- 1:40I'm starting my own paper. Show you how
- 1:42it works.
- 1:52Go faster.
- 2:04I'll get a job, a house, couple kids.
- 2:08Don't worry, I got it all worked out.
- 2:12Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the
- 2:15newest and youngest addition to the
- 2:16tribute team, Lee Stroel.
- 2:35>> It is my distinct pleasure to honor one
- 2:37of our own for his nationally acclaimed
- 2:39Fort Pinto investigative series. Lee,
- 2:42your work has given justice to families
- 2:44across the country and peeled back a
- 2:46corporate cover up. So, I present you
- 2:48with the Lennhall Memorial Award for
- 2:51Community Service Journalism and
- 2:53congratulations on your promotion to
- 2:55Legal Affairs Editor.
- 3:05>> Thank you, Mr. Cook, for the award, for
- 3:07the promotion. Um, mostly for the
- 3:10promotion. Uh,
- 3:14>> the only way to truth is through facts.
- 3:17Facts are our greatest weapon against
- 3:20superstition, against ignorance, and
- 3:23against tyranny. Now, I learned those
- 3:25words from my mentor, Mr. Ray Nelson.
- 3:28Everybody, let's let him hear it. Huh?
- 3:30[applause and cheering]
- 3:31Bring it on.
- 3:34>> Now, you all know Ry. He's a legend in
- 3:36the business. But to me, Ry, you've been
- 3:39more like a father. So, thank you.
- 3:42>> Thank you. Thank you, son.
- 3:44>> Most importantly, I owe this honor to my
- 3:47beautiful and very patient and very
- 3:50pregnant wife, [laughter] uh, and to my
- 3:53favorite little lady, Alison. I love you
- 3:56both more than you'll ever know.
- 4:02>> Now, can we eat
- 4:06that? Thank you.
- 4:12I got
- 4:14>> Well, then of course she finds the
- 4:16biggest word on here, right?
- 4:18>> Asparagus.
- 4:19Wow, that is a big word.
- 4:21>> Not for a girl who's lost a tooth.
- 4:23>> Oh, okay.
- 4:24>> I'm still impressed.
- 4:26>> Big girl who didn't eat her dinner?
- 4:28>> Full.
- 4:28>> You're full?
- 4:29>> Is that right?
- 4:29>> Are you going to tell me you're hungry
- 4:31when we get home?
- 4:32>> All right. I'm going to give you dessert
- 4:33if you eat one more noodle.
- 4:36>> That was easy. See, just have to bribe
- 4:38them a little bit.
- 4:41>> We done. Show me done.
- 4:43>> There's still spaghetti [laughter] in
- 4:44there. Swallow that.
- 4:46>> Take this. Go.
- 4:49>> Good work.
- 4:54>> You know, I'm feeling pretty good about
- 4:55myself.
- 4:56>> Yeah.
- 4:56>> Mhm.
- 4:57>> How's that?
- 4:58>> I am married to a published author.
- 5:02>> It's very impressive.
- 5:03>> Mhm. Isn't it?
- 5:04>> Mhm. I'm
- 5:05>> proud of you. Thank you.
- 5:09>> I love you.
- 5:10>> I love you.
- 5:11>> You and only you.
- 5:16>> Mhm.
- 5:16>> Sweetie.
- 5:19>> What is it? Are you choking?
- 5:20>> I think she's choking.
- 5:22>> Can you call?
- 5:23>> Hey, sweetie. Just breathe on me. Okay.
- 5:25Allie,
- 5:26>> everybody, please just give her some.
- 5:29>> Allie, I'm right here.
- 5:30>> Come on. Come on.
- 5:31>> Hey, baby. It's going to be
- 5:32>> Can SOMEBODY HELP US? PLEASE CALL AN
- 5:33AMBULANCE.
- 5:35It's okay, baby.
- 5:36>> Look at daddy. Okay. Okay. Breathe for
- 5:38me. You're going to be all right. I I
- 5:40Baby, I'm right here. I don't know what
- 5:42I don't know.
- 5:43>> I love you, sweetheart. Just hang quick.
- 5:45I'm a nurse. Allie, quick.
- 5:48>> Okay. Just stay calm. Come on. Come on.
- 5:50Allie, go for me.
- 5:52I can't breathe.
- 6:00[music]
- 6:04>> Sweetie,
- 6:04>> cough, baby. Cough, baby.
- 6:10>> She's coughing. She's fine now. She's
- 6:11fine.
- 6:12>> Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you.
- 6:16>> I don't know how to thank you.
- 6:19>> You don't have to thank me. I'm a nurse
- 6:21at Mercy Hospital. She's going to be
- 6:24fine now.
- 6:25>> We are so lucky.
- 6:27>> Well, it's not luck. It's Jesus. My
- 6:30husband and I on our way to another
- 6:32restaurant tonight. Something told me I
- 6:35need to be here.
- 6:38>> Wow. Thank you. Um Lesie Alfie Alfie
- 6:42Davis,
- 6:42>> I'm not going to forget you. [laughter]
- 6:44>> God bless you.
- 6:48>> [sighs]
- 6:50>> Just keeping it interesting, huh?
- 6:58>> I can see, right?
- 7:01>> We'll have to see about that. Get some
- 7:04sleep now. All right, Missy.
- 7:09>> Who's Jesus?
- 7:12>> Jesus was a man. great man. And you
- 7:17know, we've talked about God, right?
- 7:19>> You know how mommy and daddy read you
- 7:20stories at night? You know, the fairy
- 7:22tales that you like. So believing in God
- 7:26is kind of like that. It's really nice
- 7:28stories. But we are atheists. Atheists
- 7:31don't believe in God.
- 7:33>> What do they believe?
- 7:35>> Uh they believe in what's real, in what
- 7:39we can see, what we can touch.
- 7:42>> Like what? Oh,
- 7:45like this.
- 7:50>> Well, I guess I'm an atheist, too.
- 7:53>> Get some sleep, booger. Okay,
- 7:56there's Barry. There you go.
- 8:00Fudge pop. All right, sleep good. I love
- 8:03you,
- 8:04>> Daddy.
- 8:06>> Yes, love.
- 8:07>> Good night.
- 8:09>> Good night, baby.
- 8:13I thought we said we weren't going to
- 8:14force anything on her.
- 8:16>> She asked,
- 8:17>> right? So, as long as it's what we
- 8:18believe. Oh,
- 8:19>> are we really going to go around on this
- 8:21again, Les?
- 8:22>> I guess so.
- 8:23>> Babe, I
- 8:26I am grateful for what that woman did
- 8:28tonight, obviously.
- 8:31But it was it's a coincidence. It didn't
- 8:33mean anything.
- 8:34>> How can you say that? She was going to
- 8:36another restaurant and something made
- 8:38her come to ours. You think that means
- 8:40nothing? I know it means nothing.
- 8:44>> Can I tell you what it means? It means
- 8:45that we would have lost Allison.
- 8:48If that woman hadn't been there, we
- 8:49would have lost her. Our whole world
- 8:51would have changed forever.
- 8:53>> Yes. But it didn't.
- 8:55Okay.
- 8:57We're all okay. Everyone's okay.
- 9:17Hey, Chief.
- 9:18>> You know, I could have edited three
- 9:19pieces with my red pencil in the time it
- 9:21takes me to do one piece on this
- 9:23ridiculous thing.
- 9:24>> My new book. Just picked these up from
- 9:26the mail room. Would you be the first to
- 9:28say it?
- 9:31>> Yeah, there's a cop shooting this
- 9:33weekend. Englewood. Officer Survive. See
- 9:35what you can get me on the shooter.
- 9:37James Hicks.
- 9:38>> No, that's copy. I'm legal affairs now.
- 9:40Why don't you give that to Monroe?
- 9:41>> Now, you may be a golden boy to the
- 9:43suits upstairs, but to me, you're still
- 9:45just a beat reporter here.
- 9:53>> Don't close the
- 9:55>> London.
- 9:57>> Want an autographed copy of my new book?
- 10:00>> Not one bit.
- 10:04Jealousy doesn't look good on you, my
- 10:06friend. And again, nothing does.
- 10:08>> Overnight legal briefs make you trouble.
- 10:11>> Thanks, Rod. Hey, I want you to go
- 10:13through yesterday's local rag. See if we
- 10:15reported on a cop shooting. Per's name
- 10:17is Hicks. James Hicks.
- 10:19>> Hicks. James Hicks.
- 10:20>> Sure. Okay.
- 10:21>> You got 30 minutes.
- 10:24>> I'll take a book if they're still
- 10:25offering.
- 10:27>> Hey, London. You hear that?
- 10:29>> Got my first taker. He had known any
- 10:31better.
- 10:31>> You're going to go far in this business,
- 10:33kid. Even if you are sucking up.
- 10:35>> 29 minutes, Rod.
- 10:40>> 241 bed 2 going home today. Want to prep
- 10:43for discharge, please?
- 10:47>> Leslie.
- 10:48>> Yes. Hi, Alfie. Yes. Um, muffins.
- 10:56I have not
- 10:58been able to stop thinking about it.
- 11:03What if you hadn't been there?
- 11:05>> There is no what if with God.
- 11:09>> You're so sure.
- 11:13>> How can you be so sure?
- 11:15>> Do you really want an answer to that?
- 11:21Please
- 11:34>> whose soul are you we
- 11:41No light in the darkness. You [singing]
- 11:45see
- 11:48there's light. [singing]
- 11:51>> Sometimes God speaks to us in unexpected
- 11:54and surprising [music] ways. So tonight,
- 11:56for example, if you find yourself here
- 11:58for the first time, I just want to
- 12:00encourage you to open your heart and
- 12:02take a chance. Maybe God's trying to get
- 12:05your attention right now. And trust me,
- 12:08if you listen expectantly for his
- 12:10whispers, you'll hear them.
- 12:13>> You will. Maybe you're afraid. Maybe you
- 12:16have doubts. Maybe you've felt something
- 12:19missing in your life and you don't know
- 12:21quite what it is. That's fine. God is
- 12:24patient. And when you're ready, I
- 12:27promise you, he'll be right there
- 12:29waiting for you with open arms.
- 12:36Hey.
- 12:37>> Hey.
- 12:38>> Sorry, miss dinner. Your boss's piling
- 12:40on the work. I think he's punishing me
- 12:42for the award. How was your day?
- 12:48>> Good.
- 12:50It was good.
- 12:59Officer Kabinsky,
- 13:02who are you? Le trouble. I'm with the
- 13:04Chicago Tribune. Close call, huh?
- 13:08>> So, I'm looking to do a story on the
- 13:10shooting. You know, you're coping the
- 13:13line of duty. That whole angle.
- 13:14>> I'm not supposed to talk to anybody from
- 13:16the press.
- 13:16>> I know. But you got to be able to give
- 13:17me something.
- 13:18>> Know the deal. Not while it's under
- 13:20investigation.
