0:41investigation like this I mean I'm sure
0:43you can appreciate it's some big news uh
0:45especially down Belleville way it
0:48started with the police interrogators
0:50version of small talk we're fast
0:53forwarding things that we might normally
0:55take our time with um and that's why
0:57we're here on a Sunday afternoon so uh
1:00again I appreciate it and I'm quite sure
1:02at that point it's in everybody's mind
1:05he's not walking out that door a free
1:07man that night for a while there was
1:10denial okay have you ever visited uh uh
1:14Marie France comoo at her residence no
1:17okay all right um so you're quite
1:19positive there would be no reason why
1:20your DNA would be any of those three
1:22locations now what he's doing is trying
1:25to figure out an explanation to give
1:26this guy because he knows man I am
1:29screwed I am so screwed it would come
1:32down to the two men in the room the
1:34commanding officer and the detective
1:37your vehicle drove up the side of
1:39Jessica Lloyd's
1:41house your boots walked to the back of
1:45Jessica Lloyd's house on the evening of
1:47the 28th and 29th of
1:49January you want
1:52discretion we need to have some honesty
1:55okay because this is this is getting
1:57under control really fast Russell

2:04be a commander he was taught to be a
2:05leader he was taught to segment take the
2:09emotion away put it there but Colonel
2:12Russell Williams was about to learn that
2:14he was no longer the one in charge

2:29looking at him he knows he's just
2:31dropped the first bomb this is the
2:34beginning of the end on this special

3:39the leading man sometimes wanders off
3:41screen but what takes place in the
3:44interrogation and confession is more
3:46gripping and real than anything ever
3:47seen on CSI or Law and Order when he
3:51walks into that room Colonel Russell
3:53Williams is commanding officer of CFB
3:55Trenton Canada's largest most important
3:57Air Base a top pilot who Prides himself
4:00on disciplin and self-control 10 hours
4:03later he's a confessed murderer and
4:05sexual predator how he goes from one to
4:08the other is a fascinating view of
4:10police tactics the power of persuasion
4:13and sheer evil we haven't seen anything
4:15like it and we think you likely haven't
4:20either the interrogation would take
4:22place here at police headquarters in
4:24Ottawa it was Sunday February 7th
4:282010 Russ Williams was spending the
4:31weekend at the new home in ottawa's West
4:33End that he and his wife had recently
4:34moved into in the early afternoon he got
4:38a phone call asking him to the police
4:40building to answer a few questions he
4:43reportedly said he'd be back for
4:45dinner we don't know what went through
4:47his mind as he drove
4:49downtown but there certainly was a lot
4:52for him to think
4:56about it had been 10 days earlier
4:59January AR Ary 28th that a 27-year-old
5:02woman named Jessica Lloyd returned from
5:03an evening out to her house on Highway
5:0537 a 20-minute drive from Russell
5:08Williams Cottage in Tweed
5:10Ontario she sent a final text message to
5:13a friend before calling it a night
5:15according to her brother Andy it was
5:17said night night I believe it was it was
5:19just kind of saying that was it and
5:21assumed she was on her way to bed
5:23because it was 10:30 and she had to work
5:24at you know 8:00 in the morning and yeah
5:28so that was the last anybody heard from
5:29was that text
5:34message a few hours later about 3:00
5:37a.m. two local men drove along that same
5:39stretch of highway
5:4137 they noticed an SUV parked in a field
5:45next to an isolated house they kept
5:48driving it would be a while before they
5:50understood exactly what they'd
5:55[Music]
5:57seen later that day Andy Lloyd got a
6:00phone call from his mother his sister
6:02Jessica had never arrived at work Andy
6:05went right to her house that's what was
6:07so weird is because everything was there
6:10you know which why we couldn't figure
6:13out what had happened because all of her
6:15identification and I mean her cell phone
6:17and her purse and things people don't
6:20leave home without were
6:22there the whole town was looking for
6:25Jessica family friends members of the
6:28public police forces even search and
6:31rescue from CFB Trenton word spread
6:34across
6:35Ontario and that's when the man who'd
6:37seen the SUV noticed emergency vehicles
6:40around a house on Highway
6:4237 it was Jessica Lloyd's house the same
6:46one that was next to the field where the
6:48SUV had been parked that's when the men
6:51went to the police officers found tire
6:54tracks in the field and bootprints near
6:57the house
7:00the Ontario Provincial Police set up
7:01roadblocks checking the tires of cars on
7:04Highway 37 looking for a match on
7:07Thursday February 4th one of those they
7:09stopped was Colonel Russell Williams
7:11driving his
7:12SUV they checked his tires then let him
7:15go unbeknownst to Williams he was under
7:18police surveillance from then
