  16. 0:34sitting across from police officers
  17. 0:35hanging on to every word but was it real

  20. 0:44its
  21. 0:45wake stay with me because once we start
  22. 0:49there's no turning back Henry Lee Lucas
  23. 0:52was no ordinary man from the moment he
  24. 0:55was born something was off born in a
  25. 0:59decaying Log Cabin deep in the woods of
  26. 1:01Virginia Henry's childhood was a
  27. 1:03nightmare you couldn't wake up from his
  28. 1:06mother as cold and ruthless as winter
  29. 1:08itself forced him to watch as strange
  30. 1:11men came and went their faces Lost In
  31. 1:14Smoke and Shadow their voices low and
  32. 1:17threatening if Henry turned away she
  33. 1:20beat him and then laughed as if her
  34. 1:23cruelty gave her life even as a boy
  35. 1:26Henry drifted through life like a ghost
  36. 1:28one glassy eye
  37. 1:30a chilling reminder of a violent attack
  38. 1:32by his own brother staring blankly at a
  39. 1:35world that had shown him nothing but
  40. 1:37pain and
  41. 1:39maybe just
  42. 1:41maybe that's where the darkness first
  43. 1:43took root but the true horror wouldn't
  44. 1:46come to light until years later in the
  45. 1:49sweltering streets of Florida Lucas
  46. 1:51found a companion as dark as himself ois
  47. 1:54tulle a man with an empty smile and eyes
  48. 1:57that glinted cold to Outsiders they were
  49. 2:01just Drifters wandering from town to
  50. 2:03town appearing like an unpredictable
  51. 2:05storm but ask anyone who crossed paths
  52. 2:08with them and they'd say something about
  53. 2:10them wasn't right they met in the
  54. 2:12shadows of a rundown soup kitchen hungry
  55. 2:15for more than food some say they
  56. 2:17whispered about unspeakable things
  57. 2:20others said they laughed when no one was
  58. 2:22watching a laugh that made your skin
  59. 2:24crawl and it wasn't just the two of them
  60. 2:27soon an innocent face was pulled into
  61. 2:30their Twisted orbit Becky Powell a young
  62. 2:32girl with a childlike mind clinging to
  63. 2:35Henry as if he were her
  64. 2:36protector but who was protecting her in
  65. 2:41the summer of 1982 Becky Powell and an
  66. 2:43elderly woman named Kate Rich
  67. 2:45disappeared no screams no Trace just
  68. 2:48empty rooms and a silence heavier than a
  69. 2:51grave the towns folk whispered about
  70. 2:53what might have happened though no one
  71. 2:55dared say it aloud when Henry was
  72. 2:57finally arrested sitting there quiet
  73. 2:59quietly almost as if waiting the stories
  74. 3:03started spilling out he spoke of dark
  75. 3:05Fields where no light ever touched of
  76. 3:08nights when even the wind Stood Still
  77. 3:10and he spoke of Becky the girl who had
  78. 3:13trusted him the girl who walked with him
  79. 3:15into the night and never returned but
  80. 3:18was it true or the beginning of
  81. 3:20something even darker a Web of Lies so
  82. 3:23intricate even the police were trapped
  83. 3:25in it behind Cold Steel bars Henry
  84. 3:29talked
  85. 3:30first about Becky and Kate but soon his
  86. 3:34confessions grew Bolder his gaze darker
  87. 3:37he claimed to have killed hundreds
  88. 3:38across dozens of States desperate for
  89. 3:41answers police leaned in they took him
  90. 3:44to crime scenes fed him details and
  91. 3:47Henry gave them back stories that
  92. 3:48matched exactly what they wanted to hear
  93. 3:51and here's where the nightmare takes a
  94. 3:52terrifying twist because as Henry
  95. 3:55confessed cases were closed families
  96. 3:58were told they had answers
  97. 4:00and the world believed that the man
  98. 4:02smiling behind bars was America's worst
  99. 4:04nightmare but something wasn't right
  100. 4:07journalists the brave ones started to
  101. 4:10notice cracks in his story how could
  102. 4:12Henry be in Texas and Florida on the
  103. 4:14same day when they were hundreds of
  104. 4:16miles apart how could he know details
  105. 4:18that were never made public unless
  106. 4:21someone gave them to him and then came
  107. 4:23the most chilling question of all what
  108. 4:26if Henry hadn't done any of it what if
  109. 4:28the man everyone thought was a monster
  110. 4:30was just a liar but if he was lying who
