- 0:46>> What's up, guys? Welcome back to Large
- 0:48Lads, the most lethal lifting show on
- 0:50the internet with your host, Murder Max,
- 0:52Killer Clong, and Slaughter Sam.
- 0:54>> Very violent. What if you get us
- 0:55demonetized? Thank you to the fan who
- 0:56submitted that one except for how to
- 0:58come up with one.
- 0:58>> These videos that we can't monetize like
- 1:0090% of the time because of our use of
- 1:02copyrighted music in
- 1:03>> Yeah, this is the one that you can't
- 1:04actually monetize. They were wearing
- 1:05hats, so I had to make my own.
- 1:07>> Yeah, I didn't know Max didn't own hats
- 1:08until today.
- 1:09>> The return of the top hat.
- 1:11>> I will be going bald. So, I was thinking
- 1:12I might as well reintroduce the top hats
- 1:14now.
- 1:14>> You got to start exploring.
- 1:15>> Every bald guy in the world has to come
- 1:17up with what style of hat they are.
- 1:18>> Yeah, start exploring hats.
- 1:19>> I've never seen a bald bald guy commit
- 1:22to the top hat.
- 1:23>> I've not seen it. That's going to be my
- 1:25stick.
- 1:25>> I've seen a bunch of people wearing
- 1:26those like little like golf caps again.
- 1:28Those are coming back. Have you seen
- 1:30that?
- 1:30>> Oh, the ple peaky blinders ones. Yeah,
- 1:32those ones are coming back.
- 1:33>> Whack. [laughter]
- 1:36>> Listen, self-exression is sick. The old
- 1:39When I was younger, I would see people
- 1:40like wear goofy [ __ ] I'm like, WHAT A
- 1:42[ __ ] IDIOT. NOW THAT I'VE GOTTEN
- 1:44OLDER, I WAS LIKE, MAN, being boring is
- 1:46boring. I respect the people that are
- 1:49willing to eat everybody looking at them
- 1:51and thinking, "What an idiot." Because
- 1:53they like something.
- 1:54>> That's awesome.
- 1:54>> The Pey Blinders hats are even in my era
- 1:57of self-expression is cool.
- 1:59>> Yeah. No, man.
- 2:01>> There's there's a minimum age
- 2:02requirement on that one.
- 2:04>> Uh, you know, I I think the uh the
- 2:07British strong men hitting it all
- 2:08hitting it recently is kind of
- 2:09endearing. Like,
- 2:10>> well, if you're British and above a
- 2:11certain age, by all means, right?
- 2:13>> Yeah. If you're British and you're above
- 2:14like 30 or you look like you're above 30
- 2:17like Luke Richardson. Yeah. Right. Like
- 2:19okay. Him and Graham wearing them like
- 2:21all right this is pretty this is
- 2:22actually pretty endearing. I like it.
- 2:24>> But young American dude it's a hard
- 2:26cell.
- 2:27>> Cool.
- 2:29I'm really contradicting myself bad on
- 2:31this self-expressionist based and cool
- 2:33thing.
- 2:35These I'm going start knocking these
- 2:37[ __ ] cowboy hats off of people's
- 2:38heads. [laughter]
- 2:39>> I love that they started with Yeah. You
- 2:41know, I just, you know, like I really
- 2:43respect people who will go out there and
- 2:44wear what they want to. That's not going
- 2:45to stop me from thinking you're a
- 2:47[laughter] piece of [ __ ]
- 2:47>> Top hats. Awesome. Laring as a cowboy.
- 2:50You are a frat bro and a COWBOY HAT. GET
- 2:53THE [ __ ] OUT OF HERE. [laughter]
- 2:56>> There's a lot of those here.
- 2:57>> Every time every time we're in town in
- 2:59Bosezeman, they're just like walking
- 3:00around all over the place. I was like,
- 3:01"There has never been mud on your boots,
- 3:03you larer."
- 3:04>> Yeah.
- 3:04>> The way that people drive F-150s around
- 3:06here, you know, it really I I'll have
- 3:08some evil thoughts, by [laughter] the
- 3:10way. I I have to consciously catch
- 3:13myself sometimes like some guy will like
- 3:15blow by me when the weather conditions
- 3:16are terrible. I'm like I hope I see you
- 3:18in the ditch in a while. I I hope you
- 3:21don't die. I don't you know NOTHING BAD
- 3:23HAPPENS. I HOPE you're stuck in that
- 3:25ditch
- 3:25>> and also injured you know and lose your
- 3:27>> and lose [laughter] your job.
- 3:32>> Maybe maybe you hurt your shin hurts
- 3:34really bad actually.
- 3:35>> Yeah knee is never the same perhaps.
- 3:37>> Okay. away then they use one. [laughter]
- 3:41I can always count on every time we
- 3:43start going with a bit you immediately
- 3:46just take it too far where you're like
- 3:48we're like we don't like Mitcher and
- 3:50YOU'RE LIKE WE WISH DEATH ON HIM LIKE
- 3:52WAIT
- 3:54stop I don't know what the point of
- 3:56large lads is if I can't express my
- 3:57honest opinion
- 3:58>> godamn
- 4:00self expression [laughter]
- 4:03>> that's a form of self-expression
- 4:04actually your base there you go
- 4:07>> all right so I wrote down a bunch of
- 4:08stuff for the day Um,
- 4:12which one do I want to do first?
- 4:15Um, you and I were talking about the
- 4:17other day. I love when like someone
- 4:18stumbles upon our in one of our
- 4:19Instagrams. They're like, "Oh, man. This
- 4:21guy's pretty strong." And they don't
- 4:23know that there's a brother.
- 4:25>> Oh, that brings me so much joy.
- 4:27>> It is such a nuclear bomb. Cuz I've had
- 4:28a couple people be like, "Oh, yeah, you
- 4:29know, I'm coming up on your bench
- 4:30press." And I'm like, "Yeah, you're the
- 4:32second strongest sheet, bro. You got
- 4:34600."
- 4:35>> [laughter]
- 4:35>> I enjoy like I'll be at like we'll be
- 4:37like traveling or something and I'll go
- 4:38to a gym and like so we'll be like,
- 4:40"Holy [ __ ] that squad is crazy." I was
- 4:43like, "Yeah, you should see my little
- 4:45brother. He can do this for [ __ ]
- 4:46eight." [laughter]
- 4:48You you started adopting the same thing
- 4:50our dad does. We're like, "Yeah, you
- 4:52should see my my son. He's [ __ ]
- 4:53enormous."
- 4:54>> I do I do flagrantly lie about I'm like,
- 4:57"Dude, Max is [ __ ] 6'8", 400 lb.
- 4:59[laughter] I Kirsten actually does this
- 5:02where Kirsten keeps forgetting how Max
- 5:04is 6'2. Kirsten keeps forgetting how
- 5:07tall you are and will be like well he's
- 5:08pretty big so he must be about 6'4 6'5
- 5:11and he's like 400 I think he's like 400
- 5:13genuinely and then every time someone
- 5:15meets you in person they're
- 5:16disappointed.
- 5:17>> I keep like stealing Kirsten's jobs. I'm
- 5:19three for three right now of [laughter]
- 5:20stealing Kirsten.
- 5:22>> That's true. Kirsten worked at a pizza
- 5:23place. Followed her to the pizza place.
- 5:25>> I went and did that for a while. went to
- 5:27a lab. I went to that lab. It was me.
- 5:30I'm a coach. Now I'm a coach.
- 5:31>> Dude, you you you've shared the last
- 5:33same last three employers.
- 5:34>> I keep picking stupid just like I'm
- 5:37going to go throw tires up a hill and
- 5:39then I'm like, "Oh, well, this actually
- 5:40sucked ass. [laughter] Chris's job pays
- 5:42more money. It is way easier. I should
- 5:44go do that."
- 5:46>> I was going to say I was going to say he
- 5:47had the same last three employers, but
- 5:48then I was like, "Well, he did work at
- 5:49that lumber yard for one day."
- 5:51>> Hey, two days, right? Two.
- 5:52>> It was so funny. Max went to his m like
- 5:54it would be a good job. And then he was
- 5:55just immediately like, "Oh, this is
- 5:56going to [ __ ] my training. Never mind."
- 5:58>> Did we tell the story of how then you
- 6:00saw the guy who owns the lumber yard at
- 6:01our gym?
- 6:02>> He works at our He works at our gym.
- 6:04[laughter] He's always like side eyeing
- 6:05that.
- 6:05>> I I no call, no show. Quit that job.
- 6:08>> And then I was like, thank God. I do
- 6:11that.
- 6:12>> Wait, why did you do that?
- 6:13>> Uh, so it was not like an active choice.
- 6:16It was that like my shift started at
- 6:175:30 and I was like, I'm going to go to
- 6:19sleep
- 6:20>> and then I just slept like through it.
- 6:22>> Okay, but what about calling? Well, then
- 6:23they called me and then they were like,
- 6:25"Hey, what's going on?" I was like, "I'm
- 6:26not coming back."
- 6:27>> This is Okay. Well, this [laughter]
- 6:30this is actually morally not the right
- 6:31thing to do, brother. What the [ __ ]
- 6:33>> Yeah, I know. I was in the wrong
- 6:34[laughter] I like this is an awesome
- 6:36story that projects my best qualities. I
- 6:39was a teenager working a bad like a
- 6:41stupid job and I was like, I want to
- 6:43play War Zone and I just slipped right
- 6:45through my shift.
- 6:46>> H damn. Good times.
- 6:48>> Yeah, crazy stuff. I was living in
- 6:49someone else's parents' basement and I
- 6:51just I just slept right through a shift.
- 6:54>> It cracks me up how that is just like
- 6:55the general Zoomer methodology now is
- 6:59just ghosting jobs. I was like, I don't
- 7:02have to put this on my resume. So, it
- 7:04doesn't really matter. They're never
- 7:05going to contact you. [laughter] I'm not
- 7:07going to give you their information.
- 7:08>> Exactly. You work there for one day.
- 7:10There's no gap in your employment.
- 7:12>> Yeah. I'm going to go get a different
- 7:13job.
- 7:13>> That guy That guy is nice, too. [gasps]
- 7:16>> He's a nice guy.
- 7:17>> That's it. Well, it's a shame cuz he's
- 7:19real nice of me. She's like, "Dude,
- 7:20you're so strong. That's awesome." And
- 7:21I'm just like, [laughter]
- 7:23>> "I swear to God, you're the only job
- 7:24I've ever done that to," which is not
- 7:26true. [laughter]
- 7:32[laughter]
- 7:33All right. Well, so I I had another one
- 7:34that I thought was so so funny is like
- 7:36usually we'll talk about like lifters or
- 7:39athletes as being like genetically
- 7:42gifted, right? And sometimes we'll just
- 7:44say like, "Oh, they're really athletic,
- 7:46right?" Um, and like people come with
- 7:49this big athletic background. They tend
- 7:50to get really good at lifting really
- 7:52quickly. Even like bodybuilding, you can
- 7:53leverage your athletic history and
- 7:56knowing how to push all these things,
- 7:57right? It's not all the same though
- 8:00because you can get like the you can get
- 8:01the really gifted guy who's both
- 8:02coordinated and very like powerful. But
- 8:05there are people who are very
- 8:07coordinated and not particularly
- 8:08powerful. And then there's my favorite
- 8:11subdemographic which is naturally
- 8:14extremely powerful motor morons.
