THE DRIVING LINE WHERE YOU SHOULD BE ON THE ROAD — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00okay so what we're going to have a look
- 0:03at is what we call the driving line when
- 0:05you're in a meeting situation for
- 0:08example going downwind High Street where
- 0:09it's a narrow road or even driving on a
- 0:12wide road and you meet them oncoming
- 0:13traffic sometimes it's a bit confusing
- 0:15as to what one you should take you might
- 0:17get too close to the curve or pot cars
- 0:19you might get too close to oncoming
- 0:20traffic yeah so we're gonna be this step
- 0:22by step and break it down so just
- 0:25imagine you're driving down a road and
- 0:27it's just like a normal residential
- 0:30street and there's no white line in the
- 0:32middle yeah where do you think would be
- 0:35your normal position to drive would it
- 0:39be near the curb
- 0:42would it be like that or would it be
- 0:49any
- 0:53if there's no one coming drop it yeah
- 0:55well it doesn't matter Paris or not it's
- 0:58just a normal residential Road there's
- 1:00no white line down the middle where do
- 1:02you think is the natural position for
- 1:03you to drive B you think it's B what do
- 1:07you think
- 1:08I think this fever thought Jose that I
- 1:09speak no no not see B motors I do 8 I
- 1:14understand them with it okay what's
- 1:17wrong I'll explain to you why if we look
- 1:21at the road yeah there's no white line
- 1:23our brain should divide the road in half
- 1:27imagine where the center is and then
- 1:30what we do we divide that half in half
- 1:33again and that gives us our center
- 1:37serves the center of our half of the
- 1:40road now thing is this should happen
- 1:44automatically and experienced drivers do
- 1:47it anyway yeah that's what is it that's
- 1:49what we call our driving line it's it's
- 1:50following this imaginary position so we
- 1:53like that down the road okay now when we
- 1:59come to a parked vehicle yeah obviously
- 2:02the road is now booked narrower yeah so
- 2:05we have to ask ourselves how do we just
- 2:07that path are driving line without
- 2:10vehicle
- 2:12so today Mike
- 2:14doesn't like lining the road what we do
- 2:18is we look at the gap from the park
- 2:20vehicle to the curb yeah we divide that
- 2:24in half we divide out half in half and
- 2:30that gives us our driving line now in
- 2:32this instance we've gone a little bit
- 2:34over the white line but this is the key
- 2:36as long as it's safe to do so and the
- 2:39oncoming vehicles got enough space to
- 2:41pass as long as both if you can pass
- 2:44each other safety that's okay you may
- 2:47need a right indicator because you're
- 2:49going over the white line and it's a
- 2:50meeting situation if it's a very wide
- 2:52road you don't need a right indicator
- 2:53but if it's a if it's a narrower
- 2:55situation as long as you can both pass
- 2:56safely it's important that you indicate
- 2:59tell the oncoming vehicle what you're
- 3:01thinking you'll obviously have to move
- 3:02out before you give you some help and
- 3:03that's okay as long as there is room on
- 3:05his side there's all this room for him
- 3:06to move over or her to move over and
- 3:08give you some more room yeah so if you
- 3:12imagine our driving minus one from this
- 3:14position together yeah that's the
- 3:18imaginary line that we follow
- 3:19can you see how
- 3:22it's important to come out learning by
- 3:24the time you get to this car you want to
- 3:28be straight yeah coming up nice and
- 3:33early you don't want to be coming out at
- 3:36an angle because by coming out at an
- 3:38angle it takes you like that that's not
- 3:42an AP and that's what you would in your
- 3:43same ik yeah you're swinging out too
- 3:45wide because this is the way you were
- 3:48visualizing it you're coming out late
- 3:49even / cycles in fact I mean coming out
- 3:51ladies swinging out too wide when you
- 3:53want to be straight by the time you get
- 3:57to the back of that vehicle your bust
- 3:58wants to be straight and have a gap of 1
- 4:01meter on the lecture if it's a tighter
- 4:04situation you have to be slower then you
- 4:06don't need 1 meter here maybe one foot
