- 0:01an effective IEP meeting is dependent
- 0:04upon sound information communication and
- 0:07most importantly preparation preparation
- 0:10saves time prevents misunderstandings
- 0:13and conveys professionalism and
- 0:15confidence let's look at two separate
- 0:17scenarios displaying the dos and don'ts
- 0:19of IEP meetings first we'll start with
- 0:22the
- 0:26don'ts hey Colleen I just want to remind
- 0:28you about the IEP meeting today after
- 0:30school 2:30 see you there

- 1:05Jones um they said they'd be here at
- 1:072:30 and I know it's a little bit past
- 1:092:30 but they said they'd be here so so
- 1:12how long are we going to wait not very
- 1:14long hopefully you can

- 1:30here um we're missing the administrator
- 1:33and uh The Interpreter let me find out

- 1:41on yes I was just wondering if Miss
- 1:43Owens is coming to the IEP meeting also
- 1:47The Interpreter what's with that okay

- 1:51thanks well The Interpreter job didn't
- 1:54get picked up by the SubFinder so we
- 1:56don't have anybody and the administrator
- 1:58is in a meeting right now she said to go
- 2:00ahead though and she'll try to make it
- 2:02before the end of the
- 2:04meeting Greg since you speak Spanish
- 2:07could you interpret for us as we don't
- 2:09have anybody else sure
- 2:12yito should we go over the parent rights
- 2:14with them
- 2:15first I forgot the parent rights do you

- 3:27meeting is it no it's an I meeting um
- 3:30what room is the PLC meeting in that's
- 3:33in building 14 I I think it's 16 16 but
- 3:36my principal says try 14 then go to 16
- 3:39if it's not at 16 go to 15 then come
- 3:40back here okay um thanks sorry for the
- 3:51interruption so Mr Mrs Jones do you have
- 3:54any questions about what we discussed
- 3:55today to toas okay well I'll have you
- 3:58sign the IEP said for mey and we'll send
- 4:01a copy home

- 4:18hostile I was telling her I don't think
- 4:20that they were prepared for this meeting

- 4:26said about her that could be true I'm
- 4:28sure they've been
- 4:34now let's look at the dues of a
- 4:36well-prepared IEP
- 4:38meeting like all effective meetings
- 4:40preparing and informing key members in
- 4:43advance is

- 4:51just came by to remind you about the IEP
- 4:53meeting tomorrow yeah the one for Elijah
- 4:56yes for one at 2:30 and it's in the
- 4:58conference room I'll be since we're
- 5:00going to probably mainstream him for
- 5:02math those work samples you gave me will
- 5:05be very valuable and I'll give you a
- 5:07chance to talk about them with the
- 5:08parents tomorrow at the meeting oh
- 5:11that's good because I'm really excited
- 5:12about his progress and I want to share
- 5:14that with the parents I'm sure they'll
- 5:16be so excited too so all right well
- 5:18we'll see you tomorrow we'll see you
- 5:20then not sooner
- 5:21okay teamwork is key to the Student
- 5:25Success double check everything prior to
- 5:28the meeting people's attendance
- 5:30paperwork room location Etc communicate
- 5:34with general education teachers as to
- 5:36the purpose of the IEP meeting what
- 5:39kinds of work samples to bring and what
- 5:41their role will be at the meeting
- 5:43maintain a professional but friendly and
- 5:46focused environment for example greet
- 5:49people introduce everyone at the
- 5:51beginning of the meeting shake hands at
- 5:53the end of the
- 5:56meeting hi you guys come on in hi Janet

- 6:02are you doing hi Ryan Julia um you sit
- 6:06um right on the corner there because the
- 6:08parents are going to be at the end
- 6:10sounds great all right
- 6:12thanks anybody else here oh good the

- 6:29hi Mr and Mrs Jones come in nice to meet
- 6:32you nice to see you again that's right
- 6:35yes come on in we have a place for you

- 6:44here hello everybody hi thank you for
- 6:47coming today Mr and Mrs Jones we really
- 6:50appreciate your presence
- 6:57here the purpose of the meeting today is
- 6:59to um talk about uh reducing the number
- 7:03of minutes that Elijah is in special
- 7:05education math but before we do that I
- 7:08would like to offer you a copy of the
- 7:11parent rights uh this one is for Mr
- 7:14Jones and this one is in Spanish for Mrs
- 7:17Jones what we're going to do is we're
- 7:19going to introduce ourselves and tell
- 7:21you how we are involved in Elijah's life
- 7:24at school so I'll start I'm Mrs Clark
- 7:27and I'm the RSP special education
- 7:29teacher and right now I have him for
- 7:31language arts and
- 7:36math I'm Mr flowers I'm the school
- 7:40psychologist and I'm Janet flowers I'm
- 7:42the speech language pathologist here
- 7:44working with your
- 7:47son is Ry nap an
- 7:50interpreter and I'm Miss giry I'm
- 7:52Elijah's teacher Mr Elli physical
- 7:56education and I'm Mrs Owens I'm the
- 7:58administrator here on campus um we're
- 8:01going to hear from uh various people
- 8:03we'll start with Mr flowers on the
- 8:05testing that he
- 8:08did here's a copy of my report and this
- 8:11graph explains the report 100 average
- 8:13for standard score
- 8:169 she's wondering
- 8:19why and I've also been working with him
- 8:22here's a copy of my report and I also
- 8:25have a graph that shows a little bit
- 8:27about how he performed in relation to
- 8:29other children his same age and I wanted
- 8:31to just talk about how well Elijah is
- 8:34doing in math right now and I have some
- 8:35more examples to show you that he is at
- 8:38grade level working he's able to do his
- 8:41addition and subtraction your son is
- 8:43performing right now at grade level in
- 8:46all areas for physical education he's
- 8:48showing great uh teamwork skills and
- 8:50also even some leadership skills out on
- 8:52the field Mrs Jones we'll send a packet
- 8:55of materials home for you to work with
- 8:57Elijah we have them sign some forms if
- 9:00they want us to implement the IP as
- 9:02we've described it have them sign right
- 9:06there okay and you'll get a get a copy
- 9:09of the IEP you have your parent rights
- 9:12and you have copies of all the reports
- 9:14well this concludes our meeting at this
- 9:16time but I want you to feel free to
- 9:19contact us at any time if you uh would
- 9:21like to call another meeting otherwise
- 9:24we'll see you about this time next year
- 9:26we really appreciate
- 9:28it we just watched some of the things to
- 9:31do and not to do during an IEP meeting
- 9:34the elements of good communication sound
- 9:36information and most importantly
- 9:38preparation should be present above all
- 9:41teamwork is the key to the Student
- 9:43Success and ours as well
