- 0:04Once upon a time in Poland, there was a
- 0:08boy named Carol. Carol was a kind boy,
- 0:12loved by all, who enjoyed playing sports
- 0:16and took his studies very seriously. He
- 0:20also knew how to enjoy life.
- 0:24He lived with his mom, dad, and older
- 0:27brother. Although his family was not
- 0:30rich and didn't have much, their house
- 0:33was filled with great love and joy.
- 0:38Carol loved being with his mom. In her
- 0:41arms, he learned to pray and love God.
- 0:45Every night before going to sleep, she
- 0:48would hug him, tell him she loved him,
- 0:52and remind him that his life was a gift
- 0:55from God. When she was pregnant with
- 0:57him, doctors advised her to have an
- 1:01abortion due to possible complications.
- 1:06But she chose life.
- 1:10Carol always knew that his mother's love
- 1:13and courage had given him the chance to
- 1:16live. The knowledge of this would
- 1:20ultimately inspire him all throughout
- 1:23his life. However, when Carol was only 9
- 1:27years old, he faced a heartbreaking
- 1:30loss, the death of his mother.
- 1:35Even though the pain was immense, this
- 1:37moment marked the beginning of his
- 1:40journey of deep faith.
- 1:44Each night before bed, Carol would hug a
- 1:47picture of his mother and remember the
- 1:50prayers they said together.
- 1:53He would particularly ponder the phrase
- 1:55she always repeated to him. Carol, the
- 1:59greatest thing you have in life is the
- 2:03love of God.
- 2:06When World War II broke out and the
- 2:08Nazis invaded Poland, things became even
- 2:12more difficult. Despite the threats many
- 2:15Catholics and others faced from the
- 2:18cruel Nazis,
- 2:21[Music]
- 2:22Carol was completely certain of one
- 2:25thing. He wanted to become a priest.
- 2:34During the war, studying was outlawed by
- 2:37the German army. So, Carol and other
- 2:40brave young men studied in a secret
- 2:43seminary.
- 2:45There were nights when they were nearly
- 2:47discovered by the police.
- 2:50However, through the fear and anxiety,
- 2:54Carol trusted God would protect them. At
- 2:58just 22 years old, Carol was ordained a
- 3:01priest.
- 3:03From then on, he began teaching young
- 3:06people about God's love.
- 3:09His words were simple but powerful,
- 3:12touching the hearts of everyone around
- 3:15him.
- 3:17When he was 58 years old, something
- 3:20incredible happened.
- 3:22Carol was elected pope and took the name
- 3:26John Paul II.
- 3:30The world was amazed. He was the first
- 3:34Polish pope in history and the first
- 3:37nonItalian pope in over 450
- 3:41years.
- 3:43From day one, he did things differently.
- 3:47Unlike his predecessors, Pope John Paul
- 3:50II would draw near to the people to
- 3:53greet,
- 3:54hug, and bless children and those in
- 3:57need.
- 4:02He was never afraid to approach others
- 4:04and always showed love, joy, and
- 4:08kindness.
- 4:11One of the most profound moments of his
- 4:13life happened in 1981
- 4:16when a man tried to assassinate him.
- 4:22After he recovered, he visited the man
- 4:25in prison, hugged him tightly, and
- 4:29forgave him for trying to kill him. With
- 4:32this act, he showed the world that
- 4:34forgiveness is the true path to peace.
- 4:41St. John Paul II always taught that
- 4:44holiness is not just for a few.
- 4:47He told young people,
- 4:50"Do not be afraid to be the saints of
- 4:53the new millennium."
- 4:56He showed us that true greatness isn't
- 4:59found in how much we do for ourselves,
- 5:02but rather how much we do out of love
- 5:05for others.
- 5:08St. John Paul II died in 2005.
- 5:12But his example of love, courage, and
- 5:15faith, he taught us that no matter how
- 5:18hard life gets, we can follow Jesus with
- 5:22a sincere heart.
- 5:25We too can become saints just like he
- 5:28did.
