1:32hello hi today's the first day of
1:35competition season how are you kind of
1:38crazy in here today you love chipper
1:41this morning the kids are really really
1:43excited I'm very excited too I love
1:46competition time ready to work we're
1:48ready to work ready for
1:52there I am the artistic director and the
1:55chief choreographer of the ABY Lee Dance
1:57Company right here in Pittsburgh
1:59Pennsylvania

2:04so coue Chen Grand people around the
2:08country know me they know ABY Lee
2:10because I produce
2:13Stars I produce amazing employable
2:16dancers I know how to groom these
2:18children and raise these kids some of
2:21them as if they were my own one and
2:26ah okay stop I've told you three times
2:30in 5 minutes it's not a step out it's a
2:32backand spring two feet do it right
2:35start again suck it up I don't want to
2:38see those tears I'm preparing them for a
2:40career we do it all in my studio so that
2:43when they get to real life they're ready
2:47all right girls it's the first day of
2:49rehearsal for the new competition season
2:51ladies you all know why you're here you
2:54are the cream of the crop in your age
2:56group and I have lots of new ideas in
2:58store I am going to do something that no
3:01other studio in the country does every
3:03single competition we are doing a new
3:07routine girls don't look at your mothers
3:10I am the coach I am the teacher
3:13sometimes when Abby yells it makes me
3:16laugh cuz her face turns red I can make
3:19you or I can break you I mean most dance
3:21studios at least practice for 6 months
3:24before they go on stage and perform
3:25their routines I think it's crazy that
3:28we're going to learn a dance in a week
3:30and compete
3:36it at the beginning of each week I have
3:39kind of like a pyramid thing where
3:41everybody's always trying to get to the
3:42top of that everybody wants to be on top
3:46of course but you have to work for it it
3:48goes on Behavior work ethic attendance
3:51as well as have they followed all the
3:54rules you know all of that goes into
3:57who's going to be at the top of the
3:58pyramid and who's going to get to
4:00compete the next weekend everybody wants
4:02to be front and center I hear it all the
4:04time she puts these kids in a pyramid
4:05it's a nightmare it is a nightmare for a
4:07child and an adult because we have to
4:09stand by and take it whoever is in the
4:11front and center they can't make a
4:13mistake they are holding that group
4:15together everybody always wants to be on
4:17the top usually if you're on the top of
4:19the pyramid you're in the front line so
4:22at the top right here I have Maddie
4:24because she is dedicated and because of
4:29her stellar record last year and
4:31Maddie's on the top and Nia's on the
4:33bottom and I'm a little crushed for Nia
4:36Maddie are you ready to be front and
4:37center can you handle that pressure I
4:40always feel bad because my daughter
4:41seems to always get on the top and the
4:43girls just you know they don't really
4:45like it the moms hate it our first
4:47competition is going to be in Phoenix
4:50Arizona ladies I chose Phoenix Arizona
4:53because I want you to experience some of
4:56the best competition teams in the
4:58country we are going to do two new
5:00numbers a high energy really cute
5:03adorable routine with Maddie Chloe Paige
5:07Brooke and Nia and then also a trio with
5:12Maddie Chloe and Paige unfortunately
5:16McKenzie you're too young to compete at
5:18West Coast Dance Explosion but you're
5:20still going to go with us anyway girls
5:22we are going to win in Phoenix and the
5:24next competition we're going to win and
5:26the next competition we're going to win
5:27and that's all gearing up for now
5:29Nationals everything we do from this
5:32point forward all this training all this
5:34competing is about the Nationals so
5:36let's get to it we are going to begin
5:38the choreography so moms you can be
5:40dismissed and girls let's go to
5:43Nationals and bring home the winning
5:46trophy all right oh we're back to dance
5:49jail up here here's what we're going to
5:52do I want each of you to do either a
5:54chin stand or like a side shoulder stand
5:56and we're going to hold it for eight
5:59counts
6:00do it from the top ready and places go
6:05party party party is a theatrical Jazz
6:08routine it's upbeat it's fun classic
6:11Jazz 2 three 4 2 three 4 up and down
6:17Abby sometimes has favorites in the
6:19studio and my daughter just happens to
6:20be a
6:22favorite these are my two daughters
6:24Maddie and McKenzie Maddy's eight and
6:26MacKenzie's six and they're both dancers
6:29do you have a nice day I definitely
6:32think my girls are like little dolls I
6:33love to dress them up there's you there
6:35me there's me there's me my ex to be it
6:39claims that dance has ruined our
6:41marriage you're going to be in it
6:43probably a lot more even this year and
6:45your sister too Winning is Everything To
6:47Us Maddie has won everything that she's
6:50done in the last year she was undefeated
6:53last year my boyfriend knows how much I
6:55spend on Dance because he signs the
6:58checks so
7:01my ex calls me a crazy dance mom but I
7:03really am not I want our kids to be
7:04happy that's what this is all about it's
7:06about the kids and about them shining on
7:09stage and about them becoming Stars nny
7:11doesn't have a normal life her whole
7:13life revolves around dance it's constant
7:16but she loves
7:17it you can do car wheels all around I
7:20don't care you always tap Abby is a star
7:22maker she's going to make my daughter be
7:25the best she can be and she will make
7:27her a star