- 8:16>> It seems
- 8:17>> I love those guys.
- 8:18>> It's like one that's like kind of the
- 8:20most enviable position, right?
- 8:22>> No. No, it's not.
- 8:23>> But but just just for like rad points,
- 8:24right? Cuz they're always all jacked
- 8:26too. They they're
- 8:27>> there's some correlation with just being
- 8:29so explosive and just being like for
- 8:31some reason a lean 230 natty guy being
- 8:34powerful as [ __ ] and also moving things
- 8:37in an inefficient way makes you very
- 8:38much
- 8:39>> it must be so frustrating to be like I
- 8:40know I'm stronger than all of these
- 8:43dudes but you'll never be world class
- 8:45cuz you move in such a stupid way.
- 8:47>> It is.
- 8:47>> And they never get it either. They're
- 8:48just like I don't know what's happening.
- 8:49I can out dumbbell bench and curl and
- 8:51tricep extension all these guys and then
- 8:53I keep freaking out on the bench and
- 8:54it's not going well. [laughter]
- 8:57Um,
- 8:58yeah, dude. It's so funny like working
- 9:00with those guys. It's like you are just
- 9:02you touch a dumbbell, you get stronger.
- 9:04You move so power. You're just so just
- 9:07pure strength. Like if if you if we were
- 9:09to wrestle right now, I would be like
- 9:11immediately able to identify that this
- 9:13guy's strong as [ __ ] and is so
- 9:15>> Every time I get a new clan, I'm like,
- 9:16"What if we were to wrestle?" [laughter]
- 9:18>> That's how I appraise them.
- 9:20>> What if what if me and were you to
- 9:21wrestle
- 9:23[laughter]
- 9:24>> those? It's so funny like people don't
- 9:26know what to make of those guys. I also
- 9:28feel bad for the people on the other end
- 9:29of the spectrum who are like they are
- 9:31athletic in that they are unbelievably
- 9:34coordinated but they're not particularly
- 9:37naturally strong or fast. You you can
- 9:39learn a good sumo. You can carve a real
- 9:42niche for yourself in a lot of sports by
- 9:44being like the guy who is very propricep
- 9:46like not particularly explosive. He's
- 9:49not particularly strong but like your
- 9:52gift is bodily awareness.
- 9:54doesn't go quite as far in powerlifting.
- 9:56Like, yeah, you can learn a nice nice
- 9:57sumo, but uh at some point you're going
- 9:59to get cucked by the guy who does not
- 10:02know how to jump, but can somehow speed
- 10:04squat 500.
- 10:05>> It is funny that both ends of the
- 10:07spectrum you still kind of like you're
- 10:08going to lose to the person who has
- 10:10both, you know?
- 10:10>> Yeah, of course. Right. like you but but
- 10:12I that's kind of what I find endearing
- 10:14about like strength sports is I do think
- 10:18that like I I think you could put all
- 10:19sports on like a continuum of like skill
- 10:22to like physical qualities.
- 10:24>> Y
- 10:25>> right like there's a lot of sprinting
- 10:27skill but it's compared to other sports
- 10:30it's a very like all technique is
- 10:32involved in these things but it's very
- 10:34physical parameters dependent. Yeah. uh
- 10:36distance biking, there's a technique to
- 10:39it, there's like a pacing, there's a
- 10:40like but it's very physicality dependent
- 10:43and also those are the sports that are
- 10:44guaranteed to dope.
- 10:45>> Yeah.
- 10:45>> Where phys if physicality is always
- 10:47going to be the rate limiter and it's
- 10:48not skill that's where you get
- 10:50guaranteed doping.
- 10:52>> But um I like that strength sports most
- 10:55of them fall pretty far towards that
- 10:57physicality side where it's like even if
- 10:59you're a little underkilled if you're
- 11:01strong enough you're still quite good. I
- 11:03love how many guys are pissed about how
- 11:04much skill is required to be good at
- 11:06strength sports.
- 11:07>> IMAGINE LIKE THIS IS SUCH A LOW SKILLING
- 11:10SPORT. Like God, this shit's so [ __ ]
- 11:12stupid. [laughter]
- 11:14Dude, what? Like is is your dream sport
- 11:16just sitting on the leg extension and we
- 11:18all just [laughter] like go.
- 11:19>> I mean that's becoming like its own
- 11:21genre of training right now.
- 11:23>> It kind of is. Yeah.
- 11:25>> I listen I get the [ __ ] argument this
- 11:27is just what how good this is what good
- 11:28hypertrophy training is. Guys are just
- 11:31doing strength training on the leg
- 11:32extension.
- 11:34>> Guys don't want to learn how to squat.
- 11:36>> Yeah, that's that's become like its own
- 11:38genre of training is like strength
- 11:40training with the intent of showing off
- 11:42like a four or five RM on stable
- 11:45machines.
- 11:47I think there's a little bit of nuance.
- 11:48I don't think that's the exact same
- 11:50thing as really effective bodybuilding.
- 11:51you know, crucify me if you want, but
- 11:53like just being like training for a T-
- 11:55bar row 4RM is like now one of the most
- 11:57popular training styles in the world.
- 11:59[laughter]
- 12:02>> Oh, I was going to say the thing, but I
- 12:03just lost it.
- 12:04>> We should make a new strength sport
- 12:05where it's just going out and maxing on
- 12:06a machine so all these guys have
- 12:08something to do.
- 12:09>> Ah, yeah. The the prime machine 1RM
- 12:12contest. [laughter]
- 12:13>> Oh, I remember what I was going to say.
- 12:14>> Super super total. It's 25 events. Uh,
- 12:17in PT that happened all the time where
- 12:19someone's shoulder would hurt and they
- 12:20would come in and then the PT at the gym
- 12:22would teach them how to bench press
- 12:24properly. They'd be like, "Man, I had no
- 12:26idea benching was this technical." And I
- 12:28was like, "Well, yeah, they yeah, it's a
- 12:30there's some technique to benching
- 12:32without hurting yourself." But also,
- 12:34compared to like other sports, like you
- 12:36g like and it worked better. Like,
- 12:39>> but I think that's like foundational to
- 12:41how a lot of people view it is like the
- 12:43weight room is a thing with it's it's a
- 12:45lot of the same thing of like people who
- 12:47are not particularly savvy don't realize
- 12:50that there is running technique past
- 12:52just not looking like a idiot.
- 12:54>> Yeah, that's fair.
- 12:55>> They don't understand that there's like
- 12:56a high ceiling for efficient efficiences
- 13:02like you just [ __ ] run. It's the same
- 13:04people are like, "You just [ __ ] press
- 13:05the bar." And it's like, well, when
- 13:07technically true,
- 13:08>> when pressing the bar and running
- 13:09becomes the sport, there's very much
- 13:11technique involved. You know what I
- 13:12mean?
- 13:13>> I got a huge boost of confidence the
- 13:15other day.
- 13:16>> I had three old men at Costco ask me how
- 13:18much I bench press.
- 13:19>> Detailing and and thundering. Sorry,
- 13:22it's so distracting.
- 13:23>> So sunny.
- 13:24>> That's pretty cool. Uh, go ahead, old
- 13:25man.
- 13:26>> I had three old men ask me how much I
- 13:27bench press at Costco in one day.
- 13:29>> Dude, that's [laughter]
- 13:30awesome. Yeah, I was I was there to get
- 13:32new glasses and I I was like, dude, I
- 13:34was like [ __ ] spelt in this shirt.
- 13:36[laughter] What the [ __ ]
- 13:37>> I heard um I heard John Hack say it ages
- 13:39ago. I'm on the same boat where I'm
- 13:41like, I need to start I'm going to start
- 13:42lying downward in my benchmarks.
- 13:44>> Oh my god. I had a guy like you, yo, do
- 13:46you bench 300? I WAS LIKE, YEP.
- 13:48[laughter]
- 13:49I'M NOT GOING TO BE LIKE, "NO, I bench
- 13:50five. You won't piece."
- 13:53>> Every time. Every time.
- 13:54>> 405 is a good answer.
- 13:55>> I might start going and saying
- 13:57>> that's like realistic enough that they
- 13:58won't think you're lying. I they just
- 14:00>> 600 is a cartoonish number especially
- 14:02cuz like you are like a big guy but not
- 14:04like you look like a normal big guy.
- 14:07>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:08>> Like you say 600 sounds
- 14:09>> as hurtful as what you just said to me
- 14:11was
- 14:11>> cuz I damn
- 14:12>> I'm trying really hard to not look
- 14:14normal but
- 14:16>> Well, you're very good poundforpound.
- 14:18>> I know [laughter] that sucks.
- 14:20>> Your dots is crazy, bro.
- 14:21>> But people just like look like it's like
- 14:22if you say four or five like holy [ __ ]
- 14:24bro. That's crazy. I knew a guy did that
- 14:25once. Right. But if you say 600, they
- 14:27just look at you weird and move on. I'm
- 14:28like, "Okay, I guess I'm going to start
- 14:29saying a lower number." I feel even the
- 14:30worst for John.
- 14:31>> Oh my god. Just being like a normalsized
- 14:34dude and then being like, "Yeah, I bench
- 14:3766 lb."
- 14:38>> At this point, you can't say John is a
- 14:40normalsized dude.
- 14:41>> Yeah. He's 23.
- 14:42>> John Hack would be one of the most
- 14:44muscular human beings you've ever seen
- 14:46in person.
- 14:46>> Oh god. Cuz he went up. He's a 220 now,
- 14:48which means he's like actually like 235.
- 14:49Yeah. No. Okay. So, you know, look at
- 14:52look at regular jacket guy. [laughter]
- 14:53>> The internet. This is something
- 14:55>> dad bod,
- 14:57>> dude. John is just like a little victim
- 14:59weight dad bod, but he benches.
- 15:01[laughter]
- 15:01>> It's so strange. How's he going to do
- 15:02that?
- 15:03>> How does he do that? Um, [ __ ] What were
- 15:06we just saying? What were we just
- 15:07talking about?
- 15:09>> Uh, you looking like a normal big guy,
- 15:12not a giant. [laughter]
- 15:14>> It's funny because there's there's it
- 15:15goes two ways. It's very rarely
- 15:17accurate. like you you follow people who
- 15:19are like strong guys or big guys on the
- 15:21internet and you see them in person and
- 15:24they're never what they look like on the
- 15:26internet. They're either much much
- 15:28bigger for some reason.