7:21on at the same time as the opp was
7:24investigating The Disappearance of
7:26Jessica Lloyd they had three other
7:28unsolved cases is in the same vicinity a
7:30murder and two sexual assaults all had
7:33possible links to Colonel Williams the
7:36assaults took place in his Tweed
7:37neighborhood the murder victim was Marie
7:39France KOMO a Corporal at CFB Trenton in
7:42fact a military flight attendant who'd
7:44once flown with him but it's likely that
7:46investigators never put it all together
7:49until they stopped Williams at that
7:50roadblock and matched his SUV's tires to
7:54the track found in the
7:56fields it is just before 300 p.m. on
7:59Sunday February 7th when Russell
8:01Williams arrives at Ottawa Police
8:03Headquarters inside he's ushered into an
8:06interrogation room the op has borrowed
8:08for the day it's sparsely furnished two
8:11chairs a desk nothing mounted on the
8:14walls but two digital
8:16cameras one pointed at the investigator
8:19detective Sergeant Jim
8:20Smith the other at Colonel
8:23Williams I assume veteran us homicide
8:27interrogator Paul celino know knows how
8:29it all
8:31works everything is controlled from the
8:33minute you bring him in that room okay
8:35the way where you're sitting where he's
8:36sitting you never want to put a desk
8:38between you and anybody okay never you
8:41never interview from across a desk you
8:43always want to get close you start out
8:45kind of far but as the interrogation
8:47goes on you move in closer because you
8:49want that physical you want that
8:50intimate touch with somebody I'm just
8:52going to move your gloves here that's a
8:53little microphone just to make sure
8:54there's nice and clear um as you can see
8:56here everything in this room is a video
8:57taped and audio taped Che
9:00uh youever been interviewed by the
9:02police in a in a room like this before
9:03or I have never been interviewed like oh
9:05no okay no let get this
9:11out gu the closest
9:14to interview by NIS for top secret
9:17clearance oh yeah all right well Russ
9:20app but even mention of his top secret
9:22clearance will have no effect today
9:25before it's over this interview will be
9:27the most important conversation Russ
9:29Williams will ever

9:59enters the police interview room in
10:02Ottawa you been interviewed by the
10:04police in a in a room like this before I
10:06have never been interviewed like this oh
10:07no okay whatever he's told himself about
10:10why he's here today he appears relaxed
10:13about the invitation to answer questions
10:15he clearly knows it's about The
10:17Disappearance of Jessica Lloyd you know
10:19obviously our approach to cases like
10:21this is that uh uh we don't give up on
10:24somebody being alive until we get
10:26evidence that they're not so um because
10:28of that we're treating Jessica's case as
10:31an emergent situation obviously the
10:33interviewer is detective Sergeant Jim
10:35Smith of the Ontario Provincial Police
10:38he's been preparing for this moment for
10:40days I have a simple rule when I talk to
10:42people it's uh I'm sure you're the same
10:44way I treat people everybody with
10:45respect and all I ask to do the same for
10:47me um so what we're going to do is we're
10:49going to start off by uh going through
10:51um what your rights are okay just like
10:53everybody else okay Mark Mendelson is a
10:56former Toronto homicide detective and
10:58the man who interrogated Carla
11:00hamula the investigator comes from the
11:03behavioral sciences unit of the op he's
11:05a trained polygraph technician so he's
11:08obviously an excellent interviewer to
11:09begin with but they sat down with their
11:11body of evidence and with the
11:13psychiatrist from the behavioral
11:14sciences unit sort of developing a
11:17profile of what Williams is and what
11:20he's most likely to do when certain
11:22questions are put to him so that if he
11:24answers a they follow this path if he
11:26answers B he'll follow this path so
11:28there's no surprise they it was all laid
11:31out long before he walked in that room
11:34Smith Reminds Williams he's not under
11:36arrest and is free to go at any time if
11:39there's anything that comes up in our
11:41interview today Russell that uh that you
11:43feel you want to talk uh to a lawyer
11:45about um you just uh you just let me
11:47know okay now he could have called him
11:50Colonel Williams he could have called
11:51him sir but he did you you'll notice
11:54during the course of the interview he
11:55never calls him Colonel because what
11:57that does and I would have done and I
12:00think any other homicide would have done
12:01the same thing is it it it puts him on a
12:03on a different level on a different
12:04Plateau he's got to be Russell from
12:07Tweed he's got to be the guy that lives
12:09in Tweed and you don't give him that
12:10respect and don't give him that power of
12:13being called
12:15Colonel Williams jokes that the only
12:17kind of lawyer he needs is for Real
12:19Estate transactions do you have your own
