- 0:17hey guys welcome back to my channel so
- 0:19happy to have you here for another
- 0:21video today and today we are going to be
- 0:23talking about
- 0:24diane downs and this case
- 0:27is truly i don't even have words i
- 0:31really don't
- 0:32i'm surprised that i haven't covered
- 0:33this on my channel yet
- 0:35i've covered it on my podcast but it's
- 0:37one of those cases that has always
- 0:39intrigued me scared me frustrated me
- 0:43but also fascinated me because diane
- 0:45downs
- 0:46is up there with some of the most
- 0:48bizarre
- 0:49people out there some of the most
- 0:51genuinely evil
- 0:53people out there i think she's right up
- 0:55there with casey anthony
- 0:57jodi arias she is rotten to the core
- 1:00and i'm honestly surprised that more
- 1:01people don't talk about this case that
- 1:03it's not more
- 1:04well-known to the average person because
- 1:06it is truly one of the craziest true
- 1:08crime stories
- 1:09out there so if you haven't yet heard of
- 1:10diane downs get ready
- 1:12because this is going to be a wild one
- 1:14let's go ahead and get started
- 1:16she was born on august 7th 1955 in
- 1:18phoenix arizona
- 1:19to her parents wellesley and willardeen
- 1:22frederiksen
- 1:22she had three younger siblings and diane
- 1:24grew up in a very
- 1:26conservative home very strict home they
- 1:29also moved around a lot for wellesley's
- 1:31work
- 1:32he ended up finally working in the post
- 1:34office so they ended up settling in
- 1:36phoenix when she was about 11.
- 1:38and eventually she attended moon valley
- 1:40high school up until high school
- 1:42diane was a pretty well behaved kid she
- 1:44was okay
- 1:45but when she got into high school she
- 1:46really started rebelling against her
- 1:48strike conservative parents
- 1:50this mainly seems to be driven by a need
- 1:52to feel accepted by the popular crowd
- 1:54she wasn't really feeling true
- 1:56acceptance and love at her house so
- 1:58she really was seeking it elsewhere at
- 2:00the age of 14 she started going by the
- 2:02name
- 2:03diane also around this time she cut her
- 2:05hair really short
- 2:06dyed it bleach blonde and started
- 2:08dressing pretty edgy
- 2:10just trying to be more in style for the
- 2:12time and diane was described
- 2:14by a lot of people as boy crazy and was
- 2:17always looking for the next person to
- 2:19date
- 2:19and this directly went against her
- 2:21parents rules she was not allowed to
- 2:23date yet
- 2:24but she did it anyway and eventually she
- 2:26started dating this 16 year old boy who
- 2:28lived pretty close to her
- 2:29and his name was steve downes and of
- 2:31course when her parents found out they
- 2:33didn't approve of it at all but that did
- 2:35not stop
- 2:36diane she really liked this guy steve
- 2:38but after graduation
- 2:39they went separate ways steve ended up
- 2:41joining the navy
- 2:42and diane went to the pacific coast
- 2:44baptist bible college in oregon
- 2:46california but the two of them
- 2:47were really in love they considered
- 2:49themselves to be high school sweethearts
- 2:51so they wanted to continue their
- 2:52relationship
- 2:53long distance he promised to be faithful
- 2:55to her
- 2:56and she promised that she would be
- 2:58faithful to him back
- 2:59but that did not last very long and as
- 3:01soon as they were separated
- 3:03diane started hooking up with several
- 3:05different guys and she also started
- 3:06getting in trouble a lot at school
- 3:08and after a year at the baptist bible
- 3:10college that she was at she was expelled
- 3:12for
- 3:13promiscuous behavior so she moved in
- 3:16with
- 3:16her parents again which of course was
- 3:18diane's worst nightmare because they
- 3:20were super strict
- 3:21and living with them was not fun she
- 3:24felt kind of suffocated
- 3:25being under their rules once again so
- 3:27steve was also back around this time so
- 3:29the two of them decided to get back
- 3:31together
- 3:32and run away together and they decided
- 3:34to go ahead and get married on november
- 3:3613th
- 3:361973 and it was a rocky marriage
- 3:40right from the start it was built on a
- 3:42pretty bad foundation you know
- 3:44previous cheating pretty much in a
- 3:45failed relationship people who were
- 3:47around them said that they fought
- 3:48all the time especially about finances
- 3:51and about the possibility of diane
- 3:53cheating again and every time they got
- 3:55in a big fight
- 3:56diane would run back to her parents
- 3:58house and to make
- 3:59matters even more dicey they ended up
- 4:01having a child in 1974.
- 4:04her name was christy anne and then just
- 4:07six months after christy was born
- 4:08diane left her and went and joined the
- 4:10navy so
- 4:11steve had to take care of their baby by
- 4:14himself but luckily for steve
- 4:15this whole navy thing didn't last long
- 4:18diane only made it through
- 4:19three weeks of training before coming
- 4:21home and at the time
- 4:22diane said that she had to leave the
- 4:24navy because of
- 4:25severe blisters but later on in other
- 4:28interviews she claims that it's because
- 4:30steve was neglecting the baby and she
- 4:32had to go home and take care of her
- 4:34so eventually they have another child in
- 4:371976.
- 4:38their second child is named cheryl lynn
- 4:40and after cheryl was born
- 4:42steve decided to have a vasectomy
- 4:44shortly after this diane ended up
- 4:45getting pregnant again
- 4:47so you might be wondering how that
- 4:48happened since steve got a vasectomy but
- 4:51it turns out
- 4:52diane had an affair she ended up having
- 4:53an abortion actually
- 4:55but before she did she named the baby
- 4:58she named her
- 4:59carrie but they stayed together through
- 5:01this and a few years later they moved to
- 5:03mesa arizona diane and steve both got
- 5:06jobs working for a mobile home
- 5:08manufacturing company
- 5:09and it wasn't long until diane met some
- 5:11new co-workers and started having
- 5:13affairs with them
- 5:14eventually diane got pregnant once again
- 5:17and this time she decided to go through
- 5:18with the pregnancy
- 5:19and she gave birth to a baby boy in 1979
- 5:22and his name was stephen
- 5:24daniel now diane was one of those people
- 5:26who would
- 5:27use pregnancy to get what she wanted
- 5:29from men she became a mom for
- 5:31all the wrong reasons she did not
- 5:34actually care about being a mom
- 5:35whatsoever
- 5:36it was a way to manipulate situations
- 5:39and even though
- 5:39diane was still sleeping with other men
- 5:42and had cheated on him
- 5:43many times steve continued to stay with
- 5:45her mainly for
- 5:47the sake of their kids he said he even
- 5:49knew that danny wasn't his kid but he
- 5:52wanted to be like a father figure to him
- 5:54but this did not last
- 5:55and they ended up getting divorced in
- 5:581980.