- 13:21>> Look, I read your report. I know you and
- 13:23James Hicks got in the scuffle. I know
- 13:25he shot you, but come on. Give me a
- 13:27little something off the record. Why do
- 13:28you think he did it? Huh?
- 13:32Thanks anyway. Okay.
- 13:33>> Yeah. All right.
- 13:36I will go find another hero cop to you.
- 13:41>> Mr. Straw doing a story.
- 13:44>> Yeah.
- 13:45Who are the gang bangers who did this?
- 13:49Put him away for good.
- 13:54Feel better, huh?
- 13:59We find the answer right here in the
- 14:01book of John 1:12.
- 14:04But as many as received him, to them he
- 14:07gave the right to become children of God
- 14:09to those who believe in his name. So
- 14:13what does it mean to not just believe
- 14:15but receive? And how does it lead us?
- 14:18>> So did you ever go to church?
- 14:20>> Yeah, I went to church as a girl
- 14:23>> and my mom sung hymns to me.
- 14:27But Lee and I moved on from how we were
- 14:30raised.
- 14:31>> And what is it that Lee believes? So
- 14:34again,
- 14:36>> just the facts.
- 14:39>> I've always been kind of curious, but uh
- 14:43lately, you know, having Allison and now
- 14:49it's just starting to seem more
- 14:51important to know.
- 14:54And I don't believe that it was a
- 14:56coincidence that you came to the
- 14:57restaurant. I don't. So,
- 15:02what do I do with that?
- 15:04>> What do you think we should do?
- 15:07>> I don't know. I've just
- 15:12I've just spent
- 15:15most of my life feeling like God is a
- 15:18million miles away.
- 15:18>> Oh, no. Sweetheart,
- 15:22million miles away.
- 15:25right here
- 15:28right now
- 15:30waiting for you
- 15:32to
- 15:50the TV's all staticky again. tried
- 15:53banging on it. That's not working
- 15:54anymore.
- 15:55>> Did you check the roof?
- 15:56>> Yeah, the uh antenna's fine. Maybe you
- 15:58should call the repair guy, see if he
- 16:01can come by and take a peek at it
- 16:02tomorrow.
- 16:02>> Sure.
- 16:05>> Hey, so I went to see Alfie last week.
- 16:08>> Uh Alfie. Alfie. Alfie.
- 16:11>> Alfie. Alfie. Superwoman who saved our
- 16:14daughter,
- 16:14>> right?
- 16:15>> Alfie. So, uh she invited me to her
- 16:19church and I went
- 16:22Really? Oh, I would have loved to have
- 16:25seen that.
- 16:26>> Yeah, well, I wanted to go.
- 16:29[sighs]
- 16:30>> Can't we just give it a break, Les?
- 16:32Okay. I know you were rattled the other
- 16:33night.
- 16:34>> Are you interested in hearing me or just
- 16:35condescending?
- 16:36>> No, that's not that's not what I'm
- 16:37trying to do here. Okay, Alison's fine,
- 16:40hun. Let's not go crazy.
- 16:41>> I'm not acting crazy. Am I acting crazy?
- 16:44>> It was a wrong choice of words. I don't
- 16:45think you're crazy. I think you're
- 16:47pregnant and a little crazy and scared
- 16:51and I get it.
- 16:53>> Do you? Because I'm not done yet.
- 16:57>> Okay.
- 17:00>> So, I went to church and I don't know
- 17:03exactly how it happened, but
- 17:06I felt something.
- 17:10And so, I went again tonight. And I know
- 17:15this is going to be weird to because
- 17:16it's weird to say, but
- 17:20I prayed.
- 17:24>> So, what are you what are you telling
- 17:25me, Les?
- 17:27>> I'm saying that I talked to Jesus. I I
- 17:32told him I want him in my life.
- 17:37>> You what? Why? Why would
- 17:40>> Hey, stay with me, hun. This is a good
- 17:43thing.
- 17:43>> What did this Alfie woman say to you? It
- 17:45was my decision. Okay.
- 17:47>> I don't accept it.
- 17:49>> You don't get to accept it. I'm not
- 17:51asking. I'm telling you what happened
- 17:52and you're not hearing me.
- 17:54>> Okay.
- 17:56Listen, hun. It's me. This is me talking
- 17:58to you. It's me. Honestly,
- 18:02this is something that I think I've been
- 18:03thinking for a long time, and I just
- 18:04haven't been able to to say anything
- 18:07because of who you are.
- 18:09>> Are you kidding me, Les?
- 18:10>> I know this is a lot.
- 18:11>> A lot. A lot. You dropped this on me.
- 18:14What does that even mean?
- 18:15>> Well, I don't know what it means, but I
- 18:16know it's a good thing for me. For us?
- 18:18>> No. Okay. Okay. This is not us, Lesie.
- 18:21Whatever this is. Okay. It is not us.
- 18:23You are listen to me. Not yet.
- 18:24>> I am listening to you, then that's the
- 18:26problem. So, if you're serious about
- 18:27this? Okay. Well, then I then I don't
- 18:29know what to say to you about then. Just
- 18:32listen to what I'm trying to say because
- 18:33I'm trying to explain that I felt
- 18:35something that is maybe more real than
- 18:36anything I've ever felt in my life.
- 18:41more real than anything you've felt in
- 18:44your life.
- 18:45>> Okay, I'm not trying to compare.
- 18:47>> Got it. No, you know what? I don't want
- 18:48to hear any more of this. Okay,
- 18:50>> pun. Where are you going?
- 18:52>> File a missing person's report.
- 18:54>> That's not funny.
- 18:55>> Not meant to be.
- 20:04I love you.
- 20:08You and only you.
- 20:28I feel like I can get through to her
- 20:30before she gets too deep. But I
- 20:32remembered you went through something
- 20:33like this with your daughter with Lori,
- 20:35right?
- 20:36>> Yes. Yes, I did.
- 20:39It's a conundrum. You see, in times of
- 20:41crisis, we humans tend to seek meaning,
- 20:43don't we? You've read Bertrren and
- 20:45Russell, of course.
- 20:46>> Yeah, of course. I mean, not since
- 20:49college, but
- 20:52There's no way that Leslie would read
- 20:53that right now.
- 20:54>> Yeah, my daughter wouldn't either. But I
- 20:57kept picking away at the delusion until
- 20:58she finally came around.
- 21:01But I got to tell you, Lee,
- 21:05doesn't come without a price.
- 21:07>> How do you mean?
- 21:08>> Whatever this is for Leslie, maybe it's
- 21:10not such a terrible thing. I mean, it
- 21:14brings her comfort.
- 21:16Are you sure it's not something you can
- 21:18live with?
- 21:18>> Yes, I'm sure. I'm not going to lose my
- 21:20wife and my kids to something that I
- 21:22can't even reason with. No, I can't even
- 21:25pretend to go along with this, right? I
- 21:27mean, you of all people should
- 21:28understand that.
- 21:29>> I do. And I know that Leslie is a
- 21:32reasonable woman, so I think
- 21:34[clears throat] that reason is probably
- 21:35the best approach. And as always, it
- 21:39comes down to facts and truth. Now, you
- 21:43present her with the facts,
- 21:46and I'm sure she will find her way back
- 21:47to the truth.
- 21:49Meanwhile, my collection is at your
- 21:51disposal. Take your time.
- 21:53>> Appreciate it, Ray.
- 21:54>> Oh, Lee, one more thing.
- 21:57I'll be praying for you.
- 21:59>> That's not even funny.
- 22:04>> Kenny, let me ask you something. Uh,
- 22:06you're into all this God nonsense.
- 22:08>> Wow, you sure know how to turn a source.
- 22:11>> A bunch of Bible thumpers got to Leslie.
- 22:14Um,
- 22:15afraid she joined your cult. So, if
- 22:17somebody Somebody want to do an
- 22:19investigation to Christianity.
- 22:21>> Oh, like a headpiece.
- 22:23>> Well, you know, if that's where the
- 22:25evidence leads,
- 22:29>> seems to me you got yourself a catch 22.
- 22:32>> What's that?
- 22:33>> Let's say you debunk Christianity. How's
- 22:35Leslie going to live with the man who
- 22:36destroyed the very thing that now gives
- 22:38her life meaning?
- 22:40>> Well, I because I should be the thing.
- 22:42>> And then what if Leslie's right and you
- 22:45prove your theory of science and reason
- 22:47wrong? How you going to live with
- 22:48yourself?
- 22:50>> I'm willing to take that chance.
- 22:52>> Okay. You're a journalist. Check it out.
- 23:02>> Where would you start?
- 23:03>> Unless you want to do two years of
- 23:05seminary, I'd say go straight for the
- 23:07jugular. The entire Christian faith
- 23:08hinges on the resurrection of Jesus. If
- 23:10it didn't happen, it's a house of cards.
- 23:12He's reduced to a misunderstood rabbi at
- 23:14best. At worst, he's a lunatic who was
- 23:17martyed.
- 23:17>> For a guy who thinks I'm trying to
- 23:19assassinate Christianity,
- 23:21>> you sure you want to hand me that gun?
- 23:23>> I'm pretty sure you're not going to be
- 23:24able to pull the trigger.
- 23:26>> All right. Who's the big authority on
- 23:27the resurrection?
- 23:33>> Dr. Gary Habermass cuz he debated
- 23:36Anthony Flu. That guy's one of my
- 23:37heroes.
- 23:38>> He's in Wisconsin, by the way. Big
- 23:40debate this weekend.
- 23:41>> Wisconsin.
- 23:42>> Mhm.
- 23:42>> We'll go to Wisconsin.
- 23:50spike in gang violence especially in the
- 23:52communities of River Lincoln Park and
- 23:54Englewood as evidence.
- 23:56>> Dr. Harour Mass, if Christians want to
- 23:58hold on to their belief in a giant
- 24:01cosmic imaginary friend,
- 24:04that's all well and good, but don't try
- 24:05to stand your historical technique up
- 24:08against a tsunami of legitimate
- 24:11scholarship. You will drown.
- 24:15>> Well, thank you for the warning, Dr.
- 24:17Singer. But are you not aware that Gird
- 24:19Lutterman, one of the most famous
- 24:21atheist New Testament scholars, now
- 24:23believes that the earliest known report
- 24:26of the resurrection was formed no more
- 24:27than 3 years after the cross. Now, these
- 24:30are your colleagues, sir, not mine.
- 24:33>> Something you like to ask me, Mr.
- 24:34Strobble?
- 24:35>> Yeah. Well, I I read your book and
- 24:37there's something that stuck out to me.
- 24:39How can anyone talk about historical
- 24:42evidence for the resurrection when the
- 24:43resurrection by nature is a miracle,
- 24:46right? We all know miracles can't be
- 24:48proven scientifically.
- 24:49>> Correct. But we don't have to prove a
- 24:50miracle to prove a resurrection.
- 24:53>> Okay. Love to hear you explain that one.
