Full transcript
- 0:00now we continue this evening you
- 0:02remember with our consideration of the
- 0:04biblical doctrine of redemption or the
- 0:07biblical doctrine of
- 0:11salvation we reminded one another last
- 0:13week that uh men having failed to keep
- 0:18God's La commandment had fallen and had
- 0:21become the slave of Satan and dead in
- 0:24trespasses and in sins and that had he
- 0:27been left to himself his condition would
- 0:29have been entirely hopeless but God in
- 0:32his infinite grace and love and
- 0:35mercy had looked upon men in
- 0:37pity and had informed him of this great
- 0:41plan and purpose of Salvation and of
- 0:44redemption and last Friday evening we
- 0:47considered the characters and
- 0:49characteristics of this great Plan of
- 0:51Redemption in
- 0:53general I ended by saying that God had
- 0:57revealed this plan of Redemption and of
- 1:00Salvation to
- 1:02men in the form of a a covenant that he
- 1:06had made with
- 1:07men and this is commonly called The
- 1:11Covenant of redemption or the Covenant
- 1:15of
- 1:16Salvation and that is to be our special
- 1:19theme this evening the way in which God
- 1:23has made known to men and has revealed
- 1:25to men this gracious purpose of his to
- 1:29save
- 1:31men from his guilt and from his
- 1:35pollution which have resulted from Men's
- 1:38listening to the suggestion of Satan and
- 1:41thereby leading to the
- 1:44fall now the great word we've got to
- 1:47consider tonight is this word
- 1:50covenant you noticed that God used it in
- 1:52his speaking to Abram as we found it
- 1:56there in the 17th chapter of the Book of
- 1:58Genesis what is a
- 2:01covenant well a covenant can be defined
- 2:04as
- 2:05a an agreement or a
- 2:08PCT which is entered into by two
- 2:13parties uh the two parties being more or
- 2:18less on an equal footing that is the
- 2:21normal customary definition of a
- 2:24covenant you can make a covenant today
- 2:27people do make covenants they make
- 2:29Covenants
- 2:30with respect to giving gifts towards
- 2:32good
- 2:33causes there's such a thing as the
- 2:35Covenant of the League of Nations the
- 2:37Covenant of the United
- 2:39Nations it means an agreement or a PCT
- 2:43entered into by two parties which
- 2:46normally and generally are more or less
- 2:48on an equal footing and of an equal
- 2:52standing a covenant is generally
- 2:54confirmed by some kind of solemn
- 2:58ceremony
- 3:00as in the presence of God you either
- 3:03take a earth or there is a religious
- 3:06service or something to that effect it
- 3:09is confirmed in some shape or form in
- 3:12this most solemn way in the presence of
- 3:16God and in the Covenant each party of
- 3:18course binds himself to the Fulfillment
- 3:22of certain
- 3:24promises on the basis of certain
- 3:28conditions that's a good Rough and Ready
- 3:31definition of a
- 3:34covenant but obviously when you come to
- 3:37speak of a covenant between God and
- 3:40man you uh have to realize that there
- 3:43are certain
- 3:44modifications of that customary idea of
- 3:47the word covenant now in the Bible you
- 3:49will find covenants made between men
- 3:51David and Jonathan you remember made a
- 3:53covenant and they were doing it on this
- 3:56basis of equality but when you come to
- 3:58God and Men C
- 4:01there is of necessity a
- 4:04difference and this difference appears
- 4:08especially in the authorized version of
- 4:11the Bible in this
- 4:13way that the word is sometimes
- 4:15translated as Testament and not as
- 4:19Covenant so you find out talking about
- 4:21the Old Testament and the New
- 4:24Testament and in other places you will
- 4:26find the word testament you will find it
- 4:29here for instance in The Second Epistle
- 4:30to the Corinthians and in the third
- 4:33chapter now it is generally agreed that
- 4:36this word which stands for this
- 4:40idea should always be translated as
- 4:44Covenant except in one instance and the
- 4:47one exception is Hebrews
- 4:509
- 4:51uh: 16 and
- 4:5417 where clearly it must be translated
- 4:57as Testament
- 4:59for it refers to a person dying and as
- 5:02it were making a will it's last it is
- 5:04his last will and
- 5:06testament but apart from that one
- 5:09instance uh in Hebrews 9:16 and
- 5:1317 you will find that the other
- 5:16translations the this uh much advertised
- 5:19revised Standard Version does translated
- 5:23always as
- 5:24Covenant rather than as Testament except
- 5:27in this one
- 5:28instance but in the authorized version
- 5:31you will find Testament sometimes
- 5:33Covenant at other times now I'm
- 5:36referring to that for this
- 5:38reason the translators of the authorized
- 5:40version had a very definite object in