- 5:59for the next couple of years after that
- 6:00diane continued to hook up with
- 6:02several different men both single and
- 6:05married men and sometimes diane would
- 6:06even move in with these guys for a short
- 6:08amount of time which was really weird
- 6:10she was constantly
- 6:11between places so obviously it was a
- 6:13very unstable situation for her kids
- 6:16of course after steve finally left her
- 6:18diane felt an increased
- 6:20pressure to take care of her kids to
- 6:22provide for them
- 6:23and pregnancy seemed to be something she
- 6:25was good at she was good at getting
- 6:26pregnant having babies so
- 6:28she decided to become a surrogate and of
- 6:30course you can't just become
- 6:32a surrogate thankfully you do have to
- 6:34pass some tests
- 6:35past some evaluations diane ended up
- 6:37failing two
- 6:38of the psychiatric exams one actually
- 6:41noted that she
- 6:42was psychotic but she was still accepted
- 6:46as a surrogate which is very concerning
- 6:48in 1982
- 6:49she gave birth to a little girl named
- 6:51jennifer and was paid
- 6:53ten thousand dollars for that after that
- 6:55she felt like she really wanted to
- 6:56jump into the surrogate industry a
- 6:58little more and start her own
- 7:00surrogacy clinic but that failed before
- 7:02it even got off the ground so
- 7:04meanwhile she was dating a co-worker who
- 7:06was named robert
- 7:07nickenbacher he also went by nick and
- 7:10she said that he was
- 7:11the love of her life now this guy nick
- 7:14was married but he was separated from
- 7:16his wife at the time so the two of them
- 7:19had a relationship going but
- 7:21he said that the relationship was very
- 7:23intense and a bit overwhelming for him
- 7:25so
- 7:25eventually he broke it off and one of
- 7:28the reasons why he broke it off was
- 7:29because he
- 7:30did not like kids in general didn't
- 7:32really like her kids so
- 7:34you know he just felt like it wasn't a
- 7:35good fit but diane was
- 7:37absolutely devastated and it really made
- 7:39her feel angry
- 7:41at her kids she felt like she lost the
- 7:43man of her dreams
- 7:44because of them and diane started to
- 7:47resent
- 7:48her own children when diane was 27 years
- 7:50old she moved with her kids
- 7:52to cottage grove oregon and took a job
- 7:54at the post office there
- 7:55cottage grove is a pretty small place
- 7:57it's a friendly town known for
- 7:59its outdoor activities and hiking trails
- 8:02it's a pretty quiet area
- 8:03you know most of the people know each
- 8:05other that live there and look out for
- 8:06each other
- 8:07but even after diane moved there she was
- 8:09still obsessed with robert and was
- 8:11obsessively
- 8:12writing him letters one time she even
- 8:14visited him in 1983
- 8:16but he made it clear when they were in
- 8:18person that it was
- 8:20over and you might be wondering where
- 8:21her kids would be when she was out
- 8:24working or with men and most of the time
- 8:27they were with her parents but some of
- 8:29the time they were with their fathers
- 8:31but oftentimes they were just left home
- 8:34alone
- 8:34and the six-year-old christy was left in
- 8:37charge of watching the other younger
- 8:39kids
- 8:39also their neighbors started to notice
- 8:41that the kids didn't seem
- 8:42very well taken care of at all they were
- 8:44often hungry
- 8:45and sometimes they were out in the cold
- 8:47without jackets or coats
- 8:49and diane reportedly seemed to pay the
- 8:51least amount of attention to her middle
- 8:53child
- 8:54cheryl and when cheryl was six or seven
- 8:56years old she actually told
- 8:58one of their neighbors that she was
- 8:59afraid to be around diane so diane's
- 9:01life
- 9:02is quite a mess she doesn't take good
- 9:04care of her children
- 9:05they are not happy with her at all and
- 9:08she holds a lot of resentment
- 9:09against them for her failed relationship
- 9:13for holding her back in life it was an
- 9:15absolutely
- 9:16toxic situation so that brings me to
- 9:19thursday
- 9:20may 19 1983 diane and her kids
- 9:24had just gotten done visiting a friend's
- 9:26house and they stayed pretty late
- 9:28i mean the kids were fairly young
- 9:29christy was eight cheryl was seven
- 9:31and danny was just three years old and
- 9:33they didn't leave until about 9
- 9:3530. but at 9 30 diane gets all of her
- 9:38kids in the car
- 9:39and they're going to start heading home
- 9:41cheryl was sitting up front with diane
- 9:43and the other two kids were sitting in
- 9:45the back seat
- 9:45and according to diane here's how the
- 9:48car ride went
- 9:49even though it was late at night for her
- 9:51kids to be out diane decides to go
- 9:54on the scenic route home and all the
- 9:57kids according to her were asleep in the
- 9:58car at that point
- 9:59and diane said this is something that
- 10:01she did often she liked to just
- 10:03drive on roads they hadn't been on
- 10:05before and kind of explore
- 10:06so diane and her kids are driving down
- 10:09this rural road near springfield oregon
- 10:11and exploring and while they're driving
- 10:14down this scenic route the song
- 10:16hungry like the wolf by duran duran is
- 10:18playing on the radio which is
- 10:20quite a weird song to be playing in this
- 10:22moment
- 10:23[Music]
- 10:27she said they were just driving along
- 10:29listening to the song
- 10:30when all of a sudden she sees this man
- 10:33standing in the road
- 10:34and he's like flagging her down it was
- 10:37about 10 pm
- 10:38at this point but that did not stop
- 10:40diane from pulling over
- 10:41for this strange man in the middle of
- 10:43nowhere with a car full of kids
- 10:45she pulls over at the intersection of
- 10:47marcola road and old mohawk road
- 10:49on one side of this intersection is the
- 10:51mackenzie river and on the other side
- 10:53is this kind of empty field it's a very
- 10:56isolated spot
- 10:57diane said that she stopped the car
- 10:59looked behind her and saw her kids
- 11:01sleeping in the back so she decided to
- 11:03get out and talk to this
- 11:05bushy-haired stranger that's how diane
- 11:08described this guy
- 11:09she walks up to the bushy-haired
- 11:10stranger and he
- 11:12automatically demands her car keys at
- 11:14this point diane
- 11:15tries to fight with him they have some
- 11:17type of struggle
- 11:19and he shoots her in the left arm then
- 11:22diane throws her car keys in a bush
- 11:24the guy believes that they're in the
- 11:26bush but she actually still has them
- 11:28on her so she runs over to the car the
- 11:30guy's over at the bush and she has just
- 11:32enough time to jump in the car
- 11:33and take off with all three of the kids
- 11:36who were
- 11:36lying in the back and had been shot then
- 11:39she says
- 11:40she starts driving wildly like a lunatic
- 11:43to the hospital but that's actually not
- 11:46the case