- 24:55>> Yeah. You just have to show that Jesus
- 24:56died and he was seen afterwards.
- 24:59>> Right. But the very people who claim
- 25:00that they saw him are religious zealots.
- 25:02So in my line of work, we call those
- 25:04biased sources.
- 25:05>> Well, I'm not interested in bias either,
- 25:07Mr. Strobble. You see, I care about the
- 25:09facts for professional and and personal
- 25:12reasons,
- 25:13>> right? So, where are the facts, Dr.
- 25:14Habermass?
- 25:16The resurrection narrative is more
- 25:18legend than it is history.
- 25:20>> Really? Well, not according to
- 25:21historical records.
- 25:22>> Did you know that we have a report of
- 25:24the resurrection with specific
- 25:25eyewitnesses that dates all the way back
- 25:27to within months of the resurrection
- 25:28itself? That source also adds that 500
- 25:31separate people saw Jesus at the same
- 25:33time. We're not talking decades or
- 25:36centuries after the cross, Mr. Strobble.
- 25:39It's months.
- 25:42Hey, you a coffee drinker?
- 25:46>> Sure.
- 25:51>> Too short to reach the faucet. When am I
- 25:55going to be taller?
- 25:57>> Before you know it.
- 26:07Nothing's wrong.
- 26:11It's just the little one saying hello.
- 26:17>> Okay, so 500 witnesses, but that's still
- 26:20just one historical source, the Bible.
- 26:23There are at least nine ancient sources
- 26:25both inside and outside the Bible
- 26:27confirming that disciples and others
- 26:29encountered Jesus after the crucifixion.
- 26:32>> But but they were already followers of
- 26:34Jesus.
- 26:35>> Well, not all of them. Think of
- 26:36Solarsus. He originally was a persecutor
- 26:39of Christians. He hunted them down and
- 26:41killed them. Yet, he died the Apostle
- 26:44Paul proclaiming that Jesus was the son
- 26:47of God.
- 26:48>> But but let's not kid ourselves here.
- 26:49People die for lies all the time.
- 26:52>> 900 people died drinking poison Kool-Aid
- 26:54at Jonestown.
- 26:55>> True. And there are other examples like
- 26:57that throughout history. But here's the
- 26:58difference. People don't willingly drink
- 27:01poison for something that they know is a
- 27:03lie.
- 27:05>> Fair point.
- 27:06>> If the early church martyrs knew that
- 27:08the resurrection was a hoax,
- 27:11then why would they willingly die for
- 27:12it? Would you?
- 27:14>> Um, I want to go back to something that
- 27:16you said earlier. You said that uh that
- 27:18this was personal to you. Why is that?
- 27:22>> I lost my wife Debbie to cancer.
- 27:25>> I'm sorry about that.
- 27:26>> It was the worst thing that will ever
- 27:28happen to me.
- 27:31But in my time of loss, it it made me
- 27:33confront my beliefs.
- 27:36That is where I found my true comfort
- 27:38because I know that I'm going to see my
- 27:41wife again someday.
- 27:43And forgive me, but a as a man who who
- 27:48claims to value hard evidence, don't you
- 27:52find that that sort of um hopeful
- 27:55thinking weakens your argument?
- 27:57>> Not one bit.
- 28:00>> The fact that I benefit from gravity
- 28:02isn't proof that it's real. Just as my
- 28:05dislike for mosquitoes isn't an argument
- 28:07against their existence.
- 28:10You see, what I what I want and what I
- 28:13don't want has no impact on truth. That
- 28:17being said, if Christ's resurrection
- 28:18means that I get to be with Debbie
- 28:20again, I have no problem being happy
- 28:22about that.
- 28:24Sometimes truth reminds us of what's
- 28:26really important.
- 29:09Oh, Lee. Lee. Le
- 29:13Alfie, remember me?
- 29:14>> Of course. What happened?
- 29:15>> Okay. Well, her water broke. She
- 29:17couldn't reach you, so she called me and
- 29:19we'll hide you over here
- 29:20>> again. Thank you. I'll take you from
- 29:23here.
- 29:25>> Aless
- 29:29big helper for mama.
- 29:31>> Where were you?
- 29:32>> I was paged you and I ped you and I
- 29:37>> Yeah.
- 29:37>> You okay?
- 29:39>> He's beautiful. They're cleaning him up.
- 29:41We were at home and I started cramping
- 29:44and Ally was scared
- 29:47>> and we prayed and everything got better.
- 29:52>> Good. I'm glad
- 29:56[crying]
- 30:04[crying]
- 30:10your son Christopher.
- 30:42You should call your parents. Don't you
- 30:44think
- 30:51people can change?
- 30:59Well, the announcement's in the paper.
- 31:01They can read it just like everybody
- 31:03else.
- 31:18Tomorrow's tomorrow.
- 32:19Good gracious.
- 32:29[snorts]
- 32:54Mr. Marlo,
- 32:56please struggle with Chicago Tribune.
- 32:58>> You'll have to excuse me.
- 33:00>> Yes, sir. You've been dodging my calls
- 33:02about James Hicks for over a week. I
- 33:03tried talking to PD. They won't tell me
- 33:05anything either. Why can't I get a
- 33:07statement from anyone? What's the big
- 33:08secret?
- 33:11>> You know what? Why don't you come to the
- 33:14jail and talk to my client yourself?
- 33:17>> Maybe you can get him to say more to you
- 33:19than I'll say to me.
- 33:30>> Mr. Hicks, I'm Lee Strobe. I'm with the
- 33:33the Chicago Tribune. I'd like to talk to
- 33:34you about the shooting.
- 33:36I figured that maybe you'd want to give
- 33:38me uh your side of things. You know,
- 33:42help yourself out a bit here.
- 33:44>> I didn't do nothing.
- 33:46>> Okay. So then, so then tell me how it
- 33:48all went down.
- 33:49>> I don't know. It's fuzzy. Joe started
- 33:51shoving it around for no reason.
- 33:53>> Who's Joe?
- 33:54>> Kablinsky.
- 33:55>> The cop. Kablinski.
- 33:58He put his hands on me, so I fought back
- 34:00like anyone would. We go at it for a
- 34:03bit, then a gun goes off. Whose gun?
- 34:05>> I don't know. Like I told you, I was
- 34:07drinking that night. It was fuzzy.
- 34:08>> Crime scene report says they found your
- 34:1022 caliber pistol in the bushes that it
- 34:12was missing a bullet that had your
- 34:13prints all over it. Kablinsky carries a
- 34:1638. His gun was never fired. In fact, it
- 34:19was never taken out of its holster. So,
- 34:22if you didn't shoot him, then who did?
- 34:26My old lady kicked me out that night. I
- 34:29got a little crazy, you know, fired off
- 34:31around at the building,
- 34:33but I didn't aim it at nobody or hurt
- 34:35nobody. I tossed my piece in the bushes
- 34:39when Kablinsky rolled up on me.
- 34:41>> That's it. He tossed it in the bushes.
- 34:42>> I tossed it in the bushes.
- 34:48>> Mr. Hicks, are you still affiliated with
- 34:49the Gangster Disciples?
- 34:53>> You know what this is? This a waste of
- 34:55my time.
- 34:57God.
- 34:59>> Sir, I I am trying to help you here. And
- 35:00nothing that you've told me is going to
- 35:02change the evidence that's stacked
- 35:03against you, which right now is pretty
- 35:05overwhelming.
- 35:05>> What you talking about? You don't know
- 35:07me.
- 35:08>> Okay, sir. You got to come up with a
- 35:09better excuse than the dog ate my bullet
- 35:11if you're going to beat this thing. Mr.
- 35:12Hicks,
- 35:16>> your client's guilty of sin. You know
- 35:18that, right? Really?
- 36:08Father Marquez Lee Strobo, thank you for
- 36:11seeing me. Of course,
- 36:12>> I uh I should tell you I'm a bit of a
- 36:14history buff myself, so I'm I'm I'm
- 36:17particularly intrigued with your
- 36:19archaeological work.
- 36:20>> Ah, former life. former life. Yes.
- 36:24>> I'm uh I'm a bit surprised given your uh
- 36:27your stellar reputation that you just
- 36:29gave all that up for uh this.
- 36:33>> Would you like to be more specific?
- 36:35>> Well, it just seems to me that for the
- 36:37better part of 2,000 years, Christianity
- 36:40has been creating these these rituals
- 36:42and these rules. You know, they've
- 36:44erected these elaborate and often
- 36:47expensive cathedrals and all of that to
- 36:50support a faith that I believe is is
- 36:52ultimately built on sand.
- 36:54>> And yet it's all still standing.
- 36:57>> Yes. Because people keep telling each
- 36:59other the same stories over and over
- 37:01again. Just because I write something
- 37:02down and I bury it in the dirt, that
- 37:04doesn't make it true.
- 37:06>> I think I'm beginning to see the crux of
- 37:08your visit.
- 37:10Look, I I understand that a number of
- 37:14people claimed to have seen Jesus after
- 37:17his crucifixion, and some of them even
- 37:19wrote it down. But I guess my question
- 37:21is, how how can we be sure of the
- 37:24reliability of those manuscripts?
- 37:26>> Well, the same way we authenticate any
- 37:28historical document by comparing and
- 37:30contrasting the copies that have been
- 37:32recovered. It's called textual
- 37:34criticism. The more copies we have, the
- 37:37better that we can cross reference and
- 37:40figure out if what the original was
- 37:41saying is historically accurate. And the
- 37:44earlier they come from in history, the
- 37:46better. Take homeless Iliad for example.
- 37:56Is this real?
- 37:57>> That's as real as the Macedonian dirt
- 37:59that I dug it up from. The Greeks
- 38:01considered this their Bible for many
- 38:03centuries.
- 38:04>> Yes, they did. That is one of 1565
- 38:09copies in existence today. Now, the
- 38:11Iliad was originally composed 800 years
- 38:14before Christ.
- 38:16This Greek copy is dated at the 3rd
- 38:19century AD. [sighs]
- 38:22>> So 800. So that's that's 1100 years
- 38:27between this copy and the original. Yes.
- 38:29Correct. There is only one ancient
- 38:32collection of writings that has more
- 38:35authenticated copies than the Iliad. Can
- 38:37you guess what that is?
- 38:38>> You're going to tell me the Bible.
- 38:39>> The New Testament.
- 38:41>> And how many copies is that?
- 38:42>> To date, archaeologists have recovered
- 38:445,843
- 38:46Greek New Testament manuscripts.
- 38:49That's four times as many as the Iliad.
- 38:52>> Really?
- 38:53>> The earliest fragment of the Gospel of
- 38:56John was found in ancient Egypt. and it
- 38:59dates to 2n century AD.
- 39:02>> How close is that to the original? Less
- 39:04than 30 years.
- 39:06>> I have one of the fragments in my
- 39:09collection.
- 39:10It's quite a treasure, isn't it?
