  55. 1:58their natural language to just say,
  56. 2:00"Hey, build me an app that manages
  57. 2:03customers for dog trainers." You'll have
  58. 2:06an app, right? Is it fully functional?
  59. 2:08Is workable yet? Not quite. But 10 to 20
  60. 2:11more prompts and you're good to go.
  61. 2:12>> And for anyone that doesn't know, I I
  62. 2:14would suggest I'm an investor in both
  63. 2:15lovable and replet. So disclaimer, but I
  64. 2:17would recommend going on Replet or
  65. 2:19Lovable and um typing in any website ID
  66. 2:24you have just to have that sort of
  67. 2:25Eureka moment of watching it be made in
  68. 2:27front of you. I think that Eureka moment
  69. 2:29is the moment your mind expands to the
  70. 2:30possibilities that are currently right
  71. 2:32in front of all of us.
  72. 2:33>> Yes.
  73. 2:33>> You know, we think of building websites
  74. 2:35or apps as exclusive to those that have
  75. 2:37spent 5 years learning to code. Mhm.
  76. 2:39>> That has now changed.
  77. 2:40>> Yeah, we can all do it.
  78. 2:42>> Yeah. And everyone should, like you
  79. 2:43said, one prompt, develop an app. Oh,
  80. 2:45what do I prompt? What do I build? Ask
  81. 2:46Chad GBT what to build. Copy paste one
  82. 2:49of those. Ask Chad to prompt it. Take it
  83. 2:51over to repletter lovable, paste it, and
  84. 2:53see what it builds. So, I would use this
  85. 2:55as my education and also to build a
  86. 2:58website, right? Chris's automations.com,
  87. 3:00whatever, anything. And then I would
  88. 3:03take the rest of the money and I would
  89. 3:05put it into ads, right? um preferably
  90. 3:08meta ads, Facebook ads, and I would
  91. 3:10target local businesses. Even though
  92. 3:12this is a global thing, if I live in
  93. 3:14Omaha, Nebraska, I could sell this to
  94. 3:15people in Tokyo. Doesn't matter. I'm
  95. 3:17going to put Radius around Omaha, and my
  96. 3:20ads are going to say, "I'm Chris and I
  97. 3:22can help put AI into your business. I'm
  98. 3:25going to use fifth grade words. I'm not
  99. 3:27going to use LLM. I'm not even going to
  100. 3:29say Chad GPT." I'm just going to say, "I
  101. 3:31will make your business more money or
  102. 3:33save your business money with AI." just
  103. 3:36a service business. And then I'll get on
  104. 3:38discovery calls with these business
  105. 3:39owners and I'll just start peppering
  106. 3:42them with questions about their
  107. 3:43business. And over time, I'm going to
  108. 3:45learn based on their answers what their
  109. 3:47problems are, what they're struggling
  110. 3:48with. Is it hiring? Is it payroll? Is it
  111. 3:50sales? Usually, it's going to be sales,
  112. 3:52right? And then I'm going to take this
  113. 3:54money over here, this $100, and go back
  114. 3:56to those apps and start building
  115. 3:58solutions for them for free just to kind
  116. 4:00of implement myself as an expert. And
  117. 4:02>> what are you going to charge them? I'm
  118. 4:04going to charge them between $500 and
  119. 4:06$5,000 upfront one time to implement it.
  120. 4:10And then I'm going to charge them 20% of
  121. 4:12that amount in an ongoing basis to
  122. 4:14maintain it and fix it as it breaks.
  123. 4:17Let's say there's a gutter cleaning
  124. 4:19business in Omaha, Nebraska that doesn't
  125. 4:22want to take calls after hours. He's
  126. 4:25with his wife watching Netflix and he
  127. 4:26knows that's a $3,000 job. He doesn't
  128. 4:29want to take it. So, it's going to
  129. 4:30voicemail and they're calling someone
  130. 4:32else that is taking it, right? So, I'm
  131. 4:34gonna build an AI voice agent for him,
  132. 4:36which sounds really intimidating. It
  133. 4:38feels like we have to have all these
  134. 4:39skills. You don't. You just need to
  135. 4:40prompt a couple tools a couple times.