12:22lawyer I have a realy lawyer but I don't
12:25have a
12:26lawyer once Smith has Williams in the
12:28right mind
12:29the conversation returns to Jessica
12:32Lloyd I want to explain to you exactly
12:34what's going on here okay Jessica uh
12:37Lloyd is um is one of four cases that
12:41we're currently investigating okay but
12:44Williams must know the questions will
12:45also touch on other recent crimes around
12:48his Lakefront Cottage on cozy coov Lane
12:50in Tweed
12:51Ontario because he knows what the police
12:54don't that beginning in 2007 when he was
12:58at the cottage USU alone a multitude of
13:01crimes would follow dozens of bizarre
13:03break-ins women's lingerie and underwear
13:06stolen almost all in his neighborhood
13:08and on his street including two sexual
13:11assaults these first two attacks
13:14happened uh not that far from my place
13:16in two well the second one did yeah we
13:18didn't even know the first one had
13:20happened but uh I understand that was
13:22reasonably close as well but the second
13:23one was uh was very
13:25close notice he used the pronoun we
13:28referring to his marriage and he reminds
13:31Smith he's cooperated with police so
13:33certainly at the time youp did a
13:36uh my door to door yeah and uh within a
13:39couple of days probably the same night
13:41so I spoke with a couple guys then okay
13:43um yeah and I'm I'm aware of that you
13:45know you've kind of uh almost hit the
13:46nail on the head about some of our
13:48issues that kind of uh make us want to
13:50talk to to Russell Williams okay um
13:53because essentially uh there was a a a
13:56connection um between you and in all
13:59four of those cases would you agree
14:03Geographic I guess I drive past yes I
14:06would have to say there's a a connection
14:08here it seems unlikely that Russell
14:11Williams knew much if anything but the
14:13softspoken man sitting opposite him
14:16detective Sergeant Jim Smith is a
14:18veteran in the OPP's Behavioral Sciences
14:20unit which applies such techniques as
14:22criminal profiling and forensic
14:24psychiatry to Crime investigation it was
14:27Smith acting on a hunch who found the
14:30body of the missing 8-year-old Tor
14:31Stafford in Woodstock Ontario a year ago
14:35there are few better at interrogation as
14:37Colonel Williams was about to find
14:40out having set the scene with broad
14:43Strokes Smith now gets to specifics like
14:46where Williams was the day Jessica Lloyd
14:48never made it to work Friday on the day
14:51I was at home most of the time most of
14:52the day I had a sort of a stomach flu
14:55okay in Ottawa or a tweet tweet in tweet
14:58okay yeah
15:00discussion turns to Corporal Marie frano
15:02found murdered in her home 3 months
15:05before can't remember what what day of
15:07the week we're talking about it but uh
15:09obviously one of your people gets killed
15:11it gets your attention so absolutely I
15:13very much that coming in and how did you
15:16know Marie France K I'd only met her
15:19once um she was on a crew I was on just
15:24after I got to the
15:26base in fact the 38-year-old Kom was an
15:29adventuresome military flight attendant
15:31at Trenton she had recently been a
15:33member of the crew flying Prime Minister
15:34Steven Harper on a state visit to the
15:37Far East her friend Al plant spoke with
15:40her when she got back she flew from
15:42Trenton over the Pacific to go to Japan
15:46and from there when they came back uh
15:49they flew over the Atlantic so she went
15:51around the
15:52world I don't know many people who did
15:55that so I
15:56was I was curious and happy before but
16:00because her dream was coming
16:02true 3 Days Later Mar France Ko's body
16:06was discovered inside her house in
16:07Brighton Ontario the cause of death was
16:11asphixiation Colonel Williams tells
16:14detective Smith he learned about it from
16:16the military police now you got that
16:18email notifying that something had
16:21happened it's unclear what thoughts go
16:23through William's mind but he seems to
16:25be grasping for something to say uh do
16:29you have uh any kind of a a clear
16:31recollection as to how your schedule was
16:32going that
16:36week well I can't remember what again
16:39what day that uh the message came in
16:41just a
16:43second
16:50um no I can't remember what day day of
16:52the week but I
16:54um I just think there was a whole bunch
16:56of activity spun up as a result
16:58obviously
17:02I can't remember the day of the week
17:05detective Sergeant Smith takes the
17:06bungled answer as an opportunity to set
17:09out in another Direction challenging
17:11Williams to prove he's innocent so if we
17:14were to uh do similar investigation in
17:16your background is there is there
17:18anything you can think of that anybody
17:19may have misinterpreted or anything uh
17:22in your history that somebody might say
17:24Russell Williams uh absolutely did this
17:27no okay be very boring what's that it'll
17:31be very
