Full transcript
- 0:00hey guys gabriel varga here today by
- 0:02request i want to take you through the
- 0:04do's
- 0:05and the don'ts of head movement in
- 0:07kickboxing so you can do this
- 0:10but not end up like this
- 0:24the video today guys is happening
- 0:25because one of the subscribers to the
- 0:27channel
- 0:28commented ask for this video that's why
- 0:30it's happening if you have your own
- 0:31request throw it down in the comments
- 0:33below
- 0:34when we're talking about breaking down
- 0:35head movement it's very important to
- 0:37remember
- 0:38you may have seen people like lordzilla
- 0:40who slip shots you see guys like
- 0:42anderson silva who walk back with their
- 0:44chin up
- 0:44and do all sorts of crazy things i am
- 0:46talking today
- 0:47about the basics what should you be
- 0:50doing if you are
- 0:50new intermediate or advanced but you're
- 0:52not a kickboxing
- 0:54phenom or somebody who just naturally
- 0:56has crazy good eyesight
- 0:58there are always ways to break rules for
- 1:00example if you see manny pacquiao
- 1:02i'll switch to southpaw here if you see
- 1:04manny pacquiao punch slow motion when he
- 1:06gets in the combo
- 1:07he's just going like this hands coming
- 1:09back to his hip
- 1:10so low but because he's popping the
- 1:13shots out so fast he gets away with it
- 1:15would i recommend anybody punch like him
- 1:17when they're learning absolutely not so
- 1:18today is the same thing i'm going to
- 1:20show you three ways
- 1:21to slip three basic slips that are very
- 1:23effective and three things
- 1:24you 100 don't want to do if you're new
- 1:27to the sport or even intermediate but
- 1:28does that mean
- 1:29that some fighters don't get away with
- 1:31it no 100 not there are some guys who
- 1:33can just break the rules they can bend
- 1:35the rules they can
- 1:36snap the rules and they get away with it
- 1:37i mean me myself i am not a natural
- 1:40slipper i prefer to just have my hands
- 1:41here and be very safe as opposed to
- 1:44you know slip a shot and then
- 1:45accidentally eat the second shot because
- 1:47i wasn't ready to do
- 1:49a second slip so we're gonna break down
- 1:50what you should do
- 1:52and what you probably shouldn't do but
- 1:53bear in mind there are people who
- 1:55can do these things you shouldn't do
- 1:57they're just so good at slipping that
- 1:58they can get away with that before we
- 2:00get to our three points of dues and our
- 2:02three points of do not
- 2:03if you guys haven't make sure you get
- 2:05subscribed if you're enjoying the video
- 2:07give it a like and we'll keep rolling
- 2:08along here let's start with the things
- 2:10you absolutely
- 2:11should do the things that you should
- 2:12drill the things that you should get
- 2:13very very good at
- 2:15and starting with point number one i
- 2:16want to go to the most basic which is
- 2:17slipping straight punches so you should
- 2:19absolutely yes be slipping straight
- 2:21punches hands are up wherever you have
- 2:23them
- 2:24if you see a straight punch come and you
- 2:26can get your head off
- 2:27the center line or the other way off the
- 2:29center line
- 2:30that is super effective now if you're
- 2:32more advanced as you get your head off
- 2:34the center line
- 2:34you actually throw your own shot and
- 2:36i've talked about that in our back to
- 2:38basics
- 2:39intermediate you can check that out
- 2:40there slipping and throwing your own
- 2:42shot but this is absolutely something
- 2:44that you should get good at
- 2:45your knees bend very slightly you drop
- 2:48your weight over one side
- 2:50and the punch swings by or misses your
- 2:53head from here at this point you're free
- 2:54to either
- 2:55engage closer close the gap move away
- 2:58or throw your own counter shot slipping
- 3:01a jab slipping across this is something
- 3:02that works
- 3:03for boxers 100 you have to know how to
- 3:06do it there's no question
- 3:07mma you really should know how to do it
- 3:09you don't have to do it in kickboxing
- 3:11but i would recommend you learn it
- 3:13especially if you have somebody who has
- 3:14longer arms than you you're not always
- 3:15going to be the person with the longest
- 3:17arms
- 3:17somebody throws a punch and you just
- 3:19move your head off that center line it
- 3:21won't come
- 3:22right away it takes drilling it takes
- 3:24time to learn and then to execute
- 3:26but start implementing it in your shadow
- 3:28boxing your drilling
- 3:29it's something that you 100 percent
- 3:31should know how to do
- 3:32now number two that i want to talk about
- 3:34what you should know how to do is also
- 3:36slipping hooks now this is very
- 3:37different than slipping hooks for boxing
- 3:39and we're going to talk about that when
- 3:40we get to the do not
- 3:42but when i slip a hook when i'm rolling