- 15:30>> Y
- 15:30>> or they are much much smaller and are
- 15:34either very short or have been using
- 15:35like crazy angles
- 15:37>> and are nothing. Either way, I've been
- 15:39surprised every single time we've gone
- 15:41to like a big contest I saw someone that
- 15:44I like follow online. They're either I'm
- 15:45like, "Oh, wow. You are a much more
- 15:48muscular human being than I thought. Or
- 15:50you're not that [laughter] big. You're a
- 15:52little guy.
- 15:53>> You're a little guy.
- 15:54>> Especially powerlifterss I feel like
- 15:55more often fall into the little guy
- 15:57category.
- 15:57>> I really get the temptation of both
- 15:59multiply guys and bumfed guys. We're
- 16:02like to normal people. If you could just
- 16:04say a bigger number, that's your weird
- 16:06ego.
- 16:07>> You can say I bet A,000B [laughter]
- 16:10go 1,000b.
- 16:12You think 300? How about 1300?
- 16:14[laughter]
- 16:15Yeah, that that's I feel like that was
- 16:17like the driving force behind the
- 16:19multiply era.
- 16:20>> And that's also the driving force
- 16:21between behind all these teenagers doing
- 16:22it again.
- 16:23>> I saw his [ __ ] Yeah, I know the
- 16:24slingshot ass 900. Like, well, yeah, it
- 16:27was a quick, but like it's still 900.
- 16:29>> 900 lb.
- 16:30>> NO, IT'S NOT. [laughter]
- 16:32>> I almost broke my no commenting on
- 16:33random [ __ ] policy the other day cuz I
- 16:36saw it was this was ages ago. I know
- 16:38Dennis, I know you watch these. Dennis
- 16:40was freaking D was beefing with this guy
- 16:41who's like the second best multiply
- 16:45bencher basic. He's uh the guy who gets
- 16:47cucked by Jimmy Cole brutally.
- 16:49>> Sport is so small that you can just beat
- 16:51with a random [laughter]
- 16:52like I could probably get the attention
- 16:53of any world champion if I just made
- 16:55enough of a stink.
- 16:56>> He's just like I bench a thousand. I bet
- 16:57a thousand. It was like this guy's whole
- 16:58thing is just telling people that he
- 17:00benches a thousand without mentioning
- 17:01what multiply is. And he was talking
- 17:03down to Dennis. Dennis bench is more raw
- 17:05than you without your magical suit.
- 17:07Dennis is a better Dennis is natty. At
- 17:10least minimum talk to that man as an
- 17:12equal. Suck my dick.
- 17:14>> Well, he does double the weight. Sam,
- 17:15you [ __ ]
- 17:16>> I do twice. That was basically like,
- 17:17let's see you [ __ ] unrackck this.
- 17:20Let's see you go do Dennis's Max with
- 17:21our shirt on. You're going to tear your
- 17:23little weak equipped guy peck. [ __ ] you.
- 17:26Do not disrespect my goat. [laughter]
- 17:29I uh I those are the very very common
- 17:31thing of people like really wanting to
- 17:33like go to wherever they can say that
- 17:34they're a world champion. That's a
- 17:36really lame one.
- 17:37>> Yeah, that's that's something that's
- 17:38always been like if people act like it's
- 17:40getting worse. It's always been a thing.
- 17:42>> Also, why USA appeal national office has
- 17:44$3,000 people going to it?
- 17:46>> Oh, just to say you went to that's
- 17:48>> what the [ __ ] that's a [laughter]
- 17:50sickest market game was like pay us $300
- 17:53and we'll let you say that you're a
- 17:54national level competitor.
- 17:55>> Yeah, that's a that's a really
- 17:57interesting thing is not to let this
- 17:59I'll move on in a second. I don't want
- 18:00this to be like an overly negative
- 18:02podcast, but it's so in like I just not
- 18:04interesting. It's obvious. This is a
- 18:05normal thing. This is how everything is.
- 18:07But as like a purist of liking like
- 18:09strength training in the sport, it
- 18:11people are a lot less interested in like
- 18:13mastering the sport or like getting to a
- 18:15legitimately high level. They're a lot
- 18:17more consider like it doesn't matter
- 18:19what level they're at. As long as they
- 18:20can say something that holds value to
- 18:22people that don't know about it. Long as
- 18:24it doesn't matter if I'm actually
- 18:25competitive at nationals if I can tell
- 18:27people I'm a nationals competitor. It
- 18:28doesn't matter if I'm actually anywhere
- 18:30near the world record if I can say I'm a
- 18:32world record holder. like the title
- 18:34means more than the actual level because
- 18:37you know that it's only a niche group of
- 18:40people that are familiar with enough
- 18:42with the nuances to see what level
- 18:44you're actually at.
- 18:46>> My uh my my power peak accomplishment
- 18:48was my first my first meet
- 18:50>> cuz I won AA World Championship. That's
- 18:52my first competition.
- 18:53>> You should put that in your bio.
- 18:54>> Yeah. [laughter]
- 18:56>> And you put the year 2015 AAOU youth one
- 19:00world champion. Actually, you should put
- 19:01that in your bio. That's pretty funny.
- 19:03The stronger you get, the funnier that
- 19:04gets. That's good. That sounds really
- 19:06good. It is really weird to see people
- 19:08who like get stuck at a local level just
- 19:10because like the idea of being like the
- 19:12coolest guy at the local meet is like
- 19:14that's good enough for me. Uh versus the
- 19:16people who are like [ __ ] it, I'm going
- 19:17to go lose at Nats. That like way cooler
- 19:19decision in my mind, but also like I
- 19:20mean both are valid like
- 19:21>> Yeah.
- 19:22>> Yeah. The uh the next thing I had in my
- 19:24notes here was I was like exercises that
- 19:27like I view as like pretty foundational
- 19:29to complement the pretty base strength
- 19:32training, right? Like you and I have
- 19:33talked endlessly about how RDL's like
- 19:36just learn to do a good flatback RDL
- 19:38where you go like all the way down all
- 19:40the way back up with back flat uh is
- 19:42like just a such a foundational tool for
- 19:44long-term develop deadlift development
- 19:46and like learning a good high bar squat
- 19:48is like a very good foundational tool. I
- 19:51genuinely feel like ab wheel goes in
- 19:53that category where if you can learn
- 19:56like a good tech where you're not
- 19:57arching to get out of the bottom.
- 19:59Learning a good technique ab wheel will
- 20:01just kind of cover your bases from now
- 20:04till the end of time and just learning
- 20:05that like to get really good at it and
- 20:07like maybe you get really strong and you
- 20:09need to add weight, maybe you need to
- 20:10add tempos and pauses and maybe you need
- 20:11to do it in more of a cluster fashion to
- 20:13get to hard reps faster because you
- 20:15could do a bunch of reps. But it's just
- 20:16like that tool is a tool that never
- 20:18expires. I uh go in phases of like
- 20:22motions that I'm like super bought in
- 20:24on, right? Like we had my little
- 20:25dumbbell row arc where I was like, "This
- 20:27is the best motion in the world."
- 20:28>> Every one of Max's clients was doing
- 20:29>> every single one of the the rat pack was
- 20:31getting dumbbell rows that month. That
- 20:32was [ __ ] uh I am like I always like
- 20:35god I think a wheel is maybe the best
- 20:37appotion for like the number of times
- 20:39I've come like you were saying like
- 20:41things come in waves, right? Like and
- 20:42the same thing is like true in broader
- 20:44lifting. Um, the more times something
- 20:47comes back as a wave, the more you
- 20:49should probably take a hard look at it.
- 20:51>> Yeah. Like planks weighted are really
- 20:53like probably the best drill.
- 20:55>> Yep.
- 20:55>> I think ab wheel is the best thing to
- 20:57actually strengthen like the what like
- 20:58you need to like counter the force of
- 21:01your low back [ __ ] trying to pull an
- 21:02extension.
- 21:03>> Mhm. Yeah. Like because I think I think
- 21:04planks are great especially if you're
- 21:06like in a strongman gym with sandbags
- 21:07and you got someone strong to put a big
- 21:08sandbag like there's overload potential
- 21:10there
- 21:10>> or if you're not strong enough to do an
- 21:11ab wheel yet.
- 21:12>> Yes. That is the like a hollow hold or a
- 21:15plank or a dead bug. It's like isometric
- 21:18ab work is a something you could do to
- 21:20build towards ab wheel. Assisted ab
- 21:22wheels where you put like a band around
- 21:23your waist and like those are the
- 21:24regression.
- 21:26>> But then abhe variations just kind of
- 21:29expand indefinitely. You never get so
- 21:31strong that there is no more room on the
- 21:32RDL. You can outgrow a lot of machines
- 21:35that they're they're machines that
- 21:37complement your strength training really
- 21:38well.
- 21:39>> Yeah. If you put two plates on a
- 21:41standing ab wheel, it's like
- 21:43>> you're good. You've completed abs.
- 21:45[laughter]
- 21:45>> You have enough ab strength to do any
- 21:47accomplishment in the world.
- 21:49>> Any lift that you could set your mind
- 21:51to, you're good. You just maintain abs
- 21:53at this point, right? But like, you
- 21:54know, at some point like, okay, I don't
- 21:55want to [ __ ] put more than like two
- 21:56plates on a gym pin on a stack. I'm not
- 21:59like, what are we doing at that point,
- 22:00right? So, like things that have
- 22:02infinite scaling, I always like have a
- 22:03lot of appeal. And like the more times I
- 22:05come back to something, the more I'm
- 22:07like, "All right, I can kind of put the
- 22:09label on this. This is central at least
- 22:10to my methodology. It fits in with my
- 22:13system clearly well. I should probably
- 22:16show for it a little bit extra if
- 22:17anything." And like ab Wheel is like in
- 22:20that like hall of fame with the good
- 22:22good technique RDL's.
- 22:25>> Yeah, I like you said, I just keep
- 22:27coming back to it. Like I've probably
- 22:28had at least two dozen phases of being
- 22:29abs. And I've never done that for any
- 22:31other ab motion.
- 22:32>> Leg raises are a big one for me, too. I
- 22:34always come back to those
- 22:36>> dumbbell bench too.
- 22:38>> Yes.
- 22:38>> Mhm.
- 22:38>> I always when whenever I have
- 22:40>> I'm so mad I can't do [ __ ] dumbbell
- 22:41bench.
- 22:42>> We don't have heavy enough dumbbells for
- 22:43me and Max to run those right now. So,
- 22:45we're kind of like doing various things
- 22:47to try to make up for it.
- 22:50>> Discussion is do we drive like an hour
- 22:51over to a town over that has heavy
- 22:52enough dumbbells to do a session in a
- 22:54week? Yeah, we're debating driving over
- 22:55to but Montana to get our hands on some
- 22:57heavier dumbbells because I legitimately
- 22:59think that like if you rotate the
- 23:00dumbbells and you row them in so you're
- 23:02doing an extended range press, a bigger
- 23:04range of motion than your regular press.
