  1. 0:00So as most of you are aware one of the
  2. 0:02projects that I'm doing is about the s
  3. 0:04of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
  4. 0:06wasallam examining the s from multiple
  5. 0:08angles and uh one of the projects which
  6. 0:12is a summary today inshallah I'm going
  7. 0:13to be doing that looking at the s and
  8. 0:17extracting from it the teaching
  9. 0:20mechanism of the prophet sallallahu
  10. 0:22alaihi wasallam how did he effectively
  11. 0:24teach what are the pedagogical tools
  12. 0:28like if you look at the s of prophet you
  13. 0:30can extract everything from it right so
  14. 0:33let's look at it from the lens
  15. 0:35of mud teacher what are the effective
  16. 0:40techniques that we can see that he
  17. 0:42employed and when you do this one thing
  18. 0:45you will find is that subhan allah all
  19. 0:48of this that you extract modern
  20. 0:51pedagogical tools are mentioning the
  21. 0:53same things as effective teaching
  22. 0:56mechanisms for students so this is a one
  23. 0:59of the projects I'm doing. So a summary
  24. 1:01today inshallah of that project and
  25. 1:03obviously the goal today. So what my
  26. 1:05goal is to give you maybe 10 15 however
  27. 1:07much time presents specific scenarios of
  28. 1:11how the prophetam taught and then give
  29. 1:13one example because we don't have time
  30. 1:15for lots of examples and then contrast
  31. 1:17this or not contrast but explain the
  32. 1:20same idea is used by modern PhDs in
  33. 1:24education modern you know professors who
  34. 1:27teach you how to teach right the
  35. 1:30teaching tools we
  36. 1:32find understandably we don't to say this
  37. 1:35that he sallallahu alaihi wasallam is
  38. 1:37the ideal role model in all of these
  39. 1:39fields. So in no particular order and as
  40. 1:42many of you aware I'm writing multiple
  41. 1:43books. So one of the books I'm writing
  42. 1:45in is just being published now.
  43. 1:46Leadership from the s leadership from
  44. 1:49the what does the s teach us about
  45. 1:51leadership right? Another book I'm
  46. 1:53writing is undergoing trials from the s.
  47. 1:56So what does the s teach us about trials
  48. 1:58tragedy grief tribulation? This is
  49. 2:00another project. These are all you know
  50. 2:02projects on my computer. One day
  51. 2:04inshallah it'll see the light of day. So
  52. 2:06this is the project is pedagogical tools
  53. 2:09from the how was the prophet the best
  54. 2:13teacher. So let's begin in no particular
  55. 2:15order. The first of
  56. 2:17them many times the prophet sallallahu
  57. 2:19alaihi wasallam would begin a lecture
  58. 2:22with a question or begin an information
  59. 2:24with a question. So instead of just
  60. 2:27handing the information, you begin with
  61. 2:31a question. And by the way, this is well
  62. 2:34known in pedagogical teaching
  63. 2:36mechanisms. This is called the Socratic
  64. 2:38method.
  65. 2:39Socrates, he was famous for this. But
  66. 2:42our prophet didn't need to study
  67. 2:44Socrates. This is something that he did
  68. 2:46because it is the effective mechanism.
  69. 2:48You begin with a powerful question. The
  70. 2:51question causes you to think and then
  71. 2:54while you're thinking then the process
  72. 2:55will give you the right answer and when
  73. 2:57you get the right answer you will
  74. 2:58remember it for the rest of your life
  75. 3:00but in the process your brain was forced
  76. 3:02to think and again many examples again
  77. 3:04today's lecture we're only going to give
  78. 3:06one or two examples we don't have time
  79. 3:07for the examples the goal is the
  80. 3:09template of the examples actually I
  81. 3:11should quiz you let me quiz you let me
  82. 3:14follow this right here let me see do you
  83. 3:15have an example in mind when he began an
  84. 3:18information by not handing it but by
  85. 3:20asking the question. He begins the
  86. 3:23hadith with with the
  87. 3:26question. Excellent. Excellent example.
  88. 3:29The prophet asked the question who is
  89. 3:31the bankrupt person. And everybody
  90. 3:35thought bankruptcy with the banks,
  91. 3:38bankruptcy with ma money, bankruptcy
  92. 3:41with declaring default. And then the
  93. 3:43prophetam said no no the real bankrupt
  94. 3:46person, the one who comes on the day of
  95. 3:47judgment. And then he hadith goes on,
  96. 3:49right? He has good deeds like mountains.