- 11:47diane drove really slow actually finally
- 11:50diane gets to the hospital
- 11:52and by the time she gets there cheryl is
- 11:54unfortunately
- 11:55already dead the others were in horrible
- 11:58condition
- 11:58christy had been shot twice in the chest
- 12:01and danny had been shot in the back
- 12:03danny could barely even move and both of
- 12:06them were barely
- 12:07alive at this point diane's injury was
- 12:10of course the least
- 12:11serious injury she had just been shot in
- 12:13her arm conveniently
- 12:14the bullet shattered her radius and it
- 12:16exited in two different places
- 12:18and diane said it was a horrible injury
- 12:21for her
- 12:21so clearly the whole hospital staff was
- 12:24just
- 12:25shocked to see this woman pull up with
- 12:27these children
- 12:28all shot it was a terrible terrible
- 12:31scene
- 12:32and they expected the mother of these
- 12:34children after working on them
- 12:36to be just devastated when they
- 12:37interviewed her when they tried to
- 12:38figure out what happened
- 12:39but when they started talking to diane
- 12:42they were shocked
- 12:43that she had no emotion whatsoever
- 12:46she did not seem upset at all that her
- 12:49kids were
- 12:50clinging to life and that one was dead
- 12:52she was completely
- 12:53emotionally flat with the police and the
- 12:55doctors i just kept thinking about doing
- 12:58this
- 13:02another thing they noticed is that diane
- 13:04had a towel wrapped around her
- 13:06own wound when she arrived to the
- 13:07hospital but she had
- 13:09not attempted to wrap any type of towel
- 13:11or clothing items around her children's
- 13:13wounds
- 13:14also the back seat of her car was
- 13:15completely covered
- 13:17in blood but none of it was on diane and
- 13:20one thing that was very odd to them is
- 13:22that diane
- 13:23seemed very concerned about the fact
- 13:24that her car her new car
- 13:27had blood on it and she seemed way more
- 13:29concerned about that
- 13:31than the current condition of her
- 13:32children and when she was told that
- 13:34cheryl
- 13:34was dead she accepted it right away in
- 13:36fact she seemed relieved of course
- 13:38normally when a parent is
- 13:40informed that their child is dead they
- 13:42have a
- 13:43horrible reaction it's the worst moment
- 13:45of their lives but diane
- 13:47didn't even seem to be phased by this at
- 13:49all then they told her that dany was hit
- 13:51in the spine
- 13:52and was paralyzed and her response
- 13:55wasn't
- 13:56any type of concern it was shock that he
- 13:59wasn't hit in the heart
- 14:00so the people at the hospital definitely
- 14:02knew something was up
- 14:04right away i mean diane was acting
- 14:06completely bizarre
- 14:07and to my complete surprise diane was
- 14:11non-emotional not a tear in her eye
- 14:14and then she says that really ruined my
- 14:17new car
- 14:18i got blood all over the back of it i've
- 14:20never
- 14:21seen a reaction like that at all she
- 14:24called robert
- 14:25right away from the hospital but she
- 14:26didn't even try to call steve or
- 14:28danny's father and of course a lot of
- 14:30these details were not made public at
- 14:32first so
- 14:33most people felt really bad for diane
- 14:36they were horrified to hear about this
- 14:38child killer out on the loose people
- 14:40felt like this guy could strike at any
- 14:42time
- 14:43people were scared to bring their kids
- 14:44out scared to drive alone
- 14:46a lot of women stopped going out at
- 14:48night at this time and especially with
- 14:50young children
- 14:51danny was only three years old and these
- 14:53gunshot wounds had left him
- 14:55completely paralyzed and the fact that
- 14:57cheryl
- 14:58had died just really scared people
- 15:01however christy
- 15:02was still alive she had had a stroke
- 15:04though so she was in and out of
- 15:06consciousness
- 15:06and unable to communicate at all so that
- 15:09means the only
- 15:10witness was diane and even though the
- 15:13public had a lot of sympathy for diane
- 15:15at first and felt really bad for her
- 15:16the police had mixed feelings on her
- 15:19from the start
- 15:20but they decided to go out and search
- 15:21the area where she said all this
- 15:23happened
- 15:23and tried to look for this bushy-haired
- 15:26man
- 15:26they searched the whole area they even
- 15:28had divers go and search the mckenzie
- 15:30river since it was
- 15:31right next to it and all that they found
- 15:34was a few
- 15:35bullet casings on the ground they had
- 15:37diane give them an official
- 15:39description of the suspect but this
- 15:41didn't really lead anywhere
- 15:42here's the composite sketch that they
- 15:44came up with and of course
- 15:46the media was really interested in this
- 15:48case it was
- 15:49very unusual and people wanted answers
- 15:51as to what happened that night
- 15:53so she started giving interviews and
- 15:56diane started saying some really weird
- 15:57[ __ ]
- 15:58we were just out i guess sightseeing i
- 16:00guess you'd say
- 16:01and the kids got tired they fell asleep
- 16:02in the car so i decided just head on
- 16:05home
- 16:05but i saw a road i hadn't been on before
- 16:08we liked to take back roads
- 16:09and just went down that road and there
- 16:11was a guy standing in the road
- 16:13flagging me down so i stopped everything
- 16:15was done in a matter of five or ten
- 16:17seconds
- 16:17he swung himself around and fired twice
- 16:20one caught him in the arm the other one
- 16:22i went off somewhere danny cried the
- 16:24whole way
- 16:25i could hear him softly just moaning and
- 16:28christy was dying
- 16:31god all the blood all the pain this man
- 16:35shot my daughter my first reaction was
- 16:37to snap back
- 16:38to my childhood to the pain that had
- 16:40happened to me
- 16:42back then my marriage my entrapment by
- 16:45society this man was bigger than me he
- 16:47was stronger than me he had more power
- 16:48because he had a gun and i stood there
- 16:50and i looked at christy reaching
- 16:53and the blood that just kept gushing out
- 16:56of her mouth
- 16:57and and what do you do
- 17:00so the public sympathy for diane did not
- 17:03last long
- 17:04people started to quickly question her
- 17:07whole story it was very suspicious
- 17:09why was she on this dark rule road so
- 17:11late at night with three kids in the car
- 17:13and of course why would she pull over to
- 17:15help some strange man in the middle of
- 17:18nowhere
- 17:18not only that why did she get out of the
- 17:21car and put herself in that situation
- 17:23we were always out on dark roads light
- 17:25roads city roads country roads
- 17:28i was a single woman i had been divorced
- 17:31for a couple of years and quite frankly
- 17:33i got pretty used to driving by myself
- 17:35with the kids
- 17:36so late at night 9 30.