- 4:08if it's it's a very very time you know
- 4:10sometimes one and a half foot maybe two
- 4:13feet but it depends on your speed speed
- 4:15and position are linked so the tighter
- 4:17is the slow you go the wider is the
- 4:19faster so that's very important so that
- 4:25gives us our driving line
- 4:27halten outside of the way
- 4:29what about
- 4:35[Music]
- 4:37the other southern road we're driving
- 4:40along there's nothing on our side of the
- 4:42road but there's a vehicle coming
- 4:44towards us now once again with
- 4:48experience you guys should realize that
- 4:50this vehicle is going to come over the
- 4:52white line the roads wide enough both of
- 4:55you can pass safely yeah he's gonna see
- 4:58the opportunity he's gonna see that
- 4:59you've got room he's gonna come on yeah
- 5:04so it's important to realize it's not
- 5:06when you see this vehicle that you have
- 5:09to think about adjusting your position
- 5:11it's when you see a parked vehicle
- 5:15because as soon as you know there's a
- 5:17part vehicle there you know that
- 5:18anything coming towards you it's going
- 5:20to come over the white line so for
- 5:22example this was on a bend
- 5:28and there's a vehicle here
- 5:34you can't see that vehicle yet but you
- 5:37can see this car here you have to adjust
- 5:40your position before the bend because
- 5:41anything coming around that corner will
- 5:43come over the white line and so what I
- 5:45would do is I would just come a little
- 5:47bit to the left not too much and just be
- 5:50ready
- 5:50is anything coming around the corner the
- 5:55both of us to pasture and this is where
- 5:57I said to you before when you look at
- 5:59the road we have the near field which is
- 6:01the area when we're driving about 10 15
- 6:03miles an hour in front of us we have the
- 6:05mid field which is when we're driving at
- 6:07speeds about 30 miles
- 6:16the near-field the midfield in the far
- 6:18field we've also got the left-hand side
- 6:19of the rotor the right-hand side of the
- 6:21road and what tends to happen is if
- 6:22you're checking the left no too much all
- 6:24your focus and intention is on your side
- 6:27of the road it's on things on the left
- 6:28it's on things in your in your lane yeah
- 6:32but what we have to do is we have to
- 6:33scan the opposite side of the road more
- 6:35because it's important to see things on
- 6:37the opposite side of the road because
- 6:39that's going to affect the oncoming
- 6:40traffic and push it into our path and
- 6:42that's where both of you could improve
- 6:45one coming side of the road so in this
- 6:50instance we've got the vehicle parts
- 6:51over there we no need to move over so
- 6:55that helped the oncoming vehicle to come
- 6:56through another scenario so in that
- 6:59situation you slow down as well because
- 7:01if it's a larger vehicle yeah I miss my
- 7:03food just repeat the mean point you
- 7:06don't brake on yeah the the relationship
- 7:08between speed and position it's really
- 7:11critical it's moving really yeah there
- 7:13are only two things you can do when
- 7:15you're driving you can either move left
- 7:16or right speed up or slow down there are
- 7:18only only really two parameters or
- 7:22either that you're changing all the time
- 7:24yet if you're letting to fly an aircraft
- 7:26like helicopter you know what you're
- 7:27controlling in four or five different
- 7:29axis actually four axes but you're
- 7:31drumming in five with the engine speed
- 7:33you're controlling five different
- 7:34parameters and you have to balance all
- 7:36five at the same time here we're only
- 7:38worrying about steering and speed so
- 7:40opposition and speed we have to blend
- 7:43them and that's the art of a great
- 7:44driver although there are two very
- 7:46simple controls the art just like a cook
- 7:49I suppose as a blending blending those
- 7:52two controls to produce something
- 7:53artistic this is how we blend them so
- 7:59you can see that sometimes when you're
- 8:00braking is a bit heavy or your
- 8:02steering's not quite right it's a bit
- 8:03jerky or steering toward you're too late
- 8:05how that blend
- 8:07you can see when you go to the meeting