  97. 3:55But he did so much and all of his good
  98. 3:59deeds will be given until he's left with
  99. 4:01nothing. That is the bankrupt person.
  100. 4:03Now you tell me if you had been in that
  101. 4:05audience. How how can you forget this
  102. 4:08ever? The impact right of this teaching
  103. 4:10mechanism. And this is the same thing as
  104. 4:12the Socratic method. You tease the
  105. 4:14answer via question back and forth,
  106. 4:17right? And this is the uh uh modern
  107. 4:19educational equivalent of it is also
  108. 4:21called guided inquiry. Guided inquiry
  109. 4:24series of questions until you get to the
  110. 4:26answer that you want. Another teaching
  111. 4:29mechanism is and this is very common.
  112. 4:31There's at least a dozen examples in the
  113. 4:34and other authentic books. Another very
  114. 4:36common technique is you begin the piece
  115. 4:39of information by an analogy by a
  116. 4:42metaphor. So again you begin with a
  117. 4:45completely different topic you start
  118. 4:47with an analogy you start with a
  119. 4:49metaphor and then from it you
  120. 4:51extrapolate the information that you
  121. 4:53need. So for example the prophet
  122. 4:55sallallah.aii alaihi wasallam said there
  123. 4:57is a tree who is that is equivalent in
  124. 5:01its efficiency to the Muslim the mmin
  125. 5:05what is that tree there's a tree that
  126. 5:08it's anology it's metaphorically it's
  127. 5:10like a mmin what is that tree so it is
  128. 5:13the date palm but again does none of the
  129. 5:15sahaba could answer none of the sahaba
  130. 5:17could answer and then the prophet
  131. 5:19explained another example that he gave
  132. 5:22for example is that that can you imagine
  133. 5:25If there was a river next to your house
  134. 5:28and you would just dip
  135. 5:31in regularly, would you have any dirt
  136. 5:35left on you? And that was the ideal
  137. 5:37house. This is like the luxury luxury
  138. 5:39house for the people of that time. The
  139. 5:42biggest luxury is running water. For us,
  140. 5:44this is even the lowest house has
  141. 5:46running water, right? How times have
  142. 5:48changed. For them to have a river right
  143. 5:50next to your house, this was the highest
  144. 5:52form of luxury. So he said can you
  145. 5:54imagine if you had that and you would
  146. 5:56just dip in to your you know river few
  147. 5:59times a day would you have any dirt left
  148. 6:02and everybody's like obviously the
  149. 6:04imagery is there in their heads who
  150. 6:06doesn't want such a house then the
  151. 6:07prophet is basically saying all of you
  152. 6:09have such a house because that river it
  153. 6:11is the daily salawat and if you pray
  154. 6:13five times a day you won't have a speck
  155. 6:15of dust left so again this is analogy
  156. 6:18this is uh uh giving a metaphor and then
  157. 6:20teaching from there another you know
  158. 6:23this is Again very common throughout the
  159. 6:24s and this is the way we all learn our
  160. 6:27facts and in fact the entirety of the s
  161. 6:30is an example of this and that is
  162. 6:32gradual learning or it is called
  163. 6:34scaffolded learning or it is called
  164. 6:36progressive disc disclosure. You teach
  165. 6:39the people a basic fact let it sit with
  166. 6:42them then you go higher let it with them
  167. 6:44then you go higher and this is the
  168. 6:46default of how every Islamic teacher
  169. 6:49should teach any person. You start with
  170. 6:51the basics and then you build up. And
  171. 6:53this is called scaffolded learning. And
  172. 6:55our entire western system is based upon
  173. 6:58this. Look at any science or even
  174. 7:00history or mathematics. What do you
  175. 7:02study? You know, in grade three of
  176. 7:04science, really basic stuff. Then in
  177. 7:06grade seven, a little bit more, then in
  178. 7:08high school, then in your biology class
  179. 7:11in university, you keep on going back to
  180. 7:13the same detail. But then you build and
  181. 7:15you build and you build. And of course
  182. 7:17the entirety of the s this is how the
  183. 7:19religion of Islam is you begin with
  184. 7:21small and then you work your way up
  185. 7:23until you have more and more and this is
  186. 7:25again well known that even when the
  187. 7:27prophet sent muad to Yemen he taught him
  188. 7:30this technique he said when you go to
  189. 7:32Yemen then begin with the basics teach
  190. 7:35them just to how to pray once they learn