- 17:399 45 9 50 10 o'clock at night the
- 17:42stranger is in the middle of the road
- 17:45and it so it didn't even occur to you
- 17:47that maybe i shouldn't stop
- 17:49well i've picked up many hitchhikers
- 17:51before this man was not a hitchhiker but
- 17:52i had picked up hitchhikers before and
- 17:54nobody ever shot us before and quite
- 17:57frankly nobody had ever been
- 17:59no strange man had ever treated me or my
- 18:02children in such a way and i
- 18:04just had no preconceived notion that he
- 18:07might do those things
- 18:08how did this man know your children were
- 18:10in the car because of the children were
- 18:12sleeping and lying down in the back of
- 18:13the car it's dark on the road
- 18:15how would he know to reach into the car
- 18:16and shoot three
- 18:18children separately oprah i can only
- 18:21give you
- 18:22my conclusion as to what i think might
- 18:24have happened because i don't know i
- 18:25didn't take the time to ask him how or
- 18:27why
- 18:28but when he when he got inside the car
- 18:33um there was a light on inside the car
- 18:35he could have easily seen the children
- 18:37if you want an opinion in my opinion it
- 18:40is possible
- 18:41there were witnesses that saw him out
- 18:42there on the road that night about 30
- 18:44people that saw him
- 18:45and all agreed that he looked like he
- 18:47was drugged in some way
- 18:49things were definitely not adding up for
- 18:52the public
- 18:52and for the police so the police tried
- 18:54to understand a little better
- 18:56how the night unfolded and they decided
- 18:58to have diane actually
- 19:00act out what happened and this to me is
- 19:03one of the scariest
- 19:05clips in true crime honestly the way
- 19:07that she acts
- 19:08really freaks me out diane looks like
- 19:10she was having fun
- 19:11as she is reenacting her kids being
- 19:14murdered
- 19:15you can even see her kind of primping
- 19:17her hair getting ready before they start
- 19:19to roll the camera
- 19:20she's joking around she's laughing i
- 19:22mean
- 19:23most mothers in this situation would
- 19:25barely be able to function
- 19:27and talk you know wouldn't even be able
- 19:29to actually
- 19:30reenact something like this i mean it
- 19:32would be so traumatizing to kind of
- 19:34relive it all again but
- 19:36diane seemed to be having a great old
- 19:38time
- 19:41put the keys in i just hit my cast
- 19:45started the car and left the car door
- 19:48shut itself
- 19:49god this is worse than okay
- 19:53i'm sure he didn't intend to shoot my
- 19:55arm towards the end of that you see she
- 19:57bangs her arm and investigators to this
- 19:59day believe that she was gonna say
- 20:01that was worse than when i shot myself
- 20:04so
- 20:04even after she reenacts all this it
- 20:07doesn't make any more sense to police i
- 20:09mean
- 20:10why would this guy believe that you
- 20:12threw your keys
- 20:13and you know it just didn't seem
- 20:15plausible the whole story
- 20:17and of course seeing diane's mood and
- 20:19behavior in this reenactment police
- 20:21felt like she definitely did something
- 20:24here i mean she is lying for sure there
- 20:26was a lot of red flags but
- 20:28they didn't have the evidence that diane
- 20:30had done it yet
- 20:31so diane continued living her life as
- 20:34normal and
- 20:35started doing some more tv interviews
- 20:37diane definitely seemed to like the
- 20:39attention she was one of those people
- 20:40who just thrives off of it positive or
- 20:43negative
- 20:43and in these interviews she doesn't even
- 20:45try to seem
- 20:47emotional at all she seems completely
- 20:50unfazed by the whole thing
- 20:51in fact she seems more concerned about
- 20:54herself
- 20:55sometimes she even had a disgusting like
- 20:58smirk when she was speaking as if she
- 21:00was
- 21:01kind of getting off on what she was
- 21:02saying and reliving it in her head
- 21:04when he swung around he was pointing
- 21:07when he swung around
- 21:08it hit the tips of my fingers the gun
- 21:09hit the tips of my fingers and that
- 21:11snapped me and i went
- 21:12wait a minute i'm not trapped by society
- 21:15i don't care if he is bigger
- 21:17if i stand here and i say yeah here
- 21:21take the keys i mean there's nothing i
- 21:22can do you win because you have the gun
- 21:25my kids are gonna die and i'm not gonna
- 21:28let my kids die
- 21:29and so instead of giving him the keys i
- 21:32feigned
- 21:32throwing the keys diane explained that
- 21:34the whole ordeal only took like
- 21:36five to ten seconds which is a pretty
- 21:39short amount of time for someone to kill
- 21:41three children but of course it's
- 21:43possible she said the man had actually
- 21:45shot at her twice
- 21:46she'd only been hit once in the arm but
- 21:49one of them he just missed
- 21:50and then he walked over and shot all
- 21:52three kids so that's quite a lot to
- 21:54happen in that short
- 21:55of a time and hearing her say that the
- 21:57whole thing was so short
- 21:59made even more people question her story
- 22:01and people started to be
- 22:02more vocal about this and diane did not
- 22:05like the criticism
- 22:07in one interview she sounds just
- 22:09irritated that people are asking any
- 22:11questions
- 22:12if i had shot my own children would i
- 22:14not have done a good job of it
- 22:16why would i have taken my kids to the
- 22:18hospital wouldn't i have made sure they
- 22:20were dead and then cried crocodile tears
- 22:21that's insane to think that i would do
- 22:23such a thing and then
- 22:24bring the witnesses in against myself
- 22:26that's crazy so then one day diane
- 22:28decides to go and visit her daughter
- 22:30christy in the hospital her vitals were
- 22:33stable at this point but she was still
- 22:34unable to communicate verbally
- 22:37but when diane walked in the room her
- 22:39heart rate
- 22:40spiked the medical staff instantly knew
- 22:43that she was afraid of her mom so they
- 22:45reported this to detectives who took
- 22:48note of it and as far as what the police
- 22:50knew at this point
- 22:51from what dianne had told them she had
- 22:54hopped right in the car
- 22:55after tricking this guy and drove
- 22:58straight to the hospital as fast as she
- 22:59can that she drove
- 23:01like a lunatic but in reality like i
- 23:03mentioned
- 23:04she was driving really slow and the
- 23:06police actually found out about this
- 23:08by interviewing a witness who was
- 23:10driving behind diane on the way to the
- 23:11hospital
- 23:12and this guy that was driving behind her
- 23:14said that she was driving
- 23:15so slow and seemed to be purposely going
- 23:18slow to like piss him off
- 23:20and he ended up having to just drive
- 23:22around her and then
- 23:24it came out that police had actually
- 23:25searched diane's car
- 23:27and they found blood on her passenger
- 23:29side
- 23:30door which does not make sense with her
- 23:33story
- 23:33she said that this man had shot her kids
- 23:35on the driver's side of the car