  136. 4:42I'm going to build a voice agent for
  137. 4:43him. And then I'm going to tell him to
  138. 4:45call that agent as if he were a customer
  139. 4:47and say, "Hey, pretend you're a customer
  140. 4:48that needs gutter cleaning. You're
  141. 4:50calling at 9:30 p.m. and just see how it
  142. 4:52reacts." He's expecting there to be a
  143. 4:54delay. There's really not. He's
  144. 4:56expecting it to be dumb. There's not.
  145. 4:58He's expecting it to need to know all
  146. 5:00about his business. It doesn't, right?
  147. 5:02The AI knows about gutter cleaning
  148. 5:03businesses. Then he's sold, right?
  149. 5:06Charge him $3,000 for that. You build
  150. 5:09it. And then you charge them, call it
  151. 5:11500 or 600 a month to maintain it over
  152. 5:13time. And then the beautiful thing is
  153. 5:14you can go to every other gutter
  154. 5:15cleaning business in Omaha or anywhere
  155. 5:17and copy and paste that same app and
  156. 5:19sell it to them.
  157. 5:21>> Gotcha. So selling AI to small business
  158. 5:24owners who are in huge demand but don't
  159. 5:26have the time or think they need some
  160. 5:28sort of incredible
  161. 5:31expensive time and resource expensive
  162. 5:34competence to understand AI when
  163. 5:36actually AI is really really simple.
  164. 5:37>> Yes.
  165. 5:38>> And we see this play out over history
  166. 5:39where there's an initial arbitrage when
  167. 5:42a new technology comes into play. M in
  168. 5:44fact one of the call center jobs that I
  169. 5:47had when I was very very broke many many
  170. 5:48years ago when I was like 18 um or 19
  171. 5:52was calling businesses from the yellow
  172. 5:55pages and selling them Facebook ads.
  173. 5:58>> I would call a builder on a building
  174. 6:00site. I'd speak to Dave who's the owner
  175. 6:01of the building company and I'd explain
  176. 6:03Facebook ads to him over the phone and
  177. 6:05then I'd set them up for him and manage
  178. 6:08them for him on an ongoing basis and
  179. 6:10just send him the leads
  180. 6:11>> because he didn't understand Facebook
  181. 6:13ads. And these opportunities seem to
  182. 6:14exist
  183. 6:16>> for years when there's a new technology
  184. 6:18as as we're seeing with AI.
  185. 6:20>> But the thing is with that idea and with
  186. 6:21most ideas in my experience, we think
  187. 6:23there's a very limited time span. But if
  188. 6:25I were to start that business today and
  189. 6:27just start calling, it would work.
  190. 6:28>> Yeah, you could still do it. Yeah,
  191. 6:29>> I might have more competitors, but like
  192. 6:31it it doesn't matter. It would still
  193. 6:32work.
  194. 6:33>> Interestingly, the the issue back then
  195. 6:35was people didn't even know what
  196. 6:36Facebook ads were. So maybe it works to
  197. 6:38some degree better now. People have
  198. 6:40heard the word.
  199. 6:41>> Yeah. You were pretty early. Yeah, it
  200. 6:43was 2015 or something.
  201. 6:45>> So, it was it was quite rough, but it
  202. 6:47was a business nonetheless. Yeah.
  203. 6:48>> And there was 40 other people in the
  204. 6:49room with me in that call center doing
  205. 6:50it.
  206. 6:51>> Wow.
  207. 6:52>> So, that's the first idea you have.
  208. 6:53>> Yeah.
  209. 6:54>> What else? $500. What else could you do?
  210. 6:56Okay. Do you want a uh you want a
  211. 6:58physical business or an online business
  212. 6:59or does it not matter?
  213. 7:00>> What about a physical one?
  214. 7:01>> All right. For a physical one, I
  215. 7:03[snorts] would um have you heard of
  216. 7:06dropervicing?