- 5:42view when they used this word
- 5:45testament they did so of course to
- 5:48emphasize the priority of God when God
- 5:52makes a covenant with men it isn't to
- 5:54equal Partners meeting it is God giving
- 5:58as it were his Covenant to men so they
- 6:01thought well now that's more like a
- 6:02testament than a covenant so they chose
- 6:05to use the word testament strictly
- 6:08speaking they were wrong in doing so but
- 6:10they certainly did emphasize this idea
- 6:13of the priority of God as over against
- 6:17men as an
- 6:18equal they did it also of course because
- 6:22they could see very clearly that in that
- 6:24case in Hebrews 9 it is a
- 6:26testament and as it can be argued that
- 6:29ultimately
- 6:30all the blessings that do come to us
- 6:32under God's Covenant of Grace with men
- 6:35come as the result of the death of the
- 6:37Lord Jesus Christ there is a sense in
- 6:41which we do inherit everything as the
- 6:43result of his last Testament so there
- 6:46was that much A din it to be said for
- 6:49them and then no doubt they were partly
- 6:51influenced by the fact that the Latin
- 6:53word for all this is
- 6:55testimonial and they were dependent
- 6:57partly upon the Latin translation
- 7:00of the scriptures
- 7:02however the thing then that we must keep
- 7:05in mind is
- 7:06that the priority of God is to be
- 7:09emphasized it is a gift from God which
- 7:12has been ushered in by the death of
- 7:14Christ and because it comes from God it
- 7:17is something which is certain and
- 7:20inviolable and
- 7:23unbreakable and yet we must hold on to
- 7:26this idea of a
- 7:28covenant because God in his wonderful
- 7:31love and grace and
- 7:33condescension has chosen to reveal his
- 7:36purposes in this particular way he calls
- 7:40men to him and he chooses to make an
- 7:42agreement with men God needn't have done
- 7:45that but he has done so in spite of
- 7:48man's rebellion and his sin and his
- 7:50arrogance God as it where us called him
- 7:53in and have said I want to make an
- 7:54agreement with you there is nothing
- 7:57therefore in a way that ch displays the
- 8:00wonderful love and grace and kindness
- 8:04and condescension of God so much as this
- 8:07teaching in the Bible with regard to his
- 8:09making covenants with men now we've
- 8:14already
- 8:15seen that God originally made a covenant
- 8:18with
- 8:19Adam you remember that he put him in the
- 8:22garden and he told him that if he did
- 8:23certain things he would have a certain
- 8:26reward now that is called the Covenant
- 8:29of
- 8:30works because
- 8:32Adam's inheritance of This Promise God
- 8:35made to him was entirely dependent upon
- 8:37his Works upon what he
- 8:40did but you remember we've seen that
- 8:43Adam broke the Covenant he fell and
- 8:47landed himself and his posterity in the
- 8:50terrible plight that we have been
- 8:52describing now from there
- 8:56on God has made a new covenant and it is
- 9:00this Covenant of
- 9:02Grace clearly God could not make another
- 9:05Covenant of works with men if men in an
- 9:08ideal position and while perfect
- 9:11couldn't keep the Covenant of
- 9:13Works what is the object of making
- 9:15another Covenant of works with men it's
- 9:18clearly Impossible by
- 9:20definition and the Bible tells us that
- 9:23God has not made another Covenant of
- 9:24works but he has made what is called
- 9:27this Covenant
- 9:30of
- 9:31Grace and yet in the Covenant of Grace
- 9:35God has introduced certain
- 9:38conditions he has made his
- 9:41promises he has told us what he is
- 9:43making possible for us but he does make
- 9:47a demand upon us he tells us that we are
- 9:50only going to receive and enjoy these
- 9:52promises un certain
- 9:55condition and that is the condition of
- 9:57faith and men has to accept these
- 10:00conditions voluntarily before he will
- 10:02enjoy the
- 10:04blessings but
- 10:07furthermore God has also told us in the
- 10:10Covenant of Grace that he himself is
- 10:14going to do something which makes it
- 10:16possible for us to derive these benefits
- 10:20and that is why it is called the
- 10:21Covenant of
- 10:24Grace now then let me divide that up a
- 10:27little
- 10:29God is say has made certain promises
- 10:32what is the Great Central promise that
- 10:34God has made to men in the Covenant of
- 10:37Grace well you know it really can be put
- 10:39in this way he has promised to be a god
- 10:43unto
- 10:44men that's the great promise I will be a
- 10:48god unto
- 10:49thee now you see the importance and the
- 10:52significance of
- 10:54this God had been the god of Adam but
- 10:59here Adam sins against him and
- 11:02Falls becomes the slave of Satan breaks
- 11:06the connection with
- 11:07God and the remarkable and astounding
