- 0:00The most perfect ingredient combinations
- 0:04for your skin concerns. We always talk
- 0:05about the single ingredient that does it
- 0:07all, but the practically some
- 0:09ingredients just work better together to
- 0:11achieve the results. So, we're going to
- 0:12be talking about by skin concern,
- 0:14whether you have dark spots, wrinkles,
- 0:16texture, which two ingredients would you
- 0:19use together to achieve the best
- 0:21efficacy in your routine. That'll
- 0:22simplify things and give you really the
- 0:24best results.
- 0:24>> Even if a single ingredient does
- 0:26everything, it's still not enough to do
- 0:27everything completely well. So, we'll
- 0:30talk about what the hero ingredient is,
- 0:32what its best pair is, and what you
- 0:33should be doing for your skin regardless
- 0:35of your skin concern. So, the best skin
- 0:37care pairs, here we go. Here we go.
- 0:44First up, rules of engagement. Can we
- 0:47repeat ingredients?
- 0:50>> Think we have to.
- 0:51>> Oh, of course. Yeah, so of course we can
- 0:52repeat ingredients per skin concern. Of
- 0:54course, yes. So, to kick it off, the
- 0:57perfect duo for wrinkles.
- 1:00>> Okay. So,
- 1:02this is like real-world practical versus
- 1:04maximizing efficacy. I still would have
- 1:07to say your retinoid, and I'll say
- 1:09tretinoin, plus your exfoliant, glycolic
- 1:12acid. I don't think there's a more
- 1:13powerful pair.
- 1:14>> Ooh, okay. Ooh, ah, that's surprising. I
- 1:18was [snorts] thinking retinoid,
- 1:20definitely, but potentially you could
- 1:22say vitamin C collagen building, but you
- 1:24could also go peptide direction with
- 1:25this one, too. You could go copper
- 1:27peptide or even other peptide, Matrixyl
- 1:30peptide, any other signaling peptide.
- 1:32Exfoliation, I'm like, "Ooh, that's
- 1:34texture more for me."
- 1:35>> Mhm, that's good. That's good. I'm going
- 1:37to go vitamin C retinoid as perfect
- 1:41combo for wrinkles.
- 1:42>> Yeah, I'm still going to go with
- 1:44um retinoids and glycolic acid because
- 1:46these exfoliators also do signal
- 1:48collagen building in addition to their
- 1:51direct keratolytic effect of smoothing
- 1:54out texture at the top of the skin, so
- 1:56>> That's fair. Dark spots, discoloration,
- 1:59hyperpigmentation, melasma, perfect duo
- 2:02of ingredients. Let's do
- 2:03over-the-counter first, and then let's
- 2:06do prescription.
- 2:07>> So, over-the-counter, I still think
- 2:09retinal, let's just air on efficacy
- 2:12again, is going to do them a lot of
- 2:14heavy lifting here, decrease pigment
- 2:15production in a unique way, increase
- 2:17skin cell turnover, removing existing
- 2:18pigment. And then,
- 2:21over-the-counter, I'm like, protection
- 2:24or brightening? Protec-
- 2:25>> Oh, well.
- 2:25>> I'm like, what's more important? We're
- 2:26picking two things here. So, I'm going
- 2:28to go with tinted sunscreen. So, I'm
- 2:30going to air on protection plus using
- 2:32the retinal for treatment as opposed to
- 2:34picking two treatment options. Tinted
- 2:36sunscreen protects from UV rays,
- 2:38protects from visible light, giving an
- 2:39added benefit specifically for your dark
- 2:41spots concerns.
- 2:42>> I think that's absolutely fair. Every
- 2:44study we've done on Remedy for Dark
- 2:46Spots, the patient was using a tinted
- 2:49sunscreen in the morning, and they were
- 2:50using Remedy for Dark Spots at night.
- 2:51So, I don't think you can use any dark
- 2:54spot treatment without that. And I would
- 2:55say, one ingredient over-the-counter
- 2:57that does dark spots, both the blocking
- 2:59of formation of dark spots and the
- 3:00removal of dark spots, would be a
- 3:01retinoid. And then, from an ingredient
- 3:03perspective, I'd pair it with any potent
- 3:05tyrosinase inhibitor, like arbutin or
- 3:08kojic acid. And on the prescription
- 3:09side, then you take a prescription
- 3:10tretinoin with a hydroquinone, which is
- 3:13a potent tyrosinase inhibitor. And that
- 3:14is the best combination, but you can
- 3:16only use that for a short period of
- 3:17time. And so, I would say, I agree with
- 3:19you. Sunscreen is critical path on any
- 3:22of this.