  217. 7:07>> No. So the phrase drop shipping has kind
  218. 7:09of has a bad rap and some of it for good
  219. 7:11reason which is basically buying a
  220. 7:14product in China uh having a website for
  221. 7:17it and basically having the Chinese
  222. 7:19manufacturer or the supplier ship it
  223. 7:21directly to your customer so you don't
  224. 7:22have to take possession of the inventory
  225. 7:24right dropering is doing something
  226. 7:26similar with a service call it a let's
  227. 7:28call it a home service business right so
  228. 7:30in this case it would look like um a
  229. 7:32garage repair company that has a website
  230. 7:35that looks like they have a physical
  231. 7:36presence in a market, but is really just
  232. 7:38a lead genen factory, right? And so what
  233. 7:41you're doing is you're using Facebook or
  234. 7:43Google ads to generate leads, kind of
  235. 7:45like what you were doing on Facebook um
  236. 7:47for a local business, and then you're
  237. 7:49you're instead of just selling the leads
  238. 7:52for $20, you're actually doing more of
  239. 7:55the work, you're you're subcontracting
  240. 7:57out the work to a local business that
  241. 7:59actually repairs garage doors. They're
  242. 8:01the fulfillment arm of the business.
  243. 8:03You're the marketing arm of the
  244. 8:04business. So, in essence, you have a
  245. 8:06garage repair um business without
  246. 8:09actually having one. Like, you don't
  247. 8:10know anything about garage doors. You've
  248. 8:12never been on site. You're just drop
  249. 8:14servicing. You're you're sending all the
  250. 8:15work to a local company to do it.
  251. 8:17>> So, I a car repair company. I I put up a
  252. 8:20car repair website. I use Facebook ads
  253. 8:23to drive people towards it. When they
  254. 8:25click to buy my my car repair, I call a
  255. 8:29local car repair person and say, "Hey,
  256. 8:30I've got a customer here for you. Um can
  257. 8:33you take them?" I book the customer in.
  258. 8:35[clears throat]
  259. 8:35>> They handle the car repair. I take the
  260. 8:38payment and pay the garage. Yep. Great
  261. 8:40question. So, let's just say in your
  262. 8:42example, um, an oil change at at some at
  263. 8:45Bob's car repair that doesn't have a
  264. 8:46website is 40 bucks, which is a great
  265. 8:48price. Your website is clean. It's nice.
  266. 8:51They can pay with a few clicks and it's
  267. 8:5380 bucks, right? So, you call Bob one
  268. 8:55day and say, "Hey, congratulations. I
  269. 8:57have a lead and I don't have a lead. I
  270. 8:59have a customer. I want to send you $40.
  271. 9:01Her name is Mary. She's going to be
  272. 9:02coming in. She has a sequoia. She needs
  273. 9:04an oil change, right? And so Mary just
  274. 9:06interacts with you. She's trusting you
  275. 9:08with the money. You don't have to trust
  276. 9:10Bob with the money. Uh you just send Bob
  277. 9:12the money. You make even more margin
  278. 9:14than Bob makes. Right? It's a higher
  279. 9:16price service, but what you're charging
  280. 9:18for is the better UI, the better user
  281. 9:21experience, and having a a cleaner
  282. 9:22checkout method. And is there particular
  283. 9:25types of businesses you would target
  284. 9:26with that approach? Are you targeting
  285. 9:28ones that have a shitty customer
  286. 9:30experience, bad website, etc. in the
  287. 9:32home services like take your pick. Um
  288. 9:34they pretty much all do, right? Um there
  289. 9:37are some more established industries
  290. 9:38like roofing that don't have those
  291. 9:40issues uh because they have higher
  292. 9:41margins so they can afford better
  293. 9:43websites, but um they pretty much all
  294. 9:45have a bad experience. Any others at
  295. 9:48that $500 level that stand out to you?
  296. 9:50>> Yeah, I love um directory websites.
  297. 9:53>> What's that?
  298. 9:54>> So Trave Velocity is a directory
  299. 9:56website. Yelp is a directory website.