- 11:10thing is that God turns to men and
- 11:12assures him in the Covenant of Grace
- 11:15that he is going to find a way that he
- 11:17has a way whereby he can still be a God
- 11:22to men I will be to thee a God and they
- 11:25shall be to me a people now make a note
- 11:28of that because as you go through your
- 11:31scriptures you will find that that is
- 11:33the great promise that is repeated time
- 11:36and time and time again you'll find it
- 11:38in Jeremiah 31 you'll find it again in
- 11:42Jeremiah 32 you'll find it in Ezekiel 34
- 11:45and 36 you'll find it in 2 Corinthians 6
- 11:50you'll find it in Hebrews 8 and in verse
- 11:5310 and in the most marvelous way in
- 11:56Revelations 21 and the 3rd verse you
- 11:59read read
- 12:00this the Tabernacle of God is with men
- 12:05and he will dwell with them that's in
- 12:09the final
- 12:11state so you see that that is the very
- 12:14essence of God's promise to men in the
- 12:17Covenant of
- 12:18Grace that what had become broken by sin
- 12:21and the
- 12:22fall is going to be
- 12:24restored and the Supreme blessing
- 12:27therefore the ultimate blessing the
- 12:31blessing of blessings is that God is my
- 12:35God and that I have a right to say my
- 12:39God now the whole of Salvation is
- 12:42included in
- 12:43that I mustn't turn aside to emphasize
- 12:46that tonight but how often do we forget
- 12:49that how often do we tend to Define
- 12:52salvation in other terms rather than
- 12:54that but the greatest thing a human
- 12:57being can ever say since the fall
- 13:01is this God is my God my God and that
- 13:07you know for certain that God is saying
- 13:09to you I am thy God I will be to thee a
- 13:15God there is nothing greater than that
- 13:18it is the greatest blessing of all that
- 13:20is what God has promised but it also
- 13:23includes certain other things God has
- 13:26promised certain temporal blessings as
- 13:28well well as spiritual
- 13:30blessings he promised those especially
- 13:33under the old dispensation and let us
- 13:35never forget that the temporal blessings
- 13:38are meant to be pictures of and to
- 13:40symbolize the spiritual blessings he has
- 13:43also promised obviously a way of
- 13:46justification God cannot be my God and I
- 13:49cannot say my God unless I'm Justified
- 13:51unless my sin is
- 13:53Forgiven unless my sin is removed unless
- 13:57I am adopted and made a child of God
- 13:59it's all implicit in the promise that
- 14:02God is to be my
- 14:04God indeed it includes the promise of
- 14:06life
- 14:07eternal it obviously includes the giving
- 14:10of the spirit and the full application
- 14:13and working out of redemption in me in
- 14:16the matter of sanctification and my
- 14:18ultimate
- 14:21glorification so that the promises you
- 14:23see in the Covenant of Grace rarely
- 14:27include everything
- 14:30and man is called upon to respond to
- 14:32this by
- 14:34Faith by the desire for all this and by
- 14:38his faithfulness and obedience to God in
- 14:41these new
- 14:42conditions shall I try to give you an
- 14:46Omnibus definition of what we mean then
- 14:48by the Covenant of Grace we can put it
- 14:51like
- 14:52this the Covenant of
- 14:54Grace is that
- 14:57Arrangement between the Triune
- 15:01God and his
- 15:03people whereby God carries out his
- 15:07eternal purpose and decree of
- 15:10redemption by promising his
- 15:14friendship
- 15:16hence he promises full and free
- 15:20salvation to his
- 15:22people upon the basis of the vicarious
- 15:26atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ
- 15:29Christ who is the mediator of the
- 15:32Covenant and his people accept this
- 15:36salvation by faith that's it it includes
- 15:40all that it is the promise of God's
- 15:43friendship is being our God that we can
- 15:46enter into intimate relationships with
- 15:48him and know him and it is all made
- 15:51possible by Jesus Christ who is the
- 15:54mediator of this
- 15:56Covenant and we enter into it by faith
- 16:00now that's the Covenant of Grace the
- 16:02Covenant if you like of
- 16:05redemption as worked out for
- 16:09men now the thing I want to spend my
- 16:12time on tonight is
- 16:14this this great
- 16:17Covenant which God has made with men
- 16:20this Covenant of
- 16:22Grace can be divided up into two
- 16:27dispensations or if you prefer it two
- 16:31administrations this one great Covenant
- 16:34of
- 16:35Grace is administered and has been
- 16:38administered in two main different ways
- 16:42the way that is described in the Old
- 16:44Testament the way that is described in
- 16:46the New
- 16:47Testament you notice what I'm saying I
- 16:51am saying that there is only one
- 16:52Covenant of Grace I hope before I finish