- 39:13>> After the New Testament and the Iliad,
- 39:16the runners up don't even come close. We
- 39:18only have 100 copies of Sophocles, seven
- 39:20copies of Plato's tetrologies, and only
- 39:23five copies of anything by Aristotle. In
- 39:26fact, if you laid the surviving copies
- 39:29of Aristotle one on top of the other,
- 39:32they would make barely 4 feet. You do
- 39:35the same with surviving copies of the
- 39:37New Testament, the stack would be a mile
- 39:39high. Nothing else in history even comes
- 39:43close.
- 39:45How was that for reliable?
- 39:49>> Oh, father, I certainly appreciate it.
- 39:51You've given me a lot of food for
- 39:53thought.
- 39:53>> Entirely my pleasure.
- 39:55Oh wow. The shroud of torin. That is a
- 39:58fantastic reproduction.
- 40:00>> The actual shroud is in the cathedral of
- 40:02St. John the Baptist in Italy under lock
- 40:05and key.
- 40:05>> Of course, no one's ever proven if the
- 40:08shroud is the actual burial cloth of the
- 40:11Christ.
- 40:13But whenever someone looks in those eyes
- 40:15for the first time, the Galilean who
- 40:18hung on the cross two millennia ago
- 40:21suddenly becomes a real person.
- 40:24But why would he do it? Why why allow
- 40:27himself to be killed? If if he really is
- 40:29the the son of God, why not use his
- 40:33power to defend himself?
- 40:34>> The answer to that is what got me out of
- 40:36the dirt and into the church. It's
- 40:38really very simple.
- 40:41Love.
- 40:47Love.
- 40:57>> [singing]
- 41:01>> There'll be
- 41:03[singing]
- 41:05lay [music] to rest.
- 41:10[singing]
- 41:11>> You're saying that the historical Christ
- 41:13is identical to the religious basis for
- 41:16Jesus Christ. That's it.
- 41:18>> Dr. for one second, please. I least
- 41:22trouble with the Chicago.
- 41:24Dr. Ben Wington told me he'd be letting
- 41:26you know that I'd be calling.
- 41:28>> Well, no. I just wanted to check on the
- 41:29validity of a few historical documents.
- 41:32And if I claim to be a wise [music] mans
- 41:37that I don't know
- 41:41of moving
- 41:43to like a ship on the ocean'll
- 41:59beace.
- 42:14>> [crying]
- 42:26>> One, two, Three.
- 42:32How many does it take to get
- 42:37the world
- 42:39>> on Earth? It's 3 in the morning.
- 42:43What you doing?
- 42:45>> We search for story.
- 42:48>> What's your story on? Imported German
- 42:51beer.
- 42:51>> Oh, the judgment. Here it comes.
- 42:53>> I'm not judging you. I'm worried. Huh?
- 42:56You've been up late every night or out?
- 42:59I just I feel like you're not here with
- 43:01me.
- 43:01>> Well, whose fault is that, Leslie?
- 43:05>> Okay, you've obviously had one too many.
- 43:07You're paying a jerk.
- 43:08>> So, this is my fault then, sweetheart.
- 43:11I'm not the one who went and changed.
- 43:13You did that. I don't know. Maybe I
- 43:15wasn't enough for you. Maybe you had to
- 43:18go find yourself a new man.
- 43:20>> What?
- 43:21>> Yes. You're cheating on me with Jesus.
- 43:26>> You're hilarious. You went off the deep
- 43:28end and now you're pissed off cuz I
- 43:29won't jump in after you.
- 43:31>> I'm going to sit this one out. All
- 43:33right,
- 43:34>> great.
- 43:34>> I'm going back to sleep.
- 43:37>> I'm a crash on the couch.
- 43:39>> Fine.
- 43:39>> Hey, I didn't sign up for this, Les. I
- 43:42want my wife back.
- 44:10Please just tell me what to do.
- 44:13Just tell me what to do.
- 44:23Good morning. Did you sleep good last
- 44:25night? You have sweet dreams.
- 44:26>> Mhm.
- 44:27>> Good.
- 44:39>> Stro ball rolling in at the crack of
- 44:41noon.
- 44:42>> Just trying to get to the bottom of this
- 44:43cop shooting chief.
- 44:45>> Mhm. By reading Voltater. Can't wait to
- 44:48see how that's going to play in.
- 44:50>> That's for something different. How long
- 44:51till I'm reading copy?
- 44:52>> I'm trying. Okay. There's a big story
- 44:55here. I feel it.
- 44:56>> Yeah. I need to feel it right here.
- 44:58>> I know that and I'm going to do my best
- 44:59to make that happen. All right. Oh,
- 45:02excuse me.
- 45:04>> Legal affairs desk
- 45:06>> speaking.
- 45:07>> Yeah, this is Bill Craig.
- 45:09>> I'm sorry, who?
- 45:10>> Bill Craig.
- 45:12>> Dr. Craig, thank you for returning my
- 45:14call. I appreciate that.
- 45:15>> Yeah, I'm sorry for the delay. I'm I'm
- 45:17calling from Jerusalem. I have to give a
- 45:19lecture any minute. I just I didn't want
- 45:20to keep you waiting.
- 45:21>> I'll cut right to the chase.
- 45:23>> So, I've been doing research into the
- 45:24purported resurrection of Jesus, and I
- 45:26want to run a theory by you. Maybe the
- 45:28reason
- 45:28>> that the tomb was empty was because
- 45:30Jesus's body was never there in the
- 45:32first place.
- 45:32>> Because we know that the Romans used to
- 45:34throw the bodies of of uh crucifixion
- 45:36subjects to the dogs, right?
- 45:38>> Well, there's no evidence for that, but
- 45:40there are specific records that didn't
- 45:42happen to Jesus.
- 45:43>> And what records are those? Well,
- 45:45actually, the earliest recorded accounts
- 45:46tell us that Jesus was properly buried
- 45:48in the tomb. And the Romans did allow
- 45:50for burial of some crucifixion victims.
- 45:53>> But then there's something that still
- 45:54doesn't add up to me about all these
- 45:56supposed eyewitnesses that claimed to
- 45:58have found Jesus's empty tomb.
- 45:59>> What? The fact that they were all women.
- 46:01>> Yeah, because because we know that
- 46:03according to Jewish customs, women were
- 46:05deemed to be unreliable witnesses. Am I
- 46:07right?
- 46:07>> Well, true. So why did all four gospel
- 46:10writers record that it was women who
- 46:12discovered the empty tomb? It's I'm
- 46:14asking you that.
- 46:15>> Well, if you were a first century Jew
- 46:16making up this story out of thin air,
- 46:18then you would never say that women
- 46:19discovered the tomb.
- 46:21>> It would damage your case, not help.
- 46:22>> Okay. So, maybe we're dealing with the
- 46:24world's most inep disciples.
- 46:25>> Or maybe the disciples reported what
- 46:27actually happened and let the chips fall
- 46:29where they may.
- 46:30>> Okay. All right. But you you you have to
- 46:32admit here that there is a there is a
- 46:33gaping hole in all this.
- 46:35>> A gaping hole.
- 46:36>> That the fact that the gospels are
- 46:38filled with contradictions about the
- 46:40empty tomb. Okay. If I turned in a story
- 46:42that was this jumbled, I'd be out of a
- 46:44job. If we look through the Gospels, you
- 46:46started started Matthew. Okay? Matthew
- 46:50puts Mary Magdalene and some other Mary
- 46:52at the tomb. You flip over to Mark, he
- 46:55adds Solomon. You go to Luke, he adds
- 46:58Mary, mother of James, and then some
- 46:59lady named Joanna. What? What is that?
- 47:01You need a sharper guide to sort your
- 47:02way through this.
- 47:03>> Sure, [snorts] there are differences,
- 47:04but that doesn't trouble most
- 47:05historians.
- 47:06>> Why? Why doesn't that troubles me, it
- 47:08should trouble them? Because the core of
- 47:10the story is the same in all four. After
- 47:13Jesus is placed in the tomb, it's
- 47:15visited on Sunday morning by a small
- 47:17group of women and they find the body is
- 47:19gone.
- 47:19>> Now, you've studied law.
- 47:21>> Yeah. Law. Yes.
- 47:22>> Then you know that when policemen
- 47:23question several witnesses at a crime
- 47:25scene, they never expect the secondary
- 47:28details to be consistent as long as the
- 47:29core account is the same. In fact, if
- 47:32they're [music] too similar, it's
- 47:33suspect.
- 47:34>> That's true.
- 47:35>> Well, that's exactly what we're talking
- 47:36about here. The empty tomb is based on
- 47:39evidence. And isn't evidence your trade?
- 47:41>> It is. Yes. But what if what if
- 47:43>> the resurrection is one of the
- 47:44historical details that was recorded
- 47:46incorrectly? How can we know? How can we
- 47:48ever know?
- 47:49>> Lee, let me ask you something. Do you
- 47:52really want to know the truth or is your
- 47:54mind already made up regardless of the
- 47:56facts?
- 47:57>> Oh, look, doc.
- 47:58>> I'm a journalist, okay? It's my job to
- 48:00challenge assumptions until they're
- 48:02proven otherwise. That's all I'm doing.
- 48:03>> No, I get that. But when is enough
- 48:06evidence enough evidence?
- 48:11>> He is so frustrating. I'm just not good
- 48:13at this, I guess. I just I want to share
- 48:17it with him. I want to celebrate it. And
- 48:19I'm walking on eggshells in my own home.
- 48:22>> It's probably the same for him. He's
- 48:24walking on eggshells, too. So, give
- 48:26yourself a break.
- 48:27>> But the more I try to reach him, the
- 48:29more he pulls away.
- 48:30>> Okay. So, how did you reach him before?
- 48:35Well, we'd talk.
- 48:39>> We'd really talk and listen and listen.
- 48:45>> Do that.
- 48:48>> Easier said than done. [laughter]
- 49:07Kablinski.
- 49:12You got to be kidding me.
- 49:16>> Says here that Kolinsky was Hicks's
- 49:18arresting officer six times. Obviously,
- 49:21these guys knew each other. In fact,
- 49:22when I interviewed Hicks, he slipped up.
- 49:24He called Kublinsky by his first name.
- 49:26>> So, what's your theory?
- 49:28>> My theory is that is an informant for
- 49:30the gang task force and Kabinsky is his
- 49:33handler which means a gang member just
- 49:35shot his own handler and for some reason
- 49:37Chicago PD is covering it up. PD's
- 49:39protecting this guy. He's a cop shooter.
- 49:44>> I can't run that unless you get me a
- 49:46source inside the PD.
- 49:49Someone to confirm Hicks is an
- 49:51informant.
- 49:52>> Well, I need a little help.
- 49:59Dinner and drinks only.
- 50:01>> Well, drinks at least.
- 50:03>> Bring me back a receipt and don't close
- 50:05the
- 50:07>> What do you want from me, Stro? It's an
- 50:09open showc case. That's all I know.
