The Dead Don't Suffer Trauma — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hello, welcome to VPR Zanu Project
- 0:04Rethink. And I'm Frank Zano. And today,
- 0:06um, I I just woke up this morning since
- 0:102:00 a.m. to take down some notes
- 0:12because I had a private, uh, one-on-one
- 0:15with, uh, um, a certain group of people
- 0:18and, uh, the topic was quite interesting
- 0:21and the inspirations that came out of
- 0:23that topic. I thought there is no way,
- 0:26um, I would withhold that from uh, the
- 0:28rethink community. And so that is what I
- 0:31I'm about to share with you today. Uh
- 0:34this monologue is going to be maybe
- 0:36sometimes emotional but I will try to
- 0:38keep my cool and uh please allow me to
- 0:41refer to the notes because it's just
- 0:43fresh on my mind. I woke up in the
- 0:44middle of the night and I took down
- 0:46these notes and I thought it's something
- 0:48you should hear. Now why is this topic
- 0:51important? Well, you've taken a look at
- 0:53France recently, the UK and then Belgium
- 0:56and Albania and the list is just growing
- 1:00about the dis satisfaction and uh the
- 1:03lack of uh integration, adaptation,
- 1:06assimilation, whichever you call it that
- 1:09people who arrive from other places into
- 1:12new areas are now having problem with
- 1:15their host environment or turn it inward
- 1:19here in the United States of America.
- 1:22Go on Tik Tok, go on YouTube, go on
- 1:25Instagram. And when you if you continue
- 1:28to click two seconds, two seconds, two
- 1:29seconds, it's the bitterness, the pain
- 1:32that it's about somebody who is doing
- 1:35something to me and I can't take it
- 1:37anymore and I have to complain that we
- 1:40are not settling down at all to enjoy
- 1:43this short period life is offering us to
- 1:45be here on earth. Whether you are in the
- 1:47United States, in the Caribbean, in
- 1:49Africa, in Europe, whether you've
- 1:51migrated or not migrated,
- 1:55it's time to pause and rethink and ask
- 1:59ourselves
- 2:01the rhetorics coming out of our mouth,
- 2:03the stories we are telling to our young
- 2:04ones,
- 2:06the statements we are making, is it
- 2:09really helping us?
- 2:12What is it at all in one line can we say
- 2:17is wrong?
- 2:19Are we trying to say that oh we are
- 2:21these very arrogant but blessed people
- 2:24that nothing in this world that is
- 2:27negative should ever happen to me? Is
- 2:30that what I'm trying to claim? that
- 2:31whenever something goes wrong, I should
- 2:34believe strongly that this is about me
- 2:36and that this person designed it solely
- 2:38to make me unpleasant and that when I
- 2:41was born, I was I was guaranteed by God
- 2:44that nothing unpleasant would ever
- 2:46happen to me. Did you receive that
- 2:48guarantee
- 2:50even if you still remain in your own
- 2:52land?
- 2:54Is there hardships in Ghana? Yes. Is
- 2:58there hardship in Nigeria? Yes. Is there
- 3:02hardships in all the African country?
- 3:04Yes.
- 3:07Do they point to their family members or
- 3:10to their community
- 3:12as the source of their hardship?
- 3:15No, you don't.
- 3:18But as soon as you move from that
- 3:19country and live in another country,
- 3:21suddenly the same natural hardship that
- 3:24you encountered in your own motherland,
- 3:27suddenly you're saying no, it's not
- 3:30supposed to happen to me. Let me give
- 3:33you the three levels that I have
- 3:34observed.
- 3:36In each family, in each family, same
- 3:39mother, same father, siblings, uncles,
- 3:43same family,
- 3:45you would see some would just become
- 3:49wealthy and successful from the same
- 3:51family among siblings. If you have five
- 3:55siblings, two becomes extremely
- 3:57successful. You can't even tell how they
- 3:59did it
- 4:02or one become successful.
- 4:06But you see the remaining siblings don't
- 4:10wake up and point fingers at the ones
- 4:12who became successful as the source of
- 4:14their condition. No, you don't do that.
- 4:19Right? So in a family unit, some become
- 4:23successful,
- 4:24some not successful. Always is a
- 4:27minority that become successful.
- 4:31The remaining siblings not successful.
- 4:33meaning the level now it's not
- 4:35contentment they may be content with
- 4:37their status but I'm saying what we have
- 4:39defined as successful they may not reach
- 4:42that point but they don't point fingers
- 4:45at their siblings as the cause of their
- 4:49level of success
- 4:51you move from that family unit it
- 4:53becomes a tribe in each tribe few are
- 4:56successful
- 4:59the majority not successful again I mean
- 5:02the level of achievement
- 5:04but you don't point fingers at those who
- 5:06are successful in the tribe to say they
- 5:09are the reason you are not successful.