- 16:55tonight to prove that to you I'm simply
- 16:57saying it at the moment
- 16:59there is only one Covenant of Grace but
- 17:02it has been
- 17:03administered in two main ways two main
- 17:08dispensations of the one Covenant the
- 17:11old and the new now let us glance at
- 17:16these what are the ways in which the
- 17:18Covenant of Grace has been
- 17:21dispensed under the old
- 17:24dispensation well you've go first of all
- 17:27to Genesis
- 17:303150 I mentioned it last Friday evening
- 17:33if you're interested in the technical
- 17:35term it is generally called the pro
- 17:38Evangel p r o t Evangel one word the pro
- 17:45Evangel in other words there is a kind
- 17:48of uh foreshadowing of the whole gospel
- 17:52in Genesis
- 17:543:15 now this really is to me one of the
- 17:58most fascinating and thrilling things a
- 18:01men can ever encounter here's this great
- 18:03book which we divide up and we call it
- 18:06the Old Testament and the New Testament
- 18:09well we all know what we mean by that
- 18:11but you know if we were to be strictly
- 18:13accurate we would not describe it in
- 18:15that
- 18:18way the real division of the Bible is
- 18:23this everything you get from Genesis
- 18:271:1 to Genesis
- 18:29314 that's one division of the
- 18:32Bible from Genesis 3:15 to the very
- 18:38end is the remainder that's the true
- 18:42division what you've got up until
- 18:44Genesis
- 18:463:14 is the account of the creation and
- 18:49of God's original Covenant of works with
- 18:51men and of how that failed because men
- 18:53broke
- 18:54it beginning with Genesis
- 18:573:15 you get the announcement of the
- 19:00Gospel the Covenant of Grace the way of
- 19:02Salvation and it's the whole theme of
- 19:04The Bible until you come to the last
- 19:06verse of the Book of
- 19:08Revelations that in a
- 19:10sense is the real
- 19:13division of the Bible but of course we
- 19:17to talk about Old Testament and New
- 19:20Testament because we want to
- 19:23emphasize the two main different ways in
- 19:26which this one great Covenant of Grace
- 19:28has been administered but here it is
- 19:30beginning in Genesis 3:15 and I will put
- 19:33enmity between thee and the woman and
- 19:36between uh her thy seed and her seed it
- 19:41shall bruise thy head and thy it shall
- 19:45bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise
- 19:49his heat now the whole of the Gospel is
- 19:53there it's there in this almost cryptic
- 19:56form in this very immature form but the
- 20:00whole of the Gospel is there let me work
- 20:02it out with you what does that tell
- 20:05us well God tells us first of all that
- 20:08he's going to put enity between The
- 20:09Serpent and the woman and her
- 20:12se you see hither to there had been no
- 20:15enmity between them but the serpent had
- 20:18beguiled Eve and they were very friendly
- 20:21together and the woman was now under the
- 20:24Dominion of the devil and had God done
- 20:27nothing that would have been the
- 20:28remainder of the store but God comes in
- 20:30and he says no I'm going to break that
- 20:34friendship you were meant for friendship
- 20:36with me not with the devil so I'm going
- 20:39to put enmity between you and the devil
- 20:42and between the devil and you that's the
- 20:44first announcement of
- 20:46Salvation because man can't be saved
- 20:49while he's a Friend of the Devil and an
- 20:50enemy of God he must be a friend of God
- 20:53therefore he must become an enemy of the
- 20:54devil God says he's going to do
- 20:57that the the second thing therefore that
- 20:59is implied is this that God is going to
- 21:02give men power and Grace to fight the
- 21:05Devil he's already been defeated by him
- 21:08and he is his slave he must have help
- 21:10and strength God promises it indeed God
- 21:13obviously promises to be on man's side
- 21:16in this fight and in this quarrel
- 21:18against the
- 21:20enemy he applies the promise also to the
- 21:23sea to thee and to thy sea that is most
- 21:27important it wasn't a temporary promise
- 21:30given there in Eden it is to continue
- 21:33until it has achieved its ultimate
- 21:35purpose you notice also that he says
- 21:38that the quarrel is to go on not only
- 21:41between the woman and her seed and the
- 21:43devil but also between the seed of the
- 21:46woman and the seed of the
- 21:49serpent in other words mankind is here
- 21:52divided into two
- 21:54sections those who do not belong to
- 21:56Christ belong to the devil they are the
- 21:59children of the devil they are the seed
- 22:00of the devil so Humanity can be divided
- 22:04into the seed of Garden of Christ and
- 22:07the seed of the devil and there is a
- 22:10fight and a quarrel between them all