- 23:06I find it's a it's amazing because it's
- 23:08extended range work and also um
- 23:13this is a random point. Maybe you guys
- 23:14will think it's interesting. People will
- 23:16always discredit like they're like oh
- 23:17you know the proof that instability work
- 23:19doesn't work right? uh they say
- 23:21instability work is silly because you're
- 23:24just going to limit your force output.
- 23:25It it's just nonsense. It's the same
- 23:27reason you wouldn't stand on a Bosu
- 23:29ball. And it's like, well, yeah, if we
- 23:31take any good training variable to the
- 23:33highest it can go, it becomes shitty
- 23:34training.
- 23:35>> If I say lifting heavy is good. You're
- 23:37like, if you put so much weight on there
- 23:38you can't move it. It's actually bad
- 23:40training. Great point, bro. Like, okay,
- 23:42you proved it. Going heavy is bad,
- 23:44right? Um,
- 23:46I find that going just one slight
- 23:49deviation less stable, right? So, we
- 23:51just disconnect our hands. So, we add
- 23:52one more plane of movement for the
- 23:54dumbbells. It makes my negatives feel
- 23:57way more locked in on my bench press.
- 23:58Like my ability to control the bar path
- 24:00and find the right bar path every time.
- 24:02That seems to be a training effect
- 24:04independent of what the dumbbells do for
- 24:06my pecs. Um, so it's like, sure, if you
- 24:09take anything and you take it too far,
- 24:11it's useless, right? Like people used to
- 24:13say, well, if you just do like omega
- 24:15bands and chains to where it's like
- 24:16weightless at the bottom, yes, it's
- 24:18going to give you horrible carryover. It
- 24:20becomes a different lift. But if we used
- 24:22a modest amount of accommodating
- 24:24resistance, it's a decent variation to
- 24:26progress, right? Like the same thing is
- 24:28true of a lot of things. And like one
- 24:29deviation less stable work in dumbbells,
- 24:32[ __ ] so helpful for me. And it checks
- 24:35that box of extended range pressing,
- 24:36which I think is good for keeping your
- 24:38pecs healthy.
- 24:38>> Well, we've talked about for like
- 24:40especially like beginners, right?
- 24:41Building up the pec is like you're just
- 24:43trying to speedrun that. Yeah, that's
- 24:44usually the limiting factor of an early
- 24:45bench. Speaking of [ __ ] waves, right?
- 24:48Oh my god. The thing I've learned is
- 24:50like just by coaching a rat pack, anyone
- 24:52who is benching 300 lb should just be
- 24:54constantly spamming dumbbell bench.
- 24:56>> Yeah. 300. Are you using 300 lb as an
- 24:59example of a weak bench presser?
- 25:00>> No, that's just the average strength of
- 25:02my lifters.
- 25:03>> Okay. I was going to say what what a
- 25:04[ __ ] Am I right, guys? [laughter]
- 25:06>> Says Sam, who benched 300 in like two
- 25:09months of bench pressing. That shook
- 25:11took me 4 years.
- 25:12>> Yeah. And I realized that I'm naturally
- 25:14gifted at it. So I wouldn't call someone
- 25:15weak for doing it. Like you
- 25:16>> I earned it cuz it took me four [ __ ]
- 25:18years to batch 300.
- 25:20>> He was a pre-teen.
- 25:21>> I was a teen.
- 25:22>> He was a full teen.
- 25:23>> You started as a pre-teen.
- 25:25>> I started early.
- 25:26>> You started as a pre back. I HAD TO
- 25:28[ __ ] PULL MYSELF UP. I YOU WERE A
- 25:30CHILD and a morbidly obese one trying
- 25:33[laughter] to bench 300. Um but uh my my
- 25:36conclusion was I was like, "Man double
- 25:38veg is good." And so I kept giving
- 25:39people more dumbbell bench and I was
- 25:40like this shit's just continuing to be
- 25:42like it's just like an endless [ __ ]
- 25:44uh bench loop. Just do more dumbbell
- 25:46bench.
- 25:48>> So [ __ ]
- 25:48>> You have to do it right though.
- 25:50>> Yeah. If if you're not pulling your
- 25:51chest up and if you're if you're if
- 25:53you're twisting them in to like to cheat
- 25:54the ROM, it just feel like
- 25:56>> the ego lifting dumbbells is one of the
- 25:58worst ego like a lot of things. This
- 26:00makes Kirsten.
- 26:01>> You can ego lift a lot of things and it
- 26:02would still be really productive. Ego
- 26:04lifting your dumbbell bench is I like
- 26:07sometimes fun Instagram video. You
- 26:09better not be [ __ ] doing that in your
- 26:11training. Especially if your bench is
- 26:13not going up.
- 26:14>> Yeah, that's something that you're like
- 26:15big on is
- 26:16>> it's one of my biggest pet peeves cuz I
- 26:18hate seeing people have their bench
- 26:20stall out and they're working really
- 26:22hard and the only thing they're missing
- 26:25for that would make their bench start
- 26:26going up again is literally doing the
- 26:28last inch of range of motion. And
- 26:30sometimes for some people it's the last
- 26:32three inches of range of motion. They
- 26:33get so attached to like this is when I
- 26:35dumb that people like I I'm a 60s guy.
- 26:37And it's like if you stopped being a 60s
- 26:40guy, you would suddenly become a 300s
- 26:41guy.
- 26:42>> Yeah. Yeah. Like I'm sure part of this
- 26:43is just the perspective of like now I'm
- 26:46the strongest bench presser in any gym I
- 26:48would go to around here, right? So I
- 26:49don't really care. But like who cares so
- 26:51much your dumbbell benching if your main
- 26:53bench is going up? Like that's the one
- 26:54we brag about. So, it's like if if 50s
- 26:56is going to do you more good with this
- 26:59better tech and then you get to be like
- 27:02I bench 275 that sounds like it's a
- 27:05great tradeoff like Kirst I consider
- 27:07Kirst like I think Kirsten's bench
- 27:08coaching is immaculate right because
- 27:10you're a very good bench presser you've
- 27:11done a lot of it you benched 200 lb
- 27:13natty soon to be 225 going it's going
- 27:16really well right it's going insanely
- 27:18well actually for only benching twice a
- 27:20week
- 27:20>> but I think Kirsten both like took the
- 27:22very technical like side of skating and
- 27:26has like a very good understanding of
- 27:27like what someone needs to do to get
- 27:28better at bench press. And she's like,
- 27:30"You just need to do good dumbbell
- 27:32bench." And some people just it's a
- 27:34coordination problem and some people
- 27:35just will not [ __ ] do it.
- 27:37>> I was really like novelty maxing and be
- 27:39like, "We should get all these different
- 27:40angles in." And I'm like, "No, double
- 27:42bench is just the best. Maybe it is just
- 27:43the best bench accessory for like if
- 27:45you're like a like intermediate,
- 27:47beginner, low level, advance, do [ __ ]
- 27:49done."
- 27:50>> And you might have to take the weight
- 27:51way lower than you would even think
- 27:52would be productive.
- 27:53>> Yeah. Like you might have to cut that
- 27:55[ __ ] Like you might have to do like 30%
- 27:57of what you're doing if you're skipping
- 27:58a lot of range at the bottom.
- 28:00>> I uh I I feel like I've lost it now
- 28:03because obviously like I would say like
- 28:04I'm in a lowlevel elite lifter, right?
- 28:07Like I'm very good. I feel like I've
- 28:08been doing this for long enough that I'm
- 28:09like very like confident and just like I
- 28:11know like I my my place in the gym has
- 28:15been earned. Um I did not feel that way
- 28:17when I was earlier to listen. Speaking
- 28:18of Max elitist [ __ ] uh opinions, Max
- 28:21is always like, "They need to give me
- 28:23that [ __ ] rack, right?" [laughter]
- 28:25>> Honestly though, they do need to give
- 28:27him that [ __ ] rack.
- 28:28>> If there's one good bench and I'm doing
- 28:30500 TODAY [laughter] AND YOU'RE DOING
- 28:31ONE, YOU SHOULD give me that rack. Call
- 28:33me an [ __ ] I don't know.
- 28:35>> You're hitting the old Kurt Carowski. I
- 28:37throw my bag at home. FIVE MINUTES. I
- 28:40>> YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING? [laughter]
- 28:42>> NEXT WEEK'S INTRO has that clip in it.
- 28:44>> I'll put I'll put it in this next week
- 28:46is my intro. I'll put it like max at the
- 28:48bottom of the screen.
- 28:51>> It's about percentages, right? If it's
- 28:53your max, okay, I respect it.
- 28:55>> This guy's getting caught in 4K.
- 28:57[laughter]
- 28:57>> Give me the [ __ ] rack, you loser.
- 29:03>> Um, I was going to say I did not used to
- 29:06feel that way, right? Like when like I
- 29:07always I was very like insecure like I
- 29:09have to earn my place in the gym like
- 29:10like and whenever I was like at a new
- 29:12milestone I like constantly wanted to
- 29:15show off that like well no I'm this
- 29:16level of strength.
- 29:17>> Yes. You worked hard to get like I see
- 29:19that right like I want to show everyone
- 29:21that I'm a two-play adventure. I work my
- 29:23ass off to be in this like this uh
- 29:25level. So every session I need to show
- 29:27everybody that I am this level. And the
- 29:29idea of doing like embarrassing
- 29:30accessories was like admitting that I
- 29:32was like weak but like I could do way
- 29:33more or like not doing an insanely heavy
- 29:35leg press. It's like well I mean like
- 29:37there's an [ __ ] who's doing a
- 29:38thousand, right? Like if I do 600 it's
- 29:40going to look like he's stronger than
- 29:42me, right? And it's like you also could
- 29:43do a thousand.
- 29:45>> So and like and I get it cuz I did the
- 29:47exact same thing that I always wanted to
- 29:48do. Like I wanted to like display the
- 29:50fact that I was like but I'm better than
- 29:52you. [laughter]
- 29:53I think that there COULD BE LIKE I think
- 29:55I do think you know it's it's like the
- 29:59more appeal to the the people watching
- 30:01thing to say is like always just like
- 30:03we're all on the we're all just working
- 30:05on our own thing, right? And it's like
- 30:07that doesn't necess that mentality
- 30:08doesn't always mesh with competitive
- 30:10athletics and that's fine. Um but I
- 30:12always think I always thought that like
- 30:13back then that that mindset being more
- 30:15pervasive when we were young. It
- 30:17obviously it's got a lot of downsides to
- 30:19like when you and I didn't feel like we
- 30:21deserved the rack if there was someone
- 30:22stronger than us who needed the rack,
- 30:24right? Or we didn't like hadn't earned
- 30:26our place in the gym.
- 30:27>> I'm 60% joking about that by the way.
- 30:30>> 50
- 30:31He's like 50/50.