- 5:12Let's go to the country now. The family
- 5:14level which is a unit of the tribe in
- 5:15the tribe and now of the country in each
- 5:18country on earth a few always a few in
- 5:22that country
- 5:24are successful and wealthy rich
- 5:28majority in the country not so let's
- 5:31take a place like Japan for example
- 5:33South Korea
- 5:35let's take a place like Poland Russia
- 5:39few are successful
- 5:42majority of the citizens not successful.
- 5:44But you see in Russia, in Poland, in
- 5:47South Korea, in Japan, in Singapore,
- 5:50the majority who are not successful do
- 5:52not point fingers to the few countrymen
- 5:55who are successful.
- 5:58Then you go to the world.
- 6:00Few countries are successful. Majority
- 6:04not successful.
- 6:06Ah, now there is a problem. Only at that
- 6:10point the unsuccessful countries begin
- 6:13to point fingers at the successful
- 6:15countries as the source of their
- 6:18unsuccessfulness.
- 6:21Let me repeat when it's on the family
- 6:24unit nobody points fingers at your
- 6:26siblings who are more successful than
- 6:28you. On the tribal level the same thing.
- 6:31In fact what we do as far as I remember
- 6:33and experience you show some s of
- 6:36admiration to the ones who have become
- 6:38successful
- 6:40and they in turn also know that yes we
- 6:42belong to the same community but you
- 6:44don't blame them for being the source of
- 6:47your unsuccessfulness right you move
- 6:49from the tribe to the country if you are
- 6:52all citizens of a particular country in
- 6:54Ghana for example few successful people
- 6:58the majority of Ghanaians don't go
- 6:59around every pointing fingers at the
- 7:02successful ones I don't mean politicians
- 7:04citizens and say because you're
- 7:06successful I'm not
- 7:09so if the level of accomplishment and
- 7:12success in a family level is always
- 7:15different never equal in a tribe always
- 7:18different in a country always different
- 7:21then of course
- 7:25it will be the same thing with countries
- 7:29then it becomes The same thing with
- 7:31continents.
- 7:33See some continents few are very very
- 7:36successful.
- 7:38The other continents are not successful
- 7:40as the other continents. Do you see it
- 7:43now? But why is it that when it becomes
- 7:46countries,
- 7:47it is only then the unsuccessful
- 7:50countries begin to point fingers at the
- 7:52successful countries and say you are the
- 7:54reason we are none. Oh, I forgot some of
- 7:56them are going to say because you came
- 7:57here and looted our natural resources. I
- 8:01have never seen a place where you stole
- 8:03one coconut and then the coconut tree
- 8:05got angry and refused to yield more
- 8:07coconuts.
- 8:09I have never seen a place because you
- 8:12took some palm trees and made a palm oil
- 8:14out of it and shipped it and made money
- 8:16and you didn't give me some of that
- 8:17money. Then all the palm trees became
- 8:20angry and do not yield palm nuts anymore
- 8:22in your land.
- 8:25That is the point I want you to think
- 8:26about.
- 8:28And these have happened over and over
- 8:31and over and over and it's hurting
- 8:33everyone to the point that the
- 8:36unsuccessful country citizens who move
- 8:38to quote the successful countries
- 8:40because they had this notion in their
- 8:42head before they moved there of course
- 8:44it won't just go away that's when when
- 8:47they arrive there they continue to say
- 8:50you are the reason at all I have to
- 8:51uproot myself from my natural
- 8:53environment to migrate to your country
- 8:56because you are the reason my country is
- 8:57poor in the first place.
- 9:00So that anger is eating you up.
- 9:04It will prevent you
- 9:07from being able to adapt which is
- 9:09necessary for you to do what God has
- 9:12given you to do. Your talent, your
- 9:14skills, your expertise, your
- 9:16determination,
- 9:18but that outsider is my source of my
- 9:23condition. You can never bypass it. It
- 9:26wouldn't even allow you to rethink.
- 9:30And then we start talking about it in
- 9:32the terms of, oh yes, that's why my
- 9:35forefathers were traumatized and that's
- 9:37why I'm traumatized.
- 9:40Dead people, dead people don't suffer
- 9:43trauma.
- 9:45Possessed people
- 9:48suffer disorientation.
- 9:51Those are the notes I put down
- 9:53yesterday.
- 9:55Dead people do not suffer trauma.
- 10:00Possessed people, they suffer
- 10:02disorientation which is far more
- 10:05dangerous
- 10:07than trauma.
- 10:09What is a possessed person? People are
- 10:12usually possessed by a political party
- 10:16and its ideology, simple ideologies. You
- 10:19are possessed by religious beliefs. You
- 10:21are possessed by tribal relationships.