- 50:11>> So, you're you're on the gang squad.
- 50:13That's all you know. You got to give me
- 50:15something.
- 50:23Can I get you dinner? Would you like
- 50:24steak? Here's
- 50:28my theory. Kablinsk's on your team and
- 50:31Hicks is your informant.
- 50:35>> You think that uh you take down a big
- 50:37car company that there's a conspiracy?
- 50:40>> Come a you know that I'm right.
- 50:42Kablinsky is a hero. Okay. No one's
- 50:44taking that away from him. But his own
- 50:46snitch shoots him and your bosses don't
- 50:48want to get out.
- 50:49>> That doesn't look good for your new
- 50:51department. Politics or whatever. I get
- 50:53it. Want to know what I hear?
- 50:55I hear they're going to knock Hicks's
- 50:57time down to petty time in county.
- 50:59They're going to put him back on the
- 51:00streets. They're offering Hicks a plea
- 51:02to keep his mouth shut. Now, you don't
- 51:03want that. Now, all I need to run this
- 51:06story is one source from the squad. That
- 51:10way, everybody knows Hicks is a story.
- 51:12He goes away for a long time and boom,
- 51:15your task force is free of cop shooters.
- 51:18I'm not going to quote you. I'm not
- 51:19going to use your name. You don't have
- 51:20to go on the record. Nothing. How about
- 51:22this? If I'm even in the right ballpark,
- 51:26you leave the tip. You drop a couple
- 51:28bucks on the table, get up, you walk out
- 51:29of here. I know that I'm safe to run my
- 51:32story.
- 51:36>> I'll do you one better.
- 51:38I'll pay for the meal. It's crap.
- 51:40Anyways,
- 51:52now how confident are you on this?
- 51:55>> Very.
- 51:59>> Okay,
- 52:01get it to the copy desk. Front page.
- 52:03Green streak edition.
- 52:06And don't
- 52:25Lee,
- 52:34>> I made you coffee.
- 52:39Shut up and take the coffee.
- 52:53>> I wanted to ask you a favor.
- 52:56I had to take the kids to church.
- 53:01Come with us.
- 53:03>> Why would I do that? because I asked you
- 53:06to nicely and
- 53:11because even though you think I've lost
- 53:13my mind, you'd still do anything to make
- 53:15me happy.
- 53:20>> I'm still going to bring my notebook
- 53:23in case I cover church scandal
- 53:27something.
- 53:27>> Deal.
- 53:29Ready to go.
- 53:32>> 15 minutes.
- 53:42All right.
- 53:47You put this love in my heart. You put
- 53:49this in my heart.
- 53:54[applause]
- 53:57[cheering]
- 53:59>> Some of you have had bad experiences in
- 54:01church before, and I get that. Churches
- 54:04aren't perfect. Pastors aren't perfect.
- 54:06I know I'm not.
- 54:08>> But that's not God. That's people. God
- 54:11wants to be your father to love you
- 54:14until you know his promise of heaven.
- 54:17Because this is the simple truth of our
- 54:18faith. God made us. We mess things up.
- 54:23Christ paid for our mess. And all we
- 54:25have to do is receive him. It really is
- 54:28as simple as that.
- 54:31Lee.
- 54:32>> Hey, good to see you, Alfie.
- 54:34>> Good to see you. I see you brought the
- 54:37baby.
- 54:37>> Yeah. Yeah, he's good, huh?
- 54:39>> Hey, uh, can I talk to you for a minute?
- 54:42>> Sure. Sure.
- 54:43>> Yeah. I I just wanted to say that that
- 54:45we are grateful uh for what you did with
- 54:47Allison and and we owe you and and I I
- 54:52don't mean that lightly, but now this
- 54:55whole thing with Lesie,
- 54:58it needs to stop.
- 55:01I don't understand.
- 55:02>> You're putting ideas in her head. You're
- 55:04drawing her into Yeah. this and and I
- 55:07know how this works. I know you folks
- 55:08have a mandate, okay? You need to raise
- 55:10money. You need to get the good news out
- 55:12and all that. I'm just letting you know
- 55:16that you're going to need to find
- 55:17someone else to recruit.
- 55:19>> Lee, your wife is not brainwashed. She's
- 55:22seeking God. And I'm just trying to
- 55:24help.
- 55:25>> She is vulnerable
- 55:27and you are taking advant She's my wife.
- 55:30This is our life. And I want you to stay
- 55:33out. Now, is that clear?
- 55:38>> All right. Come on. Let's go.
- 55:41>> Okay.
- 55:41>> Alison,
- 55:42>> come on, sweetie.
- 55:44>> Bye.
- 56:19Dad
- 56:21is
- 56:23sweetheart.
- 56:25>> Hi
- 56:30handsome he is
- 56:34angel.
- 56:39>> [crying]
- 56:42>> You know what?
- 56:49>> I love his name. What's his middle name?
- 56:52>> Christopher. Kyle. Christopher.
- 56:55>> You didn't use John in his name.
- 56:57>> Well,
- 56:58Kyle Christopher is a beautiful name.
- 57:00It's a beautiful name, but John has been
- 57:02in the Strobble line for generations.
- 57:04>> There you go. Because I didn't want to
- 57:06name my son John. Okay.
- 57:08>> Your grandpa's John. So's your older
- 57:10brother.
- 57:11>> Mhm. It's also the euphemism for a
- 57:12toilet and the client of a prostitute.
- 57:14>> Lee,
- 57:16really?
- 57:19>> Sorry I brought it up. Why you guys came
- 57:22anyway? Nobody invited you.
- 57:31Get some air.
- 57:35>> Leslie, it was lovely to see you.
- 57:38>> Thanks for coming.
- 57:47>> Was that really necessary?
- 57:50>> I learned from the best of a mom.
- 57:52>> Oh, I just wish the two of you could
- 57:54learn to understand each other.
- 57:55>> You know what? I wish a a lot of things.
- 57:58Hey, what do you want from me? Look, the
- 58:00guy never cared about me my whole life.
- 58:02Now suddenly I got kids and he wants to
- 58:03be best friends. No, it's too late.
- 58:08Honey, I'm going to go do some work.
- 58:41I'm sorry. I know it's always hard with
- 58:43him.
- 58:47That could never happen to us.
- 59:00Ray, I'm telling you, I've checked it
- 59:01out. I've interviewed a dozen
- 59:03historians, philosophers,
- 59:05archaeologists. There's all these
- 59:06accounts of actual eyewitnesses which
- 59:08corroborate each other. People with zero
- 59:10motivation to lie. In fact, they should
- 59:12have lied. Some of them ended up dying
- 59:13for their beliefs.
- 59:19I'm losing my mind, right?
- 59:24I wake up every morning and uh I think
- 59:28to myself, maybe today's the day. Maybe
- 59:30maybe today she'll come to her senses.
- 59:34And she doesn't, you know, just gets
- 59:36worse.
- 59:39Thing of it is, she's different.
- 59:43She's actually different. Yeah. That's
- 59:46what scares the heck out of me.
- 59:51Just miss my wife.
- 59:56I wish I could be of more help to you.
- 1:00:06Just remember,
- 1:00:10Leslie knows full well that you don't
- 1:00:12approve of all this,
- 1:00:15but she is still your wife
- 1:00:19and you love her very much.
- 1:00:27Just make sure she knows that, too.
- 1:00:47Where are we?
- 1:00:51>> Just
- 1:00:53enjoying the quiet. Baby's still
- 1:00:55sleeping.
- 1:01:04Okay.
- 1:01:06>> Yeah.
- 1:01:09Just feeling grateful
- 1:01:14for you
- 1:01:16for us.
- 1:01:18>> Yeah. Me, too.
- 1:01:23>> What would you say if we
- 1:01:27went out tonight? grab some dinner,
- 1:01:30maybe uh a little dancing, but just you
- 1:01:33and me, no kids.
- 1:01:36That' be crazy.
- 1:01:38>> A little bit.
- 1:01:40>> Yeah, a little bit.
- 1:01:44Let's do it.
- 1:01:46>> Yeah.
- 1:01:50>> I want to take care of us.
- 1:01:59You and only you.
- 1:02:11>> Mr. Hicks, do you understand the felony
- 1:02:13charges that have been filed against
- 1:02:15you?
- 1:02:16>> Yes, sir.
- 1:02:18>> How do you plead?
- 1:02:21>> Guilty, sir.
- 1:02:24This is not the first time I've seen you
- 1:02:26in my courtroom, son. I know you thought
- 1:02:28you'd be walking away today with a slap
- 1:02:30on the wrist, but with recent
- 1:02:32information that's come out in the
- 1:02:33press, well, today you're going to get
- 1:02:35some hard time. At my discretion, I'm
- 1:02:38sentencing you to a minimum of 15 years
- 1:02:40at the Joliet State Prison. Baleiff,
- 1:02:44take him away.
- 1:02:46>> Mr. Hicks,
- 1:02:48guilty, huh?
- 1:02:49We all guilty of something reporter, but
- 1:02:51I ain't guilty of this.
- 1:02:53>> Okay, so then why not maintain your
- 1:02:54innocence? Why top a plea?
- 1:02:56>> Your story didn't give me no choice, did
- 1:02:58it?
- 1:02:59>> Did your story give me a choice?
- 1:03:09>> Excuse me.
- 1:03:20Dubo,
- 1:03:21>> he fled out, chief.
- 1:03:23>> 15 years.
- 1:03:24>> I guess your theory panned out, huh?
- 1:03:26>> Yeah.
- 1:03:27>> Yeah. I wouldn't want to be Hicks,
- 1:03:28though. The guy's now
- 1:03:29>> cop shooter and a gang informant. That's
- 1:03:31going to be one tough stretch.
- 1:03:32>> Yep.
- 1:03:33>> 10 for page one.
- 1:03:34>> Yeah. Heading back to you. All right.
- 1:03:49I was just thinking
- 1:03:57I miss you.
- 1:04:06I'm right here.
- 1:04:14I wish I could make it more
- 1:04:16understandable what I'm going through.
- 1:04:21I feel like I'm on this journey to the
- 1:04:24most amazing place I've ever been and I
- 1:04:26can't take you. I I I can't even I don't
- 1:04:30know how to tell you about it. I'm
- 1:04:32sorry.
- 1:04:54Look, Les, I
- 1:04:56I understand
- 1:04:58that all this feels good right now. I
- 1:05:00mean, I went to church. I I heard the
- 1:05:03music.
- 1:05:06I get that you want this to be true,
- 1:05:09but what if it's not?
- 1:05:12Wouldn't you want to know that before
- 1:05:13you've dedicated your entire life to it?
- 1:05:17Of course.
- 1:05:21But what if it is?
- 1:05:25What if it is true? Wouldn't you want to
- 1:05:27know that?
- 1:05:36There's a verse that says
- 1:05:40faith is the evidence of things we can't
- 1:05:42actually see.