- 8:08situation and you're too close to the
- 8:10park vehicle too fast how we're not
- 8:12blending two controls
- 8:16so it's just imagine now we've got a
- 8:18little bit more going on so we have a
- 8:22parked vehicle here a parked vehicle
- 8:26here another party vehicle here yeah
- 8:33typical residential side road meeting
- 8:39situation yeah so there might be
- 8:45oncoming vehicles first thing we have to
- 8:48ask ourselves is where do we want to
- 8:49meet them yeah you always want to meet
- 8:51at the widest part of the road so for
- 8:53example if we were here right and we see
- 9:02a vehicle here it's better to slow down
- 9:05let that vehicle coming yeah and we can
- 9:09meet them somewhere about here before we
- 9:12actually go in before we go into the
- 9:15into the narrowing on the road with the
- 9:17park vehicles are it's always better to
- 9:19meet at wide spot the road now when we
- 9:21go down with high street from say from
- 9:26hospital Bridge Road
- 9:29we've got lots of things going on but
- 9:30before we get to Luca Maestri itself
- 9:32there's a stretch of bird which is quite
- 9:34wide there there's a key part and then
- 9:35we have a stretch where there's lots of
- 9:37cars you look down that road and you see
- 9:40that there's lots of parked cars and
- 9:43there's vehicles coming towards you it's
- 9:44meant to hold back it's bernal to enter
- 9:46the narrow situation until those
- 9:48vehicles have come through you work for
- 9:51a reasonable amount of time
- 9:52if however after waiting and waiting and
- 9:54waiting you have to at some point go
- 9:55than you think right harm another time
- 9:57this and what we do then is we time it
- 10:01and this is again important it's an
- 10:04important it's important that we blend
- 10:07steering in and speed yeah so he said to
- 10:11ourselves right because the vehicle
- 10:13coming towards us yeah you may be coming
- 10:15out I obviously don't want to need to be
- 10:18here because the two vehicles and now
- 10:22going head-to-head yep
- 10:24he's coming out that way I'm doing so
- 10:26what I'd rather do I'd rather slow down
- 10:31pull back here let him get straight yeah
- 10:35now I'm gonna be going in yeah
- 10:39and now the two of us can meet like that
- 10:43so we're steering away from each other
- 10:45yeah he can steering I can steering yeah
- 10:47so it's important to time these things
- 10:49pregnant
- 10:50so we're blending
- 10:52speed
- 10:54so that the vehicles aren't going head
- 10:56to head who actually steering away from
- 10:58each other yeah in aviation
- 11:01they call it deconfliction whenever two
- 11:03aircraft are heading towards each other
- 11:04the pilots have to deconflict they have
- 11:06to take an alternative course to steer
- 11:08away from each other yeah air traffic
- 11:10that's the primary over there traffic
- 11:12controlling here we're D conflicting
- 11:13with steering away from each other
- 11:14yeah so timing is important so we've got
- 11:17to that stage there yeah you're coming
- 11:19vehicles now passed yeah and we see a
- 11:24vehicle coming from here now yeah now
- 11:26rather than slowing down too much which
- 11:29is sometimes what happens yeah try and
- 11:31keep the vehicle moving try and get it
- 11:34into this position here because the
- 11:37quickly you get into this position the
- 11:39quicker this vehicle can come to here
- 11:41yeah he can't come here if you're solare
- 11:44so try and keep the vehicle moving I'm
- 11:47not singing accelerate on this it's a
- 11:48long stretch but try and keep the
- 11:50vehicle running don't brake too early
- 11:51and get your vehicle in so now if you
- 11:53can get to this position here and you
- 11:55can start to steer out here and that's
- 11:57why I say to you Sam so to keep it
- 11:58moving keep it moving keep it moving it
- 12:00because what you're not seeing is until
- 12:02you pull your bus in that bus or that
- 12:05truck can't come out yeah so it's
- 12:07important to see that yeah and then when
- 12:09you get to here if you need to stop stop
- 12:12if you can't keep it rolling keep it
- 12:13rolling here so again with blending
- 12:15speed and position does that make sense