- 3:22>> Perfect.
- 3:23>> One of the greatest purchases I've ever
- 3:25made, and it's the electric toothbrush.
- 3:27I bought it actually for the first time
- 3:28at the age of 29, and I've never looked
- 3:30back. Now, if you already have an
- 3:32electric toothbrush, you know these take
- 3:33up a ton of space on the counter,
- 3:34they're not very aesthetic, they're
- 3:36impossible to travel with. And this is
- 3:38why, this is one of the coolest devices
- 3:40I've ever seen, the Suri toothbrush. So,
- 3:42when I first bought an electric
- 3:43toothbrush, it felt like an investment,
- 3:44but I really do believe it was worth it.
- 3:47And this one in particular, it is easy
- 3:49to carry with you. It has this
- 3:51incredible case with it. It also has
- 3:5230,000 sonic vibrations per minute for a
- 3:55deep but very gentle clean. And it has
- 3:57touch sense so you don't really overdo
- 3:59it. So you really don't want to be
- 4:00irritating your gums or your teeth and
- 4:01so it makes sure that you're not using
- 4:03too much pressure, too much force, or
- 4:04too much vibration if you're not using
- 4:06it correctly.
- 4:07>> It's powerful, it's gentle, it's a
- 4:08dentist approved clean, and it actually
- 4:10has a battery that lasts up to 4 weeks.
- 4:13>> Now I'm really into aesthetic bathrooms
- 4:14and I don't like things cluttering all
- 4:16over my counter and I have lots of skin
- 4:17care products there already. And one of
- 4:19my favorite things is the magnetic
- 4:20mirror mount. So you can attach this to
- 4:22your mirror and it basically sticks onto
- 4:24your mirror and you can keep your
- 4:25toothbrush there, which is really cool.
- 4:28>> And because we travel so much, we're
- 4:29actually traveling right now as we're
- 4:31filming. This is a huge game changer for
- 4:33us because not only does the battery
- 4:34last so long, it also has really
- 4:36incredible packaging that's so
- 4:37convenient to bring, but it also has a
- 4:39UVC cleaning mechanism. So it actually
- 4:41cleans it while you travel with it. If
- 4:43you ever put a moist toothbrush into a
- 4:45container, you know that you can get
- 4:47build up in there. And so having the UVC
- 4:49helps to decontaminate while you're
- 4:51traveling.
- 4:51>> It basically makes your whole routine
- 4:53and lifestyle simpler and you can use
- 4:55our code in the description for 15% off
- 4:57Surri today.
- 4:58>> So check it out below. You'll see why we
- 5:00love it so much. Now let's get back to
- 5:01the video.
- 5:02>> Next up, let's go with acne.
- 5:05>> Really some great over-the-counter
- 5:06options here for acne and I'll let you
- 5:09pick the first two this time.
- 5:10>> Ooh, this one is actually kind of
- 5:12exciting. I hadn't anything exciting to
- 5:13say about acne in a long time because
- 5:15the videos that we made 5 years ago play
- 5:17well today. I actually don't think much
- 5:19has changed in the acne space other than
- 5:20some products have different textures,
- 5:22but from a performance perspective,
- 5:24nothing has come out that I'd said is
- 5:25better than before in acne until today,
- 5:28I would say. So you don't even know what
- 5:29I'm going to say.
- 5:30>> Differin.
- 5:31>> Don't. Be with us, it's a product.
- 5:32>> Differin dropped Epiduo over the
- 5:34counter. This is huge news.
- 5:36>> This is the biggest news is
- 5:37>> I guess theoretically you could have
- 5:38done this yourself at home, but
- 5:40adapalene, one of the most effective
- 5:42acne treatment at home, period.
- 5:44>> Followed by benzoyl peroxide and then
- 5:47depending on how your skin tolerates it,
- 5:49you may choose other things as number
- 5:50two after adapalene. But now Differin
- 5:53has Epiduo available over the counter.