- 30:33>> That doesn't
- 30:34>> I have to I have to be I have to be at
- 30:36750 plus that session for me to really
- 30:38be like take your bar. I'm going to
- 30:39throw it over the [laughter] rack. I'm
- 30:40taking that [ __ ] I'm going to push you
- 30:42over.
- 30:43>> Ali, you are a nice guy. I am not a man
- 30:45you can talk to [laughter] this. Uh but
- 30:48like I don't know I I feel like there
- 30:49were positives, right? Like I'm very
- 30:52empathetic because uh I am empathetic
- 30:55that it was like significantly worse for
- 30:57women, but like dudes I was like well I
- 30:59am a little twink. I'm I need to [ __ ]
- 31:03work my ass off to be not little skinny
- 31:06twink guy.
- 31:06>> Can I have the rack please? [laughter]
- 31:09>> Right. But like I I don't know. I I felt
- 31:11like in some ways this is like this
- 31:13comes off as like [ __ ] every guy
- 31:15who's like retiring who's starting a
- 31:17podcast back in my era. [ __ ] I hate
- 31:19that [ __ ] I'm I hope it doesn't sound
- 31:21like that. A podcast of 20-year-olds
- 31:23talks about back in our era [laughter]
- 31:24what to be like. But yeah, I just think
- 31:28like 10 years ago that like it was just
- 31:30a little bit more of a pervasive
- 31:31culture. There were a bunch of downsides
- 31:34to like people were just kind of
- 31:35[ __ ] Uh people thought if they
- 31:37were strong you could just be an [ __ ]
- 31:39when no one cares about how strong I
- 31:41used to have aura is so funny.
- 31:42>> Oh being strong and just like [ __ ]
- 31:45dick.
- 31:46>> Who uh I don't know if I should say his
- 31:48name. Uh the guy who had
- 31:49>> don't I don't know who this is but just
- 31:50HOW ABOUT WE DON'T MITCH Hooper did
- 31:53this. [laughter]
- 31:55>> Stop. Stop.
- 31:57>> Every time Every time you do this if we
- 31:59do this too often our fans start getting
- 32:01really negative really quickly. This is
- 32:03a positivity podcast. Uh video guy doing
- 32:05a hack squats and he like yells at this
- 32:06dude like get the [ __ ] out of the way.
- 32:08[laughter]
- 32:09Um
- 32:10>> oh guy.
- 32:10>> Yeah, it was guy. Uh and I remember he
- 32:12was like baffled but I be like damn,
- 32:13bro. Why is everyone being so so like
- 32:15they don't like this? And I remember you
- 32:17were like dude it to makes 100% sense
- 32:19why he's so shocked cuz that kind of was
- 32:21like
- 32:21>> that was his persona. Like his whole
- 32:23career he was patted on the back for
- 32:24being Mr. Hardcore Intensity. Like that
- 32:27guy being that guy was something that
- 32:28got him praise.
- 32:29>> Yeah. Like 2016 was like oh I'm showing
- 32:31him the ropes of the gym. Like I was
- 32:33giving him [ __ ] but also like like
- 32:34that's what the that's what the alpha
- 32:36the gym does. He puts him in [laughter]
- 32:37his place. Like
- 32:38>> Yeah. And like he was like shocked that
- 32:40suddenly that's not considered cool.
- 32:42>> Yeah.
- 32:42>> Like it really like you could tell it
- 32:43was like a [ __ ] like what the world
- 32:45has changed kind of thing. But I don't
- 32:47know. I always thought there was like
- 32:48some like
- 32:49>> I'm going to try to learn. Obviously we
- 32:51met guys who were better lifters than us
- 32:53who were wrong about a bunch of things,
- 32:55but like I would always try to learn
- 32:56from them. And sometimes that was
- 32:58mistaken, but I would always try because
- 33:00I'm like, you are better than me at
- 33:01this. Like, you are I was very open to
- 33:04the idea that like I wasn't just like,
- 33:05well, I'm natty, so I'm not going to
- 33:07listen to this guy. I was like, well,
- 33:08he's clearly better at lifting weights
- 33:09than me past that. And so I'd always
- 33:11listen and like sometimes it was
- 33:12mistaken, but I always felt like there
- 33:13was some benefit to that.
- 33:17>> Yeah. I like something y pendulum,
- 33:19right? And like we're talking about like
- 33:21we're we're not in the might makes right
- 33:22era. the whole just like I I own Bench
- 33:24you so you don't have to listen to me
- 33:25and be like [ __ ] you you idiot. Did I
- 33:27tell the story about how uh uh Nathan
- 33:30Payton, the guy who's like the
- 33:32nutritionist for a bunch of the World's
- 33:33Guys, was like on like the only
- 33:34strongman forum at the time, telling
- 33:36people that like he was doing Travis
- 33:38Ormmy's nutrition. And he was like,
- 33:39"Yeah, guys, you should eat some just
- 33:41like chicken and rice and broccoli
- 33:42meals. It's like a good meal."
- 33:43Bodybuilders put on a lot of muscle by
- 33:45like trying to keep their digestion
- 33:46good, right? And everybody on the forum
- 33:48was like, "You little dumb [ __ ] You
- 33:51don't know what you're talking about.
- 33:52That doesn't even make any sense. You
- 33:53should eat pizza, you dumb fuck." And
- 33:55then one day Derek Poundstone hopped on
- 33:57the forum and was like, "Oh, I eat
- 33:59chicken and rice all the time." Like I
- 34:00eat like a bodybuilder. And then
- 34:01suddenly everybody was like, "Okay, well
- 34:03maybe maybe we should do this."
- 34:04>> Well, to be a big guy, you need to eat
- 34:06big guy food to be big. [laughter]
- 34:09>> That story was like cracking the other
- 34:11like that is like the epitome of the
- 34:12forum days is just like some guy who's
- 34:14right. He's a smart guy who's like just
- 34:16been observing and he's like, "I think
- 34:17this is good." And everybody's like,
- 34:18"Shut the [ __ ] up, you little bitch."
- 34:21And then big guy says this same thing.
- 34:22Like this guy's a smart guy. This is
- 34:24really insightful actually. You know,
- 34:26that's actually more hardcore is to like
- 34:27have a dialed diet and still eat that
- 34:28quantity.
- 34:29>> Now that you think about it, it is
- 34:30actually more hardcore than eating
- 34:31pizza.
- 34:32>> Makes sense to have better
- 34:32micronutrients going into [laughter]
- 34:35that is cracking me up. And then the
- 34:37last one I have in my notes is man boys.
- 34:39Uh also was that thing that me crashing
- 34:41out about that old multiply bench guy.
- 34:43That's fine to leave in, right?
- 34:45>> Yeah, probably.
- 34:45>> Yeah.
- 34:46>> I don't I just got so Dennis is a Dennis
- 34:48is my friend and is a nice guy and like
- 34:50it's just like oh a [ __ ] fantastic
- 34:53bench presser talking someone talking
- 34:55down to him about bench press [ __ ]
- 34:58crazy w really wound me up but uh we got
- 35:00to figure out like vlog format videos
- 35:02boys we've done some I thought they were
- 35:04decent they didn't do big views but we
- 35:06got to figure it out so that way uh we
- 35:08could be the next trend twins and be
- 35:09extremely rich
- 35:10>> I was thinking Fourth of July we go hit
- 35:12golf balls shoot guns and do deadlifts
- 35:14>> that's smart we just really directly
- 35:16Copy the trend twins.
- 35:17>> They should sponsor us.
- 35:19>> Feral subs.
- 35:20>> Listen, we might be fat and ugly, but we
- 35:22are stronger.
- 35:23>> Feral subs, please.
- 35:24>> The strong the strongest brothers.
- 35:26>> We're We're going to do a We're don't
- 35:28order the boys to harass them. We get a
- 35:30sponsorship. [laughter]
- 35:32>> Sick the [ __ ] dogs on them.
- 35:33>> Yo, large lads harassment until we get a
- 35:36contract.
- 35:38>> I'm just saying.
- 35:39>> Yeah, it's harder now that we all train
- 35:40together for me to film you guys vlog
- 35:43style.
- 35:44We went to it and it was immediately
- 35:46stressful.
- 35:46>> It was a very difficult session for me
- 35:48even though I think it was a it was a
- 35:49delo session for me and I still was like
- 35:51what's going on?
- 35:53>> Not exactly the uh the multitasking CEO
- 35:55>> but we'll figure it out.
- 35:57>> All right. So here I've got a new
- 35:58segment to introduce.
- 36:00>> It's awesome.
- 36:00>> It's the it's the my wonderful
- 36:03girlfriend Kirsten talks segment.
- 36:05>> Kirsten, five minutes on the clock. No
- 36:07one else is going to talk.
- 36:08>> Chris, do you got anything you've been
- 36:09thinking about?
- 36:10>> Well, that dumbbell bench thing I was
- 36:11thinking about, but I got to talk about
- 36:12it earlier. It segued really nicely. So,
- 36:14I didn't just have to be negative and be
- 36:15like, "Please guys, please do your
- 36:18dumbbell bench to depth for the love
- 36:19[laughter] of God."
- 36:21>> Yeah, cuz I Well, for a while I was
- 36:22saying like anything that lets you get
- 36:24like a big stretch on your pecs, like a
- 36:25greater range of motion than your
- 36:26regular bench, pause, drive out. Like I
- 36:30was kind of pitching that they were like
- 36:31very interchangeable, but man, every
- 36:33time I re- rotate dumbbells into that
- 36:34spot, deep dips work pretty well.
- 36:37>> Or if you're below a certain strength
- 36:38level, like push-ups will work really
- 36:39well. Uh the honestly deficit push-ups.
- 36:43>> A lot of things work really well. I
- 36:44think deficit push-ups are great if
- 36:45you're a lower level strength guy. Uh
- 36:47rat pack all have deficit push-ups.
- 36:48Everyone's getting deficit push-ups,
- 36:50too.
- 36:50>> Yeah, deficit push-ups.
- 36:50>> Especially if you're a home gym guy,
- 36:52you're getting [ __ ] deficit push-ups.
- 36:53>> Deficit push-ups and deep dips. If you
- 36:55don't have dumbbells, those work really
- 36:56well. But like dumb every time I come
- 36:58back, like it's the same thing. Every
- 36:59time I come back to dumbbells, I'm like,
- 37:01"Oh, these are not exactly equal for
- 37:03what they do for my bench press." And I
- 37:05see it enough with my clients as well.
- 37:07>> I think deep dips are just as good.
- 37:08They're just harder. They're also a
- 37:10little different. I think the deep dips
- 37:12are good for reinforcing not flattening
- 37:15out your arch as you press. Like if
- 37:16you're someone who presses into your
- 37:17shoulders and you're like straining at
- 37:19lockout and it doesn't feel like your
- 37:20triceps are what straining, it's your
- 37:21shoulders. You've kind of punched
- 37:23yourself out of your arch too much. And
- 37:25I think deep dips keep that get that
- 37:27deep stretch uh pec strength and also
- 37:29reinforce keeping the press.