- 22:12announced in Genesis
- 22:143:15 then you notice that we are given
- 22:16the promise there of the certainty of
- 22:19the Triumph of God and his way the
- 22:22serpent is going to be bruised his head
- 22:25is going to be bruised he's going to be
- 22:27destroyed can't you see there a
- 22:29prefiguring of Calvary it was there he
- 22:32was put to an open shame it was there he
- 22:34was defeated all promised in the Pro
- 22:37Evangel and ultimately there is this
- 22:41idea which we can see so clearly in the
- 22:43light of subsequent scripture that the
- 22:45real seed of the woman is none other
- 22:48finally than the Lord Jesus Christ
- 22:51himself now there is the first
- 22:54announcement of this
- 22:55Covenant he doesn't call it a covenant
- 22:58at that point but it is a foreshadowing
- 23:00of the Covenant that later was made more
- 23:04explicit but let us come secondly to the
- 23:07covenant made with no you'll find that
- 23:10described in the ninth chapter of the
- 23:12Book of
- 23:13Genesis After the
- 23:15flood what do we find here well God
- 23:18promises here that he will never destroy
- 23:20the Earth again and All Flesh by means
- 23:23of
- 23:24water he promises there will never be a
- 23:26return of such a flood which will
- 23:28destroy the earth and its
- 23:31peoples he furthermore guarantees and
- 23:33promises that there shall always be a
- 23:36succession of seed time and harvest cold
- 23:39and heat summer and winter day and
- 23:43night God promised that that should
- 23:46continue come what
- 23:48may he also there promised that the
- 23:50forces of nature should be brighted and
- 23:54controlled in other words the effects
- 23:56and results of sin and the fall are are
- 23:58given a certain check they're held in in
- 24:01the promise in the covenant made with
- 24:04Noah in the same way the powers of evil
- 24:07are put under a greater
- 24:10restraint man uh is not allowed to be as
- 24:14violent as he had been and as he'd like
- 24:17to be against other men man is protected
- 24:20against the violence both of men himself
- 24:22and of
- 24:23beasts you read it for yourselves in
- 24:26Genesis 9 and it was all confirmed and
- 24:29sealed by the sign of the rainbow in the
- 24:35cloud now the thing I want to emphasize
- 24:37here is this the covenant made with
- 24:42Noah is not a New Covenant of
- 24:46Grace the Covenant of Grace is there
- 24:49adumbrated in Genesis 3:15 this doesn't
- 24:52interfere with it at all it simply
- 24:54introduces certain subsidiary promises
- 24:57and legisl
- 24:59it isn't a New Covenant in the ultimate
- 25:01sense of Grace and of
- 25:03redemption it is simply a temporary
- 25:06legislation what is sometimes called
- 25:09even common Grace as distinct from the
- 25:12special Grace which ures our spiritual
- 25:16salvation but let me hurry on to the
- 25:18third which is the Covenant as made with
- 25:21Abraham now that's what you find in
- 25:23Genesis 17 and which we read at the
- 25:26beginning now it is here that God first
- 25:32explicitly and clearly states his
- 25:36purposes of redemption in the exact form
- 25:39of a
- 25:40covenant he made that Covenant with
- 25:43Abram what do we find
- 25:45here well we find that here for the
- 25:48first time in any definite
- 25:51manner you get the beginning of a kind
- 25:53of
- 25:54church there is a separation as between
- 25:58the church the people who belong to God
- 26:00and those who belong to the
- 26:03world there had been a kind of family
- 26:06worship before and in men's house houses
- 26:08and so on but there's something new
- 26:11introduced in the Covenant with Abram he
- 26:14chooses a particular man a particular
- 26:16family and he makes a promise to Abram
- 26:19and his descendants in particular and to
- 26:22nobody
- 26:23else there is this separation there is
- 26:26the formation of a unique body
- 26:28as special people of God most
- 26:32important you noticed also the emphasis
- 26:35that was placed upon Abraham's faith
- 26:38upon his
- 26:39response it is by his faith he enters
- 26:42into the Covenant and begins to receive
- 26:44the benefits and the
- 26:46blessings and you notice the spiritual
- 26:49character of the blessings that were
- 26:51promised him over and above the promise
- 26:54concerning the land
- 26:56Etc there is this great promise of a
- 26:59spiritual seed that all the nations of
- 27:01the world are finally going to be
- 27:03blessed in him now if you want to work
- 27:06that out you just read Romans chapters 3
- 27:104 and 5 the epistle to the Romans
- 27:13chapters 3 4 and 5 and the third chapter
- 27:16of the epistle to the Galatians which
- 27:18I'm going to quote in a moment you see