7:33girls what are you doing those legs are
7:35about as straight as outon

7:40elbow we are 5 days out from competition
7:43in Phoenix I have a lot of work to do
7:45kids have a lot of work to do and it's
7:47very stressful go
7:51leap oh my God it's like we never left
7:55I've sat up here a million times before
7:57I've seen a thousand dances go on
8:00and you know I'm just kind of hoping
8:01this year turns out a little bit better
8:02for for
8:05Chloe this is my daughter Chloe who is
8:08nine yes I
8:11am this is her State title that she's
8:13won and she's also won a national title
8:16it's my job to make sure all those
8:18little things are taken care of behind
8:20the scenes so that she can be the star
8:22that she needs to be on
8:23[Music]
8:25stage because we're so dedicated to
8:27dance we have missed so much have we had
8:30our award ceremony for what school oh
8:33your grades okay I do find myself at
8:35times you know putting dance before
8:37school and it's probably not right I pay
8:40Abby $116,000 a year to teach my
8:42daughter dance but don't tell my husband
8:45this is petite Miss first runner up 2010
8:48and Maddie won I was her runner up
8:51runner up my daughter was usually number
8:53two but she was always in the mix but
8:55she couldn't quite you know push herself
8:58over the top I'd say that m probably is
9:00Chloe's biggest competition I think that
9:02Chloe's biggest competition's in her own
9:03backyard do you think you'll ever make
9:04it to the top of the
9:06pyramid we can hope right yeah she wants
9:09to be the best she has to beat the best
9:11and Maddie's the best I'm I'm not a big
9:13fan of this new pyramid thing because to
9:17me that's more like a Bermuda Triangle
9:19than a pyramid like it's very divisive
9:22someone at tops one's at the bottom no
9:24teacher does that in a classroom like
9:26you're the star pupil and you're down
9:28here no so are we surprised who's on the
9:31top of the pyramid my God no I would
9:34have been shocked if someone else had
9:35been there now that would have been
9:36surprising m not surpris at the top it's
9:39just it because my kid is the star she
9:42is the most talented girl there and if
9:44anybody has any problems with me I'm
9:46just going to ignore it this year I'm
9:48here for my daughter and I'm not here to
9:49make

9:57Swit and then we're going to take piece
9:59from the old dance that we did last year

10:05go this is my favorite
10:08part when all the moms are watching our
10:10group it's obvious they watch my
10:12daughter because she is the star and

10:17her what's up with mad doesn't feel well
10:20at all like she went like
10:26this if she pukes I'm not cleaning it

10:32mie I know you're not feeling well we
10:33suck it up we got to get through this
10:35okay she looks green practically and
10:38pale that's hor she's crying from the