- 23:37no one was ever on the passenger side so
- 23:39how did this blood
- 23:41get there the victims had been shot with
- 23:4322 caliber bullets but
- 23:45diane denied even owning a handgun
- 23:47however the police had talked to steve
- 23:49and he confirmed that diane did
- 23:51own a handgun and when police searched
- 23:53her house they found a rifle
- 23:55and bullet cartridges that had been
- 23:57tampered with and these bullet
- 23:58cartridges had been ejected from another
- 24:00weapon
- 24:01the extraction marks on the bullets were
- 24:03unique though and they match the casings
- 24:05that were found
- 24:06at the crime scene but they also
- 24:07confiscated diane's diaries
- 24:10and they read several entries about that
- 24:12guy robert
- 24:13that diane was really obsessed with the
- 24:15guy who broke her heart
- 24:17and they also found several letters that
- 24:19were addressed to him
- 24:20she wrote things like i still think of
- 24:22you as my best friend
- 24:24and my only lover you keep telling me to
- 24:26go away and find somebody else
- 24:28you have got to be kidding in her diary
- 24:30entries she talks about how robert
- 24:32didn't want to have kids and how
- 24:33sad it was making her she also wrote
- 24:36some poems about him one of them said
- 24:38i love you more than could your wife yet
- 24:40it's brought sorrow to my life
- 24:42i just keep hoping and hanging on how
- 24:44much longer can i be
- 24:46strong and in the diary entry she talked
- 24:48a lot about how
- 24:49robert didn't want to have kids and how
- 24:51she was sad about it
- 24:52so they started to feel like maybe it
- 24:54was possible that diane
- 24:56got rid of her kids because she felt
- 24:58like they were holding her back from
- 25:00finding love
- 25:01or that maybe she could be with robert
- 25:03if she didn't have the kids
- 25:05and of course during this whole time
- 25:07diane continues to
- 25:09blab on to the media she's doing
- 25:11interviews and eating up all the
- 25:13attention but
- 25:14public support is really starting to
- 25:16shift he
- 25:17said then that he was afraid because he
- 25:20believed
- 25:22that you had shot your children because
- 25:24of him
- 25:26yeah and
- 25:28i don't know what to say to that i mean
- 25:30jesus that's his problem and not mine i
- 25:32mean that's his paranoia and his fears
- 25:34give you know give me a break i'm not
- 25:36the one that said that over the weekend
- 25:38rumors began to fly about we have not
- 25:40overlooked any possible
- 25:42suspects reporters covering the story
- 25:43were getting hints that downs herself
- 25:45was assessing what has occurred here is
- 25:46just inexcusable people could tell that
- 25:48there was something off about her i mean
- 25:50the way she talked
- 25:51her lack of emotion lack of empathy at
- 25:54one point she even insisted
- 25:56that danny wasn't really paralyzed
- 25:58danny's gonna walk again i don't care if
- 26:00we just have to will him to walk
- 26:01i think he's gonna walk the doctors all
- 26:03say he won't but i know that your mind
- 26:05controls your body and if i can love him
- 26:07enough
- 26:07and encourage him enough i believe he'll
- 26:09walk and she seemed oblivious to
- 26:11what was actually going on she seemed so
- 26:14dead set in her story
- 26:15and convinced herself that other people
- 26:18were convinced by her
- 26:20she really thought that everyone was
- 26:21believing everything that she said
- 26:23eventually after finding some more
- 26:24evidence detectives brought diane back
- 26:26in
- 26:27for some more questioning they did a
- 26:28two-hour interrogation with her
- 26:30and during this time diane changed her
- 26:33story
- 26:34several times diane's one of those
- 26:35people who lie so much
- 26:37that she can't keep track of her lies
- 26:39and they start to get twisted
- 26:40at first she started telling them that
- 26:42there were actually two attackers
- 26:44and that one of them at least knew her
- 26:46by name and knew about her tattoo
- 26:50talk to you refer to you by name and
- 26:52also refer to your tattoo
- 26:54right as close as you can remember
- 26:57what did he tell you if you say anything
- 27:00about
- 27:01what happened here they'd come back and
- 27:03kill me then she starts claiming that
- 27:05she knew
- 27:06the person who shot her and she just
- 27:08wasn't saying who it was for some reason
- 27:10and when police pushed her to try to get
- 27:12a name out of her
- 27:13she got really mad and ended up storming
- 27:16out of the room
- 27:17come on diane it's your turn back
- 27:20since you guys seem to think that i
- 27:21should have brought the diane with me
- 27:23i will get it myself because i know who
- 27:25did it you do know who did yes i do
- 27:28i damn sure do you know him by name
- 27:31yes i did yeah yeah it's pretty
- 27:34important
- 27:34and i saw him grab my arm and yank my
- 27:37arm out
- 27:38and shoot my arm and say now try to get
- 27:39away with it
- 27:41and i'm leaving because i know who did
- 27:43it bye the time is now
- 27:4517 46
- 27:48and diane is just a part of the office
- 27:51by this time
- 27:52people were completely over diane i mean
- 27:55no one
- 27:56was really believing her and people
- 27:58wanted her to be held accountable
- 28:00people were really calling for her
- 28:02arrest and the police wanted to arrest
- 28:04her too
- 28:05but they needed a little bit more
- 28:06evidence and the one thing they wanted
- 28:08to do
- 28:08was talk to christy but she was still
- 28:11unable to talk
- 28:12however she was on the path to recovery
- 28:14and they felt like if they waited a
- 28:15little while that eventually they would
- 28:17be able to talk to her
- 28:18now they knew that christy had to be
- 28:20extremely emotionally traumatized after
- 28:23being in that car ride and seeing her
- 28:24siblings get
- 28:25shot potentially by her own mother so
- 28:28they knew they had to just go about this
- 28:30really slow they didn't want her to be
- 28:32scared and question her own memory of
- 28:34what happened that night
- 28:36or feel like she needed to defend and
- 28:38protect her mom in any way so
- 28:40they decided it was best that she start
- 28:42by working with a therapist
- 28:44so she did she started seeing a
- 28:46therapist and eventually this therapist
- 28:48really started to gain her trust and the
- 28:50therapist starts having her
- 28:51write down the name of who hurt her that
- 28:53night and then throw it into
- 28:55a fire and hopefully one day she won't
- 28:59want to
- 28:59burn it was the idea she did this over
- 29:01and over again and eventually
- 29:03she was comfortable enough to let
- 29:05therapist read the piece of paper
- 29:07and on the piece of paper that she gave
- 29:09her therapist she wrote down
- 29:11my mom at this point it was clear to
- 29:13everyone that the shooter
- 29:15was diane downes so nine months after
- 29:18the shooting took place
- 29:19diane was arrested on february 28 1984.