17:32boring all right because essentially
17:34that's what I'm looking at is it uh
17:38um you seem like a very intelligent
17:40person I think you can see how um a
17:43surprise like that would uh certainly
17:46some alarm BS on our investigation right
17:48okay Smith now gets to the point he
17:50needs more than words from Williams what
17:53would you be willing to give me today to
17:55help me um move past you in this
17:58investigation
18:01what uh what do you need well um would
18:04you be willing to supply things like
18:06fingerprints blood samples things like
18:08that okay Watch What Happens Next At The
18:12Mention Of Footwear Footwear Impressions
18:14Williams looks at his feet he's wearing
18:16boots I think that's what we're going to
18:18we're going to ask you to do all right
18:21detective Smith leaves the room to find
18:22the necessary
18:24Personnel it's here that Russell
18:26Williams faces a crucial juncture he can
18:29give Smith what he wants and risk the
18:31consequences or he can change his mind
18:33and ask for a lawyer blame it on hubris
18:36or being a good soldier but Williams
18:38doesn't Flinch he provides his
18:40fingerprints blood and DNA and he lets
18:43them take prints of the boots he's
18:45wearing afterwards the colonel is
18:47apprehensive about who might learn about
18:51it can I assume you're going to be
18:54discreet that's possible yeah because uh
18:59you know this would have a very
19:01significant impact on the base if they
19:03thought you thought I did this well uh
19:06bottom line Russell that's one of the
19:08reasons we're here on a Sunday afternoon
19:10see how his arms are folded up now this
19:12tells the
19:13interrogator he's in trouble and he's
19:16he's nervous because when you fold your
19:17arms up you're closing yourself up
19:19psychologically okay and look at he's
19:21looking down the whole time he's not
19:23making great eye contact and and the
19:25interrogator hit some with a great line
19:27in there he goes well that's why we're
19:29here on a Sunday cuz we want it to be
19:30discreet that's ridiculous okay cuz they
19:34don't care about being discreet at this
19:35point they they care about getting them
19:36but that's a great comeback if you're an
19:38interrogator right now you're thinking
19:40this is a guilty guy this guy is guilty
19:43and I'm going to get them uh that's
19:46certainly one of the things that would
19:46ender our decision to to give you a call
19:48at home day and see if we could deal
19:49with this today okay so okay
19:57um it's tough to undo the rumor mill
20:00once it gets
20:01started it appears that even after
20:03giving police all that evidence he still
20:06thinks he might somehow be able to walk
20:08away reputation
20:10intact but the commanding officer is not
20:13the one in charge here and his body
20:15language appears to show that he knows
20:17it that DNA is going to be uh
20:20significant in our investigation both uh
20:22you know quite possibly to help you
20:24quite possibly to help us I don't know
20:26yet don't know what the result is yet um
20:28notice the quick smile at mention of DNA
20:31left behind at his crime scene when
20:34Smith asks about anything he may not
20:36want his wife to know he shifts in his
20:38seat and frequently sze is there any
20:42contact that you may have had with any
20:43of those four women um that you may not
20:47want your wife to be aware of anything
20:49like that that we should know about to
20:51try and uh explain why if if your DNA is
20:55found it would help us understand why it
20:57may be there absolutely
20:59yes methodically Smith goes over it all
21:02one more time cementing Williams
21:05categorical denial have you ever visited
21:08uh Marie France comoo at her residence
21:11no okay all right um so you're quite
21:14positive there would be no reason why
21:15your DNA would be any of those three
21:17locations okay um did you know Jessica
21:20Lloyd even in passing for any reason no
21:24I didn't hear hear her name till it was
21:26on the news
21:28what brought Colonel Russell Williams to
21:30the attention of the police in the first
21:31place was the SUV spotted from Highway
21:3437 the night Jessica Lloyd
21:37disappeared and the tire tracks police
21:39discovered in the
21:41field when they stopped Williams in his
21:44SUV the tires were a
21:47match now detective Smith reveals to
21:49Williams that he knows it how tires do
21:52you have on your
21:56Pathfinder I think um I think they're
22:00Toyo you the brand name or sorry
22:03the um I don't sorry the make is Toyo
22:08yeah I don't know the model
22:13OKAY read this up to you see if it rings

22:19bell the colonel sees it coming ever
22:23heard of uh does Toyo Open Country HTS
22:28yeah that sounds
22:29sense Smith gets Williams to deny he had
22:32ever parked the SUV with the Toyo Tires
22:35in the field a jent to Jessica Lloyd's
22:38house do you have any recollection at
22:41all of being off that road no it's not
22:43off the road no okay all right bad move