- 1:05:45You believe what you can see and touch
- 1:05:48and feel. And I feel this. I can see it.
- 1:05:53I I know it.
- 1:05:54>> You You can't.
- 1:05:56>> But I
- 1:05:57I do. It's the the same way I know I
- 1:06:01love you.
- 1:06:02>> Yeah, but that's that's different, Les.
- 1:06:03I'm real. I'm I'm I'm a person. We we
- 1:06:06have a relationship.
- 1:06:13I know I've been fighting and
- 1:06:17it's been weird lately, but
- 1:06:21I I love you more now than I ever have.
- 1:06:27>> Based on what?
- 1:06:35Honestly, [music] since I accepted
- 1:06:37Jesus,
- 1:06:39my love for you has only it's only grown
- 1:06:45and it's only deepened.
- 1:06:48And if that's [music] not proof of
- 1:06:50something, I don't know what is.
- 1:06:52>> No, that's not proof of anything, Les.
- 1:06:54That's feelings. It's not proof. And my
- 1:06:57feelings are a valid experience that I
- 1:07:01>> they're real to me.
- 1:07:03>> I I I I don't like
- 1:07:08>> this version
- 1:07:10of us. I don't I don't like what you're
- 1:07:12becoming.
- 1:07:17And if I'm looking ahead
- 1:07:20and we're still having this conversation
- 1:07:22five years from now,
- 1:07:25we're having this conversation two years
- 1:07:27from now.
- 1:07:30I don't want to be there for that.
- 1:07:34Okay? I won't be
- 1:07:53I'm going to check on the kids.
- 1:08:04>> We can sit here for a minute.
- 1:08:06>> Okay. Thank you.
- 1:08:08I'll be I'm losing I'm losing hope for
- 1:08:10Lee. I'm losing hope for my marriage.
- 1:08:12>> Oh, come now. It's going to be okay.
- 1:08:14You'll be all right.
- 1:08:16>> No, I don't know what to do.
- 1:08:17>> All right. Okay. I know that it's scary.
- 1:08:20I do. Trust me. I've been there.
- 1:08:24But I can promise you this in his time
- 1:08:28and in his way. God always keeps his
- 1:08:32promises. And what did he promise
- 1:08:35Ezekiel?
- 1:08:37I will give you a new heart.
- 1:08:40I will put a new spirit in you. I will
- 1:08:44remove from you your heart of stone and
- 1:08:47[music] give you a heart of flesh. Now
- 1:08:51that's a truth you already know.
- 1:08:56But it's the same truth for Lee.
- 1:09:00You just got to be patient.
- 1:09:01>> Okay.
- 1:09:03Thank you.
- 1:09:04>> Thank you.
- 1:09:07I promise.
- 1:09:09I promise I'm praying for both of you.
- 1:09:20>> Hey, just because they said they saw
- 1:09:22Jesus doesn't mean they actually did.
- 1:09:25>> I'm sorry. Was that for me?
- 1:09:26>> Maybe the eyewitnesses of the
- 1:09:28resurrection, maybe they're delusional.
- 1:09:29You know what I mean? Maybe they only
- 1:09:31thought they saw Jesus. Or maybe it was
- 1:09:32like mind control or brainwashing. hot.
- 1:09:36>> You need to see a psychologist.
- 1:09:37>> Oh, you think I got a screw loose?
- 1:09:39>> Yeah, well, that's another story. But if
- 1:09:41you're talking about first century mass
- 1:09:43psychosis, you need to talk to a
- 1:09:45psychologist.
- 1:09:45>> I'm already ahead of you, Rod.
- 1:09:48>> Hey, I need you to find me a good
- 1:09:50psychologist to interview.
- 1:09:51>> A psych?
- 1:09:52>> A psychologist? That's right. A guy with
- 1:09:53with a lot of academic street cred knows
- 1:09:56the human mind better than God does.
- 1:09:58>> No pressure, kid.
- 1:09:59>> Don't listen to him.
- 1:10:03>> Dr. Robera Waters, president of the
- 1:10:05American Association of Psychoanalysts,
- 1:10:08agnostic.
- 1:10:09>> Ah, agnostic. Why don't
- 1:10:11>> and a leading authority on human
- 1:10:12behavior at Purdue University,
- 1:10:14>> Indiana. Great.
- 1:10:19>> Dr. Waters.
- 1:10:21>> Ah, hello, Mrs.
- 1:10:24As much as I would like to help a fellow
- 1:10:26skeptic, what you're proposing is
- 1:10:29completely impossible.
- 1:10:31>> But how can you say that? I mean, if
- 1:10:33Charles Manson can turn his followers
- 1:10:35into murderous zombies, surely the
- 1:10:38followers of the Christ cult could be
- 1:10:39convinced of their own delusions.
- 1:10:41>> Listen, hallucinations are like dreams.
- 1:10:44They happen in individual minds. They
- 1:10:46don't spread like the common cold.
- 1:10:48>> Okay. So, a hypnotist turns stage full
- 1:10:52of insurance salesmen into into clucking
- 1:10:54chickens. Then that's that's not really
- 1:10:56happening or
- 1:10:57>> No, of course it is. The power of
- 1:11:00suggestion can be very profound, but
- 1:11:02it's one thing to be mesmerized into
- 1:11:05making animal noises. It's quite another
- 1:11:08for 500 people to have the same dream.
- 1:11:12To be honest, that would be an even
- 1:11:13bigger miracle than the resurrection
- 1:11:15itself.
- 1:11:17>> And without an empty tomb,
- 1:11:20you and I, we're not even having this
- 1:11:22conversation. If Jesus recovered from
- 1:11:24his injuries, that solves that problem.
- 1:11:27All these people could have easily seen
- 1:11:29him. Yes.
- 1:11:30>> Yes. But I'm afraid that's not a brain
- 1:11:32issue. You need to speak to a medical
- 1:11:35doctor.
- 1:11:36>> Of course,
- 1:11:39>> Dr. Waters, again, thank you for your
- 1:11:41time. You've been most gracious.
- 1:11:45>> Before you go, may I ask you something?
- 1:11:49>> Sure.
- 1:11:50>> It's about your father.
- 1:11:53I'm just curious what your relationship
- 1:11:55with him is like.
- 1:11:59Um,
- 1:12:03complicated.
- 1:12:04>> Let me guess. Distant, cold, doesn't
- 1:12:08give much affirmation or express love.
- 1:12:12>> Guilty on all charges. Why?
- 1:12:15>> I imagine as a skeptic, you're familiar
- 1:12:17with history's great names in atheism.
- 1:12:20Hume, Nichi, Sartra, Freud.
- 1:12:23>> Of course. Yes. Some of my greatest
- 1:12:24heroes. Did you know that all of them
- 1:12:27had a father who either died when they
- 1:12:29were young, abandoned them, or was
- 1:12:32physically or emotionally abusive? In
- 1:12:34the world of therapy, it's called a
- 1:12:36father ward.
- 1:12:39>> No, I I was not aware of that.
- 1:12:43>> But with all due respect, Dr. Waters, I
- 1:12:45did not have a loving father. But that
- 1:12:47doesn't mean that I have a problem with
- 1:12:48those who do. What I have a problem with
- 1:12:51is some madeup loving father. If God was
- 1:12:54real,
- 1:12:56I could accept that he loves me.
- 1:13:00I just don't believe he is.
- 1:13:03>> I don't disagree.
- 1:13:05>> Well, unfortunately,
- 1:13:07my wife does. The problems that it's
- 1:13:10currently causing my marriage are very
- 1:13:12real.
- 1:13:14Again, thank you.
- 1:13:21>> I will give you heart and put a new
- 1:13:23spirit in you.
- 1:13:26I will remove from you your heart of
- 1:13:27stone
- 1:13:29and give you a heart of flesh.
- 1:13:34I will give you a new heart,
- 1:13:37put a new spirit in you. I will remove
- 1:13:40from you your heart
- 1:13:43and give you heart of flesh.
- 1:14:09interview
- 1:14:18California
- 1:14:20in Wisconsin.
- 1:14:23>> Mr. Trouble.
- 1:14:24>> Yeah. You have a visitor.
- 1:14:26Hey, Officer Kinsky. How you feeling?
- 1:14:30>> Getting there.
- 1:14:31>> Good. Thanks, Rod.
- 1:14:33>> Just wanted to come by and uh, you know,
- 1:14:35say thanks for the story,
- 1:14:37>> for telling the truth.
- 1:14:38>> Meanwhile, it's my job and uh, in this
- 1:14:41case, my pleasure.
- 1:14:43>> So, you got everything you need on
- 1:14:44Hicks, wrapping the story up.
- 1:14:48>> Yeah. No, that's that's all done. Uh,
- 1:14:51don't have to worry about him shooting
- 1:14:52anyone for another 15 years.
- 1:14:56Still have bullet fragments in my
- 1:14:57spleen.
- 1:14:58>> Oh, right. I forgot. Yeah. Price for
- 1:15:00doing my job, I guess. Right.
- 1:15:05>> Thanks again,
- 1:15:06>> Feel better.
- 1:16:05Not sure why you want to do this now.
- 1:16:06Nick's already been sentenced.
- 1:16:08>> Just humor me, Marlo.
- 1:16:11Here's what's weird. He's got bullet
- 1:16:15fragments in his spleen, but the entry
- 1:16:18wound is up here. It's as if it's as if
- 1:16:21the weapon barrel was pointing inside
- 1:16:23the breast pocket.
- 1:16:24>> See the powder burns right there.
- 1:16:25>> Now, a couple years back, I was doing
- 1:16:28research on concealed weapons. People
- 1:16:30disguising firearms as cigarette
- 1:16:32lighters, belt buckles.
- 1:16:34>> That's a pen. It's a writing utensil.
- 1:16:38Is it
- 1:16:47what is that?
- 1:16:48>> It's been showcasing.
- 1:16:51That Mr. Marlo
- 1:16:54is a gun. That is a a 22 caliber
- 1:16:59handgun. Look at that right there.
- 1:17:02That's what shot Kobinsky.
- 1:17:03>> This is illegal. Any cop to carry a
- 1:17:05weapon like this while on duty. How
- 1:17:08could nobody have seen this?
- 1:17:09>> Nobody was looking for it. Kablinsky had
- 1:17:11a secret. He played the victim card and
- 1:17:13I bought it.
- 1:17:14>> Well, so did the cops.
- 1:17:17Unbelievable. He's actually innocent.
- 1:17:20>> He's wrongfully prosecuted is what he
- 1:17:22is. You got to get back to that judge.
- 1:17:23You got to get Hicks out of lock.
- 1:17:24>> Can you get this stuff?
- 1:17:26>> I got it. I got it. Just you going.
- 1:17:30>> How could you miss this?
- 1:17:32>> Kablinsky played me. No, you let
- 1:17:35yourself get played, Mr. Bestseller, and
- 1:17:38you put the integrity of this paper at
- 1:17:40risk, not to mention putting an innocent
- 1:17:43man in harm's way. Whatever's been
- 1:17:46distracting you lately, it got in the
- 1:17:48way of your reporting.