10:46hip sweetie why why the tears because my
10:50stomach started see that

10:55be in get too emotional you have to

12:13perfectionist in everything she does you
12:15never miss dance let's go she got sick
12:19maybe two years ago at dance but she's
12:21never missed a day of Dance
12:38Maddie works so hard because to make it
12:40to Broadway or to a TV show you really
12:43need to focus on Dance all the time so
12:45we never stop up down down switch split
12:49step hit ball change
13:00we are only 3 days away from competition
13:02in Phoenix this week Maddie Chloe and
13:06Paige are doing a trio in the musical
13:08theater genre do I understand yes knees
13:11together Paige if you're bowlegged you
13:13need to fix that five six seven

13:21you're skinny you're a beautiful girl
13:22you can do better than this focus on
13:24your

13:34am but I'd rather be the one that makes

13:39studio instead of crying in front of 800
13:42people at an open audition I'll be foot

13:59tells them I want to fix their shoulders
14:01and their rib cage distended neck their
14:04turnout everything that's wrong before
14:07somebody else in the professional world
14:08has to tell them Paige come here I'd
14:11have your head on a platter yes do you
14:14understand all right man up get out
14:16there if I see flaws that haven't been
14:18corrected I correct them that's my job
14:21and sometimes that's offensive I think
14:24that's where the tough comes in but it's
14:26like tough love my baby a
14:29don't cry Angel Abby was so it's okay

14:40ite these are my two daughters this is
14:43Paige she's 10 and Brooke is 13 improv
14:46one I'm very proud of my daughters
14:48Brooke has been winning Awards since she
14:50was 6 years old and Paige also last year
14:53she won first place for interview I want
14:55to show you guys something this is Mommy
14:58when she was was your age Brooke I was a
15:00dancer when I was younger I have been
15:02with Abby since I was 2 and a half I
15:04have danced with her for 37 years and I
15:07think that's why when I had two girls I
15:10couldn't wait for them to be dancers I
15:12want to try competitive cheerleading do
15:14you know how many kids in your class
15:16would like to be junior miss dance of
15:18Pennsylvania I don't want Brooke to quit
15:20dance
15:22because she's
15:2413 and that's when all the trouble
15:27starts I mean when you were younger you
15:29used to get first place all the time
15:33like does it matter to you that you're
15:36not getting first and second
15:38anymore not
15:41really I hope that my daughters
15:43appreciate everything I do for them for
15:45Dance I mean I put a lot of time in it
15:47and a lot of times they're mean to me
15:50and don't show me that they appreciate
15:51it but I I think deep down inside I know
15:54that they appreciate it that's
15:56her that's her
15:59five six seven eight I'm optimistic that
16:01Nia will have a great year I want
16:03nothing but the best for her but I also
16:06know that aby's looking at last year's
16:08track record Nia close and T arms I do
16:12worry that Nia won't have a fresh slate
16:15New Year same all same
16:18all Nia has a lot of confidence and I
16:21think Nia has a lot of ability and
16:23talent my goal for Nia this year is
16:25really for Nia to grow as a dancer hi
16:27this is Holly I went to car melon for my
16:29masters and I'm currently at University
16:31of Pennsylvania and I'm also a principal
16:34people say I look like Michelle
16:36Obama that's awesome to be equated to
16:38the first lady I'll take that compliment
16:39any day absolutely I expect Nia this
16:43season to have an amazing year and dance
16:45ideally we would love for her to have a
16:47title win this is my crown but I just
16:50bought it because I had to have one I
16:53haven't won one in dance you haven't won
16:55it yet but it's coming right yeah it's
16:57coming Nia is not feature dancer and
17:00that continues to be an issue and I
17:03don't want Nia to always be the backup
17:04dancer you're going over there it's
17:07forward Abby can be tough she knows her
17:09business very very well I think she
17:11produces excellent answers but she
17:13demands a
17:14lot
17:16okay let me see I am not a doormat and
17:19people cannot walk over me and they
17:21cannot walk over my child and that's
17:23where we draw the line come on give me a
17:25hug I love you one day will be her turn
17:28to shine