- 37:30>> This didn't work at all for me.
- 37:31[laughter]
- 37:33>> It did help
- 37:35>> working the dips.
- 37:36>> I still flat out just as much.
- 37:37>> Not as bad. Okay, cool.
- 37:39>> You press into your shoulders.
- 37:40>> Trick him into complimenting. [laughter]
- 37:41You press into your shoulders, idiot.
- 37:44>> Go ahead and talk. OH, YEAH. YEAH. YEAH.
- 37:47YEAH. YEAH.
- 37:48>> WE'VE been talking uh a lot about the
- 37:50nuances of this can. If this is boring,
- 37:52we can skip it. Of where your wrist goes
- 37:54when you're benching because we've
- 37:55talked about how it's a valid strategy
- 37:57for some people who let their wrist come
- 37:59back as a way to reduce the range of
- 38:00motion.
- 38:01>> Well, so everybody has the wrist back at
- 38:03the end of the day.
- 38:03>> Coming back as you come down.
- 38:05>> Yeah. Some people have a dyn Have you
- 38:06seen more people have like a dynamic
- 38:08wristband now, Max?
- 38:10>> I don't like it at all.
- 38:12>> Well, cuz that's [laughter] something.
- 38:13>> It clearly works. It clearly I'm not
- 38:14disagreeing that it clearly works. God
- 38:16damn it. I don't like it at all.
- 38:17>> Yeah. I don't think I'll ever tell a
- 38:18client to do that and I might have them
- 38:20tell me. That's a very advanced
- 38:22technique that like if someone's telling
- 38:24me that's what they're doing, I'm going
- 38:25to be like, "No, it's not. Your wrists
- 38:27are clearly just [ __ ] buckling."
- 38:29>> Yeah. So, full clarity, your everybody's
- 38:31wrist is back, but some people put it
- 38:32really low in their palm so it's right
- 38:34above the joint. But some people put the
- 38:36wrist back that same way, but put it
- 38:37higher in the hand.
- 38:38>> That's what I'm doing.
- 38:40>> Yeah, it looks like [ __ ] when you do it.
- 38:42[laughter]
- 38:44>> I thought that was interesting because I
- 38:45never focused on that when I was
- 38:47benching until you guys started talking
- 38:49about it being a cue for you to not let
- 38:51it come back as you come down. And then
- 38:53I started queuing that in my bench and
- 38:54that's been helpful. Obviously, that's a
- 38:55super niche queue, but I've been really
- 38:57That's like also just kind of
- 38:59reinforcing your wrist position stuff.
- 39:00It's been good.
- 39:01>> Kirsten's bench is just a better version
- 39:03of mine.
- 39:05Yeah,
- 39:05>> because like I I like to think I like to
- 39:08think I'm maybe a little bit technically
- 39:10further down the line than Kirsten, but
- 39:12I've from bulking up to [ __ ] 270,
- 39:15I've lost so many like little areas of
- 39:17mobility.
- 39:17>> Your T-spine just does not [ __ ] want
- 39:19to open.
- 39:20>> My T-spine is not [ __ ] bending right
- 39:22now. I think the I think the road to 880
- 39:24deadlift, like all of the midback work I
- 39:26was doing that made me like really good
- 39:27at rounding my upper back has made it
- 39:29really hard to get really nice
- 39:31extension. like I'm not getting that
- 39:34upper thoracic extension that's like the
- 39:36most important part of arching for a
- 39:38bench press. Uh and it just will not I'm
- 39:40like [ __ ] cranking it in every
- 39:42stretch and it won't even start to bend.
- 39:44Like god [ __ ] damn. I really
- 39:45reinforce that. So I watch Kirsten's
- 39:47bench and I'm like it's everything that
- 39:49I taught her but then done without the
- 39:51mobility restrictions of being an
- 39:53[laughter] 88260 man. Yeah. Because I I
- 39:56feel like your bench looks like you're
- 39:58bleeding force less than Kurtson's. Like
- 39:59it's just like by proxy of doing 15
- 40:01years of bench pressing or whatever,
- 40:02right? Like you've just done so much
- 40:04that it looks like it looks like every
- 40:05ounce of effort is going into the bar,
- 40:07right? Like a very like looks so [ __ ]
- 40:09fluid and like it looks like
- 40:10everything's transferring into the bar.
- 40:11>> Yeah, cuz Kirsten's looks like mine used
- 40:13to where she very visibly bleeds forced
- 40:15at the wrist, but I don't bleed force at
- 40:17the wrist anymore. Ever.
- 40:19>> Um
- 40:20>> and like sometimes I think Kurt's leg
- 40:21drive is like maybe like not as
- 40:22>> well. I think that's but it's just I
- 40:24think the only difference right is like
- 40:25I think Kirstson's bench is really
- 40:26really like I think it's as good as mine
- 40:28technically to be honest as much as I
- 40:29hate to admit it.
- 40:29>> I was going to say if you take a
- 40:30screenshot of any position of Curts it's
- 40:32so fundamentally sound.
- 40:33>> Yeah the the the thoracic arch is higher
- 40:36in quality. Uh, I've got a hot day.
- 40:39[laughter]
- 40:40The uh the thoracic arch is higher in
- 40:42quality and also I she lacks enough pec
- 40:46development to be really confident off
- 40:48the chest because Kirsten's bench is
- 40:50actually slightly she can do a really
- 40:51nice soft touch but her grip is like
- 40:53very moderate width and usually moderate
- 40:54width people are a little bit better
- 40:56with a slight sink so they can transfer
- 40:58their leg drive into the bar but she's
- 41:00so scared to sink it because she's not
- 41:02that like not developed enough in the
- 41:04pecs.
- 41:04>> My pecs are like ever so slightly
- 41:06behind.
- 41:07>> Yep. The pecs are I would say even a
- 41:08little bit more than ever so slightly
- 41:09for your bench to be like to feel the
- 41:11way you'd want it to feel. It's like
- 41:12>> to sneak that one in there. [laughter]
- 41:14>> Bench is the most fun when my pecs are
- 41:16ahead.
- 41:17>> The pecs and the wrists are kind of like
- 41:18the only areas for improvement right
- 41:20now. I I think your bench is immaculate.
- 41:23>> What's been pissing you off?
- 41:24>> Oh, don't been pissing me off.
- 41:27[laughter] Let's see. That's a good
- 41:28question. We might have to come back
- 41:30around to that. I need to brainstorm cuz
- 41:31again the I've just been ruminating
- 41:33about the [ __ ] dumbbell bench thing
- 41:34for like the last three days. So, if you
- 41:36ask me another question, I'm just going
- 41:37to talk about dumbbell bench again.
- 41:38[laughter]
- 41:39>> I've been ruminating.
- 41:40>> What's uh what's what's your topic, big
- 41:43man?
- 41:43>> Uh big guy. We've we [laughter]
- 41:48bro one of the old men at Costco. What
- 41:49the [ __ ] That's what they all call me.
- 41:51>> Big guy.
- 41:51>> Yeah, they all come up and THEY GRAB MY
- 41:53SHOULDERS. [laughter]
- 41:54THIS IS NOT about that. Um I have had
- 41:56that happen before, but that was not
- 41:58this trip.
- 41:59>> Dude, now that you're looking less
- 42:00youthful, you're getting molested
- 42:02significantly less. Dude, I was having
- 42:04people grab me when I was a teenager.
- 42:07>> Max would just like
- 42:09full stop get sexually assaulted at the
- 42:12gym like once a month.
- 42:13>> It's crazy stuff. [laughter]
- 42:15>> It was crazy.
- 42:16>> IT'S THE DOWNSIDES OF THE CUTE FEATURES,
- 42:18you know?
- 42:19>> I It's the It is. It's the cute features
- 42:21that must have been what was attracting
- 42:22them to you cuz like you would just be
- 42:24like You'd come back over from a bench
- 42:26at the Reton YMCA, you'd be like, "Dude,
- 42:28that guy just like fully groped MY
- 42:30TITTIES. [laughter]
- 42:33THAT WAS CRAZY.
- 42:34>> AND I like come up and like grab my
- 42:36shoulders like like hold my neck and I
- 42:38was like [laughter]
- 42:39>> the guy that the guy that like grabbed
- 42:41your like he was inspecting your traps
- 42:43but like just like choked you was crazy.
- 42:45And he would Max would come back over to
- 42:46me. He's like the guy just like [ __ ]
- 42:48grabbed my neck. And I'd be like, I was
- 42:49talking TO YOU GUYS AND HE CAME
- 42:50[laughter] UP AND I was like I was like,
- 42:52"Oh, this is going to be like my dad or
- 42:54someone who judges me.
- 42:57[clears throat]
- 42:58It's not my dad." [laughter]
- 43:01And not exactly my finest big brother
- 43:04moment either. I didn't defend Max at
- 43:05all. I was like, "Damn, that's crazy,
- 43:06bro. Hurry up and do your [ __ ] sad."
- 43:08I think he went like, "Damn, bro.
- 43:09[laughter] You You let him mo you." And
- 43:11I was like, "That was not okay. Bad
- 43:14touch." [laughter]
- 43:18OH, I think he went like, "Do you know
- 43:20that guy?" I WAS LIKE, "NO, WHAT?"
- 43:22[laughter]
- 43:22>> OH, cuz he he like he knew me from
- 43:24Instagram
- 43:26>> and and was like, "Oh, yeah." You know,
- 43:28>> hey, rat packag sneak up behind him and
- 43:31grab. [laughter]
- 43:32>> Clearly, I don't have a good defense
- 43:34system. I'M NOT LIKE TURNING AROUND and
- 43:36getting violent. Go like [laughter] like
- 43:39>> uh Don't do that to me, by the way.
- 43:42>> Also, don't do that to anyone that don't
- 43:44do that to anyone actually. So that's
- 43:46good advice. [laughter] Don't trust me.
- 43:48>> I have a I don't know if it's a good or
- 43:51a bad reflex. Every time someone does
- 43:53that to me, like when my when I was when
- 43:55I was younger, dad did that to me, like
- 43:57hid behind a horn, like popped out and I
- 43:59uh chipped one of his teeth.
- 44:02>> That's what you got to do.
- 44:03>> I just was immediately throwing hands.
- 44:05>> He probably never did it again.
- 44:06>> That instinct has never gone away. And
- 44:08it leads to some bad optics. Like Kirst
- 44:10like peekab-oo. I'LL BE LIKE, "HI,
- 44:13>> I
- 44:14DON'T KNOW WHO THIS IS." [laughter]
- 44:19>> YEAH, but make sure you sneak up behind
- 44:21Max and Tickle. [laughter]
- 44:24>> Don't do it.
- 44:26>> Say we have to [ __ ] edit something.
- 44:28[ __ ] you.
- 44:28>> He won't do anything about it.
- 44:30>> THIS IS CRAZY. LIKE, YO, MY BROTHER'S A
- 44:32[ __ ] FRESH [laughter] TARGET.