  191. 7:38how to do this then go once they do this
  192. 7:40then go on and he gave them the tiered
  193. 7:43system of learning so again the notion
  194. 7:45of what is call scaffolded learning or
  195. 7:47gradual progression. This is a
  196. 7:49well-known technique and the prophet
  197. 7:51himself he he embodied this. Another
  198. 7:54example of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
  199. 7:56wasallam in teaching is to begin his
  200. 7:59lectures to begin his teaching with a
  201. 8:01story. A story and stories subhan Allah
  202. 8:05we never grow out of stories. You know
  203. 8:07it is in our nature we love a story. If
  204. 8:10you take any class on public speaking,
  205. 8:13if you listen to any lecture about
  206. 8:15public speaking, if you listen to any
  207. 8:17effective TED talk, it always begins
  208. 8:20with an anecdote, a story. Because it
  209. 8:22doesn't matter how old you are, how many
  210. 8:24white hairs we have, we are children at
  211. 8:26heart when it comes to stories. We all
  212. 8:28love a good story. And the prophet would
  213. 8:30many times begin a hadith that has a
  214. 8:33moral. The lesson is at the end, but the
  215. 8:36beginning is a story. Again, I can quiz
  216. 8:38you. Any example comes to mind of a
  217. 8:40hadith that has a lesson, teaching
  218. 8:43point, but it begins with a story.
  219. 8:45There's so many. The story
  220. 8:47of the three people, the three people in
  221. 8:50the in the cave that were blocked. Very
  222. 8:52good. The man killed the man who killed
  223. 8:5599. Excellent. So, all of these stories
  224. 8:57are there, right? So, there's so many
  225. 8:59stories that the prophetam said and of
  226. 9:01course, everybody's mesmerized. And at
  227. 9:03at the end you get the moral, the
  228. 9:05lesson, you get the anecdote, the fact
  229. 9:07that you need. You're never going to
  230. 9:09forget it because the story has driven
  231. 9:11that point home. This is a teaching
  232. 9:13mechanism we can use. And by the way,
  233. 9:15when we were kids, what did our parents
  234. 9:17do? Tell us some story. And then at the
  235. 9:19end of the story, the the kid who cried
  236. 9:20wolf, right? They tell us a story. Then
  237. 9:23at the end of the story is the lesson
  238. 9:25that you shouldn't do that as well. So
  239. 9:26this is a very well-known technique and
  240. 9:29of course the prophetam is mastering it.
  241. 9:32Another mechanism of teaching is
  242. 9:35practical
  243. 9:39demonstration. He was sitting with in
  244. 9:41the time of his sitting with a group of
  245. 9:43people. He said bring water for me. So
  246. 9:45they brought water for him. He sat down
  247. 9:48and he started doing wudoo and he did
  248. 9:50wudoo perfectly and then he said this
  249. 9:53wudoo that I have done the prophetam
  250. 9:56demonstrated it for me. He showed me how
  251. 9:59to do it. Right? And the hadith is well
  252. 10:00not I don't have time to get there but
  253. 10:02the to go into the details but this is
  254. 10:04the most famous about
  255. 10:08where practically demonstrates how did
  256. 10:11he practically demonstrates because he
  257. 10:13said the prophetam practically
  258. 10:15demonstrated for me he literally sat
  259. 10:18down showed me bit by bit and of course
  260. 10:21this is uh education via demonstration
  261. 10:24this is handson learning which is of
  262. 10:27course you know that's how you learn
  263. 10:28your teacher does it And then you see
  264. 10:30how how the teacher does. So this is
  265. 10:32practical demonstration also. For
  266. 10:34example, the prophet would say pray as
  267. 10:37you have seen me pray. And he would say
  268. 10:39take from me how to do Hajj. Pray as
  269. 10:41you've seen me pray. Follow my Hajj. So
  270. 10:44he is doing it. And then he wants the
  271. 10:46Sahabah to observe and pay attention.
  272. 10:48This is also of the learning techniques
  273. 10:50of the teaching mechanisms of the
  274. 10:52prophet sallallah.aii wasallam. And
  275. 10:54again we find at least half a dozen such
  276. 10:56hadith is that he would use and this is
  277. 10:58very interesting very rare for that time
  278. 11:00frame visual aids and drawing. He would
  279. 11:04use visual aids and drawing. So for
  280. 11:07example multiple times he would take a
  281. 11:11stick and he would draw something in the
  282. 11:14sand and then he would begin his
  283. 11:16teaching from that drawing over there.