- 10:25What is the difference between being
- 10:27possessed by these institutions or you
- 10:30possess them? This is the difference I
- 10:32wrote down. The difference is this. When
- 10:34you possess something, you can manage
- 10:38it, reorganize it and structured it to
- 10:42meet the times in which you see. So the
- 10:45restructuring is like rethinking because
- 10:48you possess it so you can manage it. You
- 10:51can organize it, reorganize it, and
- 10:54structure it continuously to meet the
- 10:56times.
- 10:59It's called adaptation
- 11:01because you possess it.
- 11:04If it's an ideology, if you possess it,
- 11:08you know that a certain part of this
- 11:10ideology was necessary a few years back
- 11:13just to meet the times. So you find it
- 11:16easy for you to reorganize it, rethink
- 11:18the ideology for the new times you live
- 11:21in. That is the only time I guarantee
- 11:23you, you are never going to have any
- 11:25depression, mental health,
- 11:26disorientation.
- 11:32If you are on the other hand, if you are
- 11:34possessed by an institution,
- 11:36it controls your thoughts, your
- 11:39movements and affiliation.
- 11:43If you are
- 11:45possessed by an institution
- 11:50then of course it possesses you.
- 11:54Anytime that institution's ideology, its
- 11:57agenda changes you change also because
- 12:00it possesses you.
- 12:02Whatever they say, you act it because it
- 12:05possesses you. Let's come to the two
- 12:07political parties of the United States
- 12:09of America, the Democrats and the
- 12:10Republicans. The question you need to
- 12:13ask yourself,
- 12:15I'm saying this today. This this topic
- 12:17is important.
- 12:20You can change it if you understand it
- 12:23for rethinking to happen. So there are
- 12:26two political parties in the United
- 12:28States.
- 12:30Neither is good or bad. No, not at all.
- 12:32There is nothing inherent in having an
- 12:35ideology by any political organization
- 12:38or institution or any institution for
- 12:41that matter. An agenda is useful
- 12:46as much as it can possess the people.
- 12:48All the people can possess it.
- 12:51Now when agenda possesses the people,
- 12:53you have chaos.
- 12:55When the people are trained and educated
- 12:57to know that the agenda was given to us
- 13:00to possess,
- 13:01you have order.
- 13:04So this is what you need to ask
- 13:06yourself. If you are a member of the
- 13:08Democratic Party, ask yourself, if you
- 13:11support it, if you're a member of it,
- 13:13are you possessed by the ideology of
- 13:16that party?
- 13:18Like Don Lemon and Joy Reed,
- 13:21the names are long. You can tell the
- 13:24anger with which they discuss simple
- 13:26things instead of them who claim they
- 13:27are journalists which they are not to
- 13:29discuss issues and present information
- 13:32and leave it for the public to use to
- 13:34rethink and to empower and to do things.
- 13:36No, no, no, no, no. You can see the
- 13:38anger on their face, the name calling,
- 13:40the fingerpointing that they are
- 13:42possessed by the ideology of the
- 13:44political organization.
- 13:48If you're a member of the Republican
- 13:49party, ask yourself, do you possess the
- 13:52ideology and the agenda of the party or
- 13:54it possesses you
- 13:57or you can tell? Just look at the way
- 14:00you talk about the other party. You know
- 14:02you are possessed. Look at the look at
- 14:04the way you beat your chest. Whenever
- 14:07somebody talks about the difference
- 14:09between their understanding and your
- 14:11understanding of the same ideology, you
- 14:13beat your chest, you clinch your teeth,
- 14:14you pull your hair, then you know you
- 14:17are possessed. Why? Of course. Have you
- 14:20seen people in a a voodoo uh uh um
- 14:25ritual? When we say the spirit possess
- 14:28people,
- 14:30they throw themselves on the ground,
- 14:32they shake violently,
- 14:35they foam at the mouth,
- 14:37and when they come around, they don't
- 14:40even know what happened or why they did
- 14:43it. That is possession. That's a
- 14:46spiritual possession.
- 14:48But I'm talking today for you to
- 14:50understand. As a human being, you are
- 14:53supposed to grow up after you are 18
- 14:55years old and you are called an adult.
- 14:56What is an adulthood anyway? It's now
- 14:59the ability to work and make money. That
- 15:01is not adulthood. Anybody can do that.
- 15:03We've seen kids as young as 12 in
- 15:05Vietnam and Africa working hard and
- 15:08taking care of siblings, but they're not
- 15:09adult. Not that is healthy.
- 15:12Adulthood is when you become a hero unto
- 15:15yourself. First and foremost,
- 15:18what is a hero unto yourself? meaning I
- 15:21make my own decisions. Meaning even when
- 15:24I have very strongly held opinions about
- 15:27things, I'm also very flexible to listen
- 15:30to the other people. And you know the
- 15:33best thing to do when you know you're a
- 15:34hero onto yourself that you pose
- 15:37questions to what they say instead of
- 15:40offering your own counter statements to
- 15:42what they say. Oh, that's when you have
- 15:44no result at all. statement, counter
- 15:46statement,
- 15:49cross-examination becomes our life.