- 29:23of course once the arrest happened media
- 29:25coverage totally blew up
- 29:26and she was back in the spotlight again
- 29:28and diane seemed to really enjoy
- 29:30the renewed media attention diane was
- 29:33said to be flirting a lot with the
- 29:34officers and the guards and
- 29:36she would smile for cameras like none of
- 29:38it really mattered to her
- 29:40she acted so light-hearted about it all
- 29:43she didn't seem to have any guilt dianne
- 29:45was charged with one count of murder and
- 29:47two counts of attempted murder and
- 29:49criminal assault
- 29:50and by the time the trial started on may
- 29:5210 1984 diane was
- 29:54noticeably pregnant yup that's right
- 29:57diane was pregnant
- 29:59once again there's a clip of her walking
- 30:01into the courtroom
- 30:02showing off her pregnant belly and
- 30:04smiling
- 30:05as if she's very proud of herself for
- 30:08getting pregnant once again
- 30:09later on they interviewed her and she
- 30:11said that the reason she got pregnant
- 30:13again is because she missed her children
- 30:15and she was
- 30:16lonely once again it was clear that
- 30:18diane was using pregnancy
- 30:20to get something that she wanted and
- 30:21this time it was sympathy
- 30:23maybe diane thought she would get better
- 30:24treatment in jail or have a better
- 30:26outcome on her case
- 30:28if she was pregnant you know maybe she
- 30:30thought that the jury would be emotional
- 30:32about sending an expecting mother to
- 30:34prison
- 30:35i was extremely lonely i missed my kids
- 30:37desperately i had just seen christy on
- 30:39the 2nd of october
- 30:41and it just it's like opening a wound
- 30:43and pouring salt in i was
- 30:45extremely lonely beyond belief and
- 30:47beyond explanation
- 30:48and on october 13th i just went and got
- 30:52pregnant because
- 30:53i was so lonely i love my children i
- 30:55miss my children and i know that sounds
- 30:57simplistic it really does and i have to
- 30:59admit that
- 31:00and that's why i say there's so much
- 31:01more feeling inside that i can give in
- 31:03two minutes
- 31:04i got pregnant because i miss christy
- 31:07and i miss danny and i miss cheryl so
- 31:09much i'm never gonna see
- 31:10cheryl on earth again and i just
- 31:13you can't replace children but you can
- 31:16replace the effect that they give you
- 31:18and they give me love they give me
- 31:20satisfaction they give me stability they
- 31:21give me a reason to live and a reason to
- 31:23be happy and
- 31:24and that's gone they took it from me but
- 31:27children are so easy to conceive and
- 31:30going into trial diane seemed
- 31:32very confident that she was going to get
- 31:34away with this i mean diane's confidence
- 31:36really never slipped and the way that
- 31:38she was acting the courtroom
- 31:39was just as bizarre as her media
- 31:41interviews to really
- 31:42paint a picture in the jury's mind the
- 31:45prosecution played
- 31:46hungry like the wolf in the courtroom
- 31:48and diane
- 31:50was dancing to it like tapping her feet
- 31:53having a good old time they also played
- 31:55her interrogation tapes
- 31:56and while she was watching them she
- 31:58still had absolutely
- 32:00no emotion the prosecution also brought
- 32:03in a model of her car
- 32:04and they used dolls in the car to
- 32:07demonstrate how diane would have killed
- 32:09her children and this was very effective
- 32:11in court because it really helped the
- 32:13jury
- 32:14see how this would have happened and
- 32:16understand how the blood would have
- 32:17gotten on the passenger side door
- 32:19and it really painted a picture for them
- 32:22of how injured the kids were
- 32:23and how heartless diane had to be to
- 32:26drive slowly to the hospital i mean it
- 32:29was obvious that she thought the longer
- 32:30that she took
- 32:32the less of a chance the kids would have
- 32:34of surviving
- 32:35they brought in a mock-up of the car and
- 32:38fred hughey
- 32:39got a gun and he was reenacting the
- 32:42crime
- 32:42and when he was going through the
- 32:44motions of
- 32:46firing the gun at the christie doll and
- 32:48at the cheryl doll and at the danny doll
- 32:51he couldn't shoot the danny doll because
- 32:53the danny doll
- 32:54was back here and he raised up and he
- 32:58looked at me
- 32:58and i went like this and he went his
- 33:02face he had a
- 33:03look of incredulation on his face and
- 33:06his mouth started to open
- 33:08and i nodded my head yes and he had to
- 33:10switch the gun to the left hand
- 33:12a right-handed person could not have
- 33:14shot the danny doll they also made the
- 33:16very difficult decision
- 33:17to have christy actually testify but it
- 33:20was vitally important
- 33:22they were worried that christy may not
- 33:23be able to handle it you know testifying
- 33:25with her mother
- 33:26in the room against her that maybe she
- 33:28would be
- 33:29just too emotionally traumatized to even
- 33:33talk about it in front of people
- 33:34christy was only nine years old she had
- 33:36survived a horrific
- 33:38incident and they just had no idea how
- 33:40she would handle all of that pressure
- 33:41but she did
- 33:42a really good job she told the court
- 33:44that she remembered her mom
- 33:46stopping the car getting out and going
- 33:48back to the trunk to get something out
- 33:50she said that cheryl was in the front
- 33:52seat and that her and danny were in the
- 33:54back
- 33:54and then diane came around the car with
- 33:56something in her hand
- 33:58and she recalled her mother leaning into
- 34:00the car and shooting cheryl first
- 34:02at point blank range and christy was
- 34:05watching all this
- 34:06then she leaned over the back seat and
- 34:09shot danny
- 34:10and then reached over and shot her as
- 34:13well
- 34:13then she said she watched diane shoot
- 34:15herself wrap a towel around her
- 34:17arm and get back in the car and start
- 34:20driving
- 34:21slowly towards the hospital now there's
- 34:23no video of this testimony but
- 34:25according to everyone that was there it
- 34:28was extremely
- 34:29emotional listening to christy describe
- 34:31all of this happen
- 34:32and then she was cross-examined and a
- 34:35defense attorney
- 34:36actually tried to get her to admit that
- 34:38someone coached her into saying all this
- 34:40but she stayed strong and said that her
- 34:43mom
- 34:43shot her and her siblings so then diane
- 34:46gets up there
- 34:47and testified as well and claimed that
