- 0:00There are homes that make you pause.
- 0:01They're not enormous, yet somehow they
- 0:03have a sense of grandeur. Everything
- 0:05feels right because the home is
- 0:07balanced, confident, and effortless. You
- 0:09assume the owner must have spent a
- 0:10fortune, but that's usually not the
- 0:12case. Can money help when designing a
- 0:14home? Yes, but that's not what gives a
- 0:17room its character. The difference is a
- 0:19way of thinking that influences every
- 0:21decision made inside the home. My name
- 0:24is Chad and today I'm sharing six habits
- 0:26that will greatly improve your ability
- 0:28to create an impressive space. If you're
- 0:31a returning subscriber, hit the thumbs
- 0:32up. If you're new here, hopefully by the
- 0:35end of this video, you'll be a
- 0:36subscriber. Remember that if you would
- 0:38like our help in designing your room,
- 0:41you can have that help by clicking the
- 0:42link in the description below. The first
- 0:45habit is editing, not decorating,
- 0:48editing. The most memorable homes are
- 0:50rarely the ones with the most things.
- 0:52They're homes where someone had the
- 0:54discipline to leave things out. People
- 0:57will approach decorating like shopping.
- 0:59I have an empty corner. What can I buy
- 1:01for this wall? This shelf needs
- 1:03something. Before long, the room begins
- 1:05collecting objects instead of building
- 1:08character. Polished homes work
- 1:10differently. Every piece has earned its
- 1:12place. If something doesn't improve the
- 1:14room, it doesn't stay. This doesn't mean
- 1:16minimalism, it's far from it. Some of
- 1:18the richest, warmest interiors we've
- 1:20ever designed contain hundreds of
- 1:22objects. Books, artwork, vintage pieces,
- 1:25layered textiles, collected artifacts,
- 1:27but every item contributes to the same
- 1:30story. There's nothing arbitrary.
- 1:32Nothing feels like it was purchased
- 1:34simply because there wasn't empty space.
- 1:36Editing isn't about owning less, it's
- 1:38about allowing the right things to have
- 1:40significance. The second habit is buying
- 1:43with patience. The pressure to finish a
- 1:45room quickly often leads to the wrong
- 1:47decisions. When you buy whatever fits
- 1:50the immediate budget, whatever ships the
- 1:51fastest, or whatever happens to be
- 1:53available, months later, you'll find the
- 1:56room technically has everything it
- 1:57needs, yet somehow still feels hollow.
- 2:00The homes people admire most aren't
- 2:02rushed into existence. Sometimes the
- 2:04perfect chair takes months to find. The
- 2:06artwork might come a year later. The
- 2:08lamp you imagined doesn't exist until
- 2:11you stumble across it unexpectedly.
- 2:13Cultivation is a practice of patience.
- 2:17Think about a remarkable bottle of wine.
- 2:19It isn't remarkable because someone
- 2:20rushed the process. Time is one of its
- 2:23ingredients. A wine maker doesn't
- 2:25harvest the first grapes he sees. He
- 2:27waits because timing affects the outcome
- 2:30just as much as the fruit itself. The
- 2:33third habit is repetition of variety.
- 2:35When people hear variety, they often
- 2:37assume every piece should be different.
- 2:40Different woods, different metals,
- 2:41different fabrics, different colors. The
- 2:44result is disorder. Confident rooms
- 2:47repeat themselves. The walnut from one
- 2:49piece is echoed elsewhere in the room.
- 2:51The aged brass appears again in the
- 2:53lighting. Black steel is repeated.
- 2:56Leather returns. Before long, the room
- 2:58forms its own language. Each repeated
- 3:01material becomes another word in its
- 3:03vocabulary. By the time the room is
- 3:05complete, it's communicating fluently in
- 3:08a native tongue. The fourth habit is
- 3:10thinking in layers. Many rooms contain
- 3:13furniture. Fewer contain atmosphere. A
- 3:16sofa and coffee table can make a room
- 3:18functional, but they're rarely enough to
- 3:20make someone want to stay. Atmosphere
- 3:22comes from layers of rugs softening the
- 3:25floor, lighting at different heights,
- 3:27books with worn edges, artwork that
- 3:29introduces depth, neutral materials,
- 3:32texture, shadows. These aren't
- 3:34accessories. They're what make a room
- 3:36feel lived-in rather than furnished. The
- 3:39fifth habit is choosing quality before
- 3:42quantity. This doesn't mean buying
- 3:43luxury brands. It means recognizing that
- 3:46one exceptional piece often carries more
- 3:48presence than five forgettable ones.
- 3:51There could be a beautifully made
- 3:52leather chair, a well-crafted coffee
- 3:54table, and an heirloom cabinet. These
- 3:57become anchors. They give the room
- 3:59conviction. Once those pieces exist, a
- 4:02standard is established for everything
- 4:04else. You don't need 20 impressive
- 4:06objects. You need a few that encourage
- 4:09the rest of the room to rise and meet
- 4:11them. And finally, perhaps the most
- 4:14overlooked habit of all is allowing the
- 4:16room to evolve. Many people think
- 4:19there's a finish line. One final
- 4:20purchase, one last accessory, and then
- 4:23the room will be complete forever. The
- 4:25best homes never stop changing. A new
- 4:28book gets added, artwork will inevitably
- 4:30move around, maybe an incredible vintage
- 4:32find replaces something in the room that
- 4:35was ordinary. The room grows because the
- 4:38owner grows. A home is an autobiography
- 4:40written without words. Your home
- 4:42shouldn't feel frozen in time. It should
- 4:44feel as though it's growing in parallel
- 4:46with you. Throughout history, enduring
- 4:49homes have always been carefully
- 4:50curated. One thoughtful decision built
- 4:53upon another. The direction of these
- 4:55rooms is so unmistakable, they become
- 4:57impossible to imagine any other way.
- 5:00Someone might describe them as stylish,
- 5:03but that would be inaccurate. Style
- 5:05follows fashion and trend. These homes
- 5:08were built on unending principles. For
- 5:10the man who lives there, it reflects the
- 5:12practice of better judgment, and that
- 5:14never goes out of style. If you like the
- 5:17video, hit the thumbs up. If you feel
- 5:19like sticking around a while, feel free
- 5:20to subscribe. See you in the next one.