- 12:19yeah okay so you can see what we have to
- 12:21achieve and obviously lastly we have to
- 12:23come out and there's another vehicle
- 12:25coming towards us again don't steer out
- 12:30your head
- 12:31right here didn't come to make it a
- 12:33position
- 12:35he's much pulled away you can get
- 12:38straight straight so by the time you
- 12:43meet him he's going straight and your
- 12:45gates right here you're not heading
- 12:46towards each other
- 12:47remember when we go down hospital Ridge
- 12:49Road we've got those three bus stops
- 12:51that we always do the three lane by bus
- 12:53stops yeah that is a great place to
- 12:54practice this because when you come out
- 12:56of the bus stops every time you come out
- 12:58an angled star and it's not so much
- 13:00about steering yes you've got to steer
- 13:02around the pub people steer around the
- 13:03islands but you could have time it so
- 13:05that as you come out you're not going
- 13:07head-to-head with another vehicle yeah
- 13:09okay
- 13:10let's just have another look at some
- 13:12some things to do the driving line going
- 13:18around traffic islands so we've got a
- 13:24situation here where we've got traffic
- 13:27island
- 13:35a couple of pop calls
- 13:40now I said to you before that the art of
- 13:42driving a bus really is the realities of
- 13:44Melissa's who hold it straight here
- 13:46after a while you learn how to steer on
- 13:49corners you learn how to position the
- 13:51back wheels and your steering improves
- 13:53but the realize is to be able to hold
- 13:55the vehicle straight not to wander and
- 13:57hold that driving line that we just
- 13:58looked out normally you'd want to keep
- 14:01the vehicle straight as possible we're
- 14:02going through traffic ideas but here
- 14:05that's not possible we've got to park
- 14:07people to either side if you try and
- 14:09keep it straight we're gonna get very
- 14:11close
- 14:15they're very close the island very close
- 14:20for the second part vehicle yeah so in
- 14:24this situation we have to take a
- 14:26different approach you have to try and
- 14:29widen the gap you have to try and create
- 14:32some space now again be aware of what's
- 14:35coming towards you there's traffic
- 14:37coming towards you from here you have to
- 14:39let them pass before you do this but
- 14:41what I would do here is that I would
- 14:43look at the gap like this yeah I would
- 14:46imagine if I go in and diagonally yeah
- 14:53rather than the gap being very narrow
- 14:55now the gap is actually quite wide yeah
- 14:58now in order to do this it means you've
- 15:00got to slow the vehicle down again
- 15:01you've got to blend your speed with your
- 15:04steering yeah I would come out a little
- 15:06bit wider I would steer in a bit sharper
- 15:11are we getting a vehicles straight I
- 15:14would come out earlier and I would have
- 15:19to go a bit wider here yeah if you get
- 15:22to here remember to look for the
- 15:23oncoming traffic if there's any oncoming
- 15:25traffic let them pass and then come out
- 15:27but you can see what I've done it
- 15:28effectively made the road wider yeah and
- 15:31that's where fast hands slow bus fast
- 15:35hands are important yeah so sometimes
- 15:39when you're driving you see a situation
- 15:41like this and you actually find straight
- 15:43line it what he was saying about the
- 15:45roundabouts earlier is absolutely true
- 15:47as well sometimes you do tend to
- 15:48straight lines around the battle
- 15:50remember yesterday when it's they were
- 15:52now needed the progress check with you
- 15:54I covet mini one about
- 15:57exactly same reason
- 16:00came up surrounded
- 16:02straight as possible you can obviously
- 16:04should musician to the right more follow
- 16:07the shape of the road so you can see we
- 16:10have to do that it's very real what we
- 16:12have to exaggerate the steering this
- 16:13much to steer out of our vehicles but
- 16:14there's one place and Chizik on the III
- 16:17route near Chizik school where there's
- 16:20always part b equals an either side of
- 16:22assignment and you have to do they have
- 16:23to bring the vehicle speed right down