  284. 11:18So for example he said this is the life
  285. 11:21of man. and he said a straight line and
  286. 11:22then he pointed right he goes this is
  287. 11:25calling you here and there and he gave
  288. 11:26the whole hadith again I don't have time
  289. 11:28for the details I'm just telling you
  290. 11:30what he did that he's demonstrating this
  291. 11:32reality by a visual diagram and of
  292. 11:35course I mean modern teaching mechanisms
  293. 11:38PowerPoint and all of the visual tools
  294. 11:41you need some image so that the fact is
  295. 11:43in your head and the prophet multiple
  296. 11:46times he used that imagery in fact hand
  297. 11:49gestures while you're teaching this says
  298. 11:51again I I do this a lot by I I speak and
  299. 11:54done this with my tongue with my hands
  300. 11:55as well everywhere they're going
  301. 11:56everywhere at least I can say there is
  302. 11:58prophetic sunnah to do so so the prophet
  303. 12:00is giving the is in and he literally
  304. 12:03uses his hands to make the point he says
  305. 12:06the hadith is in he
  306. 12:10said he used his left hand whoever
  307. 12:13humbles himself he put himself down
  308. 12:15whoever humbles himself for Allah then
  309. 12:17he took his right hand Allah raises him
  310. 12:19up now you tell me if You saw the
  311. 12:21prophetam using his hands like this. How
  312. 12:24can you forget the imagery? How can you
  313. 12:26possibly forget? That's why when the
  314. 12:28sahabi is telling us, he literally says,
  315. 12:31I saw the prophet put his left hand
  316. 12:35down, then take his right
  317. 12:37hand. Look, he's using this is even
  318. 12:40imagery in the air, right? Hand gestures
  319. 12:43in the air to bring the point across so
  320. 12:45that you learn the lesson. Another uh
  321. 12:48teaching mechanism of the prophet and
  322. 12:50again this is the
  323. 12:51norm actually says this was his sunnah
  324. 12:54and that is repetition and this is well
  325. 12:57known repetition you hardly learn a fact
  326. 13:01the first time you hear it to hear it
  327. 13:03over and over and over our mother Aisha
  328. 13:05said the prophet would generally repeat
  329. 13:08himself three times and we learned this
  330. 13:10in so many traditions that the prophet
  331. 13:12would you know keep on saying the same
  332. 13:14thing over and over again. So for
  333. 13:17example another hadith in Bkari he said
  334. 13:19shouldn't I tell you the biggest sins
  335. 13:21they said yes he repeated the question
  336. 13:24shouldn't I tell you the biggest sins
  337. 13:25yes shouldn't I tell you the biggest
  338. 13:27sins yes why is he repeating you're not
  339. 13:29going to forget now so repetition and
  340. 13:32every teacher knows this you have to
  341. 13:34repeat so that your students understand
  342. 13:37another uh core of the prophet sallall
  343. 13:39alaihi wasallam's teaching mechanism is
  344. 13:42using emotional and physical cues now
  345. 13:45this is something that we have to be a
  346. 13:47bit careful in our modern world because
  347. 13:48of all of the controversies and issues.