- 5:54It used to only be a prescription, so
- 5:55it's adapalene plus benzoyl peroxide in
- 5:57one product. And so I think lethal
- 5:59combinations when it comes to not lethal
- 6:01as in it will kill you, but lethal as in
- 6:03lethal for your acne is adapalene plus
- 6:06benzoyl peroxide, adapalene plus sulfur,
- 6:08adapalene plus salicylic acid depending
- 6:12on what your skin can tolerate. But I do
- 6:13think benzoyl peroxide of those is the
- 6:16most effective and then aselaic acid
- 6:18kind of falls in there as well.
- 6:19>> Yeah, I agree. So benzoyl peroxide and
- 6:21adapalene are the two hero ingredients.
- 6:23Just purely speaking in terms of
- 6:25efficacy, I don't think that there is
- 6:27anyone else competing for that top tier
- 6:29spot. My thought was that I just can't
- 6:32decide if I love benzoyl peroxide in a
- 6:33cleanser. I just think it works so well
- 6:36and it's a complimentary step. So
- 6:38whether you're using adapalene plus
- 6:39benzoyl peroxide leave-on in the
- 6:41Differin form or whether you're using
- 6:42adapalene plus benzoyl peroxide in your
- 6:44cleanser, I think both are going to be
- 6:47the most effective cornerstone for your
- 6:48acne treatment at home.
- 6:50>> Actually just I mean retinoid plus
- 6:52aselaic. Adapalene at night, aselaic in
- 6:55the morning.
- 6:56>> I still think benzoyl peroxide
- 6:58specifically for acne would outperform.
- 7:00>> Uh benzoyl peroxide definitely
- 7:02outperforms aselaic acid especially when
- 7:03it comes to inflammatory acne, but you
- 7:05only like it in a cleanser. I would say
- 7:07leave-on.
- 7:08>> No, I like it both. Like like
- 7:11It work both ways, but I just think
- 7:14because cleansing step is a step you're
- 7:16already doing, it helps you put an
- 7:18ingredient that you should use into a
- 7:20step that already exists and it frees up
- 7:22a step in the rest of your skin care
- 7:24routine.
- 7:25>> benzoyl peroxide cleanser, adapalene
- 7:27leave-on. That's the combo.
- 7:29>> Right, yeah.
- 7:30>> Agreed. And then as a third, aselaic in
- 7:32the morning.
- 7:33>> Okay,
- 7:33>> [laughter]
- 7:33>> so still a third. Okay, great.
- 7:35>> And then prescription when it comes to
- 7:36acne, it's still going to be a retinoid
- 7:38whether it's a stronger retinoid like
- 7:40tretinoin, higher strength of adapalene
- 7:42or even tazarotene, and then you're
- 7:43going to pair that again with benzoyl
- 7:45peroxide or azelaic acid because or
- 7:48clindamycin, some type of antibacterial
- 7:50agent. And then we have other oral
- 7:52medications that come after that, but
- 7:53the combination and the theory is still
- 7:55sort of the same at prescription. We
- 7:56just have higher strengths of the
- 7:58options that are available over the
- 7:59counter.
- 8:00>> So, not quite revisiting a problem, but
- 8:03perhaps revisiting a pair is going to be
- 8:06texture. Now, when we think of texture,
- 8:08it's a really hard one to actually
- 8:09describe, I think, because it sometimes
- 8:11it's pores, sometimes it's built up just
- 8:13dead retained stratum corneum. Some
- 8:15people actually incorporate fine lines
- 8:16into texture as well, and even if you
- 8:18try to search for an image like for
- 8:20usage of textured skin, it's difficult
- 8:22because there's so many different
- 8:24things. Now, the main components for
- 8:25this, I think, are going to be
- 8:26exfoliation, removing built-up skin
- 8:29cells, just improving the smoothness of
- 8:31your skin. And for that, I go back to my
- 8:34first pair, which is retinoids
- 8:35exfoliants, and we can say retinol,
- 8:37retinal, and an alpha hydroxy acid.
- 8:40>> 100% retinoids plus alpha hydroxy acids,
- 8:43the number one thing that you can do for
- 8:45texture overall. And so,
- 8:46over-the-counter, you can even use
- 8:48adapalene in this case, even though it's
- 8:49for acne, it does really well for
- 8:50texture. Or any retinol or retinal-based
- 8:53product is going to do really well here.