- 3:45under the shot the most important thing
- 3:48for me to keep in mind
- 3:49is i have like with me with my spiky
- 3:51hair it's perfect when the punch comes
- 3:53i almost want my hair to make contact
- 3:55with the glove
- 3:56i don't want to go too low i just keep
- 3:58it short
- 3:59and i just do the minimal amount of
- 4:01effort the minimal amount of movement
- 4:04required and because it's kickboxing
- 4:05it's very important that we always keep
- 4:07our hands tight we don't want to slip
- 4:08with our hands down so the hands
- 4:10stay locked to the head normally i stay
- 4:12up here which is why i don't
- 4:14end up blocking too often because
- 4:16slipping down this way with these hands
- 4:18really high
- 4:18just makes your head that much bigger
- 4:20and becomes that much harder to slip
- 4:22but if you are somebody who likes your
- 4:23hands down here it's very easy for you
- 4:26to roll back and forth and get under
- 4:28those hook shots slipping straight
- 4:30punches slipping hooks
- 4:31are both essential to kickboxing maybe
- 4:34not at the lower level but as you get
- 4:36higher even for me who i'm not a big
- 4:37slipper i have used it
- 4:38time and time again in fights and it's
- 4:41just
- 4:42so effective when somebody's coming with
- 4:44a lot of pressure punching somebody
- 4:46off their guard feels good it feels like
- 4:48you're landing but when somebody starts
- 4:50moving your head and you start missing
- 4:52shots
- 4:53it's exhausting it's frustrating it's
- 4:56demoralizing it's something that as the
- 4:58aggressor you just don't want to see
- 5:00in your opponent so start learning how
- 5:01to slip the straight punches and slip
- 5:03the hooks
- 5:04and finally guys the last thing that you
- 5:05should be doing if you're trying to
- 5:07implement head movement in kickboxing
- 5:09is learning to fade back now again i
- 5:11broke this down in detail in the
- 5:12intermediate
- 5:13back to basics breakdown but we'll go
- 5:15through it again here i'll show you some
- 5:17clips of how this can be effectively
- 5:19used
- 5:19and we'll go through just a few of the
- 5:21finer points and the nice thing about
- 5:23this fade back a nice thing about
- 5:25tipping your head back is it doesn't
- 5:27matter if it's a round kick
- 5:29a front kick that's not something i'd
- 5:31use it usually use it for
- 5:32or spinning hook kick really any kick at
- 5:35head level
- 5:35if they're aiming to actually land here
- 5:37and not way back here
- 5:39you getting your head out of the way is
- 5:41going to be effective for
- 5:42all those shots so you don't have to
- 5:44make the distinction as somebody starts
- 5:46kicking at head level
- 5:47between a side kick a front kick a round
- 5:50kick a hook kick
- 5:51if you can just get your head off the
- 5:52center line or sorry back off that
- 5:54stationary spot where your head normally
- 5:55sits if you can get back
- 5:56off that you are going to be out of the
- 5:58way and then after that it's just a
- 6:00matter of how you follow up with it
- 6:02and making sure your hands are in the
- 6:03correct position so as i fade my head
- 6:06back there's a couple things i'm trying
- 6:08to do here number one
- 6:09i'm trying to make sure my head doesn't
- 6:11go way back past my heels
- 6:13and my hips don't end up impossibly far
- 6:16in front of my head because now once
- 6:18i've done this it's hard to get back
- 6:20so for me i try to keep the whole head
- 6:22protected my hands start here
- 6:23my shoulders are fairly square as i fade
- 6:26back i
- 6:26turn sideways i use the front shoulder
- 6:29to protect my head on this side
- 6:31and this hand stays up nice and high the
- 6:33front arm becomes a counterbalance
- 6:35to get me back up if i keep both hands
- 6:37up here for me it's very difficult with
- 6:39my
- 6:40core and back strength to lift myself
- 6:42back up it doesn't feel
- 6:43strong enough so getting that front arm
- 6:45down makes all the difference to being
- 6:48able to chamber
- 6:49back up very quick or if i wanted to i
- 6:51could just hang out here
- 6:52but as soon as i bring my hands up and i
- 6:54turn back to square
- 6:56now from here this is so uncomfortable
- 6:58so getting that little turn
- 6:59that little drop bend through the back
- 7:01knee that makes all the difference
- 7:03in this fade back for head shots being
- 7:06so effective and working
- 7:07so well making it very comfortable for
- 7:09you so for our do's for head movement in
- 7:12kickboxing we have
- 7:13get the head off the center line slip
- 7:15the straight punches roll
- 7:16under the hook shots and fade back on
- 7:19any head kick
- 7:20i could go much more in depth on
- 7:21slipping and rolling and such but we're
- 7:23sticking right now with
- 7:24beginner intermediate sort of area the