- 1:17:50Now, go write me trash. I got to call
- 1:17:53downstairs and have them hold the
- 1:17:55presses so we can remake A1.
- 1:17:58>> Yes, sir.
- 1:18:00After
- 1:18:03this, um, I'd like to take a few
- 1:18:06personal days if I could.
- 1:18:07>> Take more than that.
- 1:18:12>> Production,
- 1:18:19today is very much like a wedding. By
- 1:18:22taking the step of baptism, you are
- 1:18:24publicly proclaiming you are a follower
- 1:18:27of Jesus. If you believe he is your
- 1:18:29savior, died for yourself.
- 1:18:34Is it your desire to make that public by
- 1:18:38being baptized?
- 1:18:40>> Yes. Yes, it is.
- 1:18:44It is my privilege baptiz.
- 1:19:34Thank God.
- 1:19:37>> Where were you?
- 1:19:40>> I was just out celebrating
- 1:19:42on my own.
- 1:19:43>> Okay.
- 1:19:44>> And then I remember that I need to go to
- 1:19:46Los Angeles tomorrow, so I have to pack.
- 1:19:47>> No. No. No. No. Los Angeles. No, no.
- 1:19:49What happened today? You left. You left.
- 1:19:52What happened?
- 1:19:53>> Well, I didn't want to I didn't want to
- 1:19:55interrupt the wedding festivities. It's
- 1:19:57That's a big deal. Congrats.
- 1:19:59>> It's a metaphor.
- 1:20:00>> Uh-huh.
- 1:20:01>> You know what a metaphor is, right?
- 1:20:02You're a smart guy. Lee, right?
- 1:20:03>> Hey, come here. Come here. Listen to me.
- 1:20:06Today was important to me. You know
- 1:20:08that. I don't understand how you can
- 1:20:10>> two of us, Lesie.
- 1:20:11>> Lee, I'm trying here.
- 1:20:13>> I know you're trying. I know you're
- 1:20:15trying. I can feel you trying. behind
- 1:20:19closed doors every day hoping and
- 1:20:22praying that you can fix me up so I'm
- 1:20:24good enough for the almighty. Is that
- 1:20:26what you want?
- 1:20:26>> You need to leave.
- 1:20:27>> You need to sleep it off. Sleep it off
- 1:20:29MY OWN HOUSE.
- 1:20:30>> THIS IS MY HOUSE. I'M NOT GOING TO
- 1:20:31LEAVE. IT'S MY HOUSE.
- 1:20:33>> MY FAMILY.
- 1:20:34>> DADDY, STOP BEING MEAN to mom.
- 1:20:36>> ALISON, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO GET
- 1:20:38UPSTAIRS NOW?
- 1:20:39>> GO.
- 1:20:41>> You just go to California. Just go.
- 1:20:44>> YOU AND ONLY YOU, HUN. RIGHT.
- 1:20:53You and you
- 1:20:58better
- 1:21:21Daddy. Sorry.
- 1:21:26Daddy. Sorry. Scary.
- 1:22:22Father.
- 1:22:25Give me a new heart. Put a new spirit in
- 1:22:28him.
- 1:22:29Remove from him his heart of stone and
- 1:22:31give him a heart of flesh.
- 1:22:49So, forgive me for making you travel all
- 1:22:51the way out here, but when someone rings
- 1:22:53me up and says he wants to dispute the
- 1:22:56most significant event in human history,
- 1:22:58I feel it's important that we do it face
- 1:23:00to face. Don't you?
- 1:23:01>> Yeah, that's fine. I uh I I appreciate
- 1:23:03your time. So, my line of attack is
- 1:23:07this. The reason the eyewitnesses were
- 1:23:09able to see Jesus after Galatha is
- 1:23:12because he never died on the cross.
- 1:23:14>> Because if he doesn't die, there's no
- 1:23:16resurrection. Yes.
- 1:23:17>> That's right. So, so whether or not
- 1:23:19Jesus himself or uh or someone else took
- 1:23:22him off of the cross early or if he
- 1:23:23fakes his own death, it doesn't matter.
- 1:23:25It completely discounts every aspect of
- 1:23:27the resurrection.
- 1:23:28>> Right. The sworn theory.
- 1:23:29>> Yeah. But he passed out. He didn't die.
- 1:23:31>> I'm afraid there's a long line of
- 1:23:32skeptics in front of you with that
- 1:23:34hypothesis.
- 1:23:35including only a billion Muslims the
- 1:23:37world over who also don't believe that
- 1:23:39Jesus died on the cross because the
- 1:23:40Quran says so.
- 1:23:41>> With all due respect to Islam, the Quran
- 1:23:44was written six centuries after Christ.
- 1:23:46I prefer my historical sources a bit
- 1:23:48closer to
- 1:23:49>> understand. But but you can see that
- 1:23:50it's possible.
- 1:23:52>> Mr. Stro, I am a medical doctor and
- 1:23:56scientist. I have seen a great many
- 1:23:58strange phenomena in my lifetime.
- 1:24:00>> But this one theory is rubbish.
- 1:24:03[laughter]
- 1:24:04rubbish. That's a Is that a a medical
- 1:24:06opinion?
- 1:24:08>> It is actually. Um theorists tend to
- 1:24:12skim over the fact that Jesus was
- 1:24:14flogged prior to his crucifixion. Do you
- 1:24:18know what happens in a Roman flogging?
- 1:24:20>> Um yeah, the person is lashed with a
- 1:24:23whip.
- 1:24:24>> No, not lashed.
- 1:24:26Scorged and pummeled savagely. You see
- 1:24:30the the gallide whip is braided with
- 1:24:32metal balls and bone fragments. The
- 1:24:35flesh on Jesus's back would have been
- 1:24:36shredded. The very muscles and sen
- 1:24:39themselves laid open to exposure. The
- 1:24:42flogging itself would have left Jesus in
- 1:24:45critical condition from [music] massive
- 1:24:46blood loss, which is why he collapsed on
- 1:24:49the way to the cross of the Romans made
- 1:24:51him carry through town.
- 1:24:53>> Okay. So, is it possible that Jesus
- 1:24:56survives being spiked to the cross?
- 1:24:58>> Yes. could survive it, but it's child's
- 1:25:01play compared to what comes next in a
- 1:25:03crucifixion.
- 1:25:05Slow, agonizing death by asphixxiation.
- 1:25:09Come with me.
- 1:25:14The stress on Jesus's chest muscles
- 1:25:16would have locked his lungs into the
- 1:25:18inhale position. So in order to let the
- 1:25:21breath out, he would have had to shove
- 1:25:23himself up using his spiked wrists and
- 1:25:26feet, scraping [music] his shredded back
- 1:25:29against the wood of the cross and then
- 1:25:31sagged back down again in order to draw
- 1:25:33his next breath, which he would have had
- 1:25:35to have done over and over and over
- 1:25:37again until utter exhaustion just made
- 1:25:40it impossible. And then inevitably
- 1:25:44>> he dies uh in in theory. But let's let's
- 1:25:47remember these soldiers, they're not
- 1:25:48doctors, okay? So maybe
- 1:25:51maybe they took him off the cross and
- 1:25:53they they thought he was dead, but in
- 1:25:54fact he wasn't. Of course, they weren't
- 1:25:57medical doctors. They were professional
- 1:25:58killers, right? And they were quite good
- 1:26:00at their jobs. They had to be. If a
- 1:26:02prisoner escaped alive, they themselves
- 1:26:05would be executed.
- 1:26:07Mr. The crucifixion of Jesus is one of
- 1:26:10the best attested events in the ancient
- 1:26:12world. And if you will, the final nail
- 1:26:16in the coffin, at least one theory, is
- 1:26:19this. When the soldiers thrust their
- 1:26:21spear between Jesus's ribs, do you know
- 1:26:23what came out? Blood [music] and water,
- 1:26:26which we now know is a description of
- 1:26:27paricardial eusion as a result of depth
- 1:26:30by esphyxiation. This is not a condition
- 1:26:32anyone could fake. And so to answer your
- 1:26:35question, yes, it is my medical opinion
- 1:26:39that Jesus Christ died on that cross.
- 1:26:41>> Excuse me, doctor.
- 1:26:45But but but I got I have a real problem
- 1:26:48with most of the experts that I've
- 1:26:49talked to here,
- 1:26:51>> which is
- 1:26:53>> which is that most of them are not
- 1:26:54impartial. And if I'm going to take a
- 1:26:56guess, I would say that you are not
- 1:26:58either.
- 1:26:58>> And you would be correct, sir. Though I
- 1:27:01have learned that most impartial
- 1:27:03travelers who undertake this journey
- 1:27:06rarely remain so. However, I can refer
- 1:27:09you to one of the most impartial sources
- 1:27:11that I know. You trust the Journal of
- 1:27:14the American Medical Association.
- 1:27:18>> Of course, it is a stellar scientific
- 1:27:21journal. You and I will admit that
- 1:27:25on the physical death of Jesus,
- 1:27:27>> clearly the weight of the medical and
- 1:27:30historical evidence indicates that Jesus
- 1:27:32was dead before the wound to his side
- 1:27:36was inflicted. Accordingly,
- 1:27:38interpretations [music] based on the
- 1:27:39assumption that Jesus did not die on the
- 1:27:42cross appear to be at odds
- 1:27:45with modern medical knowledge.
- 1:27:50Doc, I got to tell you, you're uh you're
- 1:27:54not telling me what I hope to hear
- 1:27:55today.
- 1:28:08>> Lee.
- 1:28:08>> Hey, it's me. Everything all right? Kids
- 1:28:11okay?
- 1:28:12>> Sweetheart,
- 1:28:15>> it's your father.
- 1:28:28He watches over
- 1:28:39your shade.
- 1:28:49Watch over
- 1:28:51your
- 1:28:58father.
- 1:30:27Do you know we have this?
- 1:30:31Yes.
- 1:30:45Now your father,
- 1:30:48he was proud of everything you ever
- 1:30:50accomplished.
- 1:30:53Look, he didn't know how to say it very
- 1:30:54well. But he loved you, son.
- 1:30:59He really
- 1:31:01loved you.
- 1:32:05nations.
- 1:32:07>> I'm going camping and I'm bringing an
- 1:32:10apple,
- 1:32:12>> a banana,
- 1:32:14and chinchilla.
- 1:32:23>> Okay.
- 1:32:26>> James was savagely beaten in a prison
- 1:32:28fight in Cook County Jail today.
- 1:32:30>> Sources inside the prison say Hicks was
- 1:32:32targeted by gang members as a result of
- 1:32:34recent news identifying him as a police
- 1:32:37informant. It is believed that the
- 1:32:39prison guards did little to protect
- 1:32:40Hicks, a fate not uncommon for cop
- 1:32:43shooters. Hicks was immediately taken to
- 1:32:45Mercy Hospital where he's in serious
- 1:32:47condition. Elsewhere in Chicago, the
- 1:32:50wind is expected to kick up this
- 1:32:52evening.