18:16quirks I love bunnies they're soft and
18:20they're cuddly and they're cute I like
18:22carrots too I think carrots are neat cuz
18:24they go hand inand with
18:26bunnies pink is my ultimate favorite
18:28color and I like to say that pink is not
18:31a color but it is a way of life I don't
18:34like
18:38pink I'm an older
18:41mom who is very interested in my love
18:44say Botox and
18:47rellin it's important that I look good
18:50because I don't want people to think
18:52that I'm Vivy Grandma you'll like me I'm
18:54flamboyant and I'm funny but just don't
18:57push my buttons and we won't have any
19:03altercations with Vivy being six and
19:06I've coached her now since she's been 18
19:09months old I think that it's time that
19:12we bring somebody else in because if I
19:14say something to Vivy and she's going to
19:16bust out in tears my heart is going to
19:18break because I don't want to do that to
19:21Vivy but if another coach says to her
19:24look Vivy you've got to straighten your
19:26knee on that y scale and that's you have
19:28no options I own Candy Apples Dance
19:30Center does that ring a bell so you're
19:33the dance teacher I am the dance teach
19:35I'm sorry and this is your daughter this
19:38is my daughter so you're here as the mom
19:40I am here as the mom not the dance
19:42teacher no I am you're not looking for a
19:44job oh no okay okay all right we just
19:48wanted to give her a boost I would like
19:51to see her compete with you this weekend

20:01girlfriend we can do it Moms come from
20:03all over to bring their children to me
20:05they want to be a part of the Abby dance

20:18and she's extremely flexible she's got a
20:21beautiful point I'm hoping she has a

20:33you to see it's just a little Duo that
20:34we started this year but she'll just do
20:36it as a solo for you is that okay okay

20:42daughter Vivi audition I thought it was
20:45ridiculous she demanded that she'd be in
20:47this competition this weekend that's not
20:49realistic there is no way Vivan is ready
20:52to compete this weekend I need to work
20:54with her a lot more before she's ready
20:56here's the thing and you know this from
20:59having your own school yes I have people
21:00that want to be in the dance company
21:02just to get the outfit the money doesn't
21:04matter here's my kid do whatever you
21:07want I need Mom to step out of the
21:09picture so I'm going to be the teacher
21:11all right you're going to look at me
21:13maybe it's just time for me to be the
21:15mom and for somebody else to be the
21:17coach Mom I'll take you out front and
21:19we'll get you signed up and ready oh and
21:21you're you're sure we're good on this

21:30be making out when it comes to me and

22:19our knees and they have to be in their

26:26everything is topnotch and they're very
26:28very qualified

26:37moving when we walk in anywhere for a
26:39dance competition we're like the glammed
26:41up Beverly Hillbillies I mean we've got
26:43dream duffles and rolling makeup cases
26:46and light up makeup mirrors don't just
26:47do that let's go
26:50ladies whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa no no no
26:52no no she has two pieces of luggage Abby
26:54she brings it she carries it now
26:56remember the comp competition starts
26:59right now when you walk into this
27:00building do you understand me let's go
27:03every time that ABY Le Dan's company
27:05walks into a competition they're
27:07representing a legacy kids who've danced
27:09before them that were amazing and so
27:10much is at stake because we don't want
27:12to be the ones who lose iby Lee Miller I

28:29the fact that the hats weren't done an
28:31hour before we were going on stage is
28:33very typical we are always stoning
28:36costumes 5 minutes before we go on or
28:40doing the hats I don't everything is
28:42always last minute same thing it's over
28:44and over every time we compete I told
28:46you about the nails I don't care if you
28:47have fake nails but the nail polish the
28:50white draws attention to your hands and
28:52everybody doesn't have it girls I told
28:54her I wasn't taking it off so why
28:58because I just paid to have them done
29:00but you it's a French it's not like she
29:02has pink purple nail polish I don't
29:03think this is where we're supposed to be
29:04going I think I'm supposed to be talking
29:05about the group and AI it's whatever
29:08it's not whatever brought right you need
29:10to listen to but then you can give me
29:11the $20 to take them off of her nails
29:13and off of her sister's nails can you
29:15hear me my purse give me 20
29:18bucks hey do you want to get a drink the
29:24down let's sit down and have a drink
29:27nobody will know where we are we're
29:28missing an
29:29action she screams at those kids one