  348. 13:51But if you're close to somebody like the
  349. 13:54real sheh figure, let's not talk about
  350. 13:56corrupt teachers that are evil, what
  351. 13:58not. The real sheh figure is not some
  352. 14:01distant disconnected person. He cares
  353. 14:04about you. And there is a physical
  354. 14:06interaction as well. There are so many
  355. 14:09instances in the s where the prophet
  356. 14:12physically held on to a person
  357. 14:14physically held on to his shoulders and
  358. 14:17he said that
  359. 14:21oh he held him by the shoulder. Can you
  360. 14:24imagine the prophet walks up to you he
  361. 14:26puts his hand on you how are you going
  362. 14:28to feel? How can you forget? And then he
  363. 14:31says be in this world as if you are a
  364. 14:33stranger or you're just passing by. So
  365. 14:36that physical that emotional involvement
  366. 14:39looking straight at you speaking to you
  367. 14:41in endearing terms another you can say
  368. 14:44this is a part of this tactic or another
  369. 14:46tactic but using names directly to your
  370. 14:50students how many times he would speak
  371. 14:52directly you know he would speak
  372. 14:55directly to his students for forming
  373. 14:57that one-on-one bond and connection with
  374. 14:59them and again how can you ever forget
  375. 15:02when the prophet is literally
  376. 15:04encouraging you're a student. So he says
  377. 15:07to he says, "What is the greatest verse
  378. 15:09in the Quran?" And says, "Yeah, I don't
  379. 15:13want to answer. Who who who am I that
  380. 15:15you ask?" No, no. Tell me. He literally
  381. 15:18forces it out of him. Tell me what is
  382. 15:20the greatest verse in the Quran. Then
  383. 15:26says, and then the prophetam again
  384. 15:29physically taps him on the shoulder and
  385. 15:31he says, "Knowledge has been made light
  386. 15:34and easy for you. Allah has blessed you
  387. 15:36with knowledge. Now how can Ubeay ever
  388. 15:38forget this fact right that the
  389. 15:40prophetam is literally you know bringing
  390. 15:42it out of him that one-on-one speaking
  391. 15:44to him and then you know another tactic
  392. 15:47you can say encouragement student
  393. 15:49encouragement right when the teacher
  394. 15:51encourages you when the teacher praises
  395. 15:54you I guarantee you every one of you one
  396. 15:57of your most vivid memories of your
  397. 15:59school will be a time when you raised
  398. 16:01the hand and you answered the question
  399. 16:02and the teacher praised you isn't that
  400. 16:04the case one of your most vivid Memories
  401. 16:06of your youth without a doubt will be
  402. 16:09something that the teacher praised you
  403. 16:11for when you were a child. This is human
  404. 16:13nature. You will remember it till you're
  405. 16:1580 years old. Why? Because
  406. 16:17psychologically that is now literally
  407. 16:20seared in your head. This is teaching
  408. 16:23mechanism of the prophet sallallah.aii
  409. 16:25wasallam. He literally is
  410. 16:28studententoriented interacting with the
  411. 16:30students one-on-one, praising them
  412. 16:32one-on-one. Another uh teaching
  413. 16:34mechanism of the prophet sallallahu
  414. 16:36alaihi wasallam is through context
  415. 16:39related real life situation looking at
  416. 16:42what's happening immediately assessing
  417. 16:45the situation and then using it to bring
  418. 16:48about something of benefit to teach
  419. 16:50something. So for example a famous
  420. 16:52hadith ink Muslim that somebody passed
  421. 16:55away they all walked to his lo and
  422. 16:57behold the grave has not yet been dug.
  423. 16:59So they all sat down. This hadith then
  424. 17:02the prophet began saying a hadith which
  425. 17:05is a page long and he described the
  426. 17:07journey of death and the journey of the
  427. 17:10soul. This hadith is considered to be
  428. 17:13the foundational text
  429. 17:16of when was it done situation.
  430. 17:20Everybody's waiting for the to be dug.
  431. 17:23Who can possibly forget? That's why this
  432. 17:25hadith is like a page long and it's full
  433. 17:28of detail because the mind is going to
  434. 17:30absorb all of this. How can you not when
  435. 17:33you're at the you're at the graveyard
  436. 17:35and the prophetam says when the and the
  437. 17:37hadith is famous when I did my barak
  438. 17:39series so many years ago that was the
  439. 17:41fundamental hadith that we base the
  440. 17:42entire you know so many lectures on that
  441. 17:45when the person is about to pass away
  442. 17:47the angel of death comes and hadith goes
  443. 17:49on and on when did he say this context
  444. 17:52everybody's waiting in the battlefield
  445. 17:54he passes by and he sees you know a
  446. 17:57mother screaming where's my baby where's
  447. 17:59my baby until when she finds the baby.
  448. 18:01She jumps for joy and she screams a
  449. 18:04shriek of joy and she jumps on the child
  450. 18:06and immediately the child is crying and
  451. 18:08she gives it milk and everybody's in
  452. 18:10awe. What a sight to see immediately.
  453. 18:12What does the prophetam say? He says,
  454. 18:14"Do you ever think this woman with her
  455. 18:16love for her child will harm the child,
  456. 18:19throw the child into a fire?" They said,
  457. 18:21"No way." Then he said, "So then know
  458. 18:24that Allah is more merciful to his
  459. 18:27creation, to his servants, than this
  460. 18:29woman is to her child." Contextbased,
  461. 18:32right? You take advantage of something
  462. 18:34that your memory, you're going to never
  463. 18:36forget that incident. You use it to
  464. 18:38teach something, to teach a life lesson.