- 1:33:22How's How's he doing?
- 1:33:25In and out.
- 1:33:27Mostly out.
- 1:33:41Mr. Hicks.
- 1:33:44Mr. Hicks. It's Lee Stroble.
- 1:33:55Just wanted to say that
- 1:34:01that's my fault.
- 1:34:05[snorts]
- 1:34:06I
- 1:34:09I I missed the the truth.
- 1:34:14I'm sorry. I just I I didn't see it.
- 1:34:27You didn't want to see it.
- 1:34:38>> I've hit a brick wall. I have read
- 1:34:40through every book you've given me. I've
- 1:34:41gone through every argument. I've
- 1:34:43followed every lead. At some point,
- 1:34:45young man, you're going to have to plant
- 1:34:47your flag on a mountain of uncertainty
- 1:34:49where not every question is answered.
- 1:34:51The human mind will never get to the
- 1:34:53bottom of every mystery in the cosmos.
- 1:34:57Believing in God, not believing in God,
- 1:35:00either way, still takes a leap of faith.
- 1:35:04So, you're saying
- 1:35:07even in our disbelief
- 1:35:10that we still take a leap of faith,
- 1:35:13>> more or less?
- 1:35:16Me? Well, I've come to my own
- 1:35:18conclusion.
- 1:35:20You're going to have to do the same
- 1:35:22thing for yourself.
- 1:35:36What are you doing here? I thought you
- 1:35:38were banished.
- 1:35:44Hey,
- 1:35:46what's the matter?
- 1:35:50you people and your God. You just, you
- 1:35:52know, you talk in circles. You offer,
- 1:35:54you offer just enough evidence, but
- 1:35:56never enough to be conclusive. Then you
- 1:35:59fill in all the gaps with, "Oh, well,
- 1:36:00yeah, you just got to have faith. It's a
- 1:36:02bunch of nonsense."
- 1:36:06>> You're really irritating. You know that.
- 1:36:09>> Don't start with me, Kenny.
- 1:36:11>> You don't waste a lick of time bragging
- 1:36:14to all of us how great a reporter you
- 1:36:16are. So, why can't you put up or shut up
- 1:36:18on this story? What are you even talking
- 1:36:20about?
- 1:36:21>> Here's where the chili meets the cheese,
- 1:36:22my friend. One of my heroes was CS
- 1:36:26Lewis, a man who began as a skeptic,
- 1:36:27much like yourself. At the end of his
- 1:36:30journey, you know what he said? He said,
- 1:36:32"If Christianity is false, it's of zero
- 1:36:35importance.
- 1:36:37But if it's true,
- 1:36:39there's nothing more important in the
- 1:36:41entire universe."
- 1:36:44So, you want your wife back? Well, hey,
- 1:36:45guess what? People in hell want ice
- 1:36:47water. Not everybody gets everything
- 1:36:48they want.
- 1:36:52Stop blaming me and the church and God
- 1:36:54and do your job.
- 1:36:57Stack up the evidence, follow the facts,
- 1:36:59and write the story. Win or lose.
- 1:37:22Father, please please soften Lee's
- 1:37:25heart. Put a new spirit in him. Remove
- 1:37:29from him his heart of stone and give him
- 1:37:30a heart of flesh.
- 1:37:44>> [music]
- 1:37:47>> The only way to truth is through facts.
- 1:37:50>> The entire Christian faith hinges on the
- 1:37:52resurrection of Jesus if it didn't
- 1:37:53happen as a house of cards.
- 1:37:54>> I just have to show that Jesus died and
- 1:37:57was seen after.
- 1:37:57>> How can we be sure of the reliability of
- 1:38:00those manuscripts?
- 1:38:00>> Archaeologists have recovered 5,843
- 1:38:03Greek New Testament manuscripts. Nothing
- 1:38:05[music] else in history even comes
- 1:38:07close.
- 1:38:08>> You trust the Journal of the American
- 1:38:09Medical Association?
- 1:38:10>> Yes. Jesus Christ died on that cross.
- 1:38:12>> Yeah. Tell me what I hope to hear today.
- 1:38:14>> If it is true, wouldn't you want to know
- 1:38:16that?
- 1:38:16>> The first recorded Cal tells us that he
- 1:38:18was buried in a tomb. The empty tomb is
- 1:38:20based on [music] evidence. Isn't
- 1:38:21evidence your trade?
- 1:38:22>> Fate is the evidence of things we can't
- 1:38:24actually see.
- 1:38:25>> Any careful historian will see that the
- 1:38:27core account is consistent, even if a
- 1:38:29few of the secondary details are told
- 1:38:31from different perspectives.
- 1:38:33>> 500 separate people saw Jesus [music] at
- 1:38:35the same time. That would be an even
- 1:38:37bigger miracle than the resurrection
- 1:38:39itself.
- 1:38:39>> The disciples reported what?
- 1:38:41>> Zero motivation to lie.
- 1:38:43>> When is enough absence and enough?
- 1:38:45>> I felt something that is maybe more real
- 1:38:47than anything I've ever felt in my life.
- 1:38:48>> This is not the condition. Still takes a
- 1:38:51leap of faith.
- 1:38:56>> But why would he do it?
- 1:38:58It's really very simple.
- 1:39:02Love.
- 1:39:37All right, God.
- 1:39:47You win.
- 1:40:02Hey,
- 1:40:06>> are you okay?
- 1:40:08>> Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. How's he doing?
- 1:40:13>> Good.
- 1:40:15>> Come over here. I talk to you for a
- 1:40:16second.
- 1:40:20Are you are you sure you're okay?
- 1:40:27>> So, I have not been um
- 1:40:31completely honest with you over the last
- 1:40:34few months.
- 1:40:36>> That's a really scary way to start the
- 1:40:38conversation.
- 1:40:39>> Just just hang with me here, okay?
- 1:40:43When you became a Christian,
- 1:40:46I freaked out. I
- 1:40:48Yeah, I was scared. Um,
- 1:40:53and I felt like that I needed to uh to
- 1:40:57save you.
- 1:41:02And so I decided to set out to prove
- 1:41:04this was all a big comm.
- 1:41:07And so that's what I've been doing all
- 1:41:09this time.
- 1:41:11>> Your research?
- 1:41:12>> Yeah. I mean, look at this. It's This is
- 1:41:15all [snorts]
- 1:41:17all that stuff.
- 1:41:20That's why I've been so distracted. It's
- 1:41:22why I went to California. I just had to
- 1:41:25prove this whole thing wrong.
- 1:41:30But I couldn't.
- 1:41:34The evidence for your faith,
- 1:41:39it's more overwhelming than I could have
- 1:41:40ever imagined.
- 1:41:47But it wasn't just the evidence, okay?
- 1:41:53It was you.
- 1:41:56You never stopped loving me.
- 1:41:59You never gave up on me.
- 1:42:03And I think because of that,
- 1:42:06God didn't either.
- 1:42:14What? I mean, I don't I don't think God
- 1:42:17gave up on you either, but what what are
- 1:42:20[laughter] you saying?
- 1:42:32I believe.
- 1:42:38[snorts]
- 1:42:48>> Okay, let me show you something.
- 1:42:54[snorts]
- 1:42:57But as many as received him, to them he
- 1:43:01gave the right to become children of
- 1:43:03God,
- 1:43:06to those who believe in his name.
- 1:43:09And what does that mean?
- 1:43:13>> [snorts]
- 1:43:13>> means
- 1:43:17believe
- 1:43:20plus receive
- 1:43:23equals become.
- 1:43:30Okay.
- 1:43:32So then how do I how do I receive what
- 1:43:35do I what's what's the protocol for for
- 1:43:38that? There's no wrong way or right way.
- 1:43:41Just you you talk to God.
- 1:43:45>> You tell him your heart.
- 1:43:51>> And we do that right now. Church
- 1:43:56>> right here. Right now. This is church.
- 1:44:15>> [snorts]
- 1:44:19>> God,
- 1:44:28I have
- 1:44:30no idea what I'm doing. [snorts]
- 1:44:39But I cannot ignore the evidence.
- 1:44:43And I don't know everything.
- 1:44:46I I
- 1:44:48never will [music] know everything,
- 1:44:53but I
- 1:44:56I know enough
- 1:44:59and I believe it.
- 1:45:02I'm sorry for what I've
- 1:45:06put my wife through,
- 1:45:08what I put my family through,
- 1:45:13but I believe you're real.
- 1:45:15And I don't know what comes next. I
- 1:45:18don't know.
- 1:45:20I don't know what it means. I just know
- 1:45:22[music] that I want I want that. I want
- 1:45:25I want whatever's next.
- 1:45:29So, let's do that.
- 1:45:46I guess I'm crazy, too.
- 1:46:00Don't blow it.
- 1:46:02>> Watch this.
- 1:46:06>> I got a pitch for you.
- 1:46:10>> Oh, that didn't last long.
- 1:46:12>> Piece of junk. You hear about Hicks?
- 1:46:15Released from the hospital. No longer a
- 1:46:17resident of Crook County Jail.
- 1:46:19>> I did. That's great news.
- 1:46:28Come on. This is a joke.
- 1:46:29>> No, no, it's not. I I I I want to do a
- 1:46:32first person feature story. Okay. An
- 1:46:35odyssey.
- 1:46:37One man's journey from skepticism to
- 1:46:40faith.
- 1:46:40>> Forget it, Lee. I mean, good for you, I
- 1:46:44guess. But we can't publish something
- 1:46:46like this. We'd lose all credibility. So
- 1:46:50would you.
- 1:46:50>> I really wish that you would reconsider.
- 1:46:52>> Stick to what you know, Lee. Go on now.
- 1:46:55Get out of here.
- 1:46:55>> Not until you've at least heard me out.
- 1:47:00>> Hey, you. How are you?
- 1:47:03>> Hi.
- 1:47:05>> So,
- 1:47:10no.
- 1:47:11>> You good?
- 1:47:14>> Sorry. H
- 1:47:16>> What did you did?
- 1:47:18Finally, the closet. I'm tall enough.
- 1:47:23>> You You're a big girl now. Oh, no. You
- 1:47:26need to stop that. That means you're
- 1:47:27growing up. You're not a little girl
- 1:47:29anymore.
- 1:47:30>> It's not that big of a deal.
- 1:47:33>> I think it's a big deal.
- 1:47:36>> Hey, how about a book?
- 1:47:38A what? Instead of an article, how about
- 1:47:41a book?
- 1:47:44>> What do you think about that?
- 1:47:45>> Yeah.
- 1:47:46>> Yeah.
- 1:49:17cuz I [singing] have seen
- 1:49:21Heaven's doors open to me.
- 1:49:29I have shook to the bones
- 1:49:32and I have seen your [singing and music]
