  1. 0:01Let's talk about
  2. 0:03how the smallest decisions
  3. 0:06we make in our lives can turn
  4. 0:08our entire existence upside down.
  5. 0:11In 1961,
  6. 0:13a major global discovery was made.
  7. 0:16It was a process that occurred
  8. 0:18during a weather forecast. The person
  9. 0:20who discovered it was Edward Lorenz.
  10. 0:23This individual was entering data into a computer
  11. 0:26to make a weather prediction.
  12. 0:29While entering the data,
  13. 0:31this person,
  14. 0:33compared to the first time, rounded off the values
  15. 0:35like 0.506127 to the nearest value
  16. 0:39of 0.506 for the second entry.
  17. 0:42He entered the data with that slight reduction.
  18. 0:47After entering the data, instead of the heavy rain
  19. 0:51that was expected as a result,
  20. 0:54what actually appeared
  21. 0:56was a massive storm.
  22. 0:58After observing how the result changed completely,
  23. 1:01he stated that a butterfly flapping its wings
  24. 1:04in Brazil, South America,
  25. 1:07could cause a massive storm
  26. 1:09in Texas, North America, two weeks later.
  27. 1:11That wind is the cause.
  28. 1:14This is known as the "Butterfly Effect."
  29. 1:17The message this gives us is that
  30. 1:19a very small change at the beginning
  31. 1:22can result in a massive change at the end.
  32. 1:25If we look at how this impact relates to our mind,
  33. 1:28Buddhism contains the "Patthana Prakarana."
  34. 1:31Within this, a very similar doctrine
  35. 1:33is explained beautifully. When a thought
  36. 1:36arises in our mind, it doesn't happen
  37. 1:39as a single isolated thought, but as a chain of thoughts.
  38. 1:42As you know, in a "Chitta Vithi" (thought process),
  39. 1:45seven "Javana" thoughts occur.
  40. 1:47Through these seven Javana thoughts,
  41. 1:50the first creates the second, the second adds more data
  42. 1:52to create the third, then the fourth,
  43. 1:53and so on. By the seventh,
  44. 1:56it is not the same as the first.
  45. 1:58The first gives energy to the second.
  46. 2:00In Abhidhamma, this is called "Asevana Pratyaya."
  47. 2:03The first energy or thought in your mind
  48. 2:04energizes the second. The second energizes the third,
  49. 2:07just like a chain reaction.
  50. 2:08The Patthana teachings also mention
  51. 2:11"Anantara" and "Samanantara" relations.
  52. 2:14Even a tiny decimal of change in your mind—
  53. 2:16for example, if a small unwholesome root
  54. 2:18like greed, hatred, or delusion arises—
  55. 2:20it is enough to corrupt the entire consciousness.
  56. 2:24It is said to be powerful enough
  57. 2:26to cause a massive "Samsaric" storm in the end.
  58. 2:28Furthermore, your thoughts don't belong only to you.
  59. 2:30Researchers at Harvard University discovered
  60. 2:33that they can affect someone you haven't even met.
  61. 2:37This is called "Emotional Contagion."
  62. 2:39They say that if you are unhappy,
  63. 2:42the chance of your friend being happy
  64. 2:44decreases by over 15%.
  65. 2:48Not only that, your friend's friend's chance
  66. 2:51of being happy decreases by 10%.
  67. 2:53And your friend's friend's friend's chance
  68. 2:56decreases by 6%.
  69. 2:57This is mentioned in Abhidhamma
  70. 3:02through relations like "Annamanna Pratyaya."
  71. 3:04Therefore, we must understand that nothing
  72. 3:06in this universe arises in isolation.
  73. 3:09One single bad thought you have
  74. 3:12has the potential to negatively affect the entire cosmic web.
  75. 3:15If we view this as a cosmic web...
  76. 3:18Many people think Karma is a simple thing,
  77. 3:20like "an eye for an eye."