- 15:53But if you are able to be so stoic and
- 15:58confident in what you know, what you
- 16:00hold on to, then when somebody comes
- 16:03with an opposing view, you don't share
- 16:06your views. You pose a question to their
- 16:09opposing views because you want to learn
- 16:13more or
- 16:15in the in the course of doing so you
- 16:19help them to rethink their position
- 16:21without you saying anything.
- 16:25But this say it, let me say it
- 16:28is not for heroes. It's for victims.
- 16:31Because you think if I don't repeat
- 16:35the phrases, the opinions, the limited
- 16:39phrases and opinions of my institution,
- 16:42my party, then I don't stand on
- 16:45anything.
- 16:47I'm empty. Yeah. Because you're
- 16:49possessed.
- 16:54I have said you got you can you can know
- 16:57it now. You're not going to lie to me.
- 16:59You're not going to lie to yourself. You
- 17:01just have to sit by yourself in your
- 17:04living room, pour your favorite wine and
- 17:06ask yourself, "How do I feel?
- 17:11How do I feel when I see a white man?"
- 17:13If you're black, what comes into your
- 17:15head? What words? Where did you get
- 17:17those words from? Did you hear it from
- 17:18Don Lemon? Did you hear it from the
- 17:21view? Ask yourself, where did they get
- 17:24into my head? So when I see these
- 17:27people, how do I feel?
- 17:30Do I start sweating?
- 17:33Does hatred creep into my head?
- 17:37Was there any time at all I was able to
- 17:39speak in defense of them?
- 17:44If you are not able to answer these
- 17:46questions,
- 17:47it's not because the answers are not
- 17:49there. It's because you are refusing to
- 17:52pause to rethink
- 17:55those who are able to do that.
- 17:58Today, the insurance companies are
- 18:00paying more money than they have ever
- 18:02paid in our lives in the treatment of
- 18:05mental health. But you see as as with
- 18:08everything unless you belong to the
- 18:09rethink family nobody is asking what is
- 18:12the root cause of the sudden explosion
- 18:16of mental health suicide. You know the
- 18:19only one of the things the media doesn't
- 18:21report is suicide because it's done
- 18:24privately
- 18:26and the family will call the ambulance
- 18:28the person goes to the hospital.
- 18:30Sometimes the police will just
- 18:32investigate and and make a
- 18:34determination. This has no foul plays.
- 18:36It's self-inflicted. So that doesn't
- 18:38make the front pages. But homicide on
- 18:41the other hand makes the front pages. So
- 18:43many people think that oh there are too
- 18:45many killings homicide.
- 18:48But suicide is huge because of mental
- 18:50health in this country.
- 18:53But you see when a conversation comes
- 18:55up, nobody's asking what is the root
- 18:57cause of mental health among as young as
- 19:0112 years old, 8 years old
- 19:05after they've eaten their favorite
- 19:07pancake made by mom in the morning. They
- 19:09have to pop maybe three bottles of pills
- 19:11each one every morning just to function
- 19:13in the primary school. But nobody's
- 19:16asking what is the source of it.
- 19:20They are possessed
- 19:23by what mom and dad keep yelling at the
- 19:27channel on the screen in the living
- 19:29room.
- 19:31It depend who comes on it.
- 19:35Who comes on it? Is it Candace? Is it
- 19:38Don Lemon? Is it Joy Reed?
- 19:41What books have you bought?
- 19:43What movies have these people made to
- 19:45feed their own children about past
- 19:48history? something that happened to my
- 19:50great greatgrandfathers who were taken
- 19:52from the continent of Africa brought
- 19:53here as slaves
- 19:58in that discussion yesterday I had with
- 20:00the group the private discussion
- 20:02somebody was trying so hard it wasn't my
- 20:05words to show that no the black slavery
- 20:09was the only worst thing ever on the
- 20:11surface of the earth to any one group of
- 20:14people
- 20:15and then he went in to make a concern
- 20:17somebody asked
- 20:18So what happened to Jews in Germany
- 20:20wasn't bad.
- 20:23I wasn't part of that. I don't jump in
- 20:26such conversations.
- 20:29So I asked them, why don't you just
- 20:30define and describe slavery and then you
- 20:36describe and define persecution two
- 20:39different things. Slavery is not
- 20:41persecution.
- 20:45What happened in Germany which is modern
- 20:47history the Jews were persecuted
- 20:52and that is why professor
- 20:54Rubenstein
- 20:57wrote to bigotry there is no sanction
- 21:02I think his 1976 or 81 book that went
- 21:06quite very popular among the academics
- 21:08who talk about the holocaust
- 21:11Richard Rubenstein look him
- 21:13Professor Richard Rubenstein, formerly
- 21:16of the department of political science
- 21:19Talahasi campus in Florida and later
- 21:22became the president of the University
- 21:23of Bridgeport. He wrote, well, he was a
- 21:26Jew whose father
- 21:29was in Oswidge
- 21:32to bigotry, no sanction. Persecution is
- 21:35not slavery. Slavery is not persecution.