- 27:20that there God was really giving Abram
- 27:24justification we are told in the epistle
- 27:26to the Romans that Abram was justified
- 27:29by his faith justified in a spiritual
- 27:32sense and became the father of all the
- 27:34faithful and the father of all believers
- 27:38he was justified from sin he was
- 27:39forgiven he was adopted into God's
- 27:42family and thus he becomes the father of
- 27:44all who believe all was there promised
- 27:47to him by
- 27:49Covenant and then I say that in addition
- 27:51there were those temporal blessings
- 27:56also now we can never place too much
- 28:01emphasis upon the covenant made with
- 28:03Abram you keep your eye on the
- 28:05references back to that in the
- 28:07subsequent parts of the Bible you'll
- 28:10find that it's absolutely crucial it is
- 28:13the great explicit original promise
- 28:16which God made hinted at Adam brated in
- 28:19Genesis 3 and 15 but here stated
- 28:23explicitly in Covenant form then I must
- 28:27hurry on of course
- 28:28to the Covenant which was made of sin
- 28:31the sintic
- 28:32Covenant the Covenant that was made
- 28:34through
- 28:35Moses which you will find in Exodus
- 28:38chapters 19 and
- 28:41following now this is most
- 28:44important what do we find
- 28:47here well here the emphasis is placed
- 28:51especially upon the fact that this
- 28:53Covenant is a national
- 28:56Covenant from here on the church and the
- 28:59nation become
- 29:01one and to belong to the nation of
- 29:03Israel means to belong to the church and
- 29:06you couldn't be put out of the church
- 29:07without be putting out of the nation a
- 29:09man who transgressed the law was put to
- 29:12death he wasn't merely punished in a
- 29:14spiritual sense he was literally put out
- 29:17of put to death put out of existence put
- 29:19out of the nation as
- 29:22well then of course great prominence is
- 29:25given here to the giving of the law
- 29:29but I do want to make this very plain
- 29:30and clear that the giving of the Lord
- 29:33does not mean in any sense whatsoever
- 29:36that God is establishing a covenant of
- 29:39works with men
- 29:40again I've already pointed out to you
- 29:43that that becomes a sure
- 29:45impossibility what is the point I ask
- 29:47again of making a covenant of works of
- 29:50telling a man that he can save himself
- 29:52if he does certain things when men had
- 29:54failed to do that in Paradise no the
- 29:57giving of the Lord La does not mean a
- 29:59return to a covenant of works the
- 30:01children of Israel made the terrible
- 30:03mistake of thinking it did but that was
- 30:05their error it doesn't mean that it was
- 30:08simply given in order that the life of
- 30:10the nation should be regulated in
- 30:14certain respects and also for certain
- 30:16other reasons which I'm about to
- 30:19mention we had introduced here also the
- 30:23ceremonial and all the typical
- 30:26sacrifices and is in connection with the
- 30:30temple the burnt offerings and the
- 30:32various other offerings the appointment
- 30:35of a separated
- 30:37priesthood certain people set apart as
- 30:41priests and we have also the uh
- 30:44promulgation of the fact that the gospel
- 30:47the great Covenant of Grace is to be
- 30:49preached now in symbols and in
- 30:53types and these are meant to show us the
- 30:56demands of God upon us
- 30:58and also at the same time to remind us
- 31:01of God's Great promise of forgiveness
- 31:04and of
- 31:07Salvation and the law is a rule of life
- 31:11you can divide in a three-fold manner
- 31:12the moral
- 31:14law the civil law and the ceremonial
- 31:18law the certain great fixed principles
- 31:22of
- 31:22morality the special legislation for the
- 31:25life of the nation and the laws
- 31:28governing the ceremonies and the
- 31:31ritual now here's the thing I want to
- 31:35emphasize the making of This subsidiary
- 31:38Covenant with Moses on behalf of the
- 31:41children of Israel at
- 31:43sin in no way
- 31:46whatsoever interferes with the Covenant
- 31:49of Grace that had already been given to
- 31:53Abram and that had previously been
- 31:55hinted at in the Garden of Eden now let
- 31:57me prove that because there are some
- 32:00people who regard this as an entirely
- 32:02New Covenant but it isn't and I prove it
- 32:05in this way listen to Romans
- 32:10413 for the promise that he should be
- 32:14the heir of the world was not made to
- 32:18Abram or to his seed through the
- 32:22law but through the righteousness of
- 32:25Faith most important Romans
- 32:284:13 it wasn't made through the law but
- 32:31through faith listen to Galatians
- 32:343:17 Galatians
- 32:373:17 and this I say that the Covenant
- 32:41that was confirmed before of God in