- 44:34>> I'm just saying
- 44:35>> he FREEZES IN PRESSURE, BOYS. WHAT WAS
- 44:37your He does He does freeze under
- 44:39pressure. [laughter]
- 44:40That's why my car crash went so well cuz
- 44:42I WAS LIKE, "OH SHIT."
- 44:43>> It gives if you're a freezer to pressure
- 44:45guy, you do have like the the little
- 44:47potential for some aura because you
- 44:49could fully process what's going on
- 44:51while you're frozen. So then you never
- 44:52have like a embarrassing freak out.
- 44:54>> It's true.
- 44:55>> I freeze and then I embarrassing freak
- 44:57out.
- 44:58>> That's That's the worst of both
- 44:59[laughter] the worst of both worlds.
- 45:05>> That is true. You take so long to react
- 45:07to things and then you still [laughter]
- 45:09>> Yeah, you got the worst freeze mechanic
- 45:12I've ever seen.
- 45:12>> Yeah, but then you think that I don't
- 45:14think your jokes are funny, but I'm just
- 45:15thinking about them. [laughter]
- 45:17>> It's that they were so complicated.
- 45:18>> They were so I had to think about
- 45:19>> they were so five dimensional. I was
- 45:21going to say uh one of the things my
- 45:23training that I feel like has been
- 45:24really going very very well uh is we
- 45:27have been having more like concrete
- 45:29targets and Sam Sam uh has been trying
- 45:32to strike a balance of both having like
- 45:34uh things that are a little more
- 45:35autoregulated as I get better. Um but
- 45:38having things I'm like actively excited
- 45:39for more often is been really really
- 45:42productive for me. Like having sets or
- 45:43reps or like even just like having a
- 45:45single that I'm a little bit more scared
- 45:47of than usual has been like doing me so
- 45:49[ __ ] good.
- 45:50>> Yeah. Yeah, like I think on each SL
- 45:51right now I'm kind of working off of the
- 45:53paradigm that like at least once a month
- 45:56where because we're running four-week
- 45:57waves, so it's a month, but like at
- 45:58least once every wave, there should be
- 46:00something that worries you a little bit
- 46:02on each lift.
- 46:02>> And my recovery has been locked in
- 46:04because I've been like, "Fuck, dude.
- 46:05>> You got to get ready for 750 and then
- 46:07750 two days from now again." Like,
- 46:09>> yeah, that's I think that's the danger
- 46:10of like all submax work is it's all
- 46:12submax. So there's nothing to like
- 46:14there's nothing to g-check you for your
- 46:15bedtime. there's nothing that's gonna
- 46:16like big style like g-ch checkck you on
- 46:18your food and you can just keep coasting
- 46:20but you're not going to adapt to that
- 46:22submax work the way you're supposed to
- 46:24because you're being a bum with your
- 46:25accessories and so having something
- 46:26that's a little bit scary every month is
- 46:29lets you do all of your nice submax work
- 46:31but it also scares you into not being a
- 46:33bum because we've been so base building
- 46:36I don't have that many touches at 750 on
- 46:39squat like for someone who I like I you
- 46:40know like a I 820 is my best I think I'm
- 46:43a roughly an 830 squatter right now
- 46:45Right.
- 46:45>> 8:35 probably.
- 46:46>> Um, so it's like like that's a 85 lb
- 46:48difference, right? My number of lifetime
- 46:50reps at 750 is very low. And so I'm
- 46:52still like, oh [ __ ] this is so
- 46:53[laughter] scary. I've only done this a
- 46:55handful of times.
- 46:56>> It's probably seven.
- 46:58>> God,
- 46:58>> seven or eight.
- 46:59>> Yeah, something like something like
- 47:01that.
- 47:01>> I'm pretty good. I'm pretty good with
- 47:02these numbers. I shocked Kirst the other
- 47:04day because she was like trying to
- 47:04figure out how many times she had gone
- 47:06above like 185 and it's like 20 plus,
- 47:10right? So, a lot more like practice
- 47:11above that margin, whereas like like you
- 47:13said, there's a certain margin at which
- 47:14you have very limited practice above on
- 47:16the squat and the deadlift.
- 47:18>> Yeah. Yeah. Like 770 is really the
- 47:19number on deadlift. And I'm like I have
- 47:20like like eight lifetime reps. Um
- 47:23>> and so like I with us touching that uh
- 47:26twice a week for six of the eight weeks
- 47:29of prep, I I'm like, "Holy [ __ ] my
- 47:31recovery NEEDS TO BE LOCKED IN.
- 47:33[laughter] Every week I'm doing
- 47:34something scary." And like obviously I'm
- 47:35not saying do 95% every week on your
- 47:37training to motivate you. That's
- 47:39probably not the best piece of advice,
- 47:40but having something that you're
- 47:41actively excited of or like maybe a
- 47:43little bit scared of, as long as you
- 47:44don't have like the mentality of like,
- 47:45oh, if I fail, I'm demoralized. Like I
- 47:48missed my rep PR uh yesterday or two
- 47:49days ago on bench and I was like, ah,
- 47:51didn't really deserve that.
- 47:53>> Yeah.
- 47:54>> Um, but like having those like more
- 47:56concrete things cuz I feel like
- 47:57sometimes I'll be like, "Oh, long-term
- 47:59goals are awesome because they're going
- 48:00to keep me like [ __ ] focused." And
- 48:02that's true. It's like it's good. They
- 48:03do keep me like I don't get like
- 48:05postmeat blues and stuff cuz I always
- 48:06have like longer term goals. Uh, but
- 48:08short-term ones, they really keep you
- 48:10like I feel like they like keep me
- 48:11locked into like reminding myself of uh
- 48:14like stay my good variables, right? Like
- 48:16it's it's hard to be like, "Oh, in the
- 48:17six months I'm going to be going for
- 48:18something awesome."
- 48:19>> Yeah.
- 48:19>> My food doesn't really feel like it
- 48:20matters that much. But if in 3 days from
- 48:22now I'm like I'm going to kind of send
- 48:23it for a [ __ ] rep PR. Like even if
- 48:25it's a little bit stupid, like having
- 48:27that as a like a reinforcement like my
- 48:29variables need to be good otherwise my
- 48:31odds at getting this are even worse.
- 48:32>> Yeah. It's what's my boy Matt Venom
- 48:35mentioned was like a lot of the time
- 48:37programming specifics [laughter] are
- 48:38like
- 48:39>> programming spec same Sam he was like
- 48:41you know Matt Venet is like the man of
- 48:43the man in the world of power in the
- 48:44world like he's having his moment that's
- 48:47just you bro [laughter]
- 48:49listen why are you always hating on the
- 48:51>> I walked in here and you were on the
- 48:53couch in the dark and I looked over and
- 48:54you're just like watching Mad Than on
- 48:55your phone
- 48:56>> this is not even true [laughter]
- 49:00>> all right well moving on right he was
- 49:02just saying like programming specifics
- 49:03maybe a little bit overrated sometimes
- 49:05and like the mental side of the sport is
- 49:06really big. But the mental sport ties
- 49:08into the programming, right? So it's
- 49:10like having things that make you a
- 49:11little bit nervous. You have to know
- 49:12your own dispositions though because
- 49:14you'll like rules of thumb aren't
- 49:17universal for anybody, but you'll but
- 49:18they can be like the most important
- 49:20thing for your training. I have always
- 49:22aired on the side of being conservative
- 49:23when I'm estimating where I'm at because
- 49:25I think it's more dangerous to
- 49:27overestimate where you're at than under.
- 49:28So I always air on the I've got a range.
- 49:30I pick the bottom end of the range and
- 49:31that's always my estimate of where I'm
- 49:32at.
- 49:33>> It leads to me kind of chronically being
- 49:35slightly underestimating where I'm at.
- 49:36Yep.
- 49:37>> Uh and people kind of give me a hard
- 49:38time like you thought this would take. I
- 49:39was like I had the idea that I could get
- 49:41this done but I always go with the
- 49:43low-end estimate there.
- 49:44>> There's always like a realistic estimate
- 49:46and then a back of the mind like
- 49:48>> I could I maybe could and that's the top
- 49:50end, right? And like realistically,
- 49:51you're somewhere in the middle. And
- 49:52because I always go with this bottom
- 49:54end, my training, I should always have a
- 49:56set that I have some doubt about. Like
- 49:58almost on a weekly basis, I should have
- 50:00something that puts a little bit of
- 50:01doubt into my mind.
- 50:03>> Little bit of fear.
- 50:03>> Like a Yeah. Not even like fear, right?
- 50:05But like I should be like, I'm not sure
- 50:07I can do that and I should attempt it
- 50:09because that's my calibration. Versus
- 50:11guys who like will do like an RP10 rep
- 50:13like easy, right? You tell those guys
- 50:16their magical rule of thumb is like
- 50:18they're the you tell them save it for
- 50:20the platform, save it for the platform.
- 50:22They're gonna be wrong. They're gonna
- 50:23like it be like you tell them always
- 50:24leave one in the tank in training. That
- 50:25way you've got that extra gear on meat
- 50:27day. It's like they're hitting RP10 all
- 50:29the time in training anyway. It's
- 50:31stopping them from the failed reps. But
- 50:33that becomes their like golden rule is
- 50:36save it for the platform. Save it for
- 50:37that platform. Always leave a little in
- 50:39the tank in training. and that be that
- 50:41smooths out their training versus for
- 50:43you and I it's always like get something
- 50:45in there that gets you a little bit
- 50:47worried and make sure that's kind of
- 50:49universally present. But it depends on
- 50:51like where your bias is as a lifter. Uh
- 50:54as our final question for the day, we
- 50:55have a fan submitted question where they
- 50:57were saying like how much of lifting
- 51:00weights is mental?
- 51:03I'm a yapaholic. I have an answer, but I
- 51:06I'll throw that to you guys
- 51:09>> a lot.
- 51:11>> Great answer. Would you like to expand
- 51:13on that?
- 51:13>> Uh, yes. [laughter]
- 51:19>> It feels rude cuz the people love
- 51:21hearing you talk and then we put you on
- 51:22the spot and you're [laughter]
- 51:25>> if you doubt yourself,
- 51:26>> sometimes you don't get it just cuz you
- 51:28doubted yourself.
- 51:28>> You had an experience like this?
- 51:30>> I did. I did. This happened to me
- 51:31[ __ ] yesterday. I'm really I'm
- 51:33getting back into squatting and
- 51:35squatting scares me. So, I unracked a
- 51:39weight and I was like, I'm going to put
- 51:41this back in the rack for a [laughter]
- 51:42second. And then I ended up being able
- 51:44to get it. But that's one of the biggest
- 51:45things that's why I went to bodybuilding
- 51:48from powerlifting is because those 1RM I
- 51:50never really figured out how to approach
- 51:53them properly. It's a mind. It was a
- 51:54purely mental
- 51:55>> pure mental thing where I was like I was
- 51:57getting stronger in the even like three
- 52:00to 12 rep range every single block, but
- 52:03it would get to that singles and doubles
- 52:05part and I would just fall apart. So
- 52:07that's kind of my biggest challenge
- 52:08right now, especially on squat and
- 52:10deadlift because I've
- 52:12>> bench is pretty sorted for I mean
- 52:13obviously you can always get better, but
- 52:15bench I'm pretty good about kind of
- 52:17where I'm at right now is trying to
- 52:18figure out I need some adrenaline but
- 52:20how do I approach that mentally without
- 52:23crumbling under pressure?