- 21:39There is no comparison between the two.
- 21:42absolute horrible condition for any
- 21:44human being to be in. No one who wants
- 21:46to wake up and find himself saying I'm a
- 21:49property of somebody else which means he
- 21:51tells me what to do.
- 21:55He feeds me dietaries that I don't like.
- 21:58He makes me wear clothes I didn't
- 22:00choose. No, not at all. But you see as
- 22:04you all know whether is
- 22:07child slavery or whichever form of
- 22:10slavery the first definition is somebody
- 22:13owns you and people don't destroy their
- 22:16own properties they don't and since then
- 22:18they describe slavery as having an
- 22:21ownership people don't describe don't
- 22:23destroy their own properties
- 22:26slavery was an investment as horrible as
- 22:28it it was people's fear
- 22:32their fear and their agenda to survive
- 22:36and make their place great, look good
- 22:41and even make external environments
- 22:44great have to rely on slavery.
- 22:47So they went and they got people
- 22:51to come and use their labor to make
- 22:54their place great to work their farms,
- 22:56their homes.
- 22:58So they are your property and you pray
- 23:00that your property stays longer because
- 23:03it's an investment. You don't want it to
- 23:05die. Yes, of course. Those who attempted
- 23:08to escape or put up a rebellion just as
- 23:11it happens in everything they face very
- 23:13harsh treatment because they attempted
- 23:16to rebel or to run away or to fight.
- 23:19Yes, the owner is going to put up
- 23:23a very stringent conditions to tame you.
- 23:27Another horrible condition you'll find
- 23:29yourself. Persecution on the other hand
- 23:32is the harsh punishment, cruelty,
- 23:36imprisonment.
- 23:38You are given or fed one meal per day.
- 23:42You are kept in concentration camps.
- 23:46You can count their rips. They leave
- 23:48witnessing their own death slowly.
- 23:51They witness the death of their
- 23:52children, their loved ones right in
- 23:54front of them. not sharp slow because
- 23:58persecution is to de dehumanize you and
- 24:02finally you are extinct we don't want
- 24:04you here that is persecution
- 24:07Rwanda
- 24:09that was persecution visited upon the
- 24:11toothies
- 24:14Bosnia
- 24:16ethnic cleansing that was persecution of
- 24:19a people
- 24:21the gulaks of Russia
- 24:24what we called
- 24:27long hard hard labor camps.
- 24:33Those are persecutions.
- 24:35The Japanese persecuted people. You
- 24:38never want to live twice.
- 24:41You live in persecution with trauma
- 24:43every day because of what you witness.
- 24:46You pray that you die because the dead
- 24:49do not suffer trauma.
- 24:53And we have to rethink.
- 24:55We have to rethink because that is the
- 24:57only process right now guys to bring
- 25:00some sunage to our lives and reduce
- 25:03mental health affliction. We can
- 25:07when you begin to say things to
- 25:10yourself.
- 25:16There is something I'm going to share
- 25:17with you. a line I wrote and even myself
- 25:20I couldn't believe it just came into my
- 25:22look if anyone wants to mess with your
- 25:25heart ah don't be afraid broken hearts
- 25:28always heal
- 25:32the lyrics said sometimes with time it
- 25:35will heal
- 25:37you need a brain to heal a broken heart
- 25:41so when somebody wants to mess with your
- 25:43your heart don't worry about that what
- 25:46should you worry about is a broken brain
- 25:50because once your brain is broken is
- 25:53messed up with an ideology.
- 25:56You can't use the broken brain to fix
- 25:58the broken brain. That one is permanent.
- 26:01You may become a killer.
- 26:04You may become a mass murderer. You may
- 26:07become a mass killer.
- 26:10You can persecute people without feeling
- 26:12anything
- 26:16because you need another brain to repair
- 26:17the broken brain. But you see, you can't
- 26:19buy a brain to repair your broken brain.
- 26:21With the heart, you can use your brain
- 26:23since it's still intact
- 26:26to heal it, to correct it. What do you
- 26:29do? You come back inside.
- 26:33me.
- 26:35Sometimes
- 26:37I even offer myself for some people to
- 26:40mess with my heart.
- 26:43H it's a little romantic.
- 26:47It's even when you look at it a little
- 26:49bit erotic. Why? Why do I not suffer
- 26:53yet? Because sometimes
- 26:56I expect that one day it's going to
- 26:59happen. Somebody's going to mess with my
- 27:00heart. Why? Because I am an emotional
- 27:03human being. Every human being is an
- 27:05emotional human being. An emotional
- 27:07animal if you wish.