- 7:26basics that you should be working
- 7:28if you are wanting to implement proper
- 7:30head movement in kickboxing now let's
- 7:32turn this around entirely and go
- 7:34what should you absolutely not do in
- 7:36kickboxing in regards to head movement
- 7:38again unless you're somebody who's just
- 7:41you know goes against the grain and you
- 7:42can get away with it some people
- 7:44can some people are exceptional in
- 7:45certain areas and they can break the
- 7:47mold
- 7:47break the rules but we're talking about
- 7:49for the average person here or maybe
- 7:51somebody even might as myself i do not
- 7:53break these rules that i'm about to
- 7:55share with you so first guys i want to
- 7:56talk about the punches the slipping of
- 7:58punches that we've already covered
- 8:00number one i've seen so many people get
- 8:02knocked out with a shot and it ends
- 8:03very badly somebody throws a straight
- 8:05punch at you you slip down to the side i
- 8:08want to talk about the mistakes
- 8:09here that a lot of people make and
- 8:11remembering in kickboxing
- 8:13that the legs are involved if it's
- 8:14boxing i can have my hands here
- 8:16and i can slip way down here and i'm not
- 8:19worried about any repercussions of
- 8:20something coming
- 8:21upwards it's just the punches that i'm
- 8:23worried about but with kickboxing
- 8:25because somebody can throw the punch try
- 8:28and get you to
- 8:29fade out that way and if they're going
- 8:31too low if i repeatedly see somebody
- 8:33slipping my shot too low i'll throw this
- 8:35as a fake
- 8:36and then have them come right into my
- 8:37head kick so very important when you
- 8:40have straight punches
- 8:41coming at your head and you want to slip
- 8:43you want to stay very tight
- 8:45very tight to the hand and the outside
- 8:47of the arm so it's like this
- 8:49not like this so that you don't eat that
- 8:52head kick
- 8:53and that right away brings us to the
- 8:54next point when we slip we don't want
- 8:56our hands to drop because now the entire
- 8:59head is open for the round kick i've
- 9:01seen people do
- 9:01amazing slips and oh they're here and
- 9:04then bam they're knocked out with a head
- 9:05kick
- 9:06because their weight is moving directly
- 9:08into that kick
- 9:09as it comes up two forces meeting is
- 9:12terrible so whenever i slip this is my
- 9:14this is my rule for myself whenever i
- 9:16slip to the outside of a straight punch
- 9:18i have my hand at temple level if i slip
- 9:21the other side
- 9:22still have my hand at tempo level i'm
- 9:23always protected from that idea that
- 9:25somebody's going to go one
- 9:26and two or one and two the kick is
- 9:29coming after that is the big danger
- 9:31on slipping the straight shots you want
- 9:34to be aware of that kick coming up now
- 9:36same idea with the hooks before i was
- 9:38talking about when you
- 9:39slip or you roll under a hook you want
- 9:42to have almost your hair
- 9:44get brushed by the punch if i go really
- 9:47down low and now the shot's way up here
- 9:49yes i slipped it a lot more but in
- 9:51kickboxing
- 9:52the person comes here and then they
- 9:54drive the knee up and you have to be
- 9:56very very aware of dropping too far and
- 9:58then eating a head knee
- 10:00it has to be small so after they throw
- 10:03the shot and they come to throw their
- 10:04knee
- 10:05you're already back up here and they
- 10:07have to really get their knee high to
- 10:09get to your chin level
- 10:10and hopefully you see it coming and you
- 10:11can block from there so very
- 10:13small rolls on your hook shots trying to
- 10:16have the arm
- 10:17brush over the hair so important make
- 10:19sure
- 10:20your chin still stays tucked you come
- 10:22down
- 10:24and you just get that nice little roll
- 10:26happening and again we've talked about
- 10:28this
- 10:28in the back to basics i believe the
- 10:30beginner i'll link that one up there you
- 10:31can hopefully
- 10:32find that all the details on how you
- 10:33should be slipping but a definite
- 10:35do not on head movement in kickboxing
- 10:38is leave yourself exposed for kicks or
- 10:41knees
- 10:42after you slip a punch right next i want
- 10:44to talk about fading back on the round
- 10:46kick and we talked about this already we
- 10:47just said yes
- 10:48absolutely fade back on the round kick
- 10:50it works so well
- 10:51but if you do this wrong es rico
- 10:53verhoven proof i mean this guy
- 10:55is a crazy glory champion i don't think
- 10:58he's lost in glory
- 11:00and probably close to 10 years but he
- 11:02did lose in china as
- 11:04he saw the round kick go by he just got
- 11:06a little lazy with his bottom hand
- 11:08and then the spinning back fist comes
- 11:10around and plunk you're down so as we
- 11:12fade back
- 11:13utilize this technique for sure but