  465. 18:41You're going to keep it until you pass
  466. 18:43away. So again, this is called
  467. 18:45contextbased learning or situated
  468. 18:47learning. And by the way, this is
  469. 18:49extremely common, especially in graduate
  470. 18:51level. They'll give you a scenario. You
  471. 18:53know, they're going to begin the class
  472. 18:54with an entire even medical school,
  473. 18:56right? Medical school, they give you an
  474. 18:58entire scenario and then you extrapolate
  475. 19:00from that. So, this is situationbased
  476. 19:02learning. Another technique of the
  477. 19:05prophet sallallahu alaihi
  478. 19:06wasallam light humor, little bit of
  479. 19:09laughing because again, go back to your
  480. 19:12middle school, high school. The teachers
  481. 19:14that had a little bit of humor were
  482. 19:16always your most favorite teachers. The
  483. 19:18teachers who brought some levity to the
  484. 19:20classroom. They made you smile. They
  485. 19:21made you laugh. Always your favorite
  486. 19:23teachers. And our prophet wasallam,
  487. 19:26believe it or not, he would crack jokes.
  488. 19:27Halal jokes. All of them halal. But he
  489. 19:30would say things that would make the
  490. 19:32people smile. And that memory and and
  491. 19:35never did he say something that was
  492. 19:37false. Cuz remember the prophet's quote
  493. 19:40unquote jokes, his humor was always what
  494. 19:43we would call linguistic puns. So
  495. 19:46because he cannot say uh something that
  496. 19:49is incorrect because of his high status
  497. 19:52we are yeah it's going to be allowed to
  498. 19:54because it's not so for example we will
  499. 19:55say oh there were three people in a
  500. 19:57plane you know this and this and this
  501. 19:59and then they had to jump out everybody
  502. 20:00knows it's a joke we start off like this
  503. 20:02you know oh and a lot of times we make
  504. 20:04fun of some nationalities you know
  505. 20:05Indian Pakistani this and we'll make a
  506. 20:07joke like this right obviously our
  507. 20:09prophet cannot do this obviously it's
  508. 20:11too high m obviously he cannot say
  509. 20:13something that is factually incorrect
  510. 20:15there were three people. No, everything
  511. 20:17he has to say has to be 100% correct. So
  512. 20:20his level of humor is very different
  513. 20:23than ours, right? And I have a whole
  514. 20:24lecture about the reality of humor in
  515. 20:26Islam and the conditions we have to have
  516. 20:28because even even if we don't have to be
  517. 20:30that high, we still have a bar we cannot
  518. 20:33go underneath. As for our prophet, he
  519. 20:35would always use linguistic, you know,
  520. 20:37double meanings that is factually
  521. 20:39correct, but the point is to be made.
  522. 20:41And there are many hadith like this of
  523. 20:42them. the famous one where the old lady
  524. 20:44comes right and says you know Allah you
  525. 20:48know I've done this and that and I make
  526. 20:50dua that Allah causes me to enter Jenna
  527. 20:52and the prophet said oh my oh my elderly
  528. 20:56auntie don't you know you know elderly
  529. 20:58aunties will never enter Jenna right
  530. 21:00they're not going to enter Jenna and
  531. 21:02she's like well she's like what how am I
  532. 21:04going to what happened this and that and
  533. 21:05of course then the prophet said don't
  534. 21:07worry Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will
  535. 21:09transform you until you will be at your
  536. 21:12prime time and your youngest and your
  537. 21:14most beautiful and healthy then Allah
  538. 21:16will cause you to enter Jenna right
  539. 21:18little bit of humor and subhan Allah how
  540. 21:22powerful the imagery how powerful the
  541. 21:24the happiness that would come so a
  542. 21:26little bit of humor when you teach this
  543. 21:28is something that and again there's a
  544. 21:30famous hadith I don't have time to get
  545. 21:32into all of the you know the
  546. 21:33technicalities I im he said I thought of
  547. 21:37this one hadith you know one night
  548. 21:39tossing and turning in bed I couldn't
  549. 21:40sleep the whole night I extracted ed
  550. 21:42over 100 benefits from this hadith and
  551. 21:44that is when the child lost its pet uh
  552. 21:47there was a child two and a half three
  553. 21:49four years old maybe right lost its pet
  554. 21:51pet bird and he was so sad and so the
  555. 21:54prophetam he would you know this is
  556. 21:56child coming and imagine in this whole
  557. 21:58audience right a child sitting in the
  558. 22:00back and the child is intimidated the
  559. 22:02prophet you know is very intimidated you
  560. 22:04understand and the prophetam sees the
  561. 22:07child crying right and so the prophet
  562. 22:10makes the child happy with a little
  563. 22:14right that the prophet cracked a joke at
  564. 22:17him again I don't have time to get into
  565. 22:18the the technicalities but it caused the
  566. 22:21child to feel special and to laugh and
  567. 22:24smile again little bit of humor to cheer
  568. 22:27him up and then you know to make him
  569. 22:29feel special so a little bit of
  570. 22:31happiness levity to make the person
  571. 22:34happy and then you know teach something
  572. 22:36this is also from the prophet sallallahu
  573. 22:38alaihi wasallam another uh Another uh
  574. 22:42mechanism of the prophet sallallahu
  575. 22:44alaihi wasallam is let's see time is
  576. 22:47coming up here. Um let us see here which
  577. 22:49one we going to do. Ah yes
  578. 22:51um differing
  579. 22:53between speaking to people so teaching
  580. 22:56people at the level they are used to and
  581. 22:59not becoming too advanced on them. So
  582. 23:01I'll give you two examples each one will
  583. 23:03contrast with the other. In other words,
  584. 23:05the teacher tailors the lecture or the
  585. 23:08the the benefit to the person directly.