- 32:45Christ the law which was 430 years after
- 32:50cannot dis anel that it should make the
- 32:53promise of none
- 32:55effect in other words Paul's great great
- 32:58argument in Romans and Galatians is this
- 33:01that the covenant made the subsidiary
- 33:03covenant made with Moses at Mount sin
- 33:06doesn't interfere in any way or to the
- 33:09slightest extent with the great Covenant
- 33:12of promise and of Grace that God had
- 33:15made with Abraham that's the fundamental
- 33:18thing this doesn't change it in any way
- 33:20at all but ask say someone what about
- 33:22Galatians
- 33:244:21 where we read this tell me ye that
- 33:27desire to be under the law do we not
- 33:29hear the law for it is written that
- 33:31Abram had two sons the one by a bond
- 33:34made the other by a free woman and where
- 33:36he goes on to say that this is an
- 33:38allegory for these are two covenants Etc
- 33:41doesn't there teach there someone that
- 33:43there is a subsidiary Covenant to which
- 33:46the answer is
- 33:47this it cannot mean that because if it
- 33:50did it would mean that Paul in chapter 4
- 33:53was contradicting his own great argument
- 33:55in chapter 3 and what he' said in the
- 33:57epistle to the Romans in chapter 4 but
- 34:00quite apart from that the context surely
- 34:03makes it quite clear his only purpose in
- 34:06Galatians 4 is to differentiate between
- 34:09the natural Israel and the spiritual
- 34:12Israel it's his way of denouncing this
- 34:16wrong understanding of the Jew who
- 34:18argued that to belong to Israel in the
- 34:20flesh meant that of necessity you belong
- 34:22to the true seed of Abram no it
- 34:25doesn't there is a kind of Earth the
- 34:28agreement there is a Heavenly agreement
- 34:30and it is the Heavenly part of the
- 34:32agreement that said after all the
- 34:34promise God made to Abram in a sense
- 34:36included ishma didn't it Esau was in a
- 34:39sense included all these people were
- 34:41circumcised yes but they're not the
- 34:43children of Faith they're not the true
- 34:45Children Of Promise they belong to the
- 34:48realm of the flesh God explains that to
- 34:51Abram you remember even in Genesis
- 34:5517 very well then I say the made through
- 34:58Moses when the law was
- 35:00given does not in any way interfere with
- 35:03the Covenant of Grace it simply was
- 35:05meant to do two things here here they
- 35:08are the first
- 35:09is it was meant to increase the
- 35:13consciousness of
- 35:16sin it wasn't meant primarily to do that
- 35:19moreover says Paul the promise entered
- 35:23that the
- 35:24offense might abound that's what he says
- 35:28in Romans 5 and 20 he's argued the same
- 35:30in Romans
- 35:324:15 listen to him in Galatians 3:17
- 35:36which reads like this and this I say
- 35:40that the Covenant that was confirmed
- 35:41before of God in Christ the law which
- 35:44was 430 years after cannot disel that it
- 35:47should make the promise of none
- 35:50effect and then he puts it like this
- 35:53wherefore or this this is subsequent now
- 35:55that's the first great argument that the
- 35:57law is
- 35:59given in order to show the exceeding
- 36:02sinfulness of
- 36:03sin in order to convict the nation and
- 36:07all others of the utter hopelessness of
- 36:10a men dealing with his own
- 36:13sinfulness so the second purpose of the
- 36:16law we can put as Galatians 3:24 puts it
- 36:19which is this wherefor the law was our
- 36:23school Master to bring us an Christ that
- 36:28we might be justified by
- 36:31faith you see the original Covenant is
- 36:34the Covenant which teaches justification
- 36:36by
- 36:37faith that is the Covenant God made with
- 36:40Abraham and he seated that's the
- 36:42fundamental thing what's the point of
- 36:44the law well the point of the law is to
- 36:47bring us to that to act as a kind of
- 36:50teacher to act as a pedagog to act as a
- 36:53coach a teacher something that shows us
- 36:57our absolute need of Christ the utter
- 36:59necessity of Christ it was never meant
- 37:02to save people the law was never given
- 37:05in order that people might be saved you
- 37:08noticed that I'm emphasizing this and
- 37:10speaking with considerable feeling about
- 37:12it and I do so for this reason that you
- 37:14will find certain Bibles and certain
- 37:16books on the Bible which um would teach
- 37:20you that God told the children of Israel
- 37:22that they could save themselves if they
- 37:24kept the law that he gave them the law
- 37:26in order to give them another way of
- 37:27saving themselves which is an utter
- 37:31contradiction of the teaching of
- 37:33scripture the law is not meant to
- 37:36interfere in any
- 37:37way with the fundamental Covenant of