- 27:10So as long as we believe and we describe
- 27:14ourselves as emotional thing beings but
- 27:17the emotion has got to do with the heart
- 27:21not the heart that pumps a blood. We
- 27:23call it heart. That is the emotional
- 27:25part of you.
- 27:27Okay. Then it means somebody can touch
- 27:31it.
- 27:36I allow it sometimes intentionally. Yes.
- 27:41Just to test the strength of my brain,
- 27:44how fast I can repair it.
- 27:50You see, when you do a certain push-ups,
- 27:53very often the muscle grows stronger.
- 27:58Now what I mean by some people to mess
- 28:00with me emotionally or my heart means
- 28:03even I drive myself to places I know
- 28:06they are going to have a problem with my
- 28:08way of thinking my thoughts and the way
- 28:10I think. Yes, they're going to have a
- 28:11problem with it or I see it on the
- 28:13comment section and those are the ones I
- 28:16respond to always quickly. I need them
- 28:18in the comment section otherwise the
- 28:21whole thing is boring and fruitless. So
- 28:23I needed those who have hurt me
- 28:26to attack me.
- 28:30So sometimes I offer myself to places
- 28:32where I know they're going to go for my
- 28:34emotion. They know that oh Don Lemon
- 28:37he's possessed. He lives on the
- 28:39emotional sleeves of his own doing
- 28:45and others who appear on the others and
- 28:49they they
- 28:52call you names for dating somebody
- 28:54outside your race. Those ones they
- 28:56possessed. You can see on their face
- 29:00they need something.
- 29:03So I was talking to a very dear friend
- 29:04of mine
- 29:07and she shared something with me that
- 29:10touched me greatly
- 29:15and
- 29:17it was right.
- 29:20Let me go through something I wrote here
- 29:22or she wrote and sent to me.
- 29:29Something that originates
- 29:32outside us becomes so deeply
- 29:37embedded within us that we no longer
- 29:40recognize where it came from.
- 29:47We begin to think and we begin to craft
- 29:50the the foundation for something that
- 29:53happened outside us. Outside us means
- 29:56you don't control the agenda of the
- 29:58person who did it. You didn't sign up on
- 30:01it. You didn't participate on it. You
- 30:04were not even informed that they're
- 30:05going to do it to you. So you have no
- 30:07hand in it. That's what I it means it
- 30:10happened outside you. He or she has his
- 30:12own agenda.
- 30:14priorities
- 30:16and it happened to you. So somebody
- 30:18asked
- 30:20then how do we move on?
- 30:26No, you don't move on.
- 30:28You move in.
- 30:32You move in. What is move on? Meaning
- 30:34what? You change locations and leave the
- 30:36experience behind? No,
- 30:39it just comes with you like an Amazon
- 30:41package delivered to your new address.
- 30:46So you don't move on. Move on is a
- 30:48pretend that if I stop thinking, you
- 30:50can't stop thinking about it.
- 30:53No, you can't stop thinking about it.
- 30:58You move in.
- 31:00Moving in means you ask yourself
- 31:07why
- 31:08do I come to the conclusion I have come
- 31:10to about something that happened from
- 31:12outside that I have no hands in why am I
- 31:14making conclusions about it because your
- 31:17conclusions you think would temporarily
- 31:21free you and make people pity you but
- 31:25the more they pity you they are
- 31:27repeating what happened
- 31:31the more you talk about it because
- 31:33you're looking for ways to move on.
- 31:34There is no moving on. But when you move
- 31:37in, you say why? Not what he did, but
- 31:41how did it become possible? Why did I
- 31:44make these conclusions about the event
- 31:45that I have no control over?
- 31:49That is internalizing it to understand
- 31:51it,
- 31:54not embedding it in your system,
- 31:56internalizing it. You see, you are now
- 31:59questioning an event that has eaten some
- 32:01other people and including you. But now
- 32:03you are rethinking
- 32:05Okay. So when you look at the event and
- 32:07you forget about how unpleasant it was
- 32:11but begin to examine but why did I
- 32:13respond this way as a conclusion to this
- 32:15event? You ask yourself again
- 32:20is or are my reactions every day to it
- 32:22is it changing anything?
- 32:25Well that is up to you to decide because
- 32:27you can actually take stock of your
- 32:30feeling. Do you see the way you become
- 32:32depressed and angry whenever you see
- 32:34something that resembles what you
- 32:35thought or who you thought did this to
- 32:37me or to my people?
- 32:42Do you see the result? You're not happy
- 32:45just by seeing a white person cross the
- 32:47street. You're not happy just by hearing
- 32:50Zanu not go after white people and
- 32:52chastise them and repeat their history.