  586. 23:11So for example, look at two incidents in
  587. 23:13the both of them mistakes or minor
  588. 23:16mistakes or big mistakes. How did the
  589. 23:18prophet react? The Beruin urinating in
  590. 23:21the
  591. 23:22masid
  592. 23:23versus Jabal reciting Bakar in or
  593. 23:29sorry Jabal
  594. 23:31recited Bakar or a long portion of Bakar
  595. 23:35ina and the Beruin urinated in the
  596. 23:38masjid. Two separate incidents. How did
  597. 23:40the prophet react in each one? Even
  598. 23:43though technically urinating in the
  599. 23:45masid is a much bigger deal. much bigger
  600. 23:49deal. But when the man the bedawin came
  601. 23:53in and he lifted his th and he sat down
  602. 23:56in the middle of everywhere and he just
  603. 23:58started urinating right and as you know
  604. 24:01what happened that the sahaba began
  605. 24:03throwing things at him telling what are
  606. 24:04you doing get out of here right and what
  607. 24:06are you going to do you began urination
  608. 24:08what are you going to do you cannot do
  609. 24:09anything the prophetam said let him be
  610. 24:11let him be don't don't interrupt him now
  611. 24:14as you know and then he called the man
  612. 24:17after he was done and he said oh so and
  613. 24:19so this is a house of Allah subhanahu wa
  614. 24:21ta'ala. It is not befitting that in the
  615. 24:24house of Allah we urinate or defecate
  616. 24:27and we honor and respect it. What did
  617. 24:29the man
  618. 24:33say? He didn't beat me. He didn't hit
  619. 24:36me. He didn't make me feel any
  620. 24:38humiliation. The man himself
  621. 24:42said, "I never saw a teacher better than
  622. 24:46the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam."
  623. 24:47This is the better. I never saw a
  624. 24:50teacher who taught me this lesson better
  625. 24:53than the prophet sallallahu alaihi
  626. 24:55wasallam. Look, you teach at that level.
  627. 24:57Now Jab the scholar of the Sahabah. The
  628. 25:01scholar of the Sahabah when he
  629. 25:04led as you know he recited he recited
  630. 25:08Bakar and a man just said Salam went
  631. 25:12prayed for and went back and then the
  632. 25:15next day he complained to the prophetam
  633. 25:16that Allah in my masjid he
  634. 25:20started withah we have to go to sleep we
  635. 25:24have to go to work the next day right so
  636. 25:26he called him and he was angry his
  637. 25:29eyebrows could tell was anger
  638. 25:33said are you making the religion
  639. 25:35difficult when you want to pray
  640. 25:40injite then you
  641. 25:42recite you recite with
  642. 25:46notice he didn't commit a sin but the
  643. 25:49prophet is visibly angry and the bedawin
  644. 25:53commits a sin and the prophet is smiling
  645. 25:56look at the difference why because you
  646. 25:59treat people as
  647. 26:02said speak to the people at their level
  648. 26:05and the prophet saidith is in beginning
  649. 26:07of Muslim that the prophet commanded us
  650. 26:11to deal with people at their
  651. 26:16level whatever is the of the person you
  652. 26:19deal with him at that so one of our
  653. 26:21problems and I'm saying this bluntly a
  654. 26:23lot of times when we preach when we
  655. 26:25teach we expect everybody to be like
  656. 26:28muad rather than the bedin
  657. 26:30And we make Islam super strict and
  658. 26:33tight. And when you're teaching the
  659. 26:37average person, you need to lower the
  660. 26:39bar as low as you can. I've said this
  661. 26:41multiple times. The general rule of
  662. 26:44scholars when they preach and teach,
  663. 26:46lower as much as you can. And in your
  664. 26:48private life, do as high as you want.