- 34:49she was
- 34:50innocent she tried to deny everything
- 34:52but then she also blamed a lot of her
- 34:54behavior
- 34:55on her multiple affairs her obsession
- 34:57with robert
- 34:58and on her abusive childhood as well in
- 35:00fact she
- 35:01accused her father in court of molesting
- 35:03her when she was about 12 years old
- 35:05the defense also tried to argue that the
- 35:07bullet casings that were found on the
- 35:09ground were
- 35:10placed there by police in order to frame
- 35:12diane
- 35:13but clearly that's not true they also
- 35:15tried to argue that she was manipulated
- 35:17by detectives when she was being
- 35:19interviewed but
- 35:20anyone who listens to the interview can
- 35:22tell that that's not true either luckily
- 35:24the jury
- 35:24was not buying any of this they knew
- 35:26that diane
- 35:27was guilty there are nine women on the
- 35:29jury and three men
- 35:31and they ended up deliberating for over
- 35:3336
- 35:34hours trying to come to a conclusion but
- 35:37after all that
- 35:38luckily the verdict was unanimous diane
- 35:41was
- 35:42guilty
- 35:45after she was found guilty diane still
- 35:48tried to convince people that she was
- 35:50innocent
- 35:51in fact she still tries to claim that
- 35:53she's innocent to this day
- 35:54i wouldn't walk in there and say this
- 35:56weird person came up out of nowhere and
- 35:58shot us for no reason and just
- 35:59left i mean that's not a believable
- 36:02story i could have if i had done this i
- 36:03could have come up with a believable
- 36:05story it really happened
- 36:07i could smell the blood i could smell
- 36:08the gunpowder i i could
- 36:10it was just a really really horrible
- 36:12feeling but before she was even
- 36:14sentenced 10 days before she was
- 36:16supposed to be sentenced
- 36:17she gave birth to a baby girl who was
- 36:20named
- 36:20amy elizabeth of course she only saw
- 36:23this baby once before she was taken away
- 36:25from her
- 36:26and she was adopted and renamed rebecca
- 36:29nicknamed becky around this time diane
- 36:31was also examined by
- 36:33psychiatrists and she was diagnosed with
- 36:35being narcissistic
- 36:36and had antisocial personality disorders
- 36:39luckily diane downs ended up being
- 36:41sentenced to life in prison plus 50
- 36:44years
- 36:45and she wouldn't even be given the
- 36:46chance for a possible parole
- 36:48for 25 years after that but very
- 36:51unlikely that she would ever get parole
- 36:53her father wes denied her accusations of
- 36:55the sexual abuse
- 36:56and diane later admitted that she just
- 36:58made it all up
- 36:59but even after all these false
- 37:01allegations were made against him
- 37:03he continued to support his daughter and
- 37:05believed that she was innocent he passed
- 37:07away in 2017
- 37:08but up until he died he believed that
- 37:11diane was
- 37:12in prison for something she didn't do so
- 37:14then in july
- 37:15of 1987 diane decided to try and escape
- 37:19prison
- 37:19she was out in the exercise yard getting
- 37:21some fresh air when she decided to
- 37:23execute her plan she climbed a 16 foot
- 37:26fence
- 37:27somehow used her jacket to get over the
- 37:29top
- 37:30and actually escape she hid underneath a
- 37:32car outside the jail
- 37:34and then when it was clear she just ran
- 37:37and diane is considered to be
- 37:38a very dangerous person so a massive
- 37:42manhunt for her started the story was
- 37:44reported on the news in multiple states
- 37:46and they had searches across multiple
- 37:48states to make sure that diane
- 37:50was found people were really worried at
- 37:52the time that she could possibly
- 37:53go after christy detectives searched the
- 37:56cell phone that she had in jail
- 37:58with her yeah she had a cell phone and
- 38:00they didn't find any clues about where
- 38:02she possibly could have gone any details
- 38:04about her escape all they found was
- 38:06a clipboard with a piece of blank paper
- 38:08on it but they noticed that there were
- 38:10indentations in the paper
- 38:12clearly another piece was pulled off the
- 38:14top
- 38:15so they did that classic trick where you
- 38:17sketch over the bottom piece
- 38:19and you can see what was written on the
- 38:21paper that was
- 38:22before it and there was actually a
- 38:24drawing with a map
- 38:26and an address 2262 state street which
- 38:29is just a few blocks from the prison
- 38:32and this address ended up being her
- 38:34former cellmate's husband
- 38:35so they went there and it turns out
- 38:37diane had been hiding there
- 38:38the entire time with this girl's husband
- 38:41and she had managed to
- 38:43stay there for 11 days before they
- 38:46finally
- 38:47brought her back to the prison and
- 38:49because of her attempted escape
- 38:51they tacked on an extra five years to
- 38:53her sentence
- 38:54after this diane was transferred to a
- 38:56maximum security prison in new jersey
- 38:58and was denied parole multiple times
- 39:00while she was there
- 39:01and by this point she was looking pretty
- 39:03rough
- 39:04so now that diane was back in prison
- 39:07hopefully
- 39:08danny and christy could move on with
- 39:10their lives
- 39:11after being through so much trauma but
- 39:14luckily they were both alive
- 39:15her youngest daughter who is now named
- 39:17becky and had been adopted
- 39:19was living a really good childhood
- 39:22thankfully
- 39:22away from diane and had no idea that
- 39:25diane
- 39:26existed or anything about her biological
- 39:29mother but as she got older
- 39:31she started to have suspicions that
- 39:33there was a reason
- 39:34that her parents didn't want her to know
- 39:36who her biological mother was
- 39:38and when becky was 11 years old she came
- 39:40up with a plan to trick a babysitter
- 39:43into
- 39:44telling her who her mother was basically
- 39:46she pretended to
- 39:48know who it was when she really didn't
- 39:50and the babysitter just
- 39:51said it then she found the book small
- 39:53sacrifices by anne
- 39:55rule at a local bookstore and this is
- 39:57the most famous book that's been written
- 39:59on diane downs anne rule is a very
- 40:01famous author
- 40:02but finding this book was absolutely
- 40:05shocking to her finding out who her
- 40:07mother
- 40:07really was scared her so much
- 40:10finding out that her biological mother
- 40:13attempted to kill
- 40:14her other siblings was devastating to
- 40:17her
- 40:17becky was so upset at the time that she