22:47okay what he should have said was
22:50impossible couldn't happened but see you
22:53could see what's happening here he's
22:55he's got his arms folded and he's nauy
22:57his body language is saying yes I was
23:00there what's coming out of his mouth
23:02isn't that convincing as well because
23:05he's so he is so tore up inside right
23:08now because he's thinking where did I
23:10drive what did I do that night where was
23:13I was I North he's trying to think five
23:15steps ahead of this guy it's just not
23:17going to happen but his whole body is
23:19indicating man am I in trouble I have a
23:21serious problem now in his firm but
23:25quiet way Jim Smith is about to make the
23:27transition from good cop to bad I told
23:30you when I came in here uh that I'm
23:32going to treat you with respect and I've
23:34asked you to do the same for me
23:37um we talked about the whole idea of how
23:39we've uh approached you here okay uh the
23:43trying to be as just read as possible
23:46okay but the problem is Russell is every
23:48time I walk out of this room there's
23:50another issue that comes up okay and
23:53it's not issues that point away from you
23:55it's issues that point at you okay and I
23:57want I want you to see what I'm all
24:02right this is the Footwear
24:07impression of the person who
24:10approached the rear of Jessica Lloyd's
24:13house on the evening of the 28th and
24:1529th of January okay detective Smith now
24:19knows as the colonel does too that the
24:22prince belong to boots owned by Russell
24:27Williams this this is a photoc copy of
24:30the boot that uh you took off your foot
24:33yeah just a little while ago okay now
24:36they're the boots Williams wore on
24:38January 28th the very same boots he put
24:41on to come to Ottawa Police Headquarters
24:44today these are
24:50identical okay your vehicle drove up the
24:54side of Jessica Lloyd's
24:56house your boots
24:58walked to the back of Jessica Lloyd's
25:01house on the evening of the 28th and
25:0329th of
25:04January okay you want
25:07discretion we need to have some honesty
25:11okay because this is this is getting
25:13under control really fast
25:15Russell okay really really
25:25fast Paul Cino is a former US homicide
25:28investigator and interrogation expert
25:31this is what we call a confrontation and
25:33what's the colonel doing dur this he's
25:35nodding he's going up that head's noding
25:37up and down that's an involuntary
25:39reaction we call but that's indicator of
25:42what's going on internally and what he's
25:44nodding to is holy [ __ ] it's my boot
25:48they got my bootprint he's think God how
25:50how dumb am I to wear the same boots to
25:53the police station
25:55today this is getting Beyond My Control
26:00right I came in here a few hours
26:03ago and I called you the way I called
26:05you today because I wanted to give you
26:06the benefit doubt but you and I both
26:09know you were at Jessica Lloyd's house
26:13and I need to know
26:15why William seems Frozen unwilling or
26:19unable to
26:25speak he grabs the paperwork and he's
26:27got it right now what he's doing is
26:30trying to figure out an explanation to
26:31give this guy because he knows man I am
26:34screwed I am so screwed he's buying time
26:37and we and we call this buying time now
26:39what the detective does though is is
26:41great because a lot of detectives
26:43they'll keep talking but silence is
26:46great okay because now it becomes very
26:50uncomfortable Smith tells Williams his
26:52window for explanation is about to slam
26:55shut
26:59you know there's only one option what do
27:00you what do you what other option is
27:02there what's the
27:04option well I don't think you want the
27:07coldblooded psychopath
27:12option I might be
27:16wrong because don't get me wrong I've
27:18met guys who actually kind of enjoyed
27:21the notoriety got off on
27:24it got off on having that
27:26label Bernardo in one of them I don't
27:30see that in you if I saw that in you I
27:32wouldn't be back in here talking to you
27:33quite
27:40frankly but maybe I'm wrong maybe you
27:43got me fooled I don't
27:49know this is
27:53over and it can have
27:56a a bad end end in where Jessica's
28:01parents
28:02continue to wonder where her daughter's
28:10lying I don't know I mean obviously
28:14there's a huge search still underway and
28:16it'll
28:17continue it'll continue until her body's
28:23found that might even happen tonight for
28:26all I know
28:30once that
28:32happens then I don't know what other
28:34card you would have to
28:43play what are we going to
28:46do Smith not only wants Williams to
28:48confess but perhaps even more pressing
28:51to direct them to the body of Jessica
28:53Lloyd the silence continues for half a
28:56minute
28:59then a glimmer of

32:05armor is Jessica somewhere we can find

32:12can make a call and tell somebody to go
32:13to a location and they're going to find
32:14her or is this something where we have
32:16to go and and
32:19uh take a walk