- 8:55And then you combine that with a higher
- 8:57strength potential exfoliating acid.
- 9:00Glycolic acid is going to be the most
- 9:01effective, but if you have drier skin,
- 9:03you may like lactic acid. If you have
- 9:04sensitive skin, you may like the
- 9:06polyhydroxy acids like gluconolactone or
- 9:08lactobionic acid. I think from an
- 9:10efficacy standpoint, glycolic acid plus
- 9:12adapalene would be absolute the best
- 9:15thing you could do over the counter.
- 9:17>> Yeah, I agree. Those are great tools
- 9:18that would address all the changes of
- 9:19texture. And if you're going to build a
- 9:21routine surrounding those ingredients,
- 9:23that would be good, but I would start
- 9:24with those two.
- 9:25>> Large pores, the impossible thing to
- 9:28treat.
- 9:28>> Yeah, pores are so structural. It's not
- 9:31just the oil gland at the bottom, it's
- 9:32the whole structure surrounding it. And
- 9:34so here, limiting the conversation to
- 9:37topicals, I think structurally,
- 9:40okay, I'll go with adapalene and
- 9:42salicylic acid as my two. So, adapalene,
- 9:44having all those changes of retinoids we
- 9:46talked about already, salicylic acid,
- 9:48depending on how you use it, will help
- 9:49remove oil from the pores, help decrease
- 9:51oil production a bit, and also add some
- 9:53exfoliation to impact the structure of
- 9:55the pore itself.
- 9:56>> Yeah, totally agree with you. Hair loss.
- 9:59>> Hair loss. Oh, oh, okay. Hair loss, I
- 10:02have topical minoxidil, obviously the
- 10:04gold standard, every other ingredient is
- 10:06compared to that. And I still love The
- 10:08Ordinary Hair Peptide Serum. It's not a
- 10:09single ingredient, but it's just a
- 10:11complimentary blend of peptides in one
- 10:14step that I think supports minoxidil
- 10:16really well.
- 10:17>> Yeah, and they work by different
- 10:18mechanisms, minoxidil, so they actually
- 10:20are complimentary. So, some of the
- 10:22things that we're talking about in this
- 10:23video are they're ingredients that work
- 10:26by different mechanisms to achieve the
- 10:28objective. So, for example, when we're
- 10:30talking about exfoliation, it's, you
- 10:31know, retinoids increasing skin cell
- 10:32turnover, decreasing the stickiness,
- 10:34being comedolytic to some extent, and
- 10:36then you have the exfoliating acid that,
- 10:38you know, is additive because of its
- 10:39comedolytic properties. Then you have,
- 10:41with this, minoxidil working by a
- 10:43totally different mechanism than The
- 10:45Ordinary Peptide Serum. Whereas, like,
- 10:47if you took Kopexil, for example, also
- 10:50known as aminexil, works by similar
- 10:52mechanism as minoxidil, so you don't
- 10:54necessarily need to use those two
- 10:55together, but Ordinary Peptide Serum
- 10:57plus minoxidil to really achieve those
- 10:59over-the-counter topical hair loss
- 11:00goals.
- 11:01>> So, what we've given you, basically, is
- 11:03if you're building your skin care
- 11:04routine around a specific skin care
- 11:05concern, which is how you should always
- 11:07do it, these are some of the best pairs
- 11:09to provide a cornerstone and foundation
- 11:11for you to start with. You might need to
- 11:13do more, you might want to do more, but
- 11:14if you're going to pick two things,
- 11:16these might be the best places to start.
- 11:18>> Now, we mentioned lots of ingredients
- 11:20here, and we'll actually put links below
- 11:22of products that have those ingredients
- 11:24that you can then use in your routine to
- 11:26achieve your goals. So, hopefully you
- 11:27found this helpful. I do think with two
- 11:28ingredients, and sometimes three
- 11:30ingredients, depending on how complex
- 11:31the condition is, you can probably
- 11:33achieve the goals and usually one
- 11:34ingredient's not going to do it all, but
- 11:35when you get to two ingredients, you
- 11:37really can really treat most of the
- 11:39causes of skin conditions that are out
- 11:40there. So, thank you all so much for
- 11:41tuning in. Please like, comment, and
- 11:42subscribe, and we'll see you in the next
- 11:44video. We'll see you next time.