- 37:41Grace the promise given to AB the law
- 37:44was added 430 years afterwards in
- 37:48reality in order to make the people
- 37:50realize their
- 37:52sinfulness the utter impossibility of
- 37:54their saving themselves and the absolute
- 37:58need of God providing a way of Salvation
- 38:02himself which he did ultimately in and
- 38:05through the Lord Jesus Christ very well
- 38:08now there we've been dealing
- 38:11with the ways in which the great
- 38:14Covenant of
- 38:16Grace was
- 38:18administered and revealed and shown to
- 38:21the
- 38:22people under the old
- 38:26dispensation that is an account of the
- 38:29old
- 38:31dispensation of the Covenant of
- 38:34Grace and that leads on of course to the
- 38:38new
- 38:40dispensation which is the way that God
- 38:43has revealed and perfected and reified
- 38:48and fulfilled the promise and all that
- 38:50is contained in the Covenant of Grace in
- 38:54and through his son our Lord and Savior
- 38:58Jesus Christ my time has
- 39:01gone I'd thought of going on also to
- 39:04tell you
- 39:05tonight something of the New Covenant of
- 39:08the new Administration the new
- 39:10dispensation of the
- 39:12Covenant and also to show you how there
- 39:14is indeed only one Covenant and to show
- 39:17you the differences between the two
- 39:19administrations but I can't do that it
- 39:21would be very wrong I think you'll all
- 39:23agree to rush it in a last few final
- 39:26moments shall we then hold that over
- 39:31until God willing we meet together next
- 39:34Friday evening when I hope to commence
- 39:38our consideration of this great matter
- 39:40by dealing with that let me try to
- 39:42summarize for you therefore what we've
- 39:45been looking at tonight look at it like
- 39:48this first of all God made with men men
- 39:52perfect men made in the image and
- 39:54likeness of God a covenant of
- 39:58Works he was to inherit that eternal
- 40:03life without possibility of end with God
- 40:06if he kept the Commandment the
- 40:10law man fa broke it sin and the fall and
- 40:15the pollution and the degradation
- 40:18follow now the thing I want to emphasize
- 40:20is that God since
- 40:23them has only made one fundamental
- 40:26Covenant with with men it is the
- 40:29Covenant of
- 40:32Grace and he has revealed that great
- 40:36Covenant of
- 40:38Grace in the ways that I've been
- 40:40describing in the Old
- 40:41Testament you see having stated the
- 40:44thing itself he makes it explicit in his
- 40:47Covenant with
- 40:49Abram and then he goes on to show it
- 40:53still more fully by the Covenant that he
- 40:56uh makes with
- 40:59Moses but the Covenant with Moses in no
- 41:02way modifies the Covenant of
- 41:05Grace it simply shows men is not our
- 41:08absolute need of the Covenant of Grace
- 41:11the law was our school Master to bring
- 41:14us to Christ it wasn't meant to do more
- 41:16than that it wasn't the way of Salvation
- 41:18in and of itself it never was that it
- 41:21isn't that it never can be
- 41:23that there is only one way of salvation
- 41:27and I hope to give you the proofs of
- 41:30that contention and of that statement
- 41:33next Friday night now I think we've all
- 41:36probably learned one thing and I trust
- 41:38have seen it more clearly than we've
- 41:40ever seen it before Christian people
- 41:42have often expressed surprise that um
- 41:45the early church decided to incorporate
- 41:47the Old Testament with its new
- 41:49literature and they say I don't see
- 41:51really as a Christian why I need to be
- 41:53bothered about the Old Testament well if
- 41:56anybody goes out of this service still
- 41:58feeling that I have failed and failed
- 42:00lamentably because I've tried to show
- 42:03you that the same great fundamental in
- 42:07the old as in the
- 42:09new that there it is in the old as in
- 42:12the
- 42:13new that there is this great unity and
- 42:17if we want to know about God's Great
- 42:18purpose we must Delight in tracing it
- 42:22from the very beginning In the Garden of
- 42:25Eden right away through until we come to
- 42:28our Lord the Old Testament the New
- 42:32Testament the old administration of the
- 42:35Covenant of Grace the new administration
- 42:37of the same Covenant of Grace The
- 42:40Marvelous plan of God unfolded the
- 42:44gospel
- 42:45begins not in Matthew
- 42:481:1 but in Genesis
- 42:513:15 let's never forget that so let us
- 42:55go to our Old Testaments and look for
- 42:56the gospel in it you will find it there
- 42:59almost everywhere in a most amazing and
- 43:02astounding Manner and it is your
- 43:04business and mind as well as our
- 43:06privilege to seek it and to rejoice in
- 43:10it as we find it in the Old Testament