32:39the awful reality his victims had known
32:41is now sinking in for Russell Williams

36:37there clearly so they're watching it and
36:41you want to know what they're doing yes

36:45go get I mean that's what's going on
36:46outside that room but right now there's
36:48a big celebration going on because they
36:50know they own this guy right now as we
36:53said before Canadians have never seen
36:55anything like it a police investigator
36:57at the peak of his powers interrogating
37:00someone so accomplished in their career
37:02let alone a top ranking military man
37:04especially someone responsible for a
37:06criminal trail of such willful cruelty
37:10so far it's been almost 5 hours of quiet
37:13intense intellectual
37:16combat forensic psychiatrist Duncan
37:18Scott of Queens University has met with
37:21Russell Williams weekly since his
37:24arrest watching him on on tape in the
37:29confession once he's said get the map
37:32I'll show you where Jessica Lloyd is is
37:35uh
37:36dumped he becomes very calm it seems and
37:39he's got an almost matter OFA way of
37:42describing these terrible things just as
37:46if he would have to get up in front of
37:48tell a whole bunch of people about the
37:49people that have just died under his uh
37:52under his command and how he would have
37:56to write a letter and how he would go
37:57and talk to the individuals and keep his
38:00emotions at Bay that was something that
38:03he had learned to do quite well for
38:05detective Smith the priority now is find
38:08Jessica Lloyd which town is she near why
38:11don't we start
38:17there I'm not sure if you give me a map
38:20of uh that covers calar down to the
38:25highway
38:27and over did
38:29Tweed and S I'll show you let me see
38:32what I got here I might have
38:35something is she inside
38:40outside with the search for Jessica on
38:43going Smith is equipped with maps of the
38:45area around
38:47Tweed where am I going on the on here to
38:49get to
38:52her and this BL here okay so you're
38:56pointing to detailed map of that area
38:58I'll show you where she is okay is she
39:01close to a road yep all right um is it
39:06something where is she is she buried or
39:09is she somewhere where if you walk there
39:10you would you would fairly easily see
39:12her it's here how long's she been there
39:20for a little
39:22week was it fairly quick from the
39:25time she left
39:28Friday
39:29night Friday night yeah so where was she
39:32between Thursday night and Friday night
39:35in tweet with you
39:38y how long was she alive
39:45for almost 24 hours not
39:48quite
39:50okay
39:52Russ you're doing the right thing here
39:57okay well again my interest is in U
40:02making my my wife's life a little
40:04easier he knows to this guy other than
40:08his military career his wife is
40:10everything what he's thinking I got 600
40:12pairs of people's underwear in my house
40:14and my wife is going to be out of her
40:16mind how do I want the TVs out in front
40:19of her house for the next two years do I
40:22want them destroying and ripping up the
40:24house what can I do to make this better
40:27it's an horrific bargain belated
40:30consideration for his wife in exchange
40:32for information about where he dumped
40:34the body of a young woman he brutalized
40:37and
40:38killed almost matter of factly he then
40:41reveals where police can find the
40:43digital memory cards on which he keeps
40:45the photographs he takes of his victims
40:47while he tortures sexually assaults and
40:50kills

40:53them and whose images are on those cards
40:57uh well I've erased them but I expect uh
41:03you'll be able to draw images of uh just
41:05can
41:07I what about
41:16Marie there may be images on there as
41:19well and the two women from
41:22September y okay detective Smith comes
41:26back to the question of where to find
41:29Jessica Williams says she's exactly 7 km
41:33from a certain
41:34intersection how far off the road is she
41:3740t she if she covered with
41:42anything wrapped up she's on the
41:46surface a
41:49Something cover
41:52okay bar the obvious question I'm going
41:54to have for you is
41:58when they go there and they'll be there
42:00shortly they're going to find her oh
42:03yeah early the next morning February 8th
42:07police recovered Jessica Lloyd 7 km from
42:10the intersection exactly where Russell
42:12Williams said she would
42:14be for detective Jim Smith the hard part
42:17is over but now the really hard part
42:20Begins the terrible Litany of all that
42:23Williams has done I put tape on her
42:25mouth
42:28and then I put tape on her nose
42:32and held it there so she couldn't
42:39breathe free edition of The Fifth Estate
42:41it contains graphic descriptions and
42:43scenes that may be disturbing to some

42:55advised it is Sunday evening February
42:597th in the interview room at Ottawa
43:01Police Headquarters the tension has
43:03broken Russell Williams now ready to
43:07confess what you're about to hear is
43:09sexual violent and could very well be