  78. 3:22But that is incorrect. Karma is a seed.
  79. 3:24The Buddha mentions in the Samyutta Nikaya
  80. 3:26that from a tiny seed like a mustard seed,
  81. 3:28a massive Banyan tree that covers the sky can grow.
  82. 3:32The Tripitaka tells the story of a young woman named Vajira.
  83. 3:36It mentions how she teased a Pacceka Buddha
  84. 3:38by saying his teeth were ugly.
  85. 3:40That was all she did. It was unintentional;
  86. 3:43she just had the thought that his teeth were ugly.
  87. 3:46A very small starting point.
  88. 3:48But the Patthana mentions "Nanakshanika Kamma Pratyaya."
  89. 3:51According to that, that energy developed over time,
  90. 3:54and in a future life, she received a beautiful set of teeth.
  91. 3:59It is said they were like diamonds.
  92. 4:03But what happened on the other side?
  93. 4:05She lived her whole life like a beggar in the gutters
  94. 4:08and died there. The Buddha said,
  95. 4:10"Ma mannetha papassa na manthan agamissathi."
  96. 4:13Which means, do not underestimate sin, thinking it is small.
  97. 4:16Think of the universe as a bank
  98. 4:17that gives massive compound interest
  99. 4:20even on the tiny things you deposit.
  100. 4:23Even for small things. It works both ways.
  101. 4:26Sociology introduces the "Broken Windows Theory."
  102. 4:28It states that if one broken window in a building
  103. 4:30isn't fixed, the whole area
  104. 4:33will soon become a high-crime zone.
  105. 4:36There's a window; a thief learns to break in.
  106. 4:38Other thieves follow. They break windows that weren't broken.
  107. 4:43Our mind is like that. A small bit of laziness
  108. 4:45or a little jealousy in your mind can be like
  109. 4:48the first broken window that invites crime into the whole area.
  110. 4:50Therefore, that broken window—the small jealousy,
  111. 4:53drowsiness, laziness, or "Thina-Middha" (sloth)—
  112. 4:55you must use "Samma Vayama" (Right Effort) to repair it.
  113. 4:57If not, through "Upanissaya Pratyaya,"
  114. 5:03your whole life and Samsara will be destroyed.
  115. 5:05As I said, there is another side to this.
  116. 5:08Take Emperor Ashoka as an example.
  117. 5:10In a past life, he offered a handful of sand to a Buddha,
  118. 5:12saying, "I only have sand, please accept this as rice."
  119. 5:15The intention of giving was there.
  120. 5:17That intention became powerful through "Adhipati Pratyaya."
  121. 5:21Because of those grains of sand, he gained the power
  122. 5:24to rule all of India as an Emperor.
  123. 5:27So you must understand that like a butterfly's stroke,
  124. 5:30a small merit can change your entire world.
  125. 5:33We cannot change the past now.
  126. 5:36The butterflies of the past have already flapped their wings.
  127. 5:37Could the mistakes of the past still lead to storms? Yes.
  128. 5:39But the value of Patthana Dhamma
  129. 5:41is teaching us that by changing a decimal of your thought
  130. 5:42in this very moment, you can change your entire future.
  131. 5:45Therefore, that one second of patience when you are angry
  132. 5:47can lead to complete well-being in the future.
  133. 5:48These are called "Upaghathaka Kamma"—
  134. 5:50actions that cut off and remove large karmas.
  135. 5:53You must remember that if there is a control room
  136. 5:55for this universe, you are the person in that control room.
  137. 5:57Whether you flap the butterfly wings of your mind
  138. 6:01to create storms in your future
  139. 6:02or a beautiful spring is a decision that rests with you.
  140. 6:03You have the ability to do it.
  141. 6:05It is your decision. Therefore, living wisely
  142. 6:09is what we all must do. Otherwise, unknowingly,
  143. 6:11we will fall into a massive bonfire.
  144. 6:15May the Triple Gem bless you all.