- 52:24>> Yeah. Like I think people find find
- 52:26their way into like a a system that
- 52:28works but it's tough and eventually
- 52:31people start looking for a way out like
- 52:32oh when I train with this guy I always
- 52:34get better and they eventually start
- 52:36looking for a reason a way out and
- 52:38that's like a big boxing thing is like
- 52:40you need to not be looking for the
- 52:42second you're looking for a way out you
- 52:43lose.
- 52:44>> So [clears throat] you need to build a
- 52:45psychology that you can sustain doing
- 52:48this hard thing indefinitely without
- 52:50eventually looking for a way out. I'll
- 52:52give people a program and it's like I'm
- 52:54like realistically man this is the
- 52:56amount of work you need to do to be
- 52:58progress. Like your goal is to move to
- 52:59the next level as a lifter. This is the
- 53:01amount of work you need to do. You're
- 53:02going to be a little bit more tired than
- 53:03you're used to. You need to get used to
- 53:05it. But some people never get used to it
- 53:07and they like kind of use up all of
- 53:08their motivation and then they start
- 53:09looking for a way out. It's like if you
- 53:10want to get to the next level, you need
- 53:12to be someone who gets comfortable with
- 53:14that amount of work without inevitably
- 53:16being for like a way out thing. Right.
- 53:18>> Yeah. cuz that would be like an example
- 53:20of somebody who would be on the opposite
- 53:21end of the spectrum of me as someone who
- 53:22loves lifting heavy and they always want
- 53:24to be putting like the pedal to the
- 53:26metal and hitting those like all out
- 53:28sets for them. the the mentality
- 53:30difficulty would be figuring out how to
- 53:32enjoy
- 53:33>> the hypertrophy phases because they
- 53:34don't get to show off, right? Or they
- 53:36don't get like the adrenaline like
- 53:37another mental part.
- 53:38>> You've had lifters that like struggle
- 53:40with like that's kind of the the
- 53:41interesting part about like periodized
- 53:43training is you can really isolate which
- 53:44parts you're good at, which ones you're
- 53:45bad. Like I crush hypertrophy and it's
- 53:47sustainable and I can do this forever. I
- 53:49crush strength, it's great, and then I
- 53:50freak the [ __ ] out and peak. Well, guess
- 53:52what? If you really want to get better,
- 53:54that's the one you need to get better
- 53:55at. But some people, they they crush the
- 53:56peak. They're looking forward to
- 53:58training. They love they like they their
- 53:59psychology under things that feel heavy
- 54:01is great and they will not put in base
- 54:03building work and it's like if you
- 54:04really want to get better you need to
- 54:05get over your aversion to base building
- 54:07work, right? And so it's like sometimes
- 54:09that could be really useful to see. What
- 54:10was what was your answer going to be?
- 54:12>> Um I was just say like lifting obviously
- 54:15it's like a physiological response,
- 54:16right? We're growing our muscles and
- 54:18we're adapting our CNS, right? Um, I
- 54:21feel like as I've gotten better, I have
- 54:24noticed more and more that like there is
- 54:26no just like I'm just going to like get
- 54:27the work done, right? Like I if I'm like
- 54:30miserable, right? Or like even just
- 54:32periods of my life that have been like
- 54:33bad, right? My lifting doesn't go well.
- 54:35Yeah. Like it's it's so much more than I
- 54:37think cuz I'm like just like like I got
- 54:39so into like the A to B like it's input
- 54:42output machine, right? I put in four
- 54:44sets of bench press. I put in my
- 54:45dumbbell bench. I put in my good meals
- 54:47and I put in good sleep and I just get
- 54:48awesome results, right? Like that's what
- 54:50the machine is, right? And but I keep
- 54:52seeing the fact that like
- 54:54>> especially with like us training
- 54:56together right now. There are like the
- 54:58the garden metaphor makes a lot more
- 55:00sense of like just like conditions and
- 55:01stuff grows and doesn't, right? Like me
- 55:02and you like there are movements that
- 55:03like we are progressing very differently
- 55:05at, right? And like we are
- 55:07>> very similar like shaped athletes in
- 55:09terms of like our conditions and stuff,
- 55:10right? and like just stuff tends to
- 55:12evolve in like different ways and that
- 55:14it just like kind of occurs naturally,
- 55:16right? Um, and having a more p like
- 55:19positive outlook and being more excited
- 55:20for training. It feels like very like
- 55:22wishy-washy intangible, but it clearly
- 55:24is so connected to how
- 55:26>> it's part of the good gu I think that's
- 55:27part of like I think that's part of the
- 55:28good garden environment is like
- 55:30>> both of the best meat preps I've ever
- 55:32had. I was so excited to train. Yes. And
- 55:34I'm like objectively it wasn't like the
- 55:36block wasn't that different. I never
- 55:38skip [ __ ] anything. I my sleep is
- 55:40always awesome and I eat literally the
- 55:41exact same thing every day. So I feel
- 55:43like I have a very controlled thing for
- 55:44like we don't like I'm so resistant to
- 55:46change especially back when I was a
- 55:48teenager I was so [ __ ] like saying
- 55:49don't [ __ ] change anything, right? So
- 55:51it's not like we were running like these
- 55:52like true like really meaningful
- 55:53constant experiments with changing
- 55:55stuff, right? Um but sometimes I'd have
- 55:57block like drastically different results
- 55:58even though essentially all of like your
- 56:00standard training variables are the
- 56:01exact same. Sometimes I was just like
- 56:03going in and like [ __ ] so much more
- 56:05excited. And like obviously there are
- 56:08tangible things that change from that,
- 56:09right? Like I'm walking more. I'm
- 56:10stretching more. I'm more conscious
- 56:12about like getting moving throughout the
- 56:13day is one of those things that like
- 56:14whenever I'm really excited about
- 56:16training, I just do it so much more
- 56:17durotically because in the back of my
- 56:18mind I'm like, I got 750 this weekend. I
- 56:20really want to [ __ ] dunk on that
- 56:21[ __ ] I want to spike that. I want a
- 56:22cool Instagram video. I'm a [ __ ]
- 56:24beast. Deadlift Max is back, right? I've
- 56:25been thinking that all [ __ ] week,
- 56:26dude. I'm I'm fired up for [laughter]
- 56:28those on the 4th of July, bro. USA
- 56:30freedom. I'm [ __ ] putting the tea in
- 56:32the [ __ ] ocean, you retards.
- 56:33[laughter] Sorry.
- 56:35>> Okay.
- 56:39>> So, mentality is important. [laughter]
- 56:42>> ATTACK the British. Sorry.
- 56:43[clears throat]
- 56:44>> Um, but yeah, like like having that like
- 56:46positive connection to training is so
- 56:48independently helpful in a way that like
- 56:49I've I don't give it as much credit as
- 56:51it like clearly deserves. And like the
- 56:53guys who I've seen like really succeed
- 56:55just seem to be like having a blast
- 56:56training, right? And like I'm pretty
- 56:58sure if you just like didn't like the
- 56:59system, it wouldn't work as well. Even
- 57:00if you were doing all of the exact
- 57:02things,
- 57:02>> that's what I'm saying is the psychology
- 57:03is part of the environment, right? Like
- 57:05the eating the right food is part of
- 57:07what creates the environment to adapt to
- 57:08the demands. Well, sleeping enough is
- 57:11part of what creates the like ability to
- 57:14make the adaptations. Being in the right
- 57:16me mental space seems to have a
- 57:19meaningful impact.
- 57:21>> And that's where it end.
- 57:22>> Wait, I didn't answer. [laughter]
- 57:25>> I planned an answer the whole time.
- 57:26>> WHAT THE [ __ ] WAS THAT?
- 57:28>> WHAT? WHAT WAS THAT? What was what
- 57:29>> you talking? [laughter]
- 57:31>> What was me talking?
- 57:32>> Was that not your answer?
- 57:33>> No, I was I was replying to what you
- 57:35said.
- 57:35>> Okay. What's your answer?
- 57:36>> So, I think when you start it's like all
- 57:38mental cuz you can push yourself way
- 57:39[ __ ] harder than you think, right?
- 57:41Yes. And like you could just get more
- 57:42reps by willpower, but then you get
- 57:44pretty good at that and you're like
- 57:45actually failing. You're like physically
- 57:47failing, right? And then it's like,
- 57:49okay, well, mental still matters quite a
- 57:50bit, but it becomes no longer in the
- 57:52micro. In the micro, it's just like
- 57:54mentally you could just [ __ ] do more
- 57:56reps. and the guy that mentally does the
- 57:58more reps gets the better results. But
- 58:00then once once you can push yourself to
- 58:02your limit, it's not that like you can
- 58:03get so hyped up that you could deadlift
- 58:05a thousand. No, you're going to [ __ ]
- 58:06fail that like there's technique to it,
- 58:08right?
- 58:08>> Have you ever heard of the mom lifting
- 58:09the mom?
- 58:11>> What if you [laughter]
- 58:13think about the baby, right? Like you
- 58:15No, you're going to like sure you can
- 58:17you can you can get a little bit better
- 58:18by extracting a little bit of extra
- 58:20strength by mastering adrenaline and
- 58:21hype. You can express a little bit more.
- 58:24But the difference video about that
- 58:25>> do you The difference between you that
- 58:27benches 200 and the you that benches 300
- 58:29is not your psychological state, but
- 58:32your ability to change your physiology
- 58:34and not look for a way out and your
- 58:36ability to be picking up little uh like
- 58:38nickels and dimes of progress all day
- 58:40with like habits. Um it no longer
- 58:43becomes like this set is all mental,
- 58:45right? Like once you get to a certain
- 58:46level, you're pretty dialed on that and
- 58:48it's no longer the case. But the
- 58:50long-term progression is still mental.
- 58:52Like keeping yourself checked into
- 58:53training and pushing hard and interested
- 58:55and curious about what to do to get
- 58:57better. Keeping yourself in that state
- 58:59is not something that happens that you
- 59:01passively accept. It's something you
- 59:02actively stoke to be in that right
- 59:05mentality and you need to keep yourself
- 59:07there because if you fall out of it,
- 59:09you'll start looking for a way out or
- 59:10you'll start going through the motions
- 59:12and you will like the ability to stay in
- 59:14the right mindset is everything. Thank
- 59:16you guys so much for watching. If you
- 59:18want more awesome lifting philosophy

- 59:22perhaps even a larger show.