43:15disturbing it's uh pretty wide open now
43:18right yeah what do you want to know well
43:21do you want to work forwards or
43:25backwards doesn't matter why don't we
43:27start with
43:30Jessica how does that start for
43:34you it happened 10 days earlier whenever
43:38Colonel Williams went from CFB Trenton
43:40to his Cottage in Tweed he drove right
43:42by the house where Jessica Lloyd lived
43:45it recently caught sight of her working
43:47out as he passed
43:52by
43:53um I saw her in her house on her Tri
43:59not w at
44:04us and I noticed she wasn't
44:07um there
44:11Thursday so I got into the house look
44:19around then
44:21um and they
44:24left notice she'd come home
44:29so I went back
44:33in through the uh back patio
44:36door while she was
44:54sleeping so I woke her up
45:09didn't um didn't hit her she only hit
45:12her
45:13once Friday
45:17night while he assaulted Lloyd his SUV
45:20sat in the field next to her house his
45:22biggest
45:23mistake afterwards he drove her to his
45:26Cottage in Tweed to continue the
45:31attack well so I raped her in uh in her
45:37house and then I took her to the car and
45:40took her to
45:53tweet and um
45:59spent the day in
46:06tweet and then I hit her U as we were
46:10walking she thought we were
46:17leaving on the back of the
46:20head William says the flashlight with
46:23which he hit her did more damage than he
46:25expected
46:29well I was surprised that uh her her
46:32skull gave
46:34way she was there immediately
46:39unconscious and I strangle
46:42her William says while Jessica Lloyd was
46:44unconscious he strangled her with a rope
46:47and left her body in his garage while he
46:49drove to Trenton then to Ottawa for a
46:51weekend with his wife he returned to the
46:53cottage on Tuesday and took Lloyd to the
46:55spot where she would be f the following
46:57week again his tone in describing a
47:00beautiful young woman in her final
47:02moments is stunningly matter of
47:05[Music]
47:07fact it's a similar story when he
47:09recounts the last night of Marie France
47:11Ko's life at her home in Brighton
47:15Ontario she was under his command at CFB
47:18Trenton and apparently it caught
47:20William's
47:21eye her house was 50 kilometers in the
47:24wrong direction from his Cottage at
47:26Tweed
47:27but it' visited before when she was gone
47:30then came back entering through a
47:32basement
47:37window
47:41R so when she spotted me I
47:46um had the same
47:48flashlight I subdued
47:54her TI up
48:05upstairs and uh strangled
48:10her later in the
48:14morning upstairs Williams also raped and
48:17photographed her though he was kom's
48:20commanding officer his head and face
48:22were covered and she didn't recognize
48:24him he decided to kill her
48:28anyway did you take anything out of uh
48:31Marie Francis house or Jessica Lloyd's
48:34house uh yeah some of their
48:38underwear okay that's
48:41all detective Jim Smith seemed surprised
48:44to learn how much of their underwear
48:46Williams
48:49took
48:52um probably 60 pieces or something total
48:55all women's
48:57yeah 60 pieces of
49:01theirs of who's of Jessica's and
49:06uh Mary
49:09FR so you took 60 pieces from between
49:13the two of them yeah okay
49:16ex next the detective moves on to the
49:19two sexual assaults in Williams
49:21neighborhood in
49:23Tweed one victim lived just a few doors
49:26away from from his Cottage as she's
49:28described it she was asleep at home when
49:30she was surprised by an intruder he
49:32blindfolded her tied her up cut off her
49:35clothes choked beat sexually assaulted
49:39and photographed her for 2 and 1/2
49:41hours Williams recounts it somewhat
49:45differently I did have the
49:47flashlight that time I H over the
49:50flashlight and thinking it would knock
49:52her
49:53out
49:55didn't so
49:58seded her with my
50:01weight took off her clo took some
50:03pictures and
50:06left he told much the same story about
50:09the other sexual
50:10assault like almost everyone else
50:13detective Smith searches for Williams
50:17motivation why do you think these things
50:19happen
50:35haveen you spent much time thinking
50:36about that about why
50:40yeah
50:45yeah but I don't have any
50:52answers and I'm pretty sure the answers
50:54don't matter
50:57well let me let me ask you this did you
50:58like or dislike these
51:02women I didn't know any of
51:05them that may be as close to truth as we
51:08can get that he had no feelings at all
51:11for the women he raped and murdered even
51:14Jessica Lloyd whom he held captive for
51:16the last day of her
51:19life can you tell me why you killed her
51:23R do you know why you killed her well
51:26think I killed her because I knew that
51:37uh her story would be
51:45recognized her story will be recognized
51:47how do you
51:49mean well because she knew I was taking
51:53pictures he says he worried Lloyd's case
51:56would be died to the two assaults in
51:57tweet well Williams also took
52:00photographs as for Corporal Marie frano
52:04IR rationalized he had to kill her