- 40:19just left the bookstore
- 40:21and tried to kind of forget about it all
- 40:23then she was hanging out with one of her
- 40:25boyfriends
- 40:25and she watched a mini series on diane
- 40:28downs and something about that just
- 40:30really got to her it just really made it
- 40:32all sink in
- 40:33and she was devastated by the time she
- 40:36left his house
- 40:37becky felt totally lost i mean she was
- 40:40scared that she had come from this woman
- 40:42scared that she could have ended up with
- 40:45her
- 40:45a part of me was afraid that
- 40:49that's where i came from does that mean
- 40:50where i'm going
- 40:52and with all the stress she ended up
- 40:54turning to drugs she dropped out of
- 40:56school
- 40:57and she ran away from her parents house
- 40:59at this point her life
- 41:00just spun out of control and she was
- 41:02severely traumatized for
- 41:04years after finding out who her mother
- 41:07really was
- 41:07becky got pregnant young just like her
- 41:09mother when she was 17
- 41:11and her child was taken away from her
- 41:13right away she got pregnant again
- 41:15at 21 and at this time she was living in
- 41:17a homeless shelter
- 41:19and she made the decision to put this
- 41:21baby up for adoption
- 41:22after that she wanted to reach out to
- 41:24diane
- 41:25and so she ended up writing her letters
- 41:28in prison
- 41:28and surprisingly diane actually got back
- 41:30to her and she had seen pictures of her
- 41:33and the first thing that she said to her
- 41:35in the letters was wow you look just
- 41:36like me
- 41:37don't you hate that chin we have in the
- 41:40beginning of the letter she was talking
- 41:41about how becky was beautiful and
- 41:43it was great to hear from her blah blah
- 41:45but as it continued
- 41:46she started accusing becky of being
- 41:48involved in a mass conspiracy
- 41:51against her she accused becky of being a
- 41:54spy
- 41:54so becky decided that it was time to
- 41:57stop talking to diane
- 41:58after some time and some self-healing
- 42:01becky came to the conclusion that just
- 42:02because she was biologically related to
- 42:05diane
- 42:05it didn't mean that she had to be
- 42:07anything like her she worked really hard
- 42:09and ended up getting her life together
- 42:11and was a really great mom
- 42:13to her son chris after all she got a
- 42:15degree in psychology
- 42:16and ended up working as a behavioral
- 42:18health coordinator for children
- 42:20and there was also somewhat of a happy
- 42:22ending for diane's other two children
- 42:24christy and danny
- 42:25they were actually both adopted by one
- 42:27of the prosecutors in this case
- 42:29fred hughey and his wife joanne danny
- 42:32tragically was paralyzed from the waist
- 42:35down because of his injuries and christy
- 42:38also has a speech impediment but they
- 42:40were adopted by
- 42:41great people and they made sure that
- 42:43they had all the resources that they
- 42:45could to heal and process everything
- 42:47that they had been through
- 42:48he adopted my children and according to
- 42:51christie never said a bad word
- 42:52against me ever that was out of
- 42:55christie's mouth
- 42:56fred hughey in all the time that he
- 42:58raised her never spoke ill of me
- 43:00i believe that fred hughey knows that
- 43:02there is a man out there
- 43:04that was hunting my children and it
- 43:05wasn't until after christie told
- 43:07her schoolmates she drew pictures in
- 43:10school and she said this is the man who
- 43:12shot us
- 43:13i didn't i lied in court because
- 43:16they wanted me to say this and they
- 43:18wouldn't leave me alone dr peter she
- 43:20said dr peterson kept pressuring me and
- 43:22he wouldn't leave me alone
- 43:23they now live a very quiet and peaceful
- 43:25life with their families
- 43:27and they stay out of the media diane is
- 43:30currently in the central california
- 43:31women's facility in chauchila california
- 43:34and in 2020 she actually got coven and
- 43:37had
- 43:38pretty bad symptoms but she said she
- 43:40worked really hard through it
- 43:41she actually said i dragged myself to
- 43:43work on the 11th and 12th of march
- 43:45exhausted and fuzzy in the brain dry
- 43:47cough headaches sinuses clogged with
- 43:49very thick mucus
- 43:51i showered and slept for four hours woke
- 43:53up and drank water
- 43:54and then went back to sleep for 16 more
- 43:55hours when i see what others have
- 43:57suffered i think my boss probably saved
- 43:59my life
- 44:00she also spoke about her children and
- 44:02said every time the world news shows big
- 44:04red circles on the national map
- 44:06i look at oregon because that's where
- 44:08christy and daniel are
- 44:09compared to other states it appears that
- 44:11oregon's red circle is smaller than most
- 44:13places
- 44:14is organ relatively virus free or are my
- 44:17children in greater danger than the red
- 44:18circle size suggests i still worry about
- 44:21them
- 44:21and love them though they will never
- 44:23know it so clearly diane is still
- 44:25in complete denial and she probably will
- 44:28never
- 44:29show any type of remorse for what she
- 44:31did to her children that night
- 44:32you remember now pretending to throw the
- 44:35keys
- 44:36yes i do and that was after he turned
- 44:38back towards me
- 44:39and kicking him and managing to jump in
- 44:42the car and race to the hospital
- 44:44yes and as a matter of fact you didn't
- 44:47mention the fact that
- 44:48my arm was so absolutely contorted after
- 44:51the shooting it was twisted and shoved
- 44:53back two inches twisted at a 90 degree
- 44:55angle which proves
- 44:56that there was a struggle and there's
- 44:58also blood on the driver's seat
- 44:59which is evidence of the fact that i
- 45:01jumped in the car and my arm fell
- 45:03against the seat helplessly
- 45:05as i stated but there was no blood at
- 45:07all
- 45:08in the driver part and your arm went
- 45:10back to the hospital
- 45:11was completely wrapped in a triangle
- 45:14bandage that made out of a towel oh jeez
- 45:17and you're comical
- 45:18you are so far-fetched i'm serious there
- 45:21was a towel wrapped around my arm yes
- 45:23there absolutely was and i don't know
- 45:24how it got there anymore then you know
- 45:26how it got there
- 45:27i think diane should definitely be up
- 45:29there with some of the most
- 45:30evil women of all time i mean she is
- 45:34cold to the core like she has
- 45:37no ounce of empathy in her soul