  300. 9:57It's a website with a list of things
  301. 10:00that helps people find answers to their
  302. 10:02questions more easily. So, another
  303. 10:04example of a website could be like
  304. 10:06Wisconsin um ice suppliers.com. I don't
  305. 10:10know if that's a website, right? Where
  306. 10:12if I need to go buy ice for my party,
  307. 10:14I'm going to Google ice near me. Um some
  308. 10:17categories are so niche or so unevenly
  309. 10:19distributed that Google Maps is not a
  310. 10:21good solution for it. Right? So, you're
  311. 10:23directed to these random directory
  312. 10:25websites that are just lists of other
  313. 10:27businesses. Um, and what people are
  314. 10:28doing is they're proactively creating
  315. 10:30their own directories by scraping uh
  316. 10:33let's say every dog park in Seattle,
  317. 10:35Washington, and putting them on a
  318. 10:37website and then they don't they don't
  319. 10:39even drive traffic to it. There's no
  320. 10:40paid ads. They just wait for Google and
  321. 10:43for SEO to do its trick. And it's very
  322. 10:45much an 8020 rule. you could kind of
  323. 10:48build the architecture for a directory
  324. 10:49website with replet or lovable and then
  325. 10:52you just copy and paste it right in
  326. 10:53different markets. Uh so the play here
  327. 10:55is to have dozens of directory websites
  328. 10:58and some of them make $0 a month, some
  329. 11:00make a few hundred, some make a few
  330. 11:01thousand, but it's very passive. It's
  331. 11:03like one of those rare things that's
  332. 11:05passive yet also doesn't need a ton of
  333. 11:08money to get to get started.
  334. 11:09>> Where's the money coming from? Where's
  335. 11:11the revenue?
  336. 11:12>> Great question. You can either do like
  337. 11:14display ads.
  338. 11:15>> What's a display ad? just a banner ad on
  339. 11:17a website.
  340. 11:18>> And are you having to go and sell that
  341. 11:19ad to someone that wants to buy it?
  342. 11:21>> You would just take Google's like ad
  343. 11:22network and just put it on your website.
  344. 11:25So you don't have to do anything.
  345. 11:26>> So you can just click a button and it'll
  346. 11:28add adverts to your website which you'll
  347. 11:29you'll then paid for.
  348. 11:31>> Yep. Or you could um you could just
  349. 11:33aggregate those leads. Like if we had
  350. 11:35dog parks in Seattle and you know we see
  351. 11:38on our Google Analytics that we're
  352. 11:39driving traffic to this one dog park,
  353. 11:41then we reach out to them proactively
  354. 11:43and say, "Hey, you notice all these
  355. 11:44customers you've been getting?" That's
  356. 11:45because I put you on my website. Would
  357. 11:47you like to pay $300 a year or a month
  358. 11:50or whatever for priority placement?
  359. 11:52Right? So, I like to call this
  360. 11:53permissionless marketing. Um, you're
  361. 11:55just proactively adding these businesses
  362. 11:57to a website. They have nothing to lose.
  363. 11:59You have nothing to lose. And then once
  364. 12:01you see traffic, then you reach out to
  365. 12:02them and say, "Hey, I've been bringing
  366. 12:04you more business. Would you like to
  367. 12:05start paying for that?"
  368. 12:06>> Interesting.
  369. 12:08And how much money can someone hope to
  370. 12:10make if they execute that strategy well
  371. 12:12in your view? What's realistic
  372. 12:13>> with a directory website? It could be
  373. 12:16tens of dollars a month and it could be
  374. 12:17tens of thousands of dollars a month.
  375. 12:19But we're not talking about building
  376. 12:20another Yelp or Travel Velocity. This is
  377. 12:22a zero employee business with that cost
  378. 12:25almost nothing, less than $100 to start.
  379. 12:28Um, but it's just a numbers game. You're
  380. 12:30not really going to know what directory
  381. 12:32really hits until months have passed and
  382. 12:34until you have a lot of surface area for
  383. 12:36these experiments.