  111. 4:34did commit those horrific acts and worse
  112. 4:37were they still out there even the
  113. 4:39legendary Texas Rangers got caught up in
  114. 4:41Henry's lies they closed hundreds of
  115. 4:44cases thinking they had their answer but
  116. 4:46behind closed doors Henry was being
  117. 4:48treated to Stak dinners milkshakes and
  118. 4:51free reain around jails they showed him
  119. 4:53files helped him refresh his memory and
  120. 4:56watched him spin stories so convincing
  121. 4:58they believed him too
  122. 5:00by the time the truth started to emerge
  123. 5:02it was too late cases were closed
  124. 5:06families were left mourning false
  125. 5:07answers and the real monsters the ones
  126. 5:10who stole people from their lives were
  127. 5:12still out there in plain sight when the
  128. 5:15dust settled only 11 murders were
  129. 5:18officially linked to Henry including his
  130. 5:20mother the infamous number 600 was a lie
  131. 5:25but by the time anyone realized it the
  132. 5:27damage had already been done for years
  133. 5:29years law enforcement paraded Henry Lee
  134. 5:32Lucas as the ultimate bogeyman the face
  135. 5:34of evil itself he was their answer to
  136. 5:37every unsolved case their convenient
  137. 5:40conclusion they called him the most
  138. 5:42prolific serial killer in American
  139. 5:44history a man who had slaughtered his
  140. 5:46way across the country leaving a trail
  141. 5:48of Devastation behind him but how did it
  142. 5:50happen how did one man an unremarkable
  143. 5:54Drifter with a long history of deception
  144. 5:56convinced the world that he was
  145. 5:58responsible for an impossible number
  146. 5:59number of deaths it started small a few
  147. 6:02confessions here and there some were
  148. 6:05real like the murder of his mother and
  149. 6:07Becky powl but then the numbers grew he
  150. 6:10talked about bodies buried in the woods
  151. 6:12about victims no one had even realized
  152. 6:14were missing and each time the police
  153. 6:16listened eager for closure they wanted
  154. 6:19to believe him they needed to believe
  155. 6:21him Henry became their Golden Goose as
  156. 6:24long as he kept talking cold cases were
  157. 6:27neatly wrapped up families desperate for
  158. 6:30answers were given resolutions no matter
  159. 6:33how shaky the foundation and Henry he
  160. 6:36was living better than he ever had in
  161. 6:38his entire life steak dinners strawberry
  162. 6:41milkshakes cigarettes and endless
  163. 6:44attention things a man like him had
  164. 6:46never been offered before the more he
  165. 6:49gave them the more they rewarded him and
  166. 6:53Henry ever the chameleon knew exactly
  167. 6:55what they wanted to hear he memorized
  168. 6:58Case Files they let him Peak at he
  169. 7:00studied the reactions of detectives as
  170. 7:02he spoke fine-tuning his stories in real
  171. 7:05time he repeated back details that were
  172. 7:07secret but only because they had been
  173. 7:09whispered to him in the interrogation
  174. 7:11room the truth was Henry had become a
  175. 7:14performer and the world was his stage
  176. 7:17but not everyone bought into his act
  177. 7:19some reporters and investigators began
  178. 7:21picking apart his confessions finding
  179. 7:24inconsistencies so glaring they were
  180. 7:26impossible to ignore how could he
  181. 7:28describe a crime scene in in Vivid
  182. 7:29detail when it had already been torn
  183. 7:32down before he was ever brought in how
  184. 7:34could he have traveled across the
  185. 7:35country committing murders on opposite
  186. 7:38coasts in time frames that didn't make
  187. 7:40sense slowly the cracks widened and soon
  188. 7:44the entire story collapsed and yet even
  189. 7:48as the truth came out some whispered
  190. 7:50that maybe just maybe Henry had told the
  191. 7:53truth about a few of them maybe among
  192. 7:55the lies there were pieces of Darkness
  193. 7:58only he knew and would take to his grave
  194. 8:02Henry Lee Lucas died in 2001 but if you
  195. 8:05visit his grave they say the wind still
  196. 8:07howls through the trees and if you
  197. 8:09listen closely you might hear The