52:06because she was stationed at CFB
52:10Trenton well because
52:19um I was pretty sure that
52:22uh you know she was serving military
52:26right
52:27mhm it would have been
52:30uh it would have been difficult
52:32for investigators to
52:35ignore that
52:37connection for Marie frano perhaps the
52:40ultimate absen is that after everything
52:42else when she took her last breath
52:44Williams recorded it on
52:47video as for Jessica Lloyd Williams
52:49bought her co-operation by promising if
52:51she did what he said she would get her
52:54Freedom oh no she just didn't have too
52:56much of a f did she try and negotiate
52:59with you at all
53:02or what did she say well I told her that
53:06I would uh let her go later
53:12on but after humiliating and raping her
53:15and recording it on video Williams
53:18murdered her
53:20too and how did you know she was
53:25dead she
53:30um her body stop
53:37moving you're watching a special
53:39commercial free edition of The Fifth

53:54advised it is after after midnight now
53:57Monday February 8th when the door of
54:00interrogation room 216 closes behind
54:02Russell Williams for the last
54:05time in a few hours police would locate
54:08the body of Jessica Lloyd after that
54:10they would make their shocking
54:12announcement arrested Russell Williams
54:1546 of Tweed for first-degree murder he's
54:18a lousy lousy lousy at at at murdering
54:22people and and setting itself up I think
54:25it's this is a horrible
54:27forensic psychiatrist Duncan Scott of
54:29Queens University consults with the
54:31Detention Facility where Williams was
54:33held he's met with him since his arrest
54:36and he's not surprised the addiction to
54:38sex and murder LED so far so
54:41fast it's spinning out of control and
54:45that's what I'm trying to say about
54:47being messy and what he was doing
54:51um he he wasn't really uh planning it
54:55was just going on it was if it happened
54:57in front of them it was kind of meant to
55:00be and the urges were so overwhelming
55:04and the rush knowing what he's going to
55:06be getting from that was again so
55:09overwhelming for him that thirst
55:12unquenchable for him Dr Scott says as a
55:15murderer Williams is
55:18unique Academia is out the window at
55:20this time there's no sample group of
55:23these types of individuals there's no
55:25FBI
55:26huge base rate that we can sample and
55:29find out whether where this goes back to
55:32or whether there's something in vitro
55:34here or in utro and and something
55:37happened during his upbringing or some
55:39horrible trauma that occurred to him
55:41that we aren't going to be finding that
55:43but he says he does know one thing that
55:45if Williams hadn't been stopped he
55:47wouldn't have stopped
55:48himself after watching the confession
55:51Russell Williams longtime and loyal
55:53friend Jeff farar is now also convinced
55:56of
55:57that it's just shocking is not a word
56:00that even comes close um he
56:04is I've had a tough time understanding
56:06how he might be portrayed as a serial
56:08killer and sexual predator but now I
56:12realize that he's the worst of the bunch
56:15and to try and understand that to try
56:18and put that in context with Russ who
56:20I've known for close to 30 years just as
56:23I said before it doesn't add up and not
56:25only does it not add up
56:27but he's a bigger monster than anybody
56:30I've heard or read about and it's uh
56:33like I say shocking doesn't even begin
56:35to cover it um it's
56:38disgusting I I don't know what to say
56:40you know honestly I'm really at a loss
56:42for words and that's what scares me so
56:45much is that uh my God he really is
56:48maybe a
56:50psychopath Chief op investigator Chris
56:53Nicholas it was an excellent piece of
56:56police work on behalf of Jim Smith who
56:58conducted this interview one of the best
57:00interviews I've ever seen uh and it's uh
57:04it's a smart man being outsmarted by a
57:07smarter
57:08man it may be even better than that
57:11according to us interrogation expert
57:13Paul
57:16celino because let me tell you what's
57:17going to happen this tape will be played
57:19in every interrogation course in the
57:22world English speaking one and probably
57:24other ones as how to do it this guy is
57:27doing it this is classic before it ends
57:30one of detective Jim Smith's final
57:32questions to Russell Williams reveals
57:35exactly what was at stake if this didn't
57:38come to the point it's at right
57:40now if for whatever reason you didn't
57:42end up on our on our radar so to speak
57:45uh do you think it would have happened
57:54again I was not that I can't answer the
58:01question after his sentencing hearing
58:03and a statement of remorse Russell
58:05Williams was driven to the penitentiary
58:07in Kingston Ontario given two concurrent
58:09life sentences with no possibility of
58:11parole for 25 years it's believed he
58:14will remain behind bars for the rest of
58:17his natural life and that's our program