  665. 26:50When the bedin comes and says,
  666. 26:52"Yahoolah, how many salawats?" You all
  667. 26:55know what he said. Only five. Do I have
  668. 26:58to pray any sunnas? You don't have to
  669. 26:59pray in the sunnah and no the sahaba
  670. 27:02were shocked because none of them around
  671. 27:04him have abandoned the sunnah and none
  672. 27:07of them they're shocked how much and you
  673. 27:09know the hadith contrast this to to his
  674. 27:12advice to to his advice to his advice to
  675. 27:16his advice to is that pray to and please
  676. 27:20some he's telling them pray to and sleep
  677. 27:22as well that advice is not given to the
  678. 27:25bedin that advice is not given to the
  679. 27:27new convert Make sure you pray. You
  680. 27:30don't need to tell that the new convert,
  681. 27:32the new Muslim, the new practicing. Just
  682. 27:34pray your five prayers. Right? This is
  683. 27:37this is the teacher. You look at
  684. 27:39students where they are and you teach
  685. 27:41them according to their level. Again, so
  686. 27:43much more can be said. I don't want to
  687. 27:44go on and on. I know it's also a weak
  688. 27:45day. Um I'll just give you two more
  689. 27:47inshallah and then we'll call it a day.
  690. 27:49Um another example that I can give uh of
  691. 27:52his techniques of the prophetam's
  692. 27:54techniques uh and this is
  693. 27:56interesting to delay the response so
  694. 28:00that curiosity is peaked everybody's
  695. 28:02even more interested to delay don't
  696. 28:04answer the question this happened
  697. 28:06multiple times I have a number of
  698. 28:07examples of this so the man comes and
  699. 28:10the adan has been called but not the man
  700. 28:13comes says in the crowd yahool Allah I
  701. 28:16have committed a sin I did this and that
  702. 28:18and I kissed a lady and I had this and
  703. 28:20that. How embarrassing. Everybody's you
  704. 28:23say this again. You have to understand
  705. 28:25not everybody's cultured. Not everybody
  706. 28:27there are people that just barge in and
  707. 28:28ask the question and the prophet is
  708. 28:30sitting and it's time for salah. Few
  709. 28:32minutes left. He doesn't even
  710. 28:34respond. No response. Everybody's
  711. 28:37curiosity. What is going to happen now?
  712. 28:40Then is called he gives the when the
  713. 28:44prayer finishes he turns around goes
  714. 28:46where is that man who shouted that
  715. 28:48question where is that man the man
  716. 28:50stands up I am the one who asked the
  717. 28:51question then the prophet said didn't
  718. 28:54you do and come to the masid yes didn't
  719. 28:56you walk all the way yes didn't you pray
  720. 28:57with us didn't you do yes then don't you
  721. 29:00know
  722. 29:03that don't you know when you do a good
  723. 29:05deed it will cause your bad deeds to be
  724. 29:08wiped away The man became so happy, so
  725. 29:12overjoyed. He said, "Yeah, is this verse
  726. 29:14Allah revealed only for me?" Goes, "No,
  727. 29:16for you and everybody else as well."
  728. 29:18Right? But the happiness that the man
  729. 29:20felt and the the the way the prophet
  730. 29:23responded to him, right? This is
  731. 29:24teaching technique about you. The man
  732. 29:26will never forget and even this hadith
  733. 29:28makes us happy as well. The way that he
  734. 29:30responded. So simply by looking at the
  735. 29:33time, delaying and then giving the
  736. 29:35response at the right time. We can go on
  737. 29:37and on. I'll just conclude with
  738. 29:38obviously the main the main which is the
  739. 29:42most powerful mechanism and that is to
  740. 29:44teach with action and not with words.
  741. 29:47This is without a doubt the the dignity
  742. 29:52the the I mean what what I don't need to
  743. 29:55even give you this right the role model