- 32:54You're not happy that some of you who go
- 32:57into my comment section keep saying,
- 32:59"Yeah, Zanu, I agree with you, but why
- 33:01can't you just talk about what
- 33:02happened?"
- 33:05Yeah. Oh, yeah. I did ask
- 33:09talk about it to do what? Who the hell
- 33:12am I to think that my existence on earth
- 33:15nothing unpleasant should ever happen to
- 33:17me or to any of my family members of my
- 33:20lineage? Who the hell am I to do that?
- 33:22Was I guaranteed that when I was born
- 33:24that nothing is going to go wrong? Which
- 33:26government guaranteed it? Which
- 33:28institution guaranteed that? No.
- 33:32The day I was put here without my
- 33:35application, I knew I'm going to fight
- 33:38my elbow through people who have similar
- 33:41emotions like me.
- 33:45So when I became an adult,
- 33:47I decided to be a hero unto myself.
- 33:50Heroes don't complain.
- 33:53Heroes don't point fingers. Heroes don't
- 33:56call names. Heroes don't repeat.
- 34:01They are unpleasant moments.
- 34:04Heroes are role models. How can a role
- 34:05model be complaining and calling people
- 34:07names and insulting people and yelling
- 34:09at people?
- 34:12And you're not a role model.
- 34:16Heroes are role models to themselves
- 34:17first and then to the larger community.
- 34:20So for that reason, no, I don't need to
- 34:23repeat
- 34:25the Japanese. Have you heard? Have you
- 34:27seen it? They do not celebrate Hiroshima
- 34:31and Nagasaki. They don't
- 34:35intelligent people, but it's a culture.
- 34:38They understand it in their cultural
- 34:39frame and worldview. You should not
- 34:42repeat it. Korea never celebrate
- 34:45independence of Japanese and how and
- 34:47make movies. Not a single movie. They
- 34:49would rather have a K-pop. Does that
- 34:51mean they haven't internalized it? They
- 34:54have. That is why now they have K-pop.
- 35:00You think Japan didn't internalize the
- 35:02dropping of atomic bomb on them? They
- 35:03did.
- 35:05But why haven't they maintained and
- 35:07polished and feed the animy? Because
- 35:10they have internalized it rather than
- 35:12attempting to move on.
- 35:16But my people, which means descendants
- 35:19of my great great greatgrandfathers who
- 35:21were harvested by force and cruel from
- 35:24Africa and made slaves on this place. We
- 35:27have kept
- 35:29the narrative alive through movies,
- 35:31through books, through organizations
- 35:34with fist pumping in the air.
- 35:37Black lives matter to continue feed and
- 35:41feed. So you see you're doing all these
- 35:43thinking I will move away because you
- 35:47live your life forever
- 35:49relying and waiting on an external
- 35:52system to feed a problem that you think
- 35:56belong to you solely. And that my
- 35:59friends
- 36:01is the extension
- 36:03of the suffering and what we are calling
- 36:06trauma.
- 36:10And boy,
- 36:1216 year olds can stab you and kill you.
- 36:18Oh boy, that you do not even have the
- 36:22right to choose who you want to love and
- 36:25marry if it's not from your the same
- 36:27race. You have betrayed us. You have
- 36:30betrayed us because you allow your heart
- 36:32to love somebody not based on their skin
- 36:35color. You have betrayed us. But what is
- 36:37funny is few years back we stormed this
- 36:41land raising our finger in the face of
- 36:43the white man telling him don't judge me
- 36:46based on the color of my skin but the
- 36:48content of my character
- 36:51but you were not satisfied because those
- 36:53were empty words because first and
- 36:56foremost they were not judging you based
- 36:58on the color of your skin. You see, so
- 37:00you didn't find any satisfaction
- 37:03in that statement you made
- 37:07because if you believe that one should
- 37:10never be judged by the content of his by
- 37:13the color of his skin, then why are you
- 37:15angry that I am dating a white woman,
- 37:18you are judging me now based on my love
- 37:21for a different skin color. So you
- 37:24actually are the one who is saying judge
- 37:28me by the skin color
- 37:34otherwise
- 37:36why did you follow MLK and his people to
- 37:40chant don't judge a man oh it became the
- 37:43most sweetest slogan and anthem the
- 37:45black person could ever sing.
- 37:49Don't judge me based on the color of my
- 37:50skin.
- 37:53If that were true and you believed it,
- 37:56you wouldn't be going around calling
- 37:57people snow bunnies and accusing them
- 38:00and demeaning them, almost making them
- 38:02to become a target of hate.
- 38:08You are saying things are judged to the
- 38:12point it is so ridiculous that we cry.
- 38:16The reason panafricanism is people are
- 38:18joining it is because we are saying
- 38:20blacks do not unite. Blacks are not
- 38:22united.
- 38:25But you see even though blacks know that
- 38:28they are not united
- 38:30but they are the most scared one to be
- 38:32different.