  384. 12:39I hear a lot of people talking about
  385. 12:40vending machines online and I've always
  386. 12:43been really curious about that. People
  387. 12:44say you can make money from vending
  388. 12:46machines.
  389. 12:46>> Yeah. Could you do that with $500?
  390. 12:49Absolutely. So, if we were doing another
  391. 12:50physical business um I would go to
  392. 12:53Facebook Marketplace and I would find an
  393. 12:55existing vending machine uh for $3 to
  394. 12:59$400, right? That could be a snack or a
  395. 13:02drink vending machine. Um often times
  396. 13:04the expensive part of a vending machine
  397. 13:06is the credit card reader. It can often
  398. 13:08cost more or as much as the whole
  399. 13:09machine itself. And then I would use a
  400. 13:11$100 to stock the machine um with
  401. 13:14Costco. Costco Sam's Club is where all
  402. 13:16of these operators buy their snacks,
  403. 13:17believe it or not. And then I just need
  404. 13:19one business owner to give me a chance
  405. 13:21um to allow me to put the vending
  406. 13:23machine in his lobby. Let's say it's a
  407. 13:24car repair business. I can say, "Hey,
  408. 13:26I'll pay you 100 bucks a month." Or,
  409. 13:28"Hey, I'll split the revenue with you.
  410. 13:29I'll give you 30% of the revenue." And
  411. 13:31then once I have one, that's the hardest
  412. 13:33part. Now you have a track record. Now,
  413. 13:35you can say, "Hey, Bob's Auto Repair
  414. 13:36makes $700 a month passively cuz he let
  415. 13:39me put uh this vending machine there."
  416. 13:41This is a business that can be passive
  417. 13:42if you have an employee to restock it.
  418. 13:44That is the active part of the business
  419. 13:46is the restocking and the selling of new
  420. 13:48locations. Um, but if you have an ATM,
  421. 13:51then that becomes even easier because
  422. 13:53you can outsource all of the restocking
  423. 13:55to a cash management company.
  424. 13:57>> How much money could one person hope to
  425. 13:59make from a vending machine business?
  426. 14:00And have you ever run this business
  427. 14:01yourself?
  428. 14:02>> I have. I've actually been in a
  429. 14:04different part of the vertical. I've
  430. 14:05sold vending machines. I posted a a
  431. 14:07video to Instagram that got tens of
  432. 14:09millions of views and we started just
  433. 14:11importing those vending machines that I
  434. 14:13was talking about in the video uh and
  435. 14:15then selling them to entrepreneurs. But
  436. 14:17the level of revenue is I mean it's as
  437. 14:19much as you want to scale it. I have a
  438. 14:21friend in San Diego that makes seven
  439. 14:23figures a year uh on vending machines,
  440. 14:25just snacks and drinks. Is there an art
  441. 14:27to good vending machine placement or the
  442. 14:30right things to sell in the vending
  443. 14:31machine or anything else?
  444. 14:32>> Yeah, it's funny that you asked that
  445. 14:34because he said, you know, I'm in San
  446. 14:36Diego, people are health conscious here
  447. 14:38and he tested all these healthy concepts
  448. 14:40and they all failed. Like people want
  449. 14:42Doritos and Coke and Diet Coke, right?
  450. 14:44So that's all they have now. That's
  451. 14:46where the demand is. But the biggest
  452. 14:49needle mover on this is the location and
  453. 14:51it's a matter of testing. Back to
  454. 14:53testing, right? Testing what types of
  455. 14:54locations he landed on. um apartment
  456. 14:57complexes, like apartment lobbies. He
  457. 14:59tried auto repair shops and they just
  458. 15:01weren't high volume. But it's the type
  459. 15:03of business kind of like directories
  460. 15:05where if you have a 100 vending
  461. 15:06machines, um you're going to have 20 of
  462. 15:09them that make $3,000 a month each and
  463. 15:12then you're going to have 80 of them
  464. 15:13that make $400 a month each. But once
  465. 15:16you find out what types of locations are
  466. 15:18the most profitable, then you just start
  467. 15:20directly reaching out to those types of
  468. 15:22locations. If you love the DV CEO brand