- 11:14never fade back with two hands low
- 11:17that's an absolute
- 11:18do not there are people that can get
- 11:20away with it one of my opponents lord
- 11:21zilla he constantly
- 11:23fades back like that his hands are just
- 11:25dangling down
- 11:26but it's because his head movement is
- 11:28above and beyond almost
- 11:30anybody in the kickboxing muay thai
- 11:31world that he can get away with it
- 11:33everybody else as rico proved should be
- 11:36slipping
- 11:37and not having this hand down here this
- 11:39leaves the whole upper head open
- 11:41it should be right up here when you slip
- 11:42you come there
- 11:44and now you're safe from somebody coming
- 11:47one
- 11:47you think you're protected and then they
- 11:49come around spinning elbow or spinning
- 11:51back fist
- 11:51whenever you fade back on a head level
- 11:54kick
- 11:55remember you need to protect both sides
- 11:57of the head one high
- 11:59one shoulder high from there we're
- 12:00protected from here i can utilize this
- 12:03amazing feedback technique
- 12:04without the repercussions of a follow-up
- 12:06spinning technique
- 12:07or anything else stupid i've seen guys
- 12:09in heavyweight i think potter's even
- 12:10done it before
- 12:11where he kicks he gets angry and he just
- 12:13throws a sloppy spinning back face but
- 12:16if your hands are down after you fade it
- 12:17you're getting clipped you might be
- 12:19going down and finally guys you will see
- 12:21many many people who are very good at
- 12:23head movement they'll start here they'll
- 12:25be moving around
- 12:26they'll drop their hands they'll fade
- 12:28they'll fade they'll walk
- 12:29way way back with their hands down
- 12:31constantly evading shots
- 12:33this is fine if you're a very high level
- 12:35person but dropping both hands
- 12:37and keeping your chin high is just
- 12:40asking
- 12:41to get ko'd anderson silva showed us
- 12:43this back in one of his ufc losses
- 12:44against chris weidman
- 12:46he was granted just being very cocky if
- 12:48he would have not been cocky it probably
- 12:50wouldn't have happened i do understand
- 12:51that
- 12:52but still it's a prime example if you
- 12:54want to drop your hands
- 12:55which i don't recommend in the first
- 12:57place if you're going to be doing any
- 12:58slipping at all
- 13:00chin tucks you don't want your chin up
- 13:02here because now instead of getting hit
- 13:04in the forehead
- 13:05you're getting caught in the jaw that is
- 13:07a knockout point
- 13:08so much easier to get knocked out get
- 13:09your head rattled on the jaw area as
- 13:12opposed to the forehead so whenever i'm
- 13:14slipping whenever i'm backing up even if
- 13:16my hands went from here
- 13:17down to here and i'm working lots of
- 13:19movement my chin is tucked that is an
- 13:21absolute
- 13:22must in kickboxing you never ever
- 13:25want to have your chin high in this
- 13:27sport so do not
- 13:29for slipping is having your hands low
- 13:32your chin
- 13:32high and walking backwards waiting for
- 13:35this punch
- 13:36to land i know you're not actually
- 13:37waiting but it's going to be coming at
- 13:39some point some people get away with it
- 13:41you know do some sparring rounds will
- 13:42get away with it they'll get away with
- 13:43it we'll get away with it and then one
- 13:45day you get clipped
- 13:46and right away you're going oh that was
- 13:48a mistake
- 13:49don't let it happen to you you can be
- 13:50moving around you can have your hands
- 13:52here somebody starts to throw you just
- 13:53like
- 13:54like that punched down on the ground all
- 13:56done it should be
- 13:58i'm here i'm moving around i fade back
- 14:00my chin
- 14:01stays down if my hands drop it's an
- 14:03automatic must of head movement
- 14:05in kickboxing all right guys as i said i
- 14:07could go into so much depth on this
- 14:09whole subject
- 14:10we're talking probably a 10 minute video
- 14:12here this could be stretched out to a
- 14:14half an hour an hour a whole class
- 14:16on it so i hope you guys enjoyed this
- 14:18small concise version
- 14:19just keep in mind that it's not
- 14:21everything on the topic
- 14:22if you guys enjoyed the video give it a
- 14:24like get subscribed do me a big favor
- 14:26share the video if you think other
- 14:27people are going to enjoy it are going
- 14:29to learn from it guys i've been sharing
- 14:30a lot of
- 14:31technique videos lately other fighters
- 14:33technique breaking them down
- 14:34talking about fight stories i haven't
- 14:36got to as many
- 14:38training videos workout videos as i
- 14:39would like but keep in mind there are
- 14:41still many of them up there
- 14:42try them out do them a second time as i
- 14:44always say guys train hard
- 14:46and i'll see you back here soon for
- 14:47another video