- 38:34So ask a black guy on camera do you like
- 38:37Trump?
- 38:39Oh yes, deep down he does or respect him
- 38:42or accept him as a president, but I
- 38:44can't say it because I'll be rejected.
- 38:47Well, there is no unity among the people
- 38:49in the first place. What what are they
- 38:50rejecting anyway? What are what are you
- 38:52afraid?
- 38:55So Nicki Mina simply went on a campaign
- 38:58trail and said, "We love Trump, a
- 39:01president of the United States, a
- 39:03citizen of the United States. She's a
- 39:06citizen of the United States." And she
- 39:08simply say if one becomes president and
- 39:10belongs to a certain ideology I identify
- 39:12with it I can say we love Trump.
- 39:16Oh my god the whole internet is burning.
- 39:23But if she had said
- 39:25we love Kamala Harris
- 39:29White attacked Nicki Minaj. How? Because
- 39:33they internalize everything
- 39:36and nobody would attack her for saying
- 39:39Nicki Mina says she loves Camela Harris.
- 39:42Oh, but Cardi B could say she's fine.
- 39:46Think of it. That is where we are.
- 39:50Rethink is your medication.
- 39:57You have to
- 39:59you have to really rethink. So let me
- 40:01repeat from today when they say the name
- 40:05of a person Donald Trump, Kamala Harris,
- 40:09uh who else? Anybody just close your
- 40:13eyes and think when you see somebody
- 40:16wearing a MAGA hat, close your eyes and
- 40:19ask yourself what is happening inside
- 40:20you. When you see a white man crossing
- 40:23the street,
- 40:24immediately close your eyes, ask
- 40:26yourself. When you hear something that
- 40:28seems to be one of the agenda of the
- 40:31Republican party, close your eyes and
- 40:33ask, you would know if you are
- 40:35possessed.
- 40:38But when you can sit across a table and
- 40:40talk about two groups equally, you see
- 40:43good in the other one, you see good in
- 40:44this one.
- 40:48And if you don't see it at all, but you
- 40:51can sit and listen to it.
- 40:53And to make the person know that you're
- 40:55a hero onto yourself, you don't
- 40:58immediately
- 41:00present your own narrative.
- 41:02You make him or her feel empowered by
- 41:05throwing questions at the conclusions he
- 41:07or she has just shared with you. My
- 41:10friends, that is a rethinker. That is a
- 41:14man who is trying to level your mental
- 41:16health for your children and your loved
- 41:18one and your family and your community.
- 41:24If we can only if you can only determine
- 41:28are you possessed or do you possess
- 41:32because heroes they possess they don't
- 41:35hang on to it.
- 41:38They can organize it, manage it,
- 41:40reorganize it, always with the times.
- 41:44That is truly a liberal mind.
- 41:49When Bob Marley said, "Emmancipate
- 41:51yourself from mental slavery." Oh my
- 41:53god, did we love that? We love it. You
- 41:56know why we loved it? Because all of us
- 41:59thought he was talking about him, not
- 42:01me. And then he thought, "Oh, but Mali
- 42:03is talking about him, not me." So
- 42:05everybody, it's not me. He's talking
- 42:07about it's you because I've seen you and
- 42:10I disagree with the way you think. But
- 42:12nobody asks Bob Mali or the people who
- 42:15repeat these lyrics.
- 42:18How did he say you should do it? How did
- 42:21he tell you to emancipate? How did he
- 42:23tell you? Your brain is already broken
- 42:25as I said and you can't use a broken
- 42:27brain to fix itself. So did you ask Bob
- 42:30Mali how does one emancipate himself?
- 42:36How does it happen?
- 42:40I think you've seen the answer already
- 42:42in my previous discussions.
- 42:48There is no process to say, "Oh, today
- 42:52the question is are you going to attempt
- 42:54it because you truly believe that you
- 42:57have not emancipated yourself?" Then
- 42:59that is what you can say. What should I
- 43:01do to emancipate? Would you accept that
- 43:05you're a mental slave? No, you wouldn't.
- 43:09But you like the song. So, who is he
- 43:11talking about?
- 43:16Emancipating yourself is simple.
- 43:19You check to see how you respond to
- 43:21opposing views and opinions. You check
- 43:24to see how you react and respond. When
- 43:28you see people of a certain race, color
- 43:33that will tell you if you are possessed.
- 43:37And what he saying is
- 43:39try and become the possessor. That's all
- 43:43the emancipation simply means you know
- 43:45what I'm not going to leave the
- 43:47ideology. I'm not going to leave the
- 43:48Democratic party, but I'm going to
- 43:50possess the agenda. I'm going to possess
- 43:52the ideology which means I will
- 43:54understand it deeper than what just I
- 43:57heard
- 43:58and you can only do so my friend by
- 44:01crossing over to talk to people who have
- 44:03an opposing view.
